The primary objective of this paper is to examine, both theoretically and empirically, two distinct approaches through which artistic research intersects with academia. This examination is undertaken to critically evaluate the paradigmatic tensions arising from the juxtaposition of unfettered artistic exploration and the escalating pressures for demonstrable outcomes, accountability, and process transparency inherent in managerial contexts. Consequently, the theoretical underpinnings of artistic interventions within organizational settings will be explicated, emphasizing the academic community's exploration and application of such modes of artistic inquiry. Conversely, the approach of art-based research will be delineated, emphasizing its utilization of artistic modalities to investigate phenomena through a scientific lens. Moreover, prominent theories positing academic research as constraining artistic experimentation will be outlined. Finally, drawing upon four case reports conducted within academic environments, a novel method will be proposed to mitigate the encroachment of increasingly institutionalized approaches towards the arts. This paper investigates how East-West cross-cultural collaboration affects team research impact. A dataset of international collaboration articles of Chinese scholars was constructed, and then the cultural background of each researcher was traced with a surname and culture category matching process and a manual search process. Empirical analysis using negative binomial regression reveals that East-West cross-cultural collaboration has a positive effect on research impact, and culture concentration in an East-West cross-cultural team affects the research impact positively. Knowledge diversity negatively moderates the relationship between East-West cross-cultural collaboration and research impact. The cross-cultural collaboration experiences of team members and the strength of ties between current East-West cultural collaborators positively moderate the relationship between East-West cross-cultural collaboration and team research impact. Suggestions for personal collaboration strategy and institutional research management policies are presented: scholars participating in an East-West cross-cultural team with high culture concentration can be helpful in achieving high-impact research. For institutions, promoting East-West cross-cultural collaboration will enrich scholars' cross-cultural collaboration experience, which will support future cross-cultural collaboration. This study unveils the establishment of the United Kingdom-Netherlands Decomposition Experimental Research (UNDER) working group, marking a pioneering initiative in practical Forensic Taphonomy within the UK. Our primary objective was to craft a cohesive multidisciplinary framework, designed to ethically orchestrate, execute, and assess human decomposition. Concurrently, we aimed to amass data through human burials, fostering collaboration among diverse forensic experts across Europe. The compilation of data collected over the year, elucidates the comprehensive utilisation of cadavers through a multifaceted scientific methodology. This paper discusses the triumphs, challenges, and innovative solutions encountered during this undertaking, providing a blueprint for forthcoming European research in Forensic Taphonomy. Our efforts support the comparability of longitudinal studies and give strategies to address the challenges posed by the scarcity and diversity of human donors in forensic science. Moreover, we propose the adoption of a dynamic scientific research management framework, which includes thorough identification, measurement, analysis, and application of solutions. Research performance evaluation indicators can be used in research and financial policy-making, as well as the promotion of researchers and universities in a country. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the challenges of research performance evaluation in Iran. Participants in this qualitative study were selected using a purposive sampling method. 11 Out of 21 experts from the two areas of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology and the Ministry of Health and Medical Education were interviewed face-to-face, by telephone, and WhatsApp social media based on an interview guide. Interviews were analyzed with MaxQDA software version 10. Most of the participants were male (54%), had a Ph.D. degree in library and information science (54%), and had at least four years of research management and scientometric experience (36%). The analysis of the interviews included 143 codes in the form of six main categories and 50 sub-categories. The most critical challenges included a lack of normalization in research evaluation, lack of suitable scientometric training, lack of importance of scientometrics in research management, the necessity to change the scientometricians role, absence of scientometrician in research policy-making, the focus of universities ranking systems on research indicators, the emphasis of universities ranking systems on quantity, the over-focus on quantitative indicators, the incompleteness of scientometric indicators, the lack of proper application of scientometric indicators, the role of scientometricians in improving the research quality, and the need for balanced attention to the quantity and quality of research. Overall, the research performance evaluation in Iran is facing the challenges of globalization of research performance measurement, providing sufficient research infrastructures, the position of scientometrics in research policy, university ranking systems, application of scientometric indicators, and inefficiency of the research management.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the formulation of research problems in management science, highlighting the importance of a structured research methodology and its connection to both theory and practice. The paper seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research and business practice in the discipline of management. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on an extensive literature review and theoretical analysis of the development of management science. The methodological approach includes examining historical methods in management research, analyzing their evolution, and proposing a model for structuring the research process. The paper emphasizes methodological triangulation and the relevance of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings: The analysis reveals that management science has evolved significantly, from industrial efficiency to modern paradigms that include flexibility, sustainability, and innovation. The formulation of research problems in management science is driven by both theoretical inquiry and practical application, requiring a balance of qualitative and quantitative methods. The paper identifies the importance of methodological pluralism and the necessity of bridging theory with practice in modern management research. Research limitations/implications: The research primarily focuses on the theoretical development of management science and does not include empirical testing. Future research should aim to test the proposed models and frameworks in practical settings to validate their applicability and effectiveness. Practical implications: The paper offers insights into how businesses can benefit from structured research methodologies in management science, providing a guide for managers to apply academic research to real-world business problems. It encourages businesses to adopt flexible and innovative management practices, supported by rigorous research methods. Purpose: The article presents an analysis of the results of winning projects raising fundamental questions about human nature and the surrounding reality, implemented within the National Science Center (NSC) in Poland. The research goal is to check whether these projects meet the expectations set out in the Act on the National Science Center and whether they support the development of philosophical research. Design/methodology/approach: The research is based on the quantitative content analysis of 596 projects completed between 2011 and 2023. We are essentially interested in the following aspects: • what is the position of the fundamental questions about the human nature and the surrounding reality in the structure of the NSC investigated research projects (HS1 position in the NSC projects structure, project managers affiliations, their sex and position in the scientific hierarchy), • what problems are favoured in grants (preferred by the collective subject, i.e. authors and reviewers), • whether one can assess the ideological preferences of the collective subject behind the winning projects and how this can be done. For the purpose of comparison we juxtapose the grants’ content with the data on philosophy available on Google scholar and The National Library catalogue. Findings: The analysis enabled us to state that the analysed grants do not undertake problems which are of key importance for philosophy, in particular they do not tackle the contemporary philosophical challenges. The reason of such a situation is the ethos of philosophy held by both the projects’ authors and their reviewers. Such ethos constitutes a barrier preventing philosophers from pursuing the socially important problems. In this way, the study contributes to the analysis of research management in Poland. Social implications: The conclusions formulated in this article might trigger a debate on the content of philosophical ethos in Poland. Background: The Measures for Management of Investigator-Initiated Studies (IISs) Conducted by Healthcare Institutions (trial version) (referred to as Management Measures) has been piloted successively in 12 provincial regions across China since 1 October 2021 and took effect nationwide on 1 October 2024. This study aimed to examine the perspectives, attitudes and challenges of administrators and investigators within healthcare institutions in Beijing regarding IIS management to provide further strategic guidance in China. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study included 13 focus group discussions among 74 participants from 25 healthcare institutions stratified selected in Beijing, including 13 executive-level administrators, 41 functional administrators and 20 investigator representatives. The focus groups were conducted from November to December 2021. The discussion topics focussed on current status of IIS management in healthcare institutions and the participants' attitudes and challenges in implementation of the Management Measures, mainly on the specific management system establishment, independent scientific review, management by study type and whole-process supervision. Results: Opinions varied among institution presidents/directors regarding the establishment of clinical research management committees and offices, with significant challenges identified in insufficient human resources and difficulties in integrating with existing management models. While scientific review was seen as essential, there was disagreement on how to implement it. Interviewees raised concerns about redundancy for grant-supported projects, unclear distinctions between scientific and ethical reviews, efficiency delays, reviewer qualifications and intellectual property risks. Although management by study type might help control risks, the qualification restrictions on the leading sites and investigators were viewed as excessively stringent. No institution has achieved whole-process supervision of all IISs, primarily due to insufficient human resources, ineffective supervision and management systems, and insufficiently trained professionals. Conclusions: This study reveals that the current management of IISs is generally weak in Beijing and should be strengthened by implementing Management Measures. However, major challenges existed for the implementation, mainly including: a lack of clear and feasible management models to follow, insufficient human resources for both scientific review and whole-process supervision, and worries about restricting research initiatives. It takes time to overcome these challenges, which may be achieved through building management capacity at national, regional and institutional levels, learning successful management models that were piloted in various regions and further policy research to develop specific guidance. This descriptive study aimed in finding out the implementation of Research Management Guidelines of schools in the basic education. The independent variables focused on the teachers' educational attainment and rank while the level of implementation of the research management guidelines as the dependent variable. The participants of the study were the 140 elementary teachers of the District