3. Confinement-induced field-linked states of ultracold polar molecules

We predict the existence of stable bound states between pairs of ultracold diatomic molecules with the aid of a static electric field and 1D harmonic confinement. We focus on collisions of NaK-NaK identical fermions, for which we find that currently achievable experimental parameters allow the observation of these confinement-induced field-linked bound states as scattering resonances. The bound state is highly stable with lifetimes estimated to be tens of seconds long. With the diatomic molecules bound at distances a fraction of the dipolar length scale, these complexes allow for explorations of polyatomic chemistry and Fermi gas superfluid pairing., Comment: The authors have independently noted limitations of the chosen basis set in describing intermediate-range collisional physics. The constructed adiabatic curves are, therefore, inaccurate at distances below the harmonic oscillator length, so the predicted boundstates are merely numerical features. 4. Simulations of evaporation to deep Fermi degeneracy in microwave-shielded molecules

In the quest toward realizing novel quantum matter in ultracold molecular gases, we perform a numerical study of evaporative cooling in ultracold gases of microwave-shielded polar fermionic molecules. Our Monte Carlo simulations incorporate accurate two-body elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections, realistic modeling of the optical dipole trap, and the influence of Pauli blocking at low temperatures. The simulations are benchmarked against data from evaporation studies performed with ultracold NaK molecules, showing excellent agreement. We further explore the prospects for optimizing the evaporation efficiency by varying the ramp rate and duration of the evaporation trajectory. Our simulation shows that it is possible to reach $< 10\%$ of the Fermi temperature under optimal conditions even in the presence of two-body molecular losses., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

5. Movement of Rehabilitated African Elephant Calves Following Soft Release Into a Wildlife Sanctuary

The ability to locate essential resources is a critical step for wildlife translocated into novel environments. Understanding this process of exploration is highly desirable for management that seeks to resettle wildlife, particularly as translocation projects tend to be expensive and have a high potential for failure. African savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana) are very mobile and rely on large areas especially in arid environments, and are translocated for differing management and conservation objectives. Thus, research into how translocated elephants use the landscape when released may both guide elephant managers and be useful for translocations of other species that adjust their movement to social and ecological conditions. In this study, we investigated the movement of eight GPS tracked calves (translocated in three cohorts) following their soft release into a 107 km2 fenced wildlife sanctuary in northern Kenya and compared their movement with that of five tracked wild elephants in the sanctuary. We describe their exploration of the sanctuary, discovery of water points, and activity budgets during the first seven, 14, and 20 months after release. We explored how patterns are affected by time since release, ecological conditions, and social factors. We found that calves visited new areas of the sanctuary and water points during greener periods and earlier post-release. Social context was associated with exploration, with later release and association with wild elephants predictive of visits to new areas. Wild elephants tended to use a greater number of sites per 14-day period than the released calves. Activity budgets determined from hidden Markov models (including the states directed walk, encamped, and meandering) suggested that released calves differed from wild elephants. The first two cohorts of calves spent a significantly greater proportion of time in the directed walk state and a significantly lower proportion of time in the encamped state relative to the wild elephants. Our results represent a step forward in describing the movements of elephant orphan calves released to the wild following a period of profound social disruption when they lost their natal family and were rehabilitated with other orphan calves under human care. We discuss the implications of the elephant behavior we observed for improving release procedures and for defining success benchmarks for translocation projects.

In mammals, females generally live longer than males. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underpinning sex-dependent longevity are currently unclear. Epigenetic clocks are powerful biological biomarkers capable of precisely estimating chronological age and identifying novel factors influencing the aging rate using only DNA methylation data. In this study, we developed the first epigenetic clock for domesticated sheep (Ovis aries), which can predict chronological age with a median absolute error of 5.1 months. We have discovered that castrated male sheep have a decelerated aging rate compared to intact males, mediated at least in part by the removal of androgens. Furthermore, we identified several androgen-sensitive CpG dinucleotides that become progressively hypomethylated with age in intact males, but remain stable in castrated males and females. Comparable sex-specific methylation differences in MKLN1 also exist in bat skin and a range of mouse tissues that have high androgen receptor expression, indicating that it may drive androgen-dependent hypomethylation in divergent mammalian species. In characterizing these sites, we identify biologically plausible mechanisms explaining how androgens drive male-accelerated aging.

