Background/Objectives: Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by profound physical and psychological transformations, often leading to vulnerabilities such as body dissatisfaction, identity challenges, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. This often leads to body-related psychopathologies, including headaches, restrictive eating disorders, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The present study aimed to describe the typical functioning and features of these conditions and the differences between the three groups, and to identify the most effective assessment for predicting these conditions. Methods: Sixty adolescent patients (51 female; mean age = 15.34 ± 1.80) were divided into three groups: headaches, restrictive eating disorders, and NSSI, and assessed for differences in symptoms, cognitive performance, personality, functioning, and illness severity using semi-structured interviews, clinician-based scales, and performance-based tests like the Rorschach inkblot test, according to the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS). Results: Individuals with headaches experienced more internalizing symptoms, had an average IQ, maintained some functioning areas, and had distorted patterns of self–other relationships with the tendency to project malevolent aspects onto others. Patients with restrictive eating disorders had high levels of depressive symptoms, above-average IQ scores, negative symptoms, moderate presence of obsessive–compulsive personality traits, disorganized thinking, and a tendency to interpret situations subjectively. Patients with NSSI showed the highest level of depressive symptoms and social anxiety symptoms, and a considerable presence of psychotic symptoms and perceptual distortions. Negative symptoms, borderline personality traits, and psychosis symptoms had the strongest predictivity. Conclusions: The study provides clinicians with relevant insights into the features of these conditions and highlights assessment strategies, tailored interventions, and enhanced outcomes for these vulnerable populations. Abstract Background Despite the increasing use of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) as a treatment for eating disorders (EDs), there is little published evidence of its effectiveness for treating restrictive eating disorders. DBT for EDs may be particularly helpful for those who live with severe and enduring eating disorders (SE-EDs) given that it targets those for whom first-line treatments have not been effective, its focus on factors thought to maintain symptoms and its focus on improving quality of life. This study sought to evaluate the experiences of participants in a comprehensive DBT programme for people with SE-EDs. Methods Semistructured interviews were conducted with seven participants who were treated in the ‘DBT for Multidiagnostic Eating Disorders (MED-DBT)’ programme at a regional eating disorders service in New Zealand. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed via thematic analysis. Results The findings indicate that the MED-DBT programme was perceived as effective by participants. The skills learned provided participants with valuable tools that could be used to better manage emotions, crises, and tasks of daily life, which improved their quality of life and improved their management of their eating disorder symptoms. Several participants reported that the programme saved their lives. A key component of the MED-DBT programme was having access to phone coaching that supported participants with the acquisition and consolidation of skills to reduce crises and generalise learning of the skills. These skills have continued to be used by participants more than five years posttreatment. Conclusions The qualitative findings of the present study suggest that the MED-DBT programme is an effective and valuable treatment for participants. All participants endorsed the MED-DBT programme for ED treatment. The treatment programme was seen as a highly beneficial and feasible treatment that could provide greater options for treating complex clients with severe and enduring eating symptomology with confidence.

