Rhodamine, a colorant prohibited in various consumer products due to its demonstrated carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic properties, necessitates the development of a straightforward, efficient, sensitive, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective analytical method. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in the pretreatment and determination techniques for rhodamine across diverse sample matrices since 2017. Sample preparation methods encompass both commonly used pretreatment techniques such as filtration, centrifugation, solvent extraction, and cloud point extraction, as well as innovative approaches including solid phase extraction, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction, magnetic solid phase extraction, and matrix solid phase dispersion. The analytical techniques encompass high performance liquid chromatography, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and sensor-based methods. H 2 S plays a crucial role in numerous physiological and pathological processes. In this project, a new fluorescent probe, SG-H 2 S, for the detection of H 2 S, was developed by introducing the recognition group 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether. The combination of rhodamine derivatives can produce both colorimetric reactions and fluorescence reactions. Compared with the current H 2 S probes, the main advantages of SG-H 2 S are its wide pH range (5-9), fast response (30 min), and high selectivity in competitive species (including biological mercaptan). The probe SG-H 2 S has low cytotoxicity and has been successfully applied to imaging in MCF-7 cells, HeLa cells, and BALB/c nude mice. Hydrogen polysulfide (H 2 S n , n≥2), as a kind of active sulfur species (RSS), has become a hot topic in RSS. It can regulate the biological activity of many proteins through S-sulfhydrylation of cysteine residues (protein Cys-SSH), and has a protective effect on cells. Although there have been some studies on hydrogen polysulfide, its production, degradation pathway and regulation mechanism still need further be researched. In presented study, an original lysosome-localized fluorescent probe for determining H 2 S n was developed utilizing rhodamine as the fluorogen. The probe used morpholine as the locating unit of lysosomes and chose 2-fluoro-5-nitrobenzoate as the recognizing group. Before adding H 2 S n , the proposed probe displayed a spironolactone structure and emitted very weak fluorescence. After adding H 2 S n , a conjugated xanthene was formed and the probe demonstrated green fluorescence. When the H 2 S n concentration was varied from 6.0×10 -7 mol·L -1 to 10.0×10 -5 mol·L -1 , the fluorescence intensity of the probe was linearly dependent on the H 2 S n concentration. And the detection limit was 1.5×10 -7 mol·L -1 . The presented probe owned a fast response speed, good selectivity, excellent sensitivity and broad pH work scope. The indiscriminate discharge of micropollutants (e.g., dyes, antibiotics, industrial additives, etc.) represents a significant risk to human health, and the removal of these substances from water bodies has become a prominent area of research within the field of environmental remediation. A simple hydrothermal-precipitation-photoreduction method was employed to synthesize novel Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts of AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag. The catalysts demonstrated remarkable degradation capabilities with regard to a range of micropollutants present in wastewater. Of the catalysts tested, 5AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag exhibited the highest degradation rates, reaching 98.58% for Rhodamine B, 86.82% for tetracycline hydrochloride, and 95.60% for 2-mercaptobenzothiazole within 60 min. In particular, the reaction kinetic rate of 5AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag towards Rhodamine B degradation (k 2  = 0.26278 L mg -1 ·min -1 ) is 9 times that of AgBr (k 2  = 0.02953 L mg -1 ·min -1 ) and 113 times that of CoWO 4 (k 2  = 0.00233 L mg -1 ·min -1 ), which serves to highlight the exceptional photocatalytic activity of the material. The experimental data and subsequent analysis indicated that the enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to two factors: firstly, the electron mediation by Ag nanoparticles leading to improved charge separation efficiency, and secondly, the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions between AgBr and CoWO 4 . The cyclic tests provided confirmation of the excellent stability and recyclability of the AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag photocatalysts. The performance of Electro-Fenton (EF) cathode materials is primarily assessed by H 2 O 2 yield and Fe 3+ reduction efficiency. This study explores the impact of pore structure in chitin-based porous carbon on EF cathode effectiveness. We fabricated mesoporous carbon (CPC-700-2) and microporous carbon (ZPC-700-3) using template and activation methods, retaining nitrogen from the precursors. CPC-700-2, with mesopores (3-5 nm), enhanced O 2 diffusion and oxygen reduction, producing up to 778 mg/L of H 2 O 2 in 90 min. ZPC-700-3, with a specific surface area of 1059.83 m 2 /g, facilitated electron transport and ion diffusion, achieving a Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ conversion rate of 79.9%. EF systems employing CPC-700-2 or ZPC-700-3 as the cathode exhibited superior degradation performance, achieving 99% degradation of Rhodamine B, efficient degradation, and noticeable decolorization. Hydrogels are indispensable for a variety of applications. Conventional biomaterial-based hydrogels, typically made from proteins or polysaccharides, often suffer from high costs, poor mechanical properties, and limited chemical functionality for modification. In this work, we present a novel hydrogel developed from modified castor oil, which is a renewable and cost-effective resource. Castor oil-based oligomer (CG) was synthesized using glycidyl methacrylate and triethylamine via ring-opening polymerization. The oligomer formed a gel only with Cu 2+ ions among the various systematically studied metal ions. Comprehensive density functional theory calculations, atoms in molecules analysis, and steady and dynamic shear rheology were conducted to investigate the metal-binding sites and metal-oligomer interactions as well as the self-healing and viscoelastic properties of the oil-based hydrogels. The hydrogel exhibited 94% self-healing efficiency and performed as a recyclable rhodamine B dye adsorbent (73-90%). This innovative approach offers a novel, cost-effective, and sustainable alternative to traditional hydrogels, paving the way for advanced applications.