7. Physics-guided weak-form discovery of reduced-order models for trapped ultracold hydrodynamics

We study the relaxation of a highly collisional, ultracold but nondegenerate gas of polar molecules. Confined within a harmonic trap, the gas is subject to fluid-gaseous coupled dynamics that lead to a breakdown of first-order hydrodynamics. An attempt to treat these higher-order hydrodynamic effects was previously made with a Gaussian ansatz and coarse-graining model parameter [R. R. W. Wang & J. L. Bohn, Phys. Rev. A 108, 013322 (2023)], leading to an approximate set of equations for a few collective observables accessible to experiments. Here we present substantially improved reduced-order models for these same observables, admissible beyond previous parameter regimes, discovered directly from particle simulations using the WSINDy algorithm (Weak-form Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics). The interpretable nature of the learning algorithm enables estimation of previously unknown physical quantities and discovery of model terms with candidate physical mechanisms, revealing new physics in mixed collisional regimes. Long-range and anisotropic dipolar interactions profoundly modify the dynamics of particles hopping in a periodic lattice potential. Here, we report the realization of a generalized t-J model with dipolar interactions using a system of ultracold fermionic molecules with spin encoded in the two lowest rotational states. We systematically explore the role of dipolar Ising and spin-exchange couplings and the effect of motion on spin dynamics. The model parameters can be controlled independently, with dipolar couplings tuned by electric fields and motion regulated by optical lattices. Using Ramsey spectroscopy, we observed interaction-driven contrast decay that depends strongly both on the strength of the anisotropy between Ising and spin-exchange couplings and on motion. These observations are supported by theory models established in different motional regimes that provide intuitive pictures of the underlying physics. This study paves the way for future exploration of kinetic spin dynamics and quantum magnetism with highly tunable molecular platforms in regimes challenging for existing numerical and analytical methods, and it could shed light on the complex behaviors observed in real materials.

Abstract A one-pot, direct reductive acetylation of aldehydes was achieved under mild conditions using 1-hydrosilatrane as a safe and easily accessible catalyst. Described herein is a facile synthesis that produces acylated primary alcohols that can serve as valuable building blocks for organic synthesis. The method has good functional group tolerance and works for a range of aryl aldehydes, with the notable exception of electron-rich arenes. A library of esters was isolated by flash chromatography in yields as high as 92%.

10. Prospects for thermalization of microwave-shielded ultracold molecules

We study anisotropic thermalization in dilute gases of microwave shielded polar molecular fermions. For collision energies above the threshold regime, we find that thermalization is suppressed due to a strong preference for forward scattering and a reduction in total cross section with energy, significantly reducing the efficiency of evaporative cooling. We perform close-coupling calculations on the effective potential energy surface derived by Deng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 183001 (2023)], to obtain accurate 2-body elastic differential cross sections across a range of collision energies. We use Gaussian process regression to obtain a global representation of the differential cross section, over a wide range of collision angles and energies. The route to equilibrium is then analyzed with cross-dimensional rethermalization experiments, quantified by a measure of collisional efficiency toward achieving thermalization., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

11. Comparison of Snellen and Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study charts using a computer simulation

