The interaction of fast charged particles with graphene layers can generate electromagnetic modes. This wake effect has been recently proposed for short-wavelength, high-gradient particle acceleration and for obtaining brilliant radiation sources. In this study, the excitation of wakefields produced by a point-like charged particle moving parallel to a multilayer graphene array (which may be supported by an insulated substrate) is studied using the linearized hydrodynamic theory. General expressions for the excited longitudinal and transverse wakefields have been derived. The dependencies of the wakefields on the positions of the layers and the substrate, the velocity and the surface density have been extensively analyzed. This study provides a deeper understanding of the physical phenomena underlying plasmonic excitations in graphene layers, paving the way for potential applications of these structures in particle acceleration, nanotechnology and materials science.

While laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) in the bubble regime demands ultra-short, high-peak-power laser pulses, operation in the self-modulated regime (SM-LWFA) works with more relaxed pulse conditions, albeit at the cost of lower beam quality. Modern laser systems can deliver pulses with durations of a few tens of femtoseconds and peak powers on the order of a few terawatts, at kHz repetition rates. These systems are well-suited for developing SM-LWFA applications where high average energy and charge are prioritized over beam quality. Such beams could be used to generate high-energy bremsstrahlung photons, capable of triggering photonuclear reactions to produce radioisotopes like molybdenum-99. This isotope decays into technetium-99m, the most widely used medical radioisotope, with over 30 million applications worldwide per year. This work explores the use of Bayesian optimization to maximize the energy and charge of electron beams accelerated via SM-LWFA. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations model a 5 TW, 15 fs-long Gaussian laser pulse, propagating through tailored hydrogen gas-density profiles. In these simulations, over multiple iterations, the algorithm optimizes a set of input parameters characterizing the gas-density profile and the laser focal position. Three distinct profiles, with total lengths ranging from 200 to 400 micrometers and combining ramps and plateaus, were investigated. Optimal configurations were found to produce electron beams with median energies ranging from 14 to 17 MeV and charges of 600 to 1300 pC, considering electrons with energies above 8 MeV. Preliminary estimates of the molybdenum-99 yields for the optimal beams were obtained by employing their phase spaces, retrieved from PIC simulations, as radiation source inputs in Monte Carlo simulations irradiating a combined tantalum and molybdenum target., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures

Since their inception, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors have been enabling quantum optical applications and the rise of the photonic quantum industry. The evolution in the detector design and read-out strategies has led to the introduction of devices with a plurality of independent pixels, which have been able to operate with high system detection efficiency at high speed while also supporting photon number resolution capabilities. However, this comes at the cost of a complex readout that requires one coaxial cable for each pixel of the array. Here, we report a 28-pixel SNSPD with a dedicated parallel architecture that, while maintaining a simple readout with a single coaxial line, enables the detector to operate at high speed with low-performance degradation. The device shows a maximum single-photon efficiency of 88% and is able to maintain its efficiency above 50%, coupled with a timing jitter lower than 80 ps, up to a detection rate of 200 million counts per second. The detector also provides state-of-the-art photon-number-resolving performances with a 2-photon efficiency of 75% and a 3-photon efficiency of 62%.

