Relational writing offers an alternative approach to traditional writing and is a process to explore intimacy in togetherness. In this paper, we offer a bouquet of stories that we, eight scholars, have written collectively to share our memories of researching and writing together over the past three years. Ours was not a linear journey; it evolved organically, like a rhizome. With our intention to relate, intimacy followed. We contend that this intimacy can help us withstand the pressures of the neoliberal academy, foster care and, most importantly, flourish like a garden. We find that the journey of relational writing nurtures new ideas and possibilities, it is not just transactional, but cultivated. This paper, therefore, contributes to emergent theorising on collective writing and writing differently by advancing the concept, practice and experience of relational writing across aesthetic, moral and political dimensions. Drawing upon the DeleuzoGuattarian metaphor of the 'rhizome', this paper proposes a literature and evidence review methodology that complements data collection, analysis and reporting methods appropriate to new materialist and post-human ontologies. Rhizomatic review replicates the branching and multiplying, subterranean and subversive, endless flows of affect that produce the social world in these ontologies of becoming and difference. The paper situates rhizomatic review in relation to Deleuze and Guattari's understanding of 'minor science': an approach that rather than attempting to represent the social world 'follows the action'. Rhizomatic review is open-ended, avoids setting inclusion or exclusion criteria, follows links that open up during the research process, explores a literature or evidence across disciplines, and engages in multiple iterations of searching and synthesis. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is a valuable sciophyte crop used as a spice or fresh herb in culinary dishes and for treating medical issues such as osteoarthritis, neurological diseases, vomiting, and asthma. The demand for ginger in the United States is remarkably high; it is produced commercially and exclusively in Hawaii but can only meet ~20% of US demand. Light for ginger growth may be more important than is often assumed, but the roles of light in ginger growth and rhizome yield are not fully understood. We hypothesized that artificial shade would produce the highest yielding ginger compared with no shade. This study evaluated the impact of different shading suited for ginger growth and rhizome yield of different cultivars grown in a high tunnel. There were three levels (0%, 22%, and 40%) of shade using RCBD design. We analyzed the overall yield (weight) of ginger and the specific yield (weight) of different rhizome parts (biological root, edible root, and seed ginger) per plant in addition to plant growth data. Data were analyzed for 2018 and 2019, and shade conditions influenced ginger growth and yield. There was no significant difference between shade conditions or cultivars, but general trends found that data differed between the two growing seasons. In 2018, Chinese White and Hawaii Yellow produced a better (higher) yield under 0% and 40% shade. However, in 2019, Chinese White and Hawaii Yellow produced the highest total yield under 22% shade, but Bubba Blue produced the highest overall yield at 0% shade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore issues of safety and security at school the research reported here investigated the way a sense of security was created in school, how security was linked to different locations and situations, and the influences that acted on pupils' sense of security. Pupils in year 1 in Sweden took photographs associated with insecurity and security, and these were used as starting points for small-group discussions. Analysis makes use of Deleuze and Guattari's (1987) theoretical concepts including assemblage, affect, rhizome and desire. This article provides an insight into the vulnerability of little bodies, in which materiality and thing-power played a large part. Security was created in assemblages, in the interplay between locations, things and pupils. It varied between different points in time and also increased or decreased depending on the risks the pupils dared expose themselves to. Happiness, freedom, self-assertiveness, status, and self-preservation were examples of desires arising in the assemblage and influencing the sense of security. The article provides examples of how the sense of security may be affected and follows a molecular rhizome of understanding the appearance of emotions of security in school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cynanchum acutum L. (Asclepiadaceae) is a perennial vine weed widespread in the Mediterranean region. In Israel, it is native to areas such as the Golan Heights, Galilee, and the northern Negev. Recently, its range has expanded to the Arava Valley in the southern part of Israel. In this study, we investigate the biology and phenology of C. acutum plants originating from both native and invasive populations. To achieve this, we utilized rhizomes from the invasive area in the southern region characterized by a hyper-arid desert climate (Yahel), and from the northern region characterized by a temperate climate (Gvat). Additionally, we examine chemical-based weed management approaches for controlling C. acutum. Rhizomes collected from the northern region showed higher emergence rates at temperatures between 15-30°C, whereas at 35°C, rhizomes from the southern region exhibited a higher emergence rate. Phenology experiments conducted simultaneously at southern and northern locations revealed that plants from the northern location flowered first at both sites. However, flowering initiation occurred ~20 days earlier on average when plants from both populations were grown at the southern site. Pre-emergence herbicide treatments using indaziflam and pyroxasulfone were effective in inhibiting C. acutum root formation. According to the percentage of emergence, pendimethalin showed higher emergence (93% and 100%) in comparison to indaziflam (10% and 93%) and pyroxasulfone (72% and 70%) (2020 and 2021, respectively). Treatments including the herbicide fluroxypyr, as well as the treatment of glyphosate + saflufenacil + surfactant were highly effective in controlling C. acutum plants. These results offer valuable insights into effective weed management strategies for addressing C. acutum infestations. Moreover, our findings underscore the remarkable plasticity of this species and shed light on how populations originating from diverse habitats may have adapted to distinct environmental conditions. This study investigated the structural composition and antioxidant properties of pectic polysaccharides extracted from Rohdea japonica (Thunb.) Roth. Pectins, which belong to a complex category of acidic polysaccharides, possess a wide range of biological effects stemming from their distinctive structural domains. The polysaccharides were extracted using water, and were subsequently purified through ion exchange and gel permeation chromatography. In order to elucidate their structural features, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance techniques were applied. Two specific polysaccharides, WRJP-A2a and WRJP-A3b, with molecular weights of 42.7 kDa and 64.1 kDa, respectively, were identified to contain varying proportions of homogalacturonan, rhamnogalacturonan I, and rhamnogalacturonan II domains. Regarding antioxidant capacity, WRJP-A3b exhibited superior scavenging capabilities against DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl radicals, potentially attributed to its higher galacturonic acid content and abundance of homogalacturonan domains. These results enhance our comprehension of the structure–activity interplay of pectic polysaccharides sourced from Rohdea japonica (Thunb.) Recent investigations have revealed the coordination and trade-offs between above- and belowground traits in structuring functional strategies of plant communities, but none of these have addressed ferns, a diverse plant lineage in tropical forests. We investigated terrestrial ferns from the perspective of how below- and aboveground traits are coordinated with functional responses to forest edges, which represent a significant part of the world's forest cover. Specifically, we examined differences in functional strategies between forest edges and forest interior as well as traits associated with species dominance. Fern richness and abundance were sampled in 24 edge plots and 44 interior plots within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We obtained data for five leaf traits and three rhizome traits. Ferns did not express any functional coordination between above- and belowground traits. At the edge, ferns did not display functional homogenization. In both the interior and at the edge, ferns exhibited multiple trait covariations across a broad spectrum of plant sizes and leaf numbers, associated with rhizome type and the presence of leaf trichomes and stolons. There were no cohesive functional groups of generalists or of exclusive species of forest edges and the forest interior. Fern species dominance was related to the species-specific number of leaves and the presence of stolons. We conclude that below- and aboveground traits did neither respond in conjunction nor as a functional response to edge effects. The rhizome of Zingiber officinale, stands as a time-honored component deeply rooted in the realms of traditional medicine, boasting a history spanning centuries. This expansive review endeavors to intricately dissect the multifaceted dimensions of Zingiber officinale, delving into its botanical intricacies, phytochemical constituents, and medicinal attributes. Our overarching goal is to cast a comprehensive light on the manifold applications of Zingiber officinale within the domains of health and wellness. Methodically integrate the wealth of existing knowledge surrounding the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties inherent in ginger. By doing so, we seek to unravel the potential therapeutic efficacy of ginger in the management of an array of health conditions. To achieve this objective, an exhaustive literature review was conducted, encompassing detailed examinations of botanical descriptors, comprehensive phytochemical analyses, and critical evaluations of clinical studies. Through this comprehensive exploration, we present a holistic and nuanced overview of Zingiber officinale. Our findings resonate with the versatility of ginger, underscoring its efficacy in mitigating not only nausea and digestive issues but also in addressing the complexities of inflammatory diseases. The culmination of our findings contributes significantly to a richer and more profound understanding of the versatile applications of ginger, positioning it as a compelling and promising subject for both further scientific inquiry and practical utilization. Overuse of artificial chemical fertilizers could be detrimental to the environment. Utilizing beneficial microorganisms as biofertilizers is a sustainable technique that promotes soil health, crop yield, and ecosystem preservation. Curcuma longa L. is utilized as a medication since it has its antibacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-tumor characteristics, which reduce inflammation and hasten wound healing. The effect of E. cloacae strain MSR1, which is common in the roots of alfalfa grown in the Al-Ahsaa region, on C. longa plants is being investigated. C. longa rhizomes were planted under greenhouse conditions after being submerged in a solution of E. cloacae strain MSR1 (OD 500) or water treatment as a control for 12 hours. After 240 days of growing, ten randomly selected plants from each treatment were collected, and the vegetative growth and yield metrics were assessed. To investigate how E. cloacae influences C. longa production and chemical composition (photosynthetic pigment, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and curcuminoid), measurements were conducted as well as genes diketide-CoA and curcumin synthases genes. Our research showed that C. longa's growth and yield were favorably impacted by E. cloacae. Significant increases in the related plants' chlorophyll a,b, carotenoid, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels were likewise a reflection of the enhanced effects shown in the growth and yield parameters. Treatment with E. cloacae raised the curcuminoid's three sub-components' compositions to varying degrees: bisdemethoxycurcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and curcumin. Comparing E. cloacae treated plants to the control, high expression levels of the genes diketide-CoA and curcumin synthase-1, -2, and 3 were also found. The treatment of E. cloacae is a good biostimulant candidate for boosting growth and yield as well as raising the medicinal qualities of C. longa, according to the overall results. This work presents an efficient one-step procedure for in vitro propagation in Angelica glauca using rhizome buds and production of secondary metabolites. A maximum of 94% of buds were established in vitro on medium supplemented with 0.3 mg/L Benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.1 mg/L Gibberellic acid (GA3). After the fifth sub-culture, the proliferating shoots from the rhizome buds displayed the maximum proliferation (1:15), rooted on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA and 0.2 mg/L α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). After being transferred to pots with soil:cocopeat (1:1) for hardening, shoots with enlarged rhizomes demonstrated 60% survival after a month in the polyhouse. For secondary metabolite production, callus was induced from in vivo roots on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L Kinetin (Kin) and 2.0 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) under dark incubation and after 1 year its suspension culture showed the existence of 206 compounds. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis results revealed that extracts predominantly contain compounds from different classes such as esters, ethers, and N-heterocyclic pyrrolo pyridazine, fatty acids and mono and sesquiterpenes with varying concentrations. On elicitation with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) the callus cultures depicted varying concentration of monoterpene such as d-limonene, trans and cis-ligustilide, a marker compound of A. glauca essential oil, fatty acids and ethers. Sucrose treatment at 1, 3 and 5% revealed the presence of various unsaturated fatty acids, hydrocarbon, ethers, sesquiterpenes β-farnesene, α-copaene, and carotenoid rhodopin. Addition of growth regulators (2,4-D and Kin) revealed the presence of furfural and its derivatives, benzoic acids and esters.Key message: This study reports a one-step in vitro propagation methodology from rhizome buds of A. glauca Edgew., and synthesis of bioactive compounds of pharmaceutical importance from root callus cell suspension cultures. This paper analyzes the concepts of time and consciousness in three works by Jorge Luis Borges. In «The Garden of Forking Paths», the phenomenon of a rhizomorphic labyrinth produces a limitless net of times, forking, converging and parallel to each other. It supposes a huge series of events, developing and coming out simultaneously as a multiplicity of scenarios. Since such kind of a labyrinth has no primary vector, its every point can generally connect to any other point. That is why the inner novel, a world of pure fiction inserted by the author into the main story can interfere with the life of its main characters. «A New Refutation of Time» is at first glance supposed to prove in all possible ways the inexistence of time at the level of metaphysics. However, as a human being, Borges declares himself unable to oppose and resist its implacable course. The third work considered here, «The Rose of Paracelsus», is distant from «The garden of forking paths» as regards the time of publication; nonetheless, it helps to establish unexpected intertextual relations, while the representation of facts as a myth is among its highlights. The reality of creation and destruction constantly present in the work of Borges is described and interpreted as a series of events that occur in the course of time; hence the tale «The South» is also discussed from this point of view. Generally, the works examined emphasize the complexity of time as a multifaceted phenomenon and make the reader think about how unique every moment is.

A network of 15 Surface Elevation Tables (SETs) at North Inlet estuary, South Carolina, has been monitored on annual or monthly time scales beginning from 1990 to 1996 and continuing through 2022. Of 73 time series in control plots, 12 had elevation gains equal to or exceeding the local rate of sea-level rise (SLR, 0.34 cm/year). Rising marsh elevation in North Inlet is dominated by organic production and, we hypothesize, is proportional to net ecosystem production. The rate of elevation gain was 0.47 cm/year in plots experimentally fertilized for 10 years with N&P compared to nearby control plots that have gained 0.1 cm/year in 26 years. The excess gains and losses of elevation in fertilized plots were accounted for by changes in belowground biomass and turnover. This is supported by bioassay experiments in marsh organs where at age 2 the belowground biomass of fertilized S. alterniflora plants was increasing by 1,994 g m−2 year−1, which added a growth premium of 2.4 cm/year to elevation gain. This was contrasted with the net belowground growth of 746 g m−2 year−1 in controls, which can add 0.89 cm/year to elevation. Root biomass density was greater in the fertilized bioassay treatments than in controls, plateauing at about 1,374 g m−2 and 472 g m−2, respectively. Growth of belowground biomass was dominated by rhizomes, which grew to 3,648 g m−2 in the fertilized treatments after 3 years and 1,439 g m−2 in the control treatments after 5 years. Depositional wetlands are limited by an exogenous supply of mineral sediment, whereas marshes like North Inlet could be classified as autonomous because they depend on in situ organic production to maintain elevation. Abstract Traditional agriculture is becoming increasingly not adapted to global climate change. Compared with annual rice, perennial rice has strong environmental adaptation and needs fewer natural resources and labor inputs. Rhizome, a kind of underground stem for rice to achieve perenniallity, can grow underground horizontally and then bend upward, developing into aerial stems. The temperature has a great influence on plant development. To date, the effect of temperature on rhizome development is still unknown. Fine temperature treatment of Oryza longistaminata (OL) proved that compared with higher temperatures (28–30 ℃), lower temperature (17–19 ℃) could promote the sprouting of axillary buds and enhance negative gravitropism of branches, resulting in shorter rhizomes. The upward growth of branches was earlier at low temperature than that at high temperature, leading to a high frequency of shorter rhizomes and smaller branch angles. Comparative transcriptome showed that plant hormones played an essential role in the response of OL to temperature. The expressions of ARF17, ARF25 and FucT were up-regulated at low temperature, resulting in prospectively asymmetric auxin distribution, which subsequently induced asymmetric expression of IAA20 and WOX11 between the upper and lower side of the rhizome, further leading to upward growth of the rhizome. Cytokinin and auxin are phytohormones that can promote and inhibit bud outgrowth, respectively. The auxin biosynthesis gene YUCCA1 and cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase gene CKX4 and CKX9 were up-regulated, while cytokinin biosynthesis gene IPT4 was down-regulated at high temperature. Moreover, the D3 and D14 in strigolactones pathways, negatively regulating bud outgrowth, were up-regulated at high temperature. These results indicated that cytokinin, auxins, and strigolactones jointly control bud outgrowth at different temperatures. Our research revealed that the outgrowth of axillary bud and the upward growth of OL rhizome were earlier at lower temperature, providing clues for understanding the rhizome growth habit under different temperatures, which would be helpful for cultivating perennial rice.

