Search

A correlation between astrophysical high-energy neutrinos and blazars has been suggested by various authors. In particular, a likely association between IceCube events and intermediate and high-energy peaked BL Lac objects has led to a sample of 47 objects having a high probability of being neutrino sources. In the first paper of this series we reported optical spectroscopy of 17 objects, which together with data taken from the literature covered 80 per cent of the sample. Here we present spectroscopy obtained at large aperture telescopes of a further 17 objects (plus four additional targets), which completes the sample coverage. For twelve objects we are able to determine the redshift (0.07 < z 34 per cent and possibly as high as 80 per cent) fraction of masquerading BL Lac objects, for which the low equivalent width of the emission lines is due to the brightness of the boosted continuum, rather than being an intrinsic property, in our sample., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 7 Figures, 10 Tables

The dynamics of isolated galaxy pairs represents an important tool to investigate the behavior of gravity in the low acceleration regime. Statistical analysis of a large sample of galaxy pairs led to the noticeable discovery of a region of preferred 3-dimensional velocities centered at $\sim 150$ km/s and $\sim 100$ km/s wide, a feature hard to justify in the context of numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. It is shown here that such a feature is expected within the framework of the Modified Newtonian Dynamics, which, however, predicts it to be centered at $\sim$ 170 Km/s., accepted for MNRAS

We focus our analysis on 55 BL Lac objects with a hard Fermi gamma-ray spectrum, and for which a redshift or a lower limit to it has been determined by a previous study of ours. We extrapolate the spectral fits given by the 4FGL catalogue to the VHE band (>0.1 TeV), which can be explored by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Furthermore, we take into account the absorption due to the extragalactic background light, strongly depending on the redshift. Finally, we compare our results with publicly available sensitivity curves for a selection of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays currently operating or under construction. From our extrapolations and simulations we find a large number of promising candidates for observation with the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array observatory., 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Examining a catalogue of isolated galaxy pairs, a preferred orbital intervelocity of ~150 km/s was recently reported. This discovery is difficult to reconcile with the expectations from Newtonian numerical simulations of cosmological structure formations. In a previous paper we have shown that a preferred intervelocity for galaxy pairs is expected in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Here a detailed analysis of the MOND predictions is presented, showing that a remarkable agreement with the observations can be achieved for a mass to light ratio M/L~1 in solar units. We investigate the spectroscopic optical properties of gamma-ray sources detected with high significance above 50 GeV in the Third Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (3FHL) and that are good candidates as TeV emitters. We focus on the 91 sources that are labelled by the Fermi team as BL Lac objects (BLL) or Blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCU) , that are in the Northern hemisphere, and are with unknown or uncertain redshift. We report here on GTC spectra (in the spectral range 4100 - 7750 AA) of 13 BCU and 42 BLL. We are able to classify the observed targets as BLL and each source is briefly discussed. The spectra allowed us to determine the redshift of 25 objects on the basis of emission and/or absorption lines, finding 0.05 < z < 0.91. Most of the emission lines detected are due to forbidden transition of [O III] and [N II]. The observed line luminosity is found lower than that of QSOs at similar continuum and could be reconciled with the line-continuum luminosity relationship of QSOs if a significant beaming factor is assumed. Moreover for 5 sources we found intervening absorption lines that allows to set a spectroscopic lower limit of the redshift. For the remaining 25 sources, for which the spectra are lineless, a lower limit to z is given, assuming that the host galaxies are giant ellipticals., 22 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

There is mounting evidence that ultra-energetic neutrinos of astrophysical origin may be associated with blazars. Here we investigate a unique sample of 47 blazars, $\sim 20$ of which could be new neutrino sources. In particular, we focus on 17 objects of yet unknown redshift, for which we present optical spectroscopy secured at the Gran Telescopio Canarias and the ESO Very Large Telescope. We find all sources but one (a quasar) to be BL Lac objects. For nine targets we are able to determine the redshift (0.09~$, Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 9 Tables, Accepted for publication by MNRAS

