Abstract

We present the catalog of type specimens Mammal´s Collection of the Instituto Humboldt (IAvH-M). This includes three paratypes and a neotype which represent four nominal species. Corrections, additions, and information updating the original descriptions are incorporated for each nominal species. A photo gallery of the types is presented. Abstract

Dentro del Bosque Seco-Tropical (BsT) los mamíferos cumplen funciones ecológicas de gran importancia, como la polinización nocturna, la dispersión de semillas y el control de plagas, entre otras. Pese a que son esenciales en este ecosistema, los mamíferos están padeciendo diversas amenazas, principalmente la cacería, cambio climático, fragmentación del hábitat y desconocimiento. En la cartilla Mamíferos de la Ecoreserva la Tribuna, se presentan los mamíferos registrados en la línea base de mamíferos del proyecto Fibras realizado en la Ecoreserva La Tribuna en Neiva – Huila, brindando información de las descripciones taxonómicas, comportamientos, reproducción, huellas y otros datos relevantes de algunos mamíferos, los cuales fueron identificados al interior de la Ecoreserva. 11. Uncovering species boundaries through qualitative and quantitative morphology in the genus Dasyprocta(Rodentia, Caviomorpha), with emphasis in D. punctataand D. variegata

Abstract

The genus DasyproctaIlliger, 1811 includes at least 13 species of medium-sized caviomorph rodents, widely distributed from Mexico to northern Argentina. Despite being abundant, largely diurnal, and easily identifiable by their external traits, the taxonomy of this genus remains poorly understood. In this work, we reviewed the taxonomy of Dasyproctaalong the Andes and adjoining lowland areas of the western Neotropics, including samples from Mexico to northern Argentina, with emphasis on two species largely confounded—sometimes considered as synonyms—during the last century: D. punctataGray, 1842 and D. variegataTschudi, 1845. In the construction of our taxonomic hypotheses, we use a purely morphological approach, emphasizing qualitative and quantitative cranial features and external traits (color patterns). The results of multivariate statistical analysis and differences in color patterns support the species-level validity of D. punctataand D. variegata. Within this latter nominal form, we also include those populations from northern Argentina and eastern Bolivia that recently were referred to D. azarae. Based on our results, D. punctata(including bellula, callida, candelensis, chiapensis, chocoensis, colombiana, dariensis, isthmica, nuchalis, richmondi, underwoodi, yucatanica, and zuliae) extends from southern Mexico to Colombia, Ecuador, northernmost Peru, and western Venezuela, while D. variegata(including azarae, boliviae, and yungarum) is distributed from south–central Peru and southwestern Brazil to Bolivia and northwestern Argentina.

Abstract

We studied the postnatal development of the skull of Noctilio leporinus, examining the relationship between ectocranial elements, including shape changes and sutures closure and fusion. Most shape changes and structure development were observed at subadults and adults; zygomatic arch, sagittal crest, occipital process and mandibular processes developed noticeably up to the adult stage. Cranial sutures closure and fusion sequences of N. leporinus agree with that of hystricomorph rodents, artiodactyls, primates, sirenians and carnivores, beginning with the cranial vault followed by the basicranium, supporting a conserved pattern for mammalia. Detailed comparisons exhibit a complete cranial sutures fusion reached earlier at Desmodus rotundus regarding N. leporinus and Pteropus sp., and an early fusion for the sutura coronalis plus late fusion for the sutura sagittalis at N. leporinus regarding Desmodus rotundus. The drastic shape changes of cranial elements, as well as sutures closure and fusion in N. leporinus at subadults and adults, seem to be closely related to the acquisition of morphological specializations during stages of development when the fisher bat begins to feed independently. Abstract

The hindlimbs allow bats to attach to the mother from birth, and roost during independent life. Despite the great morphological diversity in Chiroptera, the hindlimbs morphology and its postnatal development have been poorly studied. Postnatal development of hindlimbs in Noctilio leporinus is described, further comparing the morphology of adults with that of Noctilio albiventris and previously reported species (Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus lituratus, Molossus molossus). The ossification ending sequence at autopodium elements of N. leporinus does not follow the distal to proximal directional sequence described for D. rotundus, exhibiting a heterochronic delayed ossification ending for the digits of N. leporinus regarding other hindlimb elements, associated with the bigger relative autopodium size of this fisher bat regarding other bat species. Noctilionid bats share the same adult hindlimb bone morphology, except for differences at hindlimb proportions and calcar ossification degree. There are differences in the number and position of bony processes, slots and sesamoids of adult noctilionid fisher bats regarding previously reported species; most differences are concentrated at the autopodium and are related to an increased surface for muscular insertion and the structural support of claws. Abstract

