Resin cements are widely used to cement dental restorations; however, limited studies are available on the bond strength of these cements to computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) base metal alloys. This study compared the shear bond strength between a self-etching resin cement (Panavia F 2.0) and a millable cobalt-chromium alloy (Ceramill Sintron) following various surface treatments. A total of 40 cylindrical alloy cores (6 mm in diameter × 8 mm in height) were milled and assigned to 1 of 5 groups for different surface treatments (n = 8): control (no surface treatment); sandblasting; metal primer; sandblasting + metal primer; or acid etching. Resin cement was then used to bond cylindrical composite resin specimens to the pretreated core surfaces. The specimens underwent a 1500-cycle thermocycling procedure and shear bond strength testing. The data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The mean (SD) shear bond strength values in the different surface treatment groups were significantly different (P < 0.05): sandblasting, 16.59 (7.10) MPa; acid etching, 15.63 (2.94) MPa; sandblasting + metal primer, 13.28 (1.27) MPa; metal primer, 8.90 (2.08) MPa; and control, 8.86 (3.57) MPa. The mean differences in shear bond strength values were significant between the sandblasting and control groups (P = 0.003) and between the acid-etching and metal primer groups (P = 0.013). Surface roughening procedures--either sandblasting or acid etching of the alloy surface--improved the shear bond strength of resin cement to milled alloy surfaces. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the 18-month clinical performance of two different one-step adhesives that were applied alone or with an additional hydrophobic adhesive layer to noncarious cervical lesions., Methods and Materials: One hundred sixty teeth in 31 patients were included in the study. Each patient received at least four restorations. A 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)-containing one-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil S3 Bond Plus, Kuraray Noritake, Noritake, Japan) and a HEMA-free universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond) were applied to noncarious cervical lesions with or without additional hydrophobic adhesive (Heliobond) randomly. Teeth were restored with a nanohybrid composite. Restorations were evaluated according to FDI criteria at baseline, 6-, 12-, and 18-month recalls. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and the Friedman analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests (α=0.05)., Results: At 18 months, recall rates were 100%, and there was no significant difference between four different adhesive applications in terms of any criteria (p>0.05). The cumulative retention rates were 92.5%, 92.5%, 97.5%, and 100% for the restorations with one-step self-etch, one-step self-etch plus hydrophobic adhesive layer, a universal adhesive, and a universal adhesive plus hydrophobic adhesive layer, respectively., Conclusion: An additional hydrophobic adhesive layer was found to have no significant effect on the 18-month clinical performance of two different one-step adhesive systems with and without HEMA., (©Operative Dentistry, 2024.)

Objectives: The objective of this clinical trial was to evaluate and compare the clinical and radiographic successes of three bioactive endodontic cements (BEC) including novel portland cement-based material releasing fluoride, resin-modified silicate glass cement, and pure tricalcium silicate-based cement-in the treatment of primary molars diagnosed with reversible pulpitis via indirect pulp capping., Methods: Eighty-six (86) participants with previously untreated first and second primary molars were included in this study. The teeth were randomly allocated into three groups: pure tricalcium silicate-based cement, resin-modified silicate glass cement, and novel portland cement-based material releasing fluoride. Cavities were capped with the assigned cement after caries excavation using standard protocols. The teeth that underwent treatment were restored using glass ionomer cement and composite resin. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed at 1, 6, and 12 months. The data were analyzed using Pearson chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis H and Z test (P = 0.05)., Results: The success rate was 88 % (n = 25) in the pure tricalcium silicate-based cement group, 88.5 % (n = 26) in the resin-modified silicate glass cement group, and 100 % (n = 25) in the novel portland cement-based material releasing fluoride group. The differences at the 1st, 6th, and 12th month follow-up visits were not statistically significant among the groups (P > 0.05). Background: Calcium silicate-based sealer has favorable properties for root canal filling, including hydroxyapatite formation during the setting process. However, this process can cause difficulty during post space preparation when the sealer is set. Additionally, the remaining sealer could interfere with the bond strength of fiber post to root canal dentin. The different adhesive strategies and fiber post cementation time may affect the bond strength of the fiber post. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of etching modes of Scotchbond™ Universal Plus adhesive and post cementation time on the push-out bond strength of a fiber post cemented in root canals obturated with calcium silicate-based sealer., Methods: Fifty-four teeth were randomly allocated to 6 groups (n = 9) based on etching modes: self-etch (SE) or etch-and-rinse (ER); post space preparation and cementation time: immediate (Im) or 7-day delayed (De): Im-Im, Im-De, and De-De. The root canals were obturated with calcium silicate-based sealer and the post space preparation was performed. The fiber post was cemented using RelyX™ Universal resin cement according to each group's design. For the push-out bond strength test, 1-mm slices of the coronal, middle, and apical regions were tested using a universal testing machine. The failure mode analysis was determined using a stereomicroscope. The data was analyzed with three-way analysis of variance., Results: No negative effects of etching modes, post space preparation or cementation time on push-out bond strength were detected (p > 0.05). Additionally, the root canal region also did not significantly affect the bond strength (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: No significant differences were observed between the etching modes, post space preparation and cementation time and among root canal regions., Clinical Relevance: The different etching modes of adhesive and post cementation time did not affect the bond strength of fiber post in calcium silicate filled-root canal., (© 2024. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of Gluma and high-power 980-nm diode laser, alone or in combination, in the treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity., Methods: A total of 20 patients (5 men and 15 women), aged 25 to 60 years, who met the inclusion criteria, were enrolled in this study. A total of 60 teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups: G1, 980 nm diode laser (in 2 sessions within a 1-week interval); G2, Gluma (in 2 sessions within a 1-week interval); G3, 980 nm diode laser plus Gluma; and G4: control. Thermal (cold spray) and air blast (air syringe of dental unit) stimuli were used to evaluate cervical dentin hypersensitivity in the patients. Their pain response was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) before treatment (baseline), in the first treatment session (15 minutes after treatment), in the second treatment session (after 1 week), and in 2-week, 1-month, and 3-month follow-up sessions. The obtained data were analysed using non-parametric tests, including Kruskal-Wallis test, Friedman test, Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcoxon test, in SPSS Version 22 at a significance level of P < .05., Results: Based on the results, there was a significant difference in the average VAS scores for cold and air blast stimuli between the 4 groups 1 month after the intervention (P < .05). Meanwhile, the laser group had the lowest VAS score for cold and air stimuli. This laboratory study aimed to evaluate the effects of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) slurry surface treatment on the bond strength of ultratranslucent zirconia to resin cement using different ceramic primers. The surface morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the interface was evaluated by SEM. Additionally, the phase composition was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Specimens of zirconia (n=120) were obtained and divided into two groups according to the surface treatment: (1) airborne particle abrasion with 50-μm aluminum oxide (n=60) and (2) ZrO2 slurry (n=60). The 60 specimens were then further divided into three groups (n=20) according to the ceramic primer application: no primer (NP), Monobond N (MB), and Clearfil ceramic primer (CP). Four resin cement cylinders were built on each ceramic specimen. Half of the specimens (n=10) were subjected to a microshear bond strength (μSBS) test after 24 hours of storage in distilled water, and the other half (n=10) were subjected to a μSBS test after thermocycling. Additional specimens were prepared for SEM, AFM, and XRD analyses. According to the Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc tests, the μSBS values were significantly higher for MB and CP than for NP (p<0.05), and there were no significant differences in μSBS for both surface treatments associated with MB and CP after 24 hours of storage (p>0.05). Thermocycling significantly decreased the μSBS values for all specimens, especially for the NP groups and ZrO2 slurry treatment groups, and gaps at the interface were observed by SEM. SEM and AFM analyses showed agglomerate-type irregularities on the ceramic surface for ZrO2 slurry treatment. XRD spectra showed that ZrO2 slurry did not cause phase transformation. It was concluded that ZrO2 slurry promoted irregularities on the ultratranslucent zirconia surface, not causing phase transformation; moreover, the values of μSBS were comparable to those of airborne particle abrasion with aluminum oxide. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the presence of defects within the adhesive interface formed with five bioactive dental materials and caries-affected dentin concerning the timing of radiotherapy (before or after the restorative procedures) by micro-CT., Methods and Materials: A total of 96 carious human molars were randomly allocated into the following groups based on the timing of the radiotherapy sequence: radiotherapy followed by restoration (RT1) or restoration followed by radiotherapy (RT2). Then, six subgroups were established within these groups based on the type of materials used (n=8). Following cavity preparation and caries removal, a universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond) was administered in self-etch mode or accompanied by applying suitable cavity conditioners according to the manufacturers' guidelines. Subsequently, restorations were performed using five bioactive restorative materials (resin-modified glass-ionomer [Fuji II LC], high-viscosity glass-ionomer hybrid [EQUIA Forte HT], giomer [Beautifil II], alkasite [Cention N], and dual-cure bulk-fill composite [Activa Bioactive Restorative]) and a conventional microhybrid resin composite (Filtek Z250). The radiotherapy regimen encompassed 60 Grays (Gy) administered at a rate of 2 Gy/day over 6 weeks, 5 days a week. Micro-CT analysis was employed to assess adhesive defects at the interface between caries-affected dentin and the restorations. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Dunn tests (α=0.05)., Results: RT2 caused significantly higher adhesive defects than RT1 for the Filtek Z250 and Activa Bioactive Restorative subgroups (p<0.05). For RT1, no significant differences were found in adhesive defects among all tested subgroups (p>0.05). By contrast, for RT2, adhesive defects were significantly higher for the Activa Bioactive Restorative and Cention N subgroups than for the EQUIA Forte HT and Beautifil II subgroups (p<0.05)., Conclusions: When using most bioactive restorative materials, the timing of radiotherapy had no significant influence on the adhesive interface. Regarding restoration following a radiotherapy protocol, a favorable impact was identified with high-viscosity glass ionomer hybrid cement and giomer bioactive restorations compared with dual-cure bioactive bulk-fill composite and alkasite restorations., (©Operative Dentistry, 2024.)

