This study sought to evaluate the outcomes of IABP usage in these patients.Methods: Medline, EMBASE, and other internet sources were searched for relevant clinical trials. The primary efficacy endpoints (in-hospital, midterm, and long-term mortality) and secondary endpoints (reinfarction, recurrent ischemia, and new heart failure in the hospital) as well as safety endpoints (severe bleeding requiring blood transfusion and stroke in-hospital) were subsequently analyzed.Results: Thirty-three clinical trials involving 18,889 patients were identified. The risk of long-term mortality in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction was significantly decreased following IABP use (odds ratio [OR] 0.66, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.48–0.91, P=0.010). Both in-hospital and midterm mortality did not differ significantly between the IABP use group and no IABP use group (in-hospital: OR 0.87, 95% CI: 0.59–1.28, P=0.479; midterm: OR 1.12, 95% CI: 0.53–2.38, P=0.768). IABP insertion was not associated with the risk reduction of reinfarction, recurrent ischemia, or new heart failure. However, IABP use increased the risk of severe bleeding requiring blood transfusion (OR 2.05, 95% CI: 1.29–3.25, P=0.002) and stroke (OR 1.71, 95% CI: 1.04–2.82, P=0.035). In the thrombolytic therapy and cardiogenic shock subgroups, reduced mortality rates following IABP use were observed.Conclusion: IABP insertion is associated with feasible benefits with respect to long-term survival rates in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction, particularly those suffering from cardiogenic shock and receiving thrombolytic therapy, but at the cost of higher incidence of severe bleeding and stroke. Catalytic activation of C aryl -O bonds is considered as a powerful strategy for the production of aromatics from lignin. However, due to the high reduction potentials of diaryl ether 4-O-5 linkage models, their single electron reduction remains a daunting challenge. This study presents the blue light-induced bifunctional N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed one-electron reduction of diaryl ether 4-O-5 linkage models for the synthesis of trivalent phosphines. The H-bond between the newly devised bifunctional NHC and diaryl ethers is responsible for the success of the single electron transfer. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Microglial activation and neuroinflammation are key cellular events that determine the outcome of TBI, especially neuronal and cognitive function. Studies have suggested that the metabolic characteristics of microglia dictate their inflammatory response. The pyruvate kinase isoform M2 (PKM2), a key glycolytic enzyme, is involved in the regulation of various cellular metabolic processes, including mitochondrial metabolism. This suggests that PKM2 may also participate in the regulation of microglial activation during TBI. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the role of PKM2 in regulating microglial activation and neuroinflammation and its effects on cognitive function following TBI. A controlled cortical impact (CCI) mouse model and inflammation-induced primary mouse microglial cells in vitro were used to investigate the potential effects of PKM2 inhibition and regulation. PKM2 was significantly increased during the acute and subacute phases of TBI and was predominantly detected in microglia rather than in neurons. Our results demonstrate that shikonin and TEPP-46 can inhibit microglial inflammation, improving mitochondria, improving mouse behavior, reducing brain defect volume, and alleviating pathological changes after TBI. There is a difference in the intervention of shikonin and TEPP-46 on PKM2. Shikonin directly inhibits General PKM2; TEPP-46 can promote the expression of PKM2 tetramer. In vitro experiments, TEPP-46 can promote the expression of PKM2 tetramer, enhance the interaction between PKM2 and MFN2, improve mitochondria, alleviate neuroinflammation. General inhibition and tetramerization activation of PKM2 attenuated cognitive function caused by TBI, whereas PKM2 tetramerization exhibited a better treatment effect. Our experiments demonstrated the non-metabolic role of PKM2 in the regulation of microglial activation following TBI. Both shikonin and TEPP-46 can inhibit pro-inflammatory factors, but only TEPP-46 can promote PKM2 tetramerization and upregulate the release of anti-inflammatory factors from microglia., (© 2024. Cluster analysis, a pivotal step in single-cell sequencing data analysis, presents substantial opportunities to effectively unveil the molecular mechanisms underlying cellular heterogeneity and intercellular phenotypic variations. However, the inherent imperfections arise as different clustering algorithms yield diverse estimates of cluster numbers and cluster assignments. This study introduces Single Cell Consistent Clustering based on Spectral Matrix Decomposition (SCSMD), a comprehensive clustering approach that integrates the strengths of multiple methods to determine the optimal clustering scheme. Testing the performance of SCSMD across different distances and employing the bespoke evaluation metric, the methodological selection undergoes validation to ensure the optimal efficacy of the SCSMD. A consistent clustering test is conducted on 15 authentic scRNA-seq datasets. The application of SCSMD to human embryonic stem cell scRNA-seq data successfully identifies known cell types and delineates their developmental trajectories. Similarly, when applied to glioblastoma cells, SCSMD accurately detects pre-existing cell types and provides finer sub-division within one of the original clusters. The results affirm the robust performance of our SCSMD method in terms of both the number of clusters and cluster assignments. Moreover, we have broadened the application scope of SCSMD to encompass larger datasets, thereby furnishing additional evidence of its superiority. Background: Although people strive for meaning in life, life is full of experiences that challenge meaning. According to Bowen's family systems theory, the family is both a relational and an emotional system in which family members influence and are influenced by each other. Invalidating environment, reflecting a deficient family emotional setting, may be a key influencing factor in diminishing meaning in life. Existing studies have not directly explored the effects of the invalidating environment on meaning in life and its underlying mechanism., Objective: Guided by Bowen's family systems theory, this study aims to explore the relationship between invalidating environment and meaning in life, as well as the mediating effects of regulatory emotional self-efficacy and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs., Methods: A sample of 555 university students (62.5 % female, 37.5 % male; Mage =19.13 years old, SD = 1.72) completed questionnaires regarding demographics, invalidating environment, meaning in life, regulatory emotional self-efficacy, and basic psychological needs satisfaction., Results: Results revealed that: (a) invalidating environment negatively predicts meaning in life; (b) regulatory emotional self-efficacy and basic psychological needs satisfaction serve as both independent and chain mediators between invalidating environment and meaning in life., Conclusion: Invalidating environment affects meaning in life through regulatory emotional self-efficacy and basic psychological needs satisfaction. The COVID-19 pandemic has been present globally for more than three years, and cross-border transmission has played an important role in its spread. Currently, most predictions of COVID-19 spread are limited to a country (or a region), and models for cross-border transmission risk assessment remain lacking. Information on imported COVID-19 cases reported from March 2020 to June 2022 was collected from the National Health Commission of China, and COVID-19 epidemic data of the countries of origin of the imported cases were collected on data websites such as WHO and Our World in Data. It is proposed to establish a prediction model suitable for the prevention and control of overseas importation of COVID-19. Firstly, the SIR model was used to fit the epidemic infection status of the countries where the cases were exported, and most of the r2 values of the fitted curves obtained were above 0.75, which indicated that the SIR model could well fit different countries and the infection status of the region. After fitting the epidemic infection status data of overseas exporting countries, on this basis, a SIR-multiple linear regression overseas import risk prediction combination model was established, which can predict the risk of overseas case importation, and the established overseas import risk model overall P <0.05, the adjusted R2 = 0.7, indicating that the SIR-multivariate linear regression overseas import risk prediction combination model can obtain better prediction results. Injuries of the posterior root of the medial meniscus can be accompanied by damage to the anterior cruciate ligament or often occur independently in cases of degenerative meniscal injury in older individuals. Anchor suture repair can achieve favorable biomechanical effects and clinical outcomes. However, anchor placement is technically challenging and requires a posterior medial approach, which increases the risk of iatrogenic injury. To address these issues, we have utilized the reverse anchor technique to repair the posterior root of the medial meniscus. Background and Aims: HBV infection is a major etiology of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). At present, the pattern and regulation of hepatocyte death during HBV-ACLF progression are still undefined. Evaluating the mode of cell death and its inducers will provide new insights for developing therapeutic strategies targeting cell death. In this study, we aimed to elucidate whether and how immune landscapes trigger hepatocyte death and lead to the progression of HBV-related ACLF., Approach and Results: We identified that pyroptosis represented the main cell death pattern in the liver of patients with HBV-related ACLF. Deficiency of MHC-I in HBV-reactivated hepatocytes activated cytotoxic NK cells, which in turn operated in a perforin/granzyme-dependent manner to trigger GSDMD/caspase-8-dependent pyroptosis of hepatocytes. Neutrophils selectively accumulated in the pyroptotic liver, and HMGB1 derived from the pyroptotic liver constituted an important factor triggering the generation of pathogenic extracellular traps in neutrophils (NETs). Clinically, elevated plasma levels of myeloperoxidase-DNA complexes were a promising prognostic biomarker for HBV-related ACLF. More importantly, targeting GSDMD pyroptosis-HMGB1 release in the liver abrogates NETs that intercept the development of HBV-related ACLF., Conclusions: Studying the mechanisms that selectively modulate GSDMD-dependent pyroptosis, as well as its immune landscapes, will provide a novel strategy for restoring the liver function of patients with HBV-related ACLF., (Copyright © 2024 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.)