Thyroptera tricolor is a rarely collected bat species that inhabits lowland forests in Central and South America. We review the distribution of T. tricolor in Colombia, using previous and new records deposited in scientific collections of the world, providing a distribution map and a gazetteer with comments on available geographical information. We also provide first records for the Middle Magdalena Valley, with external and cranial measurements. These new records reduce the distributional gap between northern and southern records of the country. Additionally, by comparing dental measurements of our recent specimens with fossil records of thyropterids from the Magdalena Valley (La Venta deposits), we contribute to understanding the evolution and distribution of this group, reinforcing the hypothesis of evolutionary stasis. Thyroptera tricolor es un murciélago rara vez colectado, que habita bosques de tierras bajas en Centro y Suramérica. Revisamos la distribución de T. tricolor en Colombia, utilizando registros previos y nuevos depositados en colecciones científicas del mundo, incluyendo un mapa de distribución y un directorio geográfico con comentarios sobre la información geográfica disponible. Proveemos los primeros registros para el valle del Magdalena Medio, con medidas externas y craneales. Los nuevos registros reducen la brecha de distribución entre el norte y el sur del país. 22. Evaluación del estado de aplicación del Programa Nacional para la Conservación en Colombia del Oso Andino (Tremarctos ornatus)

Abstract

Los programas de conservación de especies amenazadas constituyen una herramienta útil para la planeación y ejecución de acciones coordinadas que influyan en el mejoramiento de la salud de las poblaciones de estas especies. Sin embargo, en Colombia es desconocido el impacto real que estos programas tienen al interior de las instituciones encargadas de ejecutarlos. Objetivo: Realizar una evaluación del estado de aplicación del Programa Nacional para la Conservación en Colombia del Oso Andino (PNOA) al interior de 26 corporaciones autónomas regionales (CAR) y la Oficina de Planeación de Parques Nacionales Naturales, Unidad Administrativa Especial de Parques Nacionales Naturales (UAESPNN). Metodología: Se realizó una revisión cuantitativa mediante los criterios de semáforo, sobre la información obtenida de 42 documentos institucionales de planeación y de las respuestas al requerimiento 2100-2-91674 de 2009 del Ministerio de Ambiente, Vivienda y Desarrollo Territorial (MAVDT), así como también de entrevistas con funcionarios. Resultados: Con excepción de una, la totalidad de las CARs presentaron información sobre la ejecución del programa en sus jurisdicciones (96,2%). La oficina de UAESPNN no presentó información física o virtual de sus jurisdicciones, impi- diendo su inclusión integral en el análisis cuantitativo. En total, la línea de acción del PNOA con mayor porcentaje de aplicación directa fue la línea I (conservación in situ: 30,8%), la de mayor porcentaje de aplicación indirecta fue la línea V (fortalecimiento institucional: 88,5%) y la de mayor porcentaje de no aplicación fue la línea II (conservación ex situ: 42,3%). Conclusiones: El PNOA presenta una ejecu- ción mayoritariamente indirecta, donde 61,5% de las CARs evaluadas sólo habían desarrollado activi- dades indirectas, asociadas con la ejecución de otros programas nacionales de conservación. Se evidencia un vacío administrativo al interior de las CARs en relación con la ejecución del PNOA, en donde las acc, Conservation programs for threatened species constitute a useful tool for the planning and execution of coordinated actions for the improvement of the population status of those species. Nevertheless, in Colombia it is unknown the real impact that those programs represent inside the institutions in charge of its execution. Objective: To conduct an assessment of the state of implementation of the National Conservation Program (PNOA) for the Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) in Colombia into 26 regional autonomous corporations (CAR’s) and the Planning Office of National Natural Parks, called Special Administrative Unit of National Natural Parks (UAESPNN). Methodology: A quantitative review was conducted, using the criteria of traffic lights, on the information obtained from 42 institutional planning documents and the answers to the requirement 2100-2- 91674 2009 of the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development of Colombia (MAVDT), as well as some interviews with officials. Results: Except for one, all the CAR’s submitted information on the implementation of this program in their jurisdictions (96.2%). UAESPNN showed no physical or virtual media on this aspect, preventing their integral inclusion in the quantitative analysis. The action line with the highest percentage of direct implementation was the line I (in situ conservation: 30.8%), the one with the highest indirect implementation percentage was action line V (institutional strengthening: 88.5%), and the one with the highest non-implementation percentage was action line II (ex situ conservation: 42.3%). Conclusions: The PNOA presents mostly an indirect implementation, where 61.5% of the evaluated CAR’s only developed indirect activities related with it, associated with the implementation of other conservation programs. 25. Performance of a GPS collar tracking a spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) in the Colombian Andes

