Micarea (Ascomycota, Pilocarpaceae) is a large cosmopolitan genus of crustose lichens. We investigated molecular systematics and taxonomy of the poorly known Micarea melaeniza group focussing on M. melaeniza, M. nigella and M. osloensis. A total of 54 new sequences were generated and using Bayesian and maximum likelihood analysis of two markers (nuITS and mtSSU), we discovered two previously unrecognized phylogenetic lineages, one of which is described here as Micarea eurasiatica Kantelinen & G. Thor, sp. nov., morphologically characterized by pycnidia that are sessile to emergent, cylindrically shaped, with greenish-black K+ olive green, wall pigmentation and containing large mesoconidia up to 6 µm in length. The species is known from Japan and Finland. In addition, we show that the reproduction biology of M. osloensis has been poorly understood and that the species often occurs as an anamorph with stipitate pycnidia. We present a species synopsis and notes on pigments. Our research supports previous results of asexuality being an important reproductive strategy of species growing on dead wood. Chromosome numbers and reproductive mode for nine species of Tectarioid ferns of Indonesia are reported here to add new cytological accounts for the genus Tectaria (Tectariaceae) of the Malesian region. This study aimed to (1) observe the somatic chromosome number of some species of Tectaria in the Malesian region; and (2) determine the reproduction types of the observed species by counting the spore number per sporangium. The results verified the formerly reported basic chromosome numbers x = 40 for the genus Tectaria. The present study has revealed the presence of 5 species of sexual diploids, one species of sterile triploid, and two species of sexual tetraploids. This study also reported new records of chromosome numbers for Tectariod ferns of the Malesian region from sexual diploid (2n = 80) of T. aurita (Sw.) S.Chandra, T. melanocaulos (Blume) Copel., T. palmata (Mett.) Copel., and T. zollingeri (Kurz.) Holttum, and sterile triploid (2n = 120) T. menyanthidis (C.Presl) Copel. The chromosome numbers of sexual diploid (2n = 80) T. angulata (Willd.) Copel. and tetraploid (2n = 160) T. barberi (Hook.) Copel., sexual tetraploid (2n = 160) T. polymorpha (Wall. ex Hook.) Copel., sexual diploid (2n = 80) and sexual tetraploid (2n = 160) T. semipinnata (Roxb.) C.V.Morton are reported for the first time collected from Central Kalimantan, Java and Sumatra, respectively. Astrangia Milne Edwards & Haime, 1848 is a small, poorly known genus of Scleractinia, composed of 15 extant species with circumtropical to temperate distributions. Only two species of this genus have been distinguished in shallow-water environments along the Brazilian coast: A. solitaria (Le Sueur, 1817) and A. rathbuni Vaughan, 1906. Here, we describe a new, blue Astrangia species from the northeastern Brazilian coast. Scanning electron microscopy images of the corallites supported the taxonomic analysis and the description of the new species. Early confused with Astrangia woodsi Wells, 1955, an incrusting coral with blue-gray polyps, the new species is a zooxanthellate, solitary brooding coral and can easily be recognized in biofouling communities because of its solitary shape instead of the colonial development of A. woodsi. The new species was observed on artificial substrates, co-occurring with non-native invertebrates, such as the bryozoan Triphyllozoon arcuatum (MacGillivray, 1889), and “sun corals” of the genus Tubastraea Lesson 1830). This is the second Astrangia species reported from Brazil, updating the inventory for the entire South Atlantic to five recorded species. Its reproduction mode as a brooder was determined through histological examination, showing embryos in the mesenteries. Although P. longicornis has been found worldwide for more than a century, the genetic structure, origin, and invasion history of this species have not yet been extensively studied, partially because of the limited number of genetic markers currently available. In the present study, we developed 36 polymorphic microsatellite markers for P. longicornis and characterized these markers by genotyping P. longicornis workers from 74 colonies in East and Southeast Asia. All loci were polymorphic, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from 3 to 18 (8.5 on average). Extremely high levels of heterozygosity were found in all populations, suggesting that workers are invariably produced from the mating of divergent queen and male lineages. Queens and males possess non-overlapping allele size ranges at 18 loci, indicating the potential resolving power of the subset of markers in inferring the history of queen and male lineages. Genetic differentiation among three studied populations was low yet significant and may likely reflect their close association with human activities. Overall, the new microsatellite markers developed in the present study serve as a practical tool to reconstruct routes of invasion and assess the population genetics of this invasive ant.