The point spread function reconstruction (PSF-R) capability is a deliverable of the MICADO@ESO-ELT project. The PSF-R team works on the implementation of the instrument software devoted to reconstruct the point spread function (PSF), independently of the science data, using adaptive optics (AO) telemetry data, both for Single Conjugate (SCAO) and Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) mode of the MICADO camera and spectrograph. The PSF-R application will provide reconstructed PSFs through an archive querying system to restore the telemetry data synchronous to each science frame that MICADO will generate. Eventually, the PSF-R software will produce the output according to user specifications. We present optical spectroscopy of the close companions of 22 low redshift (z, 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted in MNRAS

Quasar projected pairs (QPPs) can be used for investigating the circumgalactic medium of quasars through the study of intervening absorption lines in the spectrum of the background quasar that are at the same redshift of the foreground quasar. Here we report on optical spectroscopy, gathered at Gran Telescopio Canarias, of 14 QPPs. In 7 cases we find MgII absorption lines associated with the foreground quasar. Only for two cases line-of-sight absorptions (LOS) are revealed. These new observations complement our previous study performed on other 30 QPPs. A brief discussion of the properties of the intervening absorption lines associated with the foreground quasar for the full dataset is reported., 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

This paper describes the database of optical spectra of BL Lacertae (BLL) objects ZBLLAC available at the URL https://web.oapd.inaf.it/zbllac/. At the present date, it contains calibrated spectra for 295 BLL. For about 35% of them, we report a firm measure of redshift z while for 35 sources we set a lower limit on z based on the detection of intervening absorption systems, mainly ascribed to Mg II (2800 Ang). We report here on the architecture of the database and on its web front-end that permits to filter, query and interactively explore the data. We discuss some properties of the objects in the present dataset by giving the distribution of the redshifts and reporting on the detected emission lines, which turn out to be mainly forbidden and ascribed to [O II] (3737 Ang) and [O III] (5007 Ang). Finally, we discuss on intervening absorption systems detected in 35 BLLs that allow us to set lower limits to their distance., Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Supplement

The BL Lac object 4FGLJ0955.1+3551 has been suggested as a possible source of ultra energetic neutrinos detected by the Icecube observatory. The target was observed in January 2020 at the Large Binocular Telescope. Our spectroscopy (4100-8500 Ang) yields a firm redshift z = 0.557 as deduced by the absorption lines of the host galaxy. The upper limit of the minimum equivalent width on emission lines is 0.3 Ang. From the source image we are able to resolve the host galaxy for which we measure an absolute magnitude M(R) = -22.9 and Re = 8 kpc, that is values which are typical of the host galaxies of BL Lacs., 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