The most common BRAF mutation is thymine (T) to adenine (A) missense mutation in nucleotide 1796 (T1796A, V600E). The BRAF V600E gene encodes a protein-dependent kinase (PDK), which is a key component of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and essential for controlling cell proliferation, differentiation, and death. The BRAF V600E mutation causes PDK to be activated improperly and continuously, resulting in abnormal proliferation and differentiation in PTC. Based on elastography ultrasound (US) radiomic features, this study seeks to create and validate six distinct machine learning algorithms to predict BRAF V6OOE mutation in PTC patients prior to surgery. This study employed routine US strain elastography image data from 138 PTC patients. The patients were separated into two groups: those who did not have the BRAF V600E mutation (n = 75) and those who did have the mutation (n = 63). The patients were randomly assigned to one of two data sets: training (70%), or validation (30%). From strain elastography US images, a total of 479 radiomic features were retrieved. Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (PCC) and Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) with stratified tenfold cross-validation were used to decrease the features. Based on selected radiomic features, six machine learning algorithms including support vector machine with the linear kernel (SVM&#95;L), support vector machine with radial basis function kernel (SVM&#95;RBF), logistic regression (LR), Naïve Bayes (NB), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were compared to predict the possibility of BRAF V600E . The accuracy (ACC), the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPEC), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), decision curve analysis (DCA), and calibration curves of the machine learning algorithms were used to evaluate their performance. ① The machine learning algorithms' diagnostic performance depended on 27 radiomic features. ② AUCs for NB, KNN, LDA, LR, SVM&#95;L, and SVM&#95;RBF were 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.65-0.91), 0.87 (95% CI 0.73-0.95), 0.91(95% CI 0.79-0.98), 0.92 (95% CI 0.80-0.98), 0.93 (95% CI 0.80-0.98), and 0.98 (95% CI 0.88-1.00), respectively. ③ There was a significant difference in echogenicity,vertical and horizontal diameter ratios, and elasticity between PTC patients with BRAF V600E and PTC patients without BRAF V600E . Machine learning algorithms based on US elastography radiomic features are capable of predicting the likelihood of BRAF V600E in PTC patients, which can assist physicians in identifying the risk of BRAF V600E in PTC patients. Here, we report a photocatalytic charge-transfer complex (CTC) strategy for one electron reduction of alkenes using thiolate as a catalytic electron donor. This catalytic CTC system could engage hydroarylation of both activated and unactivated alkenes for the synthesis of various heterocycles. The reactions do not require any photocatalysts or acids and are easy to perform. Mechanistic studies revealed the formation of a CTC between catalytic thiolate and alkene.

Bone metastasis is one of the main complications of lung cancer and most important factors that lead to poor life quality and low survival rate in lung cancer patients. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying lung cancer bone metastasis are still poor understood. Here, we report that microRNA-182 (miR-182) plays a critical role in regulating osteoclastic metastasis of lung cancer cells. We found that miR-182 was significantly upregulated in both bone-metastatic human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell line and tumor specimens. We further demonstrated that miR-182 markedly enhanced the ability of NSCLC cells for osteolytic bone metastasis in nude mice. Mechanistically, miR-182 promotes NSCLC cells to secrete Interleukin-8 (IL-8) and in turn facilitates osteoclastogenesis via activating STAT3 signaling in osteoclast progenitor cells. Importantly, systemically delivered IL-8 neutralizing antibody inhibits NSCLC bone metastasis in nude mice. Collectively, our findings identify the miR-182/IL-8/STAT3 axis as a key regulatory pathway in controlling lung cancer cell-induced osteolytic bone metastasis and suggest a promising therapeutic strategy that targets this regulatory axis to interrupt lung cancer bone metastasis., (© 2023. We aim to develop a clinical-ultrasound radiomic (USR) model based on USR features and clinical factors for the evaluation of cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This retrospective study used routine clinical and US data from 205 PTC patients. According to the pathology results, the enrolled patients were divided into a non-CLNM group and a CLNM group. All patients were randomly divided into a training cohort ( n = 143) and a validation cohort ( n = 62). A total of 1046 USR features of lesion areas were extracted. The features were reduced using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (PCC) and Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) with stratified 15-fold cross-validation. Several machine learning classifiers were employed to build a Clinical model based on clinical variables, a USR model based solely on extracted USR features, and a Clinical-USR model based on the combination of clinical variables and USR features. The Clinical-USR model could discriminate between PTC patients with CLNM and PTC patients without CLNM in the training (AUC, 0.78) and validation cohorts (AUC, 0.71). When compared to the Clinical model, the USR model had higher AUCs in the validation (0.74 vs. 0.63) cohorts. The Clinical-USR model demonstrated higher AUC values in the validation cohort (0.71 vs. 0.63) compared to the Clinical model. The newly developed Clinical-USR model is feasible for predicting CLNM in patients with PTC.

