Iridate pyrochlore oxides (Na,Ca)2-x(Ir2-yMy)O6·nH2O (M = Sb, Zr, Ru, Rh) are studied as resilient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction under acid conditions. The materials crystallise from aqueous solution under alkali hydrothermal conditions with 10-40 nm crystallite size. Refinement of their crystal structures using both powder neutron and X-ray diffraction determined the composition of the materials, and Ir LIII-edge XANES spectroscopy shows the average Ir oxidation state to be close to 4.5 in all materials, consistent with bond valence sums. All materials show high electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction and the electrocatalyst which best maintains activity on cycling is the sodium-free Ca2-xIr2O6·nH2O, while the (Na,Ca)2-xIr2O6·nH2O material shows highest activity when normalised for surface area. In membrane electrode assemblies, carbon corrosion is minimised, making the materials suitable for use in catalyst layers in proton exchange membrane devices, such as electrolysers and fuel cells. Under strongly acidic conditions it is proved that while A-site Ca and Na are readily leached, the average pyrochlore structure is maintained, as is electrocatalytic activity, with charge balance achieved by inclusion of protons in the pyrochlore structure in the form of bridging hydroxyls, as seen using inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy.

The rutiles (M,Ru)O2 (M = Mg, Zn, Co, Ni, Cu) are formed directly under hydrothermal conditions at 240 °C from potassium perruthenate and either peroxides of zinc or magnesium, or poorly crystalline oxides of cobalt, nickel or copper. The polycrystalline powders consist of lath-shaped crystallites, tens of nanometres in maximum dimension. Powder neutron diffraction shows that the materials have expanded a axis and contracted c axis compared to the parent RuO2, but there is no evidence of lowering of symmetry to other AO2-type structures, supported by Raman spectroscopy. Rietveld refinement shows no evidence for oxide non-stoichiometry and provides a formula (MxRu1-x)O2 with 0.14 < x < 0.2, depending on the substituent metal. This is supported by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis on the transmission electron microscope, while Ru K-edge XANES spectroscopy shows that upon inclusion of the substituent the average Ru oxidation state is increased to balance charge. Variable temperature magnetic measurements provide evidence for atomic homogeneity of the mixed metal materials, with suppression of the high temperature antiferromagnetism of RuO2 and increased magnetic moment. The new rutiles all show enhanced electrocatalysis compared to reference RuO2 materials for oxygen evolution in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte at 60 °C, with higher specific and mass activity (per Ru) than a low surface area crystalline RuO2, and with less Ru dissolution over 1000 cycles compared to an RuO2 with a similar surface area. Magnesium substitution provides the optimum balance between stability and activity, despite leaching of the Mg2+ into solution, and this was proved in membrane electrode assemblies.

Heterostructures built from 2D, atomically thin crystals are bound by the van der Waals force and exhibit unique optoelectronic properties. Here, we report the structure, composition and optoelectronic properties of 1D van der Waals heterostructures comprising carbon nanotubes wrapped by atomically thin nanotubes of boron nitride and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The high quality of the composite was directly made evident on the atomic scale by transmission electron microscopy, and on the macroscopic scale by a study of the heterostructure’s equilibrium and ultrafast optoelectronics. Ultrafast pump−probe spectroscopy across the visible and terahertz frequency ranges identified that, in the MoS 2 nanotubes, excitons coexisted with a prominent population of free charges. The electron mobility was comparable to that found in high-quality atomically thin crystals. The high mobility of the MoS2 nanotubes highlights the potential of 1D van der Waals heterostructures for nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