Aim: The historical biogeography of the Antarctic terrestrial flora remains poorly studied and understood. Long‐term in situ persistence of mosses was demonstrated but region‐wide phylogeographical patterns and processes which shaped extant ranges remain largely unknown. Based on a circum‐Antarctic phylogeography, we aim to explore the location of glacial refugia, especially the possibility of their existence in the continent, patterns of possible connections between extant discrete populations, local colonisation routes and barriers to gene flow, hence relative importance of connectivity and isolation. Location: Antarctica, South America, Australia and New Zealand. Taxon: Syntrichia sarconeurum Ochyra & R.H.Zander (Pottiaceae). Methods: We used a range‐wide, taxonomically informed sampling and multilocus sequencing of nuclear and chloroplast DNA regions. The temporal evolutionary framework, spatial genetic structure and regional diversification were assessed using phylogenetic reconstruction (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference), molecular dating, phylogeographical analyses and reconstruction of ancestral areas. Results: We found a striking genetic structure of the Antarctic Syntrichia sarconeurum populations that deviates from previous reports on mosses. The presence of two allopatric cpDNA haplotypes indicated a long‐term isolation of the continental populations. Nuclear ITS revealed three major lineages with a main genetic break largely consistent with plastid data. Significant phylogeographical structure was further supported by NST/FST comparison, raggedness index and mismatch analyses. Diversification of the Antarctic lineages occurred within the Pleistocene, since about 1.36 Ma. Main Conclusions: The genetic break genetic break revealed in the phylogeographical structure coincides with the Gressit line, a biogeographical separation area between the biota of the Antarctic Peninsula and the main continental Antarctica. It indicates limited connectivity of populations and suggests that S. sarconeurum has survived in multiple refugia both in the peripheral areas of the Antarctic and within the continent over several glacial periods. Abstract Background There has always been controversy over whether clonal plants have lower genetic diversity than plants that reproduce sexually. These conflicts could be attributed to the fact that few studies have taken into account the mating system of sexually reproducing plants and their phylogenetic distance. Moreover, most clonal plants in these previous studies regularly produce sexual progeny. Here, we describe a study examining the levels of genetic diversity and differentiation within and between local populations of fully clonal Zingiber zerumbet at a microgeographical scale and compare the results with data for the closely related selfing Z. corallinum and outcrossing Z. nudicarpum. Such studies could disentangle the phylogenetic and sexually reproducing effect on genetic variation of clonal plants, and thus contribute to an improved understanding in the clonally reproducing effects on genetic diversity and population structure. Results The results revealed that the level of local population genetic diversity of clonal Z. zerumbet was comparable to that of outcrossing Z. nudicarpum and significantly higher than that of selfing Z. corallinum. However, the level of microgeographic genetic diversity of clonal Z. zerumbet is comparable to that of selfing Z. corallinum and even slightly higher than that of outcrossing Z. nudicarpum. The genetic differentiation among local populations of clonal Z. zerumbet was significantly lower than that of selfing Z. corallinum, but higher than that of outcrossing Z. nudicarpum. A stronger spatial genetic structure appeared within local populations of Z. zerumbet compared with selfing Z. corallinum and outcrossing Z. nudicarpum. Conclusions Our study shows that fully clonal plants are able not only to maintain a high level of within-population genetic diversity like outcrossing plants, but can also maintain a high level of microgeographic genetic diversity like selfing plant species, probably due to the accumulation of somatic mutations and absence of a capacity for sexual reproduction. We suggest that conservation strategies for the genetic diversity of clonal and selfing plant species should be focused on the protection of all habitat types, especially fragments within ecosystems, while maintenance of large populations is a key to enhance the genetic diversity of outcrossing species.