The jet activity of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), and its interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM), may play a pivotal role in the processes which regulate the growth and star formation of its host galaxy. Observational evidence which pinpoints the conditions of such interaction is paramount to unveil the physical processes involved. We report on the discovery of extended emission line regions exhibiting an S-shaped morphology along the optical jet of the radio-loud AGN $\text{PKS}\,0521-365$ ($z=0.055$), by using long-slit spectroscopic observations obtained with FORS2 on VLT. The velocity pattern derived from the $\text{[O II]}\,\lambda 3727\,\AA,\, \text{H}\beta\, \lambda 4861\,\AA\,$ and [O III] $\lambda\lambda4959,5007\,\AA\,$ emission lines is well-fitted by a sinusoidal function of the form: $v(r)=\alpha r^{1/2}sin(\beta r^{1/2}+\gamma)$, suggesting helicoidal motions along the jet up to distances of $20\,\text{kpc}$. We estimate a lower limit for the mass of the outflowing ionized gas along the jet of $\sim$10$^4\,M_\odot$. Helical magnetic fields and jet precession have been proposed to explain helicoidal paths along the jet at pc scales; nevertheless, it is not clear yet whether these hypotheses may hold at kpc scales., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We investigate the environments of galaxies around BL Lac objects and FR I radiogalaxies, the alleged parent populations of misaligned sources. We report the study of an "Einstein Cross" configuration first identified in a set of HST images by Cerny et al. 2018. Deep spectroscopic observations obtained at the Spanish 10.4m GTC telescope, allowed us to demonstrate the lens nature of the system, that consists of a Lyman-break galaxy, not a QSO as is usually the case, at z = 3.03 lensed by a galaxy at z=0.556. Combining the new spectroscopy with the archival HST data, it turns out that the lens is an elliptical galaxy with M_V =-21.0, effective radius 2.8 kpc and stellar velocity dispersion sigma=208+-39 km/sec. The source is a Lyman break galaxy with Ly_alpha luminosity ~L* at that redshift. From the modeling of the system, performed by assuming a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) with external shear, we estimate that the flux source is magnified about 4.5 times, and the velocity dispersion of the lens is sigma_SIE=197.9-1.3+2.6 km/s, in good agreement with the value derived spectroscopically. We report on optical spectroscopy obtained at the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias of 28 Fermi gamma-ray sources that completes the study of a sample of 60 targets of unidentified objects for which the detection of an X-ray and/or radio source inside the 3FGL error box is available. The observations are aimed to characterize the nature and measure the redshift of these sources. For all optical counterparts, the observations allow us to establish their AGN nature. In particular, we found 24 BL Lac objects, one QSO, one NLSy1 and two objects showing spectral features typical of Seyfert 2 galaxies. For most of them, we determine a spectroscopic redshift, while for five we can set lower limits based on the lack of stellar features from the host galaxy. We describe the preliminary optimized layout for a partially optimized concept of an optical-8m class VLT-like 2x2 segmented camera where each channel is assisted by an equivalent of an MCAO system where the ground layer correction is commonly employed while the high altitude ones is performed in an open-loop fashion. While we derive the basic relationships among the Field of View and attainable correction with a pre-defined choice for the hardware, we discuss sky coverage and wavefront sensing issues employing natural and artificial references, involving the latest stateof-the-art in the development of wavefront sensing. We show that a flexible approach allow for a compensated Field of View that is variable and can be properly tuned matching the current turbulence situation and the requirement in term of quality of the compensation. We report on the detection of a stellar halo around NGC 1560, a 10^9 Mo spiral galaxy member of the Maffei group. We obtained deep images in the r and i bands using the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias in a field centered at ~ 3.7 arcmin (projected distance of 3.5 kpc) from the center of this galaxy. The luminosity function and the CMD show a clear excess of stars with respect to the expected foreground level at magnitudes fainter than the RGB tip at the distance of NGC 1560. The color of the halo stars implies a metallicity of Z ~ Zo/50, while their counts correspond to a stellar mass of ~ 10^7 Mo in the sampled region. Assuming a power law profile for the surface mass density of the halo, our data suggest a total stellar mass of 10^8 Mo for the halo of NGC 1560., Ap.J. Accepted, 10 pages, 8 figures

The bright BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 is a most likely counterpart of the IceCube neutrino event EHE 170922A. The lack of this redshift prevents a comprehensive understanding of the modeling of the source. We present high signal-to-noise optical spectroscopy, in the range 4100-9000 $\textrm{\AA}$, obtained at the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias. The spectrum is characterized by a power law continuum and is marked by faint interstellar features. In the regions unaffected by these features, we found three very weak (EW $\sim$ 0.1 $\textrm{\AA}$) emission lines that we identify with [O II] 3727 $\textrm{\AA}$, [O III] 5007 $\textrm{\AA}$, and [N II] 6583 $\textrm{\AA}$, yielding the redshift z = 0.3365$\pm$0.0010., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in ApJL

