The evolution of miniaturization can result in dramatic alterations of morphology, physiology, and behavior; however, the effects of miniaturization on sexual dimorphism remain largely unknown. Here we investigate how miniaturization influences patterns of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in geckos. Measuring 1,875 individuals from 131 species, we characterized patterns of SSD relative to body size across two families. We found that miniaturized species were more female biased than non-miniaturized species. Additionally, one family that contained many miniaturized species (Sphaerodactylidae) displayed allometric patterns in SSD with body size, where larger species were male biased and smaller species were more female biased. Smaller species in this lineage also produced proportionally larger eggs. By contrast, another family containing few miniaturized species (Phyllodactylidae) displayed a more isometric trend. Together, these observations are consistent with the hypothesis that selection for increased reproductive success in small species of Sphaerodactylidae results in female-biased SSD in these taxa, which in turn drives the positive SSD allometry observed in this lineage. Thus, selection for increased miniaturization in the clade may be offset by selection on maintaining a female size in smaller taxa that ensures reproductive success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ectotherms exhibit varying geographic size patterns shaped by environmental and evolutionary factors. This variability is noticeable within taxonomic groups. For instance, certain testudinids follow Bergmann's rule (body size increases with latitude) and Rensch's rule (sexual size dimorphism correlates with body size), while others do not. Here we hypothesize that body size patterns can even vary within a monophyletic lineage. To address this, we evaluated the body size patterns of the spur-thighed tortoise Testudo graeca that globally follows Bergmann's and Rensch's rules. We specifically investigated the influence of climate variables, latitude and elevation within the subspecies T. g. whitei throughout its natural distribution in North Africa, and in a recently expanded range in SE Spain (20 kya old). We found that males were smaller than females in both regions. The tortoises from SE Spain were smaller than those from North Africa, which showcased the smallest sizes ever reported for the species. Latitude was the main variable to explain tortoise body size. In particular, body size decreased with latitude in both regions, which contrasts with Bergmann's rule expectations based on species-level findings. Finally, to further contradict species-level expectations, we did not find any statistical correlation between sexual size dimorphism and body size across the two studied regions. Such contradictory outcomes reveal complex geographic size patterns within T. graeca and raise conservation questions about demographic viability at smaller-sized sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corbiculate bees offer the opportunity to analyse the evolution of differences in body size between sexes in relationship to the social environment, because this group of phylogenetically related taxa have contrasting levels of social organization, ranging from solitary to highly eusocial. Sexual size dimorphism evolves because body size is usually related to reproductive success through different pathways in females and males. Female body size is strongly correlated with fecundity, whereas in males the body size is correlated with mating success. Within a clade, if sexual selection on males has been stronger than selection on female fecundity, a sexual size dimorphism bias to males would be expected (Rensch's rule), or an opposite trend when the fecundity of females has had a stronger effect. We tested these predictions by taking an allometric approach that considered differences in the capacity of a reproductive female to start a nest on her own or not. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole clade and another analysis including only species in which the females start nests on their own showed that the corbiculate bees do not seem to follow Rensch's rule. The males and reproductive females of the species in which the females have lost their capacity to start nests were smaller than the reproductive individuals of species in which the females start nests on their own, suggesting that selective pressures linked to the evolution of sociality might constrain the evolution of a large body size in both males and reproductive females. Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is a common phenomenon across the animal kingdom. Mammals are unusual in primarily displaying male-biased SSD, where males of a species are typically larger than females. The driving factors behind the evolution of this SSD have been much debated, with popular hypotheses invoking the influence of mating system and social organization via sexual selection, dietary niche divergence and broad-scale correlations with body size (Rensch's rule). Here, we investigate the macroevolutionary origins and maintenance of SSD among mammals, using phylogenetic general mixed linear models and a comprehensive global dataset to evaluate correlations of diet, body mass, seasonality, social organization and mating system with SSD type. We find that SSD as a whole is lost at a greater rate than it is gained, with female-biased SSD being particularly unstable. Non-monogamous mating systems, vertebrate prey consumption and temperature seasonality correlate with male-biased SSD, while polyandry correlates with female-biased SSD, and both types of SSD are positively correlated with body mass. This is in partial contrast to the predictions of Rensch's rule, which predicts that female-biased SSD would correlate negatively with body size. Taken together, our results highlight the importance of considering multiple ecological and social drivers when evaluating the macroevolutionary trajectory of sex differences in body size. Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is shaped by multiple selective forces that drive the evolution of sex-specific body size, resulting in male or female-biased SSD. Stronger selection on one sex can result in an allometric body size scaling relationship consistent with Rensch's rule or its converse. Anurans (frogs and toads) generally display female-biased SSD, but there is variation across clades and the mechanisms driving the evolution of SSD remain poorly understood. We investigated these topics in a diverse family of African treefrogs (Hyperoliidae). Hyperoliids display traits considered rare among amphibians, including sexual dichromatism and protogynous sex change. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, we tested if adult ecology, sexual dichromatism, and sex change were predictors of body size or SSD. We also tested whether hyperoliids displayed allometric interspecific body size scaling relationships. We found a majority of hyperoliid taxa display female-biased SSD, but that adult ecology and sexual dichromatism are poor predictors of sex-specific body size and SSD. Regardless of the groupings analyzed (partitioned by clades or traits), we found support for isometric body size scaling. However, we found that sex change is a significant predictor of SSD variation. Species in the Hyperolius viridiflavus complex, which putatively display this trait, show a significant reduction in SSD and are frequently sexually monomorphic in size. Although protogynous sex change needs to be validated for several of these species, we tentatively propose this trait is a novel mechanism influencing anuran body size evolution. Beyond this association, additional factors that shape the evolution of anuran body size and SSD remain elusive.