A new sesquiterpenoid, ar-tumerdiol (1) as well as ar-tumerone (2), α-tumerone (3), β-tumerone (4), 4-(1′ ,5′ -dimethyl-3′-oxo-4′-hexenyl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one (5), turmeronol (6), curcumin (7), and hexahydrocurcumin (8), were isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae). Diverse forms of protest in contemporary Iraq have not altered the country's political system and in some respects have reinforced it. This paper argues that the existing literature has not fully explained this protest weakness, due in part to a division between an agency-focused protest literature emphasising discourse, symbolic politics, and the micro-politics of protests, where less attention has been paid to the material and structural elements; and a literature focused on the political system which has typically adopted more macro and structural models. By contrast, this paper uses concepts from Deleuze and Guattari to explore empirical case studies of the encounter between protests and political power in Iraq. It finds the notion of social assemblage useful for drawing the expressive and the material, the micro and the macro, back together on the same ontological plane. Deleuze and Guattari's distinction between the behaviours of rhizomatic (decentred) and arborescent (hierarchic) structures can also clarify a key source of protest weakness in Iraq as the rhizomatic tendencies of the country's political system. This refers primarily to the tendency for destabilisations of the system engendered by protests to function as a mechanism for the expansion of its political power over new social territory. Leymus chinensis is a perennial rhizomatous clone plant. It exhibits strong rhizomatous tillering and clonal growth through asexual reproduction. The root system is interdependent with aboveground growth and root growth can regulate aboveground growth and photosynthesis. Melatonin has been shown to regulate root growth and promote photosynthesis. However, it remains unclear whether melatonin affects aboveground growth and photosynthesis by regulating rhizome growth. To address this gap, we studied nine Leymus chinensis from different geographical locations, all grown under the same conditions. We selected two materials with strong (LC19) and weak (LC2) rhizome growth abilities from nine materials and treated them with exogenous melatonin. We found there were significant positive correlations between stem length, plant height, leaf number and rhizome traits. Additionally, rhizome traits showed significant positive correlations with photosynthetic indices and chlorophyll content. Specifically, for LC2, treatment with 200 μmol/L melatonin significantly increased root length, the number of extravaginal ramets and rhizome clonal growth rate by 88.72%, 43.75% and 43.70%, respectively, resulting in significant increases in aboveground traits. Similarly, for LC19, 200 μmol/L melatonin treatment led to significant increases of 74.66%, 23.02%, 62.71% and 62.72% in four traits, respectively, along with aboveground trait improvements. Furthermore, around 300 μmol/L melatonin treatment promoted photosynthetic efficiency in LC2, while around 100 μmol/L melatonin treatment had the same effect in LC19. In conclusion, our study highlights the relationship between rhizome growth ability, aboveground growth and photosynthesis in Leymus chinensis. Introduction: Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. is a highly valuable multipurpose herb native to the Himalayan region. Unsustainable harvesting of this species due to its diverse uses has resulted in a rapid decline in its population across natural habitats, thereby necessitating its propagation and conservation. To overcome this challenge, the potential of P. acinosa rhizomes for ex situ regeneration was evaluated. Methods: The current study aims to develop a standard propagation protocol for P. acinosa. Rhizome cuttings derived by splitting whole rhizomes were used to study the effect of various hormones and soil compositions on their sprouting and growth performance. Results: Soil compositions SC10 and SC5 consisting of soil, sand, pebbles, and vermicompost (1:1:1:1) and soil, sand, and vermicompost (1:1:1), respectively, were the most suitable compositions for the optimum growth of this species. The rhizome segments treated with GA3 (150ppm) induced the highest sprouting percentage (91.67%), with a minimum sprouting time of 23.25 days. The maximum root length (9.25 cm), shoot length (16.5 cm), and leaf number (11.25) were recorded for GA3 (150ppm) treated rhizome cuttings. Conclutions: Overall, the results of the present study helped in establishing a cost-effective, rapid, efficient, and simple mass propagation method for the target species. The results of this study will serve as a guide for the large-scale cultivation, effective conservation, and sustainable utilization of this economically valuable medicinal herb. Zingiberaceae rhizomes have been used in the traditional medicine practices of three ethnic groups; Dayak Linoh, Malay, and Javanese, of the Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia for generations. Althogh, it has been around for a long time, the culture of herbal medicine and knowledge about using Zingiberaceae rhizomes as traditional medicine is still not well documented. This research aims to identify, document, and determine the types, methods of processing, and use of Zingiberaceae rhizomes as traditional medicine. The research methodology was an ethnobotanical survey involving participant observation and interviews with informants in the three tribal communities. The research results showed that the three tribal communities use thirteen (13) species of Zingiberaceae rhizomes as herbal medicine. The most commonly used Zingiberaceae rhizomes were the rhizomes of K. galanga, C. longa, Z. officinale, A. galanga, Z. cassumunar, and C. zedoria, each with a percentage use of 11.54%. The most widely used methods of processing these Zingiberaceae rhizomes were by grinding and boiling. The most widely