Urnfields were the common type of cemetery in the Late Bronze Age (LBA) and Early Iron Age (EIA) in much of Northwest Europe. Rarely are there clear social or chronological differences between burials apart from changing pottery types. The cemetery of Destelbergen stands out because of the relatively high prevalence of monumental ditches surrounding a selection of graves, indicating a certain status difference between the deceased. Strontium concentrations ([Sr]) combined with radiocarbon (14C) dates and spatial analysis bring to light clear differences between LBA and EIA traditions. The end of the LBA went hand in hand with the abandonment of the oldest part of the cemetery, which new 14C dates demonstrate was strict. Additionally, [Sr] reveal changing diets in individuals buried centrally within monumental ditches. In the EIA these individuals present significantly lower [Sr] than the surrounding burials, potentially the result of a diet richer in animal protein at the expense of plantbased food, a distinction not seen in LBA burials. Even though continuity and equality are reflected in the uniform burial tradition seen within urnfields, this paper’s analyses unlock subtle changes in social attitudes between the LBA and EIA and suggest increasing (dietary) social differentiation in the EIA.

Dit beknopte rapport werpt een blik op het potentieel aan kenniswinst en de meerwaarde voor de archeologische inventarisatie. Het kennispotentieel is duidelijk zichtbaar bij de beperkte analyses van de vondsten uit de Romeinse periode in het eerste onderzoeksjaar en de vroegmiddeleeuwse vondsten voor de periode april 2019- mei 2020. Voor een goed begrip van de waarde van amateurmetaaldetectie voor de archeologische kennis in Vlaanderen is een volwaardige analyse van het bestand aan gemelde vondsten een must. Het agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed hoopt dit bestand, indien mogelijk in samenwerking met partners, dan ook de volgende jaren verder te verwerken, te analyseren en om te zetten in kenniswinst en relevante informatie voor het archeologisch onderzoek, beheer en beleid

De Vlaamse Regering vraagt aan het agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed elk jaar een rapport waarin wat betreft archeologie o.a. volgende elementen aan bod komen: • een overzicht van het aantal vooronderzoeken en opgravingen alsook de duur ervan, • een overzicht van de resultaten van deze onderzoeken, • een overzicht van de voorgestelde en goedgekeurde maatregelen uit de archeologienota’s, • de financiële implicaties van het archeologisch onderzoek en de werking van het archeologisch solidariteitsfonds. Dit rapport biedt een antwoord op de tweede vraag1 en wordt als apart onderzoeksrapport aangeboden op de open archives repository (OAR) van het agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed. De andere vragen worden beantwoord in het rapport ‘Evaluatie archeologie 2021. Uitvoering archeologieregelgeving. In wat volgt, worden de resultaten samengevat van de archeologische projecten die onder de regelgeving van het Onroerenderfgoeddecreet vielen, en waarvoor tussen 1 januari en 31 december 2021 eindverslagen en nota’s met eindafwerking in het archeologieportaal3 opgeladen zijn. Sinds dit jaar worden hieraan ook de eindverslagen van het syntheseonderzoek4 toegevoegd.

De vondst van deze urnen met crematieresten is het gevolg van een bijzondere samenloop van omstandigheden. Na duizenden jaren quasi onverstoord daar begraven te zijn, werden de urnen via de kluiten van een omgevallen boom uit de heuvel getrokken, wellicht kort voor de ontdekking van het grafheuvelcomplex en de bescherming ervan als archeologische site. Een rondleiding in het kader van deze bescherming was de aanleiding van de toevallige vondst. Dit toont aan dat dergelijke belangrijke en kwetsbare archeologische site nood hebben aan actief beheer en bescherming.