A synthesis method for the preparation of mixed manganese–ruthenium oxides is presented along with a detailed characterisation of the solids produced. The use of 1 M aqueous sulfuric acid mediates the redox reaction between KRuO\(_4\), KMnO\(_4\) and Mn\(^{2+}\) to form ternary oxides. At reaction temperature of 100°C the products are mixtures of α-MnO\(_2\) (hollandite-type) and β-MnO\(_2\) (rutile-type), with some evidence of Ru incorporation in each from their expanded unit cell volumes. At reaction temperature of 200°C solid-solutions β-Mn\(_{1−x}\)Ru\(_x\)O\(_2\) are formed and materials with x ≤ 0.6 have been studied. The amount of Ru included in the oxide is greater than expected from the ratio of metals used in the synthesis, as determined by elemental analysis, implying that some Mn remains unreacted in solution. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that while the unit cell volume expands in a linear manner, following Vegard's law, the tetragonal lattice parameters, and the a/c ratio, do not follow the extrapolated trends: this anisotropic behaviour is consistent with the different local coordination of the metals in the end members. Powder XRD patterns show increased peak broadening with increasing ruthenium content, which is corroborated by electron microscopy that shows nanocrystalline material. X-ray absorption near-edge spectra show that the average oxidation state of Mn in the solid solutions is reduced below +4 while that of Ru is increased above +4, suggesting some redistribution of charge. Analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure provides complementary local structural information, confirming the formation of a solid solution, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the surface oxidation states of both Ru and Mn are on average lower than +4, suggesting a disordered surface layer may be present in the materials.

Pyrochlore iridates (Na,Ca)2-xIr2O6·H2O are acid-stable electrocatalysts that are candidates for use in electrolysers and fuel cells. Ir LIII-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy in 1 M H2SO4 at oxygen evolution conditions suggests the involvement of the electrons from the conduction band of the metallic particles, rather than just surface iridium reacting.

One-dimensional (1D) atomic chains of CsI were previously reported in double-walled carbon nanotubes with ∼0.8 nm inner diameter. Here, we demonstrate that, while 1D CsI chains form within narrow ∼0.73 nm diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), wider SWCNT tubules (∼0.8-1.1 nm) promote the formation of helical chains of CsI 2 × 1 atoms in cross-section. These CsI helices create complementary oval distortions in encapsulating SWCNTs with highly strained helices formed from strained Cs2I2 parallelogram units in narrow tubes to lower strain Cs2I2 units in wider tubes. The observed structural changes and charge distribution were analyzed by density-functional theory and Bader analysis. CsI chains also produce conformation-selective changes to the electronic structure and optical properties of the encapsulating tubules. The observed defects are an interesting variation from defects commonly observed in alkali halides as these are normally associated with the Schottky and Frenkel type. The energetics of CsI 2 × 1 helix formation in SWCNTs suggests how these could be controllably formed.

Metal organic framework UiO‐66 is studied as an adaptable heterogeneous catalyst for glucose conversion. UiO‐66 was modified by; i) partial linker substitution, ii) particle size modulation and iii) linker defects. We studied the effect of crystallinity and functional groups on the glucose conversion and product yields. The main products are: i) fructose from the isomerisation of glucose, ii) mannose from the epimerisation of glucose and iii) 5‐hydroxymethyl furfural from the dehydration of fructose. We found that defective and nano crystalline UiO‐66 catalyst performs best for isomerisation. When 50 % of the linkers of UiO‐66 are replaced by a sulfonate‐containing linker, the catalyst shows higher isomerisation activity than other UiO‐66 catalysts. Naphthalene‐dicarboxylate linkers were introduced to induce hydrophobicity and this catalyst further increased isomerisation activity showing 31 % fructose selectivity. Finally, the promising catalysts were tested in a flow reactor and a bifunctional mixed linker catalyst possessing both hydrophobic and acidic functional groups is shown to be stable in a time‐on‐stream study.

Iridium-containing NaTaO3 is produced using a one-step hydrothermal crystallisation from Ta2O5 and IrCl3 in an aqueous solution of 10 M NaOH in 40 vol% H2O2 heated at 240 °C. Although a nominal replacement of 50% of Ta by Ir was attempted, the amount of Ir included in the perovskite oxide was only up to 15 mol%. The materials are formed as crystalline powders comprising cube-shaped crystallites around 100 nm in edge length, as seen by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray mapping shows an even dispersion of Ir through the crystallites. Profile fitting of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows expanded unit cell volumes (orthorhombic space group Pbnm) compared to the parent NaTaO3, while XANES spectroscopy at the Ir LIII-edge reveals that the highest Ir-content materials contain Ir4+. The inclusion of Ir4+ into the perovskite by replacement of Ta5+ implies the presence of charge-balancing defects and upon heat treatment the iridium is extruded from the perovskite at around 600 °C in air, with the presence of metallic iridium seen by in situ powder XRD. The highest Ir-content material was loaded with Pt and examined for photocatalytic evolution of H2 from aqueous methanol. Compared to the parent NaTaO3, the Ir-substituted material shows a more than ten-fold enhancement of hydrogen yield with a significant proportion ascribed to visible light absorption.

