9. Plasma-treated collagen functionalized with chondroitin sulfate as bioactive and nanostructured extracellular matrix mimics.

Abstract

Aim: Cell microenvironment contains a plethora of information that influences cell modulation. Indeed, the extracellular matrix plays a central role in tissue development. Reproducing the cell–extracellular matrix crosstalk able to recapitulate both physical and biochemical signals is crucial to obtain functional tissue models or regenerative strategies. Materials & methods: Here, a combined method is proposed to easily functionalize collagen surface films, tailoring morphological properties. Oxygen nonthermal plasma treatment and glyco-conjugation with chondroitin sulfate are used to modify surface properties. Results: It results in higher adhesion, proliferation and morphological organization of U87 glioblastoma cells. Conclusion: Our finding suggests new promising strategies for the development of collagen-based biomaterials, which can be employed for advanced in vitro models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Plasma actuators have been proposed as a tool to produce hydrodynamical effects in the boundary layer of aerodynamical flows. We have analyzed some properties of these systems using suitable plasma diagnostics based on the emissivity characteristics of such plasmas. The direction and the velocity of propagation of the ionizing wave spreading on the dielectric surface were measured (in the 100–200 km/s range), and it was demonstrated that it behaves like a cathode-directed streamer. The averaged electron temperature (4–5 eV) and the reduced field strength (E/N ≈ 6 × 1019 V·m2) of the ionizing wave switching the discharges on were measured, too. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sea vessels and artificial sea‐based structures are severely affected by biofouling, i.e., the formation of deposits of living and dead marine organisms that belong to different species and range in size from unicellular bacteria to multicellular seaweed and mussels. This is a significant engineering problem since they essentially alter the geometry of the hull, increasing friction and reducing the speed of vessels, thus increasing the cost and environmental footprint of transportation. Given the scale of global transportation reaches several billion tons per year, the socioeconomic consequences of the reduction in transit speed and increased consumption of fuel continue to drive researchers and engineers to develop strategies to combat the processes of marine biofouling. Many types of antifouling paints, coatings, and materials that have been designed and tested, and in some instances used commercially, suffer from shortcomings ranging from environmental toxicity to limited efficiency and durability. In this review article, a brief overview of the traditional antifouling materials is presented and recent achievements in the design of advanced antifouling materials based on such nanomaterials as graphene, nanotubes, nanoparticles, and more complex nanostructures are discussed. 20. Studies of DC biasing of internal ring on plasma rotation and transport in a toroidal geometry

Abstract

We report results from experiments performed to study how a DC bias with respect to the plasma potential is affecting the plasma states in the toroidal geometry of the Blaamann device in Tromso. In the experiments discussed here, a ring with smaller diameter than the limiter was centered inside the bulk of the plasma and its bias varied with respect to the plasma potential. In the electron saturation current regime of the ring, a significant reduction of the fluctuation levels was observed, and a shear in the poloidal velocity occurred at the low-field side of the ring. This shear was positioned at the same radial position as the maximum of the radial transport when the ring was left floating or biased in the ion saturation current regime. For the latter ring biases, the poloidal velocities had no shear on the low-field side of the ring. Without the velocity shear, the radial transport was similar to previous experiments without ring. With the velocity shear, the radial transport was destroyed. This plasma state, with very low radial transport and fluctuation levels as well as plasma densities around 1017 m-3, is believed to provide a suitable plasma for wave propagation studies in a magnetized plasma with curved magnetic field lines without end effects., Comment: 12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France)

Abstract

An experimental study of the plasma gas phase in low pressure radiofrequency discharges of oxygen is presented. The plasma phase has been studied by means of mass spectroscopy of the neutral and of the charged species, directly sampling the plasma gas phase. We also measured the ion energy distributions. We have studied the influence of the operating conditions on the plasma gas-phase composition. Ion density and energy have been measured as a function of discharge parameters. In particular, we have identified operating conditions in low pressure discharges allowing the extraction of ions from the plasma state with energies exceeding 50 eV. This makes plasma processing with energetic oxygen ions feasible in our device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As famed quantum physicist W. Pauli once said, "The surface was invented by the devil". The nonequilibrium state of particles forming the surface, and the presence of dangling bonds transform the surfaces into a 2D reactor with high physical and chemical reactivity. When two such active surfaces are matched, their interface becomes even more reactive, giving rise to novel properties or enhanced performance. For this reason, much effort is applied to design nanoengineered interfacial systems for applications spanning all facets of human life. This review article discusses recent, mostly within two years, progress in the design of complex, sophisticated carbon‐based interfacial material systems for energy and photonics applications, with the aim to emphasize some of the most interesting and important examples of such systems. Differences in the processes that take place on flat and 3D (curved) surfaces are discussed, with the view of guiding the design and construction of complex functional interfaces, focusing on several points that are of particular importance to the ongoing development of advanced interfacial material systems.
