Historical studies have always underlined deep differences in the demography of Southern Italy respect to that of the Northern and Central part of the country. This paper is particularly interested in discovering if nowadays the Southern demographic dynamics are finally comparable with the recent evolution of the North and the Centre of the Peninsula. We examine specifically the different evolutions of mortality, fertility and family formation. The hypothesis is that beneath the similarities shown by the data there are economic and anthropological differences.

We try to investigate the effects of household composition and SES on the reproductive process of married women by comparing some rural and semi-urban populations of northern and central Italy. At the same time, the local economic context will also be accounted for by introducing proxies for short-term variations in prices. Finally, we consider reproduction as a function of the demographic characteristics of each couple, their reproductive history, the structure of the household in which they lived , as well as individual and household responses to epidemics and short-term economic stress. In this way, we will highlight some of the most important variables playing a role in the transition from the natural fertility regime to the onset of the fertility decline.

Prendendo come filo conduttore lo sviluppo sociale e lo stato di salute della popolazione e adottando il punto di vista dei cittadini, il volume offre un quadro delle dinamiche e delle condizioni di benessere in Emilia-Romagna, raccogliendo e analizzando informazioni derivate da differenti fonti secondarie secondo una prospettiva particolarmente attenta alle dinamiche di genere, di cittadinanza e generazionali.

Investigating how qualified human capital is spatially redistributed within a country, and what drives such process in the first place, is essential to understand which regions benefit from its concentration in terms of enhanced productivity and potential for growth. Applying structural equations modelling to the Italian National Institute of Statistics’ (ISTAT) Survey on Educational and Professional Paths of Upper Secondary School Graduates 2011, this paper evaluates the relationship between the propensity to experience interregional student mobility and individual skills in Italy. Findings confirm that the positive link between the two holds also controlling for family background and the characteristics of the region of origin.

Il capitolo presenta i risultati di una ricerca qualitativa condotta tra i giovani lavoratori autonomi emiliano-romagnoli tra il 2015 e il 2017 proponendo la ricostruzione delle storie di cinque giovani coinvolti nella ricerca. Queste sono esemplificative di cinque diversi modi di affrontare la transizione al lavoro autonomo e, dunque, corrispondono ad una sua tipologizzazione. La tipologia di giovani lavoratori autonomi proposta nasce dall’incrocio di due principali dimensioni: il livello di agency dell’intervistato e la valutazione, da parte dello stesso, delle condizioni del mercato del lavoro e, più in generale, della sfera economica. Il capitolo evidenzia come il punto di vista dei giovani intervistati restituisca processi molto variegati, in cui la dimensione della volontà e della propensione personale al lavoro autonomo si intrecciano, in modo di volta in volta differente, con aspetti maggiormente “strutturali”, legati alle condizioni del mercato del lavoro e dell’economia.

Il capitolo si focalizza sulla restituzione dei principali risultati di una ricerca qualitativa condotta tra i giovani lavoratori autonomi emiliano-romagnoli tra il 2015 e il 2017. In particolare, Il capitolo presenta i risultati della ricerca empirica mettendo in luce le condizioni di vita e di lavoro dei giovani intervistati a partire dall’individuazione di cinque dimensioni relative a: • i significati attribuiti dai giovani intervistati alle esperienze lavorative precedenti; • il ruolo delle reti di prossimità (ovvero famiglia, eventuale partner ed amici) nei percorsi e nelle esperienze lavorative dei giovani intervistati; • le competenze e capacità acquisite dai giovani lavoratori autonomi nell’ambito del percorso formativo e le loro idee circa le competenze e/o capacità ritenute importanti per lo svolgimento di un lavoro di tipo autonomo; •gli attori e le condizioni del contesto locale che per vari aspetti si interfac- ciano con la vita del lavoratore autonomo (ad esempio, specifiche figure professionali, enti privati e pubblici a supporto dell’imprenditorialità); •l’individuazione dei principali bisogni e difficoltà e le relative strategie di coping dei giovani intervistati.

