The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) instrument was launched out of Wanaka, New Zealand, by NASA in April, 2017 as a mission of opportunity. The detector was developed as part of the Joint Experimental Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) program toward a space-based ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) telescope with the main objective to make the first observation of UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space. The EUSO-SPB1 instrument is a refractive telescope consisting of two 1m$^2$ Fresnel lenses with a high-speed UV camera at the focal plane. The camera has 2304 individual pixels capable of single photoelectron counting with a time resolution of 2.5$\mu$s. A detailed performance study including calibration was done on ground. We separately evaluated the properties of the Photo Detector Module (PDM) and the optical system in the laboratory. An end-to-end test of the instrument was performed during a field campaign in the West Desert in Utah, USA at the Telescope Array (TA) site in September 2016. The campaign lasted for 8 nights. In this article we present the results of the preflight laboratory and field tests. Based on the tests performed in the field, it was determined that EUSO-SPB1 has a field of view of 11.1$^\circ$ and an absolute photo-detection efficiency of 10%. We also measured the light flux necessary to obtain a 50% trigger efficiency using laser beams. These measurements were crucial for us to perform an accurate post flight event rate calculation to validate our cosmic ray search. Laser beams were also used to estimated the reconstruction angular resolution. Finally, we performed a flat field measurement in flight configuration at the launch site prior to the launch providing a uniformity of the focal surface better than 6%.

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25$^{th}$ of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Finally, we present a first reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks relative to the detector., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

- Abstract
The impact of drug delivery and particulate matter exposure on the human respiratory tract is influenced by various anatomical and physiological factors, particularly the structure of the respiratory tract and its fluid dynamics. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate airflow in two 3D models of the human air conducting zone. The first model uses a combination of CT-scan images and geometrical data from human cadaver to extract the upper and central airways down to the ninth generation, while the second model develops the lung airways from the first Carina to the end of the ninth generation using Kitaoka’s deterministic algorithm. The study examines the differences in geometrical characteristics, airflow rates, velocity, Reynolds number, and pressure drops of both models in the inhalation and exhalation phases for different lobes and generations of the airways. From trachea to the ninth generation, the average air flowrates and Reynolds numbers exponentially decay in both models during inhalation and exhalation. The steady drop is the case for the average air velocity in Kitaoka’s model, while that experiences a maximum in the 3rd or 4th generation in the quasi-realistic model. Besides, it is shown that the flow field remains laminar in the upper and central airways up to the total flow rate of 15 l/min. The results of this work can contribute to the understanding of flow behavior in upper respiratory tract. Graphical Abstract: (Figure presented.)

Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is associated with many pathological changes and liver damage is one of the most important consequences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise and the royal jelly on AST, ALT, and ALP enzymes in the patients with multiple sclerosis. Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 42 MS patients were divided into 4 groups: 1-"Exercise +Royal Jelly" (n=10), 2-"Exercise +Placebo" (n=10), 3-"Royal Jelly" (n=11), 4-"Placebo" (n=11). The Exercise started with an ergometer at 60% HRmax for 6 weeks, 3 sessions per week then increased steadily in the sixth week to 80% HRmax. The daily dose of the royal jelly was 1000 mg. Plasma concentration of the liver enzymes was measured before and after the study. Results: The levels of AST, ALT, and ALP enzymes were significantly reduced compared to the pre-test in the groups of the "Exercise+Royal Jelly" and "Exercise+Placebo" (P