Cyclocybe parasitica is a wood-destroying parasitic edible mushroom growing on diverse broad-leafed trees in New Zealand and other Pacific areas. Recent molecular systematics of European Cyclocybe aegerita, a newly delimited Asian phylum and of related species, corroborated the distinction of the chiefly saprobic cultivated edible mushroom C. aegerita from C. parasitica. Here, we show that C. parasitica exhibits a morpho-physiological trait characteristic to its European cousin, i.e., monokaryotic fruiting sensu stricto (basidiome formation without mating). Monokaryotic fruiting structures formed by C. parasitica ICMP 11668-derived monokaryons were categorized into four phenotypes. One of them displays ulcer-like structures previously reported from bracket fungi. Histology of dikaryotic and monokaryotic C. parasitica fruiting structures revealed anatomical commonalities and differences between them, and towards monokaryotic fruiting structures of C. aegerita. Mating experiments with C. parasitica strains representative of each fruiting phenotype identified compatible sibling monokaryons. Given reports on hypothetically monokaryotic basidiome field populations of ‘C. aegerita sensu lato’, it seems worthwhile to prospectively investigate whether monokaryotic fruiting s.str. occurs in nature. Sampling from such populations including karyotyping, comparative -omics, and competition assays may help to answer this question and provide evidence whether this trait may confer competitive advantages to a species capable of it. Abstract Diverse reproduction modes of bio‐organisms open new intriguing opportunities for biochemistry‐enabled materials. Herein, a new strategy is developed to explore biodirected structures for functional materials via controlling the reproduction mode. Yeast with sexual or asexual reproduction mode are employed in this work. They result in two different biodirected structures, from bowl‐like hollow hemisphere to “bubble‐in‐sphere” (BIS) structure, for the VNxOy/C composites. Benefitting from the hierarchical structure, nanoscale particles and conductive biomass–derived carbon base, both VNxOy/C biocomposites achieve high power/energy density, good reliability, and excellent long‐term cycling stability in aqueous Zn‐ion batteries. Deep investigations further reveal that different biodirected structures greatly influence the electrochemical properties of biocomposites. The bowl‐like structures with thin shells and folded double layers achieve larger surface area and more active sites, which ensure their faster kinetics and better high rate capability. The BIS structures with a more compact assembly and higher stack capability are favorable to the better energy storage. Therefore, this work not only introduces a new clue to boost biodirected structures for functional materials, but also propels the development of Zn‐ion batteries in diverse applications.

Paspalum notatum is an important forage native to Southern Brazil and one of the most promising fodder species in terms of productivity, quality, resistance and growth speed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reproductive mode and fertility of hybrid progenies resulting from artificial crosses among artificially duplicated sexual plants, selected intraspecific hybrids of the UFRGS breeding program and apomictic ecotypes of the species. The resulting F1 progenies were represented by 24 plants with high pollen viability (varying from 82.15 to 99.67%) and 1.2:1 segregation for the sexual: apomictic reproduction mode, indicating predominantly sexual hybrids, due to distorted segregation. In the apomictic plants, most chromosomes paired as bivalents in diakinesis. Since the low presence of abnormalities observed in the meiotic chromosome pairing and the high pollen viability of the hybrids, all plants were confirmed as promising parents for future crosses. Pneumocystis , an important opportunistic fungal pathogen that parasitizes in multiple mammalian lungs, may cause life-threatening Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and even death among immunocompromised individuals. With the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing and multi-omics technologies, systematic comparative analyses of genome, transcriptome, and whole-genome sequencing results demonstrate that Pneumocystis is a type of obligate biotrophic fungi, and requires obtaining nutrition from hosts. In addition, sexual reproduction is an essential process for Pneumocystis survival, production and transmission, and asexual reproduction facilitates Pneumocystis survival, which provides new insights into understanding of the whole developmental process of Pneumocystis in the host lung and inter-host transmission of Pneumocystis . This review summarizes the advances in the reproduction mode of Pneumocystis and underlying mechanisms, which provides insights into prevention and treatment of PCP, notably for the prophylaxis against nosocomial transmission of PCP.