Background: Although there are many uses for metal-organic framework (MOF) based nanocomposites, research shows that these materials have received a lot of interest in the field of water treatment, namely in the photodegradation of water contaminants, and disinfection of some pathogenic bacteria and fungi. This is brought on by excessive water pollution, a lack of available water, low-quality drinking water, and the emergence of persistent micro-pollutants in water bodies. Photocatalytic methods may be used to remove most water contaminants, and pathogenic microbes, and MOF is an excellent modifying and supporting material for photocatalytic degradation., Methods: This work involved the fabrication of a unique Cu-MOF based nanocomposite that was exposed to gamma radiation. The nanocomposite was subsequently employed for photocatalytic degradation and as an antimicrobial agent against certain harmful bacteria and fungi. The produced Cu-MOf nanocomposite was identified by XRD, SEM, and EDX. Growth curve analysis, UV lighting impact, and antibiofilm potential have been carried out to check antimicrobial potential. Additionally, the membrane leakage test was used to determine the mechanism of the antimicrobial action. In an experimental investigation of photocatalytic activity, a 50 mL aqueous solution including 10.0 ppm of Rhodamine B (RB) was used to solubilize 10 mg of Cu-MOF. It has been investigated how pH and starting concentration affect RB elimination by Cu-MOF. Ultimately, RB elimination mechanism and kinetic investigations have been carried out., Results: SEM images from the characterization techniques demonstrated the fact that the Cu-MOF was synthesized effectively and exhibited the Cu-MOF layers' flake-like form. Uneven clusters of rods make up each stratum. The primary peaks in the Cu-MOF's diffraction pattern were found at 2θ values of 8.75 ◦ , 14.83 ◦ , 17.75 ◦ , 21.04 ◦ , 22.17 ◦ , 23.31 ◦ , 25.41 ◦ , and 26.38 ◦ , according to the XRD data. After 135 min of UV irradiation, only 8% of RB had undergone photolytic destruction. On the other hand, the elimination resulting from adsorption during a 30-min period without light was around 16%. Conversely, after 135 min, Cu-MOF's photocatalytic breakdown of RB with UV light reached 81.3%. At pH 9.0, the greatest removal of RB at equilibrium was found, and when the amount of photocatalyst rose from 5 to 20 mg, the removal efficiency improved as well. The most sensitive organism to the synthesized Cu-MOF, according to antimicrobial data, was Candida albicans, with a documented MIC value of 62.5 µg mL -1 and antibacterial ZOI as 32.5 mm after 1000 ppm treatment. Cu-MOF also showed the same MIC (62.5 µg mL -1 ) values against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and 35.0 and 32.0 mm ZOI after 1000 ppm treatment, respectively. Ultimately, it was found that Cu-MOF (1000 µg/mL) after having undergone gamma irradiation (100.0 kGy) was more effective against S. aureus (42.5 mm ZOI) and E. coli (38.0 mm ZOI)., Conclusion: From the obtained results, the synthesized MOF nanocomposites had promising catalytic degradation of RB dye and high antimicrobial potential which encouraging their use in wastewater treatment against some pathogenic microbes and polluted dyes. Paper-based cultural relics often undergo acidification and deterioration during long-term preservation. Accurate detection of paper acidity is of great significance to assess aging status and extend the preservation lifetime of paper-based cultural relics. Rapid identification of the acidification degree and acid distribution across multiple regions of paper is essential. Inspired by fluorescent sensing technology, pH-sensitive cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) and rhodamine B (RB) fluorescent probes are synthesized and incorporated onto the nanofibers of a bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane to enable visual acidity detection of paper. Due to the complementary pH detection range of CdTe QDs and RB probes, the composite BC membrane exhibits a clear pH response across an acidic to neutral range (pH 3.0-7.5). Notably, the contrasting fluorescent colors of the two probes within the BC membrane allow for easy visualization of paper pH and acidity distribution with the naked eyes. A distinct color transition from red to green was observed on the fluorescent BC membrane when it is applied to a model paper with a gradient pH distribution. The feasibility of this method was verified by using the flat-headed pH electrode method. Additionally, common metal ions in most paper fillers, inks, pigments, as well as some sugars and amino acids showed minimal interference with the pH response of the composite BC membrane, highlighting its potential and broad applicability for visual acidity detection in paper-based cultural relics.

Conventional solid-based SERS substrates often face challenges with inconsistent sample distribution, while liquid-based SERS substrates are prone to aggregation and precipitation, resulting in irreproducible signals in both cases. In this study, we tackled this dilemma by designing and synthesizing raspberry-like plasmonic nanoaggregates that exhibit a high density of hotspots and are colloidally stable at the same time. In particular, the nanoaggregates consist of a core made of functionalized polystyrene (PS) microspheres, which act as a template for rapid self-assembly of Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles to form raspberry-like hierarchical nanoaggregates within 5 min of mixing. The optimized nanoaggregates can be used as reproducible and stable SERS substrates for a range of wastewater pollutants (e.g., rhodamine 6G (R6G) and malachite green (MG)) and nucleobases (e.g., adenine and uracil), with the detection limits as low as 1 × 10 -10 , 1 × 10 -16 , 3 × 10 -8 , and 3 × 10 -7 M, respectively. Additionally, the trace detection of adenine in clinical urine samples has been successfully demonstrated. Our modular assembly approach opens up new possibilities in SERS substrate design and advanced trace-chemical detection technologies.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with multiple symptoms, and its rapid screening is the research focus of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. In this study, gold@silver-porous silicon (Au@Ag-PSi) composite substrates were synthesized by electrochemical etching and in-situ reduction methods, which showed excellent sensitivity and accuracy in the detection of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and serum from SLE patients. SERS technology was combined with deep learning algorithms to model serum features using selected CNN, AlexNet, and RF models. 92 % accuracy was achieved in classifying SLE patients by CNN models, and the reliability of these models in accurately identifying sera was verified by ROC curve analysis. This study highlights the great potential of Au@Ag-PSi substrate in SERS detection and introduces a novel deep learning approach for SERS for accurate screening of SLE. For the sustainable advancement of industrial expansion that is environmentally conscious, harmful dyes must be removed from wastewater. Untreated effluents containing colors have the potential to harm the ecosystem and pose major health risks to people, animals, and aquatic life. Here, we have fabricated Ni or Fe modified with BaTiO 3 materials and effectively utilized them for Reactive Red 120 (RR 120) dye degradation under UV-A light. The synthesized materials were characterized, and their structural, and photo-physical properties were reported. Phase segregation was not present in the XRD pattern, as evidenced by the absence of secondary phase peaks linked to iron, nickel, or oxides. Low metal ion concentrations may be the cause of this, and the presence of those elements was confirmed by XPS measurements. The Raman spectra of the BaTiO 3 /Ni and BaTiO 3 /Fe samples show a widened peak at 500 cm -1 , which suggests that Ni or Fe are efficiently loaded onto the BaTiO 3 . RR 120 dye photodegradation under UV light conditions was effectively catalyzed by BaTiO 3 /Fe, as evidenced by its superior performance in the UV irradiation technique over both BaTiO 3 and BaTiO 3 /Ni. Compared to bare BaTiO 3 , both metal-modified materials efficiently degraded the RR 120 dye. Acidic pH facilitated the degradation process, which makes sense given that the heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction was the mechanism of degradation along with BaTiO 3 sensitization. High-acidity sewage can be dangerous and carcinogenic, and conventional biological treatment methods are not appropriate for managing it. In the current investigation, it may be used to treat color effluents with extremely low pH levels. We report a water-soluble fluorescence and colorimetric copper probe (LysoBC1); this system can also serve for lysosome labeling and for the dynamic tracking of Cu 2+ in living cells. The sensing mechanism takes advantage of the synergic action by the following three components: i) a lysosome targeting unit, ii) the spirolactam ring-opening for