- Abstract
In the Valle del Mezquital region in Central Mexico, the cultivar Xa’mniof Agave salmianais preferred by local artisans for the quality of the fiber obtained from its leaves. Length, thickness, linear density, and color of Xa’mnileaf fibers were evaluated in function of the maturation stage of the leaf (young, mature, and old leaves) and the growing environment (rainfed vs. irrigated areas). The effect of leaf maturity over the length was evident only in one group of fibers, which increased 17.5% their length in mature leaves and 85.5% in old leaves with regard to young leaves. As to thickness, it always increased as the leaf aged (i.e., from 102.5 to 135.9 and 161.1 µm, for young, mature, and old leaf fibers, respectively), and in most cases, their linear density increased with the maturity of the leaf (i.e., from 75.6 dtex in young leaf fibers to 94.1 and 186.0 dtex in mature and old leaves, respectively). By contrast, no significant differences in the color of the fibers were observed as an effect of the leaf maturity. The growing conditions, whether the specimen was planted in a rainfed area or near an irrigated area, did not influence the characteristics of the fibers.

- Abstract
In Mexico, the young cladodes (nopalitos) and floral buds (tunitas) of Nopalea cochenillifera are consumed as vegetables, but there is no information on the content of structural polysaccharides and dietary fiber in floral buds. The objective of this study was to extract, purify and quantify the structural polysaccharides (mucilages, pectins, loosely and tightly hemicelluloses bound to cellulose, and cellulose) and dietary fiber (soluble, insoluble and total) in floral buds of N. cochenillifera in four stages of development. The hypothesis was that soluble structural polysaccharides increase during the development of floral buds. Floral buds were harvested between 06:00 and 09:00 h in the municipality of San Ciro de Acosta, San Luis Potosí, Mexico; they were classified by their length and development in four stages (GS); thorns were eliminated, lyophilized and crushed. The structural polysaccharides were extracted in sequence with aqueous solvents (water, ammonium oxalate and potassium hydroxide). Soluble dietary fiber was determined as the sum of mucilage, pectin and loosely bound hemicelluloses, and insoluble as the sum of tightly bound hemicelluloses and cellulose. Total dietary fiber was the sum of all structural polysaccharides. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications per treatment. The content of mucilage and loosely bound hemicelluloses varied between GS, from 5.6 to 9.8 % and from 3.1 to 15.0 %. Pectins, tightly bound hemicelluloses and cellulose remained stable during the development of floral buds (6.4, 12.4 and 12.7 %). The GS2 had the highest dietary fiber content (46.3 %). The content of mucilages, loosely bound hemicelluloses and total and soluble dietary fiber increased in floral buds of N. cochenillifera in GS2, followed by their decrease in GS3 and GS4. AGAVES , *ASPARAGACEAE , *MESTIZOS , *CONSTRUCTION materials , *MULTIVARIATE analysis - Abstract
The interaction between maguey (Agave spp.) and people in Mesoamerica has induced high diversity in the genus. Among several indigenous localities in Central Northern Mesoamerica, the Hñähñu and mestizos towns with Hñähñu culture preserve maguey's traditional use. The objective of this study was to document the maguey intraspecific variation of two Agave species (A. mapisaga Trel. and A. salmiana Otto ex Salm-Dyck.), for “pulque" production, at 12 localities in Central Mexico within the Hñähñu culture area, and to assess the relationship between the uses and maguey variants and to estimate the biocultural heritage of maguey. Our hypothesis was that current maguey variant richness at the central northern Mesoamerican region directly relates to the variety for its use, which have persisted since prehispanic times. The experimental design was completely randomized and included 12 localities from the Hñähñu and mestizo localities in central Mexico. Key informants (16) from six localities were interviewed and maguey variants collected, both, from wild and cultivated environments. A multivariate analysis classified the localities based on its maguey variants and according to their uses. The intraspecific variation of the pulque maguey includes six A. mapisaga variants and 19 from A. salmiana. There were 21 biological variants at the Hñähñu and 15 in the mestizo localities. Agave salmiana stands out for its highest variant richness (39 % of the biological variants). A half of the variants are exclusive to a single locality. The indicator variant of the mestizo localities is ayoteco, and those of the Hñähñu localities are k'ank'uada and dämni. The Agave variants were classified in six groups, the most numerous group for “aguamiel" production, flowering stalk as candy, leaves for food, construction and medicine and as host of larvae (“worms"). Sixteen uses were recorded. Agave salmiana is the most used, followed by A. salmiana ssp. crassispina and A. mapisaga. The most important current uses are: for obtaining aguamiel, forage, construction materials and substrate for red and white worms (Aegiale hesperiaris and Hypopta agavis). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Meridional Highland of Mexico is located 35 % of the Mexican species of Opuntia and some 144 variants, with different grade of humanization that they are used by their cladode for forage, nopalitos like greenness and their fruits. With the purpose of contributing to elucidate the taxonomy of the genus and the process of their domestication, 42 morphological attributes of developed cladodios, nopalitos and fruits were analyzed, of 243 variants of Opuntia, gathered in 31 localities of seven states of the Meridional Highland of Mexico. The first ordination axis corresponded to domestication gradient toward plants with large fruits and cladodes without thorns; the second ordination axis showed another domestication tendency toward plants, also with large fruits, but with cladodes with prominent thorns. The third ordination axis stood out two tendencies opposed in the variants less humanized, characterized by attributes probably more related with the natural selection. En the clasification 76 groups were obtained. The most important attributes for the classification were the quantity of radial thorns and the number of thorns for areole in the cladodes, and the color and weight of the pulp of the fruits. The classification reveals the elements of the syndrome of domestication of Opuntia for fruit; the weight of the pulp of the fruit appears as the main component, seconded by the characteristics of the areolas and thorns, and then for the longitude and color of the fruit.