The purpose of this study was to determine the most effective method for bonding composite resin to artificially aged amalgam. A spherical amalgam alloy was triturated and condensed by hand into cylindrical plastic molds (6 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height) to create 90 specimens, which were then aged for 2 weeks in closed plastic containers at 23°C. The amalgam surfaces underwent 1 of 3 surface treatments (n = 30 per treatment): (1) air particle abrasion (APA) with 50-μm aluminum oxide particles applied with a force of 45 psi from a 10-mm distance, followed by rinsing with deionized water for 60 seconds; (2) APA following the same protocol with subsequent application of a metal primer (Alloy Primer); or (3) coating with 30-μm silica (CoJet) at a force of 45 psi from a 10-mm distance until the surface turned black. Specimens were then treated with 1 of 3 adhesives (n = 10 per adhesive per surface treatment): (1) 2-step total-etch adhesive (OptiBond Solo Plus), (2) 1-step self-etching adhesive (Scotchbond Universal), or (3) dual-cured resin cement (Panavia F 2.0). Each adhesive was applied to the treated amalgam surfaces following its manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were placed in a bonding clamp, and nanocomposite resin columns, 2.38 mm in diameter and 2.00 mm in height, were photocured (40 seconds, 500 mW/cm 2 ) against the treated amalgam surfaces. The specimens were stored for 24 hours in 37°C deionized water and underwent shear bond strength testing at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and post hoc analysis with the Tukey test at 95% confidence. The mean (SD) shear bond strength values ranged from 12.3 (1.2) MPa for aluminum oxide-treated surfaces bonded with OptiBond Solo Plus to 25.9 (4.6) MPa for silicoated surfaces bonded with Panavia F 2.0. All bonding agents produced the highest shear bond strength when the amalgam surface was silicoated. Objective: To investigate the effect of decontamination procedures on the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of blood-contaminated resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bonded to resin composite (RC)., Methods: Eighty RMGIC disc specimens were allocated into 5 groups (n=16). All groups except Group 2 were contaminated with blood. Group 1 had no decontamination procedure, Group 3 was decontaminated by rinsing, Group 4 was decontaminated by 34% phosphoric acid etching, and Group 5 was decontaminated by 5% sodium hypochlorite application. RMGIC specimens were subsequently bonded with RC using a universal adhesive in self-etch mode. μSBS tests were conducted using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Failure mode analysis was conducted on RMGIC fracture surfaces under a scanning electron microscope., Results: μSBS results indicated that Group 4 had the highest mean μSBS value of 6.22 ± 2.14 MPa, while Group 1 had the lowest mean μSBS value of 3.53 ±1.67 MPa. Significant differences were observed in the μSBS of Group 2 with no contamination (p=0.023) and Group 4 with decontamination by phosphoric acid-etching (p=0.003) when compared to Group 1 with blood contamination. No statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were observed between all other groups' μSBS. For all groups, the predominant mode of failure was adhesive failure between the RMGIC-RC interface, with a few mixed failures in RMGIC for Groups 2-5., Conclusions: Blood contamination before adhesive application significantly reduced the μSBS between RMGIC and RC. Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most challenging and persistent dental complaints characterized by transient, intense pain triggered by various stimuli. It affects a significant portion of the global population, predominantly those aged 20-40. This study aims to evaluate the desensitizing efficacy of seventh-generation dentin bonding agents (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) against a control group using Bifluorid 12 by Voco in mitigating DH within a month of the follow-up period., Methods: This was a single-center, parallel-group, double-blind, controlled randomized clinical trial conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 105 patients with DH were allocated into three groups for this study. The patients were divided into three groups (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) and the control group containing fluoride varnish (Bifluorid 12 by Voco). Discomfort Interval Scale scores and Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale scores were recorded at baseline, immediately after the intervention, after 01 weeks, and after 01 month., Results: All the materials demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in discomfort and sensitivity (DIS scores p-value 0.01) immediately after 01 week and over a period of 01 month after treatment compared with the baseline scores before application, with no single material proving superior over the one-month observation period. The study also provided insights into dental hygiene practices, with a significant majority using a toothbrush and sensitivity patterns, with cold stimuli being the most common cause of sensitivity., Conclusion: The study demonstrates that Single Bond Universal, Xeno V+, and Bifluorid 12 are equally effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, with no distinct superiority observed over a one-month period. Background and Objective : Sealant application is a proven method to prevent occlusal caries; however, long-term studies on this topic are scarce. This study aimed to assess the survival rate and clinical effectiveness of glass ionomer cement (GIC) and resin-based sealants (RBSs) on second permanent molars over a long-term follow-up period. Materials and methods: Sixteen patients aged 11-13 years with all four completely erupted permanent second molars were enrolled in the study. All patients attended 1-year and 3-year follow-ups; however, one participant did not respond after 10 years and was excluded from the final analyses. The oral health status evaluation was based on WHO criteria. A total of 32 teeth received an RBS (Clinpro), and a further 32 teeth were sealed with GIC (Fuji IX). The sealant retention was determined according to the Kilpatrick criteria after 1 year, 3 years, and 10 years, respectively. Statistical analysis included a chi-square test, the Kaplan-Meier method, and the Cox proportional hazard model. Results : At baseline, seven boys and eight girls participated in the study, with a mean age of 12.3 ± 0.9 years. The 1-year follow-up results revealed that 90% of the RBSs and 43.3% of the GIC sealants were completely retained, and no caries lesions were recorded ( p = 0.01). The 3-year follow-up results showed that 23.3% of the RBSs and 0% of the GIC sealants demonstrated complete retention ( p = 0.034). Moreover, 10.0% of the occlusal surfaces in the RBS group and 13.3% of the occlusal surfaces in the GIC group were filled ( p > 0.05). A total of 6.7% of the RBSs showed complete retention. One-third of the sealed teeth (30.0% of the teeth sealed with RBSs and 36.7% of teeth applied with GIC) were filled after 10 years. The Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated a higher survival rate in the RBS group when compared with the GIC over the entire follow-up period ( p = 0.001). Conclusions : Although the survival rate of RBSs was higher than GIC sealants, their effectiveness in preventing fissure caries in permanent second molars did not differ significantly over a 10-year follow-up.