the selective copper chelation and iii) the metal-mediated hydrolysis of the rhodamine moiety for fluorescence enhancement. In aqueous environment the molecule acts as a fluorescent reversible pH sensor and as colorimetric probe for Cu 2+ at physiological pH; the hydrolysis of the copper targeting unit resulted in a 50-fold increase of the fluorescence intensity. The persistence and stability of refractory organic compounds such as dyes in water bodies cause serious toxicity to humans. The present study provides an in-depth investigation into the evolution law of electro-Fenton (EF) oxidation to in situ electrocoagulation (EC) process and its mechanism for highly efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants. A comprehensive evaluation of the energy efficiency by EC, EF (constant pH = 3) and electrocatalytic oxidation (EO) processes under the same research levels was conducted. The results showed that in the EF-EC mode, the removal efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) was enhanced by 33.41% compared to the EC system. Additionally, electrode consumption is 52.9% of the EF system, and current efficiency was improved by 272.98% compared to the EO system. Hydroxyl radical (·OH) and polynuclear species (Fe(b)) are the main species to remove refractory organics and intermediates. Unlike the synergistic effect of ·OH homogeneous oxidation and electrocoagulation in the EF-EC process, the ·OH produced in the EO process mainly undergoes heterogeneous oxidation at the electrode interface. The formed iron oxides were mainly Fe 2 O 3 and ɑ-FeOOH. Density functional theory calculations and liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer analysis indicated that the degradation of RhB mainly included deethylation, deamination, degradation, ring-opening and mineralization reactions. Having unique structural characteristics of biochar contributes great potential in photocatalysis, the preparation process complexity is still a great challenge for biochar-based photocatalysts. Based on this, this study proposes a new, simple, efficient, and flexible approach to preparing biochar-based photocatalysts by perylene diimide (GPC/PDI). The results showed that the hybridization between GPC and PDI was achieved by π-π stacking, which was reduced with increasing pyrolysis temperature, increased first and then decreased with increasing PDI content, and improved with enhanced solvent polarity. When the pyrolysis temperature was 400 °C, the PDI addition was 0.05 mg, and the reaction solvent was water, the degradation of 200 mg/L rhodamine B (RhB) by GPC 400 /PDI 0.5 was 94%, and the reaction rate constant was 10 and 4 times higher than GPC 400 and PDI, which were also effective in simulating actual wastewater treatment. The pursuit of clean energy generation and environmental preservation is of utmost importance for societal progress. However, couple clean energy production and pollution control is still a difficulty. In this study, a novel electrospun composite mat, with nano zero valent iron (Fe 0 , nZVI) encapsulated into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers was acted as a catalyst. The activation energy (E a ) for the hydrolysis of NaBH 4 to produce hydrogen is 22 kJ·mol -1 , hydrogen atom utilization efficiency (HGE) of NaBH 4 is 60.80%. Three kinds of organic dyes 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), methylene blue (MB), and Rhodamine B (RhB) were served as the model pollutant, to construct NaBH 4 -organic system for energy production and pollution reduction. The NaBH 4 -organic system demonstrates a collaborative capability to simultaneously remove organic pollutants and generate hydrogen, with a coupling equilibrium point between the two processes. The hydrogen generation rate (HGR) and HGE increased with the concentration of pollutants increased. The degradation of 4-NP, MB, and RhB followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with RhB degrading dosage 20 and 44 times higher than 4-NP and MB, respectively. H 2 and H· contributed to the organic degradation. nZVI directly participated in the formation H 2 and H·. PAN@Fe 0 possessed good recyclability and moderate cost. The degradation process adhered to the classical surface reaction controlled Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) model. The integration of synergistic production capacity and pollutant degradation aligns well with the principles of green chemistry and sustainable development. Wastewater purification has evolved into a global problem in the face of increasing scarcity of freshwater resources. Photocatalysis technology possesses prominent advantages in treating pollutants in water because of its low cost and mild reaction conditions, which provides an effective way to treat multiple pollutants and reduce membrane fouling. Herein, we combine photocatalysis technology with filtration technology via in situ reduction Bi 0 with Bi 2 SiO 5 strategy incorporating a carbonized wood filter to synthesize carbon/Bi 2 SiO 5 @Bi bi-functional composite. Thus, simultaneous filtration and photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and tetracycline were achieved. After filtrating for 30 min, the degradation rate of RhB and TC were 94.23 % and 81.39 %, respectively. Especially, the flux of RhB and TC were up to 2162.16 L m -2  h -1 and 1811.32 L m -2  h -1 . In addition, the composite filter also has good recyclability and reusability, after 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency of RhB remains at 91 %. This study utilized photocatalytic technology combined with membrane filtration technology to successfully solve the contradiction between catalytic efficiency and water flux, which realized rapid and dynamic removal of organic pollutants from water. The development of new efficient materials for the removal of water-soluble toxic organic dyes has been one of the focused research areas in the recent past. There is a strong demand for the new materials as most of the reported techniques/materials suffer from serious limitations. In this regard, a series of flexible chitosan-based task-specific polyurethane foams (PUCS-GP, PUCS-CA-GP, PUCS-TA-GP, and PUCS-GA-GP) associated with naturally available hydroxycarboxylic acids was developed. The basis for the preparation of these task-specific and functionalized PU foams is to possess amine groups for trapping the anionic dyes (example: Orange II denoted as OII) and carboxylic acid groups for attracting the cationic dyes (example: Rhodamine B denoted as RhB) under specified pH conditions. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to assess and improve various parametric conditions. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption kinetics closely agree with the pseudo-second-order model having a maximum sorption capacity of 38.3 mg/g at pH 3 for OII on PUCS-GP and 48.4 mg/g at pH 6 for RhB on PUCS-CA-GP. Furthermore, the adsorption process was described by isotherms, kinetic equations and thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS°). Notably, the regeneration of OII and RhB dyes from the exhausted PUCS-GP and PUCS-CA-GP materials was effectively accomplished. The recovered PUCS-GP shows >90 % OII and PUCS-CA-GP displays >70 % RhB removal efficiency even after twelve adsorption-desorption processes under mild conditions, demonstrating excellent recyclability/durability. This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe RBNE based on a hybrid rhodamine dye, which shows excellent optical capability for detecting and imaging ONOO - in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) mouse model. The probe RBNE undergoes hydrazine redox-process, and subsequently the spirocyclic structure's opening, resulting in a turn-on fluorescence emission with the presence of ONOO - , which exhibits several excellent features, including a significant Stokes shift of 108 nm, near-infrared emission at 668 nm, a lower detection limit of 56 nM, low cytotoxicity, and excellent imaging ability for ONOO - both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, a one-step solvothermal method was used to fabricate Fe 3+ doped BiOCl microflowers with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) in the presence of glacial acetic acid. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize the structural, morphological, and optical properties of the prepared samples. The presence of OVs was confirmed by low temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. The photocatalytic results show that Fe 3+ doped BiOCl photocatalysts have higher activity than the bare BiOCl, and 10% Fe 3+ /BiOCl exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance, the photocatalytic efficiency of this sample is 2.3 and 1.1 times higher than that of the blank BiOCl toward photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and rhodamine B (RhB), respectively. Furthermore, Fe 3+ doped BiOCl demonstrates excellent reusability. Based on the experimental observations, an enhancement mechanism for the photocatalytic activity of Fe 3+ doped BiOCl was reasonably elucidated.