Gallium phosphide (GaP) has recently received considerable attention as a suitable material for building photonic integrated circuits due to its remarkable optical and piezoelectric properties. Usually, GaP is grown epitaxially on III-V substrates to keep its crystallinity and later transferred to silicon wafers for further processing. Here, an alternative promising route for the fabrication of optomechanical (OM) cavities on GaP epitaxially grown on nominally (001)-oriented Si is introduced by using a two-step process consisting of a low-temperature etching of GaP followed by selective etching of the underneath silicon. The low-temperature (-30 $^o$C) during the dry-etching of GaP hinders the lateral etching rate, preserving the pattern with a deviation between the design and the pattern in the GaP layer lower than 5 %, avoiding the complex process of transferring and bonding a GaP wafer to a silicon-on-insulator wafer. To demonstrate the quality and feasibility of the proposed fabrication route, suspended OM cavities are fabricated and experimentally characterized. The cavities show optical quality factors between 10$^3$ and 10$^4$, and localized mechanical resonances at frequencies around 3.1 GHz. Both optical and mechanical resonances are close to those previously reported on crystalline GaP structures. Modern Neural Machine Translation systems exhibit strong performance in several different languages and are constantly improving. Their ability to learn continuously is, however, still severely limited by the catastrophic forgetting issue. In this work, we leverage a key property of encoder-decoder Transformers, i.e. their generative ability, to propose a novel approach to continually learning Neural Machine Translation systems. We show how this can effectively learn on a stream of experiences comprising different languages, by leveraging a replay memory populated by using the model itself as a generator of parallel sentences. We empirically demonstrate that our approach can counteract catastrophic forgetting without requiring explicit memorization of training data. Code will be publicly available upon publication. The electric field of light induces--in a non centrosymmetric insulator--a dc current, quadratic in the field magnitude, and called "shift current". When addressed from a many-electron viewpoint, the shift current has a simple explanation and a simple formulation as well, deeply rooted in quantum geometry. The basic formula is then specialized to the independent-electron case, first for a disordered system in a supercell formulation, and then for a crystalline system. The interactions of charged particles moving paraxially in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) may excite electromagnetic modes. This wake effect has recently been proposed as a potential novel method of short-wavelength high-gradient particle acceleration. In this work, the excitation of wakefields in double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) is studied by means of the linearized hydrodynamic theory. General expressions have been derived for the excited longitudinal and transverse wakefields and related to the resonant wavenumbers which can be obtained from the dispersion relation. In the absence of friction, the stopping power of the wakefield driver, modelled here as a charged macroparticle, can be written solely as a function of these resonant wavenumbers. The dependencies of the wakefields on the radii of the DWCNT and the driving velocity have been studied. A sharp definition of what "adiabatic" means is given; it is then shown that the time-dependent expectation value of a quantum-mechanical observable in the adiabatic limit can be expressed -- in many cases -- by means of the appropriate Berry curvature. Condensed-matter observables belonging to this class include: Born effective charges in insulators and in metals, quantized Faraday charges in electrolytes, and linear dc conductivities (longitudinal and transverse). Remarkably, the adiabatic limit is well defined even in metals, despite the absence of a spectral gap therein. For all of the above observables the explicit Berry-curvature expressions are derived in a general many-body setting, which also allows for compact and very transparent notations and formulas. The interactions of charged particles with carbon nanotubes may excite electromagnetic modes in the electron gas produced in the cylindrical graphene shell constituting the nanotube wall. This wake effect has recently been proposed as a potential novel method of short-wavelength high-gradient particle acceleration. In this work, the excitation of these wakefields is studied by means of the linearized hydrodynamic model. In this model, the electronic excitations on the nanotube surface are described treating the electron gas as a 2D plasma with additional contributions to the fluid momentum equation from specific solid-state properties of the gas. General expressions are derived for the excited longitudinal and transverse wakefields. Numerical results are obtained for a charged particle moving within a carbon nanotube, paraxially to its axis, showing how the wakefield is affected by parameters such as the particle velocity and its radial position, the nanotube radius, and a friction factor, which can be used as a phenomenological parameter to describe effects from the ionic lattice. Assuming a particle driver propagating on axis at a given velocity, optimal parameters were obtained to maximize the longitudinal wakefield amplitude.

Superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have enabled the realization of several quantum optics technologies thanks to their high detection efficiency, low dark-counts, and fast recovery time. However, the widespread use of technologies such as linear optical quantum computing (LOQC), quasi-deterministic single photon sources and quantum repeaters requires faster detectors that can distinguish between different photon number states. Here, we report the fabrication of an SNSPD array composed of 14 independent pixels, achieving a system detection efficiency (SDE) of 90% in the telecom band. By reading each pixel of the array independently we show that the detector can detect telecom photons at 1.5 GHz with 45% absolute SDE. We exploit the dynamic PNR of the array to demonstrate accurate state reconstruction for different photon-number statistics for a wide range of light inputs, including operation with long-duration light pulses, as commonly obtained with some cavity-based sources. We show 2-photon and 3-photon fidelities of 74% and 57% respectively, which represent state-of-the-art results for fiber-coupled SNSPDs.

Adiabatic transport in a many-electron system is expressed in terms of the appropriate Berry curvature, owing to the Niu-Thouless theory [J. Phys A {\bf 17}, 2453 (1984)]; the main equation is very compact and very general. Neuroscience is moving towards a more integrative discipline, where understanding brain function requires consolidating the accumulated evidence seen across experiments, species, and measurement techniques. A remaining challenge on that path is integrating such heterogeneous data into analysis workflows such that consistent and comparable conclusions can be distilled as an experimental basis for models and theories. Here, we propose a solution in the context of slow wave activity ($<1$ Hz), which occurs during unconscious brain states like sleep and general anesthesia, and is observed across diverse experimental approaches. We address the issue of integrating and comparing heterogeneous data by conceptualizing a general pipeline design that is adaptable to a variety of inputs and applications. Furthermore, we present the Collaborative Brain Wave Analysis Pipeline (Cobrawap) as a concrete, reusable software implementation to perform broad, detailed, and rigorous comparisons of slow wave characteristics across multiple, openly available ECoG and calcium imaging datasets.

Quantum Key Distribution has made continuous progress over the last 20 years and is now commercially available. However, the secret key rates (SKR) are still limited to a few Mbps. Here, we present a custom multipixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and fast acquisition and real-time key distillation electronics, removing two roadblocks and allowing an increase of the SKR of more than an order of magnitude. Charged particle acceleration using solid-state nanostructures has attracted attention in recent years as a method of achieving ultra-high-gradient acceleration in the TV/m domain. More concretely, metallic hollow nanostructures could be suitable for particle acceleration through the excitation of wakefields by a laser or a high-intensity charged particle beam in a high-density solid-state plasma. For instance, due to their special channelling properties as well as optoelectronic and thermo-mechanical properties, carbon nanotubes could be an excellent medium for this purpose. This article investigates the feasibility of generating ultra-high gradient acceleration using carbon nanotube arrays, modelled as solid-state plasmas in conventional particle-in-cell simulations performed in a two-dimensional axisymmetric quasi}-3D geometry. The generation of beam-driven plasma wakefields depending on different parameters of the solid structure is discussed in detail. Two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMM) are significant for studies on the nature of 2D long range magnetic order but also for future spintronic devices. Of particular interest are 2DMM where spins can be manipulated by electrical conduction. Whereas Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ exhibits magnetic order in few-layer crystals, its large band gap inhibits electronic conduction. Here we show that the defect-induced short-range crystal order in Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ on the length scale below 0.6 nm induces substantially reduced band gap and robust semiconducting behavior down to 2 K that turns to metallic above 10 GPa. Our results will be helpful to design conducting state in 2DMM and call for spin-resolved measurement of the electronic structure in exfoliated ultrathin crystals.