Statement of Problem: Some light-emitting diode polymerization lights have been promoted as multiple peak or polywave lights that use multiple light-emitting diodes to produce both violet and blue light. However, whether the addition of violet light is required to light-activate resin cements that use bis(4-methoxybenzoyl)diethylgermane (Ivocerin) as the photoinitiator is unclear., Purpose: This in vitro study evaluated the effect of violet, blue, or a combination of violet and blue light through ceramic on the degree of conversion of 2 resin cements that use either camphorquinone or Ivocerin as the photoinitiator., Material and Methods: A Bluephase Style polywave light-emitting diode polymerizing unit delivering 6.4 J/cm 2 of violet and blue light was used. This comprised 1.4 J/cm 2 of violet (385 to 420 nm) and 5.0 J/cm 2 of blue light (420 to 515 nm). The light-emitting diode emitters in a second modified Bluephase Style were connected directly to a power supply so that either just violet (1.4 J/cm 2 ) or just blue (5.0 J/cm 2 ) light was emitted. RelyX Veneer and Variolink Esthetic LC resin cements were either directly light-activated or through 0.5 or 1.5 mm of lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max CAD). The degree of conversion was monitored by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Data were subject to a 3-way analysis of variance followed by the Tukey honest significant difference multiple comparison tests (α=.05)., Results: All factors had a significant effect (P<.001). Increasing the ceramic thickness decreased the degree of conversion only for RelyX Veneer cement (P<.001). The effect of the thickness of ceramic was most noticeable when just violet light was delivered to RelyX Veneer. A significant reduction (P<.001) was found in the degree of conversion of RelyX Veneer when just violet light was delivered. Variolink Esthetic LC had significantly higher degree of conversion values than RelyX Veneer, irrespective of the light type used (P<.001)., Conclusions: A multiple-peak light is not required to photopolymerize a resin cement that uses either camphorquinone or Ivocerin as its photoinitiator. Purpose: To assess the effect of preheating resin-based materials and ultrasound application on the failure load of a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic., Materials and Methods: Ninety ceramic specimens were produced (14×12×1.0 mm) and divided into 9 groups (n = 10) to be bonded to a dentin analog (Nema G10) with light-cured luting agent (LC), flowable resin composite (FL), and supra-nano filled resin composite (SN), as follows: LC/R - LC at room temperature; LC/P - preheated LC; LC/P/U - preheated LC and Ultrasound; FL/R - FL at room temperature; FL/P - preheated FL; FL/P/U - preheated FL and Ultrasound; SN/R - SN at room temperature; SN/P - preheated SN; SN/P/U - preheated SN and Ultrasound. The failure load test was performed in a universal testing machine with the aid of acoustic detection. The data was analyzed with two-way ANOVA (for failure load) and Weibull statistics (Weibull modulus - m and characteristic strength, based on 95% confidence intervals - CI)., Results: The analyses of failure load revealed no statistically significant difference among groups considering the type of luting agent (P = 0.075; F = 2,673), the application method (P = 0.772; F = 2,259), and the interaction between them (P = 0.297; F = 1,248). The characteristic strength did not show differences among groups (95% CI). The m, which indicates structural reliability, showed lower values for SN/P/U and SN/P, with a difference from other selected groups (95% CI)., Conclusion: Preheating of resin-based materials and ultrasound application did not affect the failure load of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. Statement of Problem: Resin-bonded prostheses, including interim resin-bonded prostheses, are effective in preserving tooth structure compared with other types of fixed dental prostheses for the replacement of missing teeth. However, loss of retention remains a notable concern with these types of prostheses., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the influence of glass-ceramic type, resin type, and surface finish on the shear bond strength (SBS) to the CAD-CAM ceramics used to fabricate interim resin-bonded prostheses., Material and Methods: Eighty 10×2-mm glass-ceramic disks were fabricated by using a diamond saw (IsoMet 1000), 40 from feldspathic porcelain blocks (Vita Mark II) and 40 from lithium disilicate blocks (IPS e.max CAD). Half of the specimens in each group were left with a dull or matte surface finish after cutting, while the other half were glazed with an add-on glaze (VitaAkzento Plus Glaze Spray and IPS e.max CAD Glaze Spray, respectively). The disks were mounted in acrylic resin, and each group was subdivided into 2, with 1 receiving a photopolymerized resin cement (RelyX Veneer) and the other receiving a flowable composite resin (Filtek Supreme Ultimate Flow) to form 2.38×2-mm cylinders. SBS was determined using a universal testing machine (Instron 4411) in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 29022:2013 standard, and failure modes were analyzed by using a stereomicroscope with ×40 magnification. The data were analyzed with a 3-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc analysis. The chi-squared test was used to analyze the failure mode (α=.05 for all tests)., Results: Ceramic type, resin type, and surface finish significantly impacted SBS (P<.001, P=.003, P<.001, respectively). Lithium disilicate showed higher SBS than feldspathic porcelain, and flowable composite resin exhibited higher SBS than resin cement. Glazed surfaces displayed lower SBS compared with the dull or matte surfaces. The combinations among the 3 materials also impacted SBS (P=.03). In addition, the combinations between ceramic type and surface finish affected SBS (P<.001), regardless of resin cement type. No other combinations affected the SBS (P>.05). The mode of failure was different among the groups (P<.001). In comparison with all other groups, cohesive failures were most prevalent in feldspathic porcelain with a dull or matte surface finish, regardless of the resin type used., Conclusions: The SBS to glass-ceramics was influenced by ceramic material, resin cement type, and surface finish. Flowable composite resin showed higher SBS than resin cement. A dull or matte surface finish exhibited greater bond strength than a glazed surface. Objective: To evaluate the effect of prolonged (P) polymerization time of a universal adhesive system applied in etch-and-rinse (ER) or self-etch (SE) strategies on the clinical performance of restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs), after 36 months of clinical service., Methods: A total of 140 restorations were randomly placed in 35 subjects according to the polymerization time groups: ER (10 s); ER-P (40 s); SE (10 s); and SE-P (40 s) at 1,200 mW/cm 2 . Composite resin was placed incrementally. The restorations were evaluated immediately and after 6, 12, 18, and 36 months using the FDI criteria. Data were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier survival test for retention loss, and the Kruskal-Wallis' test for secondary outcomes (α = 0.05)., Results: After 36 months, 19 restorations were lost: ER 6, ER-P 2, SE 9, SE-P 2. The retention rates were 82.3% for ER; 94.1 % for ER-P; 73.5 % for SE; and 94.1 % for SE-P, with a significant difference between ER vs. ER-P and SE vs. SE-P, as well as ER vs. SE-P and ER-P vs. SE (p < 0.0001). Minor defects were observed in 18 restorations for the marginal staining criteria: ER 5, ER-P 2, SE 8, SE-P 3; and in 33 restorations for the marginal adaptation criteria: ER 11, ER-P 4, SE 12, and SE-P 6 (p > 0.05). The aim of this study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength and the failure mode of single adjustable posts (SPLENDOR SAP), anatomical posts (AP), or computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) posts cemented to flared root canal dentin with self-adhesive dual-cure resin cement. Thirty single-rooted premolars received endodontic treatment with gutta-percha and a calcium hydroxide-based endodontic cement. After 24 hours, the canal spaces were enlarged with burs. The tooth specimens were divided equally into three groups (n=10), according to the glass fiber post (GFP) system: AP-prefabricated GFP (Reforpost #2, Angelus) was relined with composite resin (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M ESPE); SPLENDOR SAP-GFP was used with a glass fiber sleeve to adjust the adaptation (Splendor SAP, Angelus); and CAD-CAM-a resin pattern was obtained and scanned to produce a CAD-CAM GFP (Fiber CAD Lab, Angelus) milled using a subtractive technique. The three GFP systems were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement (Rely X U200, 3M ESPE). The roots were fixed to an acrylic resin plate used to section them into specimens of cervical, middle, and apical thirds. Then, the slices were attached to a universal testing machine to perform the push- out test at a speed of 0.5 mm/min and a load of 50 Kgf. The posttest specimens were examined under a stereoscopic microscope to evaluate the failure mode. The bond strength variable was analyzed using a generalized linear model, following a split-plot design. Failure mode analysis was performed using Fisher exact test. The significance level adopted was 5%. There was no significant difference among the GFP systems or among the thirds, in terms of bond strength (p>0.05), nor was there any significant association between the systems and the failure mode (p>0.05). Most specimens presented mixed or adhesive failure between resin cement and dentin. Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the stress distributions of a primary molar tooth restored with a stainless steel crown (SSC) using resin and glass ionomer luting cements by Finite Element Analysis (FEA)., Methods: Original DICOM data of a primary molar was used to create a 3D model. One model was prepared as a tooth model with SSC. A 30 μm cement layer was used in model. Two different luting cements were tested in the study: self-cure adhesive resin cement, and glass ionomer cement. Vertical and oblique loads of 330 N were applied to simulate maximum bite force and lateral forces in the occlusal contact areas of the models. Maximum von Mises stress values in the models were evaluated as MPa., Results: The maximum von Mises stress value was observed in the force application and general occlusal contact areas for all models. The maximum von Mises stress values were higher in the tooth model with SSC using self-cure adhesive resin cement (478.09 MPa and 214.62 MPa) than in the tooth model with SSC using glass ionomer cement (220.06 MPa and 198.72 MPa) in both vertical and oblique loading, respectively., Conclusions: Depending on the magnitude of the bite force on the SSC, fracture of the luting cement materials could occur if the stress exceeds the endurance limit of the luting cement. Statement of Problem: Little is known about the effect of different composite resin cements on the bond strength of prefabricated and milled glass fiber post-and-cores., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the push-out bond strengths of root dentin and standard, relined, or computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) glass fiber post-and-cores luted with conventional, universal, or self-adhesive composite resin cement., Material and Methods: Post spaces were prepared in 90 premolars. Standard and relined prefabricated and CAD-CAM-milled glass fiber post-and-cores were luted with conventional (RelyX ARC; 3M ESPE), universal (RelyX Ultimate; 3M ESPE), and self-adhesive (RelyX U200; 3M ESPE) composite resin cement (n=10). All specimens were thermally aged (5000 cycles at 5°C and 55°C with a 20-second dwell time) and mechanical fatigue (1 000 000 cycles at 2 Hz, 50-N load). The specimens were sectioned perpendicularly to the root long axis into 1-mm-thick sections (apical, middle, and cervical root thirds), the push-out bond strength was determined, and the mode of failure recorded. Data were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Bonferroni-Dunn multiple comparison test (α=.05)., Results: Push-out bond strength values did not differ (P>.05) among posts at the same root thirds. Standard posts showed higher bond strength than CAD-CAM at the apical third for data grouped by composite resin cements (P<.001). The cervical root thirds had higher bond strength than the apical thirds (P<.05). The cervical, middle, and apical root thirds showed decreasing bond strength values for each type of post for data grouped by composite resin cement (P<.001). Adhesive failures at the dentin-cement interface were predominant., Conclusions: The type of posts and cements did not affect the bond strength of glass fiber posts. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of application mode on the short-term microshear bond strength longevity of self-etching and universal adhesive systems to enamel, the failure mode, and the resulting enamel surface micromorphology. Ninety enamel surfaces were obtained from sound third molars, planed, and randomly assigned to nine groups, according to the application mode and the adhesive system (n=10). There were three primer application modes: according to the manufacturer's recommended application time (control), using double the application time recommended for the primer and selective enamel etching. The adhesive systems used were: Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray), FL-Bond II (SHOFU), and Futurabond U (Voco). At least two resin-bonded composite cylinders (Grandioso Light Flow, Voco) were placed on each enamel surface, and then evaluated for microshear bond strength at 24 hours and 180 days of storage in solution body fluid (SBF) at pH 7.4. Failure modes were evaluated with a stereoscopic microscope at 20× magnification. A micromorphological analysis of the enamel surface was performed under a scanning electron microscope at 5000× magnification before and after the treatments. Mixed models for repeated measures over time showed significant interaction among application modes, adhesive systems, and time periods (p=0.0331). The bond strength of FL-Bond II adhesive to enamel observed after performing selective enamel etching was significantly higher than that observed after applying the control treatment (p=0.0010) at both 24 hours and 180 days. However, no significant difference was observed between the application of this same adhesive at double the time recommended by the manufacturer and the other two application modes (p>0.05). There was also no significant difference in the microshear bond strength for the enamel treatments applied using Clearfil SE Bond and Futurabond U (p>0.05). A significant reduction in bond strength to enamel was observed at the 180-day storage time for all the adhesive systems when selective enamel etching was performed (p<0.0001). No significant association was observed between the adhesive system failure mode and the enamel treatments (p=0.1402 and p=0.7590 for 24 hours and 180 days, respectively). Objective: To evaluate the effects, of using silane coupling agent within the procedures of repairing old composite restorations with or without sandblasting their surfaces, on the clinical performance of repaired composite restorations., Methods: The study involved repairing 130 Class I and II defective composite restorations. After recurrent caries removal, the repair process included etching with 37 % phosphoric acid, Adper Single Bond 2 application for bonding and Filtek Z250 composite for restoring all defects. The restoration surfaces were subjected to one of the following additional surface treatments within the repair process: Control: No additional treatment; the Silane-Adhesive treatment: A separate step involved the application of a silane coupling agent after acid etching; and the Sandblast-Silane-Adhesive treatment: included intra-oral sandblasting of old composite surfaces followed by silane application. Two calibrated examiners evaluated all repaired restorations according to a modified USPHS criteria after 6 months. Comparisons of the clinical performance between the treatment groups were made using Chi-square test, while responses to cold tests before and after repair treatment were made using Wilcoxon's Signed Rank's (α = 0.05)., Results: Of 130 cases, only 116 cases turned up for evaluation. The primary reasons for composite repair were recurrent caries and anatomical deficiencies. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups for all clinical criteria (p > 0.05). The control group experienced one total and two partial retention losses., Conclusions: The application of a silane coupling agent, with or without intra-oral sandblasting, demonstrated no improvement on the clinical performance of repaired posterior composites after 6-months., Clinical Significance: Surface treatment of defective composite restorations using silane with intra-oral sandblasting within their repair process offered marginal improvement in their clinical performance over conventional etching technique, but insignificantly so. Repair reduced exaggerated cold test responses and eliminated POS within 6-months. Repair reduces cold sensitivity and promotes restoration longevity. Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of simplified adhesive strategies (self-etch vs selective enamel etch and 10- vs 20-second adhesive application time) on the marginal integrity in primary molars., Methods: Forty deep class-II cavities were prepared in 40 extracted primary molars. The molars were divided into 4 groups based on the applied universal adhesive strategy as follows: groups 1 and 2: selective enamel etch with 20- or 10-second application time and groups 3 and 4: self-etch with 20- or 10-second application time. All cavities were restored with a sculptable bulk-fill composite restoration. The restorations underwent a thermomechanical loading (TML, 5-50 °C, 2-minute dwelling time, ×1000; 400,000 loading cycles, 1.7 Hz, 49 N). Marginal analysis before and after TML was conducted with scanning electron microscopy and the marginal integrity of each restoration was calculated as a percentage of continuous margins. A beta regression model was adopted to statistically analyse the data with a consequent pairwise comparison., Results: The mean marginal integrity (% ± SD) of the restorations for each tested adhesive strategy after TML was as follows: selective enamel etch/20 seconds = 85.4 ± 3.9, self-etch/20 seconds = 85.3 ± 5.2, self-etch/10 seconds = 80.1 ± 8.2, and selective enamel etch/10 seconds = 80.0 ± 8.5. The difference between both adhesive strategies was not statistically significant at the same application time. The difference between both application times within the same adhesive strategy was statistically significant (P ≤ .01)., Conclusions: Universal adhesives applied either in selective enamel etch or in self-etch mode result in comparable marginal integrities when restoring class-II cavities in primary molars. Objective: The aim of this study was to review the selection criteria of resin cements for different types of partial coverage restorations (PCRs) and investigate if the type of restorations or restorative materials affect the type of selected resin cement., Materials and Methods: An electronic search (1991-2023) was performed in PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases by combinations of related keywords., Results: A total of 68 articles were included to review the selection criteria based on the advantages, disadvantages, indications, and performance of resin cements for different types of PCRs., Conclusions: The survival and success of PCRs are largely affected by appropriate cement selection. Self-curing and dual-curing resin cements have been recommended for the cementation of metallic PCRs. The PCRs fabricated from thin, translucent, and low-strength ceramics could be adhesively bonded by light-cure conventional resin cements. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the load capacity of maxillary central incisors with simulated flared root canal restored with different fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post cemented with either self-adhesive or self-etch resin cement and its mode of fracture., Methods: Sixty-five extracted maxillary incisors were decoronated, its canal was artificially flared and randomly categorized into group tFRC (tapered FRC post) ( n = 22), mFRC (multi-FRC post) ( n = 21), and DIS-FRC (direct individually shaped-FRC (DIS-FRC) post) ( n = 22), which were further subdivided based on cementation resin. The posts were cemented and a standardized resin core was constructed. After thermocycling, the samples were loaded statically and the maximum load was recorded., Results: The load capacity of the maxillary central incisor was influenced by the different FRC post system and not the resin cement ( p = 0.289), and no significant interaction was found between them. Group mFRC (522.9N) yielded a significantly higher load capacity compared to DIS-FRC (421.1N). Overall, a 55% favorable fracture pattern was observed, and this was not statistically significant., Conclusion: Within the limitation of the study, it can be concluded that prefabricated FRC posts outperform DIS-FRC posts in terms of the load capacity of a maxillary central incisor with a simulated flared root canal. The cementation methods whether a self-adhesive or self-etch resin cement, was not demonstrated to influence the load capacity of a maxillary central incisor with a flared root canal. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate remineralisation and its effect on microtensile bond-strength of artificially induced caries affected dentin (CAD) when treated with a commercial universal adhesive modified with poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM) loaded mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (A-PMBG)., Material and Methods: Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBG) were synthesised using sol-gel process, where PAMAM was loaded (P-MBG) and added to commercial adhesive at different weight percentages (0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%). First, rheological properties of commercial and modified adhesives were evaluated. The effect of remineralization/hardness and microtensile bond-strength (MTBs) of those samples that mimicked the rheological properties of commercial adhesives were evaluated using Vickers hardness tester and universal testing machine respectively. Scanning-Electron microscope was used to visualize failed samples of MTBs and remineralization samples. Both evaluations were carried out at 1-,3 and 6-month intervals, samples being stored in stimulated salivary fluid during each time interval., Results: Addition of nanoparticles altered the rheological properties. With increase in the weight percentage of nanoparticles in commercial adhesive, there was significant increase in degree of conversion, viscosity and sedimentation rate (p < 0.05). The 0.2 and 0.5 wgt% groups closely mimicked the properties of commercial adhesive and were evaluated for remineralization and MTBs. After 6 months, 0.2wgt% group showed increased MTBs (p < 0.05) and 0.5wgt% group increased remineralization/hardness (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The complex of PAMAM-MBG-Universal adhesive can remineralize the demineralised CAD thereby improving its bond-strength when evaluated for up to 6-months., (© 2023. Statement of Problem: Implant manufacturers have introduced titanium base (Ti-Base) abutments with increased abutment heights, ostensibly, to increase the retention of the bonded restoration and to improve overall strength. However, evidence regarding the effects of increasing Ti-Base height on improving retention is lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of different Ti-Base abutment heights on the retention of zirconia implant-supported crowns., Material and Methods: Thirty Ti-Base abutments of the same diameter and heights of 3.5 mm (n=10), 4.5 mm (n=10), and 5.5 mm (n=10), were used for testing. Zirconia restorations were cemented onto the Ti-Base abutments with a resin cement after treatment with a 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate primer by a single operator using a positioning device. The zirconia-Ti-Base restorations were tightened to an implant analog embedded in an autopolymerizing resin block. The specimens were placed and tested in a universal testing machine for pull-out testing. Retention was measured by recording the force at load drop. Statistical analysis was performed using 1-way analysis of variance with the Tukey method for pairwise comparisons., Results: The abutment height had a significant effect on retention (P=.010). Ti-Base abutments of 4.5 and 5.5 mm had significantly greater retention than Ti-Base abutments of 3.5 mm (P=.020, P=.040, respectively). Objectives: To evaluate the absence of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on the adhesive properties with enamel and dentin of universal adhesive systems containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)., Methods and Materials: One hundred and twelve caries-free third molars were used to test adhesion to dentin (n=64) and enamel (n=48). For each substrate, teeth were divided into eight experimental groups: four different adhesives each using two adhesive strategies. The adhesives used were: (1) Scotchbond Universal (SBU, 3M Oral Care, St Paul, MN, USA) as a HEMA-containing universal adhesive; (2) Gluma Bond Universal (GBU, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany); (3) Solare Universal Bond (SUB, GC, Tokyo, Japan); and (4) Zipbond Universal (ZIP, SDI, Victoria, Australia) as HEMA-free universal adhesives. The adhesive strategies used were etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE). For dentin tests, the occlusal third of the crown of all teeth was removed and an adhesive protocol was applied. After completing the restoration, specimens were sectioned into bonded sticks (0.8 mm 2) and tested for microtensile bond strength (μTBS), in situ degree of conversion (DC), and nanoleakage (NL) by scanning electron microscopy. For enamel tests, teeth were sectioned into four parts (buccal, lingual, and proximal), and an adhesive protocol was applied. After completing the restoration, the specimens were tested for their microshear bond strength (μSBS). For in situ degree of conversion (DC) and nanoleakage (NL) evaluation of enamel, the specimens were sectioned in slices to be evaluated. The data for each substrate were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05) for each property evaluated., Results: The SBU and ZIP adhesives showed the highest μSBS, and DC (dentin and enamel) and lower NL (dentin) values compared to GBU and SUB (p=0.001). However, SBU showed better results in terms of μTBS and μSBS (SE strategy), and DC (dentin and enamel) than ZIP. Strategy ER presented higher values of μTBS and μSBS when compared to strategy SE (p=0.001), except for SBU., Conclusion: The effect of the absence of HEMA in commercial universal adhesive systems on enamel and dentin adhesive properties appears to be material-dependent., (©Operative Dentistry, 2023.)