Plain English summary: People who are living with a long-term eating disorder often experience problems managing their emotions which can negatively impact their quality of life. Treatment options that focus on the eating disorder and don't address the difficulties with managing emotions have had less success for these people. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is an emerging treatment option that focuses on how to better manage emotions and behaviours that impact quality of life, including eating disorders. This study interviewed seven people who attended a DBT programme developed to treat eating disorders (MED-DBT), develop emotion management skills, and help areas of life that may be impacted by these problems. We found that people thought the MED-DBT programme was life-saving and that it helped them to develop skills and improve their quality of life beyond what other treatments had offered. Objective: Few studies have focused on brain structure in atypical anorexia nervosa (atypical AN). This study investigates differences in gray matter volume (GMV) between females with anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical AN, and healthy controls (HC). Method: Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired for 37 AN, 23 atypical AN, and 41 HC female participants. Freesurfer was used to extract GMV, cortical thickness, and surface area for six brain lobes and associated cortical regions of interest (ROI). Primary analyses employed linear mixed‐effects models to compare group differences in lobar GMV, followed by secondary analyses on ROIs within significant lobes. We also explored relationships between cortical gray matter and both body mass index (BMI) and symptom severity. Results: Our primary analyses revealed significant lower GMV in frontal, temporal and parietal areas (FDR <.05) in AN and atypical AN when compared to HC. Lobar GMV comparisons were non‐significant between atypical AN and AN. The parietal lobe exhibited the greatest proportion of affected cortical ROIs in both AN versus HC and atypical AN versus HC. BMI, but not symptom severity, was found to be associated with cortical GMV in the parietal, frontal, temporal, and cingulate lobes. No significant differences were observed in cortical thickness or surface area. Discussion: We observed lower GMV in frontal, temporal, and parietal areas, when compared to HC, but no differences between AN and atypical AN. This indicates potentially overlapping structural phenotypes between these disorders and evidence of brain changes among those who are not below the clinical underweight threshold. Public significance: Despite individuals with atypical anorexia nervosa presenting above the clinical weight threshold, lower cortical gray matter volume was observed in partial, temporal, and frontal cortices, compared to healthy individuals. No significant differences were found in cortical gray matter volume between anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa. This underscores the importance of continuing to assess and target weight gain in clinical care, even for those who are presenting above the low‐weight clinical criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Alexithymia is the inability to identify and describe one’s own emotions. Adolescents who suffer from Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) show a higher prevalence of alexithymia than the general population. Methods The study explored the correlation between levels of alexithymia in mothers, fathers, and adolescents affected by REDs and patients’ ability to recognize their emotions. The study also aimed to evaluate if patients’ emotional distress can significantly impact the severity of their disorder and functioning measured by the Clinical Global Impression Scale - Severity (CGI-S) and the Children’s Global Assessment Scale (CGAS). We enrolled 67 families of adolescents affected by REDs. Parents and patients’ levels of alexithymia were assessed through the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Spearman’s correlation shows a statistically significant correlation between mothers and patients’ levels of alexithymia. Results Our findings also suggest that fathers and mothers’ TAS scores correlate with each other. However, there is no statistically significant relationship between the influence of the TAS scores of fathers and sons/daughters. Conclusions In conclusion, mothers’ level of alexithymia could influence both fathers and patients’ difficulty in identifying and describing their own emotions. This relationship can be investigated further when considering externally oriented thinking. However, the severity of the disease and overall functioning do not appear to be affected by patients’ levels of alexithymia.

Family influence is a crucial factor in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders. Nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI) and restrictive eating disorders (REDs) co‐occur in a significant percentage of subjects but family functioning of these families remains underexplored. This study examines the family functioning perceptions of 80 families with adolescents experiencing RED, comparing those with and without NSSI, alongside a control group, utilising the FACES‐IV assessment. The study also aims to compare the triadic (adolescent–mother–father) perception of family functioning in the three groups. The results reveal distinct family dynamics in adolescents with both RED and NSSI, marked by problematic functioning perceptions from all family members and low parental agreement. A further understanding of the family functioning of adolescents with RED with NSSI can help clinicians in defining the treatment setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The extent to which the recent global COVID-19 Pandemic has impacted young people with restrictive eating disorders [i.e., anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN)] is unclear. We conducted a scoping review of the literature to identify how the pandemic has impacted this population and to identify gaps in the current literature to inform future research efforts. Main body We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, PsycInfo, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, LitCovid, Google Scholar, and relevant agency websites from 2019 to 2022. We included studies that focused on young people with AN/AAN globally. Of the 916 unduplicated articles screened, 17 articles met the inclusion criteria, reporting on 17 unique studies including 4,379 individuals. Three key findings were identified. First, an increase in hospitalizations related to eating disorders was found during COVID-19 among young people with AN and AAN. Multiple studies cited increased medical instability, even though the overall duration of disease was shorter compared to pre-pandemic levels. Second, changes in eating disorder-related symptomology during the pandemic were reported in this population, as well as poorer overall behavioral and mental health. Suggested reasons behind changes included boredom or minimal distraction from pathological thoughts, increased social isolation, increased social media and online use (e.g., reading blogs or watching YouTube), gym and school closures, changes in routines due to lockdowns and quarantines, and worries over gaining the “Quarantine 15”. Third, there was an increase in the use of telemedicine as a treatment modality for the treatment of AN. Challenges were reported by both clinicians and patients regardless of past experience using telemedicine. When compared to no treatment, telemedicine was recognized as the best option during COVID-19 lockdowns; however some individuals expressed the preference for in-person treatment and planned to return to it once it became available. Conclusion The pandemic significantly impacted young people with restrictive eating disorders as seen by increased hospitalizations and requests for outpatient care. A primary driver of the changes in eating disorder symptomatology may be lockdowns and quarantines. Further research investigating how the series of lockdowns and re-openings impacted individuals with AN/AAN is warranted.

