Music listening affects time perception, with previous studies suggesting that a variety of factors may influence this: musical, individual, and environmental. Two experiments investigated the effect of musical factors (tonality and musical tempo) and individual factors (a listener's level of musical sophistication) on subjective estimates of duration. Participants estimated the duration of different versions of newly composed instrumental music stimuli under retrospective and prospective conditions. Stimuli varied in tempo (90–120 bpm) and tonality (tonal-atonal), in a 2 × 2 factorial design, while other musical parameters remained constant. Estimates were made using written estimates of minutes and seconds in Experiment 1, and the reproduction method in Experiment 2. Two-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) showed no main effect of tonality on estimates and no significant interactions between tempo and tonality, under any condition. Musical tempo significantly affected estimates, with the faster tempo leading to longer estimates, but only in the prospective condition, and with the use of the reproduction method. Correlation matrices using the Pearson correlation coefficient found no correlation between musical sophistication scores (measured using the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index [Gold-MSI]) and verbal or reproduction estimates. In conclusion, together with the existing literature, findings suggest that (1) changes in tonality, without further changes in rhythm, metre, or melodic contour, do not significantly affect estimates; (2) small changes in musical tempo influence only prospective reproduction estimates, with larger tempo differences or longer stimuli being needed to cause changes in retrospective estimates; (3) participants' level of musical sophistication does not impact estimates of musical duration; and (4) empirical research on music listening and subjective time must consider potential method-dependent results. Rockfall geologic hazards are widely distributed. Due to their concealed nature, rockfalls are difficult to investigate using traditional contact survey methods, and the hazards they pose affect major projects and people’s safety. Reproducing methods, including scene survey and movement process analysis, are primary tasks used to prevent these hazards; however, few reconstruction methods can directly apply the parameters of the rockfall geologic hazards obtained by the scene survey to evaluate the movement process. To address this problem, a method of reproduction based on oblique photography and three-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis (3D-DDA) is proposed; the method consists of three key techniques (oblique photography, 3D rock block system modeling, and 3D rock block system analysis). First, geometric characteristic parameters of the terrain, rockfall, and discontinuities are extracted based on oblique photography using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Second, the block system model of rockfall is reconstructed by using 3D computational geometry theory and taking these geometric characteristic parameters as an input. Finally, the whole evolution process of rockfall geologic hazard, including initiation, movement, and accumulation, is simulated by the 3D-DDA method. To verify the practicability of this reproduction method, a typical rockfall geologic hazard, located in the K8 + 050 section of the Gaohai expressway, Yunnan, China, is studied. In addition, the characteristics of 19 dangerous rock masses in the survey area are clarified, and the geometric features of the discontinuities in the rock masses are extracted based on oblique photography using an UAV. The block system model of a potential rockfall is reconstructed, the movement trajectory is simulated by the 3D-DDA method, and the evolution process of velocity and kinetic energy of the rockfall verifies that the spatial layout of the current three-level passive protective nets system is reasonable. The case study indicates that the proposed method provides a geological and mechanical model for the risk assessment of rockfall geologic hazards.

Development of a pracitcal relevance determination of the damping of stay cables The detection of the damping of prestressed stay cables repeatedly came in barely reliable results due to beats and superpositions of all types of vibrations. Over the last few decades, the methods for determining the damping have been refined and accelerated by means of new software packages, but the reproducibility of the results for the respective component or the entire system in new measurements and evaluations has not been pursued so far. In the course of laboratory tests and associated verifications, a combined application of the known methods with the verification by the new reproduction method was developed. Regardless of the time of measurement, decay, analysis staff, etc. is determined as the result of a damping corridor instead of a single damping number, in which, depending on the activated damping parameters in the course of excitation, the decay of the component or overall system will be. Using this new method, damping values can be determined reliably, comprehensibly, reproducibly and secure for the operator of the engineering structure. Multiobjective evolutionary algorithms based on decomposition (MOEA/D) decompose a multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) into a group of subproblems and optimizes them at the same time. The reproduction method in MOEA/D, which generates offspring solutions, has crucial effect on the performance of algorithm. As the difficulties of MOPs increases, it requires much higher efficiency for the reproduction methods in MOEA/D. However, for the complex optimization problems whose PS shape is complicated, the original reproduction method used in MOEA/D might not be suitable to generate excellent offspring solutions. In order to improve the property of the reproduction method for MOEA/D, this paper