ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to assess the risk factors associated with thrombotic events in obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome (OAPS) patients and to develop a predictive model specifically tailored to predict the risk of postpartum thrombosis in OAPS patients without prior thrombotic events. This research seeks to enhance clinician’s awareness regarding the postpartum care and monitoring of OAPS patients.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of the Fourth Military Medical University including 269 consecutive inpatients diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) from July 1, 2008 to July 31, 2022. All participants met the 2006 Sydney APS classification criteria or the “non-criteria OAPS classification”. Out of 98 candidate clinical and laboratory parameters considered, 40 potential variables were selected for analysis based on expert opinion. The logistic regression mode with the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) were used to identify optimal predictive characteristics. All samples were included in the model building and a nomogram was generated based on these characteristics. The differentiation, calibration, and clinical utility of the predictive model were evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis. The model was also validated by a 1000 bootstrap tests.Results126 patients with OAPS were enrolled, and a total of 89 OAPS patients who had never experienced thrombosis were retrospectively analyzed. After 3 years follow-up, 32.58% of the patients (29/89) developed thrombosis. In order to create, LASSO logistic regression identified three optimal variables: the platelet count less than 125×109/L, more than one positive aPLs (antiphospholipid antibody), and the use of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or low dose aspirin (LDA) after delivery. A predictive model was conducted using these three predictive indicators for patients with OAPS who experience thrombosis for the first-time. This prediction model has good distinction, good calibration, and fair clinical practicality.ConclusionOur model has good predictive ability in assessing the risk of thrombosis in patients with OAPS without prior thrombotic events. This model is easy to predict, has good discriminability and calibration, and can be utilized as a routine tool for thrombus screening in OAPS patients.

Objectives: Angiogenic T cells (Tang) are crucial in promoting angiogenesis, with the loss of CD28 serving as a marker for highly differentiated and senescent T cells. This study aims to investigate the characteristics and potential roles of CD8+CD28null Tang in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). Methods: A cohort of AAV patients and matched healthy controls (HCs) were analyzed. Flow cytometry was used to assess the profiles of circulating CD8+CD28null Tang. In vitro functional assays were performed to evaluate the pathogenic properties of CD8+CD28null Tang. Results: CD8+CD28null Tang levels were significantly higher in the peripheral blood of AAV patients compared to HCs, and their levels were further increased in AAV patients with MPO⁺, p-ANCA⁺, or interstitial lung disease compared to their respective control groups. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between both the percentage and absolute count of CD8+CD28null Tang and the Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS). In patients with a good treatment response, both the percentage and absolute count of CD8+CD28null Tang were significantly reduced, and this reduction was positively correlated with the decrease in BVAS scores. In vitro studies revealed that CD8+CD28null Tang displayed enhanced chemotactic properties, induced apoptosis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and inhibited their proliferation, migration, and tube formation. Conclusions: AAV patients exhibit increased levels of circulating CD8+CD28null Tang, which can be reduced following effective treatment. Furthermore, CD8+CD28null Tang may contribute to the pathogenesis of AAV by promoting apoptosis and inhibiting the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of HUVECs.

