- Abstract
A set of dendrimeric silica (DS) reinforced polyethylene-based nanocomposites is prepared using a novel and straightforward in-situ catalyst supporting procedure by means of “in-situ” polymerization technique, labeled DS-SA. These materials are characterized with regard to molar masses, filler dispersion, thermal stability, crystalline characteristics, thermal properties and mechanical response and then compared with an equivalent set of samples prepared using a more common method, named DS-MAO, as well as a non-reinforced HDPE reference. The mechanical performance of all these materials is discussed based on the crystalline features and molar masses of the polymeric component together with the dispersion of the DS nanofiller. The results of this study confirm the potential of the DS-SA approach as an innovative and promising technique, with resulting materials achieving superior filler dispersion and significantly higher mechanical performance compared to their DS-MAO analogues at high filler loadings, while retaining the limit stretching ability of HDPE.

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological quality in seeds of haploidy inducers of different types and origins. To this end, between December 2015 and March 2016, a series of physiological quality assessments were conducted on nine genotypes inducing haploidy in corn, namely: the gymnogenetic inducers Stock 6, TAIL P1 and TAIL P2; the hybrid between the TAIL P1 x TAIL P2 inductors; the hybrid TAIL P2 x TAIL P1, analogous to the previous hybrid, but with inversion of the female parent at the crossing; and androgenetic inducers W23, 90109 igig, 91202 igig and 91207 igig. The tests carried out were germination, accelerated aging, emergence in a bed, emergence index, fresh and dry mass, length of aerial part and root and the ratio between these characteristics, the humidity and the weight of 100 seeds. The results indicated that the physiological quality was improved throughout the selection for greater haploid induction. The haploidy induction system (andorgenetic or gymnogenetic) does not interfere with physiological quality, however the results obtained reinforce the need for care in the multiplication and conservation of haploidy inducing seeds in tropical conditions for their use in breeding. - Abstract
An approach to obtain disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films is proposed using a common compression molding. For that, disentangled UHMWPE nascent powders from reactor are processed at temperatures lower than the main melting peak and at high pressure. Then, disentangled UHMWPE films obtained from homogeneous polymerization powders and from those that incorporate SBA-15 mesoporous silica can be easily achieved by this simple methodology. These disentangled UHMWPE based materials show very high crystallinity and, consequently, outstanding elastic modulus and hardness, both further increasing by presence of mesoporous SBA-15 in the hybrids.

- Abstract
Nanocomposites based on polypropylene have been prepared by in situ polymerization of propene in presence of mesoporous SBA-15 silica. Synthetic reactions were carried out with a zirconocene catalyst under either homogenous or supported conditions, the SBA-15 particles being used as carriers, and testing the immobilization of the catalytic system by several approaches. The existence of polypropylene able to crystallize within the mesoporous channels in the resulting materials is initially figured out from the appearance of a small endothermic process on heating calorimetric experiments, located at around 100 °C. The presence of polypropylene crystallites confined within the SBA-15 mesostructure is thereafter confirmed by SAXS measurements through the intensity variation of the SBA-15 first order reflection, this change being dependent on composition. Accordingly, polypropylene chains can grow up either outside or inside the SBA-15 channels during polymerization and the mesoporous particles maintain their ordered hexagonal arrangement. Mechanical response, as deduced from indentation measurements, improves with SBA-15 incorporation (without varying the final processing temperature). Thus, stiffness increases and deformability is reduced in the nanocomposites as the SBA-15 content rises. Simultaneously, polypropylene amount within channels is enlarged. Amount of SBA-15 is, then, the most important variable.

