ABSTRACT Infection control measures to prevent viral and bacterial infection spread are critical to maintaining a healthy environment. Pathogens such as viruses and pyogenic bacteria can cause infectious complications. Viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 are known to spread through the aerosol route and on fomite surfaces, lasting for a prolonged time in the environment. Developing technologies to mitigate the spread of pathogens through airborne routes and on surfaces is critical, especially for patients at high risk for infectious complications. Multifunctional coatings with a broad capacity to bind pathogens that result in inactivation can disrupt infectious spread through aerosol and inanimate surface spread. This study uses C-POLAR, a proprietary cationic, polyamine, organic polymer with a charged, dielectric property coated onto air filtration material and textiles. Using both SARS-CoV-2 live viral particles and bovine coronavirus models, C-POLAR-treated material shows a dramatic 2-log reduction in circulating viral inoculum. This reduction is consistent in a static room model, indicating simple airflow through a static C-POLAR hanging can capture significant airborne particles. Finally, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are applied to C-POLAR textiles using a viability indicator to demonstrate eradication on fomite surfaces. These data suggest that a cationic polymer surface can capture and eradicate human pathogens, potentially interrupting the infectious spread for a more resilient environment.IMPORTANCEInfection control is critical for maintaining a healthy home, work, and hospital environment. We test a cationic polymer capable of capturing and eradicating viral and bacterial pathogens by applying the polymer to the air filtration material and textiles. The data suggest that the simple addition of cationic material can result in the improvement of an infectious resilient environment against viral and bacterial pathogens.

Gut health is important for nutrition absorption, reproduction, and lactation in perinatal and early weaned mammals. Although melatonin functions in maintaining circadian rhythms and preventing obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, and viral infections, its impact on the gut microbiome and its function in mediating gut health through gut microbiota remain largely unexplored. In the present study, the microbiome of rats was monitoring after fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and foster care (FC). The results showed that FMT and FC increased intestinal villus height/crypt depth in perinatal rats. Mechanistically, the melatonin-mediated remodeling of gut microbiota inhibited oxidative stress, which led to attenuation of autophagy and inflammation. In addition, FMT and FC encouraged the growth of more beneficial intestinal bacteria, such as Allobaculum, Bifidobacterium, and Faecalibaculum, which produce more short-chain fatty acids to strengthen intestinal anti-oxidation. These findings suggest that melatonin-treated gut microbiota increase the production of SCFAs, which improve gut health by reducing oxidative stress, autophagy and inflammation. The transfer of melatonin-treated gut microbiota may be a new and effective method by which to ameliorate gut health in perinatal and weaned mammals.

During alloy solidification, many free grains in the melt have important effects on the final microstructure and composition distributions. In this paper, grain motion is calculated based on an interface tracking method coupled with a cellular automata (CA) method. First, the interface tracking capabilities of the level set, simple linear interface calculation (SLIC), and piecewise linear interface calculation (PLIC) methods are compared, and the fidelity of the three models is explored. Then, the coupling degrees of these three models with the CA method are analyzed. Finally, the PLIC method is used to simulate various behaviors of grain movement and to verify the authenticity of the dendrite motion calculation. The simulation results show that the VOF methods more readily coupled with the CA model than the level set method, and it is more suitable for calculating the motion behaviors of dendrites. Among the VOF methods, the interface reconstructed by the SLIC method is relatively rough and can only calculate objects with simple morphologies. The PLIC method has a fine interface and small error in the calculation of dendrite movement, and it does not significantly impact the subsequent calculations.

BackgroundTraumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered a risk factor for the development of stroke (Hemorrhagic Stroke and Ischemic Stroke). We performed this systemic review and meta-analysis to determine the association of prior TBI with the subsequent diagnosis of stroke.MethodsWe systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for cohort studies involving TBI patients who subsequently developed stroke. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed by two separate researchers. Data were analyzed with random-effects models, and a secondary analysis stratified by the type of stroke was performed.ResultsOf the 741 identified studies, 6 studies were eligible for inclusion, with more than 2,200,000 participants. TBI predicted the occurrence of stroke in the random-effect model, with a relative risk of 2.14 (95% CI 1.97–2.32, P < 0.001). Furthermore, in the analysis of each type of stroke, TBI was associated with the incidence of ischemic stroke (RR 1.351 95% CI 1.212–1.506, P < 0.001), and TBI was associated with an even greater increase in the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke (RR 6.118 95% CI 5.265–7.108, P < 0.001).ConclusionOur meta-analysis showed that TBI was associated with a more than two-fold increase in the risk of stroke. However, owing to the high degree of heterogeneity, decisions should be made on a patient-by-patient basis. The occurrence of TBI is associated with the development of both hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, and the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is much higher than that of ischemic stroke in TBI patients.