Introduction: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a large number of critically ill and severe COVID-19 patients meet the diagnostic criteria for sepsis and even septic shock. The treatments for COVID-19 patients with sepsis are still very limited. For sepsis, improving ventilation is one of the main treatments. Nitric oxide (NO) and almitrine have been reported to improve oxygenation in patients with “classical” sepsis. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NO, almitrine, and the combination of both for COVID-19 (at the edge of sepsis) patients.Method: A systematic search was performed on Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, Wanfang Data, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. Randomized clinical trials, cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, case series, and case reports in COVID-19 patients with suspected or confirmed sepsis were performed. Study characteristics, patient demographics, interventions, and outcomes were extracted from eligible articles.Results: A total of 35 studies representing 1,701 patients met eligibility criteria. Inhaled NO did not affect the mortality (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.33–2.8, I2 = 81%, very low certainty), hospital length of stay (SMD 0.62, 95% CI 0.04–1.17, I2 = 83%, very low certainty), and intubation needs (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.34–1.93, I2 = 56%, very low certainty) of patients with COVID-19 (at the edge of sepsis). Meanwhile, almitrine did not affect the mortality (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.17–1.13, low certainty), hospital length of stay (SMD 0.00, 95% CI -0.29–0.29, low certainty), intubation needs (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.5–1.79, low certainty), and SAEs (OR 1.16, 95% CI 0.63–2.15, low certainty). Compared with pre-administration, the PaO2/FiO2 of patients with NO (SMD-0.87, 95% CI -1.08–0.66, I2 = 0%, very low certainty), almitrine (SMD-0.73, 95% CI-1.06–0.4, I2 = 1%, very low certainty), and the combination of both (SMD-0.94, 95% CI-1.71–0.16, I2 = 47%, very low certainty) increased significantly.Conclusion: Inhaled NO, almitrine, and the combination of the two drugs improved oxygenation significantly, but did not affect the patients’ mortality, hospitalization duration, and intubation needs. Almitrine did not significantly increase the patients’ SAEs. Depression has long been considered a disease involving immune hyperactivation. The impact of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 on depression has been widely studied. However, the effect of IL-33, another pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been less researched. Currently, research on the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk is inconsistent. In response to these divergent results, we conducted a review and meta-analysis aimed at resolving published research on the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk, and understanding the potential role of IL-33 in the development and treatment of depression. After searching different databases, we analyzed 8 studies. Our meta-analysis showed that IL-33 had a positive correlation with reduced risk of depression. The pooled standard mean differences (SMD) = 0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05–0.24. Subgroup analysis results showed that IL-33 and ST2 levels in cerebrospinal fluid and serum is positive correlated with reduced risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). According to the characteristics of the included literature, the results mainly focuses on Caucasian. Furthermore, according to the subgroup analysis of depression-related data sources for disease or treatment, the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk is reflected throughout the entire process of depression development and treatment. Therefore, the change of IL-33 level in serum and cerebrospinal fluid can serve as useful indicators for assessing the risk of depression, and the biomarker provides potential treatment strategies for reducing the burden of the disease.

Both the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE)/GRACE Follow-On (GFO) provide effective tools to infer surface mass changes. In this paper, we combined GPS, GRACE/GFO spherical harmonic (SH) solutions and GRACE/GFO mascon solutions to analyze the total surface mass changes and terrestrial water storage (TWS) changes in the Shaan-Gan-Ning Region (SGNR) over the period from December 2010 to February 2021. To improve the reliability of GPS inversion results, an improved regularization Laplace matrix and monthly optimal regularization parameter estimation strategy were employed to solve the ill-posed problem. The results show that the improved Laplace matrix can suppress the edge effects better than that of the traditional Laplace matrix, and the correlation coefficient and standard deviation (STD) between the original signal and inversion results from the traditional and improved Laplace matrix are 0.84 and 0.88, and 17.49 mm and 15.16 mm, respectively. The spatial distributions of annual amplitudes and time series changes for total surface mass changes derived from GPS agree well with GRACE/GFO SH solutions and mascon solutions, and the correlation coefficients of total surface mass change time series between GPS and GRACE/GFO SH solutions, GPS and GRACE/GFO mascon solutions are 0.80 and 0.77. However, the obvious differences still exist in local regions. In addition, the seasonal characteristics, increasing and decreasing rate of TWS change time series derived from GPS, GRACE/GFO SH and mascon solutions agree well with the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) hydrological model in the studied area, and generally consistent with the precipitation data. Meanwhile, TWS changes derived from GPS and GRACE mascon solutions in the SGNR are more reliable than those of GRACE SH solutions over the period from January 2016 to June 2017 (the final operation phase of the GRACE mission).

The IL-33/ST2 axis is reported to be controversially associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). A systematic review of the association between the IL-33/ST2 axis and CAD revealed that IL-33/ST2 plays a protective role in CAD and serum sST2 and IL-33 levels are increased in patients with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the association of IL-33/ST2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with CAD prevalence, prognosis, and risk factors was assessed by performing a meta-analysis. Through a literature search of relevant articles in various databases using the relevant keywords, seven studies were included in the analysis. The meta-analysis showed that the IL-33/ST2 axis was associated with increased CAD risk [pooled odds ratio (OR) = 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13–1.20]. Gene subgroup analysis showed a close association of IL1RL1 (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.20–1.30; I2 = 85.9%; p = 0.000) and IL1RAcP (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.26–1.60; I2 = 27.1%; p = 0.203) with increased CAD risk. However, the association for the IL-33 gene was not statistically significant. SNPs rs7044343 (T), rs10435816 (G), rs11792633 (C) in IL-33 gene were associated with a protective effect in CAD. However, rs7025417 (T) in IL-33, rs11685424 (G) in IL1RL1, rs950880 (A) in sST2, and rs4624606 (A) in IL1RAcP were related to increased CAD risk. Overall, polymorphisms in IL-33/ST2 axis components were associated with increased CAD risk. These results may help identify key features of IL-33/ST2 immunobiology in CAD along with potential treatment strategies to lower disease burden.