Cremation is a complex mortuary practice, involving a number of activities of the living towards the dead before, during, and after the destruction of the bodily soft tissues by fire. The limiting information concerning these behavioral patterns obtained from the pyre remains and/or cremation deposits prevents the reconstruction of the handling of the corpse during the burning process. This pioneering study tries to determine the initial positioning of the corpse in the pyre and assess whether the deceased was wearing closed leather shoes during cremation through isotopic (δ13C, δ18O) and infrared (ATR-FTIR) analyses of experimentally burnt pig remains, used as a proxy for humans. The results obtained show that both the position of feet on or within the pyre and the presence of footwears may moderately-to-highly influence the oxygen isotope ratios of bone apatite carbonates and the cyanamide content of calcined bone in certain situations. By forming a protective layer, shoes appear to temporarily delay the burning of the underlying pig tissues and to increase the heat-shielding effect of the soft tissues protecting the bone mineral fraction. In such case, bioapatite bone carbonates exchange oxygen with a relatively more 18O-depleted atmosphere (due to the influence of lignin-derived oxygen rather than cellulose-derived oxygen), resulting in more pronounced decrease in the δ18Ocarb values during burning of the shoed feet vs. unshoed feet. The shift observed here was as high as 2.5. A concomitant isotopic effect of the initial location of the feet in the pyres was also observed, resulting in a top-to-bottom decrease difference in the δ18Ocarb values of shoed feet of about 1.4 between each deposition level tested. Finally, the presence of cyanamide (CN/P 0.02) seems to be indicative of closed footwear since the latter creates favorable conditions for its incorporation into bone apatite., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The funerary Bronze Age culture in the Belgian part of the Meuse valley is poorly understood due to the challenging nature of cremation deposits that dominate the archaeological record. Only a few sites were analysed in that region, limiting the possibilities to reconstruct the development of Bronze Age populations in Belgium. Due to its good preservation and detailed excavation reports, the site of Herstal (Belgium) offers a unique opportunity to finally gain new insights into the life and death of those buried in the Meuse Valley during the Late Bronze Age. A total of 21 graves were analysed using a multi-proxy approach, combining grave typology, osteoarchaeology, strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr), and radiocarbon dating. The 87Sr/86Sr results show that the individuals of Herstal most likely used a variety of local food supplies while having interactions with other populations in and beyond the Meuse Valley, as demonstrated by the bronze artefacts and ceramics displaying clear influences from Germany, Southern Netherlands, and North-West France. Dit rapport biedt een antwoord op de tweede vraag.

This study aims to better understand the development of group identity, mobility, and health in the Early Medieval Meuse Valley. This is achieved by combining existing demographic and palaeopathological information from 73 cremation deposits from Echt, the Netherlands, with new strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) and strontium concentrations ([Sr]) that are performed on pars petrosa, diaphysis, and rib fragments. Although the surrounding Early Medieval cemeteries practiced inhumation, the initial burial community of Echt persisted in expressing the divergent burial ritual of cremation. Thirty-two radiocarbon dates demonstrate the fifth- to sixth-century cremation deposits to be chronologically separated from the seventh-century inhumations that were preserved in situ, suggesting a subsequent burial community replaced cremation with inhumation in the seventh century. Nutritionally inadequate diets may have contributed to the relatively high prevalence of porotic hyperostosis (~ 34%), resulting from decreasing foods supplies caused by deteriorating climatic conditions. The inhabitants are postulated to have mainly consumed foods originating from the land directly surrounding their farmsteads, expressed by the great variability in the 87Sr/86Sr of the diaphyses and ribs (0.7096 to 0.7131), matching the geological complexity of the area. The lack of significant differences between the 87Sr/86Sr and [Sr] of ribs and diaphyses connotes little change in the geological origin of the foods occurred over time, stressing the importance of the yield of local harvests. In contrast, large differences in childhood (i.e. pars petrosa) vs. adult (i.e. ribs and diaphyses) 87Sr/86Sr suggest the regional movement of individuals to possibly support inter-farmstead relationships (e.g. via marriages)., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Objectives: This study aims to increase the rate of correctly sexed calcined individuals from archaeological and forensic contexts. This is achieved by evaluating sexual dimorphism of commonly used and new skeletal elements via uni- and multi-variate metric trait analyses. Materials and methods: Twenty-two skeletal traits were evaluated in 86 individuals from the William M. Bass donated cremated collection of known sex and age-at-death. Four different predictive models, logistic regression, random forest, neural network, and calculation of population specific cut-off points, were used to determine the classification accuracy (CA) of each feature and several combinations thereof. Results: An overall CA of ≥ 80% was obtained for 12 out of 22 features (humerus trochlea max. and lunate length, humerus head vertical diameter, humerus head transverse diameter, radius head max. femur head vertical diameter, patella width, patella thickness, and talus trochlea length) using univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed an increase of CA (≥ 95%) for certain combinations and models (e.g. humerus trochlea max. and patella thickness). Our study shows metric sexual dimorphism to be well preserved in calcined human remains, despite the changes that occur during burning. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated the potential of machine learning approaches, such as neural networks, for multivariate analyses. In dit hoofdstuk van de onderzoeksbalans wordt de periode van de vroege en de volle middeleeuwen behandeld. Eerst is er een kort hoofdstuk waarbij het onderzoeksdomein omschreven wordt en een bondig overzicht wordt gegeven van de publicaties die op deze periode betrekking hebben. Daarna volgt een uitgebreider hoofdstuk dat een overzicht geeft van het onderzoek in Vlaanderen, opgesplitst in drie delen. Eerst wordt een overzicht gegeven van de aard en de kwaliteit van informatie betreffende deze periode die in de Centraal Archeologische Inventaris (CAI) te vinden is. Het tweede deel betreft een overzicht van het recent en actueel onderzoek in Vlaanderen. Het derde deel gaat uitgebreid in op enkele onderzoeksthema’s onder de titel ‘themata en topics’. Deze overzichten zijn geen statisch gegeven, maar een momentopname van een dynamisch proces. Het is dan ook de bedoeling dat dit hoofdstuk de komende jaren aangevuld wordt met informatie over zowel de bestaande als nieuwe onderzoeksthema’s en dat de lezer hierbij een rapporterende rol vervult