Abstract Background Inconsistencies have existed in research findings on the association between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ADIPOQ, triggering this up-to-date meta-analysis. Methods We searched for relevant studies in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, CBM, VIP, and WanFang databases up to 1st July 2017. We included 19,106 cases and 31,629 controls from 65 published articles in this meta-analysis. STATA 12.0 software was used for all statistical analyses. Results Our results showed that rs266729 polymorphism was associated with the increased risk of CVD in dominant model or in heterozygote model; rs2241766 polymorphism was associated with the increased risk of CVD in the genetic models (allelic, dominant, recessive, heterozygote, and homozygote). In subgroup analysis, significant associations were found in different subgroups with the three SNPs. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis showed that heterogeneity might be explained by other confounding factors. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the results of our meta-analysis were stable and robust. In addition, the results of trial sequential analysis showed that evidences of our results are sufficient to reach concrete conclusions. Conclusions In conclusion, our meta-analysis found significant increased CVD risk is associated with rs266729 and rs2241766, but not associated with rs1501299.

At present, the calculation of three-dimensional (3D) dendrite motion using the cellular automata (CA) method is still in its infancy. In this paper, a 3D dendrite motion model is constructed. The heat, mass, and momentum transfer process in the solidification process of the alloy melt are calculated using a 3D Lattice–Boltzmann method (LBM). The growth process for the alloy microstructure is calculated using the CA method. The interactions between dendrites and the melt are assessed using the Ladd method. The solid–liquid boundary of the solute field in the movement process is assessed using the solute extrapolation method. The translational velocity of the equiaxed crystals in motion is calculated using the classical mechanical law. The rationality of the model is verified and the movement of single and multiple 3D equiaxed crystals is simulated. Additionally, the difference between 3D dendrite movement and two-dimensional (2D) dendrite movement is analyzed. The results demonstrate that the growth of moving dendrites is asymmetric. The growth velocity and falling velocity of the dendrite in the 3D model are faster than that in 2D model, while the simulation result is more realistic than that of the 2D model. When multiple dendrites move, the movement direction of the dendrites will change due to the merging of flow fields and other factors.

A three-dimensional cellular automata-lattice Boltzmann (CA-LBM) coupling model is established to simulate the facet growth process and the controlled cooling growth process of Cs2AgBiBr6 perovskite single crystals. In this model, the LBM method is used to calculate the real-time solute field, the CA method is used to simulate the crystal growth process driven by supersaturation of solute, and the geometric parameter g related to the adjacent grid is introduced to reduce the influence of grid anisotropy. The verification of the model is achieved by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results. The comparison results show that a smaller cooling rate is helpful for the growth of large-size single crystals, which verifies the rationality and correctness of the model.

In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann–cellular automata (LBM-CA) model with dynamic and static grids was used to study the growth of three-dimensional (3D) multidendrites under directional solidification with random preferred angles. In the static grid, the temperature field, flow field, and solute field during solidification were calculated by the LBM method, and in the dynamic grid, each dendrite evolution was calculated based on the CA method at its preferential crystallographic orientation. The coupling of LBM and CA was made by interpolation of the correlation quantities between the two sets of grids. The effects of wall-equiaxed crystal density on the number of columnar crystals and the thickness of the equiaxed crystal layer were studied by this model. The results showed that the density of the wall-equiaxed crystal has little effect on the number of columnar crystals and the thickness of the equiaxed crystal layer. When other conditions were the same, the lower the undercooling, the fewer the columnar crystals, and the thicker the equiaxed layer. In addition, the smaller the heat transfer coefficient, the lower the number of columnar grains, and the smaller the thickness of equiaxed grains.

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MS) comprises a set of conditions that are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Numerous epidemiological studies on MS have been conducted, but there has not been a systematic analysis of the prevalence of MS in the Chinese population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the pooled prevalence of MS among subjects in Mainland China. Methods We performed a systematic review by searching both English and Chinese literature databases. Random or fixed effects models were used to summarize the prevalence of MS according to statistical tests for heterogeneity. Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were performed to address heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger’s test. Results Thirty-five papers were included in the meta-analysis, with a total population of 226,653 Chinese subjects. Among subjects aged 15 years and older, the pooled prevalence was 24.5 % (95 % CI: 22.0–26.9 %). By sex, the prevalences were 19.2 % (95 % CI: 16.9–21.6 %) in males and 27.0 % (95 % CI: 23.5–30.5 %) in females. The pooled prevalence of MS increased with age (15–39 years: 13.9 %; 40–59 years: 26.4 %; and ≥60 years: 32.4 %). Individuals living in urban areas (24.9 %, 95 % CI: 18.5–31.3 %) were more likely to suffer from MS than those living in rural areas (19.2 %, 95 % CI: 14.8–23.7 %). Hypertension was the most prevalent component of MS in males (52.8 %), while the most prevalent component of MS for females was central obesity (46.1 %). Conclusions Our systematic review suggested a high prevalence of MS among subjects in Mainland China, indicating that MS is a serious public health problem. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the prevention and control of MS.

