Protein-rich diets shorten lifespan but increase fecundity in many organisms. Animals actively adjust their feeding behavior to meet their nutritional requirements. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the dynamic regulation of protein consumption remain unclear. Here we find that both sexes of fruit flies exhibit a preference for protein food before mating to prepare for reproduction. Mated female flies display an increased appetite for yeast to benefit their offspring, albeit at the cost of stress resistance and lifespan. In contrast, males show a momentarily reduced yeast appetite after mating likely to restore their fitness. This mating state-dependent switch between sexes is mediated by a sexually dimorphic neural circuit labeled with leucokinin in the anterior brain. Aims: Clinical data supports electroacupuncture (EA) as an effective treatment for female reproductive disorders especially gonadotropin abnormalities. This study aims to detect the mechanism of EA that improves the neuroendocrine defects particularly the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge failure in early reproductive aging females., Materials and Methods: Middle-aged ovariectomized rats primed with hormone were treated by EA at acupoints CV4 and SP6 and undergone LH assay. Morphological experiments detected the activation of Kiss1 cells in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV). Using targeted liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and RNA-sequencing, we determined the concentrations of neurotransmitter metabolites and transcriptomics in AVPV., Key Findings: EA significantly increased c-Fos and c-Fos-positive Kiss1 cells in the middle-aged AVPV as well as the total and peak LH release. Targeted LC-MS/MS and RNA-sequencing of AVPV identified differential neurotransmitters in the middle-aged females including Acetylcholine chloride, 5-Hydroxyindole-3-aceticacid, Kynurenine, Histamine, L-Histidine and L-Glycine, while EA decreased the concentration of Acetylcholine chloride. Totally 1255 differentially expressed genes modulated by EA were strongly implicated in neurotransmitter transport and KEGG pathways involved neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, glutamatergic and gamma-aminobutyric acid-mediated synapse. Aims: Many studies demonstrated reproductive damage in men residing in plains who are exposed to hypoxia at high altitudes. However, little is known about mechanisms between male reproductive impairment and hypobaric hypoxia. Hypoxia is one of the reasons for the imbalance of cellular redox system. Ferroptosis, involved in many pathophysiological progresses, is an oxidative damage-related, iron-dependent regulated cell death, which needs exogenous inducer. In our study, we explored the mechanism between hypoxia and male reproductive dysfunction., Materials and Methods: Here, we established animal model simulating hypobaric hypoxia at an altitude of 5000 m and used ELISA, WB, qPCR, flow cytometry and etc. to obtain different results., Key Findings: The results demonstrated decrease of plasma testosterone (T) and free testosterone (FT) levels under hypoxia, meanwhile there's decline in sperm counts and sperm motility, coupled with increase in sperm malformation rates. Flow cytometry confirmed significant reduction in Leydig cell numbers. Prussian blue staining showed iron depositions in interstitial testis. Features of ferroptosis such as increased MDA (malondialdehyde) levels, reduced solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11, xCT) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression were observed in testis after hypoxic exposure. Further in vitro experiments, we observed that hypoxia suppressed xCT-GPX4 pathway and enhanced cellular ROS accumulation to lead Leydig cell proliferation activity decline., Significance: Our findings firstly indicated that hypoxia leads to male reproductive dysfunction via inducing Leydig cell ferroptosis. Background: The evolutionary success of flowering plants is associated with the vast diversity of their reproductive structures. Despite recent progress in understanding angiosperm-wide trends in floral structure and evolution, a synthetic view of the diversity in seed form and function across angiosperms is lacking., Scope: Here we present a roadmap to synthesize the diversity of seed forms in extant angiosperms, relying on the morphospace concept, i.e. a mathematical representation which relates multiple traits and describes the realized morphologies. We provide recommendations on how to broaden the range of measurable traits beyond mass, by using key morphological traits representative of the embryo, endosperm and seed coat but also fruit attributes (e.g. dehiscence, fleshiness). These key traits were used to construct and analyse a morphospace to detect evolutionary trends and gain insight into how morphological traits relate to seed functions. Finally, we outline challenges and future research directions, combining the morphospace with macroevolutionary comparative methods to underline the drivers that gave rise to the diversity of observed seed forms., Conclusions: We conclude that this multidimensional approach has the potential, although still untapped, to improve our understanding of covariation among reproductive traits, and further elucidate angiosperm reproductive biology as a whole., (© The Author(s) 2024. Background and Aims: Pollination failure occurs from insufficient pollen quantity or quality. However, the relative contributions of pollen quantity vs. quality to overall pollen limitation, and how this is affected by the co-flowering context, remain unknown for most plant populations. Here, we studied patterns of pollen deposition and pollen tube formation across populations of four predominately outcrossing species in the genus Clarkia to evaluate how the richness of co-flowering congeners affects the contribution of pollen quantity and quality to pollen limitation., Methods: We partition variation in pollen deposition and pollen tube production across individuals, populations and species to identify the main sources of variation in components of reproductive success. We further quantify the relative contribution of pollen quantity and quality limitation to the reproductive success of the four Clarkia species using piecewise regression analyses. Finally, we evaluate how variation in the number of co-flowering Clarkia species in the community affects the strength of pollen quality and quality limitation., Results: Across all contexts, pollen deposition and the proportion of pollen tubes produced varied greatly among individuals, populations and species, and these were not always correlated. For instance, C. xantiana received the smallest pollen loads yet produced the highest proportion of pollen tubes, while C. speciosa exhibited the opposite pattern. Yet, co-flowering richness had variable effects on the strength of pollen quantity and quality limitation among populations. Specifically, breakpoint values, which are an indicator of overall pollen limitation, were two-fold higher in the four-species community compared with one- and two-species communities for two Clarkia species, suggesting that pollen limitation can increase with increasing richness of co-flowering congeners., Conclusions: Our results reveal a complex interplay between the quantity and quality of pollen limitation and co-flowering context that may have different evolutionary outcomes across species and populations., (© The Author(s) 2024. Over recent decades, advancements in omics technologies, such as proteomics, genomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and microbiomics, have significantly enhanced our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying various physiological and pathological processes. Nonetheless, the analysis and interpretation of vast omics data concerning reproductive diseases are complicated by the cyclic regulation of hormones and multiple other factors, which, in conjunction with a genetic makeup of an individual, lead to diverse biological responses. Reproductomics investigates the interplay between a hormonal regulation of an individual, environmental factors, genetic predisposition (DNA composition and epigenome), health effects, and resulting biological outcomes. It is a rapidly emerging field that utilizes computational tools to analyze and interpret reproductive data, with the aim of improving reproductive health outcomes. It is time to explore the applications of reproductomics in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying infertility, identification of potential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment, and in improving assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Reproductomics tools include machine learning algorithms for predicting fertility outcomes, gene editing technologies for correcting genetic abnormalities, and single cell sequencing techniques for analyzing gene expression patterns at the individual cell level. However, there are several challenges, limitations and ethical issues involved with the use of reproductomics, such as the applications of gene editing technologies and their potential impact on future generations are discussed. The review comprehensively covers the applications and advancements of reproductomics, highlighting its potential to improve reproductive health outcomes and deepen our understanding of reproductive molecular mechanisms.