AIM: To compare accuracy, reproducibility and test duration for the Snellen and the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) charts, two main tools used to measure visual acuity (VA). METHODS: A computer simulation was programmed to run multiple virtual patients, each with a unique set of assigned parameters, including VA, false-positive and false-negative error values. For each virtual patient, assigned VA was randomly chosen along a continuous scale spanning the range between 1.0 to 0.0 logMAR units (equivalent to 20/200 to 20/20). Each of 30 000 virtual patients were run ten times on each of the two VA charts. RESULTS: Average test duration (expressed as the total number of characters presented during the test ±SD) was 12.6±11.1 and 31.2±14.7 characters, for the Snellen and ETDRS, respectively. Accuracy, defined as the absolute difference (± SD) between the assigned VA and the measured VA, expressed in logMAR units, was superior in the ETDRS charts: 0.12±0.14 and 0.08±0.08, for the Snellen and ETDRS charts, respectively. Reproducibility, expressed as test-retest variability, was superior in the ETDRS charts: 0.23±0.17 and 0.11±0.09 logMAR units, for the Snellen and ETDRS charts, respectively. CONCLUSION: A comparison of true (assigned) VA to measured VA, demonstrated, on average, better accuracy and reproducibility of the ETDRS chart, but at the penalty of significantly longer test duration. These differences were most pronounced in the low VA range. The reproducibility using a simulation approach is in line with reproducibility values found in several clinical studies.

12. Patient-specific anatomical model for deep brain stimulation based on 7 Tesla MRI.

OBJECTIVE:Deep brain stimulation (DBS) requires accurate localization of the anatomical target structure, and the precise placement of the DBS electrode within it. Ultra-high field 7 Tesla (T) MR images can be utilized to create patient-specific anatomical 3D models of the subthalamic nuclei (STN) to enhance pre-surgical DBS targeting as well as post-surgical visualization of the DBS lead position and orientation. We validated the accuracy of the 7T imaging-based patient-specific model of the STN and measured the variability of the location and dimensions across movement disorder patients. METHODS:72 patients who underwent DBS surgery were scanned preoperatively on 7T MRI. Segmentations and 3D volume rendering of the STN were generated for all patients. For 21 STN-DBS cases, microelectrode recording (MER) was used to validate the segmentation. For 12 cases, we computed the correlation between the overlap of the STN and volume of tissue activated (VTA) and the monopolar review for a further validation of the model's accuracy and its clinical relevancy. RESULTS:We successfully reconstructed and visualized the STN in all patients. Significant variability was found across individuals regarding the location of the STN center of mass as well as its volume, length, depth and width. Significant correlations were found between MER and the 7T imaging-based model of the STN (r = 0.86) and VTA-STN overlap and the monopolar review outcome (r = 0.61). CONCLUSION:The results suggest that an accurate visualization and localization of a patient-specific 3D model of the STN can be generated based on 7T MRI. The imaging-based 7T MRI STN model was validated using MER and patient's clinical outcomes. The significant variability observed in the STN location and shape based on a large number of patients emphasizes the importance of an accurate direct visualization of the STN for DBS targeting. An accurate STN localization can facilitate postoperative stimulation parameters for optimized patient outcome.

The probability distribution of the real and imaginary parts of atomic scattering lengths $a$ are derived, in a two-channel model that allows for inelastic scattering to occur. While the real part of $a$ remains Cauchy-distributed, as predicted for single channel scattering in the classic work of Gribakin and Flambaum, the imaginary part of $a$ is seen to be strongly peaked near zero. 15. Viscous damping in weltering motion of trapped hydrodynamic dipolar Fermi gases

We consider collective motion and damping of dipolar Fermi gases in the hydrodynamic regime. We investigate the trajectories of collective oscillations -- here dubbed ``weltering'' motions -- in cross-dimensional rethermalization experiments via Monte Carlo simulations, where we find stark differences from the dilute regime. These observations are interpreted within a semi-empirical theory of viscous hydrodynamics for gases confined to anisotropic harmonic potentials. The derived equations of motion provide a simple effective theory that show favorable agreement with full numerical solutions. To do so, the theory must carefully account for the size and shape of the effective volume within which the gas' behavior is hydrodynamic. The quantum-to-classical correspondence is often quantified in dynamics by a quantity referred to as the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC). In chaotic systems, the OTOC is expected to grow exponentially at early time, characteristic of a Lyapunov exponent, however, exponential growth can also occur for integrable systems. Here we investigate the OTOC for realistic diatomic molecular potentials in one degree of freedom, finding that the OTOC can grow exponentially near the dissociation energy of the moelcule. Further, this dynamics is tied to the classical dynamics of the atoms at the outer classical turning point of the potential. These results should serve to guide and interpret dynamical chaos in more complex molecules.