Background: This study describes the prevalence of hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and/or hypomagnesemia and resulting electrolyte supplementation during refeeding in severely malnourished youths hospitalized for restrictive eating disorders. Methods: Hospitalized patients between 11-26y (N = 81) at < 75% treatment goal weight (TGW) were assessed through retrospective chart review. Outcomes were compared between participants < 70% TGW and those 70–75% TGW. Nutritional rehabilitation started at 1750 kcals/day and advanced by 500 kcal every other day until target intake was achieved. Associations between %TGW on admission; hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and/or hypomagnesemia; and electrolyte supplementation were examined. Results: Of the 24 (29.6%) participants with hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and/or hypomagnesemia, 7 (8.6%) received supplementation; the remainder corrected without supplementation. Participants < 70% TGW did not differ from those 70–75% TGW on rates of these conditions or need for supplementation. Conclusions: Hospital-based nutritional rehabilitation did not confer increased rates of hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and/or hypomagnesemia or need for electrolyte supplementation in patients < 70% TGW compared to those 70–75% TGW. While additional research is needed to establish clinical practice guidelines on electrolyte management in this population, our findings suggest that nutritional rehabilitation may be reasonably undertaken without prophylactic electrolyte supplementation, even in patients < 70% TGW. Plain English Summary: Identifying safe management methods for nutritional rehabilitation among severely malnourished hospitalized adolescents and young adults with restrictive eating disorders can expedite discharge planning and improve treatment outcomes. In contrast to past studies on inpatient nutritional rehabilitation, this study describes the prevalence and management of multiple-electrolyte disturbance (hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and/or hypomagnesemia) during refeeding among hospitalized severely malnourished youths with restrictive eating disorders. We found that in this population, with experienced, close medical supervision, nutritional rehabilitation may be reasonably undertaken without prophylactic electrolyte supplementation, even in patients < 70% goal treatment weight. These findings can inform hospital-based refeeding protocols for adolescents and young adults with restrictive eating disorders, where the practice around prophylactic supplementation is variable. Objective: Within the eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD‐11), diagnostic criteria for feeding and eating disorders were revised and new diagnoses including avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) are classifiable; however, nothing is known about how these changes affect the prevalence of feeding and eating disorders. This study compared the distribution and clinical characteristics of restrictive feeding and eating disorders between ICD‐10 and ICD‐11. Method: The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE), its child version, and the EDE ARFID module were administered to N = 82 patients (0–17 years) seeking treatment for restrictive feeding and eating disorders and their parents. Clinical characteristics were derived from medical records, questionnaires, and objective anthropometrics. Results: The number of residual restrictive eating disorders (rrED) significantly decreased from ICD‐10 to ICD‐11 due to a crossover to full‐threshold disorders, especially anorexia nervosa (AN) or ARFID. Patients reclassified to ICD‐11 ARFID were younger, had an earlier age of illness onset, more restrictive eating behaviors, and tended to have more somatic comorbidities compared to those reclassified to ICD‐11 AN. Patients with rrED according to both ICD‐10 and ICD‐11 were younger, had an earlier age of illness onset, less shape concern, and more somatic comorbidities than patients who were reclassified from ICD‐10 rrED to ICD‐11 AN or ARFID. Discussion: This study highlights the inclusive approach of ICD‐11 criteria, paving the way for more targeted treatment, and ARFID's high clinical relevance. Future studies considering nonrestrictive feeding and eating disorders across the life span may allow further analyses on diagnostic crossover. Public Significance: Changes in diagnostic criteria for restrictive eating disorders within the newly published ICD‐11 led to an increase in full‐threshold disorders, while the number of rrED was significantly lowered compared to ICD‐10 criteria. Life events (traumatic and protective) may be critical factors associated with eating disorders and their severity. To date, there is little literature concerning the role of life events in adolescence. The main goal of this study was to explore in a sample of adolescent patients with restrictive eating disorders (REDs) the presence of life events in the year before enrolment and to characterize them according to timing. Furthermore, we investigated correlations between REDs severity and the presence of life events. In total, 33 adolescents completed the EDI-3 questionnaire to assess RED severity using EDRC (Eating Disorder Risk Composite), GPMC (General Psychological Maladjustment Composite), and the Coddington Life Events Scales—Adolescent (CLES-A) questionnaires to define the presence of life events in the last year. Of these, 87.88% reported a life event in the past year. A significant association emerged between elevated clinical GPMC and the presence of traumatic events: patients who had experienced at least one traumatic life event in the year before enrolment presented higher clinically elevated GPMC compared to patients who had not. These results suggest that obtaining early information about traumatic events in clinical practice may help prevent the occurrence of new events and improve patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The quality of family interactions may be a critical factor for restrictive eating disorders (REDs). Adolescent patients with RED have interpersonal problems that can be inferred by observing their behaviours during family interactions. To date, the assessment of the association among RED severity, interpersonal problems, and patients' interactive behaviours in the family is partially explored. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore how adolescent patients' interactive behaviours observed during the Lausanne Trilogue Play—clinical version (LTPc) were associated with both RED severity and interpersonal problems. Sixty adolescent patients completed the EDI-3 questionnaire to assess RED severity using the Eating Disorder Risk Composite (EDRC) and Interpersonal Problems Composite (IPC) subscales. Moreover, patients and their parents took part in the LTPc, and patients' interactive behaviours were coded as participation, organization, focal attention, and affective contact in all the LTPc four phases. A significant association emerged between patients' interactive behaviours during the LTPc triadic phase and both EDRC and IPC. Better patients' organization and affective contact significantly correlated with lower RED severity and fewer interpersonal problems. These findings suggest that investigating the quality of family relationships and patients' interactive behaviours may contribute to better identifying adolescent patients at risk for more severe conditions. Adolescents diagnosed with Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) are at risk for alexithymia. REDs patients' families show dysfunctional interactive patterns, and childhood family environment influences alexithymia development. We aimed to assess the relationship between family dysfunctional interactive patterns and patients' alexithymia in a sample of adolescents diagnosed with REDs. Forty-five patients and their parents were enrolled. They participated in the clinical version of the Lausanne Triadic Play (LTPc), a standardized observational procedure to assess family functioning. We used the self-report questionnaire Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) to assess patients' alexithymia. The TAS-20 provides a multi-factorial measure of patients' alexithymia: Difficulty in Identifying Feelings, DIF; Difficulty in Describing Feelings, DDF; Externally-oriented Thinking, EOT) and a total (TOT) score. DDF and EOT scores were significantly higher than DIF score. Patients' families showed dysfunctional interactive patterns, with a predominance of collusive alliance. Patients from families characterized by collusive alliance had higher TOT scores compared to counterparts from families exhibiting a different interactive dysfunctional pattern. In families characterized by a collusive triadic alliance, the dysfunctional interactive pattern was linked with the risk of alexithymia in patients with REDs. Introduction Previous studies applying the Lausanne Trilogue Play (LTPc), a semi-structured method for observing family dynamics, highlighted dysfunctional interaction patterns in the families of individuals affected by restrictive eating disorders (REDs). Family-centered approaches are considered the first-line treatment for severe cases of REDs in adolescence. Objectives To investigate family functioning in the families of adolescents with severe REDs assessed before and 6 months after a multidisciplinary family treatment program that combined psychodynamic psychotherapy, parental role intervention and triadic or family-centered intervention. Methods Sixty-seven families of adolescent patients diagnosed with REDs were assessed for eligibility between July 2017 and October 2020. Family functioning was assessed using the clinical version of LTPc. Nutritional counseling and neuropsychiatric monitoring were also provided. Results We observed a significant change in the family functioning score for the LTPc phase 2, in which the father interacts with his daughter while the mother acts as a silent observer. This suggests that the fathers, when playing an active role, could improve dyadic family functioning. The treatment was not found to change triadic functioning: a 6-month treatment may not be long enough to modify interactions at the triadic level. Conclusions A brief multidisciplinary treatment program may significantly improve family functioning in the families of patients diagnosed with severe REDs. Although appropriate clinical trials are needed to further test the efficacy of this treatment, our study reinforce the concept that treatment programs targeting the individual patient and both the parents should be a first-line approach in adolescents with severe REDs. In total, 33 adolescents completed the EDI-3 questionnaire to assess RED severity using EDRC (Eating Disorder Risk Composite), GPMC (General Psychological Maladjustment Composite), and the Coddington Life Events Scales—Adolescent (CLES-A) questionnaires to define the presence of life events in the last year. Of these, 87.88% reported a life event in the past year. A significant association emerged between elevated clinical GPMC and the presence of traumatic events: patients who had experienced at least one traumatic life event in the year before enrolment presented higher clinically elevated GPMC compared to patients who had not. These results suggest that obtaining early information about traumatic events in clinical practice may help prevent the occurrence of new events and improve patient outcomes.