- Abstract

Traditional land use systems managed by small-scale farmers, often indigenous in Mexico, are a reservoir of plant genetic resources and are considered a backbone for secure agricultural food production and in situ conservation. The Tének farmers in the Huasteca Potosina region in Mexico manage highly diverse food biota in their agroecosystem complex that includes swidden maize fields locally known as milpas, agroforestry systems mainly dedicated to coffee and fruit tree production (te’loms), and home gardens. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the total, specific and intraspecific, diversity of food crops of the agroecosystem complex of the Tének and to learn how diversity parameters interrelate or co-vary. It considers the three main production systems of 33 farmers operating in three communities at different altitudes. The overall research question was: How is edible plant diversity in the different land use systems being simultaneously managed by Tének farmers characterized, interrelated and defined? The study registered 149 botanical species from 108 genera that belong to 53 plant families. They were registered in the milpas, home gardens and te’loms, for a total of 347 between farmer recognized variants (FVar, 238) and farmer recognized species with no variants (FSpe, 109). FVar include 68.6% of the total farmer-recognized edible plant diversity, showing the dominance of intraspecific diversity in the agroecosystem complex. This highlights the need to document the richness of the managed world’s crop genetic capital at the appropriate level. This study leads to five overall main conclusions: (1) The Tének in the Huasteca Potosina cultivate a high (and, so far, incomparable) diversity of different food crops at both inter- and intraspecific levels, with the medium altitude site showing the highest diversity; (2) The three different production systems serve as a specific pool for plant genetic resources and there is low similarity between and within systems and localities, making it necessary to prioritize depending on conservation efforts and promotion of use; (3) The FVar in the milpa serve as a significant indicator of the total FVar+FSpe in the agroecosystem complex, showing that diversity covaries within and between production systems; (4) The identification of predictor variables for crop diversity is challenging; marginal conditions (distance, slope and rockiness) seem to play a significant role; and, (5) The Tének people have a deep and specific knowledge about their edible plant diversity, which they classify using a practical classification system based on utility and which has a high correspondence with Linnaean taxonomy. Based on results and these conclusions, the agroecosystem complex of the Tének in the Huasteca Potosina, in terms of richness, can be proposed here as an agrobiodiversity hotspot for edible plants in Mexico, and perhaps for the world. While it is being threatened by a variety of ongoing changes, such rich biodiversity deserves efforts to guarantee in situ conservation, both for the benefit of the farmers and their families and for the global community. The family economy in an indigenous population is mainly composed of the use and production of food itself. As such, it is mainly based on the family work force, reciprocal and eventually salaried, both in the cornfield and in the backyard. The prevailing economic system also impacts the region of study, because it opted for globalization and, with it, the modernization of agriculture by promoting the development of business agriculture, especially export, developing and implementing policies and programs that they left out family farmers. This causes the indigenous population of San Luis Potosí to migrate to find other sources of income for the family. The situation described could be counteracted by encouraging greater use of the natural food resources available in the locality as well as improving the family economy. In order to carry out this research, we worked under a qualitative and quantitative approach. Under the qualitative method, interviews were conducted with families to gather important information in relation to the strategies of the heads of families for the acquisition of monetary income, trends in the consumption of natural or processed foods, as well as gathering information on productive resources. as land and inputs that families have and, with the quantitative method, the collected data will be analyzed, such as the daily expenses that families make and how they distribute the economic income. They wrote down the expenses they made during the day, as well as the RNAs they consumed during the day. The use of natural resources for food is declining within the community of Xolol, due to the constant change of climate, lack of access to economic resources, inputs and land. Due to these situations, the heads of family go out in search of economically remunerated work activities to support the family, this forces them to leave the lands, to a greater consumption of industrialized products and therefore to a change of food tastes, leading them at the end to A dependence on markets. However, this does not mean that local food plants are consumed, because there is a cultural and religious relationship, especially in the elderly. Investigadores Estudiantes