19. Thermoviscous Hydrodynamics in Non-Degenerate Dipolar Bose Gases

We present a hydrodynamic model of ultracold, but not yet quantum condensed, dipolar Bosonic gases. Such systems present both $s$-wave and dipolar scattering, the latter of which results in anisotropic transport tensors of thermal conductivity and viscosity. This work presents an analytic derivation of the viscosity tensor coefficients, utilizing the methods established in [Wang et al., arXiv:2205.10465], where the thermal conductivities were derived. Taken together, these transport tensors then permit a comprehensive description of hydrodynamics that is now embellished with dipolar anisotropy. An analysis of attenuation in linear waves illustrates the effect of this anisotropy in dipolar fluids, where we find a clear dependence on the dipole orientation relative to the direction of wave propagation., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

20. Thermal Conductivity of an Ultracold Paramagnetic Bose Gas

We analytically derive the transport tensor of thermal conductivity in an ultracold, but not yet quantum degenerate, gas of Bosonic lanthanide atoms using the Chapman-Enskog procedure. The tensor coefficients inherit an anisotropy from the anisotropic collision cross section for these dipolar species, manifest in their dependence on the dipole moment, dipole orientation, and $s$-wave scattering length. These functional dependencies open up a pathway for control of macroscopic gas phenomena via tuning of the microscopic atomic interactions. As an illustrative example, we analyze the time evolution of a temperature hot-spot which shows preferential heat diffusion orthogonal to the dipole orientation, a direct consequence of anisotropic thermal conduction., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

21. Participation in Decision Making as a Property of Complex Adaptive Systems: Developing and Testing a Measure

Objectives. To (1) describe participation in decision-making as a systems-level property of complex adaptive systems and (2) present empirical evidence of reliability and validity of a corresponding measure. Method. Study 1 was a mail survey of a single respondent (administrators or directors of nursing) in each of 197 nursing homes. Study 2 was a field study using random, proportionally stratified sampling procedure that included 195 organizations with 3,968 respondents. Analysis. In Study 1, we analyzed the data to reduce the number of scale items and establish initial reliability and validity. In Study 2, we strengthened the psychometric test using a large sample. Results. Results demonstrated validity and reliability of the participation in decision-making instrument (PDMI) while measuring participation of workers in two distinct job categories (RNs and CNAs). We established reliability at the organizational level aggregated items scores. We established validity of the multidimensional properties using convergent and discriminant validity and confirmatory factor analysis. Conclusions. Participation in decision making, when modeled as a systems-level property of organization, has multiple dimensions and is more complex than is being traditionally measured. Managers can use this model to form decision teams that maximize the depth and breadth of expertise needed and to foster connection among them.

22. Anisotropic thermalization of dilute dipolar gases

We study collisional rethermalization in ultracold dipolar thermal gases, made intricate by their anisotropic differential cross sections. Theoretical methods are provided to derive the number of collisions per rethermalization, which for dipolar gases, is highly dependent on the dipole alignment axis. These methods are formulated to be easily applied in experimental contexts, even reducing to analytic expressions if the route to thermal equilibrium is governed by short-time dynamics. In the analytic case, collisional rethermalization is fully characterized by the dipole magnitude and orientation, scattering length, and thermalization geometry. These models compare favorably to Monte Carlo simulations, and are shown to model well a recent experimental result on the rethermalization of polar molecular samples., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Ultracold polar molecules possess long-range, anisotropic, and tunable dipolar interactions, providing the opportunities to probe quantum phenomena inaccessible with existing cold gas platforms. However, experimental progress has been hindered by the dominance of two-body loss over elastic interactions, which prevents efficient evaporative cooling. Though recent work has demonstrated controlled interactions by confining molecules to a two-dimensional geometry, a general approach for tuning molecular interactions in a three-dimensional (3D), stable system has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate tunable elastic dipolar interactions in a bulk gas of ultracold 40K87Rb molecules in 3D, facilitated by an electric field-induced shielding resonance which suppresses the reactive loss by a factor of thirty. This improvement in the ratio of elastic to inelastic collisions enables direct thermalization. The thermalization rate depends on the angle between the collisional axis and the dipole orientation controlled by an external electric field, a direct manifestation of the anisotropic dipolar interaction. We achieve evaporative cooling mediated by the dipolar interactions in three dimensions. 25. A Method for Tumor Treating Fields Fast Estimation

Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) is an FDA approved treatment for specific types of cancer and significantly extends patients life. The intensity of the TTFields within the tumor was associated with the treatment outcomes: the larger the intensity the longer the patients are likely to survive. Therefore, it was suggested to optimize TTFields transducer array location such that their intensity is maximized. Such optimization requires multiple computations of TTFields in a simulation framework. However, these computations are typically performed using finite element methods or similar approaches that are time consuming. Therefore, only a limited number of transducer array locations can be examined in practice. To overcome this issue, we have developed a method for fast estimation of TTFields intensity. We have designed and implemented a method that inputs a segmentation of the patients head, a table of tissues electrical properties and the location of the transducer array. The method outputs a spatial estimation of the TTFields intensity by incorporating a few relevant parameters in a random-forest regressor. The method was evaluated on 10 patients (20 TA layouts) in a leave-one-out framework. The computation time was 1.5 minutes using the suggested method, and 180-240 minutes using the commercial simulation. The average error was 0.14 V/cm (SD = 0.06 V/cm) in comparison to the result of the commercial simulation. These results suggest that a fast estimation of TTFields based on a few parameters is feasible. The presented method may facilitate treatment optimization and further extend patients life.

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of an ultracold, non-degenerate dipolar gas of $^{164}$Dy atoms in a cylindrically symmetric harmonic trap. To do so, we investigate the normal modes and linear response of the gas when driven by means of periodic modulations to the trap axial-frequency. We find that the resonant response of the gas depends strongly on the dipole alignment axis, owing to anisotropies in the differential cross section of the atoms. We employ the use of the method of averages as well as numerical Monte Carlo methods for our analysis. A striking result is that certain normal modes, termed "melting modes", initiated in an anisotropic out-of-equilibrium configuration, relax to equilibrium without oscillating., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

In mammals, females generally live longer than males. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underpinning sex-dependent longevity are currently unclear. Epigenetic clocks are powerful biological biomarkers capable of precisely estimating chronological age and identifying novel factors influencing the aging rate using only DNA methylation data. In this study, we developed the first epigenetic clock for domesticated sheep (Ovis aries), which can predict chronological age with a median absolute error of 5.1 months. We have discovered that castrated male sheep have a decelerated aging rate compared to intact males, mediated at least in part by the removal of androgens. Furthermore, we identified several androgen-sensitive CpG dinucleotides that become progressively hypomethylated with age in intact males, but remain stable in castrated males and females. Comparable sex-specific methylation differences in MKLN1 also exist in bat skin and a range of mouse tissues that have high androgen receptor expression, indicating that it may drive androgen-dependent hypomethylation in divergent mammalian species. In characterizing these sites, we identify biologically plausible mechanisms explaining how androgens drive male-accelerated aging.

