Objectives: This paper examines the gender gap in unhealthy life expectancy across education levels and age in Spain to understand the extent to which the gender paradox exists over education and across ages. Methods: Death registrations and vital status were taken from the Spanish Statistical Office, while the three health measures (chronic conditions, bad-self rated health and cognitive impairment) from the 2019 European Health Interview Survey. We used Sullivan’s method to compute unhealthy life expectancy by education level. We computed the gender and the education ratios of the proportion of unhealthy life years in each health measure by education and age. Results: At almost all ages and all education levels, women significantly lived longer but in poorer health than men. Marked gender differences are seen across most age-groups, particularly among the low educated. We detected greater health inequalities by education level for women (confirming the gender paradox) and a health gradient due to aging and across the health measures charting the disablement process. Conclusion: The new education distribution might improve the unhealthy life expectancy and might reduce the gender gap in the number of years spent in poor health. Long-term unemployment has severe negative consequences. However, little is known about how long people could expect to be unemployed for more than one year during their lifespan, and which age groups are spending more time out of work while looking for jobs. We apply demographic techniques to enhance our understanding of long-term unemployment, and use the European Labour Force Survey and mortality data to calculate the time that a person could expect to be unemployed for more than a year in 25 European countries between 2000 and 2018. We identify four groups of countries that are characterised by different trends in the duration of long-term unemployment. Results show very different impact of the 2008 Recession on the length of long-term unemployment in Europe, and it was especially large in Southern and Eastern countries, as well as in Ireland. In addition, although younger workers record higher rates of long-term unemployment, older workers could expect to spend a larger proportion of their working lives unemployed. Finally, we show that, in some countries, the measure of long-term unemployment has been underestimated due to a discouraged worker effect.

La COVID-19 ha suposat una aturada en la contínua progressió de l'esperança de vida en néixer, que a Espanya es situava entre les més altes del món. Malgrat que el seu efecte depressiu sigui conjuntural, ja que s'espera que millori de forma ràpida els propers anys, ens ha fet reflexionar sobre l'evolució prèvia a la pandèmia. És cert que l'augment dels anys de vida ha estat progressiu i continuat, però en els darrers anys aquests guanys no s'han traduït en millores a la salut entre la població gran. Tot i que l'esperança de vida lliure de discapacitats als 65 anys ha estat molt estable en el temps, els resultats són menys encoratjadors quan es considera la presència de malalties i condicions cròniques. En aquest número del Perspectives Demogràfiques investiguem si s'han guanyat o perdut anys de vida lliures de malalties a l'edat de 65 anys entre el anys 2006, 2012 i 2017 pels homes i dones a Espanya i per comunitats autònomes (CCAA). Els resultats indiquen que, malgrat l'augment en anys d'esperança de vida, també augmenta el temps que les persones viurem amb malalties diagnosticades si no es reverteix la tendència actual. Entre les malalties i condicions més freqüents hi ha la hipertensió, el mal d'esquena crònic, la diabetis i les malalties del cor. Les diferències entre homes i dones tendeixen a convergir en anys de vida passats en bona salut com a conseqüència, principalment, de l'allargament dels anys de vida viscuts en mala salut entre els homes. The COVID-19 pandemic has put a stop to the continuous progression in life expectancy at birth, in which Spain was one of the world leaders. Although this downward effect is a result of the present conjuncture and it is hoped that recovery will be swift in the coming years, this situation has led us to consider the evolution prior to the pandemic. It is true that the increase in number of years of life has been progressive and steady but, in recent years, these gains have not implied improved health among the older population. Disability-free life expectancy at the age of 65 has been very stable over time, but the figures are less encouraging when the presence of diseases and chronic conditions are taken into account. In this issue of Perspectives Demogràfiques, we investigate whether there have been gains or losses in years of disease-free life for men and women at the age of 65 in Spain and by autonomous community (AC) in the years 2006, 2012, and 2017. The results indicate that increased life expectancy will also mean that people will live more time with diagnosed diseases unless the present trend is reversed. The most common ailments and conditions include hypertension, chronic back pain, diabetes, and heart disease. The differences between men and women tend to converge in years of life in good health, mainly as a result of a lengthening of time lived in poor health among men. La COVID-19 ha supuesto un parón en la continua progresión de la esperanza de vida al nacer, que en España se situaba entre las más altas del mundo. A pesar de que su efecto depresivo sea coyuntural, ya que se espera que mejore de forma rápida en los próximos años, nos ha hecho reflexionar sobre la evolución previa a la pandemia. Es cierto que el aumento de los años de vida ha sido progresivo y continuado, pero en los últimos años estas ganancias no se han traducido en mejoras en la salud entre la población mayor. Aunque la esperanza de vida libre de discapacidad a los 65 años ha sido muy estable en el tiempo, los resultados son menos alentadores cuando se considera la presencia de enfermedades y condiciones crónicas. En este número de Perspectives Demogràfiques investigamos si se han ganado o perdido años de vida libres de enfermedades a la edad de 65 años entre los años 2006, 2012 y 2017 entre los hombres y mujeres en España y por comunidades autónomas (CCAA). Los resultados indican que, a pesar del aumento en años de esperanza de vida, también aumenta el tiempo que las personas viviremos con enfermedades diagnosticadas si no se revierte la tendencia actual. Entre las enfermedades y condiciones más frecuentes están la hipertensión, el dolor de espalda crónico, la diabetes y las enfermedades del corazón. Las diferencias entre hombres y mujeres tienden a converger en años de vida pasados en buena salud como consecuencia, principalmente, del alargamiento de los años de vida vividos en mala salud entre los hombres.