Geographical variation in sexual size dimorphism (SSD) can result from the combined effects of environmental and sexual selection. To understand the determinants of SSD across geographical landscapes, we tested for relationships between SSD and climatic variables in the widespread lizard Anolis carolinensis. To distinguish alternative hypotheses for observed patterns of variation in SSD, we also examined sex-specific patterns of body size evolution and asked whether SSD was associated with certain patterns of sexual shape dimorphism. We found strong evidence for Rensch's rule (an increase in male-biased SSD with average body size) in A. carolinensis and evidence for the reversed version of Bergmann's rule (an increase in body size towards warmer environments) in males. Across populations, SSD was positively related to temperature; however, female body size was not related to any climatic variable, suggesting that the latitudinal gradient of SSD might be driven by a gradient in the intensity of sexual selection acting on males. Sexual size dimorphism was positively correlated with sexual dimorphism in head shape and negatively correlated with limb length dimorphism, suggesting that sexual selection in males might drive the evolution of SSD and that differences in size and limb shape between sexes might represent alternative strategies to avoid competition for the same resources. Rensch's rule suggests that sexual size dimorphism (SSD) increases with species size when males are the larger sex, whereas it decreases when females are the larger sex. However, the process responsible for this pattern remains obscure. SSD can result from sexual selection, such as intrasexual competition for access to mates, or from natural selection, due to resource partitioning or fecundity selection. We studied SSD in Caribbean Eleutherodactylus frogs using phylogenetic comparative methods to investigate the influence of microhabitat, fecundity, and parental care. Our results show that in Caribbean Eleutherodactylus females tend to be larger and, contrary to Rensch's rule, dimorphism increases with species size. SSD was not related to microhabitat use. However, SSD was positively correlated with fecundity, mediated by a greater increase in female size. SSD was also influenced by parental care, suggesting that male care promotes larger male size and reduces the female bias in SSD. As suggested for other anurans, female‐biased SSD in Caribbean Eleutherodactylus results from fecundity selection, although the magnitude is countered by increased male size in species with paternal care. Rensch's Rule describes a pattern of interspecific allometry in which sexual size dimorphism (SSD) increases with size among closely related species (i.e., among a group of related species, the largest ones tend to show more male-biased SSD). Sexual selection is often invoked to explain Rensch's Rule, as larger male body size is assumed to be favoured by sexual selection for increased fighting performance in contests for mating opportunities. Often, however, the correlation between size and performance is not well described. We studied a sexually selected performance trait, bite force in Anolis lizards, to determine whether patterns of SSD are linked to size-associated patterns of performance dimorphism at the macroevolutionary level, as expected under the sexual selection hypothesis for Rensch's Rule. Additionally, we tested whether allometric patterns of performance dimorphism differ between mainland and island species, as the latter have likely evolved under a stronger sexual selection regime. We found that SSD overwhelmingly explains the relationship between performance dimorphism and size in anoles, as expected under a sexual selection model for Rensch's Rule. However, residual performance dimorphism was higher in island than in mainland species, suggesting that these groups differ in performance dimorphism for reasons unrelated to size. Head size dimorphism was associated with residual performance dimorphism, but did not fully explain the difference in performance dimorphism between island and mainland species. Together, these findings highlight the need to interpret Rensch's Rule patterns of body size evolution cautiously, as allometric patterns of performance dimorphism and size dimorphism might not be equivalent., (© The Author(s) 2024. Geomyoid rodents provide a great study system for the analysis of sexual dimorphism. They are polygynic and many inhabit harsh arid environments thought to promote sexual dimorphism. In fact, there has been extensive work published on the sexual size dimorphism of individual populations and species within this rodent clade. However, little work has been undertaken to assess the evolutionary patterns and processes associated with this sexual dimorphism. We use multivariate analyses of cranial measurements in a phylogenetic framework to determine the distribution of size and shape dimorphism among geomyoids and test for Rensch's rule. Our results suggest that sexual dimorphism is more common in geomyids than heteromyids, but it is not in fact universal. There is evidence for variation in sexual dimorphism across populations. Additionally, in many taxa, geographic variation appears to overwhelm existing sexual dimorphism. We find support for the repeated independent evolution of shape and size dimorphism across geomyoid taxa, but we do not find support for an association between size and shape dimorphism. There is no evidence for Rensch's rule in geomyoids, whether at the superfamily or family level. Together, our findings suggest that there is no single explanation for the evolution of sexual dimorphism in geomyoids and that, instead, it is the product of numerous evolutionary events. Many fish species exhibit female-biased size dimorphism that may lead to spatial segregation of sexes. We selected two common European percids (Percidae, European perch Perca fluviatilis and ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua) differing in total body size, reproduction mode, habitat use and diurnal activity, to test whether they display size dimorphism and its effect on habitat use and diet. Females were significantly larger than equally old males (by 76% in perch, 23% in ruffe). No differences in habitat use by sexes were found along depth and longitudinal gradients of reservoir or between inshore and offshore habitats. Perch females had fuller guts, but both sexes were equally likely to consume same prey items (Leptodora kindtii, Daphnia spp., Chironomidae larvae, fish). Both sexes of ruffe had similar stomachs fullness, but females preferred L. kindtii and males Asellus aquaticus. In summary, perch and ruffe show strong female-biased size dimorphism, but sexes do not segregate spatially. Their unequal sex-specific dietary demands are satisfied by higher feeding rate of female perch and by preference for different prey items in ruffe. Body size mediates life history, physiology and inter- and intra-specific interactions. Within species, sexes frequently differ in size, reflecting divergent selective pressures and/or constraints. Both sexual selection and differences in environmentally mediated reproductive constraints can drive sexual size dimorphism, but empirically testing causes of dimorphism is challenging. Manakins (Pipridae), a family of Neotropical birds comprising approximately 50 species, exhibit a broad range of size dimorphism from male- to female-biased and are distributed across gradients of precipitation and elevation. Males perform courtship displays ranging from simple hops to complex aerobatic manoeuvres. We tested associations between sexual