of Calinog II chosen through random sampling answered the survey instrument and 7 out of the 140 participants responded in the interview to gather the qualitative data. The quantitative data was analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, t-test for independent samples and One Way Analysis of Variance as statistical tools The level of significance was set at 0.05 alpha. Thematic analysis was used to analyzed the qualitative data. The findings of this study revealed that the level of implementation of research management guidelines of schools in basic education as an entire group and when classified as to educational attainment and rank was average. There is a significant difference in the level of implementation of research management guidelines of schools in basic education when the respondents were classified as to educational attainment. There is no significant difference in the level of implementation of research management guidelines of schools in basic education when the respondents were classified as to rank. The difficulties they encountered in the implementation of the research management guidelines: (1) Limited Knowledge in Research; (2) Much Workload; (3) Overlapping Activities and; 4) Lack of Resources. African universities have been tasked by their governments to develop and build research capacity, performance, and output, which puts a focus on university research management. Paying attention to research management is very important for any country trying to improve its research performance. However, university research management is an area that has been neglected. This study focused on finding out factors research managers perceive to be hindering university research management. The qualitative methodology was used. The study population comprised 25 research managers from two English-taught Cameroonian universities. This study found that factors research managers perceive to be hindering research management include conflict between research managers and researchers, politics, and corruption in research management, inadequate skilful research managers, limited research facilities, inadequate salaries, and lack of extrinsic motivation. Analyses of the practical relevance of costing methods are based on a narrow range of evaluative factors, progressively distancing themselves from the technical essence of these methods. This article examines how a better understanding of the foundational technical underpinnings can enrich the analysis of the practical relevance of a costing method. To do this, we draw on interventionist research in a French cancer centre, where the costing method, prescribed and transposed from private management methods, is widely criticized by its users and rarely analyzed in‐depth. From a theoretical point of view, the results of this article propose a model for analyzing the practical relevance of a costing method. By progressively modifying the calculation techniques of this costing method, the application of this model to the costing method studied highlights four criteria for the technical analysis of the practical relevance of this method, two of which have already been identified in the literature (cost traceability and causality), and two of which have not yet been identified (exhaustiveness of cost centres and cost/value articulation). These four criteria represent the characteristics of this method by which any change in its calculation technique also modifies its practical relevance. From a methodological point of view, this article also shows how a better knowledge of the elements of practical relevance of a costing method can facilitate the success of interventionist research in management accounting. Objective To understand the current status of work stress among full -time research staff in public hospitals, analyze the problems in research management, and propose the targeted countermeasures and suggestions. Methods In August 2022, the full -time research staff in six public hospitals in Shanghai, chosen by a purposive sampling method, were surveyed with a self-designed Work Stress Source Scale for Full-time Research Staff in Public Hospitals. The work stress status and differences among the above staff with different characteristics were analyzed, and the correlation between the scores in various dimensions was examined. Results 231 questionnaires were distributed, and 212 valid questionnaires were obtained, with an effective recovery rate of 91.8%. The scores in various dimensions of the scale were as follows: the highest score was (4.02 ± 0.81) for workload pressure, followed by (4.01 ± 0.70) for work difficulty, (3.70 ± 0.81) for assessment pressure, (3.46 ± 0.86) for role ambiguity, and (3.42 ± 0.94) for job recognition. The overall work stress score was (3.72 ± 0.62), and on the overall score of work stress. Staff who had undertaken provincial or ministerial -level research projects had higher stress scores (P < 0.01); the higher the education level, the higher the scores in workload and work difficulty dimensions (both P < 0.01). There were statistically significant differences in the scores of workload and work difficulty dimensions among full-time research staff in different positions (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), with the highest stress levels among research staff. The higher the professional title, the higher the workload dimension score (P < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the role ambiguity dimension scores among full -time research staff in different departments (P < 0.05), with clinical department staff scoring the highest, followed by staff in central laboratories, both higher than those in research institutes or research parks. Staff who had undertaken provincial or ministerial -level research projects had higher scores in workload, work difficulty, and job recognition dimensions (all P < 0.01). There were positive correlations between scores in various dimensions of the scale (r = 0.348 to 0.613, all P < 0.01). Conclusions Full-time research staff in public hospitals experienced significant work stress. Relevant hospital departments should actively take measures to reduce the workload of research staff, reasonably allocate work difficulty, improve job recognition, and alleviate the pressure of role ambiguity. Introduction: The focus on quantitative indicators–number of publications and grants, journal impact factors, Hirsch-index–has