1. Machine learning accelerated prediction of Ce-based ternary compounds involving antagonistic pairs

Abstract

The discovery of novel quantum materials within ternary phase spaces containing antagonistic pair such as Fe with Bi, Pb, In, and Ag, presents significant challenges yet holds great potential. In this work, we investigate the stabilization of these immiscible pairs through the integration of Cerium (Ce), an abundant rare-earth and cost-effective element. By employing a machine learning (ML)-guided framework, particularly crystal graph convolutional neural networks (CGCNN), combined with first-principles calculations, we efficiently explore the composition/structure space and predict 9 stable and 37 metastable Ce-Fe-X (X=Bi, Pb, In and Ag) ternary compounds. Our findings include the identification of multiple new stable and metastable phases, which are evaluated for their structural and energetic properties. These discoveries not only contribute to the advancement of quantum materials but also offer viable alternatives to critical rare earth elements, underscoring the importance of Ce-based intermetallic compounds in technological applications.

2. Total synthesis, biological evaluation and biosynthetic re-evaluation of Illicium-derived neolignans.

Abstract

We report the first total syntheses of simonsol F (3), simonsinol (5), fargenin (4), and macranthol (6) in addition to syntheses of simonsol C (2), simonsol G (1), and honokiol (14). The syntheses are based upon a phosphonium ylide-mediated cascade reaction and upon natural product isomerization reactions which proceed through Cope rearrangements of putative biosynthetic dienone intermediates. As a corollary of the natural product isomerization reactions, we propose an alternative biosynthesis of honokiol (14), simonsinol (5), and macranthol (6) which unites the natural products in this family under a single common precursor, chavicol (7). Finally, we demonstrate that simonsol C (2) and simonsol F (3) promote axonal growth in primary mouse cortical neurons.

Abstract

We introduce the first extension of a Lattice Gas Automaton (LGA) model to accurately replicate observed emergent phenomena in granular materials with a special focus on previously unexplored jamming transitions by incorporating gravitational effects, energy dissipation in particle collisions, and wall friction. We successfully reproduce flow rate evolution, density wave formation, and jamming transition observed in experiments. We also explore the critical density at which jamming becomes probable. This research advances our understanding of granular dynamics and offers insights into the jamming behavior of granular materials.

6. Effects of Co substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of Sr(Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$P$_2$

Abstract

Although SrNi$_2$P$_2$ adopts the common ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure for $T\geq 325$ K, being in an uncollapsed tetragonal (ucT) state, on cooling below 325 K it adopts a one-third collapsed orthorhombic (tcO) phase where one out of every three P-rows bond across the Sr layers. On the other hand, SrCo$_2$P$_2$ only exhibits the uncollapsed ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure from room temperature down to 1.8 K. Neither SrNi$_2$P$_2$ nor SrCo$_2$P$_2$ manifest magnetic transitions down to 50 mK and 2 K, respectively. In this work we report the effects of Co substitution in Sr(Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$P$_2$, which allows for tuning the transition between the one-third collapsed and the uncollapsed structure. We find a rapid decrease of the one-third collapsed structural transition temperature with increasing Co fraction, until reaching full suppression for $x \geq 0.1$. Substitution levels in the range $0.11\leq x\leq 0.58$ show no signs of any transition down to 1.8 K in the magnetization or resistance measurements in the range $1.8\ \text{K}\leq T\leq 300\ \text{K}$. However, different magnetically ordered states emerge for $x\geq 0.65$, and disappear for $x\geq 0.99$, recovering the known paramagnetic properties of the parent compound SrCo$_2$P$_2$. These results are summarized in a phase diagram, built upon the characterization done on single crystals with different Co fraction. Both the magnetic and structural properties are compared to other systems with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure that exhibit magnetic ordering and collapsed tetragonal transitions. Abstract