The development of THz technology and communication systems is creating demand for devices that can modulate THz beams rapidly. Here we report the design and characterisation of high-performance, broadband THz modulators based on the photo-induced transparency of carbon nanotube films. Rather than operating in the standard modulation mode, where optical excitation lowers transmission, this new class of modulators exhibits an inverted modulation mode with an enhanced transmission. Under femtosecond pulsed illumination, modulation depths reaching + 80 % were obtained simultaneously with modulation speeds of 340 GHz. The influence of the film thickness on the insertion loss, modulation speed and modulation depth was explored over a frequency range from 400 GHz to 2.6 THz. The excellent modulation depth and high modulation speed demonstrated the significant potential of carbon nanotube thin films for ultrafast THz modulators.

Achieving control over the size distribution of metal–organic‐framework (MOF) nanoparticles is key to biomedical applications and seeding techniques. Electrochemical control over the nanoparticle synthesis of the MOF, HKUST‐1, is achieved using a nanopipette injection method to locally mix Cu2+ salt precursor and benzene‐1,3,5‐tricarboxylate (BTC3−) ligand reagents, to form MOF nanocrystals, and collect and characterise them on a TEM grid. In situ analysis of the size and translocation frequency of HKUST‐1 nanoparticles is demonstrated, using the nanopipette to detect resistive pulses as nanoparticles form. Complementary modelling of mass transport in the electric field, enables particle size to be estimated and explains the feasibility of particular reaction conditions, including inhibitory effects of excess BTC3−. These new methods should be applicable to a variety of MOFs, and scaling up synthesis possible via arrays of nanoscale reaction centres, for example using nanopore membranes., Electrochemical control over the synthesis of nanoparticles of the metal–organic framework (MOF) HKUST‐1 is achieved using a nanopipette injection method to locally mix metal salt precursors and ligand reagents. Hydrothermal crystallisation of CeO2 from aqueous sodium hydroxide solution at 240oC using CeCl3·7H2O in the presence of hydrogen peroxide with addition of either SbCl3 or SbCl5 yields polycrystalline samples of antimony-containing ceria directly from solution. Powder X-ray diffraction shows a contraction of the cubic lattice parameter with increasing Sb content, and also a broadening of Bragg peaks, from which Scherrer analysis yields crystallite domain sizes of 5 - 20 nm. Scanning transmission electron microscopy provides consistent results with observation of highly crystalline particles of a few nm in diameter. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy at the Ce LIII and Sb K edges reveals the presence of Ce4+ and Sb5+ in the solids. To balance charge the presence of co-included Na is proposed, corroborated by elemental analysis. The general chemical formula of the materials can thus be written as (Ce1 xSbx)1 yNayO2-δ (where x < 0.4 and y ≥ x/3). Sb K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy of the substituted ceria samples shows that the local structure of Sb resembles that in NaSbO3, where six-coordinate metal sites are found, but with evidence of a longer interatomic correlation due to surrounding Ce/Sb atoms in the fluorite structure; this implies that the Sb is displaced from the ideal eight-coordinate site of the fluorite structure. This structural distortion gives materials that are unstable under reducing conditions, coupled by the ease of reduction to elemental antimony, which is extruded leading to phase separation.

Large diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes films are shown to have a doping level and THz conductivity that can be readily controlled using adsorption doping or electrostatic gating. The giant negative photoconductivity observed upon optical excitation is due to a rapid reduction in mobile carrier density, synchronously to a lowering of the momentum scattering rate. The large modulation depth and tunable recovery time open prospects for carbon nanotube films in ultrafast and THz devices.