A new 3D cellular automata-lattice Boltzmann method (CA-LBM) coupling model is proposed to simulate the formation of facet and facet dendrites in directional solidification. In this model, the CA method is used to simulate the crystal growth process and the LBM method is used to simulate the physical field in the calculation area. A new three-dimensional anisotropic function is introduced, and the model is modified by interpolation and neighborhood restriction. We add the remelting calculation model. The interaction between interface energy anisotropy and dynamic anisotropy is solved reasonably. The growth process and morphology of small plane and small plane dendrites were simulated.

In this paper, a new method is proposed to solve the solute field of moving grains, and a Cellular automaton (CA)-Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)-Semi rebound format(Ladd) coupling model which can accurately simulate the motion behavior of multiple dendrites is established. The growth process of microstructure in the solidification process of Al-4.7% Cu alloy ingot was calculated by Cellular automaton (CA) method, the momentum, heat, and mass transfer processes were calculated by Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), and the melt-dendrite sharp interface interaction was treated by Ladd method. The reliability of the model is verified, and then the growth and movement of single dendrite and multiple dendrites under the action of gravity field are simulated. The simulation results show that the growth and movement mode of multiple dendrites are quite different from that of single dendrite, which is shown in two aspects: (1) the original motion state of dendrites is changed by the combination of flow field, which slows down the falling speed of dendrites to a certain extent; (2) the fusion of solute field between dendrites changed the original growth mode of boundary dendrites and increased their rotation speed.

Background Psychological disorders are common in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients, and the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of psychological distress and to determine the influence factors associated with psychological distress among DM patients in the Jilin province of China. Methods and Materials Multistage, stratified cluster sampling was used in this cross-sectional study. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was used to assess psychological status with the total score of ≥4 as the threshold for psychological distress. Results A total of 1,956 subjects with DM were included in the study. Out of this total diabetic participants, 524 (26.8%) had psychological distress. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that low educational level, divorce or separation from one’s spouse, low family average monthly income, short sleep duration, being aware of DM status, and multiple co-morbidities are positively associated with psychological distress (all P

Silicon facet formation during directional solidification is simulated by cellular automaton (CA) modeling in which anisotropic interfacial energy and kinetics are considered. Numerical simulations were performed with different anisotropy strengths of interfacial energy and they show good agreement with analytical equilibrium shapes obtained by the Gibbs-Thomson equation. We also compare our results of anisotropic kinetics with in situ observation experiments and the results of the phase model to verify the accuracy of our model. Simulation results of facet formation show that perturbation is promoted to the corner by the negative temperature gradient of the interface and the heat accumulation location leads to the disappearance of small corners.

A modeling approach combining the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method and the cellular automaton (CA) technique are developed to simulate the faceted front to equiaxed structure transition (FET) of directional solidification of multi-crystalline silicon. The LB method is used for the coupled calculation of velocity, temperature and solute content field, while the CA method is used to compute the nucleation at the silicon-crucible interface and on SiC particles, as well as the mechanism of growth and capturing. For silicon, the interface kinetic coefficient is rather low, which means that the kinetic undercooling can be large. A strong anisotropy in the surface tension and interfacial kinetics are considered in the model. A faceted front in conjunction with a sufficiently high carbon content can lead to equiaxed growth by nucleation on SiC. The temperature gradient in Si melt at the interface is negative, which leads to the occurrence of a faceted interface. The higher the absolute value of thermal gradients, the faster the growth velocity. Due to differences in the degree of undercooling, there will be the unification of facets in front of the solid-liquid interface. Transitions from faceted front to thermal equiaxed dendrites or faceted equiaxed grains are observed with smaller or larger impurity contents, respectively.

