Abstract

With the advent of next-generation AR/VR headsets, many of them with affordable prices, telecom operators have forecasted an explosive growth of traffic in their networks. Penetration of AR/VR services and applications is estimated to grow exponentially in the next few years. This work attempts to shed light on the bandwidth capacity requirements and latency of popular AR/VR applications with four different real experimental settings on the Meta Quest 3 headsets, and their potential impact on the network.

Abstract

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have recently attracted considerable attention, with appealing properties for terahertz (THz) technology. This includes the demonstration of large thermal bolometric effects in GQDs when illuminated by THz radiation. However, the interaction of THz photons with GQDs in the Coulomb blockade regime - single electron transport regime - remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the ultrasensitive photoresponse to THz radiation (from <0.1 to 10 THz) of a hBN-encapsulated GQD in the Coulomb blockade regime at low temperature (170 mK). We show that THz radiation of $\sim$10 pW provides a photocurrent response in the nanoampere range, resulting from a renormalization of the chemical potential of the GQD of $\sim$0.15 meV. We attribute this photoresponse to an interfacial photogating effect. Furthermore, our analysis reveals the absence of thermal effects, opening new directions in the study of coherent quantum effects at THz frequencies in GQDs.

Abstract

We report the direct observation of polarization resolved electronic Raman scattering in a gated monolayer graphene device. The evolution of the electronic Raman scattering spectra with gate voltage and its polarization dependence are in full agreement with theoretical expectations for non-resonant Raman processes involving interband electron-hole excitations across the Dirac cone. We further show that the spectral dependence of the electronic Raman scattering signal can be simply described by the dynamical polarizability of graphene in the long wavelength limit. The possibility to directly observe Dirac fermion excitations in graphene opens the way to promising Raman investigations of electronic properties of graphene and other 2D crystals., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures + Supplementary informations

Abstract

The generation of stable trains of ultra-short (fs–ps), terahertz (THz)-frequency radiation pulses, with large instantaneous intensities, is an underpinning requirement for the investigation of light-matter interactions, for metrology and for ultra-high-speed communications. In solid-state electrically-pumped lasers, the primary route for generating short pulses is through passive mode-locking. However, this has not yet been achieved in the THz range, defining one of the longest standing goals over the last two decades. In fact, the realization of passive mode-locking has long been assumed to be inherently hindered by the fast recovery times associated with the intersubband gain of THz lasers. Here, we demonstrate a self-starting miniaturized short pulse THz laser, exploiting an original device architecture that includes the surface patterning of multilayer-graphene saturable absorbers distributed along the entire cavity of a double metal semiconductor 2.30–3.55 THz wire laser. Self-starting pulsed emission with 4.0-ps long pulses in a compact, all-electronic, all-passive and inexpensive configuration is demonstrated.

Abstract

Germanium quantum dots are very interesting for applications such as solar cells, photodetectors, and light emitters because their small bandgap can be tuned over a wide energy range by changing the particle size. One obstacle to applications is the presence of defects, both in the interior and at the surface of the nanoparticles. The defects function as nonradiative recombination centers or trap charge carriers, which will hinder further optical performance. Introducing hydrogen, as employed in a-Si:H solar cells, has proven to be a good method to counter such detrimental defect effects. In this work, germanium quantum dots were fabricated by an ultraclean, vacuum-based nanoparticle reactor in which hydrogen was supplied during growth. Optical spectroscopy of the a-Ge:H quantum dots, together with Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealed a direct bandgap and that the presence of hydrogen resulted in amorphous Ge:H quantum dots. These a-Ge:H quantum dots are a step forward toward reducing charge carrier recombination in quantum dot solar cells.