With advances in the fields of regenerative medicine, cell-free therapy has received increased attention. Exosomes have a variety of endogenous properties that provide stability for molecular transport across biological barriers to cells, as a form of cell-to-cell communication that regulates function and phenotype. In addition, exosomes are an important component of paracrine signaling in stem-cell-based therapy and can be used as a stand-alone therapy or as a drug delivery system. The remarkable potential of exosomes has paved the pathway for cell-free treatment in bone regeneration. Exosomes are enriched in distinct noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs, long ncRNAs and circular RNAs. Different ncRNAs have multiple functions. Altered expression of ncRNA in exosomes is associated with the regenerative potential and development of various diseases, such as femoral head osteonecrosis, myocardial infarction, and cancer. Although there is increasing evidence that exosome-derived ncRNAs (exo-ncRNAs) have the potential for bone regeneration, the detailed mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we review the biogenesis of exo-ncRNA and the effects of ncRNAs on angiogenesis and osteoblast- and osteoclast-related pathways in different diseases. However, there are still many unsolved problems and challenges in the clinical application of ncRNA; for instance, production, storage, targeted delivery and therapeutic potency assessment. Objective: To study the effects of exosome secreted by ovarian cancer (OC) cell on the differentiation and metastasis of normal fibroblasts (NFs). Methods: NFs were collected from patients who underwent hysteromyoma resection in the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from May to December 2019. Exosome was extracted from the culture supernatant of SKOV3 cells by using ultra-high-speed centrifugation. The NFs were co-cultured with condition medium (CM), exosome of SKOV3 (SKOV3-exo) and control medium. The expression levels of fibroblast activation protein (FAP) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were detected by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot. The metastatic ability of NFs was detected by Transwell array. Results: Under the transmission electron microscope, the extracellular vesicles extracted from the culture supernatant of SKOV3 were 30-100 nm in diameter with cup holder-like bilayer membrane structure, and the protein expression levels of TSG101 and HSP27 in exosomes (1.00±0.05 and 1.12±0.13) were higher than those of ovarian cancer SKOV3 cells (0.22±0.21 and 0.36±0.14, respectively, P <0.05). PKH67 fluorescently labeled exosomes could be taken up by NFs. The expression levels of α-SMA and FAP mRNA in CM group(2.91±0.15 and 3.21±0.33)and SKOV3-exo group (3.50±0.21 and 4.63±0.24, respectively) were higher than that in blank group (1.00±0.06 and 1.00±0.13, P <0.05). The protein expression levels of α-SMA and FAP in CM group and SKOV3-exo group (0.89±0.11 and 1.25±0.09, 0.81±0.09 and 1.20±0.12) were higher than those in the blank group (0.12±0.31 and 0.11±0.19, respectively, P <0.05). The migrated numbers of cells in the CM group and SKOV3-exo group [(215.01±14.80) and (389.72±19.43), respectively] were higher than that in the blank group [(113.73±4.70), P <0.05]. Conclusion: The exosome secreted by SKOV3 cells can be taken up by NFs, which makes it to differentiate into cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and significantly enhances its metastatic ability, indicating that OC cells may promote the transformation of normal ovarian mesenchymal fibroblasts to CAFs through exosome pathways, and then promote the development of ovarian cancer.

In this study, a field experiment of soil passivation and low accumulation-crops was carried out for typical northern alkaline cadmium and lead compound-polluted farmland soil. Calcite was used as the main passivation material, and a small amount of slaked lime, zeolite powder, and biochar were combined to form a group passivation agent. The effects of passivators on soil physicochemical properties, bioavailability of the heavy metals Cd and Pb, and the yield and plant (stalk and seed) content of heavy metals Cd and Pb in low-accumulation maize were investigated under different grouping conditions of calcite+slaked lime (CL), calcite+zeolite (CZ), calcite+biochar (CB), and calcite+slaked lime+zeolite+biochar (CLZB). The results showed that:① all applications of passivating agent ensured the normal growth of maize and slightly increased the 1000 grain weight and maize yield. ② The effects of different calcite-based passivators on soil physical and chemical properties were different. The CL, CZ, CB, and CLZB treatments increased soil pH by 0.46, 0.25, 0.12, and 0.13 units, respectively, but had no significant correlation with soil fertility index ( P >0.05). ③ DTPA leaching and ion exchange state contents of Cd and Pb in soil could be significantly reduced by different calcite-based combinations with passivators, and the reduction rates of Cd and Pb in DTPA leaching were 49.36% and 72.55%, respectively. The reduction rates of ion exchange Cd and Pb contents were 55.39% and 78.52%, respectively. ④ The contents of Cd and Pb in stems, leaves, and grains of low-accumulation maize were further reduced by different passivating agents. The contents of Cd and Pb in the stems and leaves of maize were reduced by 45.93% and 67.00% after CLZB treatment, and the contents of Cd and Pb in grains were decreased by 25.17% and 46.62%, respectively. Moreover, the contents of Cd and Pb in DTPA extraction and ion exchange states were significantly positively correlated with the contents of Cd and Pb in corn stems, leaves, and grains ( P <0.01). The results showed that the combined use of combination passivators and low-accumulation crop varieties can obtain better restoration effects in the remediation of cadmium and lead combined-polluted farmland in the middle alkaline soil in northern China.

Despite the alleviation of particulate matter (PM), the ambient ozone (O 3 ) concentration is continuously increasing in Hunan province where the investigation of O 3 pollution has been rarely reported. Accordingly, the spatio-temporal evolution of O 3 pollution was first analyzed based on hourly air quality data observed by national monitoring stations from 2015 to 2020 over 14 cities in Hunan province. Afterwards, the combination of meteorological data from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) and the generalized additive model (GAM) was applied to investigate the driving factors of the O 3 long-term trend during this period. The results presented obvious diurnal, monthly, and seasonal characteristics of O 3 variations. High O 3 concentrations occurred in May and September monthly, and the peak O 3 season was autumn. Furthermore, the 90 th percentile O 3 increased at a rate of 4.7 μg·(m 3 ·a) -1 temporally, and high O 3 values mainly occurred in the north-eastern region spatially, in contrast to the low O 3 values in the western region. The modeling results indicated that the increase in O 3 was mainly ascribed to precursor emissions. Furthermore, meteorology promoted a rise in O 3 with the impact magnitude of 1 μg·(m 3 ·a) -1 . Remarkably, meteorology accelerated the O 3 increases in spring, summer, and the eastern region, whereas it restrained increases in autumn, winter, and the northwest. The effect of meteorology on PM 10 was different from O 3 during this period. Overall, this study highlighted the importance of meteorological impacts when regulating emission reduction measures for O 3 abatement. It required greater effort regarding O 3 mitigation to offset the side-effect from meteorology in meteorology-sensitive seasons and regions. Additionally, the regional corporation is indispensable to reduce O 3 transportation from upwind.