used mode of application of the Zingiberaceae rhizomes as a traditional medicine was by drinking. Fifteen diseases were reported to be treated using Zingiberaceae rhizomes in these tribal communities. The findings from this study indicated that the three tribal communities studied use the same types of Zingiberaceae rhizomes in their traditional medicine practices, but differ in their method of processing and mode of application of these plants. Adopting Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's formulations of the rhizome, this article will examine a dynamic that lies between the film Japón's (Carlos Reygadas, 2002) vernacular specificities, European modernist aesthetics and cosmopolitan spectatorship. The article aims to reveal that Japón, along with other contemporary slow films from around the world, has the potential to reify a deterritorialising and reterritorialising encounter that rethinks a Eurocentric genealogical reading of world cinema and challenges a capitalist code of filmmaking. Paris polyphylla is an important traditional medicinal plant of the Himalayan region. It is extensively used for the production of natural steroidal saponins and flavonoids. Although seed dormancy of wild plants can be broken to be artificially maintained and regenerated through micropropagation in the laboratory, the success of secondary metabolite production in higher quantities and the synthesis of superior plant metabolites have been very limited. In this study, we present differential metabolic profiling of P. polyphylla plants maintained for 8 years in natural and greenhouse conditions. Untargeted profiling of the metabolites through ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), followed by statistical analysis, identified secondary metabolites that were enriched in the naturally occurring plant roots compared with the greenhouse plant roots. A multivariate statistical analysis revealed the differential distribution of the compounds between the two groups. Overall, we identified 1,182 secondary metabolites, with 116 metabolites being differentially upregulated and 256 metabolites being downregulated. Moreover, 810 metabolites showed no significant variation under both growing conditions. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis revealed that the naturally forest-grown P. polyphylla plants were significantly enriched in steroidal saponins, lipids, vitamins, flavonoids, and flavonols. An analysis of the top 10 differentially upregulated secondary metabolites indicated a significantly enriched quantity of spirost-5-en-3,12-diol and kaempferol synthesis pathways, which are known to reduce the effect of free radicals scavengers inside the cell. In addition, veratramine alkaloids were also enriched under natural conditions. Our findings indicated that naturally maintained P. polyphylla plants are suitable for the extraction of medicinally important compounds. Our study established a causal relationship between the metabolic composition of the roots and their natural growth condition. This study highlighted the importance of environmental conditions in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites of plants.

Abstract Allagoptera campestris is an acaulescent, rhizomatous palm tree that occurs in grassland and savanna areas (Cerrado). In the Santa Bárbara Ecological Station (Águas de Santa Bárbara, São Paulo, Brazil) the species is found growing in three distinct conditions: 1) in the understory of Pinus species plantations introduced in the 1970s in formerly open savanna, 2) in an area where Pinus species cultivated in the 1970s were later removed and the remaining material burned, and 3) in an open, undisturbed savanna area without the interference of pines. Anatomical studies carried out with A. campestris leaves collected in the same three areas indicated leaf plasticity in response to growth conditions. To verify whether there are differences in vessel element morphology in belowground organs, light, and scanning electron microscopy analyses were conducted on portions just below the crown, in the middle of the rhizome, and the median portions of three longer adventitious roots sampled from three plants in each area. The study reveals significant variations in vessel element characteristics of A. campestris, with roots consistently displaying longer and larger elements than rhizomes, and environmental conditions, especially in pine understory, influence vessel dimensions, and hydraulic conductivity in a negative manner.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is a valuable sciophyte crop used as a spice or fresh herb in culinary dishes and for treating medical issues such as osteoarthritis, neurological diseases, vomiting, and asthma. The demand for ginger in the United States is remarkably high; it is produced commercially and exclusively in Hawaii but can only meet ∼20% of US demand. Light for ginger growth may be more important than is often assumed, but the roles of light in ginger growth and rhizome yield are not fully understood. We hypothesized that artificial shade would produce the highest yielding ginger compared with no shade. This study evaluated the impact of different shading suited for ginger growth and rhizome yield of different cultivars grown in a high tunnel. There were three levels (0%, 22%, and 40%) of shade using RCBD design. We analyzed the overall yield (weight) of ginger and the specific yield (weight) of different rhizome parts (biological root, edible root, and seed ginger) per plant in addition to plant growth data. Data were analyzed for 2018 and 2019, and shade conditions influenced ginger growth and yield. There was no significant difference between shade conditions or cultivars, but general trends found that data differed between the two growing seasons. In 2018, Chinese White and Hawaii Yellow produced a better (higher) yield under 0% and 40% shade. However, in 2019, Chinese White and Hawaii Yellow produced the highest total yield under 22% shade, but Bubba Blue produced the highest overall yield at 0% shade.