The simplest single-field inflation models capture all the relevant contributions to the patterns in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observed today. A key assumption in these models is that the quantum inflationary fluctuations that source such patterns are generated by a particular quantum state -- the Bunch-Davies (BD) state. While this is a well-motivated choice from a theoretical perspective, the question arises of whether current data can rule out other, also well motivated, choices of states. In particular, as we previously demonstrated in arXiv:2104.13410 [hep-th], entanglement is naturally and inevitably dynamically generated during inflation given the presence of a "rolling" spectator scalar field -- and the resulting entangled state will yield a primordial power spectrum with potentially measurable deviations compared to the canonical BD result. For this work we developed a perturbative framework to allow a systematic exploration of constraints on (or detection of) entangled states with Planck CMB data using Monte Carlo techniques. We have found that most entangled states accessible with our framework are consistent with the data. One would have to expand the framework to allow a greater variety of entangled states in order to saturate the Planck constraints and more systematically explore any preferences the data may have among the different possibilities., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures, 3 appendices. 9. Weak itinerant magnetic phases of La2Ni7

Abstract

La2Ni7 is an intermetallic compound that is thought to have itinerant magnetism with a small moment ordering below 65 K. A recent study of single crystal samples by Ribeiro et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 105, 014412 (2022)] determined detailed anisotropic H-T phase diagrams and revealed three zero-field magnetic phase transitions at T1 ~ 61.0 K, T2 ~ 56.5K, and T3 ~ 42 K. In that study only the highest temperature phase is shown to have a clear ferromagnetic component. Here we present a single crystal neutron diffraction study determining the propagation vector and magnetic moment direction of the three magnetically ordered phases, two incommensurate and one commensurate, as a function of temperature. The higher temperature phases have similar, incommensurate propagation vectors, but with different ordered moment directions. At lower temperatures the magnetic order becomes commensurate with magnetic moments along the c direction as part of a first-order magnetic phase transition. We find that the low-temperature commensurate magnetic order is consistent with a proposal from earlier DFT calculations., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures Updated magnetic moment size based on data. 10. A Low Temperature Structural Transition in Canfieldite, Ag$_8$SnS$_6$, Single Crystals

Abstract

Canfieldite, Ag$_8$SnS$_6$, is a semiconducting mineral notable for its high ionic conductivity, photosensitivity, and low thermal conductivity. We report the solution growth of large single crystals of Ag$_8$SnS$_6$ of mass up to 1 g from a ternary Ag-Sn-S melt. On cooling from high temperature, Ag$_8$SnS$_6$ undergoes a known cubic (F-43m) to orthorhombic (Pna2$_1$) phase transition at $\approx$ 460 K. By studying the magnetization and thermal expansion between 5-300 K, we discover a second structural transition at $\approx$ 120 K. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the low temperature phase adopts a different orthorhombic structure with space group Pmn2$_1$ (a = 7.6629(5) \AA, b = 7.5396(5) \AA, c = 10.6300(5) \AA, Z = 2 at 90 K) that is isostructural to the room temperature forms of the related Se-based compounds Ag$_8$SnSe$_6$ and Ag$_8$GeSe$_6$. The 120 K transition is first-order and has a large thermal hysteresis. Based on magnetization and thermal expansion data, the room temperature polymorph can be kinetically arrested into a metastable state by rapidly cooling to temperatures below 40 K. We lastly compare the room and low temperature forms of Ag$_8$SnS$_6$ with its argyrodite analogues, Ag$_8$TQ$_6$ (T = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se), and identify a trend relating the preferred structures to the unit cell volume, suggesting smaller phase volume favors the Pna2$_1$ arrangement. We support this picture by showing that the transition to the Pmn2$_1$ phase is avoided in Ge alloyed Ag$_8$Sn$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$S$_6$ samples as well as pure Ag$_8$GeS$_6$., Comment: 45 pages, 13 figures