Study region: North China Plain (NCP), China. Study focus: This paper investigates the spatiotemporal characteristics of groundwater storage (GWS) changes in the NCP during 2003–2020 using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements with a focus on the subperiods separated by the implementation (December 2014) of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project (MRP). New hydrological insights for the region: GRACE-derived results demonstrate that GWS depleted at rates of − 1.66 ± 0.17 cm/yr and − 2.76 ± 0.55 cm/yr for subperiods of 2003–2014 and 2015–2020, respectively, suggesting that GWS continued decreasing after the MRP. However, the spatial distribution of average monthly GWS shows an evident southwest-northeast band distribution, and the GWS depletion in the northwest has been alleviated compared with the southeast. The GNSS stations in the Beijing area show accelerated increasing rates of vertical displacements, while those in the plain areas of Hebei and Tianjin show continuous declining rates, implying that GWS in the Beijing area recovered faster after the MRP, while the GWS depletion in plain areas of Hebei and Tianjin continued. In addition, precipitation is the main driving factor to GWS variability during the whole study period, with grey correlation coefficients of 0.66–0.75. This strong correlation explains the significant reduction in GWS caused by the large precipitation deficit in 2019, which leads to a larger GWS depletion rate for the 2015–2020 period.

Abstract Investigation of the slopes in the Wenchuan earthquake shows that tension failures appear in the upper part in many landslides. The typical failure mode can be generalized as “tensile-rupture and sheared-sliding” (TRSS). In this paper, the distinct element method (DEM) is employed to simulate the gradual failure process of the Tangjiashan landslide under the excitation of the Wenchuan earthquake. It is found that the first failure is the appearance of deep tension cracks on the top, and then shearing slip along the bottom. The posterior fracture is deep, steep, and rough, and the bottom shear slip surface has a relatively gently dip. The simulation shows the failure mode of TRSS in the slope can be well reproduced, and the geological and mechanical mechanisms can be revealed in the DEM model.

Objective. The purpose of the study is to explore the effect of K5BW12O40, a polyoxometalate (POM), on the apoptosis of A549 cells and its underlying mechanism and to analyze the potential therapeutic effect of K5BW12O40 in non-small-cell lung cancer. Materials and Methods. A549 cells were treated with different concentrations of K5BW12O40 (0 mg/ml, 0.001 mg/ml, 0.01 mg/ml, and 0.1 mg/ml). The proliferation of A549 cells treated with different concentrations of K5BW12O40 was detected by MTT assay (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2 and 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide). The apoptosis of A549 cells induced by K5BW12O40 was detected by flow cytometry. Western blot was used to detect the changes in Bax and caspase-3 protein levels in A549 cells induced by K5BW12O40. Results. As the dose of the K5BW12O40 increases, the cell viability of A549 cells gradually decreases. The results of flow cytometry showed that the apoptotic rate of A549 cells increased with the increase of K5BW12O40 concentration. Western blot results showed that the expression of the apoptosis marker protein caspase-3 was increased in the three groups treated with K5BW12O40 whereas the protein level of Bax did not change significantly in A549 cells treated with K5BW12O40. Conclusions. K5BW12O40 increases the apoptotic rate of A549 cells by upregulating caspase-3.

Abstract The Chinese BeiDou Navigation Satellite System has shown potential for precise positioning with a comparable accuracy to that of the Global Positioning System (GPS) at the centimeter level for the horizontal component and the sub-centimeter level for the vertical component. However, a longer convergence time limits the performance of BeiDou precise point positioning (PPP) compared to the GPS PPP solutions. In this study, we applied the tropospheric delay information, derived from the European Centre of Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analysis and prediction data, into the simulated real-time BeiDou-only and BeiDou/GPS PPP to augment the solutions. Observations from stations in Southeast Asia, which are capable of tracking the BeiDou constellation from the International GNSS Service (IGS) Multi-GNSS Experiment and Pilot Project (MGEX) network, are processed with different strategies: the standard PPP and the introduced ECMWF-augmented PPP with analysis and prediction data, respectively. The positioning results demonstrate that the ECMWF-augmented BeiDou-only and BeiDou/GPS PPP methods using prediction data perform as well as those using analysis data. In the case of BeiDou-only PPP scenarios, remarkable advancements of 80.6% for the convergence time are achieved by two ECMWF-augmented PPP solutions with respect to the standard PPP method. For the positioning accuracy, the two proposed augmented PPP methods attain 6.6 cm in three-dimensional (3D) accuracy when the standard PPP solution get converged (10 cm), representing a remarkable improvement of 34%. As for the north/east/up component, improvements of 14.7 and 8% for positioning accuracy are obtained for the north and east components, respectively, while a remarkable improvement of 37.3% is achieved for the vertical component. In terms of the BeiDou/GPS PPP solutions, the ECMWF-augmented PPP scenarios attain over 10% improvements in 3D accuracy in all processing session lengths. These improvements totally come from the vertical component, whereas almost no enhancements are obtained in two horizontal components.