Life-history information is necessary for effective conservation, aquaculture development and broodstock management of fishing populations, especially for fish with significant economic exploitation. Aiming to characterise the life-history traits in relation to the environmental parameters of the long-whiskered catfish, Mystus aor, a commercially important species from Kaptai Lake, Bangladesh, different life-history data were analysed. The monthly condition factor (K) ranged from 1.15 to 1.41, and the relative condition factor (Kn) ranged from 0.14 to 0.25. The estimated relative fecundity was 18474-55504 eggs/per fish, and the maximal oocyte diameter was found in May (0.83 ± 0.11μm). The lengths at first sexual maturity (Lm) for male and female M. aor were 49.5 cm and 54.1 cm, respectively. The GSI was peaked in May for both males and females, and histological analysis also revealed the presence of yolk granules and several mature spermatids in April and May in both sexes. Analysis of environmental data over 40 years in the Kaptai lake ecosystem indicate the significant increase in the precipitation rate in spawning month which is highly correlated with the spawning season. Not much is known about the changes in bone density due to fish reproductive migration. We used micro-CT and inferential statistics to determine whether the relative bone density in the skulls of adult Three-lips fish, that seasonally upstream migrated to a Lake Biwa tributary, changed across their known reproductive season. The relative bone density significantly decreased as standard length and condition factor (K) increased in both sexes. This negative relationship is likely due to age and hormonal effects in the fish. Results from the bone density analysis also revealed that male Three-lips fish had potentially lower relative bone density (although not significantly different) than females during peak reproductive migration, i.e., July to August. On average, male Three-lips fish are larger in length and weight than females, and in many species, females prefer larger males to smaller males, viewing their size as an indicator of genetic fitness and their ability to provide protection. Resources in the skulls of Three-lips males may be distributed in such a way that increases reproductive success, i.e., size at the expense of quality. In addition, individuals with slightly less dense bones, particularly males, appeared later than those with denser bones during the peak of the reproductive season. The high energy demands involved with aggression in males, often requires resource mobilization from various tissue compartments and could explain the slightly lower density in the latter half of the peak migration. Furthermore, Three-lips individuals that migrated earlier and later during the reproductive season may have more energy reserves than those that had been in the river for some time, hence the variable bone density between individuals. Otopheidomenidae include 30 species of parasites of insects. These mites occur in areas with warm and hot climates. The only exception is Hemipteroseius adleri, the distribution of which reaches the central European region, which is characterised by a moderate climate with below-zero temperatures in winter. In Europe, H. adleri only parasitises the red firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus). Field observations indicate that only fertilised females of H. adleri survive winter conditions. The aim of the study therefore was to evaluate the impact of air temperature on the development and survival of H. adleri. A research model was established involving mites parasitising red firebugs in laboratory conditions at 15, 20, 25 and 30 °C. After oviposition, no egg development was possible at 15 °C. Egg development began at 20 °C, however the egg-to-adult period lasted for 13 days and larval mortality was significantly higher at this temperature than at 25 and 30 °C. At the latter tem temperatures, mites matured fastest (five and four days, respectively). The net reproductive rate (R 0 ) was 10.8, the mean generation time was (T) 14.4 (SD = 0.273), the intrinsic rate of population increase (r m ) was 0.165 (SD = 0.003), and the finite rate of population increase (λ) was 1.12. At 25 °C, H. adleri required 4.2 days to double its population. The results indicate that the thermal conditions prevailing in early spring in central Europe are highly unfavourable for the effective reproduction of H. adleri. Reverse development, or the ability to rejuvenate by morphological reorganization into the preceding life cycle stage is thought to be restricted to a few species within Cnidaria. To date, Turritopsis dohrnii is the only known species capable of undergoing reverse development after the onset of sexual reproduction. Here, we demonstrate that the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi is capable of reversal from mature lobate to early cydippid when fed following a period of stress. Our findings illuminate central aspects of ctenophore development, ecology, and evolution and show the high potential of M. leidyi as a unique model system to study reverse development and rejuvenation. We chose the "natural laboratory" provided by high-altitude native ethnic Tibetan women who had completed childbearing to examine the hypothesis that multiple oxygen delivery traits were associated with lifetime reproductive success and had genomic associations. Four hundred seventeen (417) women aged 46 to 86 y residing at ≥3,500 m in Upper Mustang, Nepal, provided information on reproductive histories, sociocultural factors, physiological measurements, and DNA samples for this observational cohort study. Simultaneously assessing multiple traits identified combinations associated with lifetime reproductive success measured as the number of livebirths. Women with the most livebirths had distinctive hematological and cardiovascular traits. A hemoglobin concentration near the sample mode and a high percent of oxygen saturation of hemoglobin raised arterial oxygen concentration without risking elevated blood viscosity. We propose ongoing stabilizing selection on hemoglobin concentration because extreme values predicted fewer livebirths and directional selection favoring higher oxygen saturation because higher values had more predicted livebirths. EPAS1, an oxygen homeostasis locus with strong signals of positive natural selection and a high frequency of variants occurring only among populations indigenous to the Tibetan Plateau, associated with hemoglobin concentration. High blood flow into the lungs, wide left ventricles, and low hypoxic heart rate responses aided effective convective oxygen transport to tissues. Women with physiologies closer to unstressed, low altitude values had the highest lifetime reproductive success. Tributaries provide temporal and spatial habitat heterogeneity in river networks that can be critical for parts of the life history of a species. Tributary fidelity can benefit individual fish undergoing spawning migrations by reducing time and energy spent exploring new areas and leveraging previous experience, but anthropogenic activities that fragment or degrade these systems can eliminate those benefits. We used multistate models based on passive integrated transponder (PIT) detection data from 2013 to 2023 to estimate the proportion of flannelmouth suckers (Catostomus latipinnis) migrating to a tributary, McElmo Creek, from the mainstem San Juan River for spawning. Survival varied among years and among states. The top model for migration probability included sex, with males slightly more likely to migrate (0.93 vs 0.90), and the next model identified interannual variation in migration probability ranging from 0.875 to 0.999 across years, indicating high site fidelity. Individuals showed consistency in relative arrival timing across years, with the highest correlation generally during years with greater spring discharge and