MICADO will enable the ELT to perform diffraction limited near-infrared observations at first light. The instrument's capabilities focus on imaging (including astrometric and high contrast) as well as single object spectroscopy. This contribution looks at how requirements from the observing modes have driven the instrument design and functionality. The properties of circum-galactic gas in the halo of quasar host galaxies are investigated analyzing Mg II 2800 and C IV 1540 absorption-line systems along the line of sight close to quasars. We used optical spectroscopy of closely aligned pairs of quasars (projected distance $\leq$ 200 kpc, but at very different redshift) obtained at the VLT and Gran Telescopio Canarias to investigate the distribution of the absorbing gas for a sample of quasars at z$\sim$1. Absorption systems of EW $\geq$ 0.3 $\rm{\AA}$ associated with the foreground quasars are revealed up to 200 kpc from the centre of the host galaxy, showing that the structure of the absorbing gas is patchy with a covering fraction quickly decreasing beyond 100 kpc. We present optical spectroscopy secured at the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias of the counterparts of 20 extragalactic gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi satellite. The observations allow us to investigate the nature of these sources and to determine their redshift. We find that all optical counterparts have a spectrum that is consistent with a BL Lac object nature. We are able to determine the redshift for 11 objects and set spectroscopic redshift limits for five targets. Only for four sources the optical spectrum is found featureless. In the latter cases we can set lower limits on the redshift based on the assumption that they are hosted by a typical massive elliptical galaxy whose spectrum is diluted by the non thermal continuum. The observations allow us to unveil the nature of these gamma-ray sources and provide a sanity check of a tool to discover the counterparts of gamma-ray emitters/blazars based on their multiwavelength emission., 24 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

Stellar halos around galaxies retain fundamental evidence of the processes which lead to their build up. Sophisticated models of galaxy formation in a cosmological context yield quantitative predictions about various observable characteristics, including the amount of substructure, the slope of radial mass profiles and three dimensional shapes, and the properties of the stellar populations in the halos. The comparison of such models with the observations provides constraints on the general picture of galaxy formation in the hierarchical Universe, as well as on the physical processes taking place in the halos formation. With the current observing facilities, stellar halos can be effectively probed only for a limited number of nearby galaxies. In this paper we illustrate the progress that we expect in this field with the future ground based large aperture telescopes (E-ELT) and with space based facilities as JWST., 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Proc. We present high S/N optical spectra of 10 BL Lac objects detected at GeV energies by Fermi satellite (3FGL catalog), for which previous observations suggested that they are at relatively high redshift. The new observations, obtained at the 10 m Gran Telescopio Canarias, allowed us to find the redshift for J0814.5+2943 (z = 0.703) and we can set spectroscopic lower limit for J0008.0+4713 (z>1.659) and J1107.7+0222 (z>1.0735) on the basis of Mg II intervening absorption features. In addition we confirm the redshifts for J0505.5+0416 (z=0.423) and for J1450+5200 (z>2.470). Finally we contradict the previous z estimates for five objects (J0049.7+0237, J0243.5+7119, J0802.0+1005, J1109.4+2411, and J2116.1+3339)., 10 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an optical spectrum (4000-10500 {\AA} ) of the lensed blazar B0218+357 secured at the 10m GTC and aimed to investigate and clarify the properties of this intriguing system. We found that the emission line spectrum of the blazar is characterised by only one broad emission line that interpreted as Mg II 2800 {\AA} yields z=0.95. In addition we detect narrow absorption lines of Mg II 2800 {\AA} and Ca II (H,K) and Na I 5892 {\AA} at z=0.68437 +/- 0.00005 due to intervening interstellar gas. No stellar absorption features attributable to the lens galaxy are revealed. Thus the assumed redshift of the lens is dubious. The continuum spectrum of the object exhibits a remarkable drop towards the short wavelengths likely due to a significant extinction. This extinction cannot be produced in the lens galaxy at z =0.684 with any value of R$_V$ under the assumption that the intrinsic shape of the blazar is dominated by a power law emission. However, the observed continuum is consistent with a power law emission assuming a standard (R$_V$ = 3.1) extinction at the source redshift (z=0.95) as supported also by the presence of Mg II absorptions at the same redshift. HST images of B0218+357 exhibit the double image of the source together with extended image of a face on spiral galaxy. We argue that this galaxy is possibly not the lensing galaxy but the host galaxy of the blazar. The Fermi Gamma-ray Observatory discovered about a thousand extragalactic sources emitting energy from 100 MeV to 100 GeV. The majority of these sources belong to the class of blazars characterized by a quasi-featureless optical spectrum (BL Lac Objects). This hampers the determination of their redshift and therefore hinders the characterization of this class of objects. To investigate the nature of these sources and to determine their redshift, we are carrying out an extensive campaign using the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias to obtain high S/N ratio optical spectra. These observations allow us to confirm the blazar nature of the targets, to find new redshifts or to set stringent limits on the redshift based on the minimum equivalent width of specific absorption features that can be measured in the spectrum and are expected from their host galaxy, assuming it is a massive elliptical galaxy. These results are of importance for the multi-frequencies emission models of the blazars, to test their extreme physics, to shed light on their cosmic evolution and abundance in the far Universe. Extremely wide binary stars represent ideal systems to probe Newtonian dynamics in the low acceleration regimes (0.15 pc that are useful for the proposed test. While it would be premature to draw any conclusion about the validity of Newtonian dynamics at these low accelerations, our main result is that very wide binary stars seem to exist in the harsh environment of the solar neighborhood. This could provide a tool to test Newtonian dynamics versus modified dynamics theories in the low acceleration conditions typical of galaxies. In the near future the GAIA satellite will provide data to increase significantly the number of wide pairs that, with the appropriate follow up spectroscopic observations, will allow the implementation of this experiment with unprecedented accuracy., Accepted for publication on International Journal of Modern Physics D