Dentists frequently encounter the need to cement indirect restorations in clinical situations that are less than ideal, and the longevity and predictability of the indirect restorative materials used in such cases is largely predicated on the chemical and/or mechanical bond formed between the natural tooth or abutment and the cement. These non-ideal scenarios have been a significant driver in the continued evolution of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) with added functional monomers, such as 10-MDP. This article discusses three real-world case studies in which a newly developed universal SARC was utilized and combined with the use of an optional adhesive-enhancing primer that employs a proprietary "touch-cure" technology, or a light-cured adhesive, to improve the bond strength of the resin cement and enhance patient outcomes.

This study investigated the effect of radiation timing on the bond strength of resin cement to intraradicular dentine. Fifty human teeth were distributed into 5 groups (n = 10): Control (nonirradiated teeth), Before-RCT (teeth irradiated before root canal treatment), After-CH (teeth irradiated after canal preparation and placement of calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing), After-RCT (teeth irradiated after completion of root canal treatment) and After-FPL (teeth irradiated after luting of a glass fibre post). Each tooth received 70 Gy irradiation. The roots were sectioned for push-out strength testing. After-RCT and After-FPL groups had significantly lower push-out strength than the control at the middle third (p < 0.05). Control and After-CH groups had a higher percentage of cohesive dentine failure. Radiotherapy after root canal obturation and post luting adversely affected the adhesiveness of resin cement to intraradicular dentine. Purpose: To assess the clinical performance of restorations with ground and unground enamel for diastema closure., Methods and Materials: Twenty-four patients attended and received two to ten composite build-ups for diastema closure. The restorations were performed separately by grinding and not grinding the enamel on the proximal surfaces on symmetric teeth. A nanofill direct composite (Filtek Ultimate Universal Restorative System, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) was used with a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) for restorations. Restorations were evaluated according to the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria at baseline and 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-year recalls., Results: The cumulative success rate of direct composite build-up with ground and unground enamel was 100% and 88.7%, respectively. Six restorations with unground enamel failed due to fracture. No significant difference was found between the restorations with ground enamel and unground enamel with regard to the evaluation criteria., Conclusion: The 5-year success rates of restorations with ground and unground enamel were excellent. The success rate of restorations with ground enamel was higher than that of restorations with unground enamel. Statement of Problem: Lack of conversion of resin cements for luting glass fiber posts in deeper levels of the root canal may compromise clinical performance., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the degree of conversion on the surface properties of dual-polymerized resin cements used for cemented glass fiber posts according to the root level., Material and Methods: Fifty maxillary central incisor teeth were endodontically treated, and glass fiber posts were cemented using the following systems: self-adhesive dual-polymerized resin luting cement (RelyX U200) and dual-polymerizing flowable core and a post luting system (Rebilda DC) with a self-etching adhesive (Futurabond DC). The degree of conversion was determined via attenuated total reflectance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and surface microhardness and cement film thickness were measured. The intraradicular fit was evaluated with microscopy. All tests were performed in the coronal, middle, and apical third of the root canal. Statistical analysis was done with ANOVA and the multiple comparison Tukey test (α=.05)., Results: The degree of conversion was higher in the coronal third using Rebilda DC (65.3 ±4.8%) than RelyX U200 (38.7 ±5.3%) (P<.05); on both resin cements, these values decreased from the coronal to the apical third (30.9 ±3.7%, 61.9 ±8.7%, respectively). The cement film thickness was higher for RelyX U200 in the 3 thirds than for Rebilda DC; significant differences (P<.05) were recorded in both cementing systems in the coronal and apical thirds. In the middle third, no significant differences were observed (P>.05). The mean surface microhardness values increased in the coronal thirds and decreased with increasing root canal depth. The marginal seal in the coronal thirds and the intraradicular fit in the middle thirds showed closer adaptation; however, some tags were observed in the interface resin cement and radicular dentin. Objectives: To compare the clinical performance of mildly acidic universal adhesives Scotchbond Universal (SU, 3M Oral Care, St Paul, MN, USA) and Prime & Bond Elect (PBE, Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, NC, USA) in the restoration of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs)., Methods and Materials: A total of 63 patients in need of 203 NCCL restorations participated in this randomized controlled clinical trial. Notch-shaped lesions were restored with Kalore (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) after application of either SU or PBE, following the etch-and-rinse (ER) or self-etch (SE) techniques. Subjects were followed up for 60 months. The focus of the statistical analyses was on the change of outcome over time as assessed by the Modified USPHS rating system (ie, Alfa vs Bravo + Charlie outcomes). Logistic regression was performed for each outcome separately with compound symmetric variance-covariance structure assumed to consider a correlation of restorations within subjects. All analyses were conducted using SAS 9.4 (SAS, Cary, NC, USA)., Results: One-hundred twenty-nine teeth in 35 subjects were assessed at the 60-month follow-up. In addition, three restorations that failed prior to the 60-month evaluation, two of which were in subjects who did not present for the 60-month follow-up, were included in the statistical analysis. In total, two restorations in the SU&#95;ER group and three restorations in the PBE&#95;SE group failed the retention category. Statistically significant differences were obtained for the comparison of restorations in the PBE&#95;SE and PBE&#95;ER groups, where the former was 58% less likely to maintain a score of Alfa for marginal discoloration than the latter., Conclusions: SU and PBE demonstrated acceptable clinical performance at 60 months with regard to restoration retention. Background: To investigate the effect of 0.3 M 1-ethyl-3(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) aqueous solution pretreatment on push-out bond strength (PBS) and matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity within radicular dentin when different post cementation strategies were employed., Methods: One hundred and twenty monoradicular human teeth were endodontically treated and randomly divided into six groups, depending on the cementation strategy and root dentin pretreatment (n = 20): EAR: cementation with an etch-and-rinse adhesive (LuxaBond Total Etch, DMG) and resin cement (LuxaCore Z Dual, DMG); EAR/EDC: 1 min EDC pretreatment after etching + EAR; SE: cementation with a self-etch primer (Multilink Primer, Ivoclar Vivadent) and corresponding cement (Multilink Automix, Ivoclar Vivadent); SE/EDC: self-etch primer + EDC pretreatment + SE; SA: cementation with a universal self-adhesive cement (RelyX Universal, 3 M); SA/EDC: EDC pretreatment + SA. Slices were submitted to PBS test and interfacial nanoleakage evaluation 24 h after cementation or after thermocycling (40.000 cycles, 5-55 °C). To investigate the effect of EDC on MMPs activity, 4 additional first maxillary premolars per group were processed for in situ zymography analysis. Multivariate ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests were used to analyze PBS values. The data from in situ zymography were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's pairwise multiple comparison procedures (α = 0.05)., Results: The variables "EDC pretreatment", "root region" and "thermocycling" significantly influenced PBS (p < 0.05), while the variable "cementation strategy" had no influence (p > 0.05). Thermocycling significantly reduced PBS in SE and SA groups (p < 0.05). EDC was effective in preserving PBS after artificial aging. EDC pretreatment significantly reduced enzymatic activity at baseline in EAR and SE groups, and in SA group after thermocycling (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: The use of EDC prevents the reduction of bond-strength values after artificial aging and silences endogenous enzymatic activity within radicular dentin when different cementation strategies were employed., (© 2023. Background: Opaque cements can be esthetically unfavorable and alternative translucent materials have been developed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color interference of a new translucent cement compared with conventional materials, in association with interim restoration with different thickness and shades., Methods: Bis-acryl composite disks were prepared in 2 thicknesses (1.2 mm, 0.6 mm) and 3 shades (A3.5, A2, bleached) to simulate the restorations. Cementation over dentin disks was performed with 1 translucent cement (Provicol QM Aesthetic; VOCO), 2 conventional cements (Provicol; VOCO, Temp-Bond NE; Kerr Dental), and 1 transparent liquid (polyethylene glycol 400). The difference between the color of the specimens cemented with the transparent liquid and that of the specimens cemented with each cement was calculated (ΔEab). The data were analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance and Tukey tests (5%)., Results: Significant differences were observed for all factors and some interactions (P < .05). For Provicol QM Aesthetic, the shade and thickness did not influence the ΔEab. For Provicol and Temp-Bond NE, the lighter and thinner the specimen, the higher the ΔEab. Only Provicol QM Aesthetic had smaller means than the perceptibility threshold. Temp-Bond NE and Provicol had higher values than the acceptability threshold for some combinations., Conclusions: The highly translucent cement had less color interference than the conventional materials. The thickness and resin shade only affected the results for the opaque cements. The thinner specimens and the lighter shades had higher color interference., Practical Implications: The use of a more translucent cement can produce a smaller color interference on the esthetic outcome of interim restorations., (Copyright © 2023 American Dental Association. Background: Titanium tetrafluoride has been shown to protect tooth enamel from demineralization. This study investigated the effect of incorporating different concentrations of TiF4 (1, 2 and 3 Wt.