extended tributary residence time. Successful tributary spawning may be important for the maintenance of the mainstem San Juan River flannelmouth sucker population, but site fidelity may be maladaptive where tributaries are vulnerable to human alterations., (© 2024. Sexual selection, one of the central pillars of evolutionary theory, has powerful effects on organismal morphology, behaviour, and population dynamics. However, current knowledge about geographical variation in this evolutionary mechanism and its underlying drivers remains highly incomplete, in part because standardised data on the strength of sexual selection is sparse even for well-studied organisms. Here, we use information on mating systems-including the incidence of polygamy and extra-pair paternity-to estimate the intensity of sexual selection in 10,671 (>99.9%) bird species distributed worldwide. We show that avian sexual selection varies latitudinally, peaking at higher latitudes, although the gradient is reversed in the world's most sexually selected birds-specialist frugivores-which are strongly associated with tropical forests. Phylogenetic models further reveal that the strength of sexual selection is explained by temperature seasonality coupled with a suite of climate-associated factors, including migration, diet, and territoriality. Overall, these analyses suggest that climatic conditions leading to short, intense breeding seasons, or highly abundant and patchy food resources, increase the potential for polygamy in birds, driving latitudinal gradients in sexual selection. Predation, a major cause of natural selection, is classically thought to target the weak and sick. However, predators can target animals with condition-dependent sexual traits, and therefore, high-quality individuals can also be the focus of predation. Thus, it is not always clear which individuals are the foci of predators or how this affects trait evolution. Here, we tested for evolutionary effects of sex-specific predation on male and female longevity using replicate populations of the broad-horned flour beetle Gnatocerus cornutus . We found that male-limited predation resulted in the evolution of reduced male and increased female longevity, while female-limited predation had no effects on the longevity of either sex. We also document the costs of reproduction. Coupled with other findings, our results suggest that predation impacts high-quality males and, because of negative intersexual genetic correlations, this increases female longevity.

Background: Voluntary waiting period (VWP), housing systems and the presence of a veterinarian are effective factors on reproductive performance of a dairy farm., Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the management practices associated with VWP and its effects on reproductive performance., Methods: A total of 136,943 records of 21,756 cows that calved between 1990 and 2013 were used. A questionnaire was also conducted with the farms involved to determine if they adjust the timing of insemination based on the body condition score (BCS) of the cows, postpartum health situation (PPHS) or environmental factors such as heat stress and season. The impact of changing the VWP selectively, the presence of a veterinarian and the type of barn on reproductive outcomes like days open (DO), number of services per conception (NSPC) and days to first service (DFS) was examined using a linear mixed model. This model considered animals and herds as random factors and management practices as fixed factors in the analysis., Results: Among herds that reported altering the VWP based on heat stress, DFS significantly increased (61.68 ± 0.68 vs. 58.4 ± 0.83) while DO (119.70 ± 1.86 vs. 126.9 ± 2.29) and NSPC (1.98 ± 0.04 vs. 2.48 ± 0.05) reduced compared to herds that did not alter the VWP. Our results showed that farms with a full-time veterinarian had a better reproductive performance than those with part-time care (p < 0.05). The Arabian goby, Cryptocentroides arabicus (Gobiidae: Gobiinae), is a significant species in marine and brackish water ecosystems. However, limited information is available about the reproductive biology and the early life history of this species. This study aimed to understand the embryonic and pre-larval development of C. arabicus under controlled laboratory conditions using light microscopy. Ten fish pairs were placed in five 70-L glass aquaria, and environmental parameters were carefully monitored. After 4 months, spawning began, with each event yielding between 700 and 1500 eggs, totaling 10 spawning events. The elliptical-shaped eggs, measuring 3.9 ± 0.1 mm in length and 1.6 mm in maximum width, hatched after 7 days and 4 h at a water temperature of 28°C. This process resulted in the identification of eight distinct larval developmental stages. Parental care by both the male and female was observed during the incubation period. Documenting the morphological changes during incubation contributes to a better understanding of the reproductive behaviour and early life history of C. arabicus. Gonadal sex steroid hormones are well-studied modulators of reproductive physiology and behavior. Recent behavioral endocrinology research has focused on how the brain dynamically responds to - and may even produce - sex steroids, but the gonadal tissues that primarily release these hormones receive much less attention as a potential mediator of behavioral variation. This Commentary revisits mechanisms by which the reproductive hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis can be modulated specifically at the gonadal level. These mechanisms include those that may allow the gonad to be regulated independently of the HPG axis, such as receptors for non-HPG hormones, neural inputs and local production of conventional 'neuropeptides'. Here, I highlight studies that examine variation in these gonadal mechanisms in diverse taxa, with an emphasis on recent transcriptomic work. I then outline how future work can establish functional roles of gonadal mechanisms in reproductive behavior and evaluate gonad responsiveness to environmental cues. Recruitment success depends on external forcing mechanisms such as ocean currents that affect the transport of eggs and larvae to favorable habitats. In this study, we investigated the role of larval transport in the recruitment of Mullus barbatus in the Central Mediterranean Sea by modeling the recruits' abundance as a function of both spawning stock size and dispersal rates of the species' early life stages. Our analysis involved twenty years of data on recruits and spawners abundance obtained from scientific trawl surveys, and data on larval dispersal rates derived from a combination of actualized published sources and original data. By calculating the estimates of retention, import and uniformity of the contribution of the spawning areas distributed among different Geographical Sub Areas (GSAs) in the Sicilian nurseries, we assessed their contribution to recruitment using modified Ricker stock size-recruits models. In particular, our results show that a high uniform contribution from spawning areas within GSA16, mainly related to the oceanographic patterns promoting larval retention, together with spawners abundance, significantly reduced the variability of red mullet recruitment. We further highlighted that when switching from a higher to a lower level of evenness of contribution to the recruit population from different spawning areas in the GSA16, the expected spawning stock abundance per recruit for a given fishing pattern can suffer a rapid short-term decline, which is likely to have negative consequences for stock assessment and management decisions. Our results suggest that larval transport plays a crucial role in explaining the interannual variability of recruitment, thereby contributing to a better understanding of stock size variation. Fish egg quality is very crucial in aquaculture sector for production of healthy