In order to provide technical support for the safe utilization of heavy metal-polluted farmland, we screened wheat varieties with a low accumulation of Cd in grain via a pot experiment. For this purpose, we respectively investigated the enrichment and transport characteristics of Cd in various plant parts of 119 wheat varieties under the conditions of 1.5 mg·kg -1 (low content) and 4.0 mg·kg -1 (high content) Cd-contaminated soil and explored the correlation between the Cd content of different organs of wheat and the relationship between Cd content in soil and the uptake of Cd by wheat. The results showed that:① there were significant differences in the ability to accumulate and transport Cd in roots, stems, leaves, and grains of tested wheat varieties ( P <0.05). Under the condition of low Cd content, the Cd enrichment ability of each part of the wheat plant was as follows:leaf>stem ≈root>grain; under high-content stress conditions, the Cd enrichment ability of each part of the wheat plant was:leaf>root>stem>grain; under different content conditions, the Cd transport ability of each part of the wheat plant was:leaf>stem>grain. Cd content in the wheat shoot was positively correlated with total Cd content and ion-exchangeable Cd content in soil ( P <0.01) and was closely related to strong transpiration under the pot experiment. ② The correlation coefficient r of BCF Cd of wheat roots, stems, leaves, and grain was -0.267 to -0.645, showing a very significant negative correlation ( P <0.01), indicating that with the increase in soil Cd content, the migration and accumulation degree of Cd in wheat plant organs showed a downward trend. Moreover, the negative correlation between BCF Cd and soil Cd content in stems was significantly higher than that in roots, leaves, and grains, indicating that the enrichment of Cd in wheat plants largely depended on the accumulation and transportation of stems. ③ The correlation coefficient r of Cd content between the root and stem, root and leaf, root and grain, stem and leaf, stem and grain, and leaf and grain in low-and high-content groups was 0.450-0.763, showing a very significant positive correlation ( P <0.01), indicating that there was a close transport relationship among the wheat organs, and the degree of translocation from the root to stem and stem to leaf was higher than that from the stem to grain and leaf to grain. ④ Using cluster analysis and enrichment and translocation coefficient sequencing, this study screened 16 and 11 wheat varieties with low Cd accumulation under the soil cadmium content of 1.5 mg·kg -1 and 4.0 mg·kg -1 , respectively. Among them, Luohan 7 could be used as the optimal wheat variety with low Cd accumulation under the conditions of low-, medium-, and high-Cd content.

Background: Colon cancer is associated with a higher incidence among residents in high-altitude areas. Hypoxic environment at high altitudes inhibits the phagocytic and oxygen-dependent killing function of phagocytes, thereby increasing the inflammatory factors, inhibiting the body's innate immunity and increasing the risk of colon cancer., Aim: To examine the effect of minimally invasive surgery vs laparotomy in patients with colon cancer residing in high-altitude areas., Methods: Ninety-two patients with colon cancer in our hospital from January 2019 to February 2021 were selected and divided into the minimally invasive surgery and laparotomy groups using the random number table method, with 46 patients in each group. Minimally invasive surgery was performed in the minimally invasive group and laparotomy in the laparotomy group. Operative conditions, inflammatory index pre- and post-surgery, immune function index and complication probability were measured., Results: Operative duration was significantly longer and intraoperative blood loss and recovery time of gastrointestinal function were significantly less (all P < 0.05) in the minimally invasive group than in the laparotomy group. The number of lymph nodes dissected was not significantly different. Before surgery, there were no significant differences in serum C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α levels between the groups, whereas after surgery, the levels were significantly higher in the minimally invasive group (26.98 ± 6.91 mg/L, 146.38 ± 11.23 ng/mL and 83.51 ± 8.69 pg/mL vs 41.15 ± 8.39 mg/L, 186.79 ± 15.36 ng/mL and 110.65 ± 12.84 pg/mL, respectively, P < 0.05). Furthermore, before surgery, there were no significant differences in CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ levels between the groups, whereas after surgery, the levels decreased in both groups, being significantly higher in the minimally invasive group (55.61% ± 4.39%, 35.45% ± 3.67% and 1.30 ± 0.35 vs 49.68% ± 5.33%, 31.21% ± 3.25% and 1.13 ± 0.30, respectively, P < 0.05). Complication probability was significantly lower in the minimally invasive group (4.35% vs 17.39%, P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Laparoscopic minimally invasive procedures reduce surgical trauma and alleviate the inflammatory response and immune dysfunction caused by invasive operation. Thyroid nodules are commonly encountered in health care practice. They are usually benign in nature, with few cases being malignant, and their detection has increased in the adult population with the help of ultrasonography. Thyroidectomy or surgery is the first-line treatment and traditional method for thyroid nodules; however, thyroidectomy leaves permanent scars and requires long-term use of levothyroxine after surgery, which makes patients more reticent to accept this treatment. Thermal ablation is a minimally-invasive technique that have been employed in the treatment of benign and malignant thyroid nodules nodules, and have been shown to be effective and safe. Several studies, including long-term, retrospective, and prospective studies, have investigated the use of ablation to treat benign thyroid nodules and malignant thyroid nodules, including papillary thyroid carcinoma. Here, we review the recent progress in thermal ablation techniques for treating benign and malignant nodules, including their technicalities, clinical applications, pitfalls and limitations, and factors that could affect treatment outcomes. Cognitive impairment is one of the most common and devastating neuropsychiatric sequelae after traumatic brain injury (TBI), and hippocampal neuronal survival plays a causal role in this pathological process. Resolvin D1 (RvD1), an important endogenous specialized pro-resolving mediator, has recently been reported to exert a potent protective effect on mitochondria. This suggests that RvD1 may suppress neuroinflammation and protect astrocytic mitochondria at the same time to play further neuroprotective roles. C57BL/6 mice subjected to TBI using a controlled cortical impact device were used for in vivo experiments. Cultured primary mouse astrocytes and an N2a mouse neuroblastoma cell line were used for in vitro experiments. In TBI mice, RvD1 significantly ameliorated cognitive impairment, suppressed gliosis and alleviated neuronal loss in the hippocampus. To explore the mechanism underlying this activity, we verified that RvD1 can induce a higher level of mitophagy to remove damaged mitochondria and eliminate extra mitochondria-derived reactive oxygen species (mitoROS) by activating ALX4/FPR2 receptors in astrocytes. In an in vitro model, we further confirmed that RvD1 can protect mitochondrial morphology and membrane potential in astrocytes and thereby enhance the survival of neurons. Meanwhile, RvD1 was also shown to increase the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and glutamate aspartate transporter in the hippocampus following TBI, which indicates a possible way by which RvD1 increases the supportive function of astrocytes. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the deadliest gynecological malignancy. The pathogenesis of molecular in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), main histological type of OC, has not been completely defined. Enhancer of rudimentary homolog (ERH) had been reported to participate in transcriptional regulation, mRNA splicing, DNA repair and DNA synthesis by binding a variety of proteins. In this study, immunohistochemical staining revealed that the protein expression of ERH was associated with histological type, lymph node metastasis and pathological grade in EOC patients. To verify the association of ERH with the prognosis of OC, a GSE microarray dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Survival analysis suggested that ERH may be associated with poor prognosis of OC. In addition, shRNA was used to knockdown the protein and mRNA expression levels of ERH in the OC cell line SKOV3. Inhibition of ERH expression slowed proliferation, promoted apoptosis and inhibited metastasis and invasion by regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in SKOV3 cells. Background: The clinical outcome of transtrochanteric rotational osteotomy (TRO) for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) remains controversial, and the promising clinical results of several Japanese studies could not be reproduced in American and European studies. Trying to solve controversies on TRO for ONFH rising from apparently conflicting studies, a meta-analysis was conducted to assess the 5- and 10-year hip survival rates (with conversion to artificial joint replacement and radiographic failure as endpoints) after TRO., Methods: All eligible studies were searched in seven comprehensive databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, VIP Database, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, and Wan Fang Database prior to June 2019. The outcomes evaluated were 5- and 10-year hip survival rates after TRO. The odds ratio and risk difference for the non-comparative binary data with the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for each outcome. The included studies were assessed for methodologic bias and potential reasons for heterogeneity were explored., Results: Nineteen studies of TRO for ONFH were eligible for this meta-analysis according to inclusion criteria. Based on the previous report, two calculation methods (Methods 1 and 2) were adopted in this meta-analysis. Furthermore, we performed a sub-group analysis of the 5- and 10-year hip survival rates (Method 1) after TRO for ONFH: Asian sub-population and non-Asian sub-population. Taking conversion to artificial joint replacement as the endpoint, 5- and 10-year hip survival rates (Method 1) after TRO for ONFH in the Asian population were 0.86 (95% CI = 0.82-0.89) and 0.72 (95% CI = 0.65-0.78), respectively, and 5- and 10-year hip survival rates after TRO for ONFH in the non-Asian population were 0.55 (95% CI = 0.43-0.67) and 0.42 (95% CI = 0.28-0.55), respectively. The 5- and 10-year hip survival rates (Method 2) after TRO for ONFH were 0.90 (95% CI = 0.79-0.95) and 0.89 (95% CI = 0.81-0.94), respectively. Taking radiographic failure as the endpoint, 5- and 10-year hip survival rates after TRO for ONFH were 0.70 (95% CI = 0.64-0.76) and 0.53 (95% CI = 0.46-0.61), respectively., Conclusions: The 5- and 10-year hip survival rates after TRO for ONFH were satisfactory in the Asian population, and were acceptable in the non-Asian population despite high early failure rates.