size dimorphism and (a) agility and (b) environment, analysing morphological, behavioural and environmental data for 22 manakin species in a phylogenetic framework. Sexual dimorphism in mass was most strongly related to agility, with males being lighter than females in species performing more aerial display behaviours. However, wing and tarsus length dimorphism were more strongly associated with environmental variables, suggesting that different sources of selection act on different aspects of body size. These results highlight the strength of sexual selection in shaping morphology—even atypical patterns of dimorphism—while demonstrating the importance of constraints and ecological consequences of body size evolution. A positive relationship of body size and sexual size dimorphism (males' size relative to females), called Rensch's rule, is often observed in comparisons within non-parasitic taxa. However, this allometric relationship has rarely been tested in comparisons across closely related parasite species. Since male sexual rivalry is often regarded as the main cause of this phenomenon, the present study tests this rule in a taxon where sexual selection is almost totally absent in males. Body size data of (non-physogastric) female and male quill mites (Acari: Syringophilidae) were gathered from the literature to investigate this relationship. The data set consisted of 113 species representing 8 genera. For the data set as a whole, increasing body size came together with decreasing relative body size of males (relative to females), a phenomenon known as converse Rensch's rule. Repeating the same analysis for the 8 genera separately, similar patterns were found in 4 significant and 3 non-significant cases. There was a significant tendency to comply with Rensch's rule only in one genus, the Neoaulonastus. Thus, converse Rensch's rule is the primary trend in syringophilid quill mites that appears repeatedly and independently in several genera. Abstract Reproductive mode, ancestry, and climate are hypothesized to determine body size variation in reptiles but their effects have rarely been estimated simultaneously, especially at the intraspecific level. The common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) occupies almost the entire Northern Eurasia and includes viviparous and oviparous lineages, thus representing an excellent model for such studies. Using body length data for >10,000 individuals from 72 geographically distinct populations over the species' range, we analyzed how sex‐specific adult body size and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is associated with reproductive mode, lineage identity, and several climatic variables. Variation in male size was low and poorly explained by our predictors. In contrast, female size and SSD varied considerably, demonstrating significant effects of reproductive mode and particularly seasonality. Populations of the western oviparous lineage (northern Spain, south‐western France) exhibited a smaller female size and less female‐biased SSD than those of the western viviparous (France to Eastern Europe) and the eastern viviparous (Eastern Europe to Far East) lineages; this pattern persisted even after controlling for climatic effects. The phenotypic response to seasonality was complex: across the lineages, as well as within the eastern viviparous lineage, female size and SSD increase with increasing seasonality, whereas the western viviparous lineage followed the opposing trends. Altogether, viviparous populations seem to follow a saw‐tooth geographic cline, which might reflect the nonmonotonic relationship of body size at maturity in females with the length of activity season. This relationship is predicted to arise in perennial ectotherms as a response to environmental constraints caused by seasonality of growth and reproduction. The SSD allometry followed the converse of Rensch's rule, a rare pattern for amniotes. Our results provide the first evidence of opposing body size—climate relationships in intraspecific units.

Sexual dimorphism is widespread among animals, with diverse patterns and proposed explanations observed across the Tree of Life. Here we present the first formal analysis of the patterns of sexual dimorphism in body size and cephalic sensory appendages across 40 species (from 10 genera) of armoured tardigrades (Echiniscidae). Phylogenetic signal was found for body size traits and the cephalic papilla relative size, indicating that the association between these traits between the sexes has high evolutionary persistence. The Echiniscidae body size dimorphism is generally female-biased, which would be in accordance with the fecundity hypothesis. No strong evidence of allometric patterns of body size sexual dimorphism was found. In contrast, some of the cephalic appendages show male-biased sexual dimorphism, particularly those that, by being more innervated, are thought to function as chemodetection organs used by males during mate search. The latter is consistent with the sexual selection hypothesis. As the first systematic quantification and analysis of the patterns of sexual dimorphism in the phylum Tardigrada, this study provides important insights into their ecology and evolution, such as corroborating the suggestion that cephalic appendages evolved for mate searching.

Rensch's rule describes sexual size dimorphism (SSD) that decreases with increasing body size when females are larger than males and SSD that increases when males are larger than females. The plateau brown frog Rana kukunoris, a species endemic to the eastern Tibetan Plateau, exhibits female-biased size dimorphism. Using data on body size from 26 populations and age from 21 populations, we demonstrated that SSD did not increase with increasing mean female snout-vent length (SVL) when controlling for sex-specific age structure, failing to support the Rensch's rule. Thus, we suggest that fecundity selection (favouring large female size) balances out sexual selection (favouring large male size), which results in a similar divergence between males and females body size. According to Rensch's rule, sexual size dimorphism (SSD) decreases with increasing body size in species where females are larger than males, whereas SSD increases with body size when males are larger than females. In this study, we examined body size from 15 populations of Bufo minshanicus in the Qinghai–Tibet plateau in China. We estimated the age of the individuals from eight populations to evaluate Rensch's rule and possible causes of variation in SSD. After or before correcting male and female body size for age differences, the patterns of SSD failed to obey Rensch's rule or its inverse, even though fecundity selection in toads tends to favor larger female body size. We also found that the degree of SSD was positively correlated with the operational sex ratio in the field across B. minshanicus populations. Thus, sexual and fecundity selection play an equal role driving the evolution of SSD within toads. Opposing life history strategies are a common result of the different ecological settings experienced by insular and continental species. Here we present a comprehensive compilation of data on sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and life history traits of Microlophus , a genus of lizards distributed in western South America and the Galápagos Islands, and test for differences between insular and continental species under life history theory expectations. Contrary to our predictions, we found no differences in SSD between localities or evidence that Microlophus follows Rensch's rule. However, as expected, head dimensions and