Adolescents diagnosed with Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) are at risk for alexithymia. REDs patients’ families show dysfunctional interactive patterns, and childhood family environment influences alexithymia development. We aimed to assess the relationship between family dysfunctional interactive patterns and patients’ alexithymia in a sample of adolescents diagnosed with REDs. Forty-five patients and their parents were enrolled. They participated in the clinical version of the Lausanne Triadic Play (LTPc), a standardized observational procedure to assess family functioning. We used the self-report questionnaire Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) to assess patients’ alexithymia. The TAS-20 provides a multi-factorial measure of patients’ alexithymia: Difficulty in Identifying Feelings, DIF; Difficulty in Describing Feelings, DDF; Externally-oriented Thinking, EOT) and a total (TOT) score. DDF and EOT scores were significantly higher than DIF score. Patients’ families showed dysfunctional interactive patterns, with a predominance of collusive alliance. Patients from families characterized by collusive alliance had higher TOT scores compared to counterparts from families exhibiting a different interactive dysfunctional pattern. In families characterized by a collusive triadic alliance, the dysfunctional interactive pattern was linked with the risk of alexithymia in patients with REDs. Assessment of family relationships should be included in the routine consultation with adolescent patients affected by REDs.

The focus of medical hospitalization for restrictive eating disorders is weight gain; however, no guidelines exist on how to achieve successful and safe weight gain. Meal supervision may be a supportive intervention to aid in meal completion and weight gain. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of standardized meal supervision on weight gain, length of stay, vital signs, electrolytes, and use of liquid caloric supplementation in hospitalized adolescents and young adults with restrictive eating disorders. A chart review compared patients who received meal supervision from admission through discharge to an earlier cohort who received meal supervision as needed. There were no differences in weight, electrolytes, or vital signs between the two cohorts. Length of stay for those who received meal supervision from admission was 3 days shorter than earlier cohort. Purpose Psychopharmacologic medications are often prescribed to patients with restrictive eating disorders (EDs), and little is known about the frequency of use in adolescents. We examined the use of psychopharmacologic medications in adolescents referred for treatment of restrictive ED, potential factors associated with their use, and reported psychiatric comorbidities. Methods Retrospective data from the initial and 1-year visits were collected for patients referred for evaluation of restrictive ED at 12 adolescent-based ED programs during 2010 (Group 1), including diagnosis, demographic information, body mass index, prior treatment modalities, and psychopharmacologic medications. Additional data regarding patients' comorbid psychiatric conditions and classes of psychopharmacologic medications were obtained from six sites (Group 2). Results Overall, 635 patients met inclusion criteria and 359 had 1-year follow-up (Group 1). At intake, 20.4% of Group 1 was taking psychopharmacologic medication and 58.7% at 1 year ( p ≤ .0001). White, non-Hispanic race ( p = .020), and prior higher level of care ( p < .0001) were positively associated with medication use at 1 year. Among Group 2 (n = 256), serotonin reuptake inhibitors/serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors use was most common, and 62.6% had a reported psychiatric comorbidity. Presence of any psychiatric comorbidity was highly associated with medication use; odds ratio, 10.0 (5.6, 18.0). Conclusions Adolescents with restrictive ED treated at referral centers have high rates of reported psychopharmacologic medication use and psychiatric comorbidity. As more than half of this referral population were reported to be taking medication, continued investigation is warranted to ensure the desired outcomes of the medications are being met. Objectives: Anorexia nervosa is a chronic, life-threatening illness affecting adolescents with increasing incidence. Previous research has demonstrated that, although weight gain is a key to medical stabilization, there is wide and significant variability