In order to understand the functioning of the "Ojo de Agua" spring in the municipality of Moctezuma, SLP, Mexico, a multidisciplinary study was carried out which contemplated the various environmental elements that interact with groundwater, based on the Theory of Groundwater Flow Systems (TGFS) proposed by Tóth (1963); The environmental elements studied include the soil and vegetation associated with the recharge area, the geology and its structures that determine the direction, movement and chemistry of the water and the society that influences or is affected by the environmental problems of the spring. The work consisted of four stages; the first one was the management stage, in which dates were established, permits were requested and the link with the population was made together with the officials of the Municipality of Moctezuma; the design of the necessary formats for the collection of field information was also made, the area of study was defined and the necessary information was compiled. The second stage was the field stage, which consisted of several phases: a) the sampling of water samples and hydrogeochemical parameters in situ from the censused uses, which was carried out in three sampling campaigns (September 2018, November 2018 and February-March 2019), b) the sampling of vegetation cover in the area of potential recharge of the spring by means of the step-point method (Raymond y Merton, 1957) from February to April 2019 and c) the application of semi-structured interviews to the population and key figures in the municipal capital of Moctezuma, by means of a convenience sampling, from February to March 2019. The third stage was the laboratory stage where chemical and physicochemical analyses of surface and groundwater samples were carried out by means of the ICP-OES optical emission spectrometer and the ICP-MS mass spectrometer. And finally, the data processing stage where the analysis of the information collected in the field and laboratory was performed with the help of different specialized computer programs. A total of 39 samples were obtained in 25 exploitations that include embankments, springs, wells and wells, with which the flow direction of the groundwater was identified from west to east, the quality of the spring based on NOM-127-SSA1-1994, which was of good quality for the spring, the potential recharge area of the spring located in the western part of the spring in the Santa Catarina anticlinatory and eight families of water that were bicarbonated-mixed (HCO₃₃-MIX), bicarbonate-calcium (HCO₃-Ca), sodium bicarbonate (HCO₃-Na), mixed (MIX-MIX), calcium mix (MIX-Ca), sodium mix (MIX-Na), mixed sulphate (SO4-MIX) and calcium chloride (Cl-Ca). There were 150 plots of vegetation cover in the potential recharge area with which it obtained a percentage ranging from 47.2 to 52.8 %, with which it was defined that the ecosystem is not considered as "healthy". The interviews conducted with the inhabitants of Moctezuma and the municipal authorities were a very useful tool to identify possible factors that could have caused the decrease of the spring and to know the level of interest of the people with respect to the environmental problem. They also helped to identify that people's perception that the decrease in rainfall was one of the factors that had caused the problem of the spring, was not correct because analysis of time series of precipitation and temperature of the Montezuma area showed that there was no trend in a period from 1970 to 2016. Finally, it could be observed that one of the wells (located in the town of El Picacho) used to supply water to Moctezuma has a chemical composition similar to that of the spring, which suggests that both may have a connection in the underground flow system and the extraction from the well may have an influence on the "Ojo de agua" spring, being a factor in the environmental problem. The Bufa hill is located in Zacatecas city. It is one of the most representative destinations in the state for its scenic, historical, cultural and religious beauty. This tourist attraction has natural resources, such as historical and religious places with high tourist potential. Sustainable tourism has the capacity to boost an empathetic activity with the environment, social and economic development of the place. However, it must be a planned activity, based on sustainability and effective management of the destination. This research was based on the calculation of the tourist carrying capacity in the Bufa hill, Zacatecas, to estimate the maximum number of people that the destination can support without presenting an environmental and social degradation, from a physical, real and effective approach. Semi-structured were held interviews from tourists, service providers, officials and the local population of the destination. It will be used for identifying the perception of aspects of service conditions, security, satisfaction and operation of the visit. The site was characterized to achieve an assessment of the tourist resources, such as the identification of problems and possible solutions that were proposed. It was determined through the contrast of results, from the three approaches was not surpassed that the tourism carrying capacity. Nevertheless, the perception of the main actors points out that the destination receives more tourists than it can support. It was determined that the management of the destination is inefficient, this through the identification of perceived problems, such as the lack of a registration system, garbage, insecurity, lack of personnel and the absence of a sewer system in the place.Concerning the operation of the place, it was discovered that La Bufa hill has the management of five governmental entities that work in an autonomously and dismantled way, generating inefficient management; SECTUR, municipal DIF, the Diocese of Zacatecas, el Instituto Cultural del Estado de Zacatecas and the city council of the state. It is concluded that the lack of collaboration between government entities, as well as the inefficient management of the destination, cause a negative perception of the place. The tourism activity, carried out in a sustainable way, can foster the tourist attractions; however, it must be based on a specific development plan. The natural, cultural, historical and religious resources of the Bufa hill make this place one of the most important, however, the identified problems through the perception of tourism actors and the dynamics of destinations management of public use of the place and consequently the inefficient management of the destination. They are the determining factors that seek a tourist development in the Bufa hill. Investigadores Estudiantes