The metal&ndash, organic framework MIL-101(Cr) is known as a solid&ndash, acid catalyst for the solution conversion of biomass-derived glucose to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF). We study the substitution of Cr3+ by Fe3+ and Sc3+ in the MIL-101 structure in order to prepare more environmentally benign catalysts. MIL-101(Fe) can be prepared, and the inclusion of Sc is possible at low levels (10% of Fe replaced). On extended synthesis times the polymorphic MIL-88B structure instead forms.Increasing the amount of Sc also only yields MIL-88B, even at short crystallisation times. The MIL-88B structure is unstable under hydrothermal conditions, but in dimethylsulfoxide solvent, it provides 5-HMF from glucose as the major product. The optimum material is a bimetallic (Fe,Sc) form of MIL-88B, which provides ~70% conversion of glucose with 35% selectivity towards 5-HMF after 3 hours at 140 &deg, C: this offers high conversion compared to other heterogeneous catalysts reported in the same solvent.

The synthesis of mixed-metal spinels based on substituted &gamma, Ga2O3 is reported using metal acetylacetonate precursors in solvothermal reactions with alcohols as solvents at 240 &deg, C. New oxides of Cr, Mn and Fe have been produced, all of which are formed as nanocrystalline powders, as seen by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The first chromium-gallium mixed oxide is thus formed, with composition 0.33Ga1.87Cr0.8O4 ( = vacant site). X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the chromium K-edge shows the presence of solely octahedral Cr3+, which in turn implies a mixture of tetrahedral and octahedral Ga3+, and the material is stable on annealing to at least 850 &deg, C. An analogous manganese material with average chemical composition close to MnGa2O4 is shown to contain octahedral Mn2+, along with some Mn3+, but a different inversion factor to materials reported by conventional solid-state synthesis in the literature, which are known to have a significant proportion of tetrahedral Mn2+. In the case of iron, higher amounts of the transition metal can be included to give an Fe:Ga ratio of 1:1. Elemental mapping using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy on the TEM, however, reveals inhomogeneity in the distribution of the two metals. This is consistent with variable temperature 57Fe M&ouml, ssbauer spectroscopy that shows the presence of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in more than one phase in the sample. Variable temperature magnetisation and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) indicate the presence of superparamagnetism at room temperature in the iron-gallium oxides.

We have investigated the structure of atomic defects within monolayer NbSe2 encapsulated in graphene by combining atomic resolution transmission electron microscope imaging, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and strain mapping using geometric phase analysis. We demonstrate the presence of stable Nb and Se monovacancies in monolayer material and reveal that Se monovacancies are the most frequently observed defects, consistent with DFT calculations of their formation energy. We reveal that adventitious impurities of C, N, and O can substitute into the NbSe2 lattice stabilizing Se divacancies. We further observe evidence of Pt substitution into both Se and Nb vacancy sites. This knowledge of the character and relative frequency of different atomic defects provides the potential to better understand and control the unusual electronic and magnetic properties of this exciting two-dimensional material.

We have recently reported a new method for the electrodeposition of thin film and nanostructured phase change memory (PCM) devices from a single, highly tuneable, non-aqueous electrolyte. The quality of the material was confirmed by phase cycling via electrical pulsed switching of both 100 nm nano-cells and thin film devices. This method potentially allows deposition into extremely small confined cells down to less than 5 nm, 3D lay-outs that require non-line-of-sight techniques, and seamless integration of selector devices. As electrodeposition requires a conducting substrate, the key condition for electronic applications based on this method is the use of patterned metal lines as the working electrode during the electrodeposition process. In this paper, we show the design and fabrication of a 2D passive memory matrix in which the word lines act as the working electrode and nucleation site for the growth of confined cells of Ge–Sb–Te. We will discuss the precursor requirement for deposition from non-aqueous, weakly coordinating solvents, show the transmission electron microscopy analysis of the electrodeposition growth process and elemental distribution in the deposits, and show the fabrication and characterisation of the Ge–Sb–Te memory matrix.