%) into an orthodontic primer on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and the enamel microhardness after cariogenic challenges., Methods: Three different TiF4 concentrations (1, 2 and 3 Wt.%) were prepared and added to the etch and rinse orthodontic primer. Ninety freshly extracted premolars were randomly divided into five groups according to the experimental primers and ageing conditions: TF0, TF0C, TF1C, TF2C, and TF3C. The TF0C group had no TiF4 in the primer, while TF1C, TF2C, and TF3C had 1, 2 and 3 Wt.% TiF4 in the primer, respectively. In the TF0 group, specimens were immersed in deionized water for 24 h as a control group, while all other groups were immersed in a demineralizing solution for 28 days. Each of the five groups was divided into two subgroups: The first group was subjected to shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index testing (N = 50 teeth, 10/group), while the second group was subjected to enamel surface microhardness testing (N = 25 teeth, 50 tooth halves, 10 tooth halves/group). Fifteen teeth (N = 15 teeth, n = 3/group) representing the five groups were subjected to SEM and microelemental analysis (EDX). SBS, ARI, microhardness, and Ca/P ratio were measured, and the data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's tests., Results: The TF2C group had the highest SBS value (9.93 ± 1.23), while the TF0C (5.24 ± 0.65) and TF3C (5.13 ± 0.55) had the lowest SBS values. The enamel microhardness in the TF0C group was significantly reduced (p < .001). Enamel microhardness values were significantly (p < .001) higher in groups TF1C, TF2C, and TF3C than in TF0C. The highest Ca/P ratio was significantly recorded for the TF2C group (2.65 ± 0.02)., Conclusions: Incorporation of 1 and 2 Wt.% TiF4 into the orthodontic primers showed adequate bond strength and better remineralization effect. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of endodontic sealer (ES) on bond strength (BS) of prefabricated or milled-CAD-CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) glass-fiber-posts (GFP). Canals of 90 single-rooted teeth were prepared for filling by the single-cone technique with gutta-percha and one of the following ES: AH Plus (epoxy resin), Endofill (zinc-oxide and eugenol), and Bio-C Sealer (calcium-silicate). After post-space preparation, tooth-specimens were equally divided in half according to type of GFP to be used. In the half to receive milled-CAD-CAM posts, tooth specimens were molded with acrylic resin to obtain replicas. These were scanned to enable the laboratory to produce the milled-CAD-CAM GFPs (Fiber CAD Lab, Angelus) by the subtractive technique. The other half of samples received prefabricated GFPs (Exacto, Angelus) (n=15). The GFPs were cemented with dual-cure resin cement (Panavia F2.0, Kuraray). Each root was sectioned into two slices per root region (cervical, middle, apical) that were subjected to the push-out BS test, in a universal testing machine. Failure mode (FM) was classified by scores. The BS data were submitted to generalized linear model analyses, while FM was analyzed using the chi-square test (a=0.05). BS showed no significant difference among the three ES (p > 0.05). BS was significantly higher for prefabricated (mean 10.84 MPa) versus milled-CAD-CAM GFPs (mean 6.94 MPa) (p <0.0001), irrespective of ES. The majority showed mixed failures. It could be concluded that type of ES did not affect BS of GFPs to dentin, and prefabricated-GFPs had higher bond-strength than customized-milled-CAD-CAM GFPs.

Statement of Problem: Zirconia has been widely used as a dental prosthetic material. However, bonding to zirconia is challenging, and whether a Zr/Si coating would improve bonding is unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to prepare a Zr/Si coating on zirconia ceramics using a sol-gel method and to determine whether the bonding to resin is improved., Material and Methods: Presintered zirconia specimens were prepared and divided into 5 groups: 4 experimental groups with ratios of the binary sol-gel precursor (zirconium oxychloride/tetraethoxysilane) set as 2:1 (Z2), 1:1 (Z1), 0.5:1 (Z0.5), and 0.25:1 (Z0.25) and Group C as the control group. In addition to surface roughness measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were carried out to characterize the surface. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups according to whether a silane coupling agent was applied. Half of the bond specimens were stored in deionized water for 24 hours; the remaining half were aged using 5000 thermocycles. The shear bond strength (SBS) of resin bonded to specimens was tested for the initial and durable bond strength, and the bonding interface was also observed by SEM after debonding. Data were subjected to 1-way ANOVA and the post hoc Tukey honestly significant difference test (α=.05)., Results: The Zr/Si coating formed on zirconia ceramics. Z0.5 had the greatest mean ±standard deviation roughness (2.13 ±0.15 μm) and had the highest silicon content (21.7 ±0.21%). t-ZrO 2 , m-ZrO 2 , c-SiO 2, and ZrSiO 4 were detected by XRD in Z1. The SBS values were decreased by aging but were significantly increased by Zr/Si coating, especially for Z0.5, with the application of silane (initial: 22.92 ±2.79 MPa; aged: 9.91 ±0.92 MPa)., Conclusions: The Zr/Si coating significantly improved the initial and aged bond strength, and the optimal Zr/Si ratio of the sol-gel appeared to be 0.5:1., (Copyright © 2023 Editorial Council for The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of surface treatments in maximum profile valley depth (Rv), surface roughness (Sa), contact angle (Ca), shear bond strength (SBS) of a light-cured resin cement, microstructure, and composition of two CAD/CAM ceramics: Cerec Blocs/Dentsply Sirona (feldspathic - FEL) and Empress CAD/Ivoclar Vivadent (leucite-reinforced - LEU). The ceramic specimens were submitted to six surface treatments: (1) 5% hydrofluoric acid (HF) - 20 seconds; (2) 5% HF - 60 seconds; (3) 10% HF - 20 seconds; (4) 10% HF - 60 seconds; (5) self-etching ceramic primer (MEP) - 20 seconds; and (6) MEP - 60 seconds. Specimens treated with HF received silane application for 1 minute. Rv and Sa were evaluated in a confocal laser microscope (n=10) and the Ca in a goniometer (n=6). For the SBS test, two resin cement cylinders were bonded to each specimen, one tested after 24 hours in distilled water storage (37°C) and the other after one year (n=10). The microstructures and compositions were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) (n=4). Rv, Sa, and Ca data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, and the SBS data by three-way ANOVA, all followed by post-hoc Tukey's test (α=0.05). Results: Surface treatments with HF always produced higher Rv and Sa, and lower Ca than MEP 60s for both ceramics. After 1-year water storage, FEL ceramic treated with MEP for 60 seconds produced higher SBS values than HF treatments, whereas for LEU ceramic there were no differences among treatments. Application of MEP for 20 or 60 seconds produced no difference in Rv, Sa, Ca, and SBS for both ceramics. Surface treatments produced considerable differences in ceramic topography, but subtle ones in composition, for both ceramics. Conclusions: The results indicated that for FEL ceramic, MEP application for 60 seconds yielded higher SBS compared with HF etching, while for LEU ceramic the surface treatments did not influence the SBS results., (©Operative Dentistry, 2023.)

Aim: To compare the effect of polymerization of resin-modified glass ionomer cement and dual-cure resin cement on the crystalline structure and to correlate it clinically with postoperative sensitivity., Settings and Design: The evaluation of crystalline strain in the dentin slabs was done using Synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The post operative sensitivity was measured clinically using Schiff's sensitivity scale., Materials and Methods: A total of 44 extracted and noncarious premolars were collected. Dentin slabs of dimensions 2 mm × 2 mm × 1.5 mm were prepared from the buccal aspect of the extracted teeth. The dentin slabs were then divided into two groups, Group A dual-cured resin cement and Group B resin-modified glass ionomer cement was applied. The dentin slabs first underwent synchrotron X-ray diffraction before and after the application of cement. Forty-two patients who were undergoing complete metal fixed prostheses on vital posterior abutments were selected. In this, 21 vital abutments were included in each group. Tooth preparation and fabrication of complete metal prostheses were done in the conventional manner and cemented using the 2 luting cements in Groups A and B, respectively. Dentinal hypersensitivity was measured using Schiff 's scale, postcementation, after 1 week and 1 month., Statistical Analysis: Independent t-test was done for comparing the two cements in two cements in terms of lattice strain. Mann-Whitney U-test was done for comparing the cements with respect to dentinal hypersensitivity. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used for clinical correlation between dentinal hypersensitivity and crystalline strain., Results: The lattice strain generated in dual cure resin cement was higher than that in resin-modified glass ionomer cement and was statistically significant. Postcementation hypersensitivity was higher in dual-cured resin than resin-modified glass ionomer cement but was not statistically significant in the follow-up visits. Spearman's correlation coefficients did not reveal any significant clinical correlation between lattice strain and dentinal hypersensitivity., Conclusion: Dual cure resin cements generate greater lattice strain as compared to resin modified glass ionomer cements.