Abstract

The transport of a charged adsorbate biomolecule in a porous polymeric adsorbent medium and its adsorption onto the covalently immobilized ligands have been modeled and investigated using molecular dynamics modeling and simulations as the third part of a novel fundamental methodology developed for studying ion-exchange chromatography based bioseparations. To overcome computational challenges, a novel simulation approach is devised where appropriate atomistic and coarse grain models are employed simultaneously and the transport of the adsorbate is characterized through a number of locations representative of the progress of the transport process. The adsorbate biomolecule for the system studied in this work changes shape, orientation, and lateral position in order to proceed toward the site where adsorption occurs and exhibits decreased mass transport coefficients as it approaches closer to the immobilized ligand. Furthermore, because the ligands are surrounded by counterions carrying the same type of charge as the adsorbate biomolecule, it takes the biomolecule repeated attempts to approach toward a ligand in order to displace the counterions in the proximity of the ligand and to finally become adsorbed. The formed adsorbate-ligand complex interacts with the counterions and polymeric molecules and is found to evolve slowly and continuously from one-site (monovalent) interaction to multisite (multivalent) interactions. Such a transition of the nature of adsorption reduces the overall adsorption capacity of the ligands in the adsorbent medium and results in a type of surface exclusion effect. Also, the adsorption of the biomolecule also presents certain volume exclusion effects by not only directly reducing the pore volume and the availability of the ligands in the adjacent regions, but also causing the polymeric molecules to change to more compact structures that could further shield certain ligands from being accessible to subsequent adsorbate molecules. These findings have significant practical implications to the design and construction of polymeric porous adsorbent media for effective bioseparations and to the synthesis and operation of processes employed in the separation of biomolecules. The modeling and analysis methods presented in this work could also be suitable for the study of biocatalysis where an enzyme is immobilized on the surface of the pores of a porous medium. Abstract

AIM The aim of this study was to determinate how orthognatic surgery aids to cure many skull and face abnormalities and to help re-establishing the correct occlusive relation thanks to the repositioning of the maxillo-mandibular skeleton basis. METHODS The study included 183 male patients and 338 female patients, with an average age of 23 years. The sample series was divided according to specific pathologies. All patients underwent surgical procedures and the therapeutic strategy was determined based on the anomalies presented. RESULTS 113 patients had a II class dental skeletal occlusion, 180 patients had a III class dental-skeletal occlusion and 222 patients had skull-facial abnormalities. 5 patients underwent only a genioplasty, 82 patients underwent a genioplasty associated with BSSO, 175 patients underwent a genioplasty associated with Le Fort I osteotomy and the remaining 253 patients underwent a genioplasty associated with BSSO and Le Fort I osteotomy. CONCLUSION The experience shows that genioplasty has been successfully introduced in orthognathic surgical therapeutic procedures, for dental-skeleton abnormalities and mandibular asymmetries treatment. In recent years, the evolution of computer systems has allowed an accurate assessment and programming, by means of the three-dimensional display, which are of great help in the course of diagnosis and evaluation of the displacements to be carried out, in order to obtain optimal aesthetic results.

The molecular dynamics simulations are used to demonstrate the generation of rational surface designs from the nonflat porous polymer adsorbent media. The nonflat surface is shown to require a very small increase in the number of solvent molecules for the generation of large pores.

Abstract

L’opera rappresenta un indispensabile complemento del volume omonimo e raccoglie una serie di importanti materiali del cammino di giustizia riparativa svolto da alcuni fra vittime e responsabili della lotta armata del periodo noto come “anni di piombo”, insieme ad altre persone della comunità e della cosiddetta società civile. In questo volume sono pubblicate le biografie dei partecipanti, una scheda di presentazione dell’esperienza di giustizia riparativa svolta nell’arco di quasi dieci anni, alcune lettere che i partecipanti si sono scambiati durante il percorso, una testimonianza dei “garanti” dell’itinerario. Accanto ai materiali, documenti e testimonianze, alcuni saggi completano il testo con esplorazioni accurate nelle fonti del diritto e della storia italiana recente, quelli giuridici; nelle fonti dell’esegesi e degli approcci linguistici, testuali e narrativi, quelli biblici. L’opera è disponibile esclusivamente in formato elettronico ed è abbinata al volume principale “Il libro dell’incontro.