ELISA has become the gold standard for detecting harmful substances due to its specific antibody recognition and sensitive enzyme-catalyzed reactions. In this study, multifunctional magnetic Prussian blue nanolabels (MPBNs) were synthesized using a simple gentle two-step method to achieve a dual-readout mode. The MPBNs provide a sensitive colorimetric signal by efficiently catalyzing the oxidation of TMB and exhibit prominent photocatalytic degradation activity towards Rhodamine B (RhB). Supplemented by the quenching effect of oxTMB, the fluorescence was enabled to serve as a sensitive second signal. The magnetic property of the labels facilitates the separation and enrichment of the target, thereby improving sensitivity. Utilizing the versatile MPBNs, the visual limit of detection (vLOD) for Staphylococcus aureus is as low as 100 CFU/mL, with a quantitative analysis range of 10 2 -10 8  CFU/mL. To achieve efficient dye degradation, we reported a visible light-driven biomass photo-enzyme coupled system, which was constructed by assembling g-C 3 N 4 during in situ culture and immobilizing laccase via metal-organic framework (MOF). Benefited from the network and porous structure of bacterial cellulose (BC), the g-C 3 N 4 could be stably interspersed, and MOF grew g-C 3 N 4 /BC to encapsulate laccase. BC improves the reusability of the system, while combined with MOF encapsulation, avoiding direct contact between photo- and enzyme- catalysts. Importantly, thanks to the existence of electron transfer from photocatalysis to enzyme, the photogenerated electron hole recombination within the photocatalyst reduced, improving catalyzed reaction efficiency. The degradation efficiency of the catalysis system within 10 min for methylene blue and rhodamine B could reach 100 % and 96.1 %, respectively, which could rapidly degrade dye and recycle for more than 10 times. This study developed mycelial biochar composites, BQH-AN and BQH-MV, with stable physicochemical properties and significantly improved adsorption capabilities through microbial modification. The results showed that the specific surface area and porosity of BQH-AN (3547.47 m 2 g -1 and 2.37 cm 3 g -1 ) and BQH-MV (3205.59 m 2 g -1 and 2.46 cm 3 g -1 ) were significantly higher than those of biochar BQH (2641.31 m 2 g -1 and 1.81 cm 3 g -1 ), which was produced without microbial treatment. In adsorption experiments using rhodamine B (RhB), tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), and Cr (VI), BQH-AN showed maximum adsorption capacities of 1450.79 mg g -1 for RhB, 1608.43 mg g -1 for TC, and 744.15 mg g -1 for Cr(VI). BQH-MV showed similarly strong performance, with 1329.85 mg g -1 for RhB, 1526.46 mg g -1 for TC, and 752.27 mg g -1 for Cr(VI). These values were not only higher than those of BQH but also outperformed most other biochar adsorbents. Additionally, after five reuse cycles, the pollutant removal efficiency of the mycelial biochar composites remained above 69%, demonstrating excellent regenerative ability. This study not only produced biochar with superior adsorption properties but also highlighted microbial modification as an effective way to enhance lignocellulosic biochar performance, paving the way for further biomass development.

The importance of real-time dose evaluation has increased for recent advanced radiotherapy. However, conventional methods for real-time dosimetry using gel dosimeters face challenges owing to the delayed dose response caused by the slow completion of radiation-induced chemical reactions. In this study, a novel technique called photoluminescence-detected pulse radiolysis (PLPR) was developed, and its potential to allow real-time dose measurements using nano-clay radio-fluorogenic gel (NC-RFG) dosimeters was investigated. PLPR is a time-resolved observation method, and enables time-resolved fluorescence measurement. NC-RFG dosimeters were prepared, typically consisting of 100 μM dihydrorhodamine 123 (DHR123) and 2.0 wt.% nano-clay, along with catalytic and dissolving additives. We successfully achieved time-resolved observation of the increase in fluorescence intensity upon irradiation of the dosimeter. Dose evaluation was possible at 1 s after irradiation. The dose-rate effect was not observed for the deoxygenated dosimeter, but was observed for the aerated dosimeter. Besides the dose-rate effect, linear dose responses were obtained for both conditions. Bacteria can evade antimicrobial therapy by hiding inside host cells such as macrophages. Here we examine the ability of PLGA nanoparticles to deliver antibiotics to intracellular bacteria, specifically focusing upon the impact of nanoparticle size. Different sized Rhodamine-B conjugated PLGA nanoparticles were synthesized and uptake examined in two macrophage cell lines, as well as different epithelial cells, to determine the optimal properties for macrophage uptake. These studies demonstrate macrophages display a consistent increase in uptake with increased PLGA nanoparticle diameter. In a bacteria-macrophage co-culture model, we then examined the efficacy of different sized antibiotic-loaded PLGA nanoparticles against intracellular infections with K. pneumoniae and S. aureus. Increasing the size of antibiotic-loaded PLGA nanoparticles significantly increased their potency against intracellular K. pneumoniae. However, this was not observed for S. aureus, potentially due to the observation these nanoparticles failed to access the compartment in which S. aureus reside. This work demonstrates for the first time that increasing the size of antibiotic-loaded PLGA nanoparticles can significantly enhance antimicrobial efficacy against K. pneumoniae intracellular macrophage infections. Voltage imaging is an important complement to traditional methods for probing cellular physiology, such as electrode-based patch clamp techniques. Unlike the related Ca 2+ imaging, voltage imaging provides a direct visualization of bioelectricity changes. We have been exploring the use of sulfonated silicon rhodamine dyes (Berkeley Red Sensor of Transmembrane potential, BeRST) for voltage imaging. In this study, we explore the effect of converting BeRST to diEt BeRST, by replacing the dimethyl aniline of BeRST with a diethyl aniline group. The new dye, diEt BeRST, has a voltage sensitivity of 40% Δ F / F per 100 mV, a 33% increase compared to the original BeRST dye, which has a sensitivity of 30% Δ F / F per 100 mV. In neurons, the cellular brightness of diEt BeRST is about 20% as bright as that of BeRST, which may be due to the lower solubility of diEt BeRST (300 μM) compared to that of BeRST (800 μM). Despite this lower cellular brightness, diEt BeRST is able to record spontaneous and evoked action potentials from multiple neurons simultaneously and in single trials. Far-red excitation and emission profiles enable diEt BeRST to be used alongside existing fluorescent indicators of cellular physiology, like Ca 2+ -sensitive Oregon Green BAPTA. In hippocampal neurons, simultaneous voltage and Ca 2+ imaging reveals neuronal spiking patterns and frequencies that cannot be resolved with traditional Ca 2+ imaging methods. This study represents a first step toward describing the structural features that define voltage sensitivity and brightness in silicon rhodamine-based BeRST indicators.