11. Small moment antiferromagnetic ordering in single crystalline La2Ni7

Abstract

Single crystals of La2Ni7 have been grown out of a binary, La-Ni melt. Temperature dependent, zero magnetic field, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and low field magnetization measurements indicate that there is a series of antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T1 = 61.0 \pm 0.2 K, T2 = 56.5 \pm 0.2 K and T3 = 42.2 \pm 0.2 K. The three specific heat anomalies found at these temperatures qualitatively have very small entropy changes associated with them and the anisotropic M(H) data saturate at ~ 0.12 {\mu}B/Ni; both observations strongly suggesting the AFM order is associated with very small, itinerant, moments. Anisotropic, H||c and H{\perp}c, {\rho}(H) and M(H) isotherms as well as constant field, {\rho}(T) and M(T) sweeps manifest signatures of multiple phase lines and result in H-T phase diagrams that are clearly anisotropic. Analysis of M(T) and M(H) data allow for the identification of the two lower temperature magnetically ordered states as antiferromagnetically ordered, with the moments aligned along the crystallographic c-axis, and the higher temperature, T2 < T < T1, state as having a finite ferromagnetic component. In addition, the metamagnetic transition at low temperatures, for H applied along the crystallographic c-axis (H||c) appears to be a near classic example of a spin-flop transition, resulting in a field stabilized antiferromagnetic state with the moments ordered perpendicular to the c-axis. Although the small moment ordering, and existence of multiple phase transitions in field and temperature, suggesting an energetic proximity of these states, could foretell a degree of pressure sensitivity, our measurements of R(T) for applied pressures up to 2.0 GPa indicate that there is very little pressure dependence of T1, T2 and T3., Comment: 22 figures

Abstract

Magic angle twisted bilayer graphene has emerged as a powerful platform for studying strongly correlated electron physics, owing to its almost dispersionless low-energy bands and the ability to tune the band filling by electrostatic gating. Techniques to control the twist angle between graphene layers have led to rapid experimental progress but improving sample quality is essential for separating the delicate correlated-electron physics from disorder effects. Owing to the 2D nature of the system and the relatively low carrier density, the samples are highly susceptible to small doping inhomogeneity which can drastically modify the local potential landscape. This potential disorder is distinct from the twist-angle variation which has been studied elsewhere. Here, by using low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy and planar tunneling junction measurements, we demonstrate that flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene can amplify small doping inhomogeneity that surprisingly leads to carrier confinement, which in graphene could previously only be realized in the presence of a strong magnetic field., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures

20. Characterization of the pressure coefficient of manganin and temperature evolution of pressure in piston-cylinder cells

Abstract

We report measurements of the temperature- and pressure-dependent resistance, $R(T,p)$, of a manganin manometer in a $^4$He-gas pressure setup from room temperature down to the solidification temperature of $^4$He ($T_\textrm {solid}\sim$ 50 K at 0.8 GPa) for pressures, $p$, between 0 GPa and $\sim$0.8 GPa. The same manganin wire manometer was also measured in a piston-cylinder cell from 300 K down to 1.8 K and for pressures between 0 GPa to $\sim$2 GPa. From these data, we infer the temperature and pressure dependence of the pressure coefficient of manganin, $\alpha(T,p)$, defined by the equation $R_p = (1+\alpha p) R_0$ where $R_0$ and $R_p$ are the resistance of manganin at ambient pressure and finite pressure, respectively. Our results indicate that upon cooling $\alpha$ first decreases, then goes through a broad minimum at $\sim$120 K and increases again towards lower temperatures. In addition, we find that $\alpha$ is almost pressure-independent for $T\gtrsim$60 K up to $p\sim$2 GPa, but shows a pronounced $p$ dependence for $T\lesssim$60K. Using this manganin manometer, we demonstrate that $p$ overall decreases with decreasing temperature in the piston-cylinder cell for the full pressure range and that the size of the pressure difference between room temperature and low temperatures ($T=1.8$ K), $\Delta p$, decreases with increasing pressure. We also compare the pressure values inferred from the magnanin manometer with the low-temperature pressure, determined from the superconducting transition temperature of elemental lead (Pb). As a result of these data and analysis we propose a practical algorithm to infer the evolution of pressure with temperature in a piston-cylinder cell.