become pervasive in research management, funding systems, and research and publication practices (SES). Accountability through performance measurement has become the gold standard to increase productivity and (cost-) efficiency in academia. Scientific careers are strongly shaped by the push to produce more in a veritable 'publish or perish' culture. To this end, we investigated the perspectives of biomedical researchers on responsible assessment criteria that foster responsible conduct of research. Methods: We performed a qualitative focus group study among 3 University medical centers in the Netherlands. In these centers, we performed 2 randomly selected groups of early career researchers (PhD and postdoc level & senior researchers (associate and full professors) from these 3 institutions and explored how relational responsibilities relate to responsible conduct of research and inquired how potential (formal) assessment criteria could correspond with these responsibilities. Results: In this study we highlighted what is considered responsible research among junior and senior researchers in the Netherlands and how this can be assessed in formal assessment criteria. The participants reflected on responsible research and highlighted several academic responsibilities (such as supervision, collaboration and teaching) that are often overlooked and that are considered a crucial prerequisite for responsible research. As these responsibilities pertain to intercollegiate relations, we henceforth refer to them as relational. After our systematic analysis of these relational responsibilities, participants suggested some ideas to improve current assessment criteria. We focused on how these duties can be reflected in multidimensional, concrete and sustainable assessment criteria. Focus group participants emphasized the importance of assessing team science (both individual as collective), suggested the use of a narrative in researcher assessment and valued the use of 360 degrees assessment of researchers. Participants believed that these alternative assessments, centered on relational responsibilities, could help in fostering responsible research practices. However, participants stressed that unclarity about the new assessment criteria would only cause more publication stress and insecurity about evaluation of their performance. Conclusion: Our study suggests that relational responsibilities should ideally play a more prominent role in future assessment criteria as they correspond with and aspire the practice of responsible research. Our participants gave several suggestions how to make these skills quantifiable and assessable in future assessment criteria. However, the development of these criteria is still in its infancy, implementation can cause uncertainties among those assessed and consequently, future research should focus on how to make these criteria more tangible, concrete and applicable in daily practice to make them applicable to measure and assess responsible research practices in institutions. The article establishes how a membership association, following shared and intersecting strategies around competency and professional recognition frameworks, extends research management and administration (RMA) professionalization. Computer-mediated design using asynchronous sources provided data for thematic, narrative analysis within an interpretive, qualitative approach. The Association was found to be an expert organization proficient in using boundary-spanning strategies that were shared systemically to advance RMA professionalization, specifically in the Global South. Individual research managers and administrators (RMAs) also may claim their experiential spaces more powerfully, even in contradictory academic domains where qualifications are prized. This is supported by an open-ended system, emblematic of the complexities of this day. The setting of standards for professionalization of RMA has secondary, yet targeted, impact on policies and practices of funding agencies and governments who invest in science and research. The study has surfaced the nature of boundary spanning within RMA professionalization focusing on competency and professional recognition frameworks, areas on which literature is mostly silent. Prior research highlights that rural populations have been historically underrepresented/excluded from clinical research. The primary objective of this study was to describe the inclusion of rural populations within our research enterprise using Clinical Research Management System demographic information at a large academic medical center in the Southeast. This was a cross‐sectional study using participant demographic information for all protocols entered into our Clinical Research Management System between May 2018 and March 2021. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the representation of rural and non‐rural participants and demographic breakdown by age, sex, race, and ethnicity for our entire enterprise and at the state level. We also compared Material Community Deprivation Index levels between urban and rural participants. Results indicated that 19% of the research population was classified as rural and 81% as non‐rural for our entire sample, and 17.5% rural and 82.5% urban for our state‐level sample. There were significant differences in race, sex, and age between rural and non‐rural participants and Material Community Deprivation Indices between rural and non‐rural participants. Europe's transportation infrastructure including bridges requires optimised maintenance plans and adequate monitoring throughout its life cycle to ensure safety and serviceability. The deployment of new technologies can help this goal, providing numerous advantages compared to existing and established inspection and monitoring methods. This deployment can be facilitated by adequate policies and focused research and innovation, taking also into account the European ambitions for safe, secure, and future-proof transportation infrastructure. Considering the above, the objective of this study is threefold. First, it provides an overview of recent policy initiatives in Europe that facilitate the adoption of new and emerging technologies in bridge inspection and monitoring, as well as maintenance in general. Second, it identifies and reviews R&I projects relevant to bridges, including the budgetary expenditure, from the Horizon 2020 European Research Framework Programme