Drawing on interviews with 10 U.S. student journalists, we introduce an ethics-of-care approach for trauma-informed journalism pedagogy. We express grave concern for mental health in journalism programs, offering an empirical snapshot of students' traumas and coping strategies. We confirm that student journalists, like working reporters, are traumatized by professional norms, high demands, poor boundaries, safety concerns, and ethical-professional responsibilities. Participants coped through emotional distancing, saving face, and relying on peers. We offer interventions based on student support needs and changing news values, including faculty affirmation, financial support, counselor support, diversity training, newsroom debriefings, emotional leadership, and reporting protocols.

This case study documents a large, 4-year university magazine's transition to virtual instruction during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using theoretical frameworks from Kuh's work on high impact practices (HIPs), this analysis offers empirical evidence that virtual student newsrooms may provide impactful learning experiences during crisis situations. Based on interviews, surveys, and newsroom observation, 23 magazine staff members reported improvements in their professional self-efficacy as they overcame logistics challenges and interpersonal hurdles similar to working media professionals. The case study also identifies strengths and weaknesses of crisis pedagogy. Implications for post-pandemic pedagogy and course planning are discussed.

Background: Insomnia is a prevalent condition in Australia that increases the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms. Cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia (CBT‐i) is the recommended 'first line' treatment but is accessed by a minority of people with insomnia. Aims: To improve CBT‐i access in Australia, we aimed to develop and test a self‐guided interactive digital CBT‐i program. Methods: An online randomised controlled trial was conducted from August 2022 to August 2023 to investigate the effect of digital CBT‐i, versus digital sleep education control, on symptoms of insomnia (ISI), depression (PHQ‐9), anxiety (GAD‐7), fatigue, sleepiness and maladaptive beliefs about sleep at 8‐week follow‐up. The control group accessed the intervention after the 8‐week follow‐up. Questionnaires were additionally administered at 16 and 24 weeks. Intent‐to‐treat mixed models and complete‐case chi‐squared analyses were used. Results: Participants included 62 adults with insomnia symptoms (age M (SD) = 52.5 (16.3), 82% female, ISI = 18.6 (2.9)). There were no between‐group differences in baseline characteristics or missing 8‐week data (14.5%). After adjusting for baseline scores, CBT‐i was associated with lower insomnia (Diffadj (95% CI) = 7.32 (5.0–9.6), P < 0.001, d = 1.64), depression (3.36 (1.3–5.4), p = 0.002, d = 0.84), fatigue (5.2 (2.5–7.9), P < 0.001, d = 1.00) and maladaptive beliefs about sleep (11.0 (4.1–18.0), P = 0.002, d = 0.82), but not anxiety symptoms at 8 weeks (1.84 (−0.1 to 3.8), p = 0.060, d = 0.50). Compared to control, CBT‐i was associated with greater rates of insomnia remission (ISI <8; 0.0%, vs 40.0%, P < 0.001) and response at 8 weeks (ISI reduction ≥6; 7.1% vs 72.0%, P < 0.001). Improvements in insomnia and depression were maintained at 24 weeks in the CBT‐i group. Conclusions: This interactive digital CBT‐i program resulted in large and sustained improvements in symptoms of insomnia, depression, fatigue and maladaptive beliefs about sleep in Australian adults with insomnia symptoms. This research analyzes mass media coverage of The Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) and Stop Enabling Online Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA), two landmark 2018 bills that changed how sexual content is moderated by internet service providers in the United States. Using critical discourse analysis, I compare the framing of 101 news stories about FOSTA-SESTA published in mainstream U.S. newspapers, feminist media, and LGBTQ magazines over the course of 7 years. Findings describe coverage of online sex work, online child sexual exploitation, and free speech concerns that preceded and followed the landmark ruling from 2017 to 2023. I show FOSTA-SESTA's progression as a topic of discourse during the 2020 presidential election and compare differences between coverage in ideologically diverse U.S. media. While mainstream news originally supported FOSTA-SESTA's efforts to restrict the tech industry and prevent online child sexual exploitation, alternative media tended to present skeptical arguments that supported sex workers and other marginalized communities. In spring 2018 the U.S. federal government forced Craigslist's sex forums closed. A new anti-sex trafficking law, FOSTA-SESTA, made exceptions to the Communications Decency Act, holding websites accountable for online "prostitution." This study used critical discourse analysis to trace how U.S. newspaper articles reported on Craigslist sex forums (N = 280) during 13 years of coverage preceding FOSTA-SESTA. Nearly 70% of the stories (n = 194) covered Craigslist sex forums through frames that emphasized sex work and sex crimes or regulatory efforts against Craigslist, focusing primarily on preventing digital sex trafficking. Newspaper narratives supported online surveillance efforts championed by conservative lawmakers across the country, who used Craigslist as a scapegoat for sex trafficking and online "prostitution." Consensual sex work was symbolically annihilated in coverage – evidence of a dominant representational paradigm that produced epistemic violence against sex workers. Self-published zines have been celebrated by some feminist communication scholars for offering an emancipatory outlet for women and queer people. But under the logics of late capitalism, zines cannot reach truly transgressive potentials. This study situates zinester politics within a framework of communicative capitalism: the current era of command individuality and "woke" representational politics. I also historicize zines' proliferation through punk, do-it-yourself (DIY), and White, feminist communities. Using critical discourse analysis as my analytical approach, I illustrate the interpellation of capitalist ideology in online questionnaires completed by 11 queer, White, feminist zinesters from Chicago. By harnessing a DIY production model, respondents said they resisted mass-mediated expectations of normative sexuality and gender identity, but zinesters also reflect and reify the systems they attempt to transcend. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is an increasingly important approach for critical-qualitative communication scholarship. This essay has three purposes: (1) to explain the history and applications of CDA, (2) to provide an empirical snapshot of how CDA has been used in journalism studies research, and (3) to provide a methodological intervention for improving CDA research in our field. An exploratory analysis of 17 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication journal articles reveals that CDA research on journalism topics has focused on race and ethnicity, analyzed mainstream print news outlets, and applied CDA as a method in its own right. Authors have neither adequately defined discourse for readers nor have they sufficiently explained their coding procedures. Journalism scholars must improve the transparency of our coding methods, and we must examine ideological formations beyond dominant-hegemonic discourses. By analyzing mainstream journalism, alternative media, and online media side-by-side, CDA researchers can build stronger theory about ideology's role in journalistic contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This content analysis quantifies messages in nutrition and fitness articles (N=423) published in high-circulation women's magazines (Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Redbook) and women's health magazines (Self, Shape, and Women's Health) during 2011 and 2012. Chi-square tests reveal statistically significant differences in articles' frames and sources by magazine genre. Counter to previous findings, our study shows that nutrition and fitness articles are most often framed in terms of convenience/efficiency and physical health. They rarely emphasize weight loss or appearance. Women's health magazines, however, advocate for weight loss more often than women's titles. Both genres most frequently call on clinical and professional experts as sources, but women's health magazines more often cite academic research. Our study contributes to a recently sluggish body of literature on health content across magazine genres, and for the first time examines sourcing practices in nutrition and fitness magazine articles.