Studies of funerary practices provide information about many aspects of death in past societies. However, only limited archaeological evidence documents the circumstances under which cremations occurred and the person(s) who were performing the funerary rituals. Lying at the border between Atlantic and Continental cultural traditions, the Scheldt and Meuse basins of Belgium represent a unique location to investigate variations in ancient pyre technology and body management, as well as the transfer of knowledge related to cremation techniques during the Metal Ages (ca. 2100-52 BCE). The combined use of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and carbon and oxygen isotope analysis of different skeletal elements from cremation deposits from four archaeological sites clearly shows differences between the Meuse and Scheldt basins. Different wood availability or selection, and variations in the skills and/or experience of the cremation operator may explain these results. These observed differences are likely linked to ways in which cremation was performed in the two basins, indicating that during the Metal Ages, burning processes were not homogeneous in the Belgian region. Instead, cremation practices appear to align with the different cultural influences also observed in ceramics and bronze artifacts from the same time period. These observed differences in funerary practices between the two basins in Belgium show the immense potential of combining infrared and carbon and oxygen isotope analyses to investigate cremation rituals in any period and region around the world.

Le projet CRUMBEL vise à étudier la mobilité ancienne des populations sur le territoire de la Belgique, du Néolithique au début du Moyen Âge. Pour atteindre ces objectifs de recherche, différents sujets seront étudiés. Dans une première phase, les anciennes collections d’os humains incinérés seront répertoriées. Des échantillons provenant des sites funéraires feront ensuite l’objet d’analyses archéométriques des isotopes stables et de datations radiocarbones. The CRUMBEL project aims to investigate the mobility of the former population in Belgium from the Neolithic period until the Early Middle Ages. To reach these research goals different topics will be studied. In a preliminary phase, the ancient collections of cremated bone will be documented. A selection of these funerary sites will be studied to understand the mobility using different archaeometric approaches as stable isotopes and radiocarbon dating to obtain reliable information on earlier mobility in Belgium.

As part of the study of the early medieval cemetery at Broechem (Belgium), human bones from 32 cremation graves have been dated through radiocarbon (14C) analysis. It was noted that many of the dates were not in accordance with the chronological ranges provided by the characteristics of the cultural artifacts deposited in the graves. In fact, the human bones were “older” than the artifacts. Subsequently, a number of animal bones (in all cases from domestic pigs) was radiocarbon dated, yielding dates that were more consistent with the information from the cultural artifacts than the human bones. The dates obtained on human and pig bones from the same grave often differed around 100 radiocarbon years. This paper tries to find an explanation for the pattern observed, concentrating on two hypotheses: aquatic reservoir versus old wood effects. The evaluation takes into account additional radiocarbon dates derived from charcoal fragments of the funeral pyre, from both short-lived and long-lived taxa. A conclusive explanation for the anomalous radiocarbon dates could not be reached but clear suggestions can be put forward for future experimental work that will without doubt shed more light upon the interpretational problems raised.