Cynanchum acutum L. (Asclepiadaceae) is a perennial vine weed widespread in the Mediterranean region. In Israel, it is native to areas such as the Golan Heights, Galilee, and the northern Negev. Recently, its range has expanded to the Arava Valley in the southern part of Israel. In this study, we investigate the biology and phenology of C. acutum plants originating from both native and invasive populations. To achieve this, we utilized rhizomes from the invasive area in the southern region characterized by a hyper-arid desert climate (Yahel), and from the northern region characterized by a temperate climate (Gvat). Additionally, we examine chemical-based weed management approaches for controlling C. acutum. Rhizomes collected from the northern region showed higher emergence rates at temperatures between 15-30°C, whereas at 35°C, rhizomes from the southern region exhibited a higher emergence rate. Phenology experiments conducted simultaneously at southern and northern locations revealed that plants from the northern location flowered first at both sites. However, flowering initiation occurred ~20 days earlier on average when plants from both populations were grown at the southern site. Pre-emergence herbicide treatments using indaziflam and pyroxasulfone were effective in inhibiting C. acutum root formation. According to the percentage of emergence, pendimethalin showed higher emergence (93% and 100%) in comparison to indaziflam (10% and 93%) and pyroxasulfone (72% and 70%) (2020 and 2021, respectively). Treatments including the herbicide fluroxypyr, as well as the treatment of glyphosate + saflufenacil + surfactant were highly effective in controlling C. acutum plants. These results offer valuable insights into effective weed management strategies for addressing C. acutum infestations. Moreover, our findings underscore the remarkable plasticity of this species and shed light on how populations originating from diverse habitats may have adapted to distinct environmental conditions.

Overuse of artificial chemical fertilizers could be detrimental to the environment. Utilizing beneficial microorganisms as biofertilizers is a sustainable technique that promotes soil health, crop yield, and ecosystem preservation. Curcuma longa L. is utilized as a medication since it has its antibacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-tumor characteristics, which reduce inflammation and hasten wound healing. The effect of E. cloacae strain MSR1, which is common in the roots of alfalfa grown in the Al-Ahsaa region, on C. longa plants is being investigated. C. longa rhizomes were planted under greenhouse conditions after being submerged in a solution of E. cloacae strain MSR1 (OD 500) or water treatment as a control for 12 hours. After 240 days of growing, ten randomly selected plants from each treatment were collected, and the vegetative growth and yield metrics were assessed. To investigate how E. cloacae influences C. longa production and chemical composition (photosynthetic pigment, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and curcuminoid), measurements were conducted as well as genes diketide-CoA and curcumin synthases genes. Our research showed that C. longa's growth and yield were favorably impacted by E. cloacae. Significant increases in the related plants' chlorophyll a,b, carotenoid, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels were likewise a reflection of the enhanced effects shown in the growth and yield parameters. Treatment with E. cloacae raised the curcuminoid's three sub-components' compositions to varying degrees: bisdemethoxycurcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and curcumin. Comparing E. cloacae treated plants to the control, high expression levels of the genes diketide-CoA and curcumin synthase-1, -2, and 3 were also found. The treatment of E. cloacae is a good biostimulant candidate for boosting growth and yield as well as raising the medicinal qualities of C. longa, according to the overall results.