seed. Egg yolk is an energy reservoir for growth and development of embryo. This study evaluated the biochemical composition and quality of Cirrhinus mrigala eggs at three different hatchery sites of Pakistan, (Site 1= Fish Seed Hatchery, District Pakpattan; Site 2= Sidhuwan Hatchery, Head Balloki, District Kasur; Site 3= Chenab Fish Hatchery, Rangpur, District Muzaffargarh) during induced breeding. For this, a total of 36 (18 males and 18 females) fish brooders, 12 (06 males and 06 females) from each site were utilized. Fatty acids analysis revealed significant differences among three different sites. Saturated fatty acids i.e., palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acids (C18:0) were higher at site 2 compared to the others sites. Monounsaturated fatty acids i.e., Oleic acid (C18:1) and polyunsaturated fatty acids i.e., Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (C22:6) exhibited considerably greater values at site 2 than those of other two sites. Egg mineral contents unveiled remarkable differences, particularly at site 2 indicating significantly higher mineral contents except copper (Cu) in comparison to the other sites. Significant variation exists in fertilization and hatching rates during induced spawning, with the highest values recorded at site 2. The 'thrifty female hypothesis' states that females preserve more of their energy reserves during winter than males because of the sex-specific time frame of energy allocation for reproduction. As males reactivate their reproductive axis before the mating period, while females mainly allocate energy during gestation and lactation, we hypothesized that males would have to use shorter torpor bouts and longer periods of normothermic activity to promote spermatogenesis during winter, a period of low food availability. Here, we applied an acute 2 week 80% caloric restriction in male and female grey mouse lemurs shortly before the mating period. We found evidence of thriftier phenotypes in wintering females, which performed deeper and longer torpor bouts than males and ultimately lost less body mass. CAPA peptides play diverse roles in insects, modulating muscle contraction, regulating fluid balance, and reproduction. In Rhodnius prolixus, a hematophagous insect and a vector for human Chagas disease, three CAPA peptides are encoded by the capability gene, including RhoprCAPA-1, RhoprCAPA-2, and RhoprCAPA-PK-1. RhoprCAPA-2 is an anti-diuretic hormone in R. prolixus. Here, we explore the involvement of RhoprCAPA-2 in reproduction in adult female R. prolixus. Double-label immunohistochemistry reveals co-localization of RhoprCAPA-2-like and the glycoprotein hormone (GPA2/GPB5) subunit GPB5-like immunoreactivity in neurosecretory cells in the mesothoracic ganglionic mass and in their neurohemal sites, suggesting these peptides can be co-released to regulate physiological processes. qPCR analysis reveals changes in transcript expression levels of the RhoprCAPA receptor (CAPAR) in the fat body and reproductive tissues after feeding in adult female R. prolixus. RNA interference-mediated knockdown of CAPAR transcript decreases egg production and reduces hatching rate and survival rate in female R. prolixus. Downregulation of CAPAR decreases vitellogenin RhoprVg1 transcript expression in the fat body and deceases its receptor RhoprVgR transcript level in the ovaries; accompanied by a reduction in vitellogenin content in the fat body and hemolymph. Incubation of fat body and ovaries in vitro with RhoprCAPA-2 increases RhoprVg1 transcript expression in the fat body, vitellogenin content in the fat body culture medium, and increases RhoprVgR transcript in the ovaries. The production performance of laying hens is influenced by various environmental factors within the henhouse. The intricate interactions among these factors make the impact process highly complicated. The exact relationships between production performance and environmental variables are still not well understood. In this study, we measured the production performance of laying hens and various environmental variables across different parts of the henhouse, evaluated the weight of each environmental variable, and constructed a laying rate prediction model. Results displayed that body weight, laying rate, egg weight and eggshell thickness of hens decrease gradually from WCA to FA (P < 0.05). Serum levels of FSH and LH, as well as antibody level of H5 Re-13, gradually decrease from WCA to FA (P < 0.05). Moreover, the values for temperature (T), temperature-humidity index (THI), air velocity (AV), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) gradually increase from WCA to FA (P < 0.05). Conversely, the relative humidity (RH) value gradually decreases from FA to WCA (P < 0.05). Additionally, the weights of the environmental variables, determined using a combination of the grey relational analysis (GRA) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP), were as follows in descending order: RH, THI, T, light intensity (LI), AV, PM 2.5 , NH 3 , and CO 2 . When the number of decision trees in the laying rate prediction model was set to 2,500, the results displayed a high level of agreement between the model's predictions and the observed outcomes. The model's performance evaluation yielded an R 2 value of 0.89995 for the test set, suggesting strong predictive effects. In conclusion, the current study revealed significant differences in both the production performance of laying hens and the environmental variables across different parts of the henhouse. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that different environmental factors have distinct impacts on laying rate, with humidity and temperature identified as the primary factors. Climate warming is causing shifts in reproductive phenology, a crucial life history trait determining offspring survival and population productivity. Evaluating these impacts on exploited marine resources is essential for implementing adaptive measures from an ecosystemic approach. This study introduces a statistical model designed to predict fish spawning phenology from sea surface temperature profiles, integrating mortality-corrected hatch-date distributions inferred from fishery-dependent samplings, along with the gonadosomatic index of adult individuals. When applied to different dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) populations across a broad latitudinal range, the model reasonably predicts the spawning phenology across its extensive thermal ranges, elucidating a direct relationship between mean annual temperature and the breadth of the spawning season. Despite the varying thermal profiles, results show a consistent timing of spawning peaks approximately 49 days before the peak in temperature. Importantly, these findings account for the impact of fishery constraints, such as seasonal closures or different sampling schedules, offering a robust tool for adjusting management practices in response to inter-annual temperature variations. These insights are critical for both short-term fishery management, including the strategic planning of seasonal closures, and long-term projections of spawning phenology shifts under changing thermal regimes. Mitochondria play a key role in aging. Here, we measured integrated mitochondrial functions in experimentally evolved lines of the seed beetle Acanthoscelides obtectus that were selected for early (E) or late (L) reproduction for nearly 4 decades. The 2 lines have markedly different lifespans (8 days and 13 days in the E and L lines, respectively). The contribution of the NADH pathway to maximal flux was lower in the L compared to the E beetles at young stages, associated with increased control by complex I. In contrast, the contribution of the Succinate pathway was higher in the L than in the E line, whereas the Proline pathway showed no differences between the lines. There is a chronic inflammation in PCOS patients, which is