Particle accelerators have enabled forefront research in high energy physics and other research areas for more than half a century. Accelerators have directly contributed to 26 Nobel Prizes in Physics since 1939 as well as another 20 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Medicine and Physics with X-rays. Although high energy physics has been the main driving force for the development of the particle accelerators, accelerator facilities have continually been expanding applications in many areas of research and technology. For instance, active areas of accelerator applications include radiotherapy to treat cancer, production of short-lived medical isotopes, synchrotron light sources, free-electron lasers, beam lithography for microcircuits, thin-film technology and radiation processing of food. Currently, the largest and most powerful accelerator is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which accelerates protons to multi-TeV energies in a 27 km high-vacuum ring. To go beyond the maximum capabilities of the LHC, the next generation of circular and linear particle colliders under consideration, based on radiofrequency acceleration, will require multi-billion investment, kilometric infrastructure and a massive power consumption. These factors pose serious challenges in an increasingly resource-limited world. Therefore, it is important to look for alternative and sustainable acceleration techniques. Plasmonic modes offer the potential to achieve PetaVolts per meter fields, that would transform the current paradigm in collider development in addition to non-collider searches in fundamental physics. PetaVolts per meter plasmonics relies on collective oscillations of the free electron Fermi gas inherent in the conduction band of materials that have a suitable combination of constituent atoms and ionic lattice structure. As the conduction band free electron density, at equilibrium, can be as high as $\rm 10^{24}cm^{-3}$, electromagnetic fields of the order of $\rm 0.1 \sqrt{\rm n_0(10^{24}cm^{-3})} ~ PVm^{-1}$ can be sustained by plasmonic modes. Engineered materials not only allow highly tunable material properties but quite critically make it possible to overcome disruptive instabilities that dominate the interactions in bulk media. Due to rapid shielding by the free electron Fermi gas, dielectric effects are strongly suppressed. Because the ionic lattice, the corresponding electronic energy bands and the free electron gas are governed by quantum mechanical effects, comparisons with plasmas are merely notional. Based on this framework, it is critical to address various challenges that underlie PetaVolts per meter plasmonics including stable excitation of plasmonic modes while accounting for their effects on the ionic lattice and the electronic energy band structure over femtosecond timescales. We summarize the ongoing theoretical and experimental efforts as well as map out strategies for the future. Extreme plasmonic fields can shape the future by not only bringing tens of TeV to multi-PeV center-of-mass-energies within reach but also by opening novel pathways in non-collider HEP. In view of this promise, we invite the scientific community to help realize the immense potential of PV/m plasmonics and call for significant expansion of the US and international R\&D program., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Kohn's theory of Drude conductivity, established in a many-body framework, addresses even systems with disorder and correlation, besides the ordinary band metals (i.e. crystalline systems of independent electrons). Kohn's theory is here extended to nonlinear dc conductivities of arbitrary order, longitudinal and transverse. Unlike silicene, for which the demonstration of its existence has been done through numerous independent studies, the possibility of growing epitaxial germanene remains highly controversial. It has been recently shown by scanning tunneling microscopy that the (3 x 3) surface reconstruction formed upon Ge deposition on Al(111) presents a honeycomb structure, and it was assigned to a pure germanene monolayer. Using quantitative measurements by surface X-ray diffraction compared to density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that this Ge/Al(111) (3 x 3) reconstruction corresponds, in fact, to a mixed Ge--Al honeycomb layer on top of an alloyed interfacial layer. The model of a germanene monolayer on top of the Al(111) surface can be completely excluded.