We report results of a spectroscopic campaign carried out at the 10 m Gran Telescopio Canarias for a sample of 22 BL Lac objects detected (or candidates) at TeV energies, aimed to determine or constrain their redshift. This is of fundamental importance for the interpretation of their emission models, for population studies and also mandatory to study the interaction of high energy photons with the extragalactic background light using TeV sources. High signal-to-noise optical spectra in the range 4250 - 10000 �� were obtained to search for faint emission and/or absorption lines from both the host galaxy or the nucleus. We determine a new redshift for PKS 1424+240 (z = 0.604) and a tentative one for 1ES 0033+595 (z = 0.467). We are able to set new spectroscopic redshift lower limits for other three sources on the basis of Mg II and Ca II intervening absorption features: BZB J1243+3627 (z > 0.483), BZB J1540+8155 (z > 0.672), and BZB 0J2323+4210 (z > 0.267). We confirm previous redshift estimates for four blazars: S3 0218+357 (z = 0.944), 1ES 1215+303 (z = 0.129), W Comae (z = 0.102), and MS 1221.8+2452 (z = 0.218). For the remaining targets, in seven cases (S2 0109+22, 3C 66A, VER J0521+211, S4 0954+65, BZB J1120+4214, S3 1227+25, BZB J2323+4210), we do not validate the proposed redshift. Finally for all sources of still unknown redshift, we set a lower limit based on the minimum equivalent width of absorption features expected from the host galaxy., 22 pages, nine figures, five tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

Recently, the relation between the masses of the black hole ($M_{BH}$) and the host galaxy ($M_{host}$) in quasars has been probed down to the parameter space of $M_{BH}\sim10^8 M_\odot$ and $M_{host}\sim10^{11} M_\odot$ at z $, Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS. 9 pages, 4 figures