correlated with the pathogenesis of PCOS. IL-18 and IL-18BP are related with some inflammatory diseases, while less explored in PCOS. Whether IL-18BP could be a potential drug of PCOS remains unknown.IL-18 and testosterone levels were evaluated in serum of 10 non-PCOS control patients and 20 PCOS patients. Female C57/BL6 mice were gavaged with letrozole to induce PCOS mouse model and IL-18 level was evaluated in the serum of PCOS mouse model, and IL-18 is intraperitoneally injected in female mice, IL-18BP is intraperitoneally injected in the PCOS mice models. Then the body weights, estrous cycles, reproductive hormones and morphology of ovaries were analyzed. The level of ovarian chronic inflammation, fibrosis and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress are evaluated.IL-18 levels are increased in the serum of PCOS patients and PCOS mice models respectively. The serum DHEAS, iWAT weight and adipocyte size were increased in IL-18 group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In the PCOS mouse model treated with IL-18BP, the body weight and serum LH/FSH ratio was decreased compared to the PCOS group (P < 0.05). Understanding the maintenance and shift in reproductive strategies is a fundamental question in evolutionary research. Although many efforts have been made to compare different reproductive strategies, the association between reproductive strategies and lineage divergence is largely unknown. To explore the impact of different reproductive strategies on lineage divergence, we investigated the evolution of clonality in Saxifraga sect. Irregulares+Heterisia. By integrating several lines of evidence, we found that the loss of clonality in Irregulares+Heterisia was associated with a progressive increase in diversification rate and intraspecific morphological diversity but with a reduction in species distribution range. Objective: Although menopause is considered a risk factor for multimorbidity, few studies have explored the association between reproductive lifespan and multimorbidity. This study aimed to explore the association between reproductive lifespan and multimorbidity in postmenopausal Chinese women., Methods: This cross-sectional study selected postmenopausal women as study participants. The reproductive lifespan refers to the interval between menarche and menopause. Multimorbidity refers to having two or more self-reported chronic diseases. We used a logistic regression model to explore potential associations based on the adjustment of a set of covariates., Results: In total, 1,310 postmenopausal women with an average reproductive lifespan of 34 years were included in this study. The prevalence of multimorbidity was 22.2% (291/1,310) in postmenopausal women. Our findings showed that compared with postmenopausal women with the Q1 of reproductive lifespan (≤32 reproductive years), those with Q3 (35-37 reproductive years) and Q4 (≥38 reproductive years) were less likely to have multimorbidity (OR Q3 = 0.529, 95% CI Q3 = 0.347-0.805, OR Q4 = 0.510, 95% CI Q4 = 0.308-0.842), whereas those with Q2 (33-34 reproductive years) were not (OR = 0.700, 95% CI = 0.446-1.098). This study also revealed a linear trend in the association between the reproductive lifespan and multimorbidity; that is, the longer the reproductive lifespan, the lower the risk of multimorbidity., Conclusions: In postmenopausal Chinese women, a longer reproductive lifespan was associated with a lower prevalence of multimorbidity. Exposure to heat stress can cause a significant increase in the death rate and disease susceptibility of poultry birds, ultimately impacting the profitability of the poultry industry. Despite being a more economical choice, Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) are not immune to the harmful effects of heat stress. Quails may experience negative effects on their reproductive performance due to excessive reactive molecules caused by heat stress. However, they have developed various mechanisms to maintain their reproductive abilities in such conditions. The neuroendocrine system in birds plays a vital role in regulating their reproductive responses to thermal stress, and it is also connected to other environmental factors such as photoperiod that can impact their reproductive performance. Eels migrate along largely unknown routes to their spawning ground. By coupling Zermelo's navigation solution and data from the Japan Coastal Ocean Predictability Experiment 2 (JCOPE2M), we simulated a range of seasonal scenarios, swimming speeds, and swimming depths to predict paths that minimize migration duration and energy cost. Our simulations predict a trade-off between migration duration and energy cost. Given that eels do not refuel during their migration, our simulations suggest eels should travel at speeds of 0.4-0.6 body-length per second to retain enough energy reserves for reproduction. For real eels without full information of the ocean currents, they cannot optimize their migration in strong surface currents, thus when swimming at slow swimming speeds, they should swim at depths of 200 m or greater. Eels swimming near the surface are also influenced by seasonal factors, however, migrating at greater depths mitigates these effects. While greater depths present more favorable flow conditions, water temperature may become increasingly unfavorable, dropping near or below 5 °C. The mechanisms contributing to age-related deterioration of the female reproductive system are complex, however aberrant protein homeostasis is a major contributor. We elucidated exceptionally stable proteins, structures, and macromolecules that persist in mammalian ovaries and gametes across the reproductive lifespan. Ovaries exhibit localized structural and cell-type-specific enrichment of stable macromolecules in both the follicular and extrafollicular environments. Moreover, ovaries and oocytes both harbor a panel of exceptionally long-lived proteins, including cytoskeletal, mitochondrial, and oocyte-derived proteins. Climate change co-occurs with an advancement of avian breeding season (indexed as laying dates or fledging dates) in the temperate zone, suggesting a causality between them. Here, we investigate whether the long-term shifts in nestling (chick) ringing dates also mirror this phenomenon. This index is biased by inherent shortcomings, such as the non-independence of dates (in nestmates, colony members), poor accuracy (long period suitable for ringing), and strange shape of distributions. These shortcomings can be reduced by applying the median of annual ringing dates as an index of breeding phenology. The advantage of this index is that data are available for long periods and large sample sizes. By accepting certain compromise between statistical discipline and fieldwork realities, we examined changes in the breeding phenology of 9 bird species from 1951 to 2020 in Hungary. We found that the annual median of ringing dates advanced significantly (by 9-14 days) in the Black-headed Gull, Common Kestrel, Barn Swallow, Great Tit, and Eurasian Blue Tit. Contrarily, no significant (all P > 0.16) changes occurred in the case of the Common Tern, Black-crowned Night-heron, Common Buzzard, and Long-eared Owl. Background and Aims: Not all plant-pollinator interactions are mutualistic, and in fact deceptive pollination systems are widespread in nature. The genus Arisaema has a pollination system known as lethal deceptive pollination, in which plants not only attract pollinating insects without providing any rewards, but also trap them until they die. Many Arisaema species are endangered from various disturbances, including reduction in forest habitat, modification of the forest understorey owing to increasing deer abundance, and plant theft for horticultural cultivation. We aimed to theoretically investigate how lethal deceptive pollination can be maintained from a demographic perspective and how plant and pollinator populations respond to different