The adoption of a new funerary ritual with all its social and cognitive meanings is of great importance to understanding social transformations of past societies. The first known occurrence of cremation in the territory corresponding to modern Belgium dates back to the Mesolithic period. From the end of the Neolithic onward, the practice of cremation was characterized by periods in which this rite was predominant and periods of contractions, defined by a decrease in the use of this funerary ritual. This paper aims to quantify such phenomenon for the first time by modeling discontinuities in burial practices through kernel density analysis of 1428 radiocarbon (14C) dates from 311 archaeological sites located in Belgium from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages. Despite possible taphonomic and sampling biases, the results highlight the existence of periods with a large uptake of cremation rite followed by periods of contractions; such discontinuities took place in correlation with changes in the socio-economical structure of local communities, as, for example, during the later Middle Bronze Age and at the end of the Roman Period., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

One of the oldest objects in the archaeological collection from Ghent University is an urn from the region of Tongerlo. The urn belongs to the Late Bronze Age as has been proven by the typochronological study as well as the radiocarbon date on a cremated bone. The osteological study has shown that the remains of two persons a young juvenile and an adult were deposited in the urn. This phenomenon is not unknown in other regional urnfield cemeteries, although until now mostly neonates together with women have been identified.

In de jaren 1999-2002 voerde het voormalige IAP (nu Onroerend Erfgoed) archeologische opgravingen uit in de gemeente Hove. Deze opgravingen brachten een meerperiodensite met overblijfselen uit de ijzertijd, de vroege middeleeuwen en de volle middeleeuwen aan het licht. Deze bijdrage bevat enkel de gedetailleerde studie van de middeleeuwse resten. Daarbij werd duidelijk dat in Hove-Cueteghem de resten gevonden werden van een nederzetting die vanaf de Merovingische periode tot en met de volle middeleeuwen ononderbroken bewoond is geweest. De continuïteit blijkt uit de chronologische sequentie van de absolute dateringsgegevens, de langdurige ingebruikname van sommige waterputten en de samenstelling van het vondstensemble. Na de 12de eeuw is de nederzetting verlaten. Voorheen is de hypothese gesteld dat de nederzetting opgegeven zou zijn na de doortocht van Maarten van Rossum, die omstreeks 1542 de regio teisterde met plunderingen en brandstichtingen. Aangezien op de site echter geen laatmiddeleeuwse resten zijn gevonden, lijkt het gebied al eerder verlaten te zijn geweest. Mogelijk heeft de bewoning zich verder naar het noorden verplaatst.

Close to the village of Pulle (N Belgium), six trenches were opened for archaeological research. This resulted in the discovery of a dense spread of traces of human settlement. Only a relatively small number of artefacts was found, but these allowed attributing the traces to habitation during the Iron Age and Early Middle Ages. In one of the trenches, the level with the archaeological finds was covered by a drift-sand dune. The accumulation of these aeolian sediments presumably put an end to the human occupation. Hence, dating these sediments might provide essential information as to the chronology of the occupational history of the site. Quartz-based optical dating was applied to constrain the timing of sand-drifting at Pulle. All samples showed satisfactory luminescence characteristics and yielded an internally consistent set of optical ages. Within analytical uncertainty, the age results show no increase with depth and do not allow differentiating between distinct phases of sand-drifting. An average age of 1.2 ± 0.1 ka was obtained, which is interpreted as an upper age limit for human occupation at the site. The results also illustrate (the limit on) the time resolution that can be achieved through conventional quartz single-aliquot optical dating techniques; considering these limitations, we conclude that the sand-drifting at Pulle occurred during a single, fairly short event in the Early Middle Ages.

