Eye movement detection algorithms (e.g., I-VT) require the selection of thresholds to identify eye fixations and saccadic movements from gaze data. The choice of threshold is important, as thresholds too low or large may fail to accurately identify eye fixations and saccades. An inaccurate threshold might also affect the resulting visual scan path, the time-ordered sequence of eye fixations and saccades, carried out by the participant. Commonly used approaches to evaluate threshold accuracy can be manually laborious, or require information about the expected visual scan paths of participants, which might not be available. To address this issue, we propose two different computational approaches, labeled as “between-participants comparisons” and “within-participants comparisons.” The approaches were evaluated using the open-source Gazebase dataset, which contained a bullseye-target tracking task, where participants were instructed to follow the movements of a bullseye-target. The predetermined path of the bullseye-target enabled us to evaluate our proposed approaches against the expected visual scan path. The approaches identified threshold values (220°/s and 210°/s) that were 83% similar to the expected visual scan path, outperforming a 30°/s benchmark threshold (41.5%). These methods might assist researchers in identifying accurate threshold values for the I-VT algorithm or potentially other eye movement detection algorithms.

Analyzing visual scan paths, the time-ordered sequence of eye fixations and saccades, can help us understand how operators visually search the environment before making a decision. To analyze and compare visual scan paths, prior studies have used metrics such as string edit similarity, which considers the order used to inspect areas of interest (AOIs), as well as metrics that consider the AOIs shared between visual scan paths. However, to identify similar visual scan paths, particularly in tasks and environments in which operators may apply variations of a common underlying visual scanning behavior, using solely one similarity metric might not be sufficient. In this study, we introduce a classification framework using a combination of the string edit algorithm and the Jaccard coefficient similarity. We applied our framework to the visual scan paths of nine tower controllers in a high-fidelity simulator when a “clear-to-take-off” clearance was issued. The classification framework was able to provide richer and more meaningful classifications of the visual scan paths compared to the results when using either the string edit algorithm or Jaccard coefficient similarity.

Abstract Background Fetoscopic laser coagulation of placental anastomoses reverses the pathological process in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, thereby increasing survival, but there are a paucity of studies addressing long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of survivors. This study aimed to ascertain the presence of neurodevelopmental disabilities in child survivors of monochorionic pregnancies managed by placental laser photocoagulation in the Australian state of Victoria. Methods All pregnancies undergoing placental laser photocoagulation with the Victorian Fetal Therapy Service between 2006–2017 were included. Information on each surviving child, including demographics, perinatal course, and developmental progress was collected from parents, and consent was sought to complete the Child Behaviour Checklist. Interviewers evaluated whether this information was consistent with a diagnosis of any of 14 neurodevelopmental conditions. A three-tiered outcome measure was allocated for each child: (1) unimpaired or developmentally normal, (2) mild or moderate neurological impairment, or (3) severe neurological impairment. Clinical predictors for adverse outcome were identified. Results Of 116 pregnancies (113 twin, 3 triplet), 96 (83%) resulted in 1 + surviving fetuses. 57/113 (50%) twin pregnancies resulted in 2 survivors, 36 (32%) in 1 survivor, and 20 (18%) in no survivors. Of the 235 fetuses, 154 (65.5%) survived to follow-up. Survival increased from 59% in 2006–2008 to 73% in 2015–2017. 90/154 (58%) survivors were followed up at a mean age of 7.5 [SD 3.0] years. Based on parental interview and Child Behaviour Checklist data, 28/90 (31%) participants were assessed as having neurodevelopmental impairment, 27 of mild-moderate severity and 1 severe. Speech/language disorders, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorders, and fine motor impairment were most common. Neonatal length of stay conferred the highest risk of impairment. Conclusion Substantial variation exists between fetal therapy services in the type and length of neonatal follow-up following fetoscopic laser coagulation, contributing to a lack of data on long-term outcomes. The findings from this study support increasingly urgent calls to undertake systematic and sustained follow-up of fetoscopic laser coagulation survivors until school age. Information from this study may assist parents in their decision-making when offered fetal surgery. Importantly, it highlights a group for targeted surveillance and early intervention.

Background: As the COVID-19 pandemic persists, infections continue to surge globally. Presently, the most effective strategies to curb the disease and prevent outbreaks involve fostering immunity, promptly identifying positive cases, and ensuring their timely isolation. Notably, there are instances where the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains infectious even after patients have completed their quarantine. Objective: Understanding viral persistence post-quarantine is crucial as it could account for localized infection outbreaks. Therefore, studying and documenting such instances is vital for shaping future public health policies. Design: This study delves into a unique case of SARS-CoV-2 persistence in a 60-year-old female healthcare worker with a medical history of hypertension and hypothyroidism. The research spans 55 days, marking the duration between her initial and subsequent diagnosis during Chile's first COVID-19 wave, with the analysis conducted using RT-qPCR. Results: Genomic sequencing-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that the SARS-CoV-2 detected in both Nasopharyngeal swab samples (NPSs) was consistent with the 20B clade of the Nextstrain classification, even after a 55-day interval. Conclusion: This research underscores the need for heightened vigilance concerning cases of viral persistence. Such instances, albeit rare, might be pivotal in understanding sporadic infection outbreaks that occur post-quarantine.