maturity sizes were significantly larger in insular species while continental species had larger clutches. Our results show that Microlophus exhibits some of the patterns expected from an island-mainland system, but unexplained patterns will only be resolved through future ecological, morphological and behavioural studies integrating both faunas. Abstract Sexual‐size dimorphism (SSD) is ubiquitous across animals and often biased in the direction of larger females in snakes and other ectothermic organisms. To understand how SSD evolves across species, Rensch's rule predicts that in taxa where males are larger, SSD increases with body size. In contrast, where females are larger, SSD decreases with body size. While this rule holds for many taxa, it may be ambiguous for others, particularly ectothermic vertebrates. Importantly, this rule suggests that the outcomes of SSD over phylogenetic time scales depend on the direction of dimorphism predicated on the difference in reproductive efforts between males and females. Here, we examine SSD in the context of Rensch's rule in Thamnophiini, the gartersnakes and watersnakes, a prominent group that in many areas comprises the majority of the North American snake biota. Using a dated phylogeny, measurements of gape, body, and tail size, we show that these snakes do not follow Rensch's rule, but rather female‐biased SSD increases with body size. We in turn find that this allometry is most pronounced with gape and is correlated with both neonate and litter size, suggesting that acquiring prey of increased size may be directly related to fecundity selection. These changes in SSD are not constrained to any particular clade; we find no evidence of phylogenetic shifts in those traits showing SSD. African mole-rats of the genus Fukomys (Northern common mole-rats) combine a monogamous mating system and pronounced sexual size dimorphism; a pattern highly untypical for mammals. At the same time, they live in cooperatively breeding groups composed of reproductive and non-reproductive members of both sexes. How and to which degree sex and breeding status influence morphofunctional characters in eusocial mole-rats is not well characterized but essential to come to a comprehensive understanding of their peculiar social system. Here, we explore patterns of morphological differentiation in skulls of Ansell’s mole-rats (Fukomys anselli) by means of multivariate analysis of linear skull measurements combined with a 2D shape analysis of cranium and mandible. Compared to females, males display larger skulls relative to body size and show an expansion of the facial portion of the cranium, while reproductive status did not have an effect on any of the traits studied. We also show that species of Fukomys mole-rats display a scaling of relative sexual body size dimorphism in compliance to Rensch’s rule, which is deemed indicative of intense male intrasexual competition. For the bathyergid family as a whole, results of scaling analyses were more ambiguous, but also indicative of Rensch’s rule conformity. In line with genetic field data, our results point to a greater role of male-male conflicts in Fukomys than is traditionally assumed and support the notion that reproductive status does not correlate with morphofunctional segregation in these unusual rodents.

Rensch's rule is an allometric rule on sexual size dimorphism. It states that in small-sized species, females are larger than males, whereas in larger species, males are relatively larger than females. Several studies have explored this pattern, and its inverse in lizard species. China has a unique and high diversity of species, with a variety of ecological systems which shape diversity of phenotypes. In this study, sexual size dimorphism and Rensch's rule were determined using a dataset of Chinese lizard species. The findings show that Chinese lizards generally exhibit female-biased sexual size dimorphism. In addition, clutch size was positively correlated with sexual size dimorphism. Agamidae species were the only taxa that followed Rensch's rule (slope of males against females was steeper than 1). Clutch size was correlated with sexual size dimorphism in groups that do not follow Rensch's rule. Body size correlates with several factors such as reproductive fitness, environmental changes, the quality and quantity of food during critical development stages, and the feeding season. For the Palearctic moths of the genus Thaumetopoea (Lepidoptera; Notodontidae), the larval development is crucial and differs between species according to their feeding season; larvae of the pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller 1775) feed during winter while larvae of its congeneric cedar processionary moth Thaumetopoea bonjeani (Powell 1922) develop during summer in North Africa.This discrepancy in lifecycles leads to different reproductive traits such as egg batch length, number of eggs per batch, eggs protection mechanisms and female body size.According to Darwin's fecundity advantage hypothesis (1871), female body size should have a positive influence on reproductive fitness, since larger females supposedly have higher fecundity. The universal allometric scaling phenomenon rule proposed by Rensch (1950) predicts that the degree of sexual size dimorphism tends to decrease with the increase of female body size.Here, two morphometrical parameters that is, body size and scale size, estimated from body measurements of individuals of both species, feeding on the same host Atlantic cedar Cedrus atlantica (Manetti & Carrière 1855) (Pinales; Pinaceae) in Algeria were proposed. The aim was to find out traits that might rule the competition for food and space, in particularly fecundity and body size.Results of the present study highlight a female‐biased sexual size dimorphism in both species. The positive correlation between female body size and fecundity shown in this study weakly supports Darwin's hypothesis. The importance of interspecific competition in structuring communities of plant-eating insects has been somewhat controversial. If interspecific competition is ever important for phytophagous insects, it is likely to be observed in the insect guild that feeds in the phloem of trees. We tested for signals of interspecific competition in co-occurring species of pine sawyer beetles Monochamus Megerle (Coleoptera Cerambycidae), generally the largest phloemophagous insects in pines. We evaluated patterns of body size and its correlation with other life-history traits. By studying pine sawyer beetles in different areas (Northeast USA, Southeast USA and Portugal) we assessed the interaction with climate. As predicted under the hypothesis of interspecific competition, there were always clear size differences among coexisting species. As predicted if competition is asymmetric, smaller species were less abundant and emerged earlier than the larger species. In the larger and numerically dominant species, sexual size dimorphism was more pronounced and the sex ratio was skewed towards females. In the smaller species, males emerged earlier (protandry), whereas the larger species lacked differences in emergence time or displayed protogyny. Effects of climate only seem to have been expressed in the larger dominant species of each area, whereas the effects of competition in smaller species probably overshadow the effects of climate. Body size impacts nearly all aspects of an animal's life and can be subject to considerable variation in response to differences in climate and resource availability. We studied the impact of temperature and resource availability on arid‐living Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), relative