Multi-illuminant-based color constancy (MCC) is quite a challenging task. In this paper, we proposed a novel model motivated by the bottom-up and top-down mechanisms of human visual system (HVS) to estimate the spatially varying illumination in a scene. The motivation for bottom-up based estimation is from our finding that the bright and dark parts in a scene play different roles in encoding illuminants. However, handling the color shift of large colorful objects is difficult using pure bottom-up processing. Thus, we further introduce a top-down constraint inspired by the findings in visual psychophysics, in which high-level information (e.g., the prior of light source colors) plays a key role in visual color constancy. In order to implement the top-down hypothesis, we simply learn a color mapping between the illuminant distribution estimated by bottom-up processing and the ground truth maps provided by the dataset. We evaluated our model on four datasets and the results show that our method obtains very competitive performance compared with the state-of-the-art MCC algorithms. Moreover, the robustness of our model is more tangible considering that our results were obtained using the same parameters for all the datasets or the parameters of our model were learned from the inputs, that is, mimicking how HVS operates. We also show the color correction results on some real-world images taken from the web.

HPV is a very common virus worldwide spread by direct contact and involved in male reproductive health-related diseases such as infertility, condyloma acuminatum, and penile cancer. The development of HPV vaccines has contributed to the effective prevention of various subtypes of HPV and protection of males from HPV infection, especially the partners of HPV-positive females, the men who have sex with men, and those with a psychological fear of HPV infection. Therefore, HPV vaccines play an important role in the protection of males.

La-modified RHBCs (La-RHBCs) were fabricated by immobilizing La(OH) 3 nanoparticles on mesoporous rice husk biochars (RHBCs) using a co-precipitation method. Specifically, the effects of the pore structure of the RHBCs, solution pH, and coexisting substances on phosphate adsorption by the La-RHBCs were studied. The results showed that the La loading of the La-RHBCs was positively correlated with the mesoporosity of the RHBCs. La-modified RHBCs with higher mesoporosity hosts showed faster adsorption rates and lower leaching of La during phosphate adsorption. The adsorption process could be described by a pseudo second-order kinetic model, and the reaction rate was controlled by intraparticle diffusion. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted the adsorption process better, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities were 41.22, 43.26, and 45.62 mg·g -1 , respectively. The high P/La molar ratios of more than 1.5 indicated the high utilization efficiencies of the La in the La-immobilized RHBCs. Moreover, phosphate could be effectively removed by the La-modified RHBCs over a wide pH range of 3-9. The La-modified RHBCs also exhibited good adsorption selectivity towards phosphate in the presence of coexisting anions and humic acids. Phosphate adsorption by the La-RHBCs was enhanced in the presence of Ca 2+ , while it was inhibited in the presence of Mg 2+ .

Optical switches based on dielectric nanostructures are highly desired at present. To enhance the wavelength-selective light absorption, and achieve an absorption-induced switching effect, here we propose a graphene-based metamaterial absorber that consists of a dielectric grating, a graphene monolayer, and a photonic crystal. Numerical results reveal that the dual-band absorption with an ultranarrow spectrum of the system is enhanced greatly due to the critical coupling, which is enabled by the combined effects of guided mode resonances and photonic band gap. The quality factor of the absorber can achieve a high value (>500), which is basically consistent with the coupled mode theory. Slow light emerges within the absorption window. In addition, electrostatic gating of graphene in the proposed structure provides dynamic control of the absorption due to the change of the chemical potential of the graphene, resulting in an optional multichannel switching effect. Unlike other one-dimensional devices, these effects can be applied to another polarization without changing the structure parameters, and the quality factor is significantly enhanced (>1000). The tunable light absorption offered by the simple structure with an all-dielectric configuration will provide potential applications for graphene-based optoelectronic devices in the near-infrared range, such as narrowband selective filters, detectors, optical switches, modulators, slow optical devices, etc.