BACKGROUND: NAD(H) kinase (NADK) is the key enzyme that catalyzes de novo synthesis of NADP(H) from NAD(H) for NADP(H)-based metabolic pathways. In plants, NADKs form functional subfamilies. Studies of these families in Arabidopsis thaliana indicate that they have undergone considerable evolutionary selection; however, the detailed evolutionary history and functions of the various NADKs in plants are not clearly understood. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed a comparative genomic analysis that identified 74 NADK gene homologs from 24 species representing the eight major plant lineages within the supergroup Plantae: glaucophytes, rhodophytes, chlorophytes, bryophytes, lycophytes, gymnosperms, monocots and eudicots. Phylogenetic and structural analysis classified these NADK genes into four well-conserved subfamilies with considerable variety in the domain organization and gene structure among subfamily members. In addition to the typical NAD_kinase domain, additional domains, such as adenylate kinase, dual-specificity phosphatase, and protein tyrosine phosphatase catalytic domains, were found in subfamily II. Interestingly, NADKs in subfamily III exhibited low sequence similarity (∼30%) in the kinase domain within the subfamily and with the other subfamilies. These observations suggest that gene fusion and exon shuffling may have occurred after gene duplication, leading to specific domain organization seen in subfamilies II and III, respectively. Further analysis of the exon/intron structures showed that single intron loss and gain had occurred, yielding the diversified gene structures, during the process of structural evolution of NADK family genes. Finally, both available global microarray data analysis and qRT-RCR experiments revealed that the NADK genes in Arabidopsis and Oryza sativa show different expression patterns in different developmental stages and under several different abiotic/biotic stresses and hormone treatments, underscoring the functional diversity and functional divergence of the NADK family in plants. CONCLUSIONS: These findings will facilitate further studies of the NADK family and provide valuable information for functional validation of this family in plants.

In this work, the crystal growth of multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si) during the directional solidification process was studied using the cellular automaton method. The boundary heat transfer coefficient was adjusted to get a suitable temperature field and a high-quality mc-Si ingot. Under the conditions of top adiabatic and bottom constant heat flux, the shape of the crystal-melt interface changes from concave to convex with the decrease of the heat transfer coefficient on the side boundaries. In addition, the nuclei form at the bottom boundary while columnar crystals develop into silicon melt with amzigzag-faceted interface. The higher-energy silicon grains were merged into lower energy ones. In the end, the number of silicon grains decreases with the increase of crystal length.

Background/Aim: To evaluate efficacy of the AIxURO system, a deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) tool, in enhancing the accuracy and reliability of urine cytology for diagnosing upper urinary tract cancers. Materials and Methods: One hundred and eighty-five cytology samples of upper urine tract were collected and categorized according to The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology (TPS), yielding 168 negative for High-Grade Urothelial Carcinoma (NHGUC), 14 atypical urothelial cells (AUC), 2 suspicious for high-grade urothelial carcinoma (SHGUC), and 1 high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC). The AIxURO system, trained on annotated cytology images, was employed to analyze these samples. Independent assessments by a cytotechnologist and a cytopathologist were conducted to validate the initial AIxURO assessment. Results: AIxURO identified discrepancies in 37 of the 185 cases, resulting in a 20% discrepancy rate. The cytotechnologist achieved an accuracy of 85% for NHGUC and 21.4% for AUC, whereas the cytopathologist attained accuracies of 95% for NHGUC and 85.7% for AUC. The cytotechnologist exhibited overcall rates of roughly 15% and undercall rates of greater than 50%, while the cytopathologist showed profoundly lower miscall rates from both undercall and overcall. AIxURO significantly enhanced diagnostic accuracy and consistency, particularly in complex cases involving atypical cells. Conclusion: AIxURO can improve the accuracy and reliability of cytology diagnosis for upper urine tract urothelial carcinomas by providing precise detection on atypical urothelial cells and reducing subjectivity in assessments. The integration of AIxURO into clinical practice can significantly ameliorate diagnostic outcomes, highlighting the synergistic potential of AI technology and human expertise in cytology. Background/Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the outcome of colon cancer with bladder invasion after surgical intervention. Patients and Methods: Between 2011 and 2022, a total of 41 patients diagnosed with colon cancer and bladder invasion underwent surgical procedures at Taichung Veterans General Hospital. The impact of various risk factors on overall survival (OS) was assessed using Kaplan-Meier analyses and Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Among the enrolled patients, 21 underwent radical cystectomy, while 20 underwent partial cystectomy. Twelve had tumors located in the rectum, 19 in the sigmoid colon, and 10 in both the rectum and sigmoid colon. The median OS was 71.8 months in stage 2, 50.8 months in stage 3, and 11.2 months in stage 4 (p=0.061). Median OS was 71.8 months in patients with negative surgical margins and 10.5 months in those with positive surgical margins (p=0.003). In multivariate regression analysis, positive surgical margins [hazard ratio (HR)=3.64, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.28-10.34, p=0.015] and emergency operations (HR=4.57, 95%CI=1.34-15.55, p=0.015) significantly impacted OS. Conclusion: Complete resection of colon cancer with bladder invasion can yield excellent oncologic outcomes. The decision between partial and radical cystectomy should balance surgical margin clearance and the preservation of quality of life. Both surgical margin involvement and emergency operations are independent risk factors for OS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