We study the environments of low redshift (z < 0.5) quasars based on a large and homogeneous dataset from the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We have compared the < 1 Mpc scale envi- ronments of 302 quasars that were resolved in our recent study to those of 288 inactive galaxies with closely matched redshifts. Crucially, the lu- minosities of the inactive galaxies and the quasar host galaxies are also closely matched, unlike in most previous studies. The environmental overdensities were studied by measuring the num- ber density of galaxies within a projected distance of 200 kpc to 1 Mpc. The galaxy number density of the quasar environments is comparable to that of the inactive galaxies with similar luminosities, both classes of ob- jects showing significant excess compared to the background galaxy density for distances < 400 kpc. There is no significant dependence of the galaxy number density on redshift, quasar or host galaxy luminosity, black hole mass or radio loudness. This suggests that the fueling and triggering of the nuclear activity is only weakly dependent on the local environment of quasars, and the quasar phase may be a short-lived common phase in the life cycle of all massive galaxies., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 16 pages

We present a photometrical and morphological study of the properties of low redshift (z < 0.5) quasars based on a large and homogeneous dataset of objects derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR7). This study over number by a factor � 5 any other previous study of QSO host galaxies at low redshift undertaken either on ground or on space surveys. We used � 400 quasars that were imaged in the SDSS Stripe82 that is up to 2 mag deeper than standard Sloan images. For these quasars we undertake a study of the host galaxies and of their environments. In this paper we report the results for the quasar hosts. We are able to detect the host galaxy for more than 3/4 of the whole dataset and characterise the properties of their hosts. We found that QSO hosts are dominated by luminous galaxies of absolute magnitude M*-3 < M(R) < M*. For the unresolved objects we computed a upper limit to the host luminosity. For each well resolved quasar we are also able to characterise the morphology of the host galaxy that turn out to be more complex than what found in previous studies. QSO are hosted in a variety of galaxies from pure ellipticals to complex/composite morphologies that combine spheroids, disk, lens and halo. The black hole mass of the quasar, estimated from the spectral properties of the nuclei, are poorly correlated with the total luminosity of the host galaxy. However, taking into account only the bulge component we found a significant correlation between the BH mass and the bulge luminosity of the host.

The next generation of large aperture ground based telescopes will offer the opportunity to perform accurate stellar photometry in very crowded fields. This future capability will allow one to study in detail the stellar population in distant galaxies. In this paper we explore the effect of photometric errors on the stellar metallicity distribution derived from the color distribution of the Red Giant Branch stars in the central regions of galaxies at the distance of the Virgo cluster. We focus on the analysis of the Color-Magnitude Diagrams at different radii in a typical giant Elliptical galaxy obtained from synthetic data constructed to exemplify observations of the European Extremely Large Telescope. The simulations adopt the specifications of the first light high resolution imager MICADO and the expected performance of the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Module MAORY. We find that the foreseen photometric accuracy allows us to recover the shape of the metallicity distribution with a resolution $\lesssim 0.4$ dex in the inner regions ($\mu_{\rm B}$ = 20.5 mag arcsec$^{-2}$) and $\simeq 0.2$ dex in regions with $\mu_{\rm B}$ = 21.6 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, that corresponds to approximately half of the effective radius for a typical giant elliptical in Virgo. At the effective radius ($\mu_{\rm B} \simeq 23$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$), the metallicity distribution is recovered with a resolution of $\simeq 0.1$ dex. It will thus be possible to study in detail the metallicity gradient of the stellar population over (almost) the whole extension of galaxies in Virgo. We also evaluate the impact of moderate degradations of the Point Spread Function from the assumed optimal conditions and find similar results, showing that this science case is robust.

We present optical spectroscopy of projected QSO pairs to investigate the MgII and the CIV absorption features imprinted on the spectrum of the background object by the gaseous halo surrounding the foreground QSO. We observed 13 projected pairs in the redshift range 0.7 1 Ang) are present also beyond a projected radius of ~70 kpc. If we take into account the mass of the galaxies as an additional parameter that influence the extent of the gaseous haloes, the distribution of the absorptions connected to the QSOs is consistent to that of galaxies. In the spectra of the foreground QSOs we do not detect any MgII absorption lines originated by the gas surrounding the QSO itself, but in 2 cases these features are present for CIV. The comparison between the absorption features observed in the transverse direction and those along the line of sight allows us to comment on the distribution of the absorbing gas and on the emission properties of the QSOs. We present the capabilities of the Advanced Exposure Time Calculator (AETC), a tool, publicly available via web interface (http://aetc.oapd.inaf.it/), aimed to simulate astronomical images obtained with any (given) telescope and instrument combination. The tool includes the possibility of providing an accurate modelling of PSF variations in the FoV, a crucial issue for realistic simulations, which makes AETC particularly suitable for simulations of adaptive optics instruments. To exemplify the AETC capabilities we present a number of simulations for specific science cases, useful for studying the capabilities of next generation AO imaging cameras for Extremely Large Telescopes.