Using visual hierarchy, representational media often separate diverse urban experiences. Three categories of foreground, middle ground, and background are easily distinguished in photography and painting. Urban sketches separate buildings, figures, and natural features. In architectural working drawing, “poché, entourage, and mosaïque” forms a structural system for representing cut walls, environment, and texture respectively[1]. Recently, photogrammetry or Lidar scanning claim to break these hierarchies by creating “a uniform unbiased document of things in space as they exist.”[2] However, these tools fail to reveal the speculative imaginary experiences hidden behind surfaces.This series of my drawings that I named “rhizomatic line”, is the result of a non-hierarchical process inspired by French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's concept of rhizomes. Described as an array of attractions without beginning or end, a rhizome negotiates between things, “fosters connections between fields, the removal of blockages.”[3] Rather than producing fragmented abstract shapes, the rhizomatic line moves between the objects and intertwines them. Seemingly recording eye movement, rhizomatic, line does not construct complete outlines, but through loosing their completion, it connects them. As it explores the city, it does not differentiate between humans, pedestrian lines, high-rise building edges, urban skylines, stairways, leaves of a small plant hiding behind a window in a private room, entrances to residential units atop towers, or imaginative spaces.When looking at similar images, different people show different eye movements.[4] A designer sees the world in the process of construction, and from multiple perspectives at once. Architects use a specific language to draw rhizomatic lines. Axonometric projection takes advantage of both the visual aspect of perspective in photography, as well as the mathematical precision of orthographic projection in computer cartesian systems. Although I do not claim that my rhizomatic lines are true or close to the vision, I emphasize on " a continuous space in which elements are in constant motion."[5] The dotted texture suggests one understanding of the scene's porosity, among many others. Through the blurring of boundaries between poché, entourage, and mosaïque, only a portion of the image is displayed as a work under construction, inviting the viewer to complete it with their imagination. In this sense, a rhizomatic line is not a cartesian representation of space. Inspired by the question ‘how might we do Action Research differently?’, this article provides an introductory diffractive mapping of the concepts and empirical studies intersecting Action Research and sociomaterial theories. After tracing the roots of Action Research, I zigzag to describing how Action Research has grown differently in prior studies informed by sociomaterial theories. I use these theories to disrupt everyday assumptions about Action Research in education and to make thinking visible and unfamiliar. I offer up a series of short vignettes based on a recently completed Action Research project with French as a Second Language (FSL) teachers in Ontario, Canada. I collide these data events with various sociomaterial concepts to open new opportunities for analysis when engaging in Action Research. Specifically, I engage the phases of the Action Research cycle and more-than-human collaboration in a research project to highlight the ways in which these processes are created and unfold uniquely, and how rhizomatic thinking can further open trajectories for transformation within this work. Most L1 (first language) Japanese speakers in Japan seem to think that they are monolingual. While it appears that Japanese people accept monolingual-ness as normative in the nation, there is little situated understanding of what makes up this Japanese monolingual-ness. This study reports on repeated, long, and mostly unstructured interviews with well-educated 'monolingual' male and female native Japanese speakers regarding their general life histories and experiences including the learning and using of languages, Japanese, English, and others. The four participants also reflected on why and in what ways they were 'monolingual'. The participants' narratives distinctively presented the structural characteristics of the rhizome, as described both in botany and philosophy (Deleuze and Guattari. 1987. University of Minnesota Press), i.e. a non-centralised structure as seen in the roots of ginger plants and in types of fungi. Objective: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and it is one of the most important spices in the world which produces spicy and fragrant flavors and it has many healing properties. This plant does not have the ability to produce seeds due to sterility. The growth of the plant through the rhizome causes the cost of cultivation and the probability of pathogen attack. Therefore, propagation using in vitro tissue culture be effective method for increasing the rate of proliferation and infection control. For obtaining the better results in tissue culture, explants should be prepared from healthy, fresh and strong maternal sources. Somatic embryogenesis usually not used for propagation due to mutation, so it is better to use the rhizome buds as explant to preserve genetic characteristics. Materials and methods: For micropropagation, explants including shoot, leaf, collar and buds of ginger in were used and cultured on MS basal medium supplemented with 9 different hormonal combinations (BAP alone or in combination with NAA) for shoot induction. Shoots were transferred to MS medium containing 1 mg/l NAA or IBA for rooting. Plantlets were transferred to pots and gradually adapted to the greenhouse condition. Results: The best explant for fast and easy multiplication of ginger was the healthy rhizome. MS culture medium supplemented with 2 mg/l BAP and 1 mg/l NAA produced 7 shoots in each rhizome bud. The best treatment for rooting was MS medium containing 1 mg/l NAA which produced 7 roots per shoot. Then, the plantlets were successfully adopted in pots containing garden soil and cocopeat at greenhouse condition. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that micropropagation of ginger plant is affected by the type of growth regulators and their concentration in MS medium and the rhizome buds were the best explants for direct in vitro propagation of ginger. This article focuses on the modern image of the labyrinth-rhizome in Maylis de Kerangal’s novels. Basing on the analyses of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (introduction to Mille plateaux), we explain the characteristics of this strange labyrinth, always in recomposition, and show how it fascinates the novelist. In a second step, we take the example of the labyrinth model which appears in Réparer les vivants : we formulate the hypothesis that it could represent the operation of the Cristal computer application used by health professionals for the organ transplantation procedure. In this essay, I set out to construct a philosophical-conceptual sketch of so-called inventive conversation, with its poetic-political implications and contrasts to conventional or reproductive conversation. To this end, I turn to Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's notion of rhizome as a fundamental via for the analysis, due to this reflection's heuristic potential and the broad possibilities for interpretative connection it generates in relation to ideas that emerge from diverse sources. First, the approach recovers some basic elements of the pragmatic-discursive perspective in the study of conversation as the primary figure of orality, before continuing to reflect on the defining elements of an inventive conversation (minoritary, creative, or unpredictable) necessarily related to ambiences of freedom through the characters and principles of the rhizomatic. The edible, endemic Australian species Alpinia caerulea belongs to the same family as ginger and turmeric. The rhizome and fruit have a mild ginger-like flavour, but there is very little information on its chemical composition or potential biological activities. This study found low levels of ascorbic acid in the fruit and fruit capsule (2.3–3.4 mg/100 g fresh weight), as well as detecting six polyphenols (rutin, quercetin-3-glucoside, quercetin, vanillic acid, kaempferol and chlorogenic acid) across all of the plant parts. The volatile profile of the rhizome was also explored for the first time. The volatiles were dominated (91.7%) by (E)-8(17),12-labdadiene-15,16-dial, but included 20 other minor constituents; mainly monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Extracts showed no inhibitory activity against tyrosinase or cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), but moderate anti-acetylcholinesterase was found for the rhizome and stem extracts. Further investigation into A. caerulea and other species from this genus will help to elucidate their full nutritional and bioactive potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Community broadcasting is anecdotally considered a 'training ground' for the mainstream media. However, there is little empirical research that supports these claims around skill development and career outcomes. Similarly, while community broadcasting is broadly recognized as contributing to social cohesion, the focus of much of this research is on audiences rather than the experiences of community media practitioners. This article is based on a broader programme of research that interrogated the experiences of people with significant involvement in the Australian community broadcasting sector to examine the impact of community media participation on career pathways. Here we consider a key finding: working or volunteering in community radio plays an important role in developing robust and meaningful networks, connections, and relationships which are central to shaping personal and professional pathways. Trade-offs in growth and reproduction are essential parts of the adaptive strategies of clonal plants. How rhizomatous psammophytes respond to aeolian processes (sand burial and wind erosion) by means of trade-offs is supposed to be especially important for their colonization on the active sand dune. Despite partial documentation of the responses of rhizomatous species to aeolian processes, how these clonal species respond to aeolian processes by means of potential trade-offs in growth and reproduction still remains unclear. In this study, we employed field investigation and biomass modeling to evaluate the trade-offs between vegetative and reproductive growth as well as between the number and size of ramets of Phragmites communis in response to sand burial and wind erosion. Sand burial enhanced the accumulation of seed biomass and reproductive effort. Wind erosion reduced reproductive effort but had no significant influence on seed biomass. Sand burial increased the biomass of ramets, while wind erosion increased ramet population density and accelerated ramet maturation. Our results demonstrate that rhizomatous psammophytes adjust their growth strategies in response to aeolian processes, i.e. reproductive growth and ramet size increase in response to sand burial, while vegetative growth and ramet numbers increase in response to wind erosion. This article contains suggestions to the Faculties of Theology in South Africa about an alternative way and direction to educate their students in this metamodern era. Because any learning in a specific profession implies lifelong and lifewide learning, the suggestion also includes the alumni of the faculties. This is all about rhizomatic learning, which involves both the educators and their students in an interactive and student-centred relationship where both parties act on an equal basis when deciding on the content and direction of the learning process for a specific year. It also involves the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and large language models such as ChatGPT. This is therefore an appeal to the educators of the Faculties of Theology in South Africa to become highly empowered resourceful online educators (HEROEs), also called recently minded educators (with no age restriction), taking a fresh look at the way in which they are currently teaching their 21st-century students and to maybe reconsider it in light of this article. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: Good contemporary theological education would mostly result in good Theology students and good pastors. This article suggests an alternative way to teach our students in the current metamodern era. Rhizomatic learning fits into the technological era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as well as Education 4.0, Learning 3.0 and the posthuman era.

IntroductionPhytolacca acinosa Roxb. is a highly valuable multipurpose herb native to the Himalayan region. Unsustainable harvesting of this species due to its diverse uses has resulted in a rapid decline in its population across natural habitats, thereby necessitating its propagation and conservation. To overcome this challenge, the potential of P. acinosa rhizomes for ex situ regeneration was evaluated.MethodsThe current study aims to develop a standard propagation protocol for P. acinosa. Rhizome cuttings derived by splitting whole rhizomes were used to study the effect of various hormones and soil compositions on their sprouting and growth performance.ResultsSoil compositions SC10 and SC5 consisting of soil, sand, pebbles, and vermicompost (1:1:1:1) and soil, sand, and vermicompost (1:1:1), respectively, were the most suitable compositions for the optimum growth of this species. The rhizome segments treated with GA3 (150ppm) induced the highest sprouting percentage (91.67%), with a minimum sprouting time of 23.25 days. The maximum root length (9.25 cm), shoot length (16.5 cm), and leaf number (11.25) were recorded for GA3 (150ppm) treated rhizome cuttings.ConclutionsOverall, the results of the present study helped in establishing a cost-effective, rapid, efficient, and simple mass propagation method for the target species. The results of this study will serve as a guide for the large-scale cultivation, effective conservation, and sustainable utilization of this economically valuable medicinal herb.
