International audience; The water quality of the Chalk aquifer is degrading due to fertilizers and pesticides use which are classified as toxic to public health. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the transfer processes in the unsaturated zone of the Chalk aquifer using different environmental tracers (nitrate, atrazine and tritium). The study was conducted in an underground quarry in northern France (St. Martin le Noeud). The quarry provides direct access to the lower part of the unsaturated zone of the Chalk at a depth of 18–30 m. Fifteen sites throughout the quarry display percolation directly from the unsaturated zone. Since percolation intensity is heterogeneous at one site, a comparison was made between the variation of geochemical properties of ten samples from one site and the spatial variation of samples from 15 sites throughout the quarry. Using the Siegel-Tukey and Wilcoxon tests, we found that the variation between the sites is higher than the variation within one site. Therefore, one percolation sample can be used to represent one site. The transfer time of nitrate and atrazine is estimated based on its use in the cultivated fields. Pore water with no contamination indicates water infiltrated before the use of contaminants at the surface, and pore water with a high concentration of contaminants indicates water infiltrated during the use of contaminants at the surface. The transfer time of water molecules is estimated using the time series of tritium. Transfer velocities were computed for each environmental tracer (nitrate, atrazine and tritium) by dividing the estimated transfer time by the depth of each site. International audience; Several models can be used in order to represent the hydrological processes in an urbanized catchment. Developing those models has been with respect to modeling objectives, spatiotemporal scale and hydroclimatic and spatial data availability. These models can be explicit, hence complex and data demanding, or rather implicit, but lacking direct linking between the model parameters and the urbanization features. Leaning toward simplicity, we aim at developing an efficient modeling tool that permits implicitly to take into account the spatial configuration (urban landscape vs. natural surfaces) and temporal evolution at the scale of an urbanized hydrological catchment. Development of such tool can be achieved by complexifying step-by-step a starting model structure that is not dedicated to urbanized contexts. Before conducting structure modifications, the first step to take is to determine which model functions can be modified. In this paper, we analyze the initial structure and the sensitivity of the parameters that it contains to the presence of urban surfaces within the catchment. For this end, a large sample of 365 French and American catchments was prepared. These catchments are of various sizes going from 1 to 5000 km2 and represent a large panel of hydroclimatic conditions. The model was calibrated on two periods for each catchment, leading to 730 catchment-period couples for which the fraction of the urban cover was determined. The sensitivity analysis of the model parameters and other hydrological indicators with respect to this fraction was conducted for a selection of area-homogeneous 416 catchment-period couples. The results of this empirical study have shown (1) good model performances at the hourly time step regardless of the urban condition of the catchment and (2) that the model parameters and the hydrological indicators are significantly different with regards to intensively or slightly urbanized catchments, reflecting faster and greater streamflows for intensively urbanized situations.; Plusieurs modèles peuvent être utilisés pour représenter les processus hydrologiques en milieu urbain. Ces modèles sont développés suivant différentes approches en fonction de l'objectif de modélisation, de l'échelle spatio-temporelle et de la disponibilité des données hydroclimatiques et spatiales. Dans cet article, nous proposons de développer un outil parcimonieux et généralisable à partir d'une structure de modèle non dédié au contexte urbanisé. Dans un premier temps, nous analysons la structure de départ et la sensibilité des paramètres qu'elle contient à la présence de surfaces urbaines dans le bassin versant. Pour ce faire, un échantillon de 365 bassins versants français et américains a été construit. Le modèle est calé sur deux périodes pour chaque bassin versant, donnant ainsi 730 couples bassin-période pour lesquels la fraction urbaine dans le bassin a été déterminée. L'analyse de la sensibilité des paramètres du modèle hydrologique par rapport à cette fraction ainsi que d'autres indicateurs hydrologiques a été effectuée pour une sélection de 416 couples bassin-période, homogènes en surface. Les résultats montrent que les paramètres du modèle et les indicateurs hydrologiques présentent des différences significatives entre un échantillon de bassins versants fortement urbanisés et un échantillon de bassins versants faiblement urbanisés, traduisant des écoulements plus rapides et plus importants sur les bassins fortement urbanisés.

Degree-day snow models have the advantage of requiring limited data for running and for calibration, which is of the utmost importance for real-time hydrological forecasting or assessment of the impact of climate change on the hydrological regimes of snow-driven catchments. The CemaNeige model is a daily 2-parameter degree-day model that proved to be very efficient for discharge simulation when run together with a daily rainfall-runoff model (usually the GR4J model). In this work, we tried to represent in a more realistic way the snowpack, based on the integration of a SWE-SCA hysteresis. These SWE-SCA relationships aim at describing the heterogeneity of snow patterns both in space and time in the catchments. With this improved model, we showed that it is possible to make use of spatial satellite MODIS SCA data to improve the snow representation without deteriorating the discharge. The sensitivity of the relative weights between snow-based and discharge-based numerical criteria was assessed. Robustness of the model (i.e. its ability to be applied on independent periods and catchments) was improved.