Mass redistribution of the Earth causes variable loading that deforms the solid Earth. While most recent studies using geodetic techniques focus on regions (such as the Amazon basin and the Nepal Himalayas) with large seasonal deformation amplitudes on the order of 1–4 cm due to hydrologic loading, few such studies have been conducted on the regions where the seasonal deformation amplitude is half as large. Here, we use joint GPS and GRACE data to investigate the vertical deformation due to hydrologic loading in the North China Plain, where significant groundwater depletion has been reported. We found that the GPS- and GRACE-derived secular trends and seasonal signals are in good agreement, with an uplift magnitude of 1–2 mm/year and a correlation of 85.0%–98.5%, respectively. This uplift rate is consistent with groundwater depletion rate estimated from GRACE data and in-situ groundwater measurements from earlier report studies; whereas the seasonal hydrologic variation reflects human behavior of groundwater pumping for agriculture irrigation in spring, leading to less water storage in summer than that in the winter season. However, less than 20% of weighted root-mean-squared (WRMS) reductions were detected for all the selected GPS stations when GRACE-derived seasonal deformations were removed from detrended GPS height time series. This discrepancy is probably because the GRACE-derived seasonal signals are large-scale, while the GPS-derived signals are local point measurements.

The North China Plain (NCP) has been experiencing the most severe groundwater depletion in China, leading to a broad region of vertical motions of the Earth’s surface. This paper explores the seasonal and linear trend variations of surface vertical displacements caused by the groundwater changes in NCP from 2009 to 2013 using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) techniques. Results show that the peak-to-peak amplitude of GPS-derived annual variation is about 3.7~6.0 mm and is highly correlated (R > 0.6 for most selected GPS stations) with results from GRACE, which would confirm that the vertical displacements of continuous GPS (CGPS) stations are mainly caused by groundwater storage (GWS) changes in NCP, since GWS is the dominant component of total water storage (TWS) anomalies in this area. The linear trends of selected bedrock-located IGS CGPS stations reveal the distinct GWS changes in period of 2009–2010 (decrease) and 2011–2013 (rebound), which are consistent with results from GRACE-derived GWS anomalies and in situ GWS observations. This result implies that the rate of groundwater depletion in NCP has slowed in recent years. The impacts of geological condition (bedrock or sediment) of CGPS stations to their results are also investigated in this study. Contrasted with the slight linear rates (−0.69~1.5 mm/a) of bedrock-located CGPS stations, the linear rates of sediment-located CGPS stations are between −44 mm/a and −17 mm/a. It is due to the opposite vertical displacements induced by the Earth surface’s porous and elastic response to groundwater depletion. Besides, the distinct renewal characteristics of shallow and deep groundwater in NCP are discussed. The GPS-based vertical displacement time series, to some extent, can reflect the quicker recovery of shallow unconfined groundwater than the deep confined groundwater in NCP; through one month earlier to attain the maximum height for CGPS stations nearby shallow groundwater depression cones than those nearby deep groundwater depression cones.

A metal-tolerant bacterium strain was isolated from the acidic groundwater of red earth region, located in the Jiangxi province of China. Polyphasic analysis, including a 16S rDNA phylogenetic tree as well as morphological and physicochemical properties, revealed that the isolate was a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, which was recognized as Klebsiella sp. (named H1). Strain H1 had extreme acidity tolerance (pH 2.5) and showed tolerance to heavy metals such as aluminum (Al), iron (Fe) and copper (Cu). It could grow alone in 4 mmol/L Al3+,6 mmol/L Fe3+ and 5 mmol/L Cu2+ at pH 4.0. Strain H1 has the strongest ability to remove aluminum ions (remove Al3+ up to 74.4%), followed by iron ions (remove Fe3+ up to 58.8%), and the relatively weakest ability to remove copper ions (remove Cu2+ up to 48.2%). This is the first discovery that this bacterial species can synergistically resist Al/Fe/Cu toxicity. Although it had a greater impact on ions removal under compound stress, the overall removal effect was better, especially under low concentration treatment. Therefore, Strain H1 can potentially be used as an agent for the bioremediation of metal ions toxicity in acidic soil and groundwater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