Different parts of the climate system as well as precipitation are subject to the global warming and climate change. The aim of present study is monitoring different aspects of changes and trends in precipitation over Iran, using MERRA2 reanalysis data from 1990 to 2020 based on 7 indices including Maximum 1-day precipitation (Rx1day), Simple precipitation intensity index (SDII), Maximum length of dry spell (CDD), Maximum length of wet spell (CWD), Annual count of days when PRCP ≥ 10mm (Rx10mm), Annual count of days when PRCP ≥ 1 mm (Rxlmm), and Annual total precipitation on wet days (PRCPTOT). MERRA2 is the second generation of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) by NASA's GMAO (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Global Modeling and Assimilation Office), with spatial resolution of 0.5° (approximately 50 kilometers) and temporal resolution up to hourly data. Correlation analysis between MERRA2 and observation data of 48 weather stations indicates acceptable results all over the country especially for the North, the North West and the Western parts. The highest values of R² was 0.94 calculated for the wet regions of the North and Northwest, the least values were 0.63 for the arid regions of the South and the Central parts of Iran. Mann-Kendall non-parametric test was used for trend analysis and detection. Mann-Kendall test uses time series data for consistently increasing or decreasing trends in a variable and can works with all statistical distributions. The results show a decreasing trend on 0.95 significance level in 3 indices including PRCPTOT, Rx1day, Rx10mm, in the West and Northwest of Iran. Previous researches confirmed and reported the similar results. In the North East part of the country (parts of the Khorasan-e-Razavi, Semnan and Golestan provinces) positive increasing trends was detected. Considering this distinct regional discrepancy in calculated trends (trends in indices), it is necessary to focus on the effects of possible changes in pressure and synoptic systems on the precipitation changes over Iran. For RX10mm increasing trends was detected for the South and South East of the country. Due to the high absolute humidity in these regions, if condition is suitable for convection and air ascending, Sudan low pressure and Indian monsoon make possible high amount of intense convective rainfall origin from Indian ocean. Overall, MERRA2 shows an underestimate for the region of highest rainfall (North of the country) and an overestimate for arid regions. As a conclusion, based on the results of this study it is necessary to have a distinct precise plane not only for managing the decreasing trends in precipitation and water deficits, but also for mitigating impacts of intense rainfall and flash floods. Further studies needed to determine simultaneous (combined) effects of precipitation and temperature changes in other to manag water resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, three different surfaces of Titanium-coated PEEK were compared by their coating strength, cell adhesion, and cell growth, which were produced through electron beam PVD. For this purpose, different samples with smooth, moderate, and coarse roughness surface were prepared. Surface roughness measurement, AFM, SEM, and EDS analyses were applied to compare surface topography, observe the thickness and roughness of the coated surface, and characterised coated materials, respectively. Also, cross-cut, in vitro and in vivo tests were performed to measure adhesion strength and biological differences between samples to validate data on the optimum sample. The results showed that the adhesion strength between the coated layer and the substrate for every sample was reliable, but Cell adhesion for the sample with moderate roughness was the best among all. Therefore, moderate surface roughness was found to be optimum due to the obtained results from the interaction between implant surface and cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We summarize the state of the art of a program of UV observations from space of meteor phenomena, a secondary objective of the JEM-EUSO international collaboration. Our preliminary analysis indicates that JEM-EUSO, taking advantage of its large FOV and good sensitivity, should be able to detect meteors down to absolute magnitude close to 7. This means that JEM-EUSO should be able to record a statistically significant flux of meteors, including both sporadic ones, and events produced by different meteor streams. Being unaffected by adverse weather conditions, JEM-EUSO can also be a very important facility for the detection of bright meteors and fireballs, as these events can be detected even in conditions of very high sky background. In the case of bright events, moreover, exhibiting some persistence of the meteor train, preliminary simulations show that it should be possible to exploit the motion of the ISS itself and derive at least a rough 3D reconstruction of the meteor trajectory. Moreover, the observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, exotic particles whose existence has been suggested by some theoretical investigations. Nuclearites are expected to move at higher velocities than meteoroids, and to exhibit a wider range of possible trajectories, including particles moving upward after crossing the Earth. Some pilot studies, including the approved Mini-EUSO mission, a precursor of JEM-EUSO, are currently operational or in preparation. We are doing simulations to assess the performance of Mini-EUSO for meteor studies, while a few meteor events have been already detected using the ground-based facility EUSO-TA., QC 20170803

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and radiotherapy is the best treatment choice after mastectomy. One of the main aims of radiotherapy is applying the uniform dose distribution in all treatment volume. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chest wall angle by reference axis (vertical and horizontal) and use optimum wedge filter in post-mastectomy radiotherapy.METHODS: One hundred and forty cases of breast cancer after mastectomy surgery were included in this study. Patients were planned by ALFARD treatment planning system (TPS) or three-dimensional (3D) CorePLAN Treatment Planning System (TPS). Dose Volume Histograms (DVHs) with different wedge angles and without wedge were obtained for every case. DVHs were analyzed and compared for finding optimum wedge angle. Chest wall angle with reference axis was determined by GetData software. The wedge angel and chest wall angel were compared to reach the equation between them.FINDINGS: The optimum wedge angle was the function of chest wall angles. In all cases the compensating wedge filter causes better homogeneity index and results of chest wall angle determination were in good agreement with the results of DVHs as gold standard for determining homogeneity index.CONCLUSION: Finding of this study showed that an improved chest wall angle in mastectomy patients is a new method for choosing optimum wedge angle. Also time cost of this method is better than DVH technique.