National audience; En France, 60% de l’eau potable provient des l’aquifères. Dans le bassin de Paris, l’aquifère de la craie produit une grande partie de l’eau potable. Mais lSa qualité est dégradée, notamment à cause d’utilisation des pesticides en surface par les pollutions diffuses d’origine agricole, notamment par les nitrates et un produit de dégradation de l’atrazine, la dééthylatrazine. La craie est un milieu de multi-porosité qui complexifie les processus de transferts qui contrôle la qualité de l’eau souterraine. L’objectif de ce projet est de montrer les différents transferts dans la zone non saturée (ZNS) en milieu crayeux. Une approche spatiale a été réalisée qui montre que les caractéristiques de la ZNS jouent un rôle important aux processus de transferts : plus la ZNS est épaisse, moins de les contaminants sont trouvés dans l’eau souterraine ; l’argile favorise la dégradation d’atrazine et aussi accélère les transferts. La vitesse de transferts est aussi calculée en utilisant les traceurs agricoles.

National audience; Le modèle de neige CEMANEIGE créé au sein de l’IRSTEA a été conçu afin d’améliorer les performances du modèle pluie-débit GR4J dans les zones montagneuses. Il s’agit d’un modèle degré-jours à deux paramètres optimisables, à savoir un paramètre d’inertie thermique de la neige dont le but est de réguler la fonte en fonction de l’état thermique du manteau, ainsi qu’un paramètre de vitesse de fonte qui conditionne le volume journalier de fonte. Plusieurs études ont montré que l’utilisation des données d’enneigement MODIS conjointement aux données de débits permet de caler les paramètres des modèles de neige de manière plus robuste. Généralement, cela permet de mieux simuler la surface enneigée sans pour autant détériorer la simulation des débits. Une étude préliminaire a testé le calage du modèle CEMANEIGE avec des données d’enneigement (SCA) et a montré que le modèle en l’état actuel est incapable de produire une simulation d’enneigement suffisamment proche des données observées pour cela. La paramétrisation de l’évolution de la surface enneigée sur des modèles à larges mailles est une problématique courante au sein des modèles de surfaces continentales. Cette paramétrisation est basée sur l’hystérésis décrivant l’évolution du SCA en fonction du volume de neige (équivalent en eau de la neige) sur le bassin due. Cette hystérésis s’explique par le fait que le SCA a tendance à augmenter plus rapidement en période d’accumulation qu’il ne baisse en période de fonte pour une variation du volume de neige équivalente. Plusieurs paramétrisations de cette hystérésis ont été testées dans le modèle CEMANEIGE en ajoutant deux paramètres optimisables à la version de base. Ceux-ci sont déterminés grâce à un critère d’optimisation prenant en compte un critère de débit et un critère de SCA. Différentes approches de calage, ainsi que plusieurs pondérations entre le critère de débit et celui de SCA, ont été testées. L’introduction de l’hystérésis a permis d’améliorer nettement la performance du modèle CEMANEIGE pour la simulation du SCA, sans détériorer la simulation des débits. Les différentes analyses ont également permis de définir une méthode de calage robuste permettant de maximiser les performances des deux critères.

International audience; The hydrological balance of an Alpine catchment is strongly affected by snowpack dynamics. Melt-water supplies a significant component of the annual water budget, both in terms of soil moisture and runoff, which play a critical role in floods generation and impact water resource management in snow - dominated basins. Several snow models have been developed with variable degrees of complexity, mainly depending on their target application and the availability of computational resources and data. According to the level of detail, snow models range from statistical snowmelt-runoff and degree-day methods using composite snow-soil or explicit snow layer(s), to physically-based and energy balance snow models, consisting of detailed internal snow-process schemes. Intermediate-complexity approaches have been widely developed. Nevertheless, an increasing model complexity does not necessarily entail improved model simulations. Here a multilayer energy balance snow module is presented. The model has been developed at CIMA Research Foundation for hydrological purposes. Snow observations supplied by three Alpine sites were used for the model calibration, whose methodology is here described. Preliminary results of a comparison analysis against the snow module developed at UPMC and IRSTEA are shown and discussed.

A better knowledge of the accumulated snow on the watersheds will help flood forecasting centres and hydro-power companies to predict the amount of water released during spring snowmelt. Since precipitations gauges are sparse at high elevations and integrative measurements of the snow accumulated on watershed surface are hard to obtain, using snow models is an adequate way to estimate snow water equivalent (SWE) on watersheds. In addition to short term prediction, simulating accurately SWE with snow models should have many advantages. Validating the snow module on both SWE and snowmelt should give a more reliable model for climate change studies or regionalization for ungauged watersheds. The aim of this study is to create a new snow module, which has a structure that allows the use of measured snow data for calibration or assimilation.