- Abstract
This work covers the synthesis and characterization of in-reactor Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene/ High Density Polyethylene, UHMWPE/HDPE, blends by in situ polymerization in a single reactor, through dual catalyst immobilization. These blends are synthesized combining two different catalysts (one for each targeted molar mass) co-im-mobilized in mesoporous Santa Barbara Amorphous, SBA-15, particles. First, the ethylene polymerization behavior is investigated, under different polymerization conditions. Then, studies on the thermal, mechanical and rheological characteristics of the produced in-reactor blends are presented and their performance is compared and discussed in a comprehensive way. Moreover, the effect of different filler contents on the properties exhibited by the resulting materials is investigated. Results have shown that these in-reactor UHMWPE/HDPE blends exhibit a complex thermal, mechanical and rheological behavior, which depends mainly on the proportion between the two polymer components and on the amount of SBA-15.

Chronic oral diseases are rarely studied together, especially with an emphasis on their common risk factors. This study examined the association of added sugar consumption on "chronic oral disease burden" among adolescents, with consideration of obesity and systemic inflammation pathways through structural equation modeling. A cross-sectional study was conducted of a complex random sample of adolescent students enrolled at public schools in São Luís, Brazil ( n = 405). The outcome was chronic oral disease burden, a latent variable based on the presence of probing depth ≥4 mm, bleeding on probing, caries, and clinical consequences of untreated caries. The following hypotheses were tested: 1) caries and periodontal diseases among adolescents are correlated with each other; 2) added sugar consumption and obesity are associated with chronic oral disease burden; and 3) chronic oral disease burden is linked to systemic inflammation. Models were adjusted for socioeconomic status, added sugar consumption, oral hygiene behaviors, obesity, and serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6). All estimators of the latent variable chronic oral disease burden involved factor loadings ≥0.5 and P values <0.001, indicating good fit. Added sugar consumption (standardized coefficient [SC] = 0.212, P = 0.005), high IL-6 levels (SC = 0.130, P = 0.036), and low socioeconomic status (SC = -0.279, P = 0.001) were associated with increased chronic oral disease burden values. Obesity was associated with high IL-6 levels (SC = 0.232, P = 0.001). Visible plaque index was correlated with chronic oral disease burden (SC = 0.381, P < 0.001). Our finding that caries and periodontal diseases are associated with each other and with added sugar consumption, obesity, and systemic inflammation reinforces the guidance of the World Health Organization that any approach intended to prevent noncommunicable diseases should be directed toward common risk factors. This paper reviews progress in organometallic -olefin polymerisation catalysts supported on zeolites or mesoporous silicas, discussing the role of these nanostructured materials in establishing new catalytic behaviours and polymer properties. Zeolites and other nanostructured materials show unique structural and surface features that have been used with advantage in the immobilisation of a large variety of catalysts, including -olefin polymerisation catalysts such as metallocene complexes. The characteristics of these materials, such as the ordered porous system, the large surface area and a tuneable acidity have a great impact on the immobilisation of the catalyst, with implication on the formation and nature of active species and polymerisation activity. Methods of preparation, diffusion limitations and confinement effects are rationalised and their role on the catalytic system and final polymer properties is discussed. This review is mainly focused on metallocene catalysts but examples of post-metallocene catalysts and olefin polymerisation behaviour of nonorganometallic complexes, covering Ziegler-Natta Ti/V catalysts and Phillips Cr catalysts, as well as metal-modified mesoporous carriers are described and discussed. Additionally, the effects of the nanostructured supports on the morphologies and physical properties of the polyolefins are also covered, and an account is made on how mesoporous materials can be used in the preparation of novel polyolefin nanoblends and nanocomposites.

- Abstract
Incorporation of a small content of undecenoic acid is proposed as an approach to introduce polar groups within the macromolecular architecture of high density polyethylene-based materials in order to promote an easier degradation after their useful service life. The influence of these hydrophilic groups during thermo and photo-oxidation processes has been then evaluated by several complementary techniques. In addition to different degradation rates, distinct ratios of oxidized species (lactones, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters and aldehydes) are found depending on: a) the initial material (neat high density polyethylene or ethylene-co-undecenoic acid copolymer); b) the type of oxidation (thermo or photoinduced); and c) the absence or presence of a specific prodegradant additive. An important increase of crystallinity has been observed in the final oxidized samples, indicating that the extent of degradation is rather significant.