We study Anosov families which are sequences of diffeomorphisms along compact Riemannian manifolds such that the tangent bundle split into expanding and contracting subspaces. In this paper we prove that a certain class of Anosov families: (i) admit canonical coordinates (ii) are expansive, (iii) satisfy the shadowing property, and (iv) exhibit a Markov partition.

24. Axonal microRNAs in cortical neuronal development and network connectivity

Abstract

Cognitive brain function requires the establishment of neuronal networks, which rely on the formation and elongation and branching of axonal projections and the differentiation of presynaptic terminals during development. The cellular events involved in these processes are dependent on protein translation locally in the axon compartment, which enables rapid changes of the axonal proteome in response to neurotrophic cues to regulate axon growth and patterning. How these dynamic changes of the axonal proteome are regulated locally in the axon has been a topic of intensive investigation in the past decade. MicroRNAs are small RNAs known to regulate protein expression by controlling mRNA translation repression/degradation. Recently, these regulatory RNAs have emerged as key players in the modulation of several molecular pathways underlying neuronal differentiation in early stages of development, making this class of non-coding RNAs interesting candidate regulators of local protein translation in the axon during development. However, the role of microRNAs in the axon, in particular axonal outgrowth and presynaptic differentiation, is only beginning to be unravelled. The work described here used next generation sequencing to identify a set of microRNAs enriched in the axonal fraction of primary cortical neurons cultured in compartmentalised microfluidic devices. Following the characterization of axonal microRNA expression levels, two microRNAs, miR-3470b and miR-99a, were selected for subsequent functional studies. The miR-3470 family are mouse-specific repeat-derived microRNAs originating from the B1-element Mus1. Repetitive elements have a major role in shaping the structure and function of the genome, but evidence on the functional relevance of lineage-specific repeat-derived microRNAs is still limited. Inhibition of miR-3470b during early development of primary cortical neurons produced a significant decrease in axonal growth. Moreover, we discovered a significant association between miR-3470b targets and proteins involved in cell-to-cell contact/synaptic pathways. To investigate the role of miR-3470b in the formation of neuronal networks we used a microelectrode array cortical culture model, in which spontaneous electrical activity shows a progressive increase from day 9 in vitro, reflecting the establishment of functional synaptic connections. Inhibition of miR-3470b from the beginning of the third week in culture, when its endogenous levels are high, produced a marked decrease in network activity, suggesting its role in neuron connectivity during cortical neuron development. Functional studies in cortical cultures showed that inhibition of miR-99a in primary cortical neurons produced a significant decrease in axonal growth, with overexpression of a miR-99a mimic increasing axonal length. By using bioinformatics, luciferase reporter assays and functional rescue experiments we could identify a new target for miR-99a in axonal development, heparan sulphate 3-O-sulphotransferase 2 (Hs3st2), an enzyme part of the biosynthesis of heparan sulphate proteoglycans, key players in axon-extracellular matrix interactions. To investigate the effect of axonal miR-99a in the emergence of neuron connectivity and the functioning of neuronal networks we used imaging of calcium transients to assess the spontaneous rhythmic activity of developing neuronal cultures, demonstrating how inhibition of miR-99a alters the patterns of calcium oscillation frequency and synchronicity, suggesting its relevance for network development and maturation. Overall, this work identified two microRNAs capable of regulating axonal outgrowth in the development of mouse cortical neurons in vitro. Both microRNAs were found to exert growth promoting actions in developing axons. Furthermore, this work demonstrated the ability of mR-99a and miR-3470b to act as regulators of neuronal network formation in vitro, raising potential implications to the development of neuronal connectivity in vivo.