Los métodos de optimización multi-objetivo tienen diversas aplicacionesen la ingeniería. En particular, en la hidrología son una herramienta de gran valor para encontrar un conjunto de soluciones de compromiso para dos objetivos hidrológicos cualesquiera en conflicto. Por su parte, los modelos de pronóstico hidrológico se emplean durante un evento lluvioso con el fin de predecir el caudal que se producirá en una sección de un río con un cierto tiempo de anticipación (horizonte de pronóstico).Como información de entrada suelen utilizar la lluvia y el caudal de la sección de interés, registrados en tiempo real. Sin embargo, durante un evento de gran magnitud, algunos sistemas de pronóstico experimentan una degradación en la calidad de los caudales observados en tiempo real, y en ciertos casos se produce incluso pérdida de dicha información. Cuando la cadena de transmisión de datos hidrometeorológicos (redpluviométrica e hidrométrica) a tiempo real falla, el desempeño del modelo puede decaer drásticamente respecto del esperado en un caso real. En particular, si lainformación a tiempo real del último caudal observado se pierde (daño en la estación hidrométrica, o en la red de comunicación, etc.) y no puede ser asimilado, el modelo hidrológico corre en una situación típica de simulación, ejercicio para el cual otro modelo (o el mismo, pero parametrizado de otro modo) podría conducir a resultados más confiables. Por esta razón, un método de optimización multi-objetivo puede ser empleado para encontrar soluciones de compromiso entre ambos criterios. En este trabajo fue llevada a cabo una optimización multi-objetivo del modelo GR4P, mediante el uso del algoritmo MOCOM-UA. Se observó que el método era incapaz de encontrar en todos los experimentos de manera robusta el mismo frente de Pareto, por lo quefueron llevadas a cabo un conjunto de modificaciones al método con el fin de mejorar la robustez. Finalmente, fue posible obtener una versión adaptada del algoritmo MOCOMUA con la cual se llega en los sucesivos experimentos a frentes de Pareto bien semejantes entre sí. Los trabajos fueron realizados sobre una cuenca pequeña de la Bretaña francesa.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; International audience; It is often argued that urban areas play a significant role in the catchments hydrology, but previous studies reported disparate results of urbanization impacts on stream flow. This might stem either from the difficulty to quantify the historical flow changes attributed to urbanization only or from the inability to decipher what types of urban planning is more critical for flows. In this study, we applied a hydrological model on 100 urban catchments in the United States and quantified the flow changes due to urbanization. Then, in a second step, we link these flow changes to spatio-temporal changes of urban/impervious surface, while often the fraction of urban area is used. We argue that these spatial changes of urban areas can be more precisely characterized by landscape metrics, which enable analyzing the patterns of historical urban growth. Landscape metrics combine the richness (the number) and evenness (the spatial distribution) of patch types represented on the landscape. Urbanization patterns within the framework of patch analysis have been widely studied but to our best knowledge previous research work has not linked them to catchments hydrological behaviors. In this study, we show the relation between the long-term change on stream flow using hydrological model and different landscape metrics of urbanized catchments. The Patch analysis was used to quantify the fragmentation of urban landscape pattern. This analysis can help understand why the impact on catchment hydrology of the same urban growth rate can be so diverse according to its spatial distribution.

International audience; Two different extreme streamflow estimation methods have been applied and compared over two catchments located on the Pacific coast of the British Columbia Canadian province: the classical deterministic approach Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) / Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) and the Simulation Climato-Hydrologique pour l’Appréciation des Débits EXtrêmes (SCHADEX) probabilistic approach, aiming at stochastically simulating millions of floods. Ratios between 10000-year return period daily precipitation values estimated by the SCHADEX method and PMP values are close to 1, while ratios between 10000-year return period daily streamflow values estimated by the SCHADEX method and PMF values are greater than 1.25. These ratio values are similar to the ones obtained within the comparison of PMF values and extreme streamflow estimation performed with the GRADEX method [Guillot and Duband 1967] for 43 different catchments, with ratios ranging between 1.08 and 3.52 [CFGB, 1994]. This paper illustrates the need of estimating extreme rainfall and streamflow by using the same hydroclimatologic inputs (in particular for the catchment rainfall series which should be estimated with the same catchment water balance hypothesis) in order to properly compare extreme rainfall and flood estimation methods. Such an approach allows to discuss the rainfall-runoff transformation differences obtained when different hydrological models are considered.; Deux méthodes d’estimation des débits extrêmes ont été appliquées sur deux bassins versants situés sur la côte Pacifique de la Colombie‑Britannique, province canadienne : la méthode déterministe classique Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) / Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) et la méthode probabiliste Simulation Climato‑Hydrologique pour l’Appréciation des Débits EXtrêmes (SCHADEX). Ces valeurs de ratios d’estimation de débits extrêmes sont du même ordre de grandeur que celles obtenues lors de la comparaison de valeurs de PMF et d’estimations de débits extrêmes réalisées avec la méthode du GRADEX [Guillot et Duband 1967] pour 43 bassins versants, pour lesquels les valeurs de ratios étaient comprises entre 1.08 et 3.52 [CFGB, 1994]. Cette communication illustre la nécessité de réaliser des estimations de pluies et crues extrêmes avec les mêmes entrées hydroclimatiques (et notamment des séries de pluies de bassin construites avec les mêmes hypothèses) pour réaliser une comparaison rigoureuse de méthodes de prédétermination. Une telle approche permettrait notamment de discuter des différences de transformation pluie‑débit réalisées par les différents modèles hydrologiques considérés.