Bij opgravingen op de terreinen van de verkaveling ‘Mussenpad’, niet ver van de kerk van Nijlen, kwamen onder meer twee goed bewaarde eikenhouten vroegmiddeleeuwse waterputten aan het licht. Na de opgravingen werd beslist om op artefacten en ecologisch materiaal uit deze twee waterputten verdere natuurwetenschappelijke analyses en detailstudies uit te voeren. Het doel van dit vervolgonderzoek was het lokale landschap en het landgebruik zo goed als mogelijk te reconstrueren. De verschillende vondstencategorieën geven samen een coherent beeld van de vroegere omgeving. Het archeologisch onderzoek in Nijlen-Mussenpad documenteert bovendien ook vroegmiddeleeuwse metaalverwerking in ruraal gebied. Dit is een voor Vlaanderen weinig beschreven gegeven. Deze artisanale onderneming werd klaarblijkelijk op enige afstand van de behuizing georganiseerd. Het gaat hier over een productie die de plaatselijke noden van een kleine gemeenschap oversteeg en die dus een wijder afzetgebied moet gekend hebben.

Enkele maanden voor de publicatie van de opgravingsresultaten '90-'92 Kontich-Alfsberg verscheen, vernamen we dat het plateau van de Alfsberg zou verkaveld worden. Van belang was dat niet alleen reeds onderzochte percelen, maar ook een aanpalend perceel, in de verkaveling werd opgenomen. In tegenstelling tot de overige aanpalende percelen die sterk afgegraven zijn en bovendien intens bebouwd met tuinhuisjes, garages, volières, bleek dit perceel vrijwel intact bewaard te zijn en niet verstoord door allerhande bouwsels. Door deze samenloop van omstandigheden nam de hoop toe dat de ontbrekende zijde van de indrukwekkende gracht- en walstructuur op het perceel toch nog zou kunnen gelocaliseerd worden. Het noordoostelijke grachtverloop strekte zich immers uit in de richting van het betreffende perceel.

Na een periode van vijf jaar werd de draad van het archeologisch onderzoek te Kontich-Kazerne terug opgenomen. Het voorgaande onderzoek op het Kapelleveld en de Steenakker werd uitgevoerd in de jaren 1964-1972 en 1985-1988 door de Antwerpse Vereniging voor Romeinse Archeologie (A.V.R.A.), in samenwerking met de Nationale Dienst voor Opgravingen (later IAP, nu VIOE) en de gemeente Kontich.

Bij de begeleiding van de ruilverkavelingswerken in Poppel kwamen heel wat nieuwe archeologische gegevens over de Antwerpse Noorderkempen aan het licht. In Weelde, Ravels werd een inheems-Romeins grafveldje aangetroffen op een midden-bronstijdnecropool. De ontdekking van twee genivelleerde midden-bronstijdgrafheuvels in een actueel agrarisch landschap toont onmiskenbaar aan dat ook in de Kempen van deze monumenten nog sporen terug te vinden zijn, ook al zijn ze volledig geëgaliseerd. Dat de monumentale grafheuvels ook in latere perioden een speciale betekenis hadden en de rol van de voorouders hierin wellicht een belangrijke rol speelde, is al langer bekend. Ook voor dit grafveld was dit duidelijk aantoonbaar door de aanleg van een jonger, inheems-Romeins grafveldje op het oude dodenareaal. Toch bleek hier een nog verrassender fenomeen aanwezig. Bij de aanleg van de nieuwe graven heeft men de eeuwenoude bronstijdmonumenten duidelijk volledig afgegraven. Waarschijnlijk probeerde men zo een claim te leggen op het grondgebied van de voorouders of zich te verzekeren van hun krachten.

De site Alfsberg is gelegen in het oosten van de gemeente Kontich, ongeveer 400 m ten zuidwesten van de kerk O.-L.-Vr.-Onbevlekt Ontvangen van de wijk Kontich-Kazerne en ca. 800 m ten zuidwesten van het Kapelleveld en de Steenakker, waar opgravingen werden uitgevoerd door de Antwerpse Vereniging voor Romeinse Archeologie (A.V.R.A.). Een nederzetting uit de late IJzertijd en een Gallo-Romeinse vicus kwamen er aan het licht tijdens de graafcampagnes van 1964-1972 en van 1985-1988, inmiddels in samenwerking met de voormalige Nationale Dienst voor Opgravingen. Op dezelfde afstand naar het zuidwesten toe werden bewoningssporen uit de vroege en midden ijzertijd aangesneden.