to body size and degree of sexual dimorphism, over three locations differing in annual rainfall and temperature to test Bergmann's rule, the resource rule and Rensch's rule. We found that squirrels were the largest where resources were the highest and temperatures were the lowest but squirrels were similar in mass where resources were medium or low and temperatures medium and highest, partially supporting Bergmann's rule and the resource rule. Hind‐feet were the largest where resources were medium and temperatures were medium and similarly small in low and high resource and high‐ and low‐temperature areas. The degree of sexual dimorphism of hind‐foot and mass was constant no matter the resource abundance or temperature, suggesting no impact of resource availability or temperature on the degree of sexual dimorphism, contradicting Rensch's rule. Our findings suggest that, while resource availability and temperature may have an impact on body size, other mechanisms may be important in limiting both body size and degree of sexual dimorphism in this species. Reproductive mode, ancestry, and climate are hypothesized to determine body size variation in reptiles but their effects have rarely been estimated simultaneously, especially at the intraspecific level. The common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) occupies almost the entire Northern Eurasia and includes viviparous and oviparous lineages, thus representing an excellent model for such studies. Using body length data for >10,000 individuals from 72 geographically distinct populations over the species' range, we analyzed how sex‐specific adult body size and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is associated with reproductive mode, lineage identity, and several climatic variables. Variation in male size was low and poorly explained by our predictors. In contrast, female size and SSD varied considerably, demonstrating significant effects of reproductive mode and particularly seasonality. Populations of the western oviparous lineage (northern Spain, south‐western France) exhibited a smaller female size and less female‐biased SSD than those of the western viviparous (France to Eastern Europe) and the eastern viviparous (Eastern Europe to Far East) lineages; this pattern persisted even after controlling for climatic effects. The phenotypic response to seasonality was complex: across the lineages, as well as within the eastern viviparous lineage, female size and SSD increase with increasing seasonality, whereas the western viviparous lineage followed the opposing trends. Altogether, viviparous populations seem to follow a saw‐tooth geographic cline, which might reflect the nonmonotonic relationship of body size at maturity in females with the length of activity season. This relationship is predicted to arise in perennial ectotherms as a response to environmental constraints caused by seasonality of growth and reproduction. The SSD allometry followed the converse of Rensch's rule, a rare pattern for amniotes. Our results provide the first evidence of opposing body size—climate relationships in intraspecific units. Aim: Major efforts have been devoted to understanding the geographic pattern of sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Rensch's rule posits that SSD increases with body size in male‐biased SSD species and decreases with body size in female‐biased SSD species. This pattern, and its inverse, have been mainly explored at the interspecific level, whereas research at the intraspecific level has been largely neglected. Here, we test whether the allometric pattern of SSD in an urodele amphibian conforms to Rensch's rule and evaluate the relative role of four potential mechanisms: sexual selection, fecundity selection, density‐dependent resource availability and differential plasticity. Location: Iberian Peninsula. Taxon: Lissotriton boscai (Amphibia: Caudata: Salamandridae). Methods: We used original (field‐based) and published data on body size, courtship behaviour and fecundity parameters and a suite of climatic, ecological and genetic (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) predictors to assess these hypotheses. Results: The results showed that SSD increased with increasing female mean body size, supporting the inverse Rensch's rule pattern. Primary productivity‐related variables and female density were among the most relevant ecological predictors of SSD after accounting for genetic structure and capture date. Main conclusions: This study reveals that the interplay between the density‐dependent resource availability hypothesis and the differential plasticity hypothesis explains the inverse Rensch's rule. We discuss how combining biogeographical and experimental approaches can provide alternative interpretations to the classical sexual and fecundity selection hypotheses on the interpopulation variation in SSD. Sexual‐size dimorphism (SSD) is ubiquitous across animals and often biased in the direction of larger females in snakes and other ectothermic organisms. To understand how SSD evolves across species, Rensch's rule predicts that in taxa where males are larger, SSD increases with body size. In contrast, where females are larger, SSD decreases with body size. While this rule holds for many taxa, it may be ambiguous for others, particularly ectothermic vertebrates. Importantly, this rule suggests that the outcomes of SSD over phylogenetic time scales depend on the direction of dimorphism predicated on the difference in reproductive efforts between males and females. Here, we examine SSD in the context of Rensch's rule in Thamnophiini, the gartersnakes and watersnakes, a prominent group that in many areas comprises the majority of the North American snake biota. Using a dated phylogeny, measurements of gape, body, and tail size, we show that these snakes do not follow Rensch's rule, but rather female‐biased SSD increases with body size. We in turn find that this allometry is most pronounced with gape and is correlated with both neonate and litter size, suggesting that acquiring prey of increased size may be directly related to fecundity selection. These changes in SSD are not constrained to any particular clade; we find no evidence of phylogenetic shifts in those traits showing SSD. Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is a result of selective pressures acting differently on size in each sex. SSD is examined in salamanders by analysing data from 356 species representative of all major lineages to identify which sex is more frequently larger and test the validity of the Rensch's Rule. Most species of salamanders exhibit a female-biased SSD (66.9% of species analysed). The overall mean SSD index was 0.061, indicating that sex-linked differences in SVL were not large. Standard major axis regression using species data and phylogenetically independent contrasts indicated a general lack of fit of Rensch's Rule to the allometric patterns found for the whole data set and the analysis restricted to major families. Fecundity selection is more influential on female SSD than sexual selection associated with inter-male competition for mating partners. However, this selective pressure could be less forceful in females to produce a departure from isometry of biometric relationships between sex-linked sizes, thus leading to the rejection of Rensch's Rule. Eusocial insects offer a unique opportunity to analyze the evolution of body size differences between sexes in relation to social environment. The workers, being sterile females, are not subject to selection for reproductive function providing a natural control for