Injectable hydrogels have been paid more attentions on cell therapy and tissue regeneration resulting from the applications in minimally invasive surgical procedures with ease of handling and complete filling of defect area. Here, a biodegradable and injectable in situ hydrogel formed by glycyrrhizin (GL), alginate (Alg), and calcium (Ca) was developed for three-dimensional (3D) cell culture. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and rheology analysis were performed to characterize GL-Alg-Ca hydrogel and evaluate its formation mechanism, properties, and morphology. The biocompatibility of hydrogel was investigated by cell viability, morphology, and liver specific functions. The results of DSC, XRD, and rheology suggested that hydrogel was homogenous complex with stable structure and well viscoelasticity. Human hepatoma HepG2 cells cultured in hydrogels showed well morphology. Compared with the control group, cells in hydrogels showed good biocompatibility, and could maintain the viability, proliferation and liver function for longer periods of time. Furthermore, the hydrogel improved the mRNA expression of cytochrome P450, which were key enzyme to the metabolization of hepatocytes. Streptococcus suis is difficult to treat and responsible for various infections in humans and pigs. It can also form biofilms and induce persistent infections. Rhizoma Coptidis is a medicinal plant widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Although the inhibitory effects of Rhizoma Coptidis on biofilm formation have been investigated in several studies, the ability of Rhizoma Coptidis to inhibit S. suis biofilm formation and the underlying mechanisms have not yet been reported. In this study, we showed that sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (25 and 50 μg mL -1 ) of water extracts of Rhizoma Coptidis ( Coptis deltoidea C.Y.Cheng & P.K.Hsiao, obtained from Sichuan Province) were sufficient to inhibit biofilm formation, as shown in the tissue culture plate (TCP) method and scanning electron microscopy. Real-time PCR and iTRAQ were used to measure gene and protein expression in S. suis . Sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (25 and 50 μg mL -1 ) of Rhizoma Coptidis water extracts inhibited S. suis adhesion significantly in an anti-adherence assay. Some genes, such as gapdh , sly , and mrp , and proteins, such as antigen-like protein, CPS16V, and methyltransferase H, involved in adhesion were significantly modulated in cells treated with 50 μg mL -1 of Rhizoma Coptidis water extracts compared to untreated cells. The results from this study suggest that compounds in Rhizoma Coptidis water extracts play an important role in inhibiting adhesion of S. suis cells and, therefore, biofilm formation.

Carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and carotid plaque (CP) are highly correlated with cardiovascular disease. We aimed to determine the prevalence of CA and CP and their relationship with 10-year risks of stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).We studied 1584 T2DM patients aged 20 years and older. CA and CP were detected using ultrasonography. Ten-year stroke and CHD risk were determined using the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) risk engine.The prevalence of CA and CP increased gradually with age. Men had a higher prevalence of CA than women (CA: 58.18% vs 51.54%, P < .01). The 10-year CHD risk (27.9% vs 15.4%, P < .001) and stroke risk (15.2% vs 5.70%, P < .001) were higher in patients with CA than that of those without CA. Compared with patients without CA, the odds ratios (ORs) of CHD in CA and CP group were 4.47 and 10.78 for men, and 4.19 and 5.20 for women, respectively; in the case of stroke, the OR in CA and CP group were 8.83 and 12.07 for men, and 4.35 and 4.90 for women, respectively (P < .001 for all). Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis showed that CA was an independent risk factor for CHD [OR = 2.66, 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 2.05-3.46, P < .001] and stroke (OR = 3.11, 95% CI, 2.38-4.07, P < .001).CA and CP were prevalent in patients with T2DM and positively correlated with 10-year CHD and stroke risk. CA was an independent risk factor for 10-year CHD risk.

Staphylococcus xylosus is an opportunistic pathogen that causes infection in humans and cow mastitis. And S. xylosus possesses a strong ability to form biofilms in vitro . As biofilm formation facilitates resistance to antimicrobial agents, the discovery of new medicinal properties for classic drugs is highly desired. Aspirin, which is the most common active component of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compounds, affects the biofilm-forming capacity of various bacterial species. We have found that aspirin effectively inhibits biofilm formation of S. xylosus by Crystal violet (CV) staining and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The present study sought to elucidate possible targets of aspirin in suppressing S. xylosus biofilm formation. Based on an isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) fold-change of >1.2 or <0.8 ( P -value < 0.05), 178 differentially expressed proteins, 111 down-regulated and 67 up-regulated, were identified after application of aspirin to cells at a 1/2 minimal inhibitory concentration. Gene ontology analysis indicated enrichment in metabolic processes for the majority of the differentially expressed proteins. We then used the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway database to analyze a large number of differentially expressed proteins and identified genes involved in biosynthesis of amino acids pathway, carbon metabolism (pentose phosphate and glycolytic pathways, tricarboxylic acid cycle) and nitrogen metabolism (histidine metabolism). These novel proteins represent candidate targets in aspirin-mediated inhibition of S. xylosus biofilm formation at sub-MIC levels. The findings lay the foundation for further studies to identify potential aspirin targets.