proposes an external archive matching strategy which selects solutions’ most matching archive solutions as parent solutions. The offspring solutions generated by this strategy can maintain a good convergence ability. To balance convergence and diversity, a perturbed learning scheme is used to extend the search space of the solutions. The experimental results on three groups of test problems reveal that the solutions obtained by MOEA/D-EAM have better convergence and diversity than the other four state-of-the-art algorithms. Previous studies have demonstrated that filled intervals are perceived as being longer than empty intervals of the same duration (i.e., the filled - duration illusion). In the present study, we asked whether the motor actions involved in filled and empty reproductions (a single continuous key press vs. two discrete key presses) would affect time estimates in a similar way. We hypothesized that reproductions of intervals of the same duration should be shorter for filled than empty reproductions (i.e., a filled - reproduction illusion). In two experiments, participants reproduced filled and empty intervals (ranging from 400 to 1,600 ms) using filled and empty reproductions. The results provided evidence for both kinds of illusions, even though the evidence was clearer for the filled - duration than for the filled - reproduction illusion. The present study demonstrates that in a situation in which both illusions work in concert, reproductions of the same interval can vary dramatically depending on the combination of interval and reproduction type. Abstract: The methods for reproducing fine grained heat affected zone of high Cr steel for creep test were investigated. This research was motivated by the need for reproducing uniform FGHAZ to investigate the creep damage process and untangle the coupling between thermal aging and cavitation (nucleation, growth, and coalesce), and the influence of states of stress. The two methods for producing FGHAZ were weld simulator and heat treatment in furnace. The microstructures, hardness, and creep rupture time under 923K/100MPa were investigated and compared with the actual FGHAZ of a weld joint. The FGHAZ specimens, re-produced by heat treatment in furnace, were also crept and compared with that of the base metal at 923K/110MPa and 100MPa. It was found that (1) both the re-produced FGHAZ showed the similar microstructures and hardness as that of actual FGHAZ of a welded joint, (2) both the re-produced FGHAZ demonstrated the similar creep rupture time and it was shorter than that of a weld joint, and (3) in comparison with the base metal, the creep test of FGHAZ, reproduced by heat treatment in furnace, shows a short transitional period and early occurrence of a tertiary stage. It is concluded that (1) the uniform FGHAZ reproduced via a weld simulator is in the order of 10–15mm long and is not big enough for creep test and (2) heat treatment in furnace can reproduce the representative FGHAZ required for creep research. Key message: This literature review identified the main factors for the success of different silvicultural approaches to regenerate sessile oak naturally and unveiled at the same time important knowledge gaps. Most previous studies were only short-term and restricted to a few factors and single locations. Hence, the findings of these studies are of limited explanatory power and do not allow to develop general, widely applicable management recommendations. Context: Successful natural regeneration of sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) through silvicultural actions depends on a number of biotic, abiotic and management factors and their interactions. However, owing to a limited understanding about the influence of these critical factors, there is great uncertainty about suitable silvicultural approaches for natural oak regeneration, in particular regarding the size of canopy openings and speed of canopy removal. Aims: This study aimed at critically evaluating documented information on natural regeneration of sessile oak. Specifically, we identified (i) the factors that determine the success of approaches for natural regeneration and (ii) evaluated the evidence base associated with different silvicultural approaches. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was done considering relevant peer-reviewed publications of ISI-listed journals as well as non-ISI listed published papers and reports by practitioners. Out of more than 260 collected references, a set of 53 silvicultural 'core publications' was identified and analyzed using a catalogue of numeric and categorical evaluation criteria. Results: The most important factors determining regeneration success extracted from the literature were light availability, presence of competing vegetation, initial oak seedling density, browsing of seedlings and intensity of stand tending measures. However, the review revealed also great uncertainty regarding the interactions between these factors and the magnitude of their influence. Most studies were of short duration and restricted to single locations. In only 20% of the experimental studies, the observation period exceeded five years. Total costs of regeneration efforts were quantified and reported in only two studies. This lack of data on the expenses of different approaches to natural oak regeneration appears to be one of the most crucial knowledge deficits revealed in this literature review. Conclusion: Natural regeneration of sessile oak may be achieved under a wide range of canopy openings, if competing vegetation and browsing is negligible, seedling density is high and tending to remove competing vegetation is carried out consistently. However, since the silvicultural regeneration success depends on the interactions among these factors, which have often not been adequately considered, we caution against general recommendations for silvicultural systems developed from case studies and call for new long-term studies with comprehensive experimental designs.