Charged particle therapy (CPT) is an advanced modality of radiation therapy which has grown rapidly worldwide, driven by recent developments in technology and methods of delivery. To ensure safe and high quality treatments, various instruments are used for a range of different measurements such as for quality assurance, monitoring and dosimetry purposes. With the emergence of new and enhanced delivery techniques, systems with improved capabilities are needed to exceed existing performance limitations of conventional tools. The Medipix3 is a hybrid pixel detector able to count individual protons with millisecond time resolution at clinical flux with near instant readout and count rate linearity. The system has previously demonstrated use in medical and other applications, showing wide versatility and potential for particle therapy. In this work we present measurements of the Medipix3 detector in the 60 MeV ocular proton therapy beamline at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, UK. The beam current and lateral beam profiles were evaluated at multiple positions in the treatment line and compared with EBT3 Gafchromic film. The recorded count rate linearity and temporal analysis of the beam structure was measured with Medipix3 across the full range of available beam intensities, up to $3.12 \times 10^{10}$ protons/s. We explore the capacity of Medipix3 to provide non-reference measurements and its applicability as a tool for dosimetry and beam monitoring for CPT. The E-310 experiment at the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests II (FACET-II) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory aims to demonstrate the creation of high brightness beams from a plasma photocathode. Betatron radiation will be measured by a Compton spectrometer, currently under development at UCLA, to provide single-shot, nondestructive beam diagnostics. We give a brief overview of this spectrometer as well as double differential spectrum reconstruction from the spectrometer image and beam parameter reconstruction from this double differential spectrum. We discuss three models for betatron radiation: an idealized particle tracking code which computes radiation from Li\'enard-Wiechert potentials, a quasi-static particle-in-cell (PIC) code which computes radiation from Li\'enard-Wiechert potentials, and a full PIC code which computes radiation using a Monte Carlo QED method. Coherent diffraction imaging enables the imaging of individual defects, such as dislocations or stacking faults, in materials.These defects and their surrounding elastic strain fields have a critical influence on the macroscopic properties and functionality of materials. However, their identification in Bragg coherent diffraction imaging remains a challenge and requires significant data mining. The ability to identify defects from the diffraction pattern alone would be a significant advantage when targeting specific defect types and accelerates experiment design and execution. Here, we exploit a computational tool based on a three-dimensional (3D) parametric atomistic model and a convolutional neural network to predict dislocations in a crystal from its 3D coherent diffraction pattern. Simulated diffraction patterns from several thousands of relaxed atomistic configurations of nanocrystals are used to train the neural network and to predict the presence or absence of dislocations as well as their type(screw or edge). We investigate how similar heatmaps of soccer players are when constructed from (i) event datasets and (ii) tracking datasets. When using event datasets, we show that the scale at which the events are grouped strongly influences the correlation with the tracking heatmaps. Furthermore, there is an optimal scale at which the correlation between event and tracking heatmaps is the highest. However, even at the optimal scale, correlations between both approaches are moderate. Furthermore, there is high heterogeneity in the players' correlation, ranging from negative values to correlations close to the unity. We show that the number of events performed by a player does not crucially determine the level of correlation between both heatmaps. Finally, we analyzed the influence of the player position, showing that defenders are the players with the highest correlations while forwards have the lowest., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Thanks to novel, powerful brain activity recording techniques, we can create data-driven models from thousands of recording channels and large portions of the cortex, which can improve our understanding of brain-states neuromodulation and the related richness of traveling waves dynamics. We investigate the inference of data-driven models and the comparison among experiments and simulations, through the characterization of the spatio-temporal features of cortical waves in experimental recordings and simulations. Inference is built in two steps: the inner loop that optimizes by likelihood maximization a mean-field model, and the outer loop that optimizes a periodic neuro-modulation by relying on direct comparison of observables apt for the characterization of cortical slow waves. The model is capable to reproduce most of the features of the non-stationary and non-linear dynamics displayed by the high-resolution recording of the in-vivo mouse brain obtained by wide-field calcium imaging techniques. The proposed approach is of interest for both experimental and computational neuroscientists.

Faraday's experiment measures -- within a modern view -- the charge adiabatically transported over a macroscopic distance by a given nuclear species in insulating liquids: the reason why it is integer is deeply rooted in topology. Whole numbers enter chemistry in a different form: atomic oxidation states. They are not directly measurable, and are determined instead from an agreed set of rules. Insulating liquids are a remarkable exception: Faraday's experiment indeed measures the oxidation numbers of each dissociated component in the liquid phase, whose topological values are unambiguous. Ionic conductivity in insulating liquids is expressed in terms of the autocorrelation function of the fluctuating charge current at a given temperature in zero electric field; topology plays a major role in this important observable as well. The existing literature deals with the above issues by adopting the independent-electron framework; here I provide the many-body generalization of all the above findings, which furthermore allows for compact and very transparent notations and formulas., Comment: 10 pages, one figure