parsing the effects of selection on reproductive function (i.e., sexual and fecundity selection) from other kinds of natural selection. Patterns of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and testing of Rensch's rule controlling for phylogenetic effects were analyzed in the Meliponini or stingless bees. Theory predicts that queens may exhibit higher selection for fecundity in eusocial taxa, but contrary to this, we found mixed patterns of SSD in Meliponini. Non‐Melipona species generally have a female‐biased SSD, while all analyzed species of Melipona showed a male‐biased SSD, indicating that the direction and magnitude of the selective pressures do not operate in the same way for all members of this taxon. The phylogenetic regressions revealed that the rate of divergence has not differed between the two castes of females and the males, that is, stingless bees do not seem to follow Rensch's rule (a slope >1), adding this highly eusocial taxon to the various solitary insect taxa not conforming with it. Noteworthy, when Melipona was removed from the analysis, the phylogenetic regressions for the thorax width of males on queens had a slope significantly smaller than 1, suggesting that the evolutionary divergence has been larger in queens than males, and could be explained by stronger selection on female fecundity only in non‐Melipona species. Our results in the stingless bees question the classical explanation of female‐biased SSD via fecundity and provide a first evidence of a more complex determination of SSD in highly eusocial species. We suggest that in highly eusocial taxa, additional selection mechanisms, possibly related to individual and colonial interests, could influence the evolution of environmentally determined traits such as body size. We performed an ancestral character reconstruction of the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and controlling by phylogenetic effects, and we explored the allometric relationships among queens, males, and workers in stingless bees. Our results confirmed the existence of two opposite patterns of SSD, Melipona show a male‐biased SSD, and non‐Melipona species generally have a female‐biased SSD, which suggest that the direction and magnitude of the selective pressures do not operate in the same way for all members of this taxon. Proximal causes to explain the two observed patterns of SSD in stingless bees could be related to fecundity selection, sexual selection, and the relative length of development of queens in Melipona and non‐Melipona species, possibly reflecting an interplay between self‐interest and colonial interest which requires further analysis in this and other highly eusocial taxa. In living organisms with sexual reproduction, the presence of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is common. The main explanations for this phenomenon are based on sexual selection or the fecundity advantage hypothesis (natural selection). Here, we tested Rensch's rule in species of the viviparous lizard genus Phymaturus ; additionally, we tested if there is a pattern of sexual size dimorphism or if it depends upon other morphological traits. We found no evidence for Rensch's rule in these lizards. After testing for multiple or single regime evolutionary models, we found that body size most likely evolved under multi-regime Ornstein-Uhlenbeck evolutionary model; the same was observed for abdomen width in females, a fecundity advantage hypothesis trait. For species with female biased SSD there is a positive relationship between snout-vent length and width of the belly, supporting the fecundity advantage hypothesis. Additionally, the relationship between brood size and brood mass with body size and body mass (respectively) were positive giving strength to the fecundity advantage hypothesis. Finally, our results show males did not show a clear pattern in relation to the sexual selection hypothesis, probably because sexual selection is a complex aspect that involves behavior and color. On the other hand, female body size and reproductive output are related to mean seasonal air temperature and its combination with mean annual air temperature in an evolutionary fashion framework, such as fecundity advantage hypothesis in these lizards. Abstract The aims of this study were to determine whether sexual size dimorphism in fleas and gamasid mites (i) conforms to Rensch's rule (allometry of sexual size dimorphism) and (ii) covaries with sex ratio in infrapopulations (conspecific parasites harboured by an individual host), xenopopulations (conspecific parasites harboured by a population of a given host species in a locality) and suprapopulations (conspecific parasites harboured by an entire host community in a locality). Rensch's rule in sexual size dimorphism was tested across 150 flea and 55 mite species, whereas covariation between sexual size dimorphism and sex ratio was studied using data on ectoparasites collected from small mammalian hosts in Slovakia and western Siberia. For fleas, we controlled for the confounding effect of phylogeny. The slope of the linear regression of female size on male size was significantly smaller than 1 in fleas, but did not differ from 1 in mites. The proportion of males in flea infrapopulations significantly increased with an increase in the female-to-male body size ratio. The same was true for obligatory haematophagous mites. No relationship between sex ratio and sexual size dimorphism was found for xenopopulations of either taxon or for mite suprapopulations. However, when controlling for the confounding effect of phylogeny, a significant negative correlation between sex ratio and sexual size dimorphism was revealed for flea suprapopulations. We conclude that (i) some macroecological patterns differ between ectoparasite taxa exploiting the same hosts (allometry in sexual size dimorphism), whereas other patterns are similar (sexual size dimorphism-sex ratio relationship in infrapopulations), and (ii) some patterns are scale-dependent and may demonstrate the opposite trends in parasite populations at different hierarchical levels. Support for macroecological rules in insects is mixed, with potential confounding interrelations between patterns rarely studied. We here investigate global patterns in body and wing size, sexual size dimorphism and range size in common fruit flies (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and explore potential interrelations and the predictive power of Allen's, Bergmann's, Rensch's and Rapoport's rules. We found that thorax length (r2 = 0.05) and wing size (r2 = 0.09) increased with latitude, supporting Bergmann's rule. Contrary to patterns often found in endothermic vertebrates, relative wing size increased towards the poles (r2 = 0.12), a pattern against Allen's rule, which we attribute to selection for increased flight capacity in the cold. Sexual size dimorphism decreased with size, evincing Rensch's rule across the family (r2 = 0.14). Yet, this pattern was largely driven by the virilis–repleta radiation. Finally, range size did not correlate with latitude, although a positive relationship was present in a subset of the species investigated, providing no convincing evidence for Rapoport's rule. We further found little support for confounding interrelations between body size, wing loading and range size in this taxon. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that studying several traits simultaneously at minimum permits better interpretation in case of multiple, potentially conflicting trends or hypotheses concerning the macroecology of insects. Abstract: Alpine species with a limited distribution can act as sentinels of climate change, but first we have to identify their climate‐sensitive traits. Here, we adopted a multi‐level approach to define the influence of climate on the geographical distribution and body size of a steno‐endemic Alpine grasshopper, the Stenobothrus ursulae Nadig, 1986. We built a species distribution model (SDM) with the following climatic predictors: precipitation seasonality, precipitation of the wettest month, mean temperature of the driest quarter and isothermality. The model provides a satisfactory representation of the species geographical range, but it also identifies areas suitable in terms of climate in which the species was not found. Therefore, we suggest that climatic and geographic barriers combined with a poor dispersal ability might have limited its distribution. We measured 309 individuals collected across the whole geographical range. Our results show that increasing elevation was linked both to a decline in S. ursulae body length (converse Bergmann's rule) and to a decline in sexual size dimorphism (converse Rensch's rule). We demonstrate also that the same climatic predictors that describe the species distribution affect its morphological variation. Our results suggest that climate affects this species distribution and body size with opposite effects: suitable climatic conditions are found at high elevations, and the fitness‐related trait (i.e. body size) declines with elevations. In the future, distribution and/or morphology of the species might change in order to successfully cope with the changing climate, but its very limited dispersal ability constitutes an issue of concern. Abstract: Sexual dimorphism is prevalent in most living organisms. The difference in size between sexes of a given species is generally known as sexual size dimorphism (SSD). The magnitude of the SSD is determined by Rensch's rule where size dimorphism increases with increasing body size when the male is the larger sex and decreases with increasing average body size when the female is the larger sex. The unique underground environment that zokors (Eospalax baileyi) live under in the severe habitat of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (QTP) could create SSD selection pressures that may or may not be supported by Rensch's rule, making this scientific question worthy of investigation. In this study, we investigated the individual variation between sexes in body size and SSD of plateau zokors using measurements of 19 morphological traits. We also investigated the evolutionary mechanisms underlying SSD in plateau zokors. Moreover, we applied Rensch's rule to all extant zokor species. Our results showed male‐biased SSD in plateau zokors: The body‐ and head‐related measurements were greater in males than in females. Linear regression analysis between body length, body weight, and carcass weight showed significant relationships with some traits such as skull length, lower incisor length, and tympanic bulla width, which might support our prediction that males have faster growth rates than females. Further, the SSD pattern corroborated the assumption of Rensch's rule in plateau zokors but not in the other zokor species. Our findings suggest that the natural underground habitat and behavioral differences between sexes can generate selection pressures on male traits and contribute to the evolution of SSD in plateau zokors. Sexual selection is considered the major cause of sexual dimorphism, but recent observations suggest that natural selection may play a more important role in the evolution of sex differentiation than previously recognized. Therefore, studying the trade-offs between natural selection and sexual selection is crucial to a better understanding of the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis, a fish inhabiting lakes and rivers around the Mediterranean Sea, displays strong sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and behavior (i.e., larger body and head size for males and higher swimming requirements for females during the reproductive period). We tested for differences in sexual dimorphism in size and shape between the populations from lake and river habitats with the goal of identifying the trade-offs between natural and sexual selection that underlie variations in sexual dimorphism in this species. Our results show i) differences in sexual size dimorphism (SSizeD) in accordance to Rensch's rule (i.e., larger individuals in rivers associated with higher SSizeD), and ii) a decrease in shape differentiation between males and females in lake populations. Together, this suggests that the different environmental conditions between lake and river habitats (e.g., resource limitations, predation pressure, water velocity) affect the relative importance of sexual selection in the display of sexual dimorphism within the species. Eye size is interesting in snakes because in most species body length differs between the sexes, while the eye's performance depends on its absolute size. So, does the smaller sex see less well? We hypothesized that eye sexual mensural dimorphism (SMD) would be smaller than Body SMD. We found among 26 snake populations that body length SMD was female biased in 47.6% and male biased in 38.1% of samples. Often the larger sex's head was further enlarged but the SMD of absolute eye size was mitigated or annulled by the smaller sex's eye being enlarged within the head, and the head enlarged relative to the body. Overall generally the SMD of eye size was smaller than body SMD. This accords with a hypothesis that eye size affects the evolution of head size and its SMD, both reflecting and emphasizing that absolute eye size is functionally important. Although Colubridae exceed Viperidae in length, Viperidae have larger eyes in absolute terms. In Colubridae the females have larger eyes and in Viperidae the males have larger eyes. Additionally we examine to what extent SMD in different characters is correlated, and briefly review other aspects of SMD, including some aspects of Rensch's rule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is widespread among animals, with larger females usually attributed to an optimization of resources in reproduction and larger males to sexual selection. A general pattern in the evolution of SSD is Rensch’s rule, which states that SSD increases with body size in species with larger males but decreases when females are larger. We studied the evolution of SSD in the genus Limnebius (Coleoptera, Hydraenidae), measuring SSD and male genital size and complexity of ca. 80% of its 150 species and reconstructing its evolution in a molecular phylogeny with 71 species. We found strong support for a higher evolutionary lability of male body size, which had an overall positive allometry with respect to females and higher evolutionary rates measured over the individual branches of the phylogeny. Increases in SSD were associated to increases in body size, but there were some exceptions with an increase associated to changes in only one sex. Secondary sexual characters (SSC) in the external morphology of males appeared several times independently, generally on species that had already increased their size. There was an overall significant correlation between SSD, male body size and male genital size and complexity, although some lineages with complex genitalia had low SSD, and some small species with complex genitalia had no SSD. Our results suggest that the origin of the higher evolutionary variance of male body size may be due to lack of constraints rather than to sexual selection, that may start to act in species with already larger males due to random variation.