This study aims to develop an innovative carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate with a U configuration to address strengthening interventions, where the increment of both flexural and shear capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) elements is required. This strengthening solution combines the near surface mounted (NSM) and embedded through section (ETS) techniques in the same application, since these techniques have already evidenced high performance on flexural and shear strengthening of RC beams using FRP systems, respectively. In fact, the proposed hybrid technique aims to mobilize the advantages provided by these two strengthening techniques by using an innovative CFRP laminate. The strengthening efficacy of this new hybrid NSM/ETS technique was numerically assessed and compared to the corresponding efficiency of NSM and ETS techniques applied separately for the flexural and shear strengthening of RC beams, respectively. The numerical models are described and the main relevant results are presented and discussed.

Multiple myeloma (MM) characterized by proliferation of plasma cells in bone marrow and production of monoclonal immunoglobulin's. Recently, arsenic trioxide (ATO), has been considered for treatment refractory MM. We assessed the safety and efficacy of ATO for patients with refractory MM. A phase 2, study of arsenic trioxide was conducted in 12 MM patients, whose refractory to two standard therapy. Patients received arsenic trioxide, 0.25 mg/kg/d for 5 d/week during the first 2 consecutive weeks of each 4-week cycle with 2 week rest. Patients who completed one 4-week cycle were evaluated for response to treatment. Twelve patients with refractory multiple myeloma received ATO. Disease assessment was based the amount of serum proteins electrophoresis. Of the10 patients; stable disease was observed in four patients(33%), progression disease in five patients (41.6%), complete response in one patient (3.8%) and the remaining two patients could not be assessed for a response (because of increased liver enzymes after the first week). Some adverse events: increase liver enzymes and serum creatinine, neutropenia, pruritus, nausea, vomiting, lower extremities edema, noninfectious diarrhea was observed. These results indicate that ATO is active and well tolerated as a single-agent salvage therapy, even in patients with late-stage, refractory MM.

Introduction: DEHP [di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate)] is widely used in plastic industry and some reproductive toxicity has been shown with it. So, this study was designed to evaluate DEHP effects on resumption of meiosis and in vitro maturation of mouse oocytes as well as development of embryos resulted from them. Material and Methods: Mice of 4-6 weeks old were administered daily doses of 50, 100, 200 µl of 2.56 µM DEHP solution for 12 days. Immature mouse oocytes were recovered from all experimental groups and matured in MEM-α medium containing 5% FCS with and without 7.5 IU hCG and 100 mIU rFSH. IVF was performed T6 medium. Results: Resumption of meiosis and in vitro maturation were significantly lower in all experimental groups in culture media without hormones compared to controls. Fertilization and embryo development were also significantly decreased in both culture media (with and without hormones). Conclusions: This study showed the adverse effects of DEHP on in vitro maturation and embryo development in a dose dependent manner.

- Abstract
We summarize the state of the art of a program of {UV} observations from space of meteor phenomena, a secondary objective of the JEM-EUSO international collaboration. Our preliminary analysis indicates that JEM-EUSO, taking advantage of its large {FOV} and good sensitivity, should be able to detect meteors down to absolute magnitude close to 7. In the case of bright events, moreover, exhibiting some persistence of the meteor train, preliminary simulations show that it should be possible to exploit the motion of the {ISS} itself and derive at least a rough 3D reconstruction of the meteor trajectory. We are doing simulations to assess the performance of Mini-EUSO for meteor studies, while a few meteor events have been already detected using the ground-based facility EUSO-TA.

The objective of this paper is to propose a new hybrid methodology according to near surface mounted (NSM) technique, using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement for the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. This NSM hybrid flexural strengthening technique combines non-prestressed and prestressed CFRP laminates in the same application in order to provide a good balance in terms of load carrying and ultimate displacement capacity to the strengthened elements. An experimental program composed of six RC beams was carried out to assess the benefits of this NSM hybrid technique when compared to the use of non-prestressed or prestressed NSM CFRP laminates (NSM prestressing technique). For this purpose, the performance of both techniques in terms of crack width, prevailing failure mode, ultimate displacement capacity, energy absorption, and load carrying capacity of the strengthened beams was assessed. The experimental tests were also simulated by executing advanced 3D nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, the potentialities of other configurations for the NSM hybrid technique by adopting different non-prestressed CFRP reinforcement ratios were numerically assessed executing a parametric study, and the relevant results are presented and discussed., The study reported in this paper is part of the project "PreLami - Performance of reinforced concrete structures strengthened in flexural with an innovative system using prestressed NSM CFRP laminates", with the reference PTDC/ECM/114945/2009 supported by FCT. The authors would also like to acknowledge the support provided by CLEVER Reinforcement Iberica Company, for supplying the adhesives and the laminates, and Casais and CiviTest for the preparation of the beams.