Op een afstand gezien bieden de nog resterende gebouwen van de vroegere St-Bernardusabdij een majestueuze indruk. Prachig gelegen aan de grote Scheldebocht straalt de abdij een innerlijke rust uit temidden van de moderne industrie. Van nabij echter blijkt duidelijk hoe de kloostergebouwen na een luisterrijke geschiedenis van acht eeuwen in zeer gehavende toestand de laatste 200 jaar hebben doorstaan. Sinds 1978 verlaten en ten prooi aan de vernielzucht van vandalen, bevinden de gebouwen zich momenteel in een erbarmelijke toestand.

De opgravingen in Edegem-Buizegem hebben alleszins enkele unieke vondsten en inzichten opgeleverd. De enorme grafcirkel uit de vroege ijzertijd is de grootste die ooit in Vlaanderen werd gevonden en is in afmetingen enkel te vergelijken met het vorstengraf van Oss (NL, Noord-Brabant). Ook de laatneolithische grafheuvel met standgreppel en een enkelvoudige palenkrans is de eerste in ons land. Beide structuren geven een beeld van een uitzonderlijk graf van een ongetwijfeld uitzonderlijk persoon in de samenleving, en van de inplanting van het graf in relatie tot de voorouders en het landschap. Ook de opgravingen van een grafveld uit de vroege en volle middeleeuwen is vrij zeldzaam in de regio, hoewel het jammer genoeg slechts voor een klein deel te bestuderen was. Daardoor gaf het weinig inzicht in de datering, de stratigrafie en de relatie tot het kerkgebouw. Afgezien van deze afzonderlijke elementen ligt het belang van de site evenzeer in de uitzonderlijke, bijna onafgebroken occupatiegeschiedenis vanaf het laat neolithicum tot in de late middeleeuwen. De nadruk lag in de opgegraven zone op de funeraire functie van de site, maar de bewoningssporen wijzen ook op een continue nederzettingsfunctie, zeker sinds de late ijzertijd. De zone direct rond de grafheuvels lijkt het centrum te zijn gebleven van alle latere occupatie. De locatie van de site, op het hoogste punt van de omgeving, speelde ongetwijfeld een doorslaggevende rol bij de inplanting van de grafheuvels. De hoog gelegen vruchtbare leemgrond was ook voor de prehistorische en vroegmiddeleeuwse bewoners een aantrekkingspool. In de Romeinse periode echter lijkt de nabijheid van de verbindingsweg tussen de vicus op Kontich-Steenakker en de Mechelse steenweg belangrijker te zijn geweest. De Romeinse bewoningskern is dan ook meer naar het zuiden te situeren.

De site Capelakker te Brecht- Overbroek werd ontdekt in 1998 door infrastructuurwerken in een geplande sociale verkaveling aangevraagd door IGEAN (Intercommunale Grondbeleid en Expansie Antwerpen). Het toenmalige Instituut voor het Archeologisch Patrimonium (IAP) kreeg de gelegenheid heel de te bebouwen oppervlakte van de verkaveling te onderzoeken, nog voor de percelen verkocht werden. Er werd in het totaal een oppervlakte van ongeveer 9000 m² gecontroleerd. Brecht kent van in de prehistorie een lange bewoningsgeschiedenis. Dit werd reeds aangetoond door de vele gekende archeologische vindplaatsen in de omgeving. Specifiek voor de periode van de metaaltijden, en in het bijzonder de ijzertijd, blijken in Brecht vele sites gekend te zijn. Vooral door archeologisch onderzoek de laatste 10 jaar wordt het beeld over de ijzertijd langs Belgische zijde van de Kempen ook duidelijker. Langs het Moordenaarsven, op het Thomas Heyveld (beide op 1300 tot 1000 m ten zuidwesten van de vindplaats) en langs de Melkweg (gelegen op de grens tussen Brecht en Wuustwezel) zijn prehistorische sites aangetroffen. Maar ook op de Hoge Meerrijt en Lage Meerrijt zouden mogelijk prehistorische sites kunnen gelegen zijn.