In this paper we present simulated observations of galaxies at z=2 and z=3 to probe the capabilities of next-generation telescopes (E-ELT and JWST) to measure the structural and photometrical properties of high redshift galaxies. We carry out an extensive set of simulations of high redshift galaxies adopting the specifications of the E-ELT first light instrument MICADO. The main parameters (sizes, Sersic index, magnitudes) of the galaxies are measured using GALFIT and the accuracy of the determinations is assessed by comparing the input values to the measurements from many runs with different statistical noise. We also address the effects on the measurements accuracy of possible spatial variation of the PSF in the field. We find that from 3h exposure E-ELT near-IR images of galaxies at z=2 and z=3 it will be possible to measure the size, the total magnitude and the galaxy morphology with an accuracy of 5% for objects as faint as H=25 and half light size of 0.2 arcsec. The effective radius of compact, early type galaxies will also be recovered with 5% accuracy, provided that their half light size exceeds 20 mas. The determination of the redshift of extragalactic gamma ray sources is of fundamental importance for the interpretation of their emission models and extragalactic population studies, AGN classification schemes, and to study the interaction with the extragalactic background light. Here we focus on the BL Lac S2 0109+22, recently detected at very high energies. We obtained a high signal-to-noise optical spectrum at Gran Telescopio Canarias for the source over the spectral range 4000-10000 Angstrom, to search for spectral features of the host galaxy and/or of the nuclear source and it was compared with previous observations in order to confirm and/or dispute its redshift determination. We find the S2 0109+22 optical spectrum is well represented by a power law continuum without any absorption or emission feature of Equivalent Width >0.1 Angstrom. Based on the new optical spectrum we are able to set a redshift lower limit z>0.35, assuming the source is hosted by a massive elliptical galaxy typical for this class of sources. The redshift z=0.265 proposed in the literature for this object is most probably referred to a r=18.3 galaxy at 15" from S2 0109. This galaxy could belong to a group of faint galaxies located at z~0.26., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; accepted on MNRAS

We investigate the optical spectral properties of the blazar PKS 1222+216 during a period of 3 years. While the continuum is highly variable the broad line emission is practically constant. This supports a scenario in which the broad line region is not affected by jet continuum variations. We thus infer the thermal component of the continuum from the line luminosity and we show that it is comparable with the continuum level observed during the phases of minimum optical activity. The mass of the black hole is estimated through the virial method from the FWHM of MgII, Hbeta, and Halpha broad lines and from the thermal continuum luminosity. This yields a consistent black hole mass value of 6x10^8 solar masses.

TheMBH-Mhostrelation in quasars has been probed only in a limited parameter space, namely, atMBH∼109 M⊙andMhost∼1012 M⊙. Here we present a study of 26 quasars laying in the low-mass end of the relation, down toMBH∼107 M⊙. We selected quasars from the SDSS and HST-FOS archives, requiring modestMBH(as derived through the virial paradigm). We imaged our sources inHband from the Nordic Optical Telescope. The quasar host galaxies have been resolved in 25 out of 26 observed targets. Host galaxy luminosities and stellar masses are computed, under reasonable assumptions on their star formation histories. Combining these results with those from our previous studies, we manage to extend the sampled parameter space of theMBH-Mhostrelation in quasars. The relation holds over 2 dex in both the parameters. For the first time, we are able to measure the slope of theMBH-Mhostrelation in quasars. We find that it is consistent with the linear case (similarly to what observed in quiescent galaxies). We do not find any evidence of a population of massive black holes lying below the relation.