Apoptosis and DNA oxidative damage serve significant roles in the pathogenesis of steroid‑induced femoral head necrosis. Vitamin E demonstrates anti‑apoptotic and anti‑oxidant properties. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of vitamin E on osteocyte apoptosis and DNA oxidative damage in bone marrow hemopoietic cells at an early stage of steroid‑induced femoral head osteonecrosis. Japanese white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (steroid, vitamin E‑treated, and control groups), each comprising 12 rabbits. Those in the steroid group (group S) were initially injected twice with an intravenous dose of 100 µg/kg Escherichia coli endotoxin, with a 24 h interval between the two injections, and then with an intramuscular dose of 20 mg/kg methylprednisolone, three times at intervals of 24 h in order to establish a rabbit model of osteonecrosis. The vitamin E treated group (group E) received the same treatment as group S, and were administered 0.6 g/kg/d vitamin E daily from the beginning of modeling. The control group (group C) was injected with normal saline at the equivalent dosage and times as the aforementioned two groups. Two time points, weeks 4 and 6 following the completion of modeling, were selected. Osteonecrosis was verified by histopathology with hematoxylin-eosin staining. The apoptosis rate of osteonecrosis was analyzed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay. The apoptosis expression levels of caspase‑3 and B‑cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl‑2), and DNA oxidative damage of bone marrow hematopoietic cells were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. At weeks 4 and 6 following the completion of modeling, the vacant bone lacunae rates of group E were 15.87±1.97 and 25.09±2.67%, respectively, lower than the results of 20.02±2.21 and 27.79±1.39% for group S; and the osteocyte apoptosis indexes of group E were 20.99±2.95 and 33.93±1.62%, respectively, lower than the results of 26.46±3.37 and 39.90±3.74% from group S. In addition, the Bcl-2 expression at week 4 in the femoral head tissues of group E was higher compared with group S; and the proportion of Bcl‑2‑positive cells of group E was 9.81±1.01%, higher compared with group S at 8.26±1.13%. The caspase‑3 staining data at week 4 in femoral head tissues demonstrated that in the 12 femoral heads of group S, four were negative (32%) and eight were positive (68%); in group E, five were negative (45%) and seven were positive (55%); and in group C, 11 were negative (95%) and one was positive (5%). In addition, the DNA oxidative damage rate at week 4 in the bone marrow hemopoietic cells of group E was (7.24±1.44%), lower compared with group S (11.80±1.26%), and higher compared with group C (5.75±1.47%). Vitamin E is effective in intervening in apoptosis through decreasing caspase‑3 expression and upregulating Bcl‑2 expression, and by alleviating DNA oxidative damage in bone marrow hemopoietic cells at the early stage of steroid‑induced femoral head necrosis in rabbit models.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between CKD and CVD risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in China has not yet been well investigated. This study aimed to determine the association of CKD with the risks of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in a Chinese population with T2DM., Methods: A total of 1401 inpatients with T2DM at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine between April 2008 and November 2013 were included in this study. The CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration equation for Asians was used to classify CKD. The UK Prospective Diabetes Study risk engine was used to estimate the risks of CHD and stroke., Results: CHD risk was significantly increased with CKD stage (20.1%, 24.8%, and 34.3% in T2DM patients with no CKD, CKD Stage 1-2, and Stage 3-5, respectively; P < 0.001 for all). The stroke risk was also increased with CKD stage (8.6%, 12.7%, and 25.4% in T2DM patients with no CKD, CKD Stage 1-2, and Stage 3-5, respectively; P < 0.001 for all). Compared with no-CKD group, the odds ratios (OR s) for high CHD risk were 1.7 (P < 0.001) in the CKD Stage 1-2 group and 3.5 (P < 0.001) in the CKD Stage 3-5 group. The corresponding OR s for high stroke risk were 1.9 (P < 0.001) and 8.2 (P < 0.001), respectively., Conclusion: In patients with T2DM, advanced CKD stage was associated with the increased risks of CHD and stroke., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Objective: To explore the potential role and mechanism of microRNA(miR)-30a in myocardial fibrosis after myocardial infarction (MI)., Methods: Rats were randomly divided into 1 week MI group (n=11), 2 weeks MI group (n=13) and 4 weeks MI group (n=15) by applying random number table after left anterior descending coronary artery ligation. Rats in Sham group were examined at respective time points (n=16). Heart function was monitored by echocardiography. Myocardial collagen volume fraction (CVF) was determined on Masson stained sections. Myocardial expression of collagen Ⅰ and Ⅲ was determined by immunohistochemistry. The myocardial mRNA level of miR-30a, TGF-β1 and CTGF were detected by real time-quantitative PCR analysis. The myocardial protein levels of TGF-β1 and CTGF were measured by Western blot analysis., Results: The LVEDD ((8.37±0.58) mm) and LVESD ((6.12±0.82) mm) in 4 weeks MI group were significantly higher than those in Sham group ((6.08±0.57) mm, (4.17±0.60) mm), all P<0.01. The FS ((27.0±3.9) %) and LVEF ((51.0±6.3) %) in 4 weeks MI group were significantly lower than those in Sham group ((47.0±2.1) %, (82.0±2.3)%), all P<0.01. The level of myocardial CVF in 1 week MI group, 2 weeks MI group and 4 weeks MI group were significantly higher than in Sham group (all P<0.01) in a time-dependent manner. The level of myocardial collagen Ⅰ and Ⅲ was increased gradually from 1 week to 4 weeks post MI compared with Sham group (all P<0.01). The collagen Ⅰ/Ⅲ ratio was similar between 1 week MI group and Sham group (P=0.58), however, which was significantly higher in 2 weeks MI group and 4 weeks MI group compared with Sham group (all P<0.01), and the ratio was significantly higher in 4 weeks MI group than 2 weeks MI group (P<0.01). The level of miR-30a was significantly and gradually reduced in all MI groups compared with Sham group (all P<0.01). The mRNA and protein levels of TGF-β1 and CTGF were significantly and gradually increased after MI compared with Sham group (all P<0.001)., Conclusions: Our results indicate that overexpression of miR-30a after MI might be a potential strategy for suppressing myocardial fibrosis by modulating the mRNA and protein levels of TGF-β1 and CTGF.

Objective: The extraction process and film-forming preparation technology of Huayu Xiaozhong spray film was optimized respectively by orthogonal design and central composite design/response surface method (CCD-RSM)., Methods: With the extraction rate of amygdalin as the index, the orthogonal experiment was adopted for the optimization of extraction process. With the film-forming time, spraying effect, thickness and maintain time of spray film as the indexes, the dosages of PVA 1788, PVP k30 and glycerin as factors, the prescription was optimized by CCD-RSM., Results: The optimal extract processing was: immersing rude powder with 12 times of 60% ethanol for 24 hours. The optimal formula of Huayu Xiaozhong spray film was 5% of PVA 1788, 4.5% of glycerin and 5% of PVP-k30., Conclusion: Under the optimum condition, the extraction efficiency of amygdalin is 96.7%. Under the optimum technological condition of preparation, the spray film meets the demand of quality.

The sonoelectrochemical degradation of triclosan in aqueous solutions with high-frequency ultrasound (850kHz) and various electrodes was investigated. Diamond coated niobium electrode showed the best results and was used as standard electrode, leading to effective degradation and positive synergistic effect. The influence of different parameters on the degradation degree and energy efficiency were evaluated and favorable reaction conditions were found. Objective: To report the case of an individual with PHP, Turner syndrome and Hashimoto's thyroiditis., Case: A 16-year-old girl was referred to our hospital with chief complaint of short stature. She presented with round chubby facies, short neck, obesity and short stature. Radiography indicated short metatarsals and metacarpals, which mainly affected the second, third and fourth digits. Biochemistry revealed hyperphosphatemia, increased serum concentrations of parathyroid hormone and thyroid stimulating hormone, elevated levels of follicular-stimulating hormone and prolactin, and increased thyroid peroxidase antibody and thyroglobulin antibody. Radiographic examination revealed delayed bone age and pelvic ultrasonography demonstrated an immature uterus. Karyotype analysis showed 46,X,i(Xq10), while molecular analysis revealed a same sense mutation in exon 5 of GNAS (ATC → ATT, Ile).The specific diagnosis was made of Turner syndrome in the presence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and PHP. She was treated with calcium supplementation, calcitriol and thyroxine., Conclusions: This is the first case report to describe a combination of Turner syndrome with these other clinical entities, and their co-existence should be considered and further investigated.

