2. Respecting Students: Abusive Classroom Teacher Verbal Behaviour

Abstract

This qualitative study examined classroom Teachers verbal abuse by reviewing a sample of the decisions of the discipline committee of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). Data were collected from the Canadian Legal Information Institute (CANLII) online database, which provided a record of all the OCT discipline committee decisions, with supplementary data from "Professionally Speaking," the magazine of the OCT, as well as the OCT's website. Data revealed that verbal abuse is present in Ontario classrooms, and measured responses and related methods of dealing with teacher misconduct are derisory at best and slowly evolving. Investigated cases of verbal abuse in the classroom were reviewed and illuminated the progress that has been made in dealing with Teacher verbal abuse in schools, while providing suggestions for improvement. Male Teachers are often offenders and the impact on all stakeholders is both lifechanging and serious. In sum, any delay in effectively dealing with complaints and disciplinary matters is unacceptable as it stands and must be fixed to protect students from abuse.

5. Unveiling the significance of adduct formation between thiocarbonyl Lewis donors and diiodine for the structural organization of rhodanine-based small molecule semiconductors.

Abstract

Rhodanine vinyl bithiophene (BTR) was synthesized and characterized both spectroscopically and structurally. The reaction of BTR with molecular iodine led to the 1 : 1 "spoke" adduct BTR·I2, formed by interaction of the rhodanine thiocarbonyl group with a diiodine (I2) molecule. The elongation of the I–I bond in the adduct with respect to solid-state I2 and the Raman response in the low-energy region (ν = 150 cm−1) clearly indicate BTR·I2 to be a weak CT adduct. Hybrid-DFT calculations showed that the adduct formation narrowed the HOMO–LUMO gap in BTR·I2 as compared to BTR, while the extended network of secondary interactions, including type-I halogen bonds (XB), results in the formation of an extended 3D network. As a consequence, the room temperature conductivity of BTR·I2 increased with respect to BTR, testifying for a more efficient molecular packing for charge percolation, with the formation of charge carriers in the crystal being facilitated by the presence of I2. It is worth noting that the single-crystal junction device operates at room temperature, in air, and no variation of conductivity over time was observed, indicating that no loss of diiodine occurred during measurements. These results clearly indicate the formation of thiocarbonyl–diiodine CT adducts and their potential as a solid additive for modulating the organization of small molecule semiconductors. 10. Emergent, Self-Directed, and Self-Organized Learning: Literacy, Numeracy, and the iPod Touch

Abstract

This paper uses narrative and storying to retell how two girls ages 5 and 7 continue to make use of an iPod touch to expand their literacy and numeracy. The paper explores the stopwatch and alarm features within the clock application, as well as the weather application, and the Internet browsing capability of the iPod touch. It also explores some of the challenges and inequities inherent in using this type of technology. The paper concludes with the author's belief that it is important to allow learners freedom to explore and freely play with the technology and that emergent, self-directed, and self-organized learning is a natural and gentle approach to lifelong learning. He hopes that these stories will help others appreciate the fact that technology can enhance the learning of literacy and numeracy in very natural and powerful ways. (Contains 5 figures.)

21. Speech Generating Technology to Support Request Responses of Persons with Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities

Abstract

Objective: This study assessed a new Speech Generating Device (SGD) for supporting request responses in five participants with intellectual and multiple disabilities. Methods: The technology involved a smartphone, a series of mini objects or of cardboard chips with pictures, and special software. When the participants placed one of the mini objects or chips with pictures (that they carried at their waist) against the smartphone (that they had at their chest), the smartphone emitted a verbal request concerning the activity indicated by the mini object or chip. The study was carried out according to a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants using sessions of 20 min. Results: During the baseline, the participants' mean frequencies of requests were zero or close to zero. Following the 11-15 intervention sessions, all participants were successful in making requests (i.e. their mean request frequencies were between about five and 12 per session). Three participants showed clear preferences (i.e. more requests) for some of the activities. The other two participants were rather varied in their requests within and across sessions. Conclusions: The new SGD seems very useful for people with multiple disabilities who are blind or have poor control of their fine motor responses.

49. The Case against Standardized Testing and the Call for a Revitalization of Democracy

Abstract

This essay is the author's battle cry for help in revitalizing democracy. It deals with the institutions in which the future citizens are being educated. It deals with the undemocratic way in which schools are run. Given the time and space, the author would like to narrow the focus of his battle even further and argue for a revitalization of democracy by making a case against standardized testing, specifically, the Ontario Grade 10 Literacy Test. Throughout this paper, among the sources to which the author is going to appeal are: (1) Linda McNeil's book Contradictions of School Reform: Educational Costs of Standardized Testing; (2) a case study he conducted in an Ontario school and the impact that standardized testing has had on the curriculum, students, and teachers at the school; (3) EQAO documents; and (4) Peel District School Board documents.