Statement of Problem: Little is known about the fracture strength, retention, and adaptation of post-and-cores fabricated with novel tooth-colored materials by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM)., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the fracture strength, pull-out bond strength (POBS), and volume of luting agent of endodontically treated premolars restored with post-and-cores milled from different CAD-CAM materials., Material and Methods: Post spaces were prepared in 80 human premolars in which post-and-cores fabricated with polyetheretherketone (PK; Ceramill PEEK), nanohybrid composite resin (BB; Brava Block), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (EN; VITA Enamic), and fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (GF; Fiber Cad Post & Core) CAD-CAM materials were luted (n=20). All specimens were subjected to thermal aging (3000 cycles at 5 °C and 55 °C with a 20-second dwell time). Half of the specimens were subjected to mechanical fatigue (250 000 cycles at 5 Hz) before fracture strength testing, while the other half was submitted to POBS testing and volume of luting agent measurement. Fracture strength data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, while POBS and volume of luting agent data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis followed by the Bonferroni-Dunn multiple comparison tests. The correlation between POBS and the volume of luting agent was determined by the Spearman test (α=.05)., Results: POBS of GF was significantly higher than that for PK (P<.001); however, failure load (P=.160) and volume of luting agent (P=.390) values did not differ. EN showed the highest percentage of catastrophic failures (20%), while PK exhibited only core deformations. POBS and cement film volume were not significantly correlated (P>.05)., Conclusions: Different CAD-CAM materials did not influence the fracture strength and volume of luting agent of post-and-cores. Post-and-cores made with PEEK blocks showed lower bond strength to intracanal dentin than those made with fiber-reinforced epoxy resin blocks. Objective: To investigate the influence of blood and saliva contamination on the microshear bond strength (μSBS) between resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and resin composite (RC)., Methods and Materials: Eighty RMGIC discs were allocated into four groups (n=20). Group 1 received universal dental adhesive application in a self-etch mode followed by a build-up with RC. Group 2 received saliva as a contaminant, Group 3 received blood as a contaminant, Group 4 received a 1:1 blood-saliva mixture as a contaminant. Specimens from Groups 2, 3, and 4 were submerged into their respective contaminants for 15 seconds and dried prior to the adhesive application, followed by the protocol for Group 1. All specimens were stored in distilled water for 24 hours. Subsequently, the bonded specimens were subjected to μSBS testing using a universal testing machine. Failure mode of the debonded RMGIC surfaces was examined using scanning electron microscopy., Results: The μSBS from groups 1-4 were 10.76 ± 3.03 MPa, 9.36 ± 2.54 MPa, 6.55 ± 1.67 MPa and 8.42 ± 2.79 MPa, respectively. Contamination by blood and blood-saliva significantly decreased the μSBS (p<0.001, p=0.029). Saliva contamination alone had no statistically significant effect on the μSBS (p=0.524). A statistically significant difference in the mode of failure was detected between the experimental groups (p=0.012)., Conclusion: Saliva contamination has no influence on μSBS between RMGIC and RC when it is dried thoroughly, while blood and blood-saliva contamination reduced μSBS between RMGIC and RC even when dried thoroughly., (© Operative Dentistry, 2023.)

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the effect of solvent in universal adhesives (UA) and the application of an extra layer of hydrophobic bonding resin on enamel shear bond strengths (SBS)., Methods and Materials: Crowns of 224 bovine mandibular incisors were embedded in acrylic resin, wet-polished up to 600-grit silicon carbide paper and assigned to 3 UAs with different solvents (n=32): ethanol-based UA (ADU, AdheSE Universal, Ivoclar Vivadent); isopropanol-based UA (PBU, Prime&Bond Universal, Dentsply Sirona); and acetone-based UA (OPT, OptiBond Universal, Kerr Co). The same UAs were also applied with an extra layer of a hydrophobic bonding resin (HLB, Heliobond, Ivoclar Vivadent): ADU + HLB; PBU + HLB; and OPT + HLB. HLB alone was used as control. Enamel was etched with 37.5% H3PO4 (Kerr Gel Etchant, Kerr Co) for 15 seconds, rinsed with water, and air dried. UAs were applied according to the respective manufacturer's instructions. After adhesive application, composite cylinders (Filtek Z250, 3M Oral Care) were built up and light-cured (40 seconds/increment, 40 J/cm2) keeping the light tip in contact with the mold. Specimens were stored in water for 24 hours (24H) or for 6 months (6M). A knife-edged metallic rod (Ø=2.8-mm semicircular notch) loaded the composite cylinders until fracture. Mode of failure was analyzed with optical microscopy (40×). Statistics included twoway analysis of variance (ANOVA; adhesive strategy and water storage) and Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) post hoc test (α=95%)., Results: Mean enamel SBS ranged from 3.6 (±2.2) MPa (HLB/6M) to 24.7 (±7.1) MPa (ADU + HLB/6M). ANOVA revealed significant differences for adhesive strategy (p≤0.001) but no significant differences for water storage (p>0.05). All UAs resulted in similar mean enamel SBS with or without an extra layer of HLB at 24H. After 6M, only ADU resulted in higher enamel SBS when an extra layer of HLB was applied. All UAs resulted in higher mean enamel SBS than HLB (control). Most failures were adhesive exception for PBU/HLB/6M, which had mostly mixed failures., Conclusions: UAs resulted in statistically higher enamel SBS than the nonsolvated hydrophobic bonding resin (control), regardless of the solvent in their composition. Application of an extra layer of hydrophobic bonding resin over UAs did not improve mean enamel SBS for isopropanol- and acetone-based UAs but did improve mean enamel SBS for the ethanol-based UA after 6M. Statement of Problem: Adhesive resin cement has been the preferred choice for the placement of prosthetic restorations, but evidence-based studies supporting this selection are sparse., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that restoration placement with the adhesive 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride/methyl methacrylate-tributylborane (4-META/MMA-TBB) resin cement is associated with better longevity of teeth than zinc phosphate cement up to 43 years., Materials and Methods: Study participants were individuals who had been visiting the clinic regularly for more than 20 years from their first visit between November 1970 and April 1985. The vital teeth with prosthetic restorations (N=454), including cast inlays, onlays, crowns, and fixed partial dentures, of 53 patients were assessed from dental charts and radiographs. Most of the bonding surfaces were precious metal alloy, excluding 4 restorations cemented with zinc phosphate and 6 ceramic crowns cemented with 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test (α=.05) were used to compare longevity between the 2 materials. Chi-squared tests (α=.001) were also used to examine the occurrence rates of events such as secondary caries, endodontic treatment, and the dislodgement of restorations affecting the longevity of the 2 cements., Results: Clinical review examination demonstrated that 55.4% of teeth retained with 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement had been in service for 30 years compared with 43.5% of those retained with zinc phosphate cement, with a significant difference (P=.006). 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement also demonstrated lower event occurrence rates than zinc phosphate cement for 3 assessed types of events (P<.001)., Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, 4-META/MMA-TBB resin adhesive cement demonstrated a higher survival rate than conventional zinc phosphate cement in service for 30 years with a lower occurrence of critical events., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Statement of Problem: Anatomic-contour zirconia prostheses are usually cemented with resin cement. However, information regarding the effects of the zirconia shade and thicknesses on the translucency of the prosthesis, the intensity of the transmitted light beneath the prosthesis, and the subsequent degree of conversion in the resin cement is sparse., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the translucency parameter in 3 anatomic-contour zirconia specimens of 2 shades at 5 different thicknesses and to investigate the transmitted light intensity and degree of conversion of the resin cement beneath the ceramic specimens by using a traditional zirconia and a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic as controls., Material and Methods: Ceramic specimens from 1 anatomic-contour zirconia in a generic shade (CAP FZ) and 2 anatomic-contour zirconias in A2 shade (Zirlux and Luxisse) were used. Lithium disilicate in HT A2 shade (IPS e.max CAD) and traditional zirconia in a generic shade (CAP QZ) were used as controls. A total of 125 ceramic specimens (n=25) were fabricated to a final specimen dimension of 12×12 mm and in thicknesses of 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0 mm according to the manufacturers' recommendations. The CIELab color space for all specimens placed against a white and black background was measured with a spectrophotometer (CM-2600D), and the translucency parameters were calculated for the materials at various thicknesses. A light-polymerizing unit (DEMI LED) was used to polymerize the resin cement (Variolink II) placed beneath the ceramic specimens. Transmitted light intensity from the polymerization unit beneath the ceramic specimens was measured by using a spectrophotometer (MARC Resin Calibrator), and the transmittance of each specimen was calculated. The coefficient of absorption of each material was calculated from the regression analysis between the natural log of transmittance and specimen thickness. The degree of conversion of resin cement was measured by using a Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer. The results were analyzed by using 2-way ANOVA (α=.05). The relationship between the transmittance and the translucency parameter was evaluated by plotting the transmittance against the translucency parameter value of each specimen., Results: The translucency parameter decreased with increasing thickness in all 5 material groups. All anatomic-contour zirconia had lower translucency parameters than e.max CAD (P<.001). The same results were found for the intensity of the transmitted light (P<.001). Both A2 shade anatomic-contour zirconia (Zirlux and Luxisse) showed significantly lower light transmittance than a generic shade anatomic-contour zirconia (CAP FZ) (P<.001). The coefficients of absorption were found to range from 0.63 to 1.72 mm -1 , and reflectance from 0.10 to 0.25. The results from the degree of conversion of resin cement after polymerization through 1 to 2 mm of specimens showed a significantly higher degree of conversion in the e.max group than in all other groups (P<.001). The correlation between translucency parameter and the intensity of the transmitted light suggested that the relationship was shade dependent., Conclusions: The translucency parameter and the transmitted light intensity of ceramic material were influenced by the type of ceramic and the shade and thickness of the ceramic. The combined effects of layer thickness and the intensity of the transmitted light in the A2 shade anatomic-contour zirconia (Zirlux and Luxisse) resulted in a lower degree of conversion in