28. Pressure-induced multiple phase transformations of the BaBi$_3$ superconductor

Abstract

Measurements of temperature-dependent resistance and magnetization under hydrostatic pressures up to 2.13 GPa are reported for single-crystalline, superconducting BaBi$_3$. A temperature - pressure phase diagram is determined and the results suggest three different superconducting phases ${\alpha}$, $\beta$, and $\gamma$ in the studied pressure range. We further show that occurrence of the three superconducting phases is intuitively linked to phase transitions at higher temperature which are likely first order in nature. $T_p$, which separates phase ${\alpha}$ from $\beta$ and $\gamma$, is associated with an abrupt resistance change as pressure is increased from 0.27 GPa to 0.33 GPa. Above 0.33 GPa, an "S-shape" anomaly in the temperature-dependent resistance curve, $T_\text S$, is observed and associated with the transition between the $\beta$ and $\gamma$ phases. Further increasing of pressure above 1.05 GPa suppresses this transition and BaBi$_3$ stays in $\gamma$ phase over the whole investigated temperature range. These high-temperature anomalies are likely related to structural degrees of freedom. With the ${\alpha}$ phase being the ambient-pressure tetragonal structure ($P4/mmm$), our first-principle calculations suggest the $\beta$ phase to be cubic structure ($Pm-3m$) and the $\gamma$ phase to be a distorted tetragonal structure where the Bi atoms are moved out of the face-centered position. Finally, an analysis of the evolution of the superconducting upper critical field with pressure further confirms these transitions in the superconducting state and suggests a possible change of band structure or a Lifshitz transition near 1.54 GPa in $\gamma$ phase. Given the large atomic numbers of both Ba and Bi, our results establish BaBi$_3$ as a good candidate for the study of the interplay of structure with superconductivity in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We report on a systematic study of Hall effect using high quality single crystals of type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2 with the applied magnetic field B//c. The residual resistivity ratio of 1330 and the large magnetoresistance of 1.5\times10^6 % in 9 T at 2 K, being in the highest class in the literature, attest to their high quality. Based on a simple two-band model, the densities (n_e and n_h) and mobilities (\mu_e and \mu_h) for electron and hole carriers have been uniquely determined combining both Hall- and electrical-resistivity data. The difference between ne and nh is ~1% at 2 K, indicating that the system is in an almost compensated condition. The negative Hall resistivity growing rapidly below ~20 K is due to a rapidly increasing \mu_h/\mu_e approaching one. Below 3 K in a low field region, we found the Hall resistivity becomes positive, reflecting that \mu_h/\mu_e finally exceeds one in this region. Abstract

Green and roasted coffee oils are products rich in bioactive compounds, such as linoleic acid and the diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, being a potential ingredient for food and cosmetic industries. An overview of oil extraction techniques most applied for coffee beans and their influence on the oil composition is presented. Both green and roasted coffee oil extractions are highlighted. Pressing, Soxhlet, microwave, and supercritical fluid extraction were the most used techniques used for coffee oil extraction. Conventional Soxhlet is most used on a lab scale, while pressing is most used in industry. Supercritical fluid extraction has also been evaluated mainly due to the environmental approach. One of the highlighted activities in Brazilian agribusiness is the industrialization of oils due to their increasing use in the formulation of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Green coffee oil (raw bean) has desirable bioactive compounds, increasing the interest of private companies and research institutions in its extraction process to preserve the properties contained in the oils. Abstract

We propose a new technique to study fast transitions during inflation, by studying the dynamics of quantum quenches in an $O(N)$ scalar field theory in de Sitter spacetime. We compute the time evolution of the system using a non-perturbative large-$N$ limit approach. We derive the self-consistent mass equation for several physically relevant transitions of the parameters of the theory, in a slow motion approximation. Our computations reveal that the effective mass after the quench evolves in the direction of recovering its value before the quench, but stopping at a different asymptotic value, in which the mass squared is strictly positive. Furthermore, we tentatively find situations in which the effective mass squared can be temporarily negative, thus breaking the $O(N)$ symmetry of the system for a certain time, only to then come back to a positive value, restoring the symmetry. Abstract