types of disturbance., Methods: We developed and analysed a mathematical model to describe the population dynamics of a deceptive plant species and its victim pollinator. Calibrating the model based on empirical data, we assessed the conditions under which plants and pollinators could coexist, while manipulating relevant key parameters., Key Results: The model exhibited qualitatively distinct behaviours depending on certain parameters. The plant becomes extinct when it has a low capability for vegetative reproduction and slow transition from male to female, and plant-insect co-extinction occurs especially when the plant is highly attractive to male insects. Increasing deer abundance has both positive and negative effects because of removal of other competitive plants and diminishing pollinators, respectively. Theft for horticultural cultivation can readily threaten plants whether male or female plants are frequently collected. The impact of forest habitat reduction may be limited compared with that of other disturbance types., Conclusions: Our results have emphasized that the demographic vulnerability of lethal deceptive pollination systems would differ qualitatively from that of general mutualistic pollination systems. Finding interventions to break the trade-off between reproduction and lifespan can provide insight into physiological limitations of animals. Effects of dietary protein quality on the trade-off are currently unclear, but clarity could lead to better designed diets that match animal needs. Dietary amino acid blends matching yolk proteins support reproduction and extend lifespan in fruit flies. To test if this is conserved across species, we matched dietary amino acids to vitellogenin to test reproduction and lifespan in adult females of the lubber grasshopper. Specifically, we compared varying degrees of protein quality by manipulating dietary essential amino acids. We identified a high-quality protein diet (amino acids matched to vitellogenin, or reproductive needs) that increased reproduction and matched lifespan in comparison to diets that differed only in the ratios of essential amino acids (i.e., were isocaloric and isonitrogenous). All these diets had longer lifespan but lower reproductive output than fully fed controls. In a separate experiment, full reproduction was possible on the high-quality artificial diet when offered at a 78% higher protein quantity and with a larger lettuce supplement (~ 17% of ad libitum). Additionally, we observed that as dietary protein quality was decreased (i.e., diets were less matched to vitellogenin), reproduction was reduced, and lifespan was extended in the more extreme scenarios. The novel adipokine asprosin, produced by the furin enzymatic cleavage of profibrillin 1 protein (encoded by the Fbn1 gene), is implicated in regulating many physiological functions, including reproduction in mammals. In males, asprosin is reported to increase sperm density, sperm motility, and steroid production by interacting with Olfr734, which belongs to the G-protein-coupled receptor family (GPCR). In 2023, our group predicted and characterized asprosin in silico for the first time and demonstrated the robust expression of fbn1, and furin in the gonads of teleost spotted snakehead (ss) Channa punctata. Taking it forward, in the current study, we have investigated the effect of asprosin on the testicular functions of the spotted snakehead. As C. punctata is a seasonal breeder, the reproductive-phase-dependent expression of fbn1 in the testis was analyzed, showing significant upregulation during the preparatory and post-spawning phases. Additionally, bacterially overexpressed recombinant asprosin of C. punctata was purified to study the effect of ss asprosin on gametogenesis and steroidogenesis. Ex vivo treatment with recombinant asprosin resulted in significant upregulation of spermatogenic marker genes pcna, aldh1a2, cyp26a1, and sycp3. Asprosin also enhanced the gene expression of gonadotropin receptors, as well as sex steroid receptors, in addition to steroidogenic genes star and cyp17a1. Further exploring the downstream signaling cascade, the second messenger of GPCRs, cAMP levels following asprosin treatment were analyzed. Asprosin treatment prominently enhanced cAMP levels, thereby indicating the involvement of GPCR in the transduction of asprosin action. Hence, the study elucidates the regulation of male reproductive function by asprosin in spotted snakeheads.

Studies on animal energetics often focus on standardized metabolic rates to facilitate comparison across systems. Yet these standardized measurements often do not capture the realistic demographic and environmental variation that is common in natural settings. Rather, individuals included in these studies are often non-reproducing, uninjured, resting adults that have not recently eaten-far from a representative sample. We measured the respiratory rates of the sand fiddler crab Leptuca pugilator in air immediately after capture in the field, and compared rates between males, females of different reproductive states, and juveniles. As expected, we show that metabolic rates were influenced by body mass and activity level. We also show that being vitellogenic or gravid had only minor impacts on metabolic costs of females. Importantly, we demonstrate how considering demographics allows for the detection of phenomena that would otherwise go unnoticed. We found that field metabolic rates of L. pugilator in air are as much as an order of magnitude higher than previous standard metabolic rates measured on post-prandial, quiescent individuals. These higher rates may reflect a combination of high activity and active digestion, as fiddler crabs actively feed during low tide periods. Many species exhibit alternative mating tactics (ARTs), with larger socially dominant males competing for females and smaller males adopting "sneaker" strategies to exploit fertilisation opportunities without competition or courtship. Females typically prefer larger socially dominant males, but their ability to manipulate mating or fertilisation outcomes is largely unknown. Here, using chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, we examined whether the female's ovarian fluid (OF) differentially influences the temporal patterns of sperm swimming traits in ejaculates from non-preferred sneaker ('parr') and preferred (dominant) males. Results demonstrate that OF improves sperm swimming speed and linearity compared to river water, regardless of male mating tactic. We report a novel tactic-specific difference in sperm linearity in which parr male sperm initially maintain straighter trajectories in river water, compared to dominant males, but then rapidly change to less linear and more circular paths over time. Intriguingly, we show that OF counteracts this change in sperm linearity in parr males so that patterns become indistinguishable from dominants when parr sperm swim in OF. Sexual conflict arises from differences in reproductive interests between the sexes. We allowed the female harvestman Phalangium opilio to sequentially mate with two different males to examine female sexual receptivity in this species. Virgin females were more sexually receptive than non-virgins. Males exhibited a high interest in repeated copulations with the same female, often engaging in aggressive behaviours such as biting and reversed sexual cannibalism. Fellatio, a behaviour in which females lick the male's penis, was observed in 44% of trials and was associated with female unwillingness to mate and shorter copulation duration. Fellatio was repeatable, suggesting that it is influenced by individual characteristics or underlying physiological factors. Female lifespan was negatively correlated with the total number of eggs produced, suggesting a trade-off between reproduction and longevity. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), an invasive and polyphagous pest affecting various vital crops globally, was studied to assess how different maize hybrids impact its biological parameters under controlled laboratory conditions. Maize, a crucial crop for food security in Egypt, requires effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to manage pests like S. frugiperda. This article explores how S. frugiperda performs on five maize hybrids-Hi-Tech 2031, Wataniya 6, Giza 10, Giza 128, and Giza 168. Significant differences were observed in larval duration across the hybrids, with the shortest duration (14.08 days) on Hi-Tech 2031. Giza 128 resulted in the longest pupal period (9.39 days), and adult lifespans varied between 8.91 and 9.61 days. Reproductive parameters also diverse, with pre-oviposition periods ranging from 4.64 to 4.90 days and oviposition periods from 3 to 4.14 days. The highest average egg count (1352.19 eggs) was recorded with Giza 10. Hybrids Hi-Tech 2031 and Giza 128 had a lower male proportion (44.81% and 43.45%, respectively). This study shows the possibility that male extraorbital lacrimal gland-derived pheromones are involved in reproductive efficiency in rats., Abstract: In rodents, male-derived pheromones play fundamental roles in reproduction. The Hirosaki hairless rat (HHR) is a mutant strain derived from the Sprague-Dawley rat (SDR). While investigating the natural mating between single males and females, (SDR♂ × SDR♀) or (HHR♂ × HHR♀), the HHRs showed higher fecundity than the SDRs; the mean period between mating and delivery was shorter, and every HHR pair gave birth, whereas approximately half of the SDR pairs gave birth in the 3 months of experimental testing. By changing partners between the HHRs and SDRs, (SDR♂ × HHR♀) or (HHR♂ × SDR♀), we attributed the fecundity difference to the males. However, no significant difference was observed in the litter size, the concentration, morphology, or motility of sperm in the cauda epididymis, or the testosterone concentration in the serum between the SDR and HHR males. When an SDR and HHR male were simultaneously mated with a single female, the HHR males always succeeded in leaving progeny. Therefore, we assumed that the reason for the fecundity difference was the difference in copulation efficiency and focused on male-derived pheromones that may induce reproductive behaviors in females. Whereas Darcin (MUP20), one of the pheromones produced in the liver, did not appear to be involved, the extraorbital lacrimal gland (ELG) was heavier in the HHR males and showed larger amounts of pheromones, namely exocrine gland-secreting peptide 1 (ESP1) and cystatin-related protein 1 (CRP1). These results suggest that the fecundity difference is due to the difference in amounts of ELG-derived pheromones.

Life history traits determine the organismal abundance within a population and are affected by the presence of trade-offs that modify relationships between traits. These relationships can vary across different environments either by local adaptation or phenotypic plasticity. Reproductive traits have direct fitness implications and therefore are suitable to study among population variation linked to environmental differences. Factors such as altitude are often related to differences in key physical factors like ambient temperature or the subsequent duration of the suitable period for annual activity. The aim of this work was to compare reproductive investment in females of the field cricket Gryllus campestris originated from different altitudes, but without identifying the components (genetic vs. phenotypic) of the analysed variables. This species has an annual cycle; after a winter diapause, adults emerge to breed by early mid spring to produce a new generation of nymphs. The study used females collected at the start of the 2021 breeding season, from 10 populations living in the Cantabrian region (Northern Spain). Five of them were located in areas under 170m a.s.l. and the other five above 1100m. Females were allowed to mate with a male from the same population and to lay eggs that we then collected to estimate egg mass and laying rate; both traits were analysed controlling for female size. We found no effect of altitude on any of the three measured traits, female size, egg mass, and laying rate, as well as on the relationships between each pair or traits. Neural communication requires both fast-acting neurotransmitters and neuromodulators that function on slower timescales to communicate. Endogenous bioactive peptides, often called "neuropeptides," comprise the largest and most diverse class of neuromodulators that mediate crosstalk between the brain and peripheral tissues to regulate physiology and behaviors conserved across the animal kingdom. Neuropeptide signaling can be terminated through receptor binding and internalization or degradation by extracellular enzymes called neuropeptidases. Inactivation by neuropeptidases can shape the dynamics of signaling in vivo by specifying both the duration of signaling and the anatomic path neuropeptides can travel before they are degraded. For most neuropeptides, the identity of the relevant inactivating peptidase(s) is unknown. Here, we established a screening platform in C. elegans utilizing mass spectrometry-based peptidomics to discover neuropeptidases and simultaneously profile the in vivo specificity of these enzymes against each of more than 250 endogenous peptides. We identified NEP-2, a worm ortholog of the mammalian peptidase neprilysin-2, and demonstrated that it regulates specific neuropeptides, including those in the egg-laying circuit. We found that NEP-2 is required in muscle cells to regulate signals from neurons to modulate both behavior and health in the reproductive system. Changes in the migration phenology of birds linked to global change are extensively documented. Longitudinal studies from temperate breeding grounds have mostly shown earlier arrivals in the spring and a variety of patterns during fall migration, 1 , 2 yet no studies have addressed whether and how migration phenology has changed using data from the tropical non-breeding grounds. Understanding whether changes in migratory phenology are also evident in non-breeding sites is essential to determining the underlying causes of patterns documented in breeding areas. Using data from historical scientific collections and modern repositories of community science records, we assessed changes in the migration phenology of 12 Nearctic-Neotropical long-distance migratory birds in Colombia over six decades. We also explored whether shared breeding and non-breeding climatic niches explained variation in the phenological patterns observed among species. All species showed shifts in spring (range -37 to 9 days from peak passage date) or fall (range -26 to 36 days) migration, but patterns differed among species in ways partly attributable to shared breeding or wintering climatic niches. Our results, although not yet broadly generalizable, suggest that birds use cues to time their migration at their non-breeding grounds, which are most likely different to those they use on their breeding grounds. A successful control of sexual maturation is crucial for year-round production of lumpfish juveniles destined as cleaner fish in Atlantic salmon aquaculture. This study investigated the combined effects of photoperiod and temperature manipulations on sexual maturation and spawning in lumpfish females. Lumpfish juveniles were exposed to simulated natural and nine-month compressed annual photoperiods, with subsequent temperature elevation. Body weight (BW), condition factor (K), gonadosomatic index (GSI), ovarian development, plasma levels of 17β-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), and spawning were assessed. Compressing the natural photoperiod caused a clear increase and decrease in GSI, T, 11-KT and E2 towards and during the spawning period. Before the temperature elevation, GSI, T, 11-KT, E2 and ovarian development were advanced in the compressed