Abstract Seed size, a key determinant of rice yield, is regulated by brassinosteroid (BR); however, the BR pathway in rice has not been fully elucidated. Here, we report the cloning and characterization of the quantitative trait locus Rice Big Grain 1 (qRBG1) from single-segment substitution line Z499. Our data show that qRBG1 Z is an unselected rare promoter variation that reduces qRBG1 expression to increase cell number and size, resulting in larger grains, whereas qRBG1 overexpression causes smaller grains in recipient Nipponbare. We demonstrate that qRBG1 encodes a non-canonical BES1 (Bri1-EMS-Suppressor1)/BZR1(Brassinazole-Resistant1) family member, OsBZR5, that regulates grain size upon phosphorylation by OsGSK2 (GSK3-like Kinase2) and binding to D2 (DWARF2) and OFP1 (Ovate-Family-Protein1) promoters. qRBG1 interacts with OsBZR1 to synergistically repress D2, and to antagonistically mediate OFP1 for grain size. Our results reveal a regulatory network controlling grain size via OsGSK2–qRBG1–OsBZR1–D2–OFP1 module, providing a target for improving rice yield.

Under the double pressures of economic growth and ecological environment protection, sea green transformation and the sustainable development of mariculture are critical. This paper constructs an evolutionary game model with the government as the main body and mariculture farmers (enterprises) as the main body and puts forward the research hypothesis. Based on 2006–2019 longitudinal data of nine provinces along China’s coast, using multi-period Difference-in-Difference (DID) and dual robust estimation, we empirically investigate the national oceanic ranch demonstration zones for the influence of the green sea aquaculture and their mechanism of action. The results showed that (1) the efficiency of green level of mariculture industry in China is not high, and the establishment of national marine pasture demonstration zone has not effectively promoted the improvement of green level of mariculture industry; (2) the institutional environment, unreasonable industrial structure, and lack of scientific and technological innovation have an effect on the national oceanic ranch demonstration area as the main causes of failure to effectively promote marine green farming; (3) the establishment of the national multi-period demonstration area in the north significantly hindered the growth of the green level of mariculture and fell into the “policy trap”, while the establishment of the national multi-period demonstration area in the south significantly promoted the growth of the green level of mariculture. The conclusions of this paper provide an empirical basis and reference for the improvement of the national marine pasture demonstration zone policy and the green transformation of mariculture to a certain extent.

Wheat is the main grain crop in our country, and the traditional wheat yield estimation method is time-consuming and laborious. By estimating wheat yield efficiently, quickly and non-destructively, agricultural producers can quickly obtain information about wheat yield, manage wheat fields more scientifically and accurately, and ensure national food security. Taking the Xinxiang Experimental Base of the Crop Science Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences as an example, hyperspectral data for the critical growth stages of wheat were pre-processed. A total of 27 vegetation indices were calculated from the experimental plots. These indices were then subjected to correlation analysis with measured wheat yield. Vegetation indices with Pearson correlation coefficients greater than 0.5 were selected. Five methods, including multiple linear regression, stepwise regression, principal component regression, neural networks and random forests, were used to construct wheat yield estimation models. Among the methods used, multiple linear regression, stepwise regression and the models developed using principal component analysis showed a lower modelling accuracy and validation precision. However, the neural network and random forest methods both achieved a modelling accuracy R2 greater than 0.6, with validation accuracy R2 values of 0.729 and 0.946, respectively. In addition, the random forest method had a lower cross-validation RMSE value, with values of 869.8 kg/hm−2, indicating a higher model accuracy. In summary, the random forest method provided the optimal estimation for wheat yield, enabling the timely and accurate pre-harvest wheat yield prediction, which has significant value for precision agriculture management and decision making.

This paper presents an empirical investigation into the effects of energy transition and digitization on carbon dioxide emissions, serving as a proxy for environmental sustainability, across 28 Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2021. Utilizing both static and dynamic regression analyses, the study reveals a significant driving effect of the energy transition on environmental sustainability, primarily through a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Notably, this influence is more pronounced in the eastern region of China, followed by the central and western regions, indicating regional heterogeneity in the impact of the energy transition. Furthermore, digitization is found to have a substantial moderating effect, enhancing energy conservation and emission reductions. As digitization progresses, its capability to diminish the impact of energy transitions on carbon dioxide emissions becomes more apparent, particularly in the eastern region, while this effect is less marked in central and western China. The study also delves into the nonlinear relationship between energy transitions and carbon dioxide emissions, discovering that increased levels of digitization can exacerbate the negative effects of energy transitions on emissions. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamics of energy transition and digitalization, highlighting their crucial roles in shaping environmental sustainability in China.

This study examines the relationship between economic factors and environmental sustainability in OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries from 1990 to 2022, with a particular focus on the impact of renewable energy consumption and environmental technologies on CO2 emissions. The research utilizes empirical data to establish a clear negative correlation between the adoption of renewable energy sources and the level of CO2 emissions, highlighting the effectiveness of renewable energy in reducing the environmental impact of economic activities. This finding supports the theoretical perspective that transitioning to cleaner energy sources is vital for achieving environmental sustainability and aligns with the objectives of the OECD’s environmental sustainability program. Further analysis reveals a significant negative impact of environmental technologies on CO2 emissions, underscoring the importance of technological innovation in environmental conservation efforts. The study also explores the dual influence of GDP growth, urbanization, industrialization, and trade on CO2 emissions, revealing both positive and negative effects across different stages of economic development. Initially, these factors contribute to increased emissions, but as economies mature and integrate more efficient and cleaner technologies, their impact on emissions becomes negative. These findings demonstrate the complex interplay between economic development and environmental sustainability and emphasize the need for policies that encourage renewable energy adoption, support environmental technological innovations, and guide economies towards sustainable practices. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, advocating for an integrated approach to ensure long-term environmental sustainability in OECD countries.

