In tropical wetlands, in addition to flooding, fire also contributes to the structure of biodiversity across environmental gradients. In fire‐prone ecosystems, flower‐rich fire refuges can be maintained by a seasonal patch‐burning mosaic. Here, we evaluate how a set of floral traits that influence and are related to the pollination systems of tree and non‐tree species varies in response to spatial patterns of fire frequency in a landscape with floodable and flood‐free areas. We classified the sampled species according to flower size, color, shape, symmetry, floral resource, type of pollination units, flowering duration, and anthesis time and compared them between floodable and flood‐free areas with high, moderate, or low fire frequency. We analyzed the functional richness in response to landscape metrics related to spatial patterns of fire frequency. The composition of floral traits of non‐tree species was stable, while tree species differed among fire frequency classes, especially in floodable areas. Many floral traits of tree species are ecological indicators, especially in floodable areas with high fire frequency. In contrast, among non‐tree species, only floral tissues as resources for pollinator were related to flood‐free areas with moderate/high fire frequency. The floral functional richness of the tree species positively linked with the modified Simpson diversity index, and for both trees and non‐trees, it negatively associated with the homogenization of the fire frequency (e.g., connectance based on probability that two adjacent sites belong to the same fire frequency class was negatively related to the functional richness of floral traits). These results demonstrate that homogenization of fire frequency in the landscape decreases the functional richness. Patches with different combinations of fire frequency and flood regime can support a shared set of floral traits besides those specifically related to a particular regime. The spatial heterogeneity of fire and flood patterns in wetlands needs to be preserved to support a higher diversity of pollination systems mediated by functional complementarity between the flowers of the tree and non‐tree species. The Cerrado biome is a biodiversity hotspot with a rich biota, and intense anthropogenic pressures. Despite its importance, it is still poorly understood how insects occupy different spatial dimensions of the landscape.We investigated how the beta diversity of plants influences the beta diversity of nymphalids at the regional‐scale (gallery forest vs. savannah) and local‐scale (transects). We expected greater beta‐diversity in nymphalid assemblages in gallery forests given the heterogeneity of plants and canopy structure.We sampled nymphalids in each habitat monthly for 1 year and observed 3459 individuals from 62 species. Nymphalidae abundance was significantly higher in the understory than in the canopy. Specifically, only 18% of the individuals were captured in the canopy of gallery forests compared to 11% in savannah canopies. Species richness was higher in gallery forests (55 species) compared to savannahs (34 species).Savannah transects were very similar in plant species composition and butterfly assemblages within the understory and canopy, whereas the species composition of plants and butterflies in gallery forests was highly heterogeneous which is consistent with the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis.Gallery forests are spatially more complex, which probably results in higher niche availability that may contribute to reduce the community saturation and help to maintain greater beta diversity in these habitats. Optimal sexual reproduction in relation to fire effects varies in Fabaceae species. Calliandra species have a large investment in reproduction. We investigated the consequences of fire during the fruiting period of Calliandra parviflora Benth., by checking fruit exposure to fire, pre‐dispersal seed predator infestation, and the effect of fruit burning on germination. We conducted this study in a floodable savanna in central Brazil, where we collected burnt and unburnt fruits. We measured the fruit and seed mass, and counted the number of damaged and undamaged seeds and live larvae per fruit. We analyzed the seed germination percentage from burnt and unburnt fruits. The burnt fruits presented greater mass than the unburnt fruits, despite their seed mass being similar. The number of damaged seeds per fruit was only slightly higher in burnt compared to unburnt fruits (p = 0.047). The number of larvae on pre‐dispersal seeds per fruit varied from 0 to 4 and did not differ between burnt and unburnt fruits. The germination percentage of unburnt fruit seeds (mean = 22 ± 17%), was significantly higher than that of burnt fruit (mean = 3.0 ± 2.0%, p < 0.001). Fire during fruiting or pre‐dispersion decreases seed germination from 22 to 3%, but it does not hurt vegetative regeneration or resprout capacity of C. parviflora, which is a facultative seeder. Hence, we suggest that C. parviflora has potential for post‐fire restoration in floodable open grassy savannas, in the ecotone between Cerrado and Pantanal, because this species may sprout quickly after first post‐fire rains. Recently, the availability of cheap and effective survey methods increased the number of forest canopy studies. Several studies have described butterfly communities in the upper forest stratum. However, these studies were all conducted in tall forests (20–60 m canopy height). Here we aim to assess the stratification of fruit-feeding butterfly species in two vertical strata of a semi-deciduous seasonal forest. In addition, we present a field guide to assist in future butterfly monitoring. This study was carried out in two areas of semi-deciduous seasonal forest in the Serra da Bodoquena National Park, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Sampling monthly for a year both the, canopy and the understory, we recorded 4229 individuals of 65 species. The species community of fruit-feeding butterflies showed a clear vertical stratification. The composition differed significantly between the two vertical strata, with a higher species richness and abundance in the understory, but less diversity compared to the canopy. Species were distributed heterogeneously between the understory and the canopy in this forest of lower canopy height. Considering published literature of the Mato Grosso do Sul State, the Serra da Bodoquena is one of the most species rich areas with regard to fruit-feeding butterflies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