29. Continuous Dice Coefficient: a Method for Evaluating Probabilistic Segmentations

Objective: Overlapping measures are often utilized to quantify the similarity between two binary regions. However, modern segmentation algorithms output a probability or confidence map with continuous values in the zero-to-one interval. Moreover, these binary overlapping measures are biased to structure size. Addressing these challenges is the objective of this work. Methods: We extend the definition of the classical Dice coefficient (DC) overlap to facilitate the direct comparison of a ground truth binary image with a probabilistic map. We call the extended method continuous Dice coefficient (cDC) and show that 1) cDC is less or equal to 1 and cDC = 1 if-and-only-if the structures overlap is complete, and, 2) cDC is monotonically decreasing with the amount of overlap. We compare the classical DC and the cDC in a simulation of partial volume effects that incorporates segmentations of common targets for deep-brainstimulation. Lastly, we investigate the cDC for an automatic segmentation of the subthalamic-nucleus. Results: Partial volume effect simulation on thalamus (large structure) resulted with DC and cDC averages (SD) of 0.98 (0.006) and 0.99 (0.001), respectively. For subthalamic-nucleus (small structure) DC and cDC were 0.86 (0.025) and 0.97 (0.006), respectively. The DC and cDC for automatic STN segmentation were 0.66 and 0.80, respectively. Conclusion: The cDC is well defined for probabilistic segmentation, less biased to structure size and more robust to partial volume effects in comparison to DC. Significance: The proposed method facilitates a better evaluation of segmentation algorithms. As a better measurement tool, it opens the door for the development of better segmentation methods.

Tumor treating fields (TTFields) is an FDA approved therapy for the treatment of Gliobastoma Multiform (GBM) and currently being investigated for additional tumor types. TTFields are delivered to the tumor through the placement of transducer arrays (TAs) placed on the patient scalp. The positions of the TAs are associated with treatment outcomes via simulations of the electric fields. Therefore, we are currently developing a method for recommending optimal placement of TAs. A key step to achieve this goal is to correctly segment the head into tissues of similar electrical properties. Visual inspection of segmentation quality is invaluable but time-consuming. Automatic quality assessment can assist in automatic refinement of the segmentation parameters, suggest flaw points to the user and indicate if the segmented method is of sufficient accuracy for TTFields simulation. As a first step in this direction, we identified a set of features that are relevant to atlas-based segmentation and show that these are significantly correlated (p < 0.05) with a similarity measure between validated and automatically computed segmentations. Furthermore, we incorporated these features in a decision tree regressor to predict the similarity of the validated and computed segmentations of 20 TTFields patients using a leave-one-out approach. The predicted similarity measures were highly correlated with the actual ones (average abs. difference 3% (SD = 3%); r = 0.92, p < 0.001). Nonlinear classical dissipative systems present a rich phenomenology in their "route to chaos", including period-doubling, i.e. the system evolves with a period which is twice that of the driving. However, typically the attractor of a periodically driven quantum open system evolves with a period which exactly matches that of the driving. Here we analyze a manybody open quantum system whose classical correspondent presents period-doubling. We show that by analysing the spectrum of the periodic propagator and by studying the dynamical correlations, it is possible to show the occurrence of period-doubling in the quantum (period-$1$) steady state. We also discuss that such systems are natural candidates for clean Floquet time crystals., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) is an invasive, fruit‐bearing riparian tree that dominates riparian zones of the San Juan River in the southwestern United States. Previous research in this river suggests olive fruit is common in diets of invasive channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), but its energetic importance is unknown (i.e. critical for catfish fitness vs. incidental consumption). We assessed Russian olive consumption in channel catfish diets bimonthly for 1 year, hypothesizing that olive consumption would be greatest during periods of high olive availability and low benthic aquatic invertebrate availability. We found that catfish consumed olive fruit throughout the year and that olive comprised up to 44% of total stomach contents by mass, with peaks in spring and fall. Regression models revealed the presence and mass of olive fruit in catfish stomachs were positively associated with catfish total length, with a significant interaction between water temperature and river discharge. Catfish were more likely to consume olive fruit during higher flows, regardless of temperature and at low discharge with higher temperature. Contrary to our hypothesis, neither olive nor benthic invertebrate availability were associated with olive presence in channel catfish diets. Nutrition analysis indicated that olive alone was a low‐quality diet item but has the potential to provide a reliable energy source. We used seasonal data to estimate the energetic contribution of olive fruit to catfish populations using a bioenergetic model, which estimated that olive fruit accounted for 35.6% of energy (Joules) consumed by catfish populations and satisfied 38% of their metabolic demand. Our results suggest that Russian olive fruit is a significant subsidy to channel catfish in the San Juan River.
