Abstract

International audience; Introduction. - Interpretative phenomenological analysis is a qualitative discourse analysis method that has sprung up much research in psychology over the past 20 years. Grounded in phenomenology, idiography and hermeneutics, this research strategy strongly suits the understanding of individuals lived experience and their sense making of life events. Objective. - This paper aims at offering a practical illustration of IPA based on a psychosocial study regarding difficult medical decisions in oncology. Results. - Applied to the case of a surgeon, the different steps of IPA were useful to shed light on the interpersonal (relationships with patients) and social (expectations due to the physician's medical speciality) dynamics at stake in the complex experience of this professional practice. Conclusion. - IPA is a fruitful methodological tool for revealing the psychosocial dynamics of behaviour and offering a psychosocial interpretation of their meaning from an individual's point of view. Abstract

The brain cytoplasmic (BC1) RNA is a non-coding RNA (ncRNA) involved in neuronal translational control. Absence of BC1 is associated with altered glutamatergic transmission and maladaptive behavior. Here, we show that pyramidal neurons in the barrel cortex of BC1 knock out (KO) mice display larger excitatory postsynaptic currents and increased spontaneous activity in vivo. Furthermore, BC1 KO mice have enlarged spine heads and postsynaptic densities and increased synaptic levels of glutamate receptors and PSD-95. Of note, BC1 KO mice show aberrant structural plasticity in response to whisker deprivation, impaired texture novel object recognition and altered social behavior. Thus, our study highlights a role for BC1 RNA in experience-dependent plasticity and learning in the mammalian adult neocortex, and provides insight into the function of brain ncRNAs regulating synaptic transmission, plasticity and behavior, with potential relevance in the context of intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disorders.Brain cytoplasmic (BC1) RNA is a non-coding RNA that has been implicated in translational regulation, seizure, and anxiety. Here, the authors show that in the cortex, BC1 RNA is required for sensory deprivation-induced structural plasticity of dendritic spines, as well as for correct sensory learning and social behaviors.

Abstract

Objectives: HCV and NAFLD are associated with atherosclerosis in general population. The prevalence of atherosclerosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients is unknown. We hypothesized that HCV per se and HCV-related steatosis could favour atherosclerosis. Thus, in CHC patients we assessed: (a) the prevalence of atherosclerosis; (b) the role of HCV, cardio-metabolic risk factors and hepatic histology. Methods: Overall, 803 subjects were enrolled: (A) 326 patients with liver biopsy-proven treatment naive CHC (175 with and 151 without steatosis); (B) 477 age and gender matched controls, including 292 healthy subjects without steatosis (B1) and 185 with NAFLD (B2). Carotid atherosclerosis (CA), assessed by high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, was categorized as either intima-media thickness (IMT: >1 mm) or plaques (≥1.5 mm). Aim. Previous studies have demonstrated a link between HCV infection and increased risk of atherosclerosis and a possible role of HCV in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Methods. In the present study we investigated the prevalence of carotid-artery plaque and carotid intimamedia thickening by US, B mode in 84 patients with chronic hepatitis C. We correlate carotid intima-media thickening with the presence or absence of liver steatosis, insulin resistance, and HCV genotype. Results. Abstract

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine the incidence of luetic uveitis in the last seven years at our uveitis center and to describe the characteristics and the role of uveitis in the diagnosis of syphilitic infection with or without unknown HIV infection. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed syphilitic uveitis in patients observed at our center between 2004 and 2010. The diagnosis was based on the serological evidence for syphilis, uveitis, exclusion of other etiologies. All patients had HIV testing. RESULTS: We describe 14 new cases of luetic uveitis: 6 co-infected with previously unknown HIV-infection had panuveitis, while the most common presentation in HIV-negative patients was posterior uveitis. CONCLUSIONS: Syphilis has been recognized as reemerging disease. The ocular inflammation can be the first symptom of syphilis. This study underlines the importance of a prompt and correct diagnosis of this ocular disease.

Abstract

Background: The present study aims to assess qualitative and quantitative characteristics of tear film and corneal related impairment and to evaluate the quality of life in a cohort of non-exophthalmic Graves' disease (GD) patients.Methods: The series comprised 50 eyes from 25 newly diagnosed GD patients with no proptosis. As control group, 56 eyes of 28 thyroid disease-free subjects were enrolled.Results: The results of Schirmer I and II, break-up time, and Oxford scheme showed a significant difference between GD and controls. By ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, eleven (44%) GD patients had normal ocular surface, while two (8%) had mild, four (16%) had moderate, and eight (32%) had severe dry eye. The mean score of the OSDI in the GD group was significantly (p < 0.001) higher with respect to the control group.Conclusions: This study shows that the tear film and cornea are damaged in newly non-exophthalmic GD subjects.