Extensive use of antibiotics has been the primary treatment for the Salmonid Rickettsial Septicemia, a salmonid disease caused by the bacterium Piscirickettsia salmonis. Occurrence of antibiotic resistance has been explored in various P. salmonis isolates using different assays; however, P. salmonis is a nutritionally demanding intracellular facultative pathogen; thus, assessing its antibiotic susceptibility with standardized and validated protocols is essential. In this work, we studied the pathogen response to antibiotics using a genomic, a transcriptomic, and a phenotypic approach. A new defined medium (CMMAB) was developed based on a metabolic model of P. salmonis. CMMAB was formulated to increase bacterial growth in nutrient-limited conditions and to be suitable for performing antibiotic susceptibility tests. Antibiotic resistance was evaluated based on a comprehensive search of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from P. salmonis genomes. Minimum inhibitory concentration assays were conducted to test the pathogen susceptibility to antibiotics from drug categories with predicted ARGs. In all tested P. salmonis strains, resistance to erythromycin, ampicillin, penicillin G, streptomycin, spectinomycin, polymyxin B, ceftazidime, and trimethoprim was medium-dependent, showing resistance to higher antibiotic concentrations in the CMMAB medium. The mechanism for antibiotic resistance to ampicillin in the defined medium was further explored and was proven to be associated to a decrease in the bacterial central metabolism, including the TCA cycle, the pentose-phosphate pathway, energy production, and nucleotide metabolism, and it was not associated with decreased growth rate of the bacterium or with the expression of any predicted ARG. Our results suggest that nutrient scarcity plays a role in the bacterial antibiotic resistance, protecting against the detrimental effects of antibiotics, and thus, we propose that P. salmonis exhibits a metabolic resistance to ampicillin when growing in a nutrient-limited medium.

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most cultivated and economically important species in world aquaculture. Intensive production promotes the use of monosex animals, due to an important dimorphism that favors male growth. Currently, the main mechanism to obtain all-male populations is the use of hormones in feeding during larval and fry phases. Identifying genomic regions associated with sex determination in Nile tilapia is a research topic of great interest. The objective of this study was to identify genomic variants associated with sex determination in three commercial populations of Nile tilapia. Whole-genome sequencing of 326 individuals was performed, and a total of 2.4 million high-quality bi-allelic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified after quality control. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted to identify markers associated with the binary sex trait (males = 1; females = 0). A mixed logistic regression GWAS model was fitted and a genome-wide significant signal comprising 36 SNPs, spanning a genomic region of 536 kb in chromosome 23 was identified. Ten out of these 36 genetic variants intercept the anti-Müllerian (Amh) hormone gene. Other significant SNPs were located in the neighboring Amh gene region. This gene has been strongly associated with sex determination in several vertebrate species, playing an essential role in the differentiation of male and female reproductive tissue in early stages of development. This finding provides useful information to better understand the genetic mechanisms underlying sex determination in Nile tilapia.