The synthesis of self-reinforced polyethylene-based materials prepared by in-situ polymerisation is described. The methodology developed uses MCM-41 mesoporous material in a triple role: as catalyst carrier for ethylene polymerisation within its pores and channels in a first stage, as nanofiller of the formed polyethylene matrixdur ing its useful lifetime and, finally, as promoter for long-term waste disposal. As evidenced by FTIR analysis, when the polymer is formed under these confined conditions different interactions between the MCM-41 material and the polyethylene matrix occur, when compared to simple blends. The influence of the filler content on the rigidity of the resulting nanocomposites is analysed by microhardness measurements and corroborated by the storage modulus values: a significant increase in rigidity is observed as the filler contents rises. In addition, thermogravimetric studies show interesting features concerning the degradability of these materials. The catalytic action of MCM-41 during degradation involves a reduction of the energetic requirements for their cracking and, therefore, a positive environmental impact.

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is a widely used technique for assessing tissue physiology. Spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) pulse sequences are one of the most common methods for acquisition of DCE-MRI data, providing high temporal and spatial resolution with strong T(1)-weighting. Conversion of SPGR signal to concentration is briefly reviewed, and a new closed-form expression for concentration measurement uncertainty for finite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and baseline scan time is derived. This result is applicable to arbitrary concentration-dependent relaxation rate and is valid over the same domain as the theoretical SPGR signal equation. Expressions for the lower and upper bounds on measurable concentration are also derived. The existence of a concentration- and tissue-dependent optimal flip angle that minimizes concentration uncertainty is demonstrated and it is shown that, for clinically relevant pulse sequence parameters, this optimal flip angle is significantly larger than the corresponding Ernst angle. Analysis of three pulse sequences from the DCE-MRI literature shows that optimization of flip angle using the methods discussed here leads to potential improvements of 10-1166% in effective SNR over the 0.5-5.0 mM concentration range with minimal or no loss of measurement accuracy down to 0.1 mM. In vivo data from three study patients provide further support for our theoretical expression for concentration measurement uncertainty, with predicted and experimental estimates agreeing to within +/- 30%. Equations for concentration bias resulting from biases in flip angle and from pre-contrast relaxation time and contrast relaxivity (both longitudinal and transverse) are also derived in closed-form. The resulting equations show the potential for significant contributions to bias in concentration measurement arising from even relatively small mis-specification of flip angle and/or pre-contrast longitudinal relaxation time, particularly at high contrast concentrations.

Heterogeneous olefin polymerisation catalysts were prepared by combining zirconocene with a series of purely siliceous and Al-containingMCM- 41 supports with different Si/Al ratios, using simplified and improved versions of the well-known direct impregnation and “MAO pre-treatment” methods. The catalysts were tested in ethylene polymerisation. Analysis of polymerisation activities and kinetic profiles led to a rationalisation on the effect of support Si/Al ratios and methods used for catalyst preparation over the catalytic behaviour for ethylene polymerisations. Polymers were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. A mechanism is proposed to associate the formation or absence of fibrous morphology with polymerisation activities.

