We report a concept low gain avalanche diode (LGAD) detector to be integrated into TOPSiDE, which is being developed for EIC (Electron-Ion Collider) project. The LGAD detector will be taking its place to resolve requirement of time-of-flight measurement for the TOPSiDE project. To achieve the required timing resolution of 10 ps, the LGAD will be completely monolithic structure, eliminating the parasitic elements from hybridization. The detector itself will be consist of the LGAD sensor, amplification and discrimination, and time-over-threshold logic components. At this stage, we are optimizing the LGAD sensor design and preparing a discrete component based readout circuitry. In this work, we will present simulation result of a conceptual LGAD silicon detector and constant-fraction discriminator (CFD) circuit implementation. The timing resolution of the conceptual detector was simulated with EDA tools such as Silvaco Atlas and LTSpice with conjunction of a Monte-Carlo simulator to resolve Landau distribution into the circuit readout simulation. The best timing resolution we achieved was 23 ps.

Heavy charged particles after nuclear muon capture are an important nuclear physics background to the muon-to-electron conversion experiments Mu2e and COMET, which will search for charged lepton flavor violation at an unprecedented level of sensitivity. The AlCap experiment measured the yield and energy spectra of protons, deuterons, tritons, and alpha particles emitted after the nuclear capture of muons stopped in Al, Si, and Ti in the low energy range relevant for the muon-to-electron conversion experiments. Individual charged particle types were identified in layered silicon detector packages and their initial energy distributions were unfolded from the observed energy spectra. The motivation of this paper is to explore the parameters that affect the performance of Microchannel Plate Photomultiplier Tubes (MCP-PMTs) in magnetic fields with the goal to guide their design to achieve a high magnetic field tolerance. MCP-PMTs based on two different designs were tested.The magnetic field tolerance of MCP-PMT based on a design providing independently biased voltages showed a significant improvement (up to 0.7 T) compared to the one utilizing an internal resistor chain design (up to 0.1 T), indicating the importance of individually adjustable voltages. The effects of the rotation angle of the MCP-PMT relative to the magnetic field direction and of the bias voltage between the photocathode and the top MCP were extensively investigated using the MCP-PMT based on the independently biased voltage design. It was found that the signal amplitude of the MCP-PMT exhibits an enhanced performance at a tilt angle of $\pm$8$^{\circ}$, due to the 8$^{\circ}$ bias angle of the MCP pores. The maximum signal amplitude was observed at different bias voltages depending on the magnetic field strength.

We present a method for implementing the constraints that are implied by Maxwell's equations in fits to measurements of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring of the $g-2$ experiment. The method that we use makes use of toroidal-harmonic solutions of Laplace's equation. We point out that the fitting problem can be approximated well as a linear-algebra problem. We have devised an efficient algorithm for the linear-algebra problem that makes it possible to find a solution for $10^5$ data points and $10^4$ harmonics in less than an hour on a present-day desktop computer. Microchannel plate photodetectors provide both picosecond time resolution and sub-millimeter position resolution, making them attractive photosensors for particle identification detectors of a future U.S. Electron Ion Collider. We have tested the rate capability and magnetic field tolerance of 6$\times$6 cm$^{2}$ microchannel plate photodetectors fabricated at Argonne National Laboratory. The microchannel plate photodetector is designed as a low-cost all-glass vacuum package with a chevron pair stack of next-generation microchannel plates functionalized by atomic layer deposition. The rate capability test was performed using Fermilab's 120 GeV primary proton beam, and the magnetic field tolerance test was performed using a solenoid magnetic with tunable magnetic field strength up to 4 Tesla. The measured gain of the microchannel plate photodetector is stable up to 75 kHz/cm$^{2}$, and varies depending on the applied magnetic field strength and the rotation angle relative to the magnetic field direction.

Precision physics at future colliders requires highly granular calorimeters to support the Particle Flow Approach for event reconstruction. This article presents a review of about 10 - 15 years of R\&D, mainly conducted within the CALICE collaboration, for this novel type of detector. The performance of large scale prototypes in beam tests validate the technical concept of particle flow calorimeters. The comparison of test beam data with simulation, of e.g.\ hadronic showers, supports full detector studies and gives deeper insight into the structure of hadronic cascades than was possible previously., Comment: 55 pages, 83 figures, to appear in Reviews of Modern physics

The DHCAL, the Digital Hadron Calorimeter, is a prototype calorimeter based on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). The design emphasizes the imaging capabilities of the detector in an effort to optimize the calorimeter for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) to the reconstruction of hadronic jet energies in a colliding beam environment. The readout of the chambers is segmented into 1 x 1 cm2 pads, each read out with a 1-bit (single threshold) resolution. The prototype with approximately 500,000 readout channels underwent extensive testing in both the Fermilab and CERN test beams. This talk presents preliminary findings from the analysis of data collected at the test beams.