San Nicolás de los Montes is a rural locality located in the municipality of Tamasopo, in the Huasteca Potosina, the second most visited and with important tourist attractions region of the state of San Luis Potosí. This town has natural resources with great beauty and well preserved, potentially usable, for which its inhabitants have expressed the desire to develop tourist activities in the region. Nature tourism has the capacity to promote community development. However, it should be a complementary and planned activity, and to seek sustainability based on local population’s knowledge and strategies for the resource’s use. In this research, ot was analyzed the process of participation and emancipation of the community of San Nicolás de los Montes, Tamasopo, in the development of a nature tourism project that promotes the diversification of economic activities and community development and, in turn, supports the local natural and cultural resources’ conservation. The participatory rural diagnosis and participation ladder were used to analyze participation and involvement in the construction of a nature tourism project. Six community workshops were held, as well as an assessment of tourism resources, also, the identification of problems and the proposal of possible solutions. There were carried out tree samplings of water to determine its quality as well as three botanical collections, in order to know the state of the potential natural resources for use. The ideal tourism model was identified and a nature tourism project was generated. It was determined that the level of participation is by incentives. Six problems and four current improvement projects were identified. With regard to water and flora resources, acceptable results were obtained, since the water does not present harmful agents in the tourist season although this does occur in the rainy season. With regard to flora, 46 species were identified along the .access routes to the interest places. It is concluded that the personal interests and the lack of incentives, cause low participation of the population in community workshops. Nature tourism, performed in a sustainable way, can improve population’s quality of life; however, effective training and professional experts in the planning stages must accompany it. The state of the natural resources and the cultural manifestations of the locality, enrich their tourist potentiality, however, the problems and elements related to the social dynamics, are the predominant factor in the search for consolidation of a community tourism project.

Gully erosion is an important global problem that accelerates desertification in arid and semi-arid environments. Gully erosion is a complex process involving the interaction among several environmental variables that cause gully initiation and development. This study was conducted in the semi-arid region of Cerro de San Pedro, San Luis Potosi and its objectives were to: (1) identify the environmental and anthropogenic factors related to gully erosion; (2) analyse the differences regarding these factors between stable (ungullied) and unstable (gullied) sub-basins and (3) generate a model to evaluate the susceptibility to gully erosion. Gully activity and dimensions were characterised in the field and a correlation analysis was undertaken to determine their relationships with groundcover, topographic attributes and anthropogenic features such as distance to roads and small water dams. Wilcoxon rank sum tests were done to identify differences between sub-basins with and without gullies and to determine thresholds of gully presence-absence, a covariance analysis was conducted. All explanatory variables were integrated into a susceptibility model by means of a CART classification tree. The highest correlations were found between gully characteristics and topographic attributes and slacking of soil aggregates in high ridges and deeply incised streams. Unstable sub-basins had gentler slopes, minor sediment transport capacity and stream power, lower ground cover and minor distance to roads and dams compared to stable sub-basins. The areas located