A surge in interest of oxide-based materials is testimony for their potential utility in a wide array of device applications and offers a fascinating landscape for tuning the functional properties through a variety of physical and chemical parameters. In particular, selective electronic/defect doping has been demonstrated to be vital in tailoring novel functionalities, not existing in the bulk host oxides. Here, an extraordinary interstitial doping effect is demonstrated centered around a light element, boron (B). The host matrix is a novel composite system, made from discrete bulk LaAlO3:LaBO3 compounds. The findings show a spontaneous ordering of the interstitial B cations within the host LaAlO3 lattices, and subsequent spin-polarized charge injection into the neighboring cations. This leads to a series of remarkable cation-dominated electrical switching and high-temperature ferromagnetism. Hence, the induced interstitial doping serves to transform a nonmagnetic insulating bulk oxide into a ferromagnetic ionic–electronic conductor. This unique interstitial B doping effect upon its control is proposed to be as a general route for extracting/modifying multifunctional properties in bulk oxides utilized in energy and spin-based applications.

Monosubstituted lacunary Keggin [CoSiW11O39](6-) ions on graphene oxide (GO) were used in a comparative imaging study using aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy at two different acceleration voltages, 80 and 200 kV. By performing a set of static and dynamical studies, together with image simulations, we show how the use of lower voltages results in better stability and resolution of the underlying GO support while the use of higher voltages permits better resolution of the individual tungsten atoms and leads to less kinetic motion of the cluster, thus leading to a more accurate identification of cluster orientation and better stability under dynamical imaging conditions. Applying different voltages also influences the visibility of both GO and the lighter Co at lower or higher voltages, respectively.

This paper presents the results of measurements of the temperature dependence of resonance Raman scattering from 2 atom diameter HgTe nanowires embedded in the central pore of single walled carbon nanotubes, over the temperature range 4–295 K and excitation photon energies in the range 1.65 to 1.90 eV. The spectra are analysed to extract the temperature dependence of the phonon energies and linewidths and the central energy, linewidth and peak scattering strength of the optical resonances. The temperature dependence of the peak scattering strength is explained by a model in which the resonance broadening is dominated by coherence lifetime broadening, allowing us to determine the coherence lifetime of the underlying optical transition: 9 fs at 295 K and 18 fs at 50 K. The results are comparable with similar results on carbon nanotubes which suggests that the optical transitions responsible for the Raman resonances are excitonic.

A new barium ruthenium oxyhydroxide Ba4Ru3O10.2(OH)1.8 crystallises under hydrothermal conditions at 200 °C: powder neutron diffraction data show it adopts an 8H hexagonal perovskite structure with a new stacking sequence, while high resolution electron microscopy reveals regions of ordered layers of vacant Ru sites, and magnetometry shows antiferromagnetism with TN = 200(5) K.

Electrodeposition of Sn from supercritical difluoromethane has been performed into anodic alumina templates with pores down to 3 nm in diameter and into mesoporous silica templates with pores of diameter 1.5 nm. Optimized deposits have been characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy (bright field, high-angle annular dark field, and energy-dispersive X-ray elemental mapping). Crystalline 13 nm diameter Sn nanowires have been electrodeposited in symmetric pore anodic alumina. Direct transmission electron microscopy evidence of sub 7 nm Sn nanowires in asymmetric anodic alumina has been obtained. These same measurements present indirect evidence for electrodeposition through 3 nm constrictions in the same templates. A detailed transmission electron microscopy study of mesoporous silica films after Sn deposition is presented. These indicate that it is possible to deposit Sn through the 1.5 nm pores in the mesoporous films, but that the nanowires formed are not stable. Suggestions of why this is the case and how such extreme nanowires could be stabilized are presented.

Partial substitution of Ce

International audience; The production of thin mesoporous silica films with small (similar to 2-3 nm) pores oriented perpendicular to a titanium nitride growth surface is demonstrated using two methods. These are the growth from a Stober silica solution with surfactant ordering at the surface of the electrode, and electrochemically assisted growth from an acidic sol achieved by polarisation of the electrode surface. The thickness, pore order and pore size that can be achieved with these two methods is contrasted. A number of methods to vary the pore size by using different surfactants and swelling agents are explored. The advantage of applying these growth methods on titanium nitride surfaces is that it provides access to a wider electrochemical window for nanowire growth and sensor applications with non-aqueous electrolytes whilst retaining good film growth and adhesion properties.