We report on the crystal growth and characterization of ABi3 (A=Ba,Sr) superconductors. Single crystals of both compounds were grown by the self-flux technique. BaBi3 crystallized in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/mmm and SrBi3 in a cubic structure with space group Pm-3m. Superconductivity at Tc = 6.0 K for BaBi3 and Tc = 5.6 K for SrBi3 have been confirmed through dc magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements. The dc magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressure shows a positive pressure coefficient of dTc/dP = 1.22 K/GPa for BaBi3 and a negative pressure coefficient of dTc/dP = -0.48 K/GPa for SrBi3. The normal state electrical resistivity shows that both compounds are highly metallic in nature. The upper critical fields Hc2 evaluated by resistivity under magnetic fields $\rho(T,H)$ are 22 kOe for BaBi3 and 2.9 kOe for SrBi3. A specific heat jump of $\Delta Ce/\gamma Tc = 1.05$ suggests weak coupling superconductivity in BaBi3, whereas $\Delta Ce/\gamma Tc = 2.08$ for SrBi3 is higher than the BCS theory value of 1.43, indicating a strong coupling superconductor.

Abstract

Tuning of the electronic properties of heavy fermion compounds by chemical substitutions provides excellent opportunities to further understand the physics of hybridized ions in crystal lattices. Here we present an investigation on the effects of Cd doping in flux-grown single crystals of the complex intermetallic cage compound YbFe$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$, that has been described as a heavy fermion with Sommerfeld coefficient of 535 mJ/mol.K$^{2}$. Substitution of Cd for Zn disturbs the system by expanding the unit cell and, in this case, the size of the Zn cages that surround Yb and Fe. With increasing amount of Cd, the hybridization between Yb $4f$ electrons and the conduction electrons is weakened, as evidenced by a decrease in the Sommerfeld coefficient, which should be accompanied by a valence shift of the Yb$^{3+}$ due to the negative chemical pressure effect. This scenario is also supported by the low temperature dc-magnetic susceptibility, that is gradually suppressed and evidences an increment of the Kondo temperature, based on a shift to higher temperatures of the characteristic broad susceptibility peak. Furthermore, the DC resistivity decreases with the isoelectronic Cd substitution for Zn, contrary to the expectation for an increasingly disordered system, and implying that the valence shift is not related to charge carrier doping. The combined results demonstrate excellent complementarity between positive physical pressure and negative chemical pressure, and point to a rich playground for exploring the physics and chemistry of strongly correlated electron systems in the general family of Zn$_{20}$ compounds, despite their structural complexity., Comment: J. Abstract

Attempts to modify gravity in the infrared typically require a screening mechanism to ensure consistency with local tests of gravity. These screening mechanisms fit into three broad classes; we investigate theories which are capable of exhibiting more than one type of screening. Specifically, we focus on a simple model which exhibits both Vainshtein and kinetic screening. We point out that due to the two characteristic length scales in the problem, the type of screening that dominates depends on the mass of the sourcing object, allowing for different phenomenology at different scales. We consider embedding this double screening phenomenology in a broader cosmological scenario and show that the simplest examples that exhibit double screening are radiatively stable., Comment: 36 pages, 5 figures

In de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity and bigravity, a non-minimal matter coupling involving both metrics generically re-introduces the Boulware--Deser (BD) ghost. A non-minimal matter coupling via a simple, yet specific composite metric has been proposed, which eliminates the BD ghost below the strong coupling scale. Abstract

If the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves is measured in the near-future, what could it tell us about bigravity? To address this question, we study massive bigravity theories by focusing on a region in parameter space which is safe from known instabilities. Similarly to investigations on late time constraints, we implicitly assume there is a successful implementation of the Vainshtein mechanism which guarantees that standard cosmological evolution is largely unaffected. We find that viable bigravity models are subject to far less stringent constraints than massive gravity, where there is only one set of (massive) tensor modes. In principle sensitive to the effective graviton mass at the time of recombination, we find that in our setup the primordial tensor spectrum is more responsive to the dynamics of the massless tensor sector rather than its massive counterpart. We further show there are intriguing windows in the parameter space of the theory which could potentially induce distinctive signatures in the B-modes spectrum., Comment: 20 pages, 1 table, 1 figure