We investigate the properties of the circumgalactic gas in the halo of quasar host galaxies from CIV absorption line systems. Optical spectroscopy of closely aligned pairs of quasars (projected distance \leq 200 kpc) obtained at the Gran Telescopio Canarias is used to investigate the distribution of the absorbing gas for a sample of 18 quasars at z \sim 2. We found that the detected absorption systems of EW \geq 0.3Ang associated with the foreground QSO are revealed up to 200 kpc from the center of the host galaxy. The structure of the absorbing gas is rather patchy with a covering fraction of the gas that quickly decreases beyond 100 kpc. These results are in qualitative agreement with those found for the lower ionisation metal Mg II 2800 Ang., Very minor revision . Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Quasars are useful tracers of the cosmological evolution of the black hole mass - galaxy relation. We compare the expectations of Semi-Analytical Models (SAM) of galaxy evolution, to the largest available datasets of quasar host galaxies out to z=3. Observed quasar hosts are consistent with no evolution from the local M(BH) - L(host) relation, and suggest a significant increase of the mass ratio Gamma = M(BH)/M(host) from z=0 to z=3. Taken at face value, this is totally at odds with the predictions of SAM, where the intrinsic Gamma shows little evolution and quasar host galaxies at high redshift are systematically overluminous (and/or have undermassive BH). However, since quasars preferentially trace very massive black holes (10^9-10^10 Msun) at the steep end of the luminosity and mass function, the ensuing selection biases can reconcile the present SAM with the observations. A proper interpretation of quasar host data thus requires the global approach of SAM so as to account for statistical biases.

We analyzed the longest phase-connected photometric dataset available for NGC 1313 X-2, looking for the ~6 day modulation reported by Liu et al. (2009). The folded B band light curve shows a 6 day periodicity with a significance slightly larger than 3 sigma. The low statistical significance of this modulation, along with the lack of detection in the V band, make its identification uncertain.

The dynamical properties of six SDSS quasar pairs at z < 0.8 are investigated. The pairs have proper transverse separation < 500 kpc, and velocity difference along the line of sight < 500 km/s. If they are bound systems their dynamical mass can be evaluated and compared with that of host galaxies. Evidence is found of an excess of the former mass with respect to the latter. This suggests that these quasar pairs are hosted by galaxies with massive dark halos or that they reside in a group/cluster of galaxies.

We report on 16 BL Lacertae objects that were proposed to be at z > 1. We present spectroscopic observations secured at the 10.4m GTC that allowed us to assess the redshift of these sources. In particular, for five objects we disprove the previous value of the redshift reported in literature and found that they lie at z < 1. Moreover, two of them exhibit broad emission lines that are not characteristic of BL Lacertae object. On the other hand, for eight targets we improve the tentative value of z, previously based on only one feature, by detecting a number emission lines. Finally, in three cases we detect onset of Ly-�� forest at z > 2.50. Based on the new high quality spectra we found that only half of the observed objects can be classified as bona-fine BL Lacs., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the dependence of the M_bh - M_host relation on the redshift up to z=3 for a sample of 96 quasars the host galaxy luminosities of which are known. Black hole masses were estimated assuming virial equilibrium in the broad line regions (Paper I), while the host galaxy masses were inferred from their luminosities. With this data we are able to pin down the redshift dependence of the M_bh - M_host relation along 85 per cent of the Universe age. We show that, in the sampled redshift range, the M_bh - L_host relation remains nearly unchanged. Once we take into account the aging of the stellar population, we find that the M_bh / M_host ratio (Gamma) increases by a factor ~7 from z=0 to z=3. We show that Gamma evolves with z regardless of the radio loudness and of the quasar luminosity. We propose that most massive black holes, living their quasar phase at high-redshift, become extremely rare objects in host galaxies of similar mass in the Local Universe.