Solvothermal synthesis at 240 °C in ethanol from titanium(IV) isopropoxide and cerium(III) nitrate hexahydrate produces nanocrystalline powders of anatase-structured TiO2. At low Ce content (0.5 mol% Ti replaced by Ce) the materials contain mixtures of Ce3+ and Ce4+, seen from Ce LIII-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, which are well dispersed in the anatase structure as evidenced from nanometre-scale electron energy loss spectroscopy maps and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The addition of lactic acid to the solvothermal reaction produces less crystalline samples, proved by powder XRD and Raman spectroscopy, with higher surface areas from nitrogen adsorption, and that contain a higher proportion of Ce3+. This leads to material with high activity for photocatalytic hydrogen production from water under UV irradiation in the presence of sacrificial methanol and Pt catalyst. Further in situ XANES experiments at the Ce LIII-edge recorded on heating the materials in air above 300 °C shows that oxidation to Ce4+ occurs. This process, typical of the conditions usually used in the synthesis of Ce-doped titania materials, yields materials with lower photocatalytic activity.

High energy X-ray diffraction is used to follow in situ the crystallization of a cobalt gallate from metallic gallium under solvothermal conditions in an aminoalcohol, revealing the formation and decay of transient metastable layered double hydroxides. We present a study of two new solvothermal synthesis approaches to mixed-metal oxide materials and structural characterisation of the products formed. The solvothermal oxidation of metallic gallium by a diethanolamine solution of iron(II) chloride at 240 °C produces a crystalline sample of a spinel-structured material, made up of nano-scale particles typically 20 nm in dimension. XANES spectroscopy at the K-edge shows that the material contains predominantly Fe2+ in an octahedral environment, but that a small amount of Fe3+ is also present. Careful analysis using transmission electron microscopy and powder neutron diffraction shows that the sample is actually a mixture of two spinel materials: predominantly (>97%) an Fe2+ phase Ga1.8Fe1.2O3.9, but with a minor impurity phase that is iron-rich. In contrast, the hydrothermal reaction of titanium bis(ammonium lactato)dihydroxide in water with increasing amounts of Sn(IV) acetate allows nanocrystalline samples of the SnO2–TiO2 solid solution to be prepared directly, as proved by powder XRD and Raman spectroscopy.

A new mixed rare-earth orthochromite series, LaxSm1-xCrO3, prepared through single-step hydrothermal synthesis is reported. Solid solutions (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.625, 0.75, 0.875, and 1.0) were prepared by the hydrothermal treatment of amorphous mixed-metal hydroxides at 370 °C for 48 h. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals the formation of highly crystalline particles with dendritic-like morphologies. Rietveld refinements against high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data show that the distorted perovskite structures are described by the orthorhombic space group Pnma over the full composition range. Unit cell volumes and Cr-O-Cr bond angles decrease monotonically with increasing samarium content, consistent with the presence of the smaller lanthanide in the structure. Raman spectroscopy confirms the formation of solid solutions, the degree of their structural distortion. With the aid of shell-model calculations the complex mixing of Raman modes below 250 cm(-1) is clarified. Magnetometry as a function of temperature reveals the onset of low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordering of Cr(3+) spins with weak ferromagnetic component at Néel temperatures (TN) that scale linearly with unit cell volume and structural distortion. Coupling effects between Cr(3+) and Sm(3+) ions are examined with enhanced susceptibilities below TN due to polarization of Sm(3+) moments. At low temperatures the Cr(3+) sublattice is shown to undergo a second-order spin reorientation observed as a rapid decrease of susceptibility.

We have investigated the structure of atomic defects within monolayer NbSe

Cation size effects were examined in the mixed A-site perovskites La0.5 Sm0.5 CrO3 and La0.5 Tb0.5 CrO3 prepared through both hydrothermal and solid-state methods. Atomically resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the transmission electron microscope shows that while the La and Sm cations are randomly distributed, increased cation-radius variance in La0.5 Tb0.5 CrO3 results in regions of localised La and Tb layers, an atomic arrangement exclusive to the hydrothermally prepared material. Solid-state preparation gives lower homogeneity resulting in separate nanoscale regions rich in La3+ and Tb3+ . The A-site layering in hydrothermal La0.5 Tb0.5 CrO3 is randomised upon annealing at high temperature, resulting in magnetic behaviour that is dependent on synthesis route.