El envejecimiento es uno de los mayores retos a los que se enfrentan las sociedades avanzadas en el futuro próximo. El cambio en la composición por edades de la población obliga a repensar muchas de las estructuras sociales instauradas a lo largo del último siglo en busca de un mayor bienestar, surgidas en condiciones demográficas bien diferentes. Afrontar este reto con garantías exige análisis rigurosos en el marco de la economía intergeneracional, para comprender cómo se relacionan económicamente las diferentes generaciones que conviven en cada momento. Las Cuentas Nacionales de Transferencias suponen un gran avance en la disponibilidad de datos para este tipo de análisis.

Entre els 30 i els 39 anys, molts han de prendre algunes de les decisions més importants de la seva vida, com per exemple tenir fills o establir-se en parella de manera estable. A Espanya, l'edat mitjana al primer fill entre les dones és de 30,8, l'edat al matrimoni ronda els 35 (37,7 entre els homes) i el perfil mitjà del signant d'una hipoteca té 38 anys. Així doncs, des d'un punt de vista agregat, tota la societat s'hi juga molt en funció de com els seus adults joves se'n surten durant aquestes edats. Tanmateix, totes les dades apunten a un augment constant de les formes de treball precari, amb una especial incidència en les generacions femenines. De fet, Espanya, juntament amb Polònia, lidera el percentatge de contractació temporal a Europa. Amb tot, no hi ha càlculs exactes de la durada d'aquest tipus d'ocupació al llarg de la vida. Aquest estudi estima quant temps passen els adults joves entre 30 i 39 anys en condicions d'ocupació precàries, i compara 22 generacions entre 1987 i 2017. Els resultats mostren que el temps en ocupació precària s'ha doblat, i la primera generació observada, nascuda el 1957, va passar la meitat d'anys que la del 1978 en temporalitat i inseguretat contractual. Les dones han estat especialment afectades per l'expansió d'aquestes condicions i, a més a més, per elles l'assoliment d'alts nivells educatius no sembla protegir-les de la precarietat. En España, la edad media al primer hijo de las mujeres es de 30,8 años, la del matrimonio ronda los 35 (37,7 la de los hombres) y el perfil medio del firmante de una hipoteca tiene 38 años. Así pues, desde un punto de vista agregado, toda la sociedad puede ganar o perder mucho en función de cómo les vayan las cosas a los jóvenes de esta franja de edad, a los que llamaremos adultos jóvenes. Sin embargo, las cosas no parecen pintar bien para ellos. Todos los datos apuntan a un aumento constante de las formas de trabajo precarias, con una especial incidencia entre las generaciones femeninas. De hecho, España, junto con Polonia, lidera el porcentaje de contratación temporal en Europa. Con todo, no hay cálculos exactos de la duración de este tipo de empleo a lo largo de la vida. Este estudio estima cuánto tiempo pasaran los adultos jóvenes entre los 30 y los 39 años en condiciones de empleo precario comparando la vida laboral de 22 generaciones entre los años 1987 y 2017. Los resultados muestran que el tiempo en empleo precario se ha doblado y la primera generación observada, nacida en 1957, pasó la mitad de años en temporalidad e inseguridad contractual que la de 1978. Las mujeres se vieron especialmente afectadas por la expansión de estas condiciones y, además, el logro de altos niveles educativos no pareció protegerlas de la precariedad. Between the ages of 30 and 39, many people make important decisions for their lives, such as having children, getting married or settling down in long-term relationships. In Spain, the median age at first birth among women is 30.8, couples get married at 35 on average (35 years old among women and 37.7 among men), and sign a mortgage around 38. Therefore, from an aggregate point of view, all of society has something to win, or lose, depending on how their young adults do during these ages. However, evidence points to a consistent increase of precarious work over time and across generations, especially for women. Spain, together with Poland, recently recorded the highest percentage of temporary employment in Europe. Yet, no exact calculations on the duration of this type of work are available for Spain. This study aims to estimate the length of the time that Spaniards are expected to be engaged in temporary and insecure work during their thirties comparing 22 cohorts, given the importance of this age interval for our societies. We found that time spent in precarious employment doubled between 1987 and 2017 for men and women, and generations born in 1978 spent twice the time in insecure and temporary jobs than those born in 1957. More importantly, women are especially affected by these types of employment conditions, and higher education levels do not seem to protect them from lower quality jobs.