Enrofloxacin (ENR) residues in animal-derived food and water threaten human health. Simple, low-cost and on-site detection methods are urgently needed. Blue emitting carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and orange rhodamine B (RhB) were used as recognition and reference signals, respectively, to construct a ratiometric fluorescence sensor. After the addition of ENR, the color of the sensor changed from orange to blue because hydrogen bonding induced a considerable increase in CQDs fluorescence. Based on this mechanism, a simple and low cost on-site portable sensing platform was constructed, which integrated a stable UV light strip and a smartphone with voice-controlled phototaking function and an RGB app. The t-test results of spiked ENR recoveries for diluted milk, honey and drinking water revealed no significant differences between the ratiometric fluorescent sensor and portable sensing platform. A method for detecting methamphetamine (MET), ketamine (KET), and morphine (MOP) molecules is presented using a reusable substrate based on SERS. The SERS substrate was prepared by etching the Au/Ag alloy film to synthesize a nanoporous Au membrane (AuNPM). By optimizing the preparation conditions and using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as an analyte, the AuNPM exhibited good SERS performance with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 -9  mol L -1 . A competitive immunoassay category has been applied to the detection of MET, KET, and MOP. The MET, KET, and MOP antigens were functionalized on the surface of the AuNPM to specifically bind to the related drug antibodies. The Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and antibodies against MET, KET, and MOP were used as nanotags. The 4-MBA served as the reporting molecule and drug antibodies were used to bind to free drug molecules in the target solution. The mixture of nanotags and target solution was dropped onto the antigen-modified AuNPM (antigen/AuNPM), and the free nanotags bind to the antigen/AuNPM. By comparing the SERS intensity of 4-MBA with the presence or absence of drug molecules, the drugs were qualitatively and quantitatively identified. Through this category, the LODs for detecting MET, KET, and MOP were 0.1, 1, and 1 ng mL -1 , respectively. Green processes for synthesizing nanocomposites are a hot area of research today as traditional processes are expensive, inefficient, harmful for synthesizing organic and inorganic molecules, and unsuitable for large-scale operations. The present study investigates the capacity of green synthesized Calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO NPs) for efficiently removing Rhodamine B. Chemical reduction was replaced with Mulberry (Morus nigera) leaf extract as an environmentally friendly reaction mechanism. CaO NPs are characterized by various analytical techniques including EDX, BET, SEM, FTIR, TGA, Zeta Potential, Point of Zero Charge (PZC), and XRD. Maximum adsorption of Rhodamine B by CaO NPs is revealed at an initial concentration of Rhodamine B of 80 ppm, a temperature of 343 K, and contact time of 60 min, 0.4 g of adsorbent at a pH value of 7. Maximum removal of Rhodamine B by CaO NPs was found to be 98.2% which is promising with this small amount of adsorbent (0.4 g). Diverse Kinetic and adsorption isotherms are employed in this study to determine the requirement and significance of the adsorption process. Various adsorption isotherms such as Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R), and Langmuir models have been employed. Among the kinetic adsorption isotherms Elovich, Intraparticle kinetic model, pseudo 1st order, and pseudo 2nd order models were applied. The current study investigates the thorough understanding of the Rhodamine B adsorption process including the mechanism of adsorption using condition optimization, characterization, and model applications. The fluorescence high-throughput screening method is of importance for new antioxidant drug candidate discovery for the treatment of serious hepatorenal syndrome, which displayed an obvious upregulated peroxynitrite level. However, most of the current ONOO - probes possessed incomplete fluorescence quenching efficiency, which can result in non-negligible probe inherent fluorescence. Hence, we utilized the probe conjugated structure disruption strategy to construct hydrogenation phosphorus-substituted rhodamine ( H-PRh ) with "zero" probe inherent fluorescence character. Based on the precursor, a series of natural products were screened for identifying antioxidant drug candidates. Luteolin was screened out by activating the Sirt1-Nrf2-HO-1 signaling pathway to regulate the accumulation of ONOO - in the hepatorenal syndrome. Overall, the "zero" probe inherent fluorescence ONOO - sensor constructed here applies for a promising and versatile toolbox for illuminating the ONOO - -related pathological process in the hepatorenal syndrome. Besides, this strategy of constructing highly sensitive sensors could serve as a valuable reference for further fluorescent probes.

The design and development of fluorescent materials for detecting cancer-related enzymes are crucial for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Herein, we present a substituted rhodamine derivative for the chromogenic and fluorogenic detection of the cancer-relevant enzyme γ -glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT). Initially, the probe is non-chromic and non-emissive due to its spirolactam form, which hinders extensive electronic delocalization over broader pathway. However, selective enzymatic cleavage of the side-coupled group triggers spirolactam ring opening, resulting in electronic flow across the rhodamine skeleton, and reduces the band gap for low-energy electronic transitions. This transformation turns the reaction mixture from colorless to intense pink, with prominent UV and fluorescence bands. The sensor's selectivity was tested against various human enzymes, including urease, alkaline phosphatase, acetylcholinesterase, tyrosinase, and cyclooxygenase, and showed no response. Absorption and fluorescence titration analyses of the probe upon incremental addition of GGT into the probe solution revealed a consistent increase in both absorption and emission spectra, along with intensified pink coloration. The cellular toxicity of the receptor was evaluated using the MTT assay, and bioimaging analysis was performed on BHK-21 cells, which produced bright red fluorescence, demonstrating the probe's excellent cell penetration and digestion capabilities for intracellular analytical detection. Molecular docking results supported the fact that probe-4 made stable interactions with the GGT active site residues.