The brine shrimp Artemia exhibits two reproductive modes: 1) oviparity, producing diapause embryos; and 2) ovoviviparity, producing free-swimming nauplii. Previous studies have suggested the existence of a critical stage that determines the reproductive mode. Physicochemical factors, such as photoperiod, temperature, and salinity, have been suggested to irreversibly affect the reproductive mode of oocytes during this critical stage. In this study, experiments were carried out using a photoperiod and temperature-sensitive parthenogenetic Artemia clone where maternal Artemia were shifted bidirectionally between ovoviviparity (18 h L:6 h D, 27°C) and oviparity (6 h L:18 h D, 19°C) culture conditions. In the main experiment (Artemia shifted at six different stages including the post-larva II to adult II), the reproductive mode of first brood was converted when shifting was performed on post-larva II and III but was not converted when females were shifted after post-larva III. A supplementary experiment further revealed that the reproductive mode of first brood could be altered when shifting females at an "early phase of post-larva IV", characterized by a developing ovisac reaching the middle of the third abdominal segment, ventral spines, and some oocytes growing larger than the others. In both experiments, reproductive modes of the second brood were significantly affected when the shifting was performed on post-larva IV. These results suggest that the critical stage for inducing oviparity and embryonic diapause is at the previtellogenic stage of oocytes, or at maternal "early phase of post-larva IV" for the first-brood offspring. During this stage, differential gene expression patterns of the two destined oocytes may be triggered by the token stimuli signals received by the oocytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims Vandenboschia speciosa is a highly vulnerable fern species, with a large genome (10.5 Gb). Haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes are perennial, can reproduce vegetatively, and certain populations are composed only of independent gametophytes. These features make this fern a good model: (1) for high-throughput analysis of satellite DNA (satDNA) to investigate possible evolutionary trends in satDNA sequence features; (2) to determine the relative contribution of satDNA and other repetitive DNAs to its large genome; and (3) to analyse whether the reproduction mode or phase alternation between long-lasting haploid and diploid stages influences satDNA abundance or divergence. Methods We analysed the repetitive fraction of the genome of this species in three different populations (one comprised only of independent gametophytes) using Illumina sequencing and bioinformatic analysis with RepeatExplorer and satMiner. Key Results The satellitome of V. speciosa is composed of 11 satDNA families, most of them showing a short repeat length and being A + T rich. Some satDNAs had complex repeats composed of sub-repeats, showing high similarity to shorter satDNAs. Three families had particular structural features and highly conserved motifs. SatDNA only amounts to approx. 0.4 % of its genome. Likewise, microsatellites do not represent more than 2 %, but transposable elements (TEs) represent approx. 50 % of the sporophytic genomes. We found high resemblance in satDNA abundance and divergence between both gametophyte and sporophyte samples from the same population and between populations. Conclusions (1) Longer (and older) satellites in V. speciosa have a higher A + T content and evolve from shorter ones and, in some cases, microsatellites were a source of new satDNAs; (2) the satellitome does not explain the huge genome size in this species while TEs are the major repetitive component of the V. speciosa genome and mostly contribute to its large genome; and (3) reproduction mode or phase alternation between gametophytes and sporophytes does not entail accumulation or divergence of satellites. • Background and Aims Alpine plants grow in harsh environments and are thought to face occasional frost during the sensitive reproductive phase. Apomixis (asexual reproduction via seed) can be advantageous when sexual reproduction is disturbed by cold stress. Apomictic polyploids tend to grow in colder climates than their sexual diploid relatives. Whether cold temperatures actually induce apomixis was unknown to date. • Methods We tested experimentally in climate cabinets for effects of low temperatures and repeated frost on phenology, fitness and mode of reproduction in diploid and tetraploid cytotypes of the alpine species Ranunculus kuepferi. The reproduction mode was determined via flow cytometric seed screening (FCSS). • Key Results Diploids produced the first flowers earlier than the tetraploids in all treatments. Cold treatments significantly reduced the fitness of both cytotypes regarding seed set, and increased the frequency of apomictic seed formation in diploids, but not in tetraploids. Over consecutive years, the degree of facultative apomixis showed individual phenotypic plasticity. • Conclusions Cold stress is correlated to expression of apomixis in warm-adapted, diploid R. kuepferi, while temperature-tolerant tetraploids just maintain facultative apomixis as a possible adaptation to colder climates. The population structure, regeneration ways and spatial relationships of six relict deciduous broadleaved trees were examined based on community investigation on Mount Tianmu, East China. The results showed that relict deciduous broadleaved trees had a strong ability of vegetative reproduction and their