Mexico is interested in promoting the implementation of carbon capture forestry projects, and the Mexican Carbon Standard NMX-AA-173-SCFI-2015 provides the principles and criteria for carrying them out. This paper presents a methodological approach to fulfill NMX-AA-173-SCFI-2015 by determining eligible areas for carbon capture, as well as an estimate of the carbon capture potential by considering the carbon density of the surrounding natural forest vegetation. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite information and auxiliary data were combined to determine the potential capture in the eligible areas inside the Priority Region for Conservation in Xilitla (RPCX), where have been identified a surface of 2,136 ha with a permanent non forest condition in at least the past five years. The results indicate this area is divided in 55 properties, including ejidos, indigenous communities, and small holders that are within the RPCX, of which only five ejidos are viable for carbon capture projects. The Ollita del Pino ejido is one of them and has a total eligible surface area of 83 ha with an estimated carbon capture potential of 10,061 TCO2 over the long term (≥ 20 years). The possibility of entering a restoration project under the Mexican Carbon Standard NMX-AA-173.SCFI-2015 was explored there, in which a participatory workshop was held that calculated a carbon forestry restoration project would reap an estimated $1,171/ha-1y-1. After the workshop, surveys were carried out to verify the full, free and informed consent (CPLI) of the ejidatarios to participate in the project, as indicated by the safeguards established by the norm. However, the proposal did not arouse the interest of the ejidatarios, the main cause of rejection was the uncertainty of converting their farm land to forest, and if would be worth sacrificing the food security enjoyed. Other obstacles were the lack of support from governmental and non-governmental organizations, the lack of economic resources and investors for the seed capital required, and the poor dissemination of information about such carbon capture projects and their market potential.

Plants have certain characteristics which allow them to respond to various environmental conditions, like changes in climate, water loss in the soil, lack of minerals; among others. In some of these so-called traits, the responses to climatic phenomena such as drought can be evidenced through morphological adaptations (spines, succulent tissues, trichomes, among others) or physiological adaptations (regulation of water potential at the cellular level, the concentration of nutrients, etc.) In certain areas of Brazil such as the Mata Atlântica biome, drought events are increasingly occurring and affecting human activities and the environment, and it is required to understand if tree species with traits adapted to dry conditions are occurring in drought-prone areas. For this reason, it is intended to find out the potential of using morphological functional traits of woody species as indicators of dry conditions in the transition zone of the Atlantic Forest. RJ Brazil. Therefore, this work was carried out considering a field phase in a drought prone area known as “Mata de Tabuleiros” or Semideciduous Seasonal Lowland Forest that belongs to the domain of the Mata Atlântica, there were selected morphological traits in order to know which of them can give a hint as drought tolerant traits. On the other side there was searched in the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden JABOT database for species with recorded characteristics related to drought adaptations. For the traits in the field, and the selected species from the database was elaborated a Species Distribution Model SDM in order to know how some climatic variables allow the distribution of species and morphological traits. As main result there was elaborated a set of trait indicators that can be considered for further analysis in the region; and also the results of the SDM obtained at large scale for the Mata Atlântica for the species selected from the database, and the SDM for the traits analyzed in the field in the Mata de Tabuleiros. Besides that, the consultations with experts in the subject were an important input that allowed to carry out this research. The use of morphological and functional traits is important to understand the interactions between organisms and their environment, in this case to cope and tolerate a climate phenomenon like drought.

Even though coffee is self-fertile and therefore does not depend on pollination by honeybees, fruit set and coffee quality can be increased by pollination. As a means of ecological intensification of agriculture, it would even result in a more resilient and sustainable social-ecological system. In Huila, Colombia pollination is not used as an agricultural input for various reasons. Coffee growers are struggling to maintain a profitable business due to constantly low coffee prices and the lack of governmental financial support. As a result, coffee growers apply large quantities of pesticides to minimize the risk of harvest loss. In consequence, beekeepers suffer from high losses among their beehives due to this pesticide overuse in agriculture, leading to mistrust of beekeepers towards farmers and coffee growers in particular. This mistrust combined with coffee growers’ lack of knowledge about the benefits of pollination, prevents the leasing of beehives between these actors. However, this practice would have advantages for coffee growers, through the potential increase of harvest and improvement of coffee quality, as well as for beekeepers through the diversification of income. Coffee growers’ willingness to pay for pollination depends on the actual increase of coffee harvests: For a 15% increase, farmers would be willing to pay an average of 97.80€, for a 30% increase 166.67€ and for a 50% increase 239.28€. The successful introduction of such a scheme requires two measures: firstly, the education of coffee farmers and, secondly, governmental guidelines regarding types, amount and handling of pesticides. Long-term benefits for consist of the reduced application of pesticides, which increases coffee, honey as well as soil quality. Moreover, beekeepers do not suffer such high bee losses anymore.