Abstract

Objetivo: Describir por primera vez el desempeño de un collar de telemetría GPS en el seguimiento a un oso andino silvestre en los ecosistemas montañosos de los Andes colombianos (Cundinamarca, Colombia), como un aporte al conocimiento de la efectividad de esta técnica en la especie. Métodos: Se relacionó el número de posiciones GPS obtenidas y esperadas, el número de satélites enlazados, tipo de posición (2D, 3D), valores de dilusión horizontal de precisión, tiempo para la primera posición , estado de actividad-inactividad del oso y horas de día (luz: 05:00-18:00) o noche (oscuridad: 01:00-04:00 y 19:00-24:00) en que fueron obtenidos estos datos. Resultados: Existió diferencia significativa en la actividad del oso marcado, mostrándolo activo durante el día e inactivo en la noche (M-Wt, p=4.456E-38). No existió diferencia en el éxito de posiciones entre día-noche (t test, p=0.50) o entre actividad-inactividad (t test, p=0.73), sin embargo la actividad se correlacionó positivamente con el número de satélites (p=3.781E-5, r=0.22) y negativamente con los valores HDOP (p=1.583E-11, r=-0.35) y TTFF (p=8.911E-12, r=-0.36). Una vez en funcionamiento, el collar asumió una programación diaria de toma de posiciones distinta a la establecida, y dejó de funcionar súbitamente a los 41 días de seguimiento, permitiendo un éxito de posiciones de 5.3% respecto a lo esperado para 12 meses. Conclusiones: Durante el funcionamiento del dispositivo los patrones de actividad de esta especie y las coberturas boscosas/rocosas asociadas con su descanso nocturno, no afectaron negativamente el éxito de toma de posiciones, pero sí la calidad de las mismas. El daño prematuro del collar y el cambio arbitrario que asumió sobre la programación diaria de toma de posiciones, indican que el dispositivo evaluado no mostró un buen desempeño para el seguimiento del oso marcado. Methodology: The number of GPS positions expected and obtained were associated with the number of linked satellites, type of position (2D, 3D), values of horizontal dilution of precision, time to first fix, activity-inactivity state of the bear and hours of the day (light: 05:00-18:00) or night (dark: 01:00-04:00 and 19:00-24:00) in which these data were obtained. Results: There was significant difference in activity levels of the marked bear, showing it active during the day and inactive at night (M-Wt, p=4.456E-38). There was no difference in the success of positions between day-night (t test, p=0.50) or activity-inactivity (t test, p=0.73), nevertheless the activity was positively correlated with the number of satellites (p=3.781E-5, r=0.22) and negatively correlated with HDOP (p=1.583E-11, r=-0.35) and TTFF (p=8.911E-12, r=-0.36). Once operational the collar assumed a daily schedule of taking positions different from the established, and suddenly stopped working at 41 days of the tracking, allowing a success of positions of 5.3% compared to expectations for 12 months. 29. Variación morfológica en el cráneo del género Artibeus (Phyllostomidae: Chiroptera) con relación a las condiciones climáticas y geográficas en Colombia

Abstract

La familia Phyllostomidae ha tenido gran éxito en la utilización de una variedad de ambientes y de recursos alimenticios, reflejando una alta diversidad morfológica craneal. Al mismo tiempo, son un grupo polémico debido al traslape en su distribución y variación morfológica; además de la poca información en donde no han resuelto los patrones de variación morfológica dentro de las especies. El género Artibeus es un modelo para comprender la diversificación de estos murciélagos, siendo el tamaño y la forma un importante discriminador entre especies y un factor que permite entender la variación morfológica interespecífica. La alometría entre caracteres morfológicos es un patrón que sin duda refleja los cambios de forma y tamaño y también representan determinados aspectos del organismo que se relacionan con su entorno, las condiciones ambientales pueden inducir marcadas diferencias fenotípicas, encontrando en murciélagos que el tamaño varía a lo largo de los gradientes climáticos, demostrando que la temperatura y precipitación podrían ser importantes en la variación del tamaño y forma del cráneo. La morfometría geométrica es una herramienta que posee grandes ventajas y nos va a permitir evaluar la variación morfológica del cráneo en el género Artibeus, en relación con su distribución geográfica y condiciones ambientales en Colombia. Se fotografiaron 300 individuos en vista dorsal, ventral, lateral y mandibular del cráneo en 12 especies de murciélagos del género Artibeus depositados en seis colecciones biológicas. Los puntos de referencia (landmarks) se digitalizaron para cada cráneo por medio de la serie de programas tps. Se realizaron análisis de tamaño, forma, alometría, asimetría, condiciones geográficas y ambientales mediante modelos de Procrustes ANOVA del paquete geomorph en R. Como resultado se evidenciaron diferencias en el tamaño y forma del cráneo de Artibeus, con cambios en la forma en vista dorsal y ventral que muestran mayor variación en el aparato masticat

Abstract

The hindlimbs in bats are functionally adapted to serve as a hook to attach to the mother from birth, and to roost during independent life. Although bats exhibit different terrestrial locomotion capabilities involving hindlimbs, hindlimb morphology and postnatal development have been poorly studied. We describe in detail the postnatal development and bone morphology of hindlimbs of the nimble walker vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, and compare adult characters with the insectivorous Molossus molossus (erratic walker) and the frugivorous Artibeus lituratus (non-walker). The advanced ossification of most hindlimb elements of D. rotundus at the newborn stage is consistent with the functional role of this structure at birth in bats. The development completion events of hindlimb bone elements and bone processes in D. rotundus coincide with the cranial bone processes completion and suture closure events. Those events occur when individuals begin to feed by themselves. There are differences in the number and position of bone processes and sesamoids in adults among the compared species, most of which are described for the first time, and in the case of D. rotundus and M. molossus mostly related to a greater and tight articulation between elements. These facts seem to be closely associated with the different terrestrial locomotion capabilities, and in the case of the exclusively sanguivorous D. rotundus with specializations for obtaining food.
