This qualitative and exploratory study aimed to understand social participation experiences in the context of Primary Health Care (PHC). Data was collected through participant observation, interviews, and field diary in the context of three Family Health Strategy (ESF) services in a municipality in southern Brazil. Different participation arrangements were observed in each ESF, mainly regarding the collective forces created, social organizations, and partnerships or their absence. Using the concept of social subject and its relational ethos, the thematic analysis discussed the most significant points of this experience in the categories: Social participation formalized in the Local Health Councils (CLS); and Singularities of the daily life of ESF as a way of effecting social participation. Building partnerships with different sectors of the municipality was important to increase the engagement of communities in actions to improve health in the territories, in addition to the relevance of legitimate representations in the spaces of CLS and the role of health teams in promoting participatory actions. The implications of the lockdown on collective activities in the ESF during the COVID-19 pandemic and the current need to retake these spaces were also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to discuss how the Integrative and Complementary Practices in Health (ICPH) have been a possibility of health and existence to inmates who attend the Cultural Association of the Development of the Inmate and Egress (ACUDA) of Porto Velho, RO. An ethnographic research was conducted during four months of participant observations of daily activities promoted by the Association as well as indepth interviews with inmates and staff. ACUDA assisted about ninety prisoners in close custody from three prisons in the city. Their daily routine in ACUDA included, in addition to offering ICPH, labor, educational, leisure and spiritual activities. Based on a poststructuralist analysis of the data and focusing the trajectories of two prisoners, it is discussed how ICPH presented itself as life enhancers. The ICPH enhanced life power from Practices of Affection, Care, Freedom and Citizenship, showing to be an important tool of subjective change, opening other meaning and life possibilities for prisoners. It is argued that, in order to have an effective social reintegration of prisoners, practices aimed to individual transformation need to be combined with broad social changes that recognize the citizenship and rights of these people. Objective. To estimate the rate of HIV and syphilis coinfection among pregnant women living in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as well as the association of coinfection with vertical HIV transmission and socioeconomic variables. Method. This analytical retrospective cross-sectional study employed data from the regular epidemiological surveillance system for the period from 2010 to 2013. Data were obtained regarding pregnant women with HIV and exposed children, syphilis in pregnancy, and congenital syphilis. Results. The study population included 1 500 HIV-positive women with deliveries from 2010 to 2013. Of these, 155 (10.3%) were also infected with syphilis, corresponding to an HIV and syphilis coinfection rate of 10.2% (± 1.5%). The coinfected group had lower education levels, higher prevalence of black women, and greater HIV exposure related to drug use by the woman or a partner. Coinfected women had more delayed HIV diagnosis (for example, during childbirth) and greater prevalence of lacking prenatal care (44%). Crude analysis showed an association between vertical HIV transmission and HIV and syphilis co-infection (PR = 2.1; 95%CI: 1.21-3.74; P = 0.01) that persisted in the adjusted analysis. Conclusion. A profile of increased vulnerability was identified among pregnant women with HIV and syphilis coinfection. A positive impact of the treatment to reduce congenital syphilis and eliminate vertical transmission of HIV depends on enhanced access to qualified health care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigated the contributions of a brief psychoeducational intervention during pregnancy to cope with HIV among women living with HIV. Participants were four mothers, 29 to 37 years old, two of them diagnosed during their current antenatal exams. A collective study-case design was used to examine mother's accounts before, after and during intervention sessions, as well as an assessment in the third month of the baby. Results revealed HIV diagnosis during pregnancy represented a situation of psychological risk, since it required a huge adaptation effort and an emotional burden caused by the possibility to transmit the disease to the child. In this context, the psychoeducational intervention showed positive contributions confronting HIV and to the emotional well being of the mothers.