El único hallazgo de interés en la historia clínica era una infección por VIH a tratamiento antirretroviral. El electrocardiograma reveló la presencia de un segmento ST elevado en las derivaciones II, III y aVF y un patrón QS en las derivaciones de V1 a V4 sugestivo de necrosis anterior establecida. La coronariografía realizada 1 hora antes de cursar síntomas confirmó la presencia de una oclusión trombótica aguda total de la circunfleja izquierda (flecha blanca, figura 1A) y nebulosidad angiográfica en el segmento medio de la descendente anterior (flecha negra, figura 1B). La cirfunfleja se trató mediante trombectomía y angioplastia con implante de stent farmacoactivo. La tomografía de coherencia óptica realizada en la descendente anterior reveló la presencia de una estructura en panal de abeja con múltiples conductos intraluminales (figura 1C, vídeo 1 del material adicional). This is the case of a 27-year-old male patient admitted to our hospital with acute oppressive chest pain. Clinical history was only remarkable for HIV infection under treatment with antiretroviral therapy. The electrocardiogram revealed the ST-segment elevation in leads II, III, aVF, and a QS-pattern in leads V1 to V4 suggestive of established anterior necrosis. Coronary angiography was performed 1 hour after symptom onset revealing a total acute thrombotic occlusion of the left circumflex artery (white arrow, figure 1A), and angiographic haziness in the mid left anterior descending coronary artery (black arrow, figure 1B). The circumflex artery was treated with thrombectomy and angioplasty with drug-eluting stent implantation. The optical coherence tomography performed on the left anterior descending coronary artery revealed a honeycomb-like structure with multiple intraluminal channels. The MRI confirmed the presence of moderate left ventricular systolic dysfunction (left ventricular ejection fraction = 45%), established anterior, anteroseptal, apical, and inferoseptal transmural necrosis without myocardial viability, and apical thrombi. Abstract Background Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a serious complication of 10–15% of twin or triplet pregnancies in which multiple fetuses share a single placenta. Communicating placental vessels allow one fetus (the donor) to pump blood to the other (the recipient). Mortality rates without intervention are high, approaching 100% in some series, with fetal deaths usually due to cardiac failure. Surgical correction using laser photocoagulation of communicating placental vessels was developed in the 1980s and refined in the 1990s. Since it was introduced in Victoria in 2006, laser surgery has been performed in approximately 120 pregnancies. Survival of one or more fetuses following laser surgery is currently > 90%, however the neurodevelopmental outcomes for survivors remain incompletely understood. Prior to laser therapy, at least one in five survivors of TTTS had serious adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes (usually cerebral palsy). Current estimates of neurological impairment among survivors following laser surgery vary from 4 to 31% and long-term follow-up data are limited. Methods This paper describes the methodology for a retrospective cohort study in which children aged 24 months and over (corrected for prematurity), who were treated with laser placental photocoagulation for TTTS at Monash Health in Victoria, Australia, will undergo comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment by a multidisciplinary team. Evaluation will include parental completion of pre-assessment questionnaires of social and behavioural development, a standardised medical assessment by a developmental paediatrician or paediatric neurologist, and age-appropriate cognitive and academic, speech and fine and gross motor assessments by psychologists, speech and occupational therapists or physiotherapists. Assessments will be undertaken at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute/Royal Children’s Hospital, at Monash Health or at another mutually agreed location. Results will be recorded in a secure online database which will facilitate future related research. Discussion This will be the first study to report and evaluate neurodevelopmental outcomes following laser surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in Victoria, and will inform clinical practice regarding follow-up of children at risk of adverse outcomes.

El artículo estudia el nacimiento y la trayectoria del institucionalismo económico en su etapa formativa. Se analizan sus fundamentos y temas principales junto a sus autores más relevantes. Para comprender la unidad intelectual de un grupo aparentemente heterogéneo, se sostiene que la historia del institucionalismo económico debe ser interpretada bajo el análisis de los contextos de investigación y la figura de un movimiento económico. Se concluye que este último posee rasgos de heterodoxia frente a la corriente principal de la ciencia económica.

The role of the en route air traffic control specialist (ATCS) is vital to maintaining safety and efficiency within the National Airspace System (NAS). ATCSs must vigilantly scan the airspace under their control and adjacent airspaces using an En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) radar display. The intent of this research is to provide an understanding of the expert controller visual search and aircraft conflict mitigation strategies that could be used as scaffolding methods during ATCS training. Interviews and experiments were conducted to elicit visual scanning and conflict mitigation strategies from the retired controllers who were employed as air traffic control instructors. The interview results were characterized and classified using various heuristics. In particular, representative visual scanpaths were identified, which accord with the interview results of the visual search strategies. The highlights of our findings include: (1) participants used systematic search patterns, such as circular, spiral, linear or quadrant-based, to extract operation-relevant information; (2) participants applied an information hierarchy when aircraft information was cognitively processed (altitude -> direction -> speed); (3) altitude or direction changes were generally preferred over speed changes when imminent potential conflicts were mitigated. Potential applications exist in the implementation of the findings into the training curriculum of candidates.

We describe and illustrate three new species of chewing lice in the genus Philopteroides parasitic on passerines (Order Passeriformes, families Acanthizidae, Rhipiduridae and Petroicidae) from New Zealand. They are: Philopteroides pilgrimi sp. n. from Gerygone igata igata; Ph. fuliginosus sp. n. from Rhipidura fuliginosa placabilis and R. f. fuliginosa; and Ph. macrocephalus sp. n. from Petroica macrocephala macrocephala and P. m. dannefaerdi. The identity of Docophorus lineatus Giebel, 1874 is discussed based on its morphology and host association. We also transfer Tyranniphilopterus beckeri to the genus Philopteroides, and provide a key to identify adults of 12 of the 13 species now included in Philopteroides.

Resumen La trayectoria, tan rica y diversa del institucionalismo, es un caso de estudio que interroga al historiador del pensamiento económico y le plantea dilemas poco fáciles de resolver sobre su reconstrucción historiográfica. Desde una perspectiva de contextos de la actividad científica se ha buscado una integración de aspectos externos e internos de la corriente. Esta labor permite identificar los factores ambientales de la corriente y las influencias recibidas en su origen. Se demuestra que el institucionalismo económico en su fase temprana (1899-1939), se constituyó en un movimiento con identidad propia y vinculada a los debates generados en el ámbito de la American Economic Association. Se sostiene que la trayectoria del institucionalismo original, debe ser interpretada bajo la figura de un movimiento económico. Se concluye que este último posee rasgos de disidencia frente a la corriente principal de la ciencia económica.