In-depth analyses of the spatial imbalance and polarization of marine green aquaculture efficiency have a profound impact on the realization of high-quality development of fisheries. Based on the data on mariculture in nine coastal provinces of China from 2006 to 2019, this research analyzed the spatial imbalance and polarization of green mariculture efficiency using quantitative measurements and explored their causes. The results showed that (1) the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China is relatively effective, but there is still room for improvement. The spatial imbalance of the whole country and the three marine economic circles shows an increasing trend, and the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China has two levels of differentiation characteristics. Compared with the coastal provinces with low and high levels of marine green aquaculture efficiency, the degree of spatial imbalance in the medium-level coastal provinces is greater. In the long run, the efficiency of China’s marine green aquaculture will slowly evolve to a high-level state, and it is particularly important to break the “self-locking trap” of the low-level state. (2) The differences in mariculture yield among coastal provinces are the main factor affecting the spatial imbalance of green mariculture efficiency in China. Promoting the development of low-carbon, resource-saving and high-added-value mariculture products and achieving a win–win situation of economic and ecological benefits is an important means to alleviate the spatial imbalance of China’s mariculture efficiency. (3) There is a certain polarization trend in the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China, and the polarization degree shows an overall upward trend. Compared with the northern and eastern marine economic circles, the spatial polarization of green aquaculture efficiency in the southern marine economic circle is the lowest. During the observation year, the change in green aquaculture efficiency in coastal provinces did not converge into minority groups, and the main reason for spatial polarization was that there was a large gap in green aquaculture efficiency among coastal provinces. The research results can provide a reference for accelerating the green transformation of mariculture and promoting the high-quality development of fisheries.

It is imperative to achieve the high-quality development of fisheries and green transformation of mariculture. Based on the data of marine aquaculture fisheries in China from 2006 to 2019, this research uses the Super-SBM (Slacks-Based Measure) model to measure the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China and analyzes the regional gap, evolution trend, and driving factors of marine green aquaculture efficiency in nine coastal provinces in China. The results are as follows: (1) The Super-SBM measurement results showed that the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China showed a fluctuating upward trend from 2006 to 2019. The results of nuclear density estimation and Dagum Gini coefficient show that there is an obvious regional gap in the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China, and the regional gap is increasing with time. The Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition results show that inter-regional differences and supervariable density differences were the main sources of marine green aquaculture efficiency. The results of barycentric elliptic standard deviation show that the gravity center of marine green aquaculture efficiency in China shifted to the south from 2006 to 2019, indicating that the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in southern China has had a high degree of improvement. (2) The spatial Markov chain results show that spatial proximity plays a key role in the state transfer of marine green aquaculture efficiency. The higher the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in neighboring provinces, the greater the effect on improving the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in the province. The state transfer of marine green aquaculture efficiency usually occurs between similar horizontal states, and there is less “leapfrog” transfer. (3) The results of the geographic detector show that the number of professional mariculture practitioners is the core driving factor and plays a leading role in the regional gap in the efficiency of marine green aquaculture in China. The explanatory power of the interaction of the two factors on the regional gap of marine green aquaculture efficiency is more than 90%, which is much higher than the explanatory power of a single factor. The regional gap of marine green aquaculture efficiency is the result of multiple driving factors.

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has markedly affected energy valuations and financial markets. As such, this article aims to scrutinize the dynamic interplay between stock market returns and crude oil prices, with a particular focus on China, factoring in the second-moment effect of volatility spillover. Employing an EGARCH process to model the leverage impact on returns’ volatility, the analysis utilizes daily data spanning from January 30, 2020, to August 30, 2022, and incorporates causality-in-mean and variance assessments. Empirical findings indicate that the QDII-LOF benchmark, representing oil prices, exerts a substantial influence on stock market returns. Nevertheless, the complete sample reveals no discernible spillover effects attributable to oil price fluctuations. These insights imply that the Chinese government’s actions should carefully weigh the ramifications of spillovers. Concurrently, investors are advised to attentively monitor the crude oil market when making portfolio allocation decisions.

Transferring the genome of distant species to crops is an efficient way to create new germplasms. However, the molecular mechanisms involved are unclear. In this study, a new rice restorer line R21 with heat tolerance was created by introgressing the genomic DNA of sorghum into the recipient restorer line Jin Hui 1. Assembly of rice R21 and Jin Hui 1 genomes was performed using PacBio sequencing technology. Comparative genome analysis and coverage statistics showed that the repetitive sequence atr0026 was a candidate introgression fragment of sorghum DNA. Sequence similarity analysis revealed that atr0026 was distributed at different copy numbers on the telomeric position of chromosomes 9 or 10 in R21, Jin Hui 1, and several rice varieties, indicating that the repetitive sequence from sorghum was highly conserved in rice. The repeat annotation in Gramineae indicated that ribosomal DNA loci that existed in atr0026 may be cause a rearrangement of chromosomes 9 and 10 of the R21 genome, resulting in a copy number variation at the 5′ end of it. Our study lays the foundation for further elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the heat tolerance of sorghum DNA introgression variant line R21, which is of great significance for guiding crop genetic breeding.