population structure was generally belonged to intermittent type. Some relict species such as Cyclocarya paliurus and Liquidamb aracalycina regenerated discontinuously at appropriate sites via long distance diffusion. Some species such as Emmenoptery henryi and Euptelea pleiospermum regenerated discontinuously around mature trees due to habitat limitation and frequent disturbance. After occupying forest gaps by seedling regeneration, C. paliurus, L. acalycina, Nyssasinensis and Liquidambar formosana could recruit and form multi stemmed individuals by their inherent sprouting ability at relatively stable sites such as crest slope and side slope. At riverbed, valley slope and head hollow, recognized as unstable habitats, Emmenopterys henryi, E. pleiospermum, and L. formosana could also recruit by strong sprouting ability due to sparse seedlings and individual loss incurred by disturbance. Therefore, the relict deciduous broadleaved trees could be classified into two ecological species groups (repairment species for forest gap and supplement species for special habitat) based on spatial distribution and strategy of regeneration and competition. Some of the most important functional traits in animals are related to the potentially vast array of feeding strategies and microhabitat use. Correlated evolution of diet and habitat specialization with ecomorphological traits has been described in vertebrates, but such functional trait variation in soil in vertebrates is less well-studied. In this study, we explore the evidence for ecomorphological adaptations in Collembola, an important group of soil invertebrates, and place this in the context of their feeding biology, vertical stratification in soil and reproduction mode. For this purpose, we compiled a database of functional traits, including mouthparts structures (mandibula, maxilla), feeding guilds (microbivores, herbivores and scavengers/carnivores), vertical habitat stratification (epigeic, hemiedaphic, euedaphic) and reproduction mode (bisexual, parthenogenetic). We used phylogenetic reconstructions and Pagel's discrete method to test for correlations between various traits. We found a correlation between diet and mandibulae structure, with scavengers/predators possessing scratching/piercing mandibulae without a molar plate, while chewing mandibulae with a molar plate were associated with herbivores and microbivores. Vertical habitat stratification did not correlate to diet or to reproduction mode. No phylogenetic signal was found in the structure of the maxillae, although maxillae in the scavenger/predatory diet group differed structurally from herbivores and/or microbivores. The correlated evolution seen between scavengers/predators and scratching/piercing mandibulae indicate selective pressures linking different morphological traits related to the biology of Collembola, and shed new light on the broader context of diet evolution in soil arthropods. The study aimed to determine the long-term changes of the Senecio macrophyllus M.BIEB. population traits: the abundance, reproduction mode, individual fecundity, seed rain and recruitment of new genets in the course of xerothermic grassland overgrowing. The study had also the applied goal: to estimate the chances of "special care" species to survive in the changing environment without management regime for the maintenance of grassland. The model object was the island population of large-leaved ragwort on Biała Góra (the White Mountain) near Tomaszów Lubelski, South-East Poland. To achieve these aims I used the following sets of data: phytosociological relev,s made in plant communities in an interval of 16-18 years; repeated elaboration of the numbers and life-stage structure of the population, both by non-surface and surface method; observation of plants, life cycle in 50 labelled genets; population reproduction and seed rain amounts. The area of an open xerothermic grassland decreased due to the process of overgrowing by bushes which was accompanied by the increasing coverage of forest and meadow herbs as well as monocotyledons, mainly Brachypodium pinnatum and Calamagrostis epigejos. The abundance of the S. macrophyllus population noticable diminished. The flowering mode has been changing during years from an oscillation to a chaotic type which caused the significant decreasing of the individual fecundity, population reproduction and seed rain. In last years it was reflected in the interruption of juveniles’ recruitment.

Pollen quality was evaluated in Pilosella plants sourced from the field and representing various cytotypes (diploid to octoploid), reproduction modes (sexuality, facultative apomixis and seed sterility or semisterility) and status of origin (basic species, hybridogenous intermediate species and recent hybrids). Two methods of non-vital pollen staining were compared, providing a similar pattern of variation in pollen stainability and pollen size. A complex influence of ploidy level, reproduction mode and plant origin on pollen quality was found. Sexual biotypes had high and equable pollen stainability whereas apomictic and (semi)sterile plants were more variable in this trait. Nevertheless, the sexual, apomictic and (semi)sterile plants did not significantly differ in pollen stainability, while the impacts of both ploidy level and plant origin were significant. Apomictic triploids had low pollen stainability and heterogeneously sized pollen, most likely resulting from disturbed meiosis. The other biotypes, including higher odd-ploid cytotypes, displayed various patterns of pollen quality partially depending on the hybridogenous