Gespreid over de jaren 1996 tot 1998 voerde de Vlaamse Landmaatschappij (VLM) het ruilverkavelingsproject Poppel uit. De realisatie van infrastructuurwerken, de herinrichting van kavels, het rendabeler maken van het landbouwareaal door bodemverbeterings- en egalisatiewerken maar ook de integratie van natuurwaarden gaan steeds gepaard met heel wat ondergrondverzet. Reeds tijdens het eerdere ruilverkavelingsproject Ravels was gebleken dat dergelijke werken heel wat risico’s inhielden voor het archeologische bodemarchief. Sindsdien is een constructieve werking ontstaan tussen de VLM en het IAP/VIOE om in toekomstige projecten rekening te houden met gekende en ongekende archeologische waarden binnen de projectgebieden.

Aan de hand van het Digitaal Hoogtemodel Vlaanderen werd in 2016 in het bosgebied ten noorden van de abdij van Postel (Mol) een tot dan toe ongekend en bijzonder goed bewaard grafheuvelcomplex ontdekt (Meylemans et al. 2017). Dit complex werd in 2018 beschermd als archeologische site (https:// id.erfgoed.net/aanduidingsobjecten/113329). Naar aanleiding hiervan organiseerde de erfgoeddienst k.Erf (nu Stuifzand) op 15 februari 2019 een geleide wandeling voor geïnteresseerden op deze site. Op "grafheuvel 5" (fi g. 1) werd door de heer Jo Lommelen (kamer voor heemkunde Mol) tijdens deze wandeling de aanwezigheid van een aantal scherven en crematieresten opgemerkt. Deze waren met de wortelkluit van een omgewaaide boom uit de grafheuvel getrokken, en lagen verspreid bij deze kluit. De vondst werd als toevalsvondst gemeld aan het agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed. In de ochtend van 16 februari 2019 werd een terreinonderzoek uitgevoerd, waarbij de wortelkluit van de omgewaaide boom werd onderzocht en crematieresten, aardewerkfragmenten en bulkmonsters van de aarde van de wortelkluit werden verzameld. Na het onderzoek werd het door de boomval gecreëerde gat in de heuvel met aarde van de rest van de wortelkluit terug opgevuld. Er werden fragmenten van twee verschillende urnen aangetroff en. Deze werden in de mate van het mogelijke terug aan elkaar gepuzzeld in het depot van het agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed te Vilvoorde. De crematieresten werden onderzocht in het kader van het CRUMBEL-project (Dalle et al. 2019). On the basis of the Digital Height Model Flanders, in 2016 in the forest area north of Postel . Abbey (Mole) a hitherto unknown and very well preserved burial mound complex discovered (Meylemans et al. 2017). In response to of this, the heritage service k.Erf (now Stuifzand) organized on February 15, 2019 a guided walk for those interested on this site. On "burial mound 5" (fig. 1), Mr. Jo Lommelen (room for local history Mol) noticed the presence of a number of shards and cremation remains during this walk. These were with the root ball of a blown down tree pulled out of the burial mound, and lay scattered about this clod. The find was reported as a coincidence to the Real Estate Agency. In the morning of 16 In February 2019, a field survey was carried out, in which the root ball of the fallen tree was examined and cremation remains, pottery fragments and bulk samples of the soil from the root ball were collected. After investigation the hole in the hill created by the tree fall was filled with backfilled with soil from the rest of the root ball. There were fragments of two different urns were found. This were put back together as far as possible in the depot of the Immovable Heritage Agency in Vilvoorde. The cremation remains were examined in the framework of the CRUMBEL project (Dalle et al. 2019).

International audience; This paper analyses the funeral practice of horsemen and horse burials in the context of late Avar-period social identity. I propose a methodology, tested on six cemeteries, that examines the place of the horse as a central character in burials and agent in the burial ritual, as well as a grave good and faunal deposit. The analysis also demonstrates other instances of the horse’s occurrence in the archaeological record of this early medieval culture. This phenomenon is generally associated with the nomadic cultures of the Eurasian steppes and can be seen as a marker of ethnicity. Therecent investigations demonstrate the existence of social stratification, although not strictly vertical, which in turn can be connected to the system of values of the elite in early medieval Europe.