Hydrogen peroxide-based Fenton reaction can effectively degrade many small-molecule fluorescent dyes, leading to notable alterations in fluorescence signals. Additionally, the two-dimensional black phosphorus/platinum nanocomposite (BP/Pt) demonstrates exceptional catalase (CAT) characteristics. Based on these, a colorimetric-fluorescence dual-mode signal output pattern based on BP/Pt-Fenton reaction-rhodamine B tandem reaction system is reported. The physical adsorption property of the BP/Pt nanozymes was utilized to couple with antibodies, thus constructing a novel dual-mode nanozyme-based immuno-sensing assay (NISA). By using the migratory antibiotic enrofloxacin (ENR) as the target, the NISA provided highly sensitive detection with the detection limits of 0.058 ng/mL for colorimetric-mode and 0.025 ng/mL for fluorescence-mode and achieved accurate quantitative detection in environmental water and crucian carp samples. A novel rhodamine-based multi-ion fluorescent sensor, RGN, was designed and synthesized for the highly selective detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in ethanol and water systems, as well as trivalent cations (Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , and Cr 3+ ) in acetonitrile and water systems using a two-step Schiff base reaction method. Nuclear magnetic titration experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the sensor achieved the detection of the aforementioned metal ions through the fluorescence turn-on phenomenon induced by lactam ring-opening. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results showed decreased HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and increased dipole moments, indicating the effective coordination of the sensor with the corresponding metal ions to form more stable complexes, thereby achieving detection objectives. Furthermore, the fluorescence turn-on sensor RGN exhibited relatively low detection limits, with limits of detection (LOD) for Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Cr 3+ , and Hg 2+ being 10.20 nM, 14.66 nM, 58.78 nM, and 73.33 nM, respectively. Abnormal accumulation of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in organisms can lead to severe central nervous system and other diseases. Therefore, the monitoring and detection of Hg 2+ are of great significance for human health and environmental safety. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel far-red to NIR emission fluorescent probe (Rho-Hg) based on rhodamine derivative as the fluorophore and thiospirolactone as the recognition site for turn-on detecting of Hg 2+ in living cells and zebrafish. The probe Rho-Hg displayed superior sensitivity (detection limit = 17.5 nM), rapid response (<1 min), colorimetric change, high selectivity, and moderate pH stability. Leveraging this probe, we realized the real-time monitoring of Hg 2+ in real samples, living cells and zebrafish. By fostering zebrafish embryos and larvae in Hg 2+ -containing nutrient solution, we noticed that Hg 2+ was ingested into the zebrafish liver when zebrafish were grown up to 3 days old, and thus we successfully monitored the accumulation and changes of Hg 2+ during zebrafish growth and development. Attachment of a conjugate assembled from a novel fluorinated carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and rhodamine B onto dehydroabietylamine (DHA) or cyclododecylamine led to first-in-class conjugates of good cytotoxicity; thereby IC 50 values (from SRB assays; employed tumor cell lines A2780, A2780Cis, A549, HT29, MCF7, and non-malignant human fibroblasts CCD18Co) between 0.2 and 0.7 μM were found. Both conjugates showed similar cytotoxic activity but the dehydroabietylamine derived conjugate outperformed its cyclododecyl analog in terms of tumor cell/non-tumor cell selectivity. Contamination of water sources is a major environmental problem with far-reaching consequences for humanity. Organic substances are among the most widespread and persistent pollutants. Advanced oxidation processes, especially photocatalysis, have been considered as one of the most promising technologies for organic pollution control. In this study, hybrid photocatalysts based on N-doped TiO 2 , which exhibits activity in the visible region of the spectrum, and different content of octahedral Mo 6 bromide and iodide cluster complexes were synthesized to achieve the highest efficiency of the formed S-scheme photocatalytic system under white light irradiation. According to the data obtained, the resulting materials are nanoparticles with a diameter of ∼10 nm exhibiting absorption up to ∼550 nm. Photocatalytic studies were performed using model organic molecules - the more colored rhodamine B (RhB) and the less colored antibiotic tetracycline (TET). The most active samples showed high efficiencies against both pollutants with k eff ∼0.3-0.4 and 0.4-0.5 min -1 , respectively, while the activity of iodide complexes was ∼1.3 times higher than that of bromide complexes. This study effectively fabricated photocatalytic membranes (∼5 cm diameter) assembled by γ-AlOOH-PVA (BOP) decorated heterostructural ZIF-67/AgCl/Ag composites by combing seeded secondary growth and photoreduction methods. First, the ZIF-67-seeded BOP membrane was shaped in a petri dish, followed by submerging in a 2-methylimidazole ligand for secondary growth to obtain the BOP/ZIF-67 membrane. Next, AgCl/Ag was formulated on the membrane by dipping it in an AgNO 3 solution, followed by a photoreduction under visible LED light, resulting in a BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag membrane. The characterization showed that the membrane contained heterostructures of ZIF-67/AgCl/Ag anchored onto the BOP membrane. The BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag composite membranes exhibited enhanced light absorption and appeared the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag 0 , giving it a bandgap energy of ∼2.10 eV. Photodegradation under visible LED light irradiation showed that the BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag membrane efficiently removed tetracycline (TC) and Rhodamine B dye (RhB) with corresponding degradation efficiency of ∼99% (90 min) and ∼95% (140 min), giving reaction rates of ∼0.046 min -1 and 0.019 min -1 , respectively. The photocatalytic mechanism and photodegradation pathways analyses provided insights into the degradations of organic pollutants. Significantly, the designed BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag membrane quickly recovered from the solution and was of good durability. The field of environmental and water remediation faces a significant challenge in removing organic dyes from wastewater, particularly Rhodamine B (RhB), a stubborn dye used in various industries. Traditional treatment methods struggle with its resistance to decomposition, posing risks to water quality, human health, and aquatic life. This study demonstrates a novel approach to enhance photocatalytic efficiency for RhB degradation by constructing a MOF-5/g-C 3 N 4 composite through a facile mechanical grinding method, which is unprecedented. The composite addresses the limitations of g-C 3 N 4 , such as rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs, low electron transfer rates, and small surface area, by forming a heterojunction with MOF-5. The composite exhibits enhanced photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of RhB under sunlight, with a degradation of 91.5% achieved within 90 min. Optimization studies highlight the importance of pH and catalyst dosage in the degradation process. The reusability test shows consistent performance over five successive cycles, maintaining a degradation efficiency of over 90%. Total organic carbon (TOC) analyses confirm the mineralization of the dye solution to 82.05% after 90 min of irradiation, demonstrating the environmental benignity of the composite. Trapping experiments suggest the involvement of superoxide radicals, electrons, and holes in the photocatalytic mechanism. In this study, we present an innovative "click-to-release" strategy for the design of highly specific H 2 S n bioorthogonal probes that undergo a specific click reaction with H 2 S n and release fluorophores by a following rearrangement. A library of cyclooctyne derivatives was established and successfully demonstrated the availability of the release strategy. Then, a model probe CM-CT was synthesized, which can achieve effective fluorophore release (>80%) in the presence of a H 2 S n donor. To further validate the application of this class of probes, a new probe QN-RHO-CT based on Rhodamine 110 was developed. This probe showed good water solubility (>160 μM) and fast release kinetics and can achieve selective H 2 S n detection in living cells. We used this probe to study the process of H 2 S-mediated protein S-persulfidation and demonstrated that excess H 2 S would directly react with protein persulfides to generate H 2 S 2 and reduce the persulfides to thiols. Additionally, we elucidated the click-to-release mechanism in our design through a detailed mechanistic study, confirming the generation of the key intermediate α, β-unsaturated cyclooctanethione. This bioorthogonal click-to-release reaction provides a useful tool for investigating the function of H 2 S n and paves the way for biological studies on H 2 S n .

