Background The current study’s purpose is to compare hip structural analysis variables in a group of postmenopausal women with sarcopenia and another group of postmenopausal women with normal skeletal muscle mass index. To do so, the current study included 8 postmenopausal women (whose ages ranged between 65 and 84 years) with sarcopenia and 60 age-matched controls (with normal skeletal muscle mass index (SMI)). Body composition and bone parameters were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). International audience; Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength. The aim of the current study was to explore the influence of sarcopenia on bone health parameters in a group of elderly Lebanese men. To do so, we compared bone health parameters (Bone Mineral Content (BMC), Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and femoral neck geometry indices) in a group of elderly men with sarcopenia and a group of elderly men with normal Skeletal Muscle mass Index (SMI). 23 sarcopenic men (SMI < 7 kg/m 2) and 23 men with normal SMI (>7 kg/m 2) participated in our study. Body composition and bone variables were measured by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). DXA measurements were completed for the Whole Body (WB), Lumbar spine (L1-L4), Total Hip (TH) and Femoral Neck (FN). Hip geometry parameters including Cross-Sectional Area (CSA), Cross-Sectional Moment of Inertia (CSMI), section modulus (Z), Strength Index (SI) and Buckling Ratio (BR) were derived by DXA. Age and height were not significantly different between the two groups. Weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), lean mass, fat mass, appendicular lean mass, SMI, WB BMC, TH BMD, FN BMD, CSA, CSMI and Z were significantly higher in non-sarcopenic men compared to sarcopenic men. In the whole population , lean mass was the strongest determinant of bone health parameters. After adjusting for lean mass, there were no significant differences regarding bone health parameters between the two groups. In conclusion, the present study suggests that sarcopenia negatively influences bone health parameters in elderly Lebanese men.

Summary Introduction The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of resistance, endurance, and combined exercise training on bone mass in a group of elderly subjects. Summary of facts and results Fifty-two healthy elderly subjects (35 women and 17 men) whose ages range between 65 and 75 years were included in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to a resistance training group, an endurance training group, a combined resistance and endurance training group or a control group. The bone mineral density at the whole body, lumbar spine, total hip and femoral neck was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry before and after 12 months of intervention. At the end-point of this experiment, bone mineral density at the total body, lumbar spine, total hip, and femoral neck increased in the resistance group (P Conclusion Resistance training can stimulate bone gain while endurance training can mitigate bone loss at clinically important sites of osteoporotic fractures in elderly subjects.

This study aims to assess for the first time in the Middle East, the clinical benefits of an FLS model established in a hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. It shows a significant 54% relative risk reduction in re-fracture incidence, confirming the patient-oriented benefit of diffusing this system in the Middle East region. Few hospitals in Lebanon applied Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) program. A type A FLS is established at Bellevue hospital in Beirut in July 2013. This study aims to assess its clinical benefits and efficacy. Patients aged 50 years and above presenting to our hospital with minimal trauma fracture from July 2012 till June 2014 are enrolled. These are divided into two groups, before (group A) and after (group B) FLS implementation. Both groups are compared for re-fracture incidence, bone health assessment; osteoporosis treatment maintenance, and death in a 2-year follow-up. Nighty-eight patient composing group B are compared to 100 patients in the group A. Resume Introduction L’objectif de cette etude est d’explorer les effets aigus d’un travail de developpe-couche lourd (trois repetitions a 80 % de la force maximale [Fmax]) et d’un travail de developpe-couche leger (quatre repetitions a 20 % de la Fmax) sur la puissance developpee a 40 % de la Fmax en developpe-couche. Synthese des faits Dix jeunes hommes (20 a 35 ans) entraines en musculation ont participe a cette etude. Les sujets sont venus a quatre reprises au laboratoire. A la premiere seance, la Fmax en developpe-couche a ete mesuree. A la deuxieme seance, et apres un echauffement standardise, la puissance a 40 % de la Fmax a ete evaluee par un accelerometre (Myotest Pro) a quatre reprises aux temps suivants : zero minute, deux minutes, quatre minutes et huit minutes. Lors de la troisieme et la quatrieme seance, et apres le meme echauffement, les sujets realisaient la meme seance mais precedee d’une contraction conditionnee legere ou lourde. Les puissances developpees a 40 % de la Fmax apres le travail de developpe-couche leger etaient significativement superieures a celles developpees apres le travail lourd et celles realisees en conditions normales a deux et huit minutes. Conclusion Cette etude suggere que les charges legeres peuvent induire une meilleure potentialisation post-effort que les charges lourdes lorsqu’elles sont utilisees chez les sujets entraines en musculation pour le mouvement de developpe-couche.