- Abstract
The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

- Abstract
Em novembro de 2015, uma grande barragem de rejeitos de mineração no Brasil, pertencente à empresa Samarco rompeu, gerando uma onda expressiva de lama tóxica que se espalhou por todo Rio Doce abaixo matando 19 pessoas, afetando a biodiversidade ao longo de vários quilômetros do rio, bem como áreas ripárias e costa do oceano Atlântico. Além das perdas desastrosas de vidas humanas e perdas socio-econômicas, estimamos perdas de serviços ambientais regionais em torno de R$1,694 bilhões por ano. Embora nossa estimativa seja conservativa, é seisvezes maior do que as multas impostas à Samarco pelo IBAMA. Para reduzir essas discrepâncias entre perdas estimadas e multas aplicadas, defendemos uma política em prol de “caução ambiental” que considere o risco potencial e os serviços ambientais que poderiam ser afetados em casos de irresponsabilidades nas atividades em áreas de mineração. Cauções e seguros ambientais são instrumentos políticos comumente utilizados em muitos países, mas não há políticas claras a este respeito no Brasil. Cauções ambientais são possivelmente mais efetivos em assegurar a reparação ambiental do que multas pósdesastres, as quais geralmente são inadequadas e não pagas. Estimamos também que pelo menos 126 represas de contenção podem se romper nos próximos anos. Esses eventos podem possivelmente ter consequências ambientais e sociais graves, evidenciando a necessidade de estratégias de gestão de desastres para grandes escalas de operações de mineração.

Throughout the world, natural habitats have been replaced by pastures. Thus, bird conservation requires making pastures more accessible for birds. The use of pastures by birds inhabiting the surrounding natural habitats may be affected by the structure of pastures and their distance from natural habitats. In this study we tested whether bird species richness, composition and abundance in pastures of the Brazilian Cerrado are linked to habitat and dietary requirements and affected by vegetation structure and the distance to natural habitats. We found that pastures with more trees and shrubs had greater richness of forest birds, forest insectivorous birds and semi-forest insectivorous-frugivorous birds. Pastures with taller trees had greater richness of semi-forest insectivorous birds, and pastures closer to natural habitats had greater richness of forest frugivorous birds. Bird composition in pastures changed according to vegetation structure and distance from natural habitats, and the abundance of some bird species was positively correlated to vegetation structure and negatively correlated to distance from natural habitats. These findings highlight the importance of trees and shrubs in pastures and maintaining patches of natural habitats near pastures. Management measures can make pastures more accessible for birds from surrounding natural environments and could help in bird conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One important source of variation present in all biodiversity sampling protocols is species detection probability (i.e. the probability of observing a species, given that it is present at a site). In tropical forests, many species have very low probability of detection, and thus they can be easily overlooked. Measuring the detection probability (detectability) of these species is important to determine the sampling effort required to accurately record them. In the present study, the variation of detectability of fruit-feeding butterflies and moths between strata (understory vs. canopy), temporally across sampling months, and in relation to observed abundance were examined in the Amazon and Atlantic forests using models of logistic regression. These results enabled the estimation of the sampling effort required to detect a given fraction of the total assemblage. Species detectability was positively correlated with observed abundance for both butterflies and moths. In the Amazon, most species were more detectable in a specific stratum (canopy or understory). Biblidinae, Charaxinae and Satyrini showed temporal variation in detection probability in Atlantic Forest, with distinct peaks during July- August, November, and March. In contrast, Brassolini and Coeini showed peak detectability in January and March, respectively. The vertical and temporal variation in detection probability means that sampling effort must be applied strategically to the correct seasons and strata to improve the accuracy of results. The estimated minimum sampling effort to detect 70% of the species present in these tropical forests is 428 trap-days in Atlantic Forest and 1435 trap-days in the Central Amazon forest.