The objective of the present study was to characterize the mineralogy and micromorphology of soils with stagnic properties from the micro region of Araripina, in the Sertão Zone of Pernambuco State aiming to improve the understanding of their properties and pedogenic processes. Up to now, these soils have been poorly studied. They are characterized by the presence of a solodic or natric B horizon underlying a normal argic B horizon. Three representative soil profiles were selected in Ouricuri County. According to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources they are classified as: Natric Stagnic Sesquisol (profile 1); Solodic Stagnic Lixisol (profile 2), and Plinthic Stagnic Lixisol (profile 3). The mineralogy of the coarse fractions was determined macroscopically or by using a binocular magnifying lens, while the silt and clay fractions were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Selected horizons were micromorphologically described based on thin soil sections. The sand fraction of the studied soils is essentially composed by quartz, but feldspars and micas were also detected in the 2Btbn horizons. The silt fraction contains mostly quartz, feldspars and mica. The clay fraction is composed by kaolinite, mica, irregular interstratified minerals, smectite, and quartz. The highest amount of smectites and interstratified clay minerals were observed in the 2Btbn and 2BCn horizons. The solodic or natric B horizons (2Btbn) is characterized by the presence of a blocky microstructure and well developed illuviation and weathering argillans, while the overlying argic B horizon has a granular microstructure and no argillans. The differences observed in the clay mineralogy and micromorphological features between the argic B horizon and the underlying poorly drained solodic or natric B horizon indicate the presence of two parent materials. The position of this Na-rich B horizon, which is high in argillans, and the absence of evidences of clay eluviations from the overlying argic B horizon suggest a paleopedogenesis for this horizon. Results indicate that the soils were developed in two stages. The first pedogenesis occurred on the crystalline rock basement. One of the evidences is the edged stone layer on top of the solodic or natric B horizon, probably formed because of differential erosion, originating a desertic pavement. Afterwards, the soils were covered by layers of highly weathered sediments, related to the Araripe high tableland, which were mixed at varied proportions with the topsoil of the underlying weathered parent material. Both materials have been affected by current pedogenic processes since their deposition.

Ethylene was copolymerized with the non-conjugated diene 5,7-dimethylocta-1,6-diene by metallocene catalysts, homogenous and supported on MCM-41 mesoporous material activated by methylaluminoxane at room temperature. The employed metallocenes were (BzCp)2ZrCl2 (1), (C18H37Cp)2ZrCl2 (2), (CH3)2Si(Ind)2ZrCl2 (3) and /2C(Cp,Flu)ZrCl2 (4). Diene incorporation and thermal characteristic of the polymers were determined by 13CNMR and DSC. For the homogeneous systems, only the unbridged metallocene (1) showed a decrease in the activity as the diene content was increased. The ability for diene incorporation in the polymer chain followed the catalyst order (1) < (3) < (2) < (4). Regarding the supported systems, it was observed that all of them showed lower activity than the corresponding homogeneous catalysts. A sharp loss of activity in relation to the homogeneous counterpart was noticed by employing the ansa-metallocenes on MCM-41, especially the complex (4) supported catalyst. The effect of the mesoporous material as support on the behavior of the studied metallocene homogeneous systems in ethylene–diene copolymerization was an increase of polymer molecular weight, maintaining the same level of diene incorporation, except for catalyst (2), when a decrease of the diene incorporation was observed.

Six soil profiles were selected in a drained lowland area at Coruripe Sugarmill, aiming to characterize acid sulfate soils occurring in the lowplain of the Coruripe River Valley, in the coastal humid zone of the state of Alagoas. The soils were morphologically characterized, and samples were taken from each horizon to determine particle size distribution, bulk and particle density, total porosity, pH (H2O and KCl), organic matter, exchangeable bases and CEC, soluble sulfate and electrical conductivity of the saturation extract. The differences between the studied soils were mainly determined by the thickness, amount and degree of decomposition of the organic matter in the surface horizons, and are dependent on the position of the soils in the landscape. Large amounts of organic matter were found , with values between 15 and 77% of the soil weight, and have great influence on physical properties, despite the heavy clay texture of the soils. The sulfuric horizons were found to be between 45 and 90 cm depth, in the Gleisols, and between 15 and 43 cm depth in the Organosols. The cation exchange capacity is very high in all soil profiles, due to the large amounts of organic matter. Exchangeable aluminum and hidrogen were the dominant cations resulting in the distrophic character of profiles 2, 3 and 6, and allic character of profiles 1, 4 and 5. The electrical conductivity showed high values (≥ 4,0 dS m-1) in some of the sulfuric horizons due to the presence of H+ in the soil solution related to the formation of sulfuric acid from oxidation of sulfide. According to the results, the studied acid sulfate soils were classified in the Brazilian system as: Gleissolo Tiomórfico Hístico típico, álico; Gleissolo Tiomórfico Húmico típico, distrófico; Organossolo Tiomórfico Sáprico térrico, distrófico; Organossolo Tiomórfico Sáprico térrico, álico; Organossolo Tiomórfico Hêmico térrico, álico; Organossolo Tiomórfico Hêmico térrico, distrófico. The criteria established in the Brazilian System of Soil Classification appeared to be adequate to the classification of the studied soils.

