Two-dimensional monolayers derived from 3D bulk structures remain a relatively unexplored class of materials because of the challenge of stabilizing nonepitaxial interfaces. Here, we report an unusual reconstruction during the deposition of precursors when targeting the synthesis of heterostructures with an odd number of PbSe monolayers. Multilayer elemental precursors of Pb|Se + V|Se were deposited to have the correct number of atoms to form [(PbSe)1+δ]q(VSe2)1 where q is the number of PbSe monolayers in the heterostructure. Structural analysis of the self-assembled precursor via X-ray reflectivity, X-ray diffraction, and HAADF-STEM suggests three different behaviors upon deposition. Precursors with q ≥ 7 and even values of q have the targeted nanoarchitectures after deposition, which are maintained as the products are self-assembled through a near diffusionless process. Significant lateral surface diffusion occurred during the deposition of precursors with q = 1, 3, and 5, resulting in the precursor to have a different nanoarchitecture than targeted. Additional perpendicular long-range diffusion occurs during self-assembly of these precursors, resulting in different final products than targeted. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of PbSe blocks show that the odd-numbered layers are less stable than the even-numbered layers, which suggests an energetic driving force for the observed rearrangement. This work highlights the importance of understanding the reaction mechanism when attempting to prepare 2D layers of constituents with bulk 3D structures.

In solid-state chemistry, the direct reaction of elements at low temperatures is limited by low solid-state interdiffusion rates. This and the limited number of processing parameters often prevent the synthesis of metastable compounds. Precisely controlling the number of atoms and nanoarchitecture of layered elemental precursors enabled the selective synthesis of two closely related metastable tin vanadium selenides via near-diffusionless reactions at low temperatures. Although the nanoarchitectures of the precursors required to form [(SnSe2)0.80]1(VSe2)1 and [(SnSe)1.15]1(VSe2)1 are very similar, controlling the local composition of the Sn|Se layers in the precursors enables the selective synthesis of either compound. The metastable alloy SnxV1-xSe2 was preferentially formed over [(SnSe2)0.80]1(VSe2)1, which has the identical composition, by modifying the nanoarchitecture of the precursor. Ex situ in-plane X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity collected as a function of annealing temperature provided information on lateral and perpendicular growth of [(SnSe2)0.80]1(VSe2)1. The presence of Laue oscillations throughout the self-assembly provided atomic-scale information on the thickness of the [(SnSe2)0.80]1(VSe2)1 domains, giving insights into the self-assembly process. A reaction mechanism is proposed and used to rationalize how composition and nanoarchitecture control the reaction pathway through the free energy landscape.

Three metastable compounds predicted to be kinetically stable using an “island” approach were successfully synthesized from designed modulated elemental reactants. Fe0.8V0.2Se2 was synthesized by depositing ultrathin elemental layers in a V|Fe|Se sequence to control the local composition. An alloyed rock salt structured Pb3Mn2Se5 constituent layer, which does not exist as a bulk compound, was synthesized in the heterostructure (Pb3Mn2Se5)0.6VSe2 by depositing a precursor with a V|Se|Pb|Se|Mn|Se|Pb|Se|Mn|Se|Pb|Se sequence of elemental layers that mimicked the compositional profile of the targeted heterostructure. The heterostructure (PbSe)1+δ(FeSe2)2 was prepared by depositing a precursor with a repeating layering sequence of Fe|Pb|Fe|Se, where each sequence contains the number of atoms required to form a single unit cell. In all three systems, the local compositions in the layer sequence kinetically favored the nucleation and growth of the targeted products during the deposition. The diffusion lengths to form the targeted compounds were short, and the diffusion was limited by postdeposition low temperature annealing to favor the growth of the targeted compounds and avoid the decomposition into a mixture of thermodynamically stable compounds.

Often, failure is caused by Li dendrites that grow through the separator, leading to short circuits. Here, we used a new characterization technique, cryogenic femtosecond laser cross sectioning and subsequent scanning electron microscopy, to observe the electroplated Li-metal morphology and the accompanying solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) into and through the intact coin cell battery's separator, gradually opening pathways for soft-short circuits that cause failure. We found that separator penetration by the SEI guided the growth of Li dendrites through the cell. A short-circuit mechanism via SEI growth at high current density within the separator is provided. These results will inform future efforts for separator and electrolyte design for Li-metal anodes.