resin cement than in a generic shade anatomic-contour zirconia (CAP FZ) at layer thicknesses of 1.75 and 2 mm., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Statement of Problem: Residual cement in the peri-implant sulcus may cause peri-implant mucositis, which can lead to peri-implantitis. Clinical studies comparing the role of the collar height of the definitive restoration and the type of cement used for luting the prosthesis in the amount of residual cement are lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to determine the volume of residual cement left undetected in the peri-implant sulcus by an implant prosthesis with 3 different collar heights and 3 luting cements., Material and Methods: Participants with single implants in the premolar region were divided into 3 groups of 10 according to the distance from the peri-implant soft tissue crest to the implant platform: group low collar (sulcus depth <2 mm), group medium collar (2-4 mm), and group high collar (>4 mm). A metal-ceramic crown with an occlusal opening was fabricated on a straight titanium abutment, which facilitated removal of the crown along with the abutment after cementation. The implant luting cements used were composite resin cement (RelyX U200), Type I glass ionomer cement (GC Gold Label 1), and zinc oxide noneugenol interim luting cement (RelyX Temp NE). The modified crown was cemented with 1 cement each during the impression, bisque evaluation, and definitive crown cementation appointments. The crown was retrieved, and the residual cement collected during each appointment. The measurements obtained were statistically analyzed with general linear model analysis followed by post hoc testing using the Bonferroni test (α=.05)., Results: Mean volume of the residual excess cement (mm 3 ) formed in group low collar was 0.33 ±0.17, 0.26 ±0.17, and 0.08 ±0.08 for subgroups Resin, GIC, and ZNE, respectively. In group medium collar, it was 1.18 ±0.31, 1.08 ±0.3, and 0.61 ±0.32; and in group high collar, it was 2.33 ±0.31, 2.1 ±0.74, and 1.31 ±0.56 for the same subgroup, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the formation of REC between the collar height groups (P<.001). Among the luting cements, zinc oxide noneugenol cement produced significantly lower residual cement compared with the other 2 cements, and there was no statistically significant difference between the glass ionomer and resin cements (P>.05)., Conclusions: The collar height of the definitive restoration and the type of luting cement play significant roles in the formation of residual cement in fixed implant-supported restorations., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using whitening dentifrices during at-home bleaching on the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin composite to dentin, and investigate whether the increased polymerization time would improve SBS., Methods: Ninety-six bovine incisors were divided into 4 groups of 24, according to the whitening treatment applied as follows: group 1, at-home bleaching + brushing with a regular dentifrice; group 2, at-home bleaching + brushing with a whitening dentifrice containing ozone; group 3, at-home bleaching + brushing with a commercial whitening dentifrice; and group 4 (control), no whitening/brushing treatment. Each group was divided into two subgroups (n = 12) to assess the effect of curing time (20 versus 80 s) on SBS. A self-etch adhesive was bonded to dentin, and after 2-day water storage, SBS was determined., Results: SBS was significantly affected by the whitening treatment (P = 0.03), but increasing the curing time had no significant effect on SBS (P = 0.137). Bond strength in group 1 was comparable to the control group (P > 0.05). The specimens in group 3 displayed significantly lower SBS than either group 4 or group 1 (P > 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the SBS of group 2 compared to any other group (P > 0.05). There was no significant association between the treatment group and failure type (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: The bonding interface was not negatively influenced by the at-home bleaching procedure. However, using a commercial whitening dentifrice during at-home bleaching produced a significant detrimental effect on SBS. Extending the curing time would have no beneficial effect on adhesion to a whitened dental substrate., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Statement of Problem: The influence of silver nanoparticles on adhesive properties of Single Bond Universal (3M ESPE) and the antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles-modified adhesives against Streptococcus mutans is unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of silver nanoparticles on the dentin bond strength of modified adhesives and the antibacterial activity against the cariogenic pathogen S. mutans., Material and Methods: Single Bond Universal adhesive was used as the control. Silver nanoparticles were added to adhesives at 0.05% and 0.1% (by weight) (experimental groups), and scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the uniformity of the modified adhesives. The Single Bond Universal adhesive and the modified adhesives were then used to prepare dentin-composite resin blocks. The microtensile bond strength and microleakage of the prepared dentin-composite resin blocks were determined with or without thermocycling. The colony-forming units (CFU) of S. mutans cultured with the adhesives were evaluated, and the microtensile bond strength and microleakage of each group were tested after treatment with S. mutans. The differences in the microtensile bond strength or CFU were analyzed by using the 2-way analysis of variance and independent sample t test. The differences in microleakage between the groups were evaluated by using the Mann-Whitney test (α=.05)., Results: Silver nanoparticle-modified adhesives exhibited uniform morphologies without agglomeration and exhibited a homogeneous adhesive layer in dentin-composite resin blocks. The microtensile bond strength and microleakage of the modified adhesives were similar to those of the control group, with or without thermocycling (P>.05). However, thermocycling reduced the bond strength significantly (P<.001). Self-etch adhesives incorporated with silver nanoparticles showed significant antibacterial activities after less than 6 months of aging treatment. The modified adhesives did not exhibit a decreased bond strength after S. mutans exposure (P>.05), while the control group exhibited a markedly decreased bond strength after S. mutans exposure (P<.05)., Conclusions: Silver nanoparticle-modified adhesives showed excellent antibacterial activities against S. mutans and resisted the destruction of dentin bond strength caused by S. mutans while not compromising the bonding properties of Single Bond Universal self-etch adhesives., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. The influence of different surface treatments and ageing on the shear bond strength (SBS) of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials is still contentious. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of surface treatments and ageing on the SBS of resin cement to polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) CAD/CAM materials. Specimens of PICN (n=10) and ZLS (n=10) were submitted to four surface treatment groups: 1) 5% hydrofluoric acid etching (HF) + silanisation (SI); 2) Air abrasion (AB)+HF+SI; 3) HF + universal adhesive (UA); 4) AB+HF+SI+UA. The treated specimens were bonded with resin cement cylinders and tested in SBS after 24 h and one year of water storage. Data were assessed by "analysis of variance" (ANOVA) and Tukey test (α=0.05) and failure modes were classified. No significant differences were observed among treatments at each evaluation time (p>0.05). SBS decreased after one year of storage, except for PICN treated with HF+UA (p=0.068). Air-abraded groups displayed a lower SBS reduction for ZLS. PICN and ZLS exhibited predominantly adhesive and mixed failures, but at one year, PICN cohesive failures increased. In conclusion, HF+UA is an effective surface treatment for PICN, while the combination AB+HF+SI+UA was more appropriate for ZLS. The water storage for one year reduced the SBS for most groups.

Objective: Given the importance of preserving caries-affected dentin (CAD) in conservative dentistry, the shear bond strength (SBS) of different resin cements to CAD has been investigated. Here, we aimed to compare the SBS and remineralizing effect of a calcium silicate (TheraCem) and conventional self-adhesive cement (Panavia SA) on the SBS of CAD., Materials and Methods: Forty-eight extracted third molars (24 sound and 24 CAD) were used. In each group, 12 teeth were prepared for bonding to TheraCem or Panavia SA. After removal of the enamel and caries, resin composite cylinders were luted on the prepared dentin. After 28 days of storage in the artificial saliva, SBS was measured and the failure mode analysis was investigated. The images of fractured sections were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray to evaluate the Ca/P weight ratio., Results: SBS of CAD and sound dentin was not different when cemented with TheraCem (9.56 ± 4.51 vs. 9.17 ± 2.76, p = .806), but the CAD showed significantly lower SBS to Panavia SA (9.4 ± 2.36 vs. 7.39 ± 2.18, p = .015). The Ca/P ratio in CAD was significantly higher when bonded to both TheraCem and Panavia-SA than that of the controls (p = .001); however, this ratio was not different for those bonded to TheraCem compared to Panavia SA., Conclusions: Based on our results, TheraCem as a calcium silicate cement shows better SBS to attach the restoration to CAD as compared to Panavia SA. Obliteration and mineralization of the dentinal tubules in TheraCem were also higher than in Panavia SA. Objectives: To evaluate the bond strength of a resin luting agent to a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic after the use of different fit-checking materials and cleaning protocols., Methods and Materials: Two hundred and forty-two (242) ceramic specimens were etched with 5% hydrofluoric acid for 20 seconds and distributed into 22 groups (n=10), in total. Four (4) groups were created based on fit-checking material and that had no following cleaning protocol: no fit-checking material used (control group); articulating paper; articulating spray; and fit-checker liquid. For each fit-checking material (3), 6 cleaning protocols were tested creating an additional 18 groups (n=10): air/water spray; 70% alcohol (ethanol); acetone; 35% phosphoric acid; 5% hydrofluoric acid; and a commercially available cleaning paste (Ivoclean, Ivoclar Vivadent). Silane and bonding resin were applied to all ceramic surfaces. Resin luting agent cylinders (1 mm in diameter) were created using silicone matrices, light-cured, and specimens were stored in deionized water at 37°C for 24 hours. Microshear bond strength test (μSBS) was performed on a universal testing machine (DL 500, EMIC) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. Results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05)., Results: Articulating paper and fit-checker liquid, when not properly removed, negatively affected the bond strength (p<0.05). None of the tested cleaning protocols were effective for articulating paper (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in bond strength after the cleaning protocols between articulating spray and fit-checker liquid when compared to the control group (no contamination) (p>0.05)., Conclusion: The cleaning protocols tested can effectively restore the bond strength of resin luting agents to lithium disilicate ceramics that were exposed to articulating spray or fit-checker liquid. The use of articulating paper is not recommended for fit-checking indirect lithium disilicate restorations., (©Operative Dentistry, 2022.)