Ba4Ru3O10.2(OH)1.8 is prepared under hydrothermal conditions from a 2:1 molar mixture of BaO2 and KRuO4 in H2O (autoclave, 200 °C, 1 d).

This paper briefly describes how nanowires with diameters corresponding to 1 to 5 atoms can be produced by melting a range of inorganic solids in the presence of carbon nanotubes. These nanowires are extreme in the sense that they are the limit of miniaturization of nanowires and their behavior is not always a simple extrapolation of the behavior of larger nanowires as their diameter decreases. The paper then describes the methods required to obtain Raman spectra from extreme nanowires and the fact that due to the van Hove singularities that 1D systems exhibit in their optical density of states, that determining the correct choice of photon excitation energy is critical. It describes the techniques required to determine the photon energy dependence of the resonances observed in Raman spectroscopy of 1D systems and in particular how to obtain measurements of Raman cross-sections with better than 8% noise and measure the variation in the resonance as a function of sample temperature. The paper describes the importance of ensuring that the Raman scattering is linearly proportional to the intensity of the laser excitation intensity. It also describes how to use the polarization dependence of the Raman scattering to separate Raman scattering of the encapsulated 1D systems from those of other extraneous components in any sample.

We present a detailed characterization of the pyrochlore Bi2Ir2O7 prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis route from aqueous sodium hydroxide solution of NaBiO3·2H2O and IrCl3·5H2O in the presence of Na2O2 at 240 °C. Using 5 M NaOH solution as the reaction medium, a fine powder of polycrystalline Bi2Ir2O7 with an average crystal size of 10 nm and surface area of ∼46 m2 g–1 is produced. Structure refinement against powder neutron diffraction reveals a stoichiometric pyrochlore with no evidence for significant oxide-ion defects. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra recorded at both metal LIII-edges show that, although Bi is present solely as Bi3+, there is evidence for the oxidation of iridium slightly beyond +4. This would suggest some surface oxidation of iridium, which is also shown by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. We describe a systematic study of the hydrothermal synthesis of rare-earth orthochromites, RCrO3 (R = La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, and Lu) and YCrO3. All nine of these materials can be prepared in a single step by hydrothermal treatment of an amorphous mixed-metal hydroxide at temperatures above 300 °C upon heating around 24 h, with no post-synthesis annealing needed. The as-made materials are highly crystalline powders with submicrometer particle size. In the case of LaCrO3 the addition of solution additives to the hydrothermal synthesis allows some modification of crystallite form of the material, and in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate nanocrystalline powders are produced. Profile refinement of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data show that each of the RCrO3 materials adopts an orthorhombic distorted (Pbmn) perovskite structure. The hydrothermal oxidation of Ce3+ in basic aqueous solution by NaBiVO3 at 240 °C produces fine powders of cerium−bismuth oxides with crystallite sizes of less than 10 nm, as observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Analysis of X-ray absorption near-edge structure at the Bi LIII and Ce LIII edges confirms the reduction of Bi5+ to Bi3+ and the oxidation of Ce3+ to Ce4+, consistent with a general chemical composition CeIV1-xBiIIIxO2-(x/2) (x ≤ 0.6) for the mixed oxides. The refined cubic lattice parameters from powder neutron diffraction indicate a fluorite-like solid solution with volume that increases with Bi content. Pair distribution functions derived from total neutron scattering yield estimated values for refined particle diameters that agree with TEM, showing a decreasing crystallite diameter with increasing bismuth content, and a full analysis reveals that despite average long-range structure being described well as a fluorite solid-solution, the local structure is distorted. Ge nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in Al2O3 were grown by RF-sputtering. X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the stresses on the NCs. While small NCs ( 17 nm) demonstrated a compressive stress effect. This could be linked to the crystal structure of the adjacent Al2O3 matrix.

Two kinds of superlattices (i) with and (ii) without growth interrupt (GI) after deposition of 1.77 monolayers (ML) of InAs on GaAs (001) were grown by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXRD) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements in order to gain an understanding of the structural and compositional properties. In case (i) formation of coherent dislocation free self-organized quantum dots (SOQDs) with 2.8-3.2nm height and 13-16nm lateral size was observed, whereas in case (ii) no quantum dots had formed. In order to better understand the implication of growth interruption for the formation mechanism, highly localised assessment of the composition of the QD was carried out via atomic resolution Z-contrast imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).