Six soil profiles were selected in a drained lowland área at Coruripe sugarmill aiming to study chemical properties of acid sulfate soils occurring in the fluvial plain of the Coruripe river valley, Alagoas State, Brazil. The soils were morphologically characterized and samples were taken from each horizon to determine chemical properties of soil and saturation extract, using dry and wet samples (field conditions). A greenhouse liming experiment was carried out with compound samples collected at the sites of two selected profiles at depths of 0-20 and 20-40cm. The results showed that the greatest development of sulfuric horizons was related to the highest values of organic matter. The drying procedures of the samples in laboratory resulted in sulfide oxidation and sulfuric acid formation, changing soil natural field conditions. The electrical conductivity is not necessarily an indication of salinity, and can be related to the formation of sulfuric acid. The specific chemical properties observed in this study suggest research in sampling and analytical methods for these soils. According to the liming experiment 11 to 25 t ha-1 of CaCO3 were necessary to neutralize surface exchangeable aluminum. The drainage system control, in order to maintain a high water table, was considered to be the best management practice for sugarcane cropping in these lowland soils.

The effects of irrigation and cropping on the properties of soils were studied in the region of the low-medium São Francisco river basin. Six sites were selected, three of them involving Oxisols collected at the Senador Nilo Coelho Project, in Casa Nova, BA, while the remaining three involved Ultisols collected at the Curaçá Irrigation Perimeter in Juazeiro, BA. The selected sites involved non irrigated and irrigated land, different crops and irrigation methods. The soils were morphologically characterized and samples were taken from each horizon to determine particle size distribution, -0.034 and -1.52 Mpa percent moisture, bulk density, particle density, total porosity, macroporosity, microposity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The results showed that the agricultural use of soil with irrigation promoted morphological changes resulting in the development of an Ap horizon showing abrupt transition to the underlying BA horizon and very hard consistency. The BA horizon was also affected in sites undergoing more intensive management. A significant increase in the surface textural gradient of the ultisols was observed to be directly related to the intensity of the management and water use. In the studied soils, the agricultural use with irrigation promoted an increase in the bulk density, and a decrease in macroporosity, total porosity and, consequently, in the hydraulic conductivity of the surface horizon.

The effects of continuous sugarcane cropping on the physical and morphological properties of a clayey xanthic ferralsol were studied in the region of the Low Coastal Tablelands of Alagoas State, Brazil. Four sites were selected at Caeté mill, São Miguel dos Campos, State of Alagoas, Brazil, involving a native forest (Tn), and sugarcane fields, cultivated for periods of two (T2), eighteen (T18) and twenty-five (T25) years. The soils were morphologically characterized, and samples were taken from each horizon to determine particle size distribution, degree of floculation, moisture at - 0.034 MPa and - 1.52 MPa, soil bulk and particle densities, macroporosity and calculated total porosity. Undisturbed samples of the A, AB and BA horizons of each profile were collected to determine microporosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity and soil bulk density. The results showed that the agricultural use promoted morphological changes with the development of an Ap horizon showing abrupt transition to the underlying AB horizon and lack of structure. In relation to physical properties, the results indicated that the cultivation decreased the clay content of the surface horizon and increased significantly that of the sub-surface horizon. After an evident negative impact on physical properties after the first crop, the management practices promoted a new equilibrium, with increases in total porosity and water availability. On the other hand, the agricultural use resulted in a significant reduction of the saturated hydraulic conductivity in the surface horizon, when compared to the virgin forest site.

Made available in DSpace on 2011-04-09T12:14:34Z (GMT).