Il capitolo si inserisce in un più vasto volume che, raccogliendo e analizzando informazioni de- rivate da differenti fonti secondo una prospettiva particolarmente attenta alle dinamiche di genere, di cittadinanza e generazionali, mira a fornire un quadro analitico delle dinamiche e delle condizioni di benessere in Emilia-Romagna. Il contributo sintetizza le trasformazioni intervenute a modificare lo scenario sociale della regione negli ultimi decenni, soffermandosi sui fenomeni maggiormente rilevanti emersi nei ambiti su cui è concentrata la ricerca: l’evoluzione della popolazione, la formazione delle famiglie, la conciliazione dei tempi quotidiani, le condizioni di salute e gli stili di vita, lo studio e la formazione, il lavoro, la cittadinanza e la partecipazione, la questione della sicurezza, ll’ambiente e la mobilità. Il saggio intende restituire l'accresciuta complessità sociale della realtà emiliano-romagnola emergente dalla ricerca e proporre una riflessione conclusiva rispetto ad essa.

The pattern of longevity in the Italian north-eastern region of Emilia Romagna was investigated at the municipality level, considering a modified version of the centenarian rate (CR) in two different periods (1995-1999 and 2005-2009). Due to the rareness of such events in small areas, spatio-temporal modelling was used to tackle the random variations in the occurrence of long-lived individuals. This approach allowed us to exploit the spatial proximity to smooth the observed data, as well as controlling for the effects of a set of covariates. As a result, clusters of areas characterised by extreme indexes of longevity could be identified and the temporal evolution of the phenomenon depicted. A persistence of areas of lower and higher occurrences of long-lived subjects was observed across time. In particular, mean and median values higher than the regional ones, showed up in areas belonging to the provinces of Ravenna and Forli-Cesena, on one side spreading out along the Adriatic coast and, on the other stretching into the Apennine municipalities of Bologna and Modena. Further, a longitudinal perspective was added by carrying out a spatial analysis including the territorial patterns of past mortality. We evaluated the effects of the structure of mortality on the cohort of long-lived subjects in the second period. The major causes of death were considered in order to deepen the analysis of the observed geographical differences. The circulatory diseases seem to mostly affect the presence of long-lived individuals and a prominent effect of altitude and population density also emerges.

This paper investigate individual characteristic influencing the risk to engage a new relationship after a union disruption for Italians men. In particular, we analyze the transition from first union and the successive one, for both marriage and cohabitation. Among other characteristics we stress on the effect of son on repartnering possibility and territorial differences . Presence of son are mainly investigated in the analysis of women repartnering but we find that also for men children from previous unions induce a decrease on the risk to engage a new relationship. The decreasing effect on the risk estimates show a temporal dependency with stronger relationship for new union beginning more than two year after first disruption. Our tested hypothesis is that temporal dynamics depend on the way man could be considered the “principal actor” in taking the decision of interrupt first union or suffer this decision.

The authors discuss the use of inverse projection to examine population growth in four regions of Italy between 1750 and 1911. Information is included on population and growth rates; life expectancy at birth; crude birth rate; and nuptiality, fertility, and mortality.

"This article is a contribution to the discussion on theories about household formation and marriage in Italy in the 1880s. Based on data [from] the 1881 census, it aims at verifying some hypotheses on the interdependence between marriage behaviour and socio-economic and environmental factors, by using some multivariate statistical techniques. The authors propose a number of indicators and analyse their correlation matrix, before reducing the variables to a few relevant factors which summarize a major part of the available information. Such factors are employed to determine homogeneous areas for marriage behaviour. The family forms found in central and northeastern Italy in the nineteenth century contrasted sharply with those found in the south, with complex forms generally charac terizing the former ureas and nuclear forms predominating in the latter. Early marriage and a neolocal form of household formation prevailed in most of the south, while later marriage and multi-nuclear households were common in the north.