origin. Whereas high pollen quality was detected in most of the apomictic hexaploids and heptaploids, including recent hybrids, serious pollen dysfunction was found in most octoploids. Seed (semi)sterility was not strongly associated with reduced pollen quality. Either blocked or unstable pollen production was occasionally recorded, predominantly among recent hybrids. Despite autonomous apomixis independent of pollen, most apomictic biotypes displayed fairly high pollen stainability and pollen size homogeneity, implying sufficient production of viable reduced pollen. Meiosis, the key step of sexual reproduction, persists in facultative apomictic plants functional to some extent. However, it still remains unclear how and why proportions of reproductive pathways vary under different environmental stress conditions. We hypothesized that oxidative stress mediates alterations of developmental pathways. In apomictic plants we expected that megasporogenesis, the stage directly after meiosis, would be more affected than later stages of seed development. To simulate moderate stress conditions we subjected clone-mates of facultative apomictic Ranunculus auricomus to 10 h photoperiods, reflecting natural conditions, and extended ones (16.5 h). Reproduction mode was screened directly after megasporogenesis (microscope) and at seed stage (flow cytometric seed screening). Targeted metabolite profiles were performed with HPLC-DAD to explore if and which metabolic reprogramming was caused by the extended photoperiod. Prolonged photoperiods resulted in increased frequencies of sexual vs. aposporous initials directly after meiosis, but did not affect frequencies of sexual vs. asexual seed formation. Changes in secondary metabolite profiles under extended photoperiods affected all classes of compounds, and c. 20% of these changes separated the two treatments. Unexpectedly, the renowned antioxidant phenylpropanoids and flavonoids added more to clone-mate variation than to treatment differentiation. Among others, chlorophyll degradation products, non-assigned phenolic compounds and more lipophilic metabolites also contributed to the dissimilarity of the metabolic profiles of plants that had been exposed to the two different photoperiods. The hypothesis of moderate light stress effects was supported by increased proportions of sexual megaspore development at the expense of aposporous initial formation. The lack of effects at the seed stage confirms the basic assumption that only meiosis and sporogenesis would be sensitive to light stress. The concomitant change of secondary metabolite profiles, as a systemic response at this early developmental stage, supports the notion that oxidative stress could have affected megasporogenesis by causing the observed metabolic reprogramming. * Background and Aims Allopolyploidy and intraspecific heteroploid crosses are associated, in certain groups, with changes in the mating system. The genus Sorbus represents an appropriate model to study the relationships between ploidy and reproductive mode variations. Diploid S. aria and tetraploid apomictic S. austriaca were screened for ploidy and mating system variations within pure and sympatric populations in order to gain insights into their putative causalities. * Methods Flow cytometry was used to assess genome size and ploidy level among 380 S. aria s.l. and S. austriaca individuals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 303 single-seed flow cytometric seed screenings being performed to identify their mating system. Pollen viability and seed set were also determined. * Key Results Flow cytometry confirmed the presence of di-, tri- and tetraploid cytotype mixtures in mixed-ploidy populations of S. aria and S. austriaca. No ploidy variation was detected in single-species populations. Diploid S. aria mother plants always produced sexually originated seeds, whereas tetraploid S. austriaca as well as triploid S. aria were obligate apomicts. Tetraploid S. aria preserved sexuality in a low portion of plants. A tendency towards a balanced 2m: 1p parental genome contribution to the endosperm was shared by diploids and tetraploids, regardless of their sexual or asexual origin. In contrast, most triploids apparently tolerated endosperm imbalance. * Conclusions Coexistence of apomictic tetraploids and sexual diploids drives the production of novel polyploid cytotypes with predominantly apomictic reproductive modes. The data suggest that processes governing cytotype diversity and mating system variation in Sorbus from Bosnia and Herzegovina are probably parallel to those in other diversity hotspots of this genus. The results represent a solid contribution to knowledge of the reproduction of Sorbus and will inform future investigations of the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in triggering and regulating cytotype diversity and alteration of reproductive modes. Abstract: Carassius auratus complex is believed to originate from East Eurasia and consist of diploid and triploid forms. Diploid form reproduces sexually, whereas triploid form possesses mixture modes of unisexual gynogenesis and sexual reproduction, which makes it a unique case to study evolutionary issues among vertebrates. In this study, we identified 337 triploid individuals from 386 specimens of Carassius auratus complex sampled from 4 different sites of Xingkai Lake and Suifen River on the northeast Asia transboundary areas of Russia and China, and found that triploids were ubiquitous, whereas diploids existed only in SII site of Suifen River. Triploid males were detected in all surveyed sites, and an unusually high triploid male incidence (23%) was found in the Chinese reach of Suifen River. Then, nuclear and cytoplasmic markers were used to analyze their genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship. A total of 61 distinct tf alleles and 35 mtDNA CR haplotypes were revealed. Higher genetic diversity and divergence were confirmed in triploids than in diploids, and identical genetic background between triploid males and females was demonstrated. Moreover, evolutionary implications and roles of triploid males were suggested in population proliferation and diversity creation of the triploid form. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Hybridisation is presumed to be an important mechanism in plant speciation and a creative evolutionary force often accompanied by polyploidisation and in some cases by apomixis. The Potentilla collina group constitutes a particularly suitable model system to study these phenomena as it is morphologically extensively variable, exclusively polyploid and expresses apomixis. In the present study, the alpine taxon Potentilla alpicola has been chosen in order to study its presumed hybrid origin, identify underlying evolutionary processes and infer the discreteness or taxonomic value of hybrid forms. Results: Combined analysis of AFLP, cpDNA sequences and ploidy level variation revealed a hybrid origin of the P. alpicola populations from South Tyrol (Italy) resulting from crosses between P. pusilla and two cytotypes of P. argentea. Hybrids were locally sympatric with at least one of the parental forms. Three lineages of different evolutionary origin comprising two ploidy levels were identified within P. alpicola. The lineages differed in parentage and the complexity of the evolutionary process. A geographically wide-spread lineage thus contrasted with locally distributed lineages of different origins. Populations of P. collina studied in addition, have been regarded rather as recent derivatives of the hexaploid P. argentea. The observation of clones within both P. alpicola and P. collina suggested a possible apomictic mode of reproduction. Conclusions: Different hybridisation scenarios taking place on geographically small scales resulted in viable progeny presumably stabilised by apomixis. The case study of P. alpicola supports that these processes played a significant role in the creation of polymorphism in the genus Potentilla. However, multiple origin of hybrids and backcrossing are considered to produce a variety of evolutionary spontaneous forms existing aside of reproductively stabilised, established lineages. For evolutionary studies of polyploid species estimates of the genetic identity between species with different degrees of ploidy are particularly required because gene counting in samples of polyploid individuals often cannot be done, e.g., in triploids the phenotype AB can be genotypically either ABB or AAB. We recently suggested a genetic distance measure that is based on phenotype counting and made available the computer program POPDIST. The program provides maximum-likelihood estimates of the genetic identities and distances between polyploid populations, but this approach is not informative for populations within species that only differ in their allele frequencies. We now close this gap by applying the frequencies of shared ‘bands’ in both populations to Nei's identity measure. Our simulation study demonstrates the close correlation between the band-sharing identity and the genetic identity calculated on the basis of gene frequencies for any degree of ploidy. The new extended version of POPDIST (version 1.2.0) provides the option of choosing either the maximum-likelihood estimator or the band-sharing measure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Dryopteris varia complex is highly variable in morphology, resulting in taxonomic confusion in delimiting taxon boundaries and determining relationships. We have examined the variation in morphology, chromosome number and mode of reproduction of the Korean members of the D. varia complex to clarify their taxonomic identities. Landmark analysis of the leaf blades and pinnae and the principal components analysis of 31 morphological characters revealed seven entities within the D. varia complex in Korea; these comprise D. varia s. str., D. pacifica, D. sacrosancta, D. bissetiana, D. saxifraga, D. saxifragivaria, and the Suak population which is considered to be a new taxon. Mitotic chromosome counts and examination of reproduction modes indicated that D. bissetiana in Korea appears to be agamosporous with diploid (2 n = 82) or triploid (2 n = 123) chromosome numbers. However, D. saxifraga is sexual diploid or agamosporous triploid, and the other taxa are agamosporous triploid. Dryopteris bissetiana, D. saxifraga and D. saxifragivaria are similar in major morphological characteristics, but show differences in attachment and shape of rachis scales. The results also suggest that agamosporous triploid D. saxifragivaria was probably derived from hybridization between sexual diploid D. saxifraga and D. bissetiana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nematode species Rhabditis sp. SB347 (Family Rhabditidae) in standard culture conditions displays two developmental morphs with distinct modes of sexual reproduction: (1) females and males that develop through four feeding juvenile (“larval”) stages; (2) self-fertile protandric hermaphrodites that develop through an obligatory non-feeding third juvenile stage, the “dauer” larva. In females and males, somatic gonad development begins in the first larval stage, whereas in hermaphrodites it is delayed to the second larval stage. Vulval development also differs between females and hermaphrodites: (1) the P8.p cell divides in females but stays undivided in hermaphrodites; (2) the number, timing, and source of inductive signals from the gonad to the vulval precursor cells differ between the two morphs. Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis was performed on 76 European strains of Candida dubliniensis. Ten of the 20 enzyme-encoding loci were polymorphic, giving rise to 10 electrophoretic types within the sample studied. Investigation of the population genetics of a subset of 36 strains from HIV-infected patients in London showed the existence of strong heterozygote deficits and excesses associated with significant linkage disequilibria between pairs of loci. These findings, together with the predominance of multilocus genotypes, strongly suggest that C. dubliniensis is mainly (if not totally) clonal. Analysis of genotypes of a larger number of strains should confirm this conclusion and improve our understanding of the epidemiology of this pathogen. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Due to a close contact with water column, submerged macrophytes are easily disturbed by environment change in freshwater ecosystems, especially at the seedling stage. In recent decades, freshwater ecosystems have been subject to severe cadmium (Cd) pollution, which can cause toxic effects on the growth of submerged macrophytes. Moreover, the temperature rise resulting from climate warming and water level decline may further aggravate such effect, especially in shallow lakes. Here, we investigated the independent and interaction effects of Cd exposure levels (0, 0.5, 1, and 2.5 mg L−1) and temperature (15, 25, and 30 °C) on morphological and physiological traits of Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verd. Seedlings generated from propagules and seeds. The temperature rise and Cd exposure generally resulted in a significant increase of Cd concentrations and antioxidant enzyme activities in leaves, as well as a decrease of chlorophyll a and b concentrations. The number and length of leaves generated from propagules always show a downward trend with the increase of Cd exposure, regardless of the temperature. Moreover, the lowest leaf number and length always occurred at high temperature (i.e. 30 °C) when the Cd exposure level increased to 1 and 2.5 mg L−1. For the seedlings generated from seeds, the temperature rise caused an increase of leaf emergence rate under low Cd exposure levels, but resulted in a significant decrease with the Cd exposure level. This study indicates the negative effects of Cd exposure and temperature rise on submerged macrophytes at the seedling stage, and highlights that temperature rise would enhance Cd toxicity. Diverse reproduction modes of bio-organisms open new intriguing opportunities for biochemistry-enabled materials. Herein, a new strategy is developed to explore biodirected structures for functional materials via controlling the reproduction mode. Yeast with sexual or asexual reproduction mode are employed in this work. They result in two different biodirected structures, from bowl-like hollow hemisphere to "bubble-in-sphere" (BIS) structure, for the VN x O y /C composites. Benefitting from the hierarchical structure, nanoscale particles and conductive biomass-derived carbon base, both VN x O y /C biocomposites achieve high power/energy density, good reliability, and excellent long-term cycling stability in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Deep investigations further reveal that different biodirected structures greatly influence the electrochemical properties of biocomposites. The bowl-like structures with thin shells and folded double layers achieve larger surface area and more active sites, which ensure their faster kinetics and better high rate capability. The BIS structures with a more compact assembly and higher stack capability are favorable to the better energy storage. The population structure, regeneration ways and spatial relationships of six relict deci-duous broadleaved trees were examined based on community investigation on Mount Tianmu, East China. The results showed that relict deciduous broadleaved trees had a strong ability of vegetative reproduction and their population structure was generally belonged to intermittent type. Some relict species such as Cyclocarya paliurus and Liquidamb aracalycina regenerated discontinuously at appropriate sites via long-distance diffusion. Some species such as Emmenoptery henryi and Euptelea pleiospermum regenerated discontinuously around mature trees due to habitat limitation and frequent disturbance. After occupying forest gaps by seedling regeneration, C. paliurus, L. acalycina, Nyssasinensis and Liquidambar formosana could recruit and form multi-stemmed individuals by their inherent sprouting ability at relatively stable sites such as crest slope and side slope. At riverbed, valley slope and head hollow, recognized as unstable habitats, Emmenopterys henryi, E. pleiospermum, and L. formosana could also recruit by strong sprouting ability due to sparse seedlings and individual loss incurred by disturbance. Therefore, the relict deciduous broadleaved trees could be classified into two ecological species groups (repairment species for forest gap and supplement species for special habitat) based on spatial distribution and strategy of regeneration and competition. We suggested that the protection of special habitats of their communities should be strengthened.