in treatment practices. Meal supervision in hospitalized patients involves the use of clinical staff as active and supportive observers during meal time. No studies to date have examined the effects of meal supervision in medically hospitalized patients with anorexia nervosa. The primary aim of this study was to examine the effect of meal supervision on outcomes during inpatient medical hospitalization. Methods: A retrospective record review of 52 patients with restrictive eating disorders admitted to a tertiary pediatric hospital from July 2008 to July 2009 was conducted. Results: The data revealed higher average weights and improved overnight heart rate trends for patients who received at least 1 supervised meal during hospitalization compared with those who received no supervised meals. Forty-eight female adolescents with RED filled in the Youth Self-Report, their mothers and fathers separately completed the Child Behavior Check List. Patients reported lower scores for somatic complaints, thought problems, and rule-breaking behaviors compared to their mothers and fathers. Background: This study aimed to evaluate several socio-demographic and long-term clinical outcomes in a cohort of women living with a restrictive eating disorder. Methods: Patients were asked to fill in a general data collection form aiming to investigate their current conditions and to attend the outpatient unit for a 10-year follow-up clinical and laboratory evaluation. Results: Forty-four patients completed the follow-up general data collection form and 20 agreed to attend the outpatient unit for the 10 year-follow-up evaluation. In total, 52% of patients were single, 55% had achieved a university degree, and 55% had steady employment. After 10 years, there was a clear improvement in biochemical markers, but cholesterol levels were still slightly high. The prevalence of osteopenia in the whole sample was 70% when measured on the lumbar column and 20% on the total body, while osteoporosis was found in 10% of patients and only on the lumbar column. Conclusion: According to the collected data, women with a history of restrictive eating disorders appear to re-adapt well to social life by obtaining the level of their unaffected peers in terms of education and employment. Introduction: Little is known about the efficacy and safety of forced tube feeding in patients with life-threatening anorexia nervosa. Our aim is to investigate weight gain and complications during forced treatment in anorectic patients with a BMI < 13 kg/m2. Objectives: Anorexia nervosa is a serious psychiatric condition with high mortality rates. When health becomes seriously endangered and the patient refuses to take necessary foods, involuntarily treatment is sometimes necessary to prevent serious morbidity and mortality. However, little is known about functional outcomes and complications. Methods: 12 patients with serious anorexia nervosa (BMI < 13), somatic complications and not able to take sufficient nutrients on a voluntarily basis received forced tube feeding under the Dutch mental health act. Weight was measured three times a week and weight targets and nutrition policy were determined accordingly. When patients reached the intended BMI, they were motivated to continue tube feeding on a voluntary basis and oral intake was introduced. Results: During hospitalization all patients were able to gain the weight necessary to complete the treatment plan. Complications during treatment were hypothermia, pneumonia, hypoglycemia and intensieve care admission. After discharge at least two of the patients died. Factors relevant to positive outcome were a short duration of illness and a younger age. Conclusions: Forced feeding in life-threatening anorexia nervosa is somatically safe, feasible and results in weight gain. On the short term it is life-saving. Further research should focus on the longer term effects of compulsory treatment and identify patient characteristics that predict chances to profit by forced feeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively newly introduced diagnostic category within the feeding and eating disorders. This article summarizes current knowledge and clinical practice relating to ARFID in youth. It discusses epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical assessment, treatment interventions, prognosis, and outcome. Gaps in the existing research literature are highlighted, promising avenues of current research signposted, and potentially useful future directions proposed.
