Diatomite is a natural porous silica material of sedimentary origin, formed by remains of diatom skeletons called “frustules.” The abundance in many areas of the world and the peculiar physico-chemical properties made diatomite an intriguing material for several applications ranging from food production to pharmaceutics. However, diatomite is a material still rarely used in biomedical applications. In this chapter, the properties of diatom frustules reduced to nanoparticles, with an average diameter less than 350 nm, as potential drug vectors are described. Their biocompatibility, cellular uptake, and capability to transport molecules inside cancer cells are discussed. Preliminary studies of in vivo toxicity are also presented.

Recently an ever-increasing activity in the area of coupling between optical waveguide and ring or micro resonator has been developed. Devices based on this coupling held the promise of a new modality of light switching, amplifications and modulation. In this paper, the feasibility of an all optical switch based on the integration of the potentiality of microcavity resonator and organic materials having large nonlinearities, i.e. liquid crystals (LC's), is discussed. The device is based on silicon technology with hybrid integration of liquid crystals as a nonlinear material.

Self-assembled monolayers are surfaces consisting of a single layer of molecules on a substrate: widespread examples of chemical and biological nature are alkylsiloxane, fatty acids, and alkanethiolate which can be deposited by different techniques on a large variety of substrates ranging from metals to oxides. In this paper, we demonstrate that a self-assembled biofilm of proteins can passivate porous silicon (PSi) based optical structures without affecting the transducing properties. Moreover, the protein coated PSi layer can also be used as a functionalized surface for proteomic applications

The D-trehalose/D-maltose-binding protein (TMBP), a monomeric protein of 48 kDa, is one component of the trehalose and maltose (Mal) uptake system. In the hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus litoralis, this is mediated by a protein-dependent ATP-binding cassette system transporter. The gene coding for a thermostable TMBP from the archaeon T. litoralis has been cloned, and the recombinant protein has been expressed in E. coli. The recombinant TMBP has been purified to homogeneity and characterized. It exhibits the same functional and structural properties as the native one. In fact, it is highly thermostable and binds sugars, such as maltose, trehalose and glucose, with high affinity. In this work, we have immobilized TMBP on a porous silicon wafer. The immobilization of TMBP to the chip was monitored by reflectivity and Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, we have tested the optical response of the protein-Chip complex to glucose binding. The obtained data suggest the use of this protein for the design of advanced optical non-consuming analyte biosensors for glucose detection.

Complex micro- and nano-structured materials for photonic applications are designed and fabricated using top technologies. A completely different approach to engineering systems at the sub-micron-scale consists in recognizing the nanostructures and morphologies that nature has optimized during life’s history on earth. In fact, biological organisms could exhibit ordered geometries and complex photonic structures which often overcome the products of the best available fabrication technologies [1]. An example is given by diatoms, microalgae with a peculiar cell wall consisting of amorphous hydrated silica valves reciprocally interconnected in a structure called the frustule. Valve surfaces exhibit specie-specific patterns of regular arrays of chambers, called areolae, developed into the frustule depth. Areolae range in diameter from few hundreds of nanometers up to few microns, and can be circular, polygonal or elongate [2]. The formation of these patterns can be modeled by self-organised, genetically controlled processes. Despite of the high level of knowledge on the genesis and morphology of diatom frustules, their functions are not completely understood [2]. In this work, we show that the silica valves of marine diatoms, characterized by a photonic crystal-like structure, have surprising optical properties, being capable of filtering and focalizing light, as well as exhibiting optical sensing capabilities.

La presente invenzione riguarda l’utilizzo di materiale organico nella fabbricazione di dispositivi optoelettronici a cristalli liquidi in grado di indurre l’allineamento desiderato delle molecole del mezzo liquido cristallino. Il materiale organico biologico, in particolare proteine purificate da micro-organismi, è depositato, quale substrato allineante, con tecniche adeguate su materiali di supporto di comune utilizzo nei dispositivi basati sui cristalli liquidi, quali vetro e materiali semiconduttori. L’invenzione descrive inoltre la realizzazione di alcuni dispositivi ottici che utilizzano gli strati molecolari considerati.

All-optical networking can be the sole approach to provide the huge bandwidth required for future networks. The essential elements in such an optical network are optical switches. A number of options have been proposed in order to implement them efficiently. We focus on thermo-optical switches. First, the physical principles of the thermo-optic effect are briefly introduced. A description of the most common technologies used for the fabrication of thermo-optic switches is provided along with the values of thermo-optic coefficient for a number of materials. The main steps useful in order to design thermo-optical switches are also briefly introduced. Finally, a bird's-eye view of the main and recent proposals of switches based on the thermo-optic effect is reported and their performances compared.