Male and female animals often exhibit differences in body size; this difference is known as sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Hummingbirds are an excellent model system to test functional hypotheses of SSD because they exhibit a wide range of body sizes and reproductive behaviour between the sexes. Here, using phylogenetic comparative methods, we tested whether mating system, male territoriality and agility predicted the evolution of SSD in this avian family. Our results first suggest that evolutionary increases in male-biased SSD are related to increases in lekking behaviour. Second, we found that male agility is positively related to increases in male biased-SSD albeit this is only likely to occur in males of territorial species. Many animal species exhibit size dimorphism between sexes. Sexual selection, whereby male-male competition favors larger body sizes, has been considered a likely cause of sexual size dimorphism. Habitat features in breeding areas could affect the outcome of male-male competition, yet few attempts have been made to relate breeding habitat features with interpopulation variation in sexual size dimorphism. In this study, we examined interpopulation variation in sexual size dimorphism by studying the landlocked amago salmon ( Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae) at a microgeographic scale. We found that female body size was independent of stream size but that male body size decreased with smaller stream sizes. A likely explanation is that the relationship between reproductive success and the size of males is influenced by the availability of refuges that are only available to small-bodied males. Sexual differences in body size increased with decreasing stream sizes, supporting the hypothesis that the reproductive success of larger males is reduced in smaller streams. In contrast, the maturation-length threshold increased with stream size for both sexes. The stream-size-based interpopulation variation in sexual size dimorphism and size at maturity in landlocked amago salmon may therefore have arisen through a combination of sexual and natural selection. While an understanding of evolutionary processes in shifting environments is vital in the context of rapid ecological change, one of the most potent selective forces, sexual selection, remains curiously unexplored. Variation in sexual selection across a species range, especially across a gradient of temperature regimes, has the potential to provide a window into the possible impacts of climate change on the evolution of mating patterns. Here, we investigated some of the links between temperature and indicators of sexual selection, using a cold-water pipefish as model. We found that populations differed with respect to body size, length of the breeding season, fecundity, and sexual dimorphism across a wide latitudinal gradient. We encountered two types of latitudinal patterns, either linear, when related to body size, or parabolic in shape when considering variables related to sexual selection intensity, such as sexual dimorphism and reproductive investment. Our results suggest that sexual selection intensity increases toward both edges of the distribution and that the large differences in temperature likely play a significant role. Shorter breeding seasons in the north and reduced periods for gamete production in the south certainly have the potential to alter mating systems, breeding synchrony, and mate monopolization rates. As latitude and water temperature are tightly coupled across the European coasts, the observed patterns in traits related to sexual selection can lead to predictions regarding how sexual selection should change in response to climate change. Based on data from extant populations, we can predict that as the worm pipefish moves northward, a wave of decreasing selection intensity will likely replace the strong sexual selection at the northern range margin. Sexual size dimorphism ( SSD) is widespread and variable in nature. Although female-biased SSD predominates among insects, the proximate ecological and evolutionary factors promoting this phenomenon remain largely unstudied. Here, we employ modern phylogenetic comparative methods on eight subfamilies of Iberian grasshoppers (85 species) to examine the validity of different models of evolution of body size and SSD and explore how they are shaped by a suite of ecological variables (habitat specialization, substrate use, altitude) and/or constrained by different evolutionary pressures (female fecundity, strength of sexual selection, length of the breeding season). Body size disparity primarily accumulated late in the history of the group and did not follow a Brownian motion pattern, indicating the existence of directional evolution for this trait. We found support for the converse of Rensch's rule (i.e. females are proportionally bigger than males in large species) across all taxa but not within the two most speciose subfamilies (Gomphocerinae and Oedipodinae), which showed an isometric pattern. Our results do not provide support for the fecundity or sexual selection hypotheses, and we did not find evidence for significant effects of habitat use. Contrary to that expected, we found that species with narrower reproductive window are less dimorphic in size than those that exhibit a longer breeding cycle, suggesting that male protandry cannot solely account for the evolution of female-biased SSD in Orthoptera. Sexual size dimorphism ( SSD) evolves because body size is usually related to reproductive success through different pathways in females and males. Female body size is strongly correlated with fecundity, while in males, body size is correlated with mating success. In many lizard species, males are larger than females, whereas in others, females are the larger sex, suggesting that selection on fecundity has been stronger than sexual selection on males. As placental development or egg retention requires more space within the abdominal cavity, it has been suggested that females of viviparous lizards have larger abdomens or body size than their oviparous relatives. Thus, it would be expected that females of viviparous species attain larger sizes than their oviparous relatives, generating more biased patterns of SSD. We test these predictions using lizards of the genus Sceloporus. After controlling for phylogenetic effects, our results confirm a strong relationship between female body size and fecundity, suggesting that selection for higher fecundity has had a main role in the evolution of female body size. However, oviparous and viviparous females exhibit similar sizes and allometric relationships. Even though there is a strong effect of body size on female fecundity, once phylogenetic effects are considered, we find that the slope of male on female body size is significantly larger than one, providing evidence of greater evolutionary divergence of male body size. Background The macroevolutionary pattern of Rensch’s Rule (positive allometry of sexual size dimorphism) has had mixed support in turtles. Using the largest carapace length dataset and only large-scale body mass dataset assembled for this group, we determine (a) whether turtles conform to Rensch’s Rule at the order, suborder, and family levels, and (b) whether inferences regarding allometry of sexual size dimorphism differ based on choice of body size metric used for analyses. Methods We compiled databases of mean body mass and carapace length for males and females for as many populations and species of turtles as possible. We then determined scaling relationships between males and females for average body mass and straight carapace length using traditional and phylogenetic comparative methods. We also used regression analyses to evalutate sex-specific differences in the variance explained by carapace length on body mass. Results Using traditional (non-phylogenetic) analyses, body mass supports Rensch’s Rule, whereas straight carapace length supports isometry. Using phylogenetic independent contrasts, both body mass and straight carapace length support Rensch’s Rule with strong congruence between metrics. At the family level, support for Rensch’s Rule is more frequent when mass is used and in phylogenetic comparative analyses. Turtles do not differ in slopes of sex-specific mass-to-length regressions and more variance in body size within each sex is explained by mass than by carapace length. Discussion Turtles display Rensch’s Rule overall and within families of Cryptodires, but not within Pleurodire families. Mass and length are strongly congruent with respect to Rensch’s Rule across turtles, and discrepancies are observed mostly at the family level (the level where Rensch’s Rule is most often evaluated). At macroevolutionary scales, the purported advantages of length measurements over weight are not supported in turtles.