photoperiod. After the temperature elevation, GSI, T, 11-KT and E2 fluctuated more in the compressed photoperiod, while in the natural photoperiod, E2 declined, and GSI, T and 11-KT increased. Spawning was advanced by 1 month in the compressed photoperiod compared to the natural photoperiod. Temperature elevation led to higher levels, earlier peaks and declines of T, 11-KT or E2 in both photoperiods, and advanced spawning by 1.5 months in the compressed photoperiod compared to the natural photoperiod. Temperature elevation also led to increased ovulation recruitment and increased cumulative weight of spawned eggs in the natural photoperiod. Compressing the natural photoperiod and elevating temperature can thus advance sexual maturation and spawning in lumpfish females. The disposable soma theory (DST) posits that organisms age and die because of a direct trade-off in resource allocation between reproduction and somatic maintenance. DST predicts that investments in reproduction accentuate somatic damage which increase senescence and shortens lifespan. Here, we directly tested DST predictions in breeding and nonbreeding female C57BL/6J mice. We measured reproductive outputs, body composition, daily energy expenditure, and oxidative stress at peak lactation and over lifetime. We found that reproduction had an immediate and negative effect on survival due to problems encountered during parturition for some females. However, there was no statistically significant residual effect on survival once breeding had ceased, indicating no trade-off with somatic maintenance. Instead, higher mortality appeared to be a direct consequence of reproduction without long-term physiological consequences. Reproduction did not elevate oxidative stress. Level of dam milk production (DMP) and dam milk fat to protein ratio (DFPR), as an indicator of metabolic status in dairy cows, have been identified to be associated with productive and reproductive performance of the offspring. Yet whether the interaction of DMP by DFPR can be associated with performance of the offspring have not been studied to our knowledge. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the association of the main and interactive effects of DMP and DFPR with offspring's birth weight, survival, milk yield and fertility. To this end, data of birth weight, culling rate, milk yield and reproductive variables of offspring born to lactating dams (n = 14,582) and data associated with DMP and DFPR during 305-day lactation were retrieved. Afterwards, offspring were classified in three categories of DMP, including DMP1 (dams with <10.00 × 10 3  kg of 305-day milk production), DMP2 (dams with ≥10.00 × 10 3  kg and <14.00 × 10 3  kg of 305-day milk production), DMP3 (dams with ≥14.00 × 10 3  kg of 305-day milk production), and three categories of DFPR, including DFPR1 (offspring born to dams with <1.00 FPR), DFPR2 (offspring born to dams with ≥1.00 and < 1.40 FPR) and DFPR3 (offspring born to dams with ≥1.40 FPR). Statistical analysis revealed no association of the interaction effect of DMP by DFPR with investigated variables in the offspring (P > 0.05). However, the main effect of DMP was positively associated with milk yield, but negatively associated with survival, age at first insemination and conception during nulliparity, and transgenerational improvement in milk yield in the offspring (P < 0.05). Moreover, the main effect of DFPR was positively associated with birth weight, survival and first service conception rate during nulliparity, but negatively associated with metabolic status and reproductive performance during primiparity in the offspring (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the present study did not find any interaction effect of DMP by DFPR on productive and reproductive variables in the offspring. This finding implicates the association of DMP with milk production in the offspring was regardless of DFPR. Cyclical population dynamics are a common phenomenon in populations worldwide, yet the spatial organization of these cycles remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the spatial form and timing of a population collapse from 2018 to 2022 in Canada lynx ( Lynx canadensis ) across the northwest boreal forest. We analyzed survival, reproduction, and dispersal data from 143 individual global positioning system (GPS) collared lynx from populations across five study sites spanning interior Alaska to determine whether lynx displayed characteristics of a population wave following a concurrent wave in snowshoe hare ( Lepus americanus ) abundance. Reproductive rates declined across the study sites; however, site-level reproduction declined first in our easternmost study sites, supporting the idea of a population wave. Despite a clear increase in percent of dispersing lynx, there was no evidence of directional bias in dispersal following a hare population wave. Analysis did show increasingly poor survival for lynx dispersing to the east compared to combined resident and westward dispersal. This pattern is consistent with a survival-mediated population wave in lynx as the driver of the theorized population wave. The combination of these factors supports the idea of a hierarchical response to snowshoe hare population declines with a drop in lynx reproduction followed by increased dispersal, and finally reduced survival. To understand the mechanisms underlying social evolution and caste development in social insects, caste-specific organs and genes should be investigated. In the rhinotermitid termite, Reticulitermes speratus, the lipocalin gene RS008881, which encodes a protein transporter, is expressed in the ovarian accessory glands of primary queens. To obtain additional data on its expression and product localization, we conducted real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and protein assays using a peptide antibody. Gene expression analysis of the castes revealed that RS008881 was highly expressed in female primary and secondary reproductives. Further analysis of its expression during reproductive caste differentiation showed that its expression levels increased prior to molting into reproductive individuals, even during the winged imago (alates) stage. Western blotting and fluorescent immunohistochemical staining revealed that the RS008881 product was localized in the ovary as well as the eggshells produced by female reproductives. Labor division is a phenomenon observed across various biological contexts, including examples such as the differentiation between germ/somatic cells in multicellular organisms and the division between reproductive/worker individuals within social animal groups. In such cases, certain members contribute to tasks that enhance the viability of the entire group, even if this requires a reduction in their individual reproductive efforts. Given that group members have the potential to adopt varying contribution levels, a comprehensive analysis of the evolution becomes intricate due to the problem's high dimensionality. In this paper, I introduce a novel method for analyzing the evolution of the distribution of contribution levels to group viability, with a particular formulation centered on the success of clonal strains. The analysis demonstrates that the curvature of the fecundity function in relation to contributions to the group plays a pivotal role in determining the occurrence of labor division between reproductive and non-reproductive tasks, aligning in part with results from prior research. Furthermore, I extend this analysis to encompass contributions to multiple categories of tasks for group viability. My findings indicate that investments in non-reproductive tasks are selected based on the average contributions for each task, with individual variation playing a less significant role as long as average values remain consistent. Additionally, I explore the impact of group size and relatedness within the group on labor division.