This paper will argue for continued effort in developing imaging calorimeters for future colliders and/or upgrades to existing detectors. Imaging calorimeters offer a plethora of advantages beyond their application in conjunction with Particle Flow Algorithms. Further R&D is needed to turn the first generation prototypes into viable detectors for colliding beam experiments.

This paper summarizes the physics potential of the CLIC high-energy e+e- linear collider. It provides input to the Snowmass 2013 process for the energy-frontier working groups on The Higgs Boson (HE1), Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions (HE2), Fully Understanding the Top Quark (HE3), as well as The Path Beyond the Standard Model -- New Particles, Forces, and Dimensions (HE4). It is accompanied by a paper describing the CLIC accelerator study, submitted to the Frontier Capabilities group of the Snowmass process., Comment: Updated the author list, updated Higgs results and small changes in the text of the Higgs section, updated results on composite Higgs bosons, added and updated references. The Digital Hadron Calorimeter (DHCAL) is a large prototype of an imaging calorimeter using Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) as active media. The readout is segmented into 1\times1 cm2 pads, each with a single bit resolution, hence the denomination of digital. The total channel count is close to 500,000. The DHCAL construction and assembly was completed in fall 2010, followed by a series of test beam campaigns in the FTBF test beam at Fermilab. In this paper we report on the analysis of events collected with the broadband muon beam. These events are utilized to geometrically align the layers horizontally and vertically, to establish the response as function of position on a single readout pad, and to measure the performance characteristics of the RPCs, i.e. the efficiency and average pad multiplicity. The latter were measured in both 'clean' regions of the detector, i.e. away from structures such as the rims of the chambers, and as function of position on the entire vertical plane. In addition, the paper reviews the preliminary measurements of the noise rate in the detector.

This talk reviews the development of imaging calorimeters for the purpose of applying Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) to the measurement of hadronic jets at a future lepton collider. After a short introduction, the current status of PFA developments is presented, followed by a review of the major developments in electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry.

The DHCAL collaboration is assembling a large scale prototype Digital Hadron Calorimeter (DHCAL). The calorimeter utilizes Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) as active medium and features of the order of 400,000 1 \times 1 cm2 pads with binary (or digital) electronic readout. The purpose of the prototype is to provide detailed measurements of hadronic showers and to prove the concept of a DHCAL with RPCs as active elements.

We review the status and plans of the Digital Hadron Calorimeter with Resistive Plate Chambers project.

In the context of developing a hadron calorimeter with extremely fine granularity for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms to the measurement of jet energies at a future lepton collider, we report on extensive tests of a small scale prototype calorimeter. The calorimeter contained up to 10 layers of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with 2560 1 \times 1 cm2 readout pads, interleaved with steel absorber plates. The tests included both long-term Cosmic Ray data taking and measurements in particle beams, where the response to broadband muons and to pions and positrons with energies in the range of 1 - 16 GeV was established. Detailed measurements of the chambers efficiency as function of beam intensity have also been performed using 120 GeV protons at varying intensity. The data are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and to analytical calculations of the rate limitations.

This paper reports on the performance of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) as function of the gas flow rate through the chambers and of environmental conditions, such as atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature and air humidity. The chambers are read out by pads with an area of 1 x 1 cm2 and a 1-bit resolution per pad. The performance measures include the noise rate as well as the detection efficiency and pad multiplicity for cosmic rays. The measurements extended over a period of almost one year and are sensitive to possible long-term aging effects.

A small prototype of a finely granulated digital hadron calorimeter with Resistive Plate Chambers as active elements was exposed to positive pions of 1 >. 16 GeV energy from the Fermilab test beam. The event selection separates events with mostly non-interacting particles and events with hadronic showers which initiated in the front part of the calorimeter. The data are compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of the set-up. The paper concludes with predictions for the performance of an extended digital hadron calorimeter.