The direct hydrothermal crystallisation at 240 °C of Pd2+-containing ceria is investigated to study the extent to which precious metal dopants may be introduced into the cubic fluorite lattice. Samples of composition Ce1−xPdxO2−δ, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15 can be produced in which Pd is included within the CeO2 structure to give a linear lattice expansion. Attempts to produce higher Pd2+-substitution result in the formation of PdO as a secondary phase. Ce and Pd were determined to be in the +4 and +2 oxidation states, respectively, by X-ray absorption near edge structure, suggesting oxide deficiency as the mechanism of charge balance. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis at the Pd K-edge reveals that Pd2+ has local square-planar coordination, as expected, and that a structural model can fitted in which the average fluorite structure is maintained, but with Pd2+ sitting in the square faces of oxide ions present in the local cubic geometry of Ce. This model, consistent with previous modelling studies, gives an excellent fit to the EXAFS spectra, and explains the observed lattice expansion. Corrigendum: Atomically resolved imaging of highly ordered alternating fluorinated graphene

One of the most desirable goals of graphene research is to produce ordered two-dimensional (2D) chemical derivatives of suitable quality for monolayer device fabrication. Here we reveal, by focal series exit wave reconstruction (EWR), that C2F chair is a stable graphene derivative and demonstrates pristine long-range order limited only by the size of a functionalized domain. Focal series of images of graphene and C2F chair formed by reaction with XeF2 were obtained at 80 kV in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope. EWR images reveal that single carbon atoms and carbon-fluorine pairs in C2F chair alternate strictly over domain sizes of at least 150 nm(2) with electron diffraction indicating ordered domains ≥ 0.16 μm(2). Our results also indicate that, within an ordered domain, functionalization occurs on one side only as theory predicts. In addition, we show that electron diffraction provides a quick and easy method for distinguishing between graphene, C2F chair and fully fluorinated stoichiometric CF 2D phases.

In common with rocksalt-type alkali halide phases and also semiconductors such as GeTe and SnTe, SnSe forms all-surface two atom-thick low dimensional crystals when encapsulated within single walled nanotubes (SWNTs) with diameters below ∼1.4 nm. Whereas previous density functional theory (DFT) studies indicate that optimised low-dimensional trigonal HgTe changes from a semi-metal to a semi-conductor, low-dimensional SnSe crystals typically undergo band-gap expansion. In slightly wider diameter SWNTs (∼1.4–1.6 nm), we observe that three atom thick low dimensional SnSe crystals undergo a previously unobserved form of a shear inversion phase change resulting in two discrete strain states in a section of curved nanotube. Under low-voltage (i.e. 80–100 kV) imaging conditions in a transmission electron microscope, encapsulated SnSe crystals undergo longitudinal and rotational oscillations, possibly as a result of the increase in the inelastic scattering cross-section of the sample at those voltages.

In this article, we present an investigation of (Ge + SiO2)/SiO2 multilayers deposited by magnetron sputtering and subsequently annealed at different temperatures. The structural properties were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, grazing incidence small angles X-ray scattering, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. We show a formation of self-assembled Ge clusters during the deposition at 250°C. The clusters are ordered in a three-dimensional lattice, and they have very small sizes (about 3 nm) and narrow size distribution. The lanthanoid chromites LnCrO3 (Ln: Y, La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu) are prepared by hydrothermal treatment (autoclave, 320—380 °C, 48 h) of an amorphous mixed-metal hydroxide precursor precipitated from aqueous KOH solutions of LnCl3 or Ln(NO3)3 and Cr(NO3)3 (70 °C, 2—3 d).

In this paper, Ge/Al"2O"3 multilayer systems were grown by pulsed laser ablation. The grown samples were annealed at 900^oC to promote the formation of Ge nanocrystals. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of a multilayer system. Grazing incidence small angles X-ray scattering technique demonstrates the formation of Ge nanoclusters formed between alumina layers. Room temperature I-V measurements showed weak carrier trapping in the system. This was explained by the leakage caused by Ge diffusion through the multilayer.