A Espanya continua havent-hi una important diferència entre l'activitat productiva d'homes i dones. Mentre que els homes dediquen gran part de la seva vida activa a feines remunerades, les dones passen més temps tenint cura dels infants i de les persones grans dependents, a més de gestionar la llar. Aquest estudi presenta els perfils per edat de consum i producció remunerada i no remunerada, diferenciats per sexe. Els resultats posen de manifest la importància que tenen la cura i les activitats no remunerades en el benestar de les persones, com també la necessitat de repensar el sistema de polítiques públiques i socials amb l'objectiu de reduir els costos de conciliar la vida familiar amb la laboral. Aquesta necessitat és evident en el cas de les dones, que, quan són mares, incrementen considerablement les hores de feina totals i, en molts casos, queden excloses de la protecció que impliquen les feines remunerades. En España continúa existiendo una importante diferencia entre la actividad productiva de hombres y mujeres. Mientras que los hombres dedican la mayor parte de su vida activa a trabajos remunerados, las mujeres pasan más tiempo cuidando a los niños y a los mayores dependientes, además de gestionar la casa. En este estudio se presentan los perfiles por edad de consumo y producción remunerada y no remunerada diferenciados por sexo. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto la importancia que tienen los cuidados y las actividades no remuneradas en el bienestar de las personas, así como la necesidad de repensar el sistema de políticas públicas y sociales con el objetivo de reducir los costes de conciliar la vida familiar con el trabajo. Esta necesidad es evidente en el caso de las mujeres, que, cuando son madres, incrementan considerablemente sus horas de trabajo totales y, en muchos casos, quedan excluidas de la protección que supone tener un empleo remunerado. A significant difference still exists in Spain between the productive activity of men and women. While men devote the larger part of their active life to paid work, women spend more time caring for children and elderly dependents, as well as running the household. This study presents the profiles by age, of consumption and paid and unpaid production differentiated by sex. The results clearly manifest the importance of care tasks and unpaid activities for people's wellbeing, along with the need to rethink the system of public and social policies with the aim of reducing the costs of reconciling family life with work. This need is evident in the case of women, who, when they are mothers, see a considerable increase in their total working hours and, in many cases, are excluded from the protection represented by being in paid employment.

The impact of population structure on economic growth has been studied in recent decades using different methods to estimate the so-called demographic dividend. Besides, education has been pointed out as a key factor in economic growth. We propose a decomposition of the demographic dividend, into age and education effects. We illustrate the potential of the method by illustrating its application to Mexico and Spain over the period 1970-2100. To that end, we estimate the National Transfer Accounts age profiles by schooling level and apply them to recently available population projections stratified by educational level. Our results confirm the role of population age structure in the demographic dividend, but also reveal that education attainment can be even more crucial. Moreover, we find that the way how both age and education effects finally impact on economic growth depends to a great extent on the specific consumption and labor income age profiles in each country.