Improving the charge separation, charge transfer, and effective utilization is crucial in a photocatalysis system. Herein, we prepared a novel direct Z-scheme NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)@FeOCl (Ti-MOF@FeOCl) composite photocatalyst through a simple method. The prepared composite catalyst was utilized in the photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). The Ti-MOF@FeOCl (10FeTi-MOF) catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic performance and degraded 99.1 and 66% of RhB and CIP, respectively. However, the pure NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (Ti-MOF) and FeOCl catalysts achieved only 50 and 92% of RhB and 50 and 37% of CIP, respectively. The higher catalytic activities of the Ti-MOF@FeOCl composite catalyst could be due to the electronic structure improvements, photoinduced charge separations, and charge transfer abilities in the catalyst system. The composite catalysts have also enhanced adsorption and visible light-responsive properties, allowing for efficient degradation. Furthermore, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals, the reactive species trapping experiments, and Mott-Schottky (M - S) measurements revealed that the photogenerated superoxide radical (•O 2 -), hydroxyl radical (•OH), and holes (h+) played a vital role in the degradation process. The results also demonstrated that the Ti-MOF@FeOCl heterojunction composite catalysts could be a promising photo-Fenton catalyst system for the environmental remediation. Environmental implications The discharging of toxic contaminants such as organic dyes, antibiotics, and other emerging pollutants to the environment deteriorates the ecosystem. Specifically, the residues of organic pollutants recognized as a threat to ecosystem and a cause for carcinogenic effects. Among them, ciprofloxacin is one of antibiotics which has biological resistance, and metabolize partially in the human or animal bodies. It is also difficult to degrade ciprofloxacin completely with traditional treatment methods. Similarly, organic dyes are also toxic and a cause for carcinogenic effects. Visible-light-driven photocatalysis is an eco-friendly technology for wastewater treatment, where TiO 2 -based photocatalysts displayed outstanding performance in this regard. Dye sensitization is a promising approach for overcoming the common drawbacks of TiO 2 via improving its photocatalytic performance and extending its activity to visible light. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of the Thiophene-Hydrazinyl-Thiazole (THT) derivative as a novel organic dye sensitizer to be employed as a visible-light antenna for TiO 2 nanoparticles. The physicochemical characteristics of the as-synthesized TiO 2 -based nanoparticles are examined by different techniques, which revealed the successful fabrication of the proposed THT-TiO 2 heterojunction. The incorporation of THT molecules on the TiO 2 surface led to slight disorders and deformation in the crystal lattice of TiO 2 , a remarkable improvement of its absorption in the visible light as a perfect visible-light antenna in the whole visible region, and significant enhancement in the charge transfer. Rhodamine B (RhB) is used as an organic dye model to assess the photocatalytic efficiency of the as-fabricated THT-TiO 2 photocatalyst which achieved almost complete degradation (>95% in 150 min) with an observed rate constant (k obs ) of 0.0164 min -1 ; total organic carbon (TOC) measurements suggested ∼75% mineralization. THT-TiO 2 achieved 2.1-fold enhancement in photodegradation% and 4.1-fold enhancement in k obs compared to the bare TiO 2 . THT showed good activity under visible-light irradiation (RhB degradation% was >66% in 150 min and k obs  = 0.0085 min -1 ). The influence of the initial pH of the solution was investigated and pH 4 was the optimum pH value for suitable interaction between RhB and the surface of THT-TiO 2 . Radical quenching experiments were conducted to assess the crucial reactive species where the ∙ OH and O 2 .- were the most reactive species. THT-TiO 2 showed promising stability over three successive cycles. Polymersomes are synthetic vesicles with potential use in healthcare, chemical transformations in confined environment (nanofactories), and in the construction of artificial cells and organelles. In this framework, one of the most important features of such supramolecular structures is the permeability behavior allowing for selective control of mass exchange between the inner and outer compartments. The use of biological and synthetic nanopores in this regard is the most common strategy to impart permeability nevertheless, this typically requires fairly complex strategies to enable porosity. Yet, investigations concerning the permeability of polymer vesicles to different analytes still requires further exploration and, taking these considerations into account, we have detailed investigated the permeability behavior of a variety of polymersomes with regard to different analytes (water, protons, and rhodamine B) which were selected as models for solvents, ions, and small molecules. Polymersomes based on hydrophilic blocks of poly[N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide] (PHPMA) or PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)) linked to the non-responsive blocks poly[N-(4-isopropylphenylacetamide)ethyl methacrylate] (PPPhA) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or to the stimuli pH-responsive block poly[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDPA) have been investigated. Interestingly, the produced PEO-based vesicles are notably larger than the ones produced using PHPMA-containing block copolymers. The experimental results reveal that all the vesicles are inherently permeable to some extent with permeability behavior following exponential profiles. Nevertheless, polymersomes based on PMMA as the hydrophobic component were demonstrated to be the least permeable to the small molecule rhodamine B as well as to water. The synthetic vesicles based on the pH-responsive PDPA block exhibited restrictive and notably slow proton permeability as attributed to partial chain protonation upon acidification of the medium. The dye permeability was evidenced to be much slower than ion or solvent diffusion, and in the case of pH-responsive assemblies, it was demonstrated to also depend on the ionic strength of the environment. Quantitative microRNA (miRNA) detection is crucial for early breast cancer diagnosis and prognosis. However, quick and stable fluorescence sensing for miRNA identification is still challenging. This work developed a novel label-free detection method based on AuNPs etching for quantitatively detecting miRNA-155. A layer of AuNPs was grown on the surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) loaded with Rhodamine 6G (R6G) using seed-mediated growth, followed by probe attachment. In the presence of miRNA-155, the MSN@R6G@AuNP surface loses the protection of the attached probe, rendering AuNPs susceptible to etching by hydrochloric acid. This results in a significant fluorescent signal being released in the free space. The encapsulation with AuNPs effectively reduces signal leakage, while the rapid etching process shortens detection time. This strategy enables sensitive and fast detection with a detection range of 100 fM to 100 nM, a detection limit of 2.18 fM, and a detection time of 30 min. The recovery rate in normal human serum ranges from 99.02 % to 106.34 %. Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) was synthesized following hot injection method and the process was optimized by varying temperature conditions. Four samples at different temperatures viz., 200, 250, 300 and 350 °C were prepared and analyzed using different characterization techniques. Based on the correlation between XRD, Raman and XPS, we conclude that the formation of ZnS and SnS 2 occurs at 350 °C but at 200 °C there is no breakdown of the complex as per XRD. According to Raman and XPS analysis, as the temperature rises, the bonds between the metals become weaker, which is visibly seen in Raman and XPS due to the minor peaks of copper sulfide. Scanning electron microscopic analysis confirmed nanometric particles which increase in size with temperature. The photocatalytic evaluation showed that CZTS synthesized at 200 °C performed efficiently in the removal of the two colorants, methylene blue and Rhodamine 6G, achieving 92.80% and 90.65%, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies decreased at higher temperatures due to bigger sized CZTS particles as confirmed by SEM results. The synthesis and characterization of a novel trinuclear rhodamine-Gd(III) complex, along with two analogous mononuclear rhodamine-Gd(III) complexes, are reported. All complexes displayed good selectivity in a human glioma cell line (T98G) when compared to a glial cell line (SVG p12), with low cytotoxicities. Superior tumor cell uptake for these Gd(III) complexes was observed at lower incubation concentrations compared to previously-reported delocalized lipophilic cations such as a rhodamine-lanthanoid(III) probe and Gd(III)-arylphosphonium complexes, with ca. 150 % and 250 % increases in Gd uptake, respectively., (© 2024 The Author(s). The present research utilizes a sol-gel approach to create a CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite (NC) and explored several analytical methods to evaluate physical, chemical and optical based characteristics via XRD, FTIR, UV-vis, SEM/EDS and XPS for the prepared pure CoFe 2 O 4 , g-C 3 N 4 , and CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 NC. The XRD results show that the prepared g-C 3 N 4 , CoFe 2 O 4 , exhibits hexagonal and cubic phases respectively, whereas the g-C 3 N 4 /CoFe 2 O 4 NC exhibit mixing of two phases. The energy band gaps for pure g-C 3 N 4 , CoFe 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 /CoFe 2 O 4 NC values are viz., 2.75, 1.3, and 2.4 eV. As photocatalysts, synthesized materials were utilized for the decomposition of Rhodamine-B (RhB) dye. Finally, the CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 NC showed good performance of photocatalysis for RhB dye disintegration under the stimulus of visible light. According to the induced visible light, the rate at which the photocatalytic degradation occurs for the CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 NC was found to be 57% in 120 min and this is greater when compared with pure catalysts like CoFe 2 O 4 (28%) and g-C 3 N 4 (10%). In the present report, a novel dual pH-O 2 sensor based on covalent conjugate of rhodamine 6G and cyclometalated iridium complex with poly(vinylpyrrolidone-block-vinyltetrazole) copolymer is reported. In model physiological solutions the sensor chromophores display independent phosphorescent and fluorescent lifetime responses onto variations in oxygen concentration and pH, respectively. Colocalization studies on Chinese hamster ovary cells demonstrate the preferential localization in endosomes and lysosomes. The fluorescent lifetime imaging microscopy-phosphorescent lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM-PLIM) experiments show that the phosphorescent O 2 sensor provides unambiguous information onto hypoxia versus normoxia cell status as well as semi-quantitative data on the oxygen concentration in cells in between these two states. However, the results of FLIM measurements indicate that dynamic lifetime interval of the sensor (≈0.5 ns between pH values 5.0 and 8.0) is insufficient even for qualitative estimation of pH in living cells because half-width of lifetime distribution in the studied samples is higher than the sensor dynamic interval. Nevertheless, the variations in rhodamine emission intensity are much higher and allow rough discrimination of acidic and neutral cell conditions. The accumulation of micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) in ecosystems poses tremendous environmental risks for terrestrial and aquatic organisms. Designing rapid, field-deployable, and sensitive devices for assessing the potential risks of MNPs pollution is critical. However, current techniques for MNPs detection have limited effectiveness. Here, we design a wireless portable device that allows rapid, sensitive, and on-site detection of MNPs, followed by remote data processing via machine learning algorithms for quantitative fluorescence imaging. We utilized a supramolecular labeling strategy, employing luminescent metal-phenolic networks composed of zirconium ions, tannic acid, and rhodamine B, to efficiently label various sizes of MNPs (e.g., 50 nm-10 μm). Results showed that our device can quantify MNPs as low as 330 microplastics and 3.08 × 10 6 nanoplastics in less than 20 min. We demonstrated the applicability of the device to real-world samples through determination of MNPs released from plastic cups after hot water and flow induction and nanoplastics in tap water. Moreover, the device is user-friendly and operative by untrained personnel to conduct data processing on the APP remotely. The analytical platform integrating quantitative imaging, customized data processing, decision tree model, and low-cost analysis ($0.015 per assay) has great potential for high-throughput screening of MNPs in agrifood and environmental systems.

Introduction: Oligonucleotide (ON) therapy is a promising treatment for a wide range of complex genetic disorders, but inefficient intracellular ON delivery has hindered clinical translation. Hollow silica nanoparticles (HSN) hold potential as effective ON delivery vehicles since ON can be encapsulated in the hollow core in situ where they are protected from degradation by eg nucleases. However, HSN must be modified to allow degradation and subsequent (sub)cellular ON release. In this report, we investigated the use of ion and fluorescent dye co-doping in the HSN silica matrix to enable HSN degradability and in vitro visualization., Methods: HSN were core encapsulated with ON, doped with Ca 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Se 2+ and Sr 2+ ions and co-condensed with rhodamine b isothiocyanate (RITC) by a modified reverse microemulsion method. HSN were physiochemically characterized and their biological activity such as uptake and toxicity were evaluated in mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs)., Results: We successfully doped HSN with RITC and Ca 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ and Sr 2+ ions. We observed that doping HSN with Ca 2+ and Sr 2+ enhanced RITC incorporation while ON encapsulation in HSN increased Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ doping efficiency. Moreover, our dual-doped HSN demonstrated controlled ON release in the presence of intracellular mimicking levels of glutathione (GSH) and limited release in the absence of GSH over 14 days. HSN were biocompatible in hMSCs up to 300 µg/mL except for Cu 2+ doped HSNs which were cytotoxic even at ~10 µg/mL. This study developed a novel process named sulfidated zero-valent iron/peroxymonosulfate/visible light irradiation (S-mZVI/PMS/vis) for enhanced organic pollutant degradation. The S-mZVI/PMS/vis process exhibited remarkable catalytic activity, achieving a 99.6% rhodamine B (RhB) removal within 10 min. The degradation rate constant of RhB by the S-mZVI/PMS/vis process was found to be 6.49 and 79.84 times higher than that by the S-mZVI/PMS and PMS/vis processes, respectively. Furthermore, the S-mZVI/PMS/vis process worked efficiently across a wide pH range (3.0-9.0), and the result of five-cycle experiments demonstrated the excellent reusability and stability of S-mZVI. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis indicated that ·O 2 - , 1 O 2 , and h +  significantly contributed to the degradation of RhB through the S-mZVI/PMS/vis process. The visible light irradiation increased the Fe 2+ concentration, improved the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle, and consequently enhanced the PMS decomposition, reactive species production, and RhB degradation. Traditional fluorescence intensity-based probes face challenges in accurately measuring mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) due to intramolecular fluorescence quenching. In this work, we introduce a novel approach by incorporating quenching moieties within the zwitterionic probe to eliminate self-quenching interference, thus, enabling real-time and precise visualization of reversible MMP changes. We synthesized a zwitterionic fluorescent probe consisting of silicon-rhodamine (SiR) that was hydroxyl-substituted on the bay position of perylene diimides (PDIs) connected via a polyethylene glycol (PEG) linker. The lipophilic cationic SiR facilitates the entry of the PDI into the mitochondria, where the alkaline pH environment (pH = 8.0) ionizes the hydroxyl to a negatively charged species, affecting the quenching efficiency of SiR depending on the distance between the PDI and SiR moieties regulated by the MMP. The rigid aromatic ring of the PDI and strong hydrophobic interactions with the lipid bilayer, along with the inhibitory effect of the negatively charged hydroxyl on internalization, ensure the retention of PDI within the mitochondria. As the MMP decreases, SiR shifts outward, reducing quenching by phenolic anions and restoring fluorescence. Conversely, as the MMP increases, SiR moves inward, intensifying quenching by phenolic ions and reducing fluorescence, enabling reversible visualization monitoring of the MMP. This strategy overcomes the limitations of traditional intensity-based probes, providing a new avenue for reversible monitoring of the MMP.