which was recently concluded. Finally, it systematically reviews technologies and solutions developed by the identified projects, assessing also their technology readiness. What emerges is substantial research, which includes solutions and technologies (e.g., use of air or ground drones, artificial intelligence, digital twins) that have the potential to reshape the bridge inspection and monitoring state of play in Europe and beyond. Research Infrastructures (RI) and Core Facilities (CF) are strong drivers for generating research results and, thus, knowledge at European Universities. In this paper, we provide insight into different features of RI and CF, their organisational structure and governance, funding mechanisms, critical factors for success, and challenges and opportunities associated with implementing and operating these research support structures. Our results are based on a comparative analysis across six European universities from the 4EU + University Alliance. Due to the lack of a clear definition of RI and CF, we provide a variety of indicators and criteria attributed to such facilities and highlight differences between CF and RI in terms of goals and objectives. If establishing Core Facilities is seen as a response to the evolving needs and challenges of researchers, a centralised management and collaborative governance model can provide a practical solution. We explore the legal framework, organisation, access, users and charge rate models at Core Facilities. We also identify several challenges in setting up and maintaining Core Facilities. Special attention is directed towards staff challenges, including introducing the staff category of ‘scientific technical experts’. Finally, we present a Core Facility Manifesto and share our conclusions.

Changing relationships between government and the higher education system have created a wide range of new tasks within universities. Many have been adopted by an emerging workforce known alternately as professional, non-academic, or support staff. Its rapid growth has sparked a debate about 'administrative bloat'. We aim to move beyond this negative, dismissive framing by reviewing the literature to explore whether and how professional staff influence academic knowledge development. While this specific question has received little scholarly attention, we found relevant research in 54 documents from a diffuse group of journals and authors. Our review makes two specific contributions. First, we examine the competencies and relationships of professional staff and their influence on conditions and processes in universities. We find that professional staff increasingly have a private sector background, but that the implications of such a background for competencies remain opaque. Furthermore, their relationships with university leadership and academics as well as actors beyond the home organization place them in strategic positions in their networks. We claim that their involvement in strategy development and implementation, daily management, and academic practices demonstrate a potential to influence knowledge development. Second, we propose a research agenda to understand this influence. The agenda is built around the institutional logics of professional staff, the institutional work that they engage in to promote these logics, and the resulting influence on knowledge development. We hypothesize that professional staff stimulate convergence in knowledge production and strengthen the higher education system's external legitimacy as a producer of knowledge. A text generation based multidisciplinary problem identification method is proposed, which does not rely on a large amount of data annotation. The proposed method first identifies the research objective types and disciplinary labels of papers using a text classification technique; second, it generates abstractive titles for each paper based on abstract and research objective types using a generative pre-trained language model; third, it extracts problem phrases from generated titles according to regular expression rules; fourth, it creates problem relation networks and identifies the same problems by exploiting a weighted community detection algorithm; finally, it identifies multidisciplinary problems based on the disciplinary labels of papers. Experiments in the "Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality" field show that the proposed method can effectively identify multidisciplinary research problems. The disciplinary distribution of the identified problems is consistent with our understanding of multidisciplinary collaboration in the field. It is necessary to use the proposed method in other multidisciplinary fields to validate its effectiveness. Multidisciplinary problem identification helps to gather multidisciplinary forces to solve complex real-world problems for the governments, fund valuable multidisciplinary problems for research management authorities, and borrow ideas from other disciplines for researchers. This study identifies and discusses strategies for enhancing the efficiency of technology transferring from university to the industrial sector, concerning activities carried out by Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs). The study answers two research questions: (i) What barriers hamper academic research transferring to industry? (ii) What are the inbound and outbound strategies for transferring academic research results to industry? Our findings show that the main barriers that hamper technology transfer are related to organisational, technical, human, and cultural factors comprising the academic and industrial environments. Regarding strategies, our findings reveal a comprehensive list of inbound and outbound strategies that might be implemented to cope with the ambidextrous nature of the TTOs and increase technology transfer. Profound changes due to Open-Access (OA) publications lead to organizational changes in universities and libraries. This study examines Israeli librarians' perceptions regarding their role and the academic library's role in promoting OA-publications, including the barriers, challenges, needs, and requirements necessary to promote OA publishing. Lack of a budget for OA-agreements, no cooperation from university management, and researchers' unfamiliarity with OA were among the most prominent barriers. Librarians see great importance in their role of advising researchers regarding OA.