Bacterial blight was observed on field-grown guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) for the first time in China. The disease outbreak occurred in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region after several weeks of unusually heavy rains during late summer 2013. The disease incidence was generally 40 to 50%, although values as high as 80% were observed in several fields. Initial field symptoms included water-soaked spots on leaves, pods, petioles, and stems. During later stages of infection, the color of the spots became dark. We also observed large, angular, necrotic lesions at leaf tips, black streaks on petioles and stems, split stems, defoliation, wilting or top withering, vascular necrosis, and dieback. Samples of diseased leaves, stems, petioles, pods, and seeds were surface sterilized, ground, and then plated onto King's B medium. Plates were incubated at 28°C for 72 h. Fifteen bacterial strains with yellow-pigmented, opaque, and round colonies were isolated. These strains were aerobic, gram-negative rods with a single, polar flagellum. They were positive for H 2 S, esculin, oxidase, tobacco hypersensitivity, indole production from tryptophan, nitrate reduction to nitrite, and the utilization of glucose, mannose, trehalose, galactose, and starch. The maximum salt tolerance of the strains was 2 to 3%. Pathogenicity tests using eight strains were conducted in July 2013. A bacterial culture was suspended in sterile water with a final concentration of 10 8 CFU/ml. Eight 4-week-old guar plants were inoculated by (i) spraying the bacterial suspension on the leaves until runoff, or (ii) puncturing the stems with a needle that had been dipped into the bacterial suspension. Sterile water was used as a negative control. Plants were kept in a mist room with 100% relative humidity for 24 h. Stem and leaf symptoms similar to those of the original plants were observed on the inoculated guar plants within 10 days of inoculation. No symptoms developed on the negative control plants. Yellow bacterial colonies re-isolated from inoculated plant tissues were morphologically identical to the original. 16S rDNA was amplified using universal primers (Pa 5'-AGTTTGATCCTGGCTCAG-3' and Ph 5'-TACCTTGTTACGACTTCGTCCCA-3') and sequenced. A BLAST search of the NCBI GenBank database indicated that the 16S rDNA sequences of three strains (accession nos. KF563926, KF563927, and KF563928) had 99.9% identity to Xanthomonas axonopodis strain XV938 (AF123091). Under greenhouse conditions, bacterial strains wilted asparagus bean and pea but rarely infected bean, kidney bean, faba bean, mung bean, soybean, red bean, pea, garbanzo bean, and peanut. Based on morphology, pathogenicity tests, 16S rDNA sequencing, and host plant specificity, the pathogen was confirmed as X. axonopodis pv. cyamopsidis (synonym: X. campestris pv. cyamopsidis [Patel et al., 1953]). To our knowledge, this is the first report of bacterial blight of guar caused by X. axonopodis pv. cyamopsidis in China. Guar has recently been introduced in Xinjiang Province. Our findings indicate that bacterial blight may pose a threat to the economic sustainability of guar production in the region. References: (1) I. A. Milyutina et a1. FEMS Microbiol. We study the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice using the cluster mean-field theory. We find a rapid convergence of phase boundaries with increasing cluster size. By extrapolating the cluster size L to infinity, we obtain accurate phase boundaries J(c1)(2) ≈ 0.42 (between the Néel antiferromagnetic phase and non-magnetic phase), and J(c2)(2) ≈ 0.59 (between non-magnetic phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic phase). Our results support the second-order phase transition at J(c1)(2) and the first-order one at J(c2)(2). For the spin-anisotropic J1-J2 model, we present its finite temperature phase diagram and demonstrate that the non-magnetic state is unstable towards the first-order phase transition under intermediate spin anisotropy.

Epidemiological studies of short and long sleepers have not been conducted previously. We collected socioeconomic, psychological, and polysomnographic characteristics of 6501 parents (3252 men and 3249 women) of 4036 primary school children in Guangzhou city. The study data were collected in three phases. The overall prevalence of short (5 h or less) and long (10 h or more) sleep duration was 0.52 and 0.64%, respectively. Long sleepers had higher Eysenck Personality Questionnaire neuroticism scores [odds ratio (OR)=1.224, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.047-1.409] and lower education levels (OR=0.740, 95%CI=0.631-0.849) than short sleepers. In the polysomnographic assessment, short, long, and normal sleepers (7-8 h) shared similar durations of Stage 3 sleep (short=25.7±10.7, long=20.3±7.9, and normal=28.0±12.8 min, F=1.402, P=0.181). In daytime multiple sleep latency tests, short sleepers (10/19, 52.6%) were more prone to have a short sleep latency (≤ 8 min) than long sleepers (2/23, 8.7%). In addition to different sleep durations, neuroticism might also contribute to differences between short and long sleepers in social achievements. Stage 3 sleep might be essential for humans. The short sleep latency (≤ 8 min) of short sleepers in multiple sleep latency tests should be interpreted cautiously, since it was of the same severity as required for a diagnosis of narcolepsy or idiopathic hypersomnia.

Herba eupatorii, one of the most important Chinese medicinal herbs, belongs to the Asteraceae family. In June 2012, a previously unknown disease, tentatively identified as powdery mildew, was observed on H. eupatorii growing in Shangqiu, in eastern Henan Province, China. Symptoms began as white mycelium partially covering upper leaf surfaces; as the disease progressed, it spread to cover entire leaf surfaces. The infected leaves became yellow and necrotic at advanced stages of infection. Specimens consisting of infected leaves were maintained at the Plant-Microbe Interaction Laboratory at Shangqiu Normal University. Microscopic observations of the morphology of the fungus revealed oval primary conidia measuring 18 to 27 × 15 to 22 μm. A long unbranched germ tube that germinated laterally from the ends of conidia was observed in some samples. Conidiophores were cylindrical, simple unbranched, and composed of a basal cell with a swollen base and three to six barrel-shaped conidia formed in chains, measuring 112 to 180 × 9 to 12 μm. Mycelial appressoria were nipple-shaped. Chasmothecia were not observed in the collected samples. To verify the identity of the fungus, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA was amplified with ITS1 and ITS4 primers (3) and sequenced. The sequences were deposited as GenBank Accession No. JX546297. Comparison with sequences in the GenBank database revealed that the ITS sequence was 100% homologous with the sequence of Podosphaera fusca on Calendula officinalis (AB525914) (2) and Syneilesis palmata (AB040349) (1). The ITS sequence analysis verified that the causal agent was P. fusca, which is reported to be a cosmopolitan powdery mildew fungus, parasitic on numerous plant species in the Asteraceae family. Koch's postulates were completed by inoculating healthy H. eupatorii plants with a conidial suspension (prepared in distilled water) of 10 5 conidia/ml collected from infected plants. Five plants were sprayed until the suspension ran off the leaves, while five additional plants were sprayed with distilled water as a control. Plants were maintained in a climate cell under the following conditions: day, 24°C, 16 h; night, 20°C, 8 h; 85% humidity. After 10 days, inoculated plants developed symptoms similar to those observed in the field, whereas control plants remained healthy. Further examination showed that the inoculated plants were infected by P. fusca. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. fusca affecting H. eupatorii in China. Because there are no fungicides labeled for use on this plant, the appearance of powdery mildew caused by P. fusca could result in substantial production loss of H. eupatorii. References: (1) T. Objective: To investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and exercise capacity in patients with chronic systolic heart failure., Methods: The elderly patients with chronic systolic heart failure were consecutively recruited from 2008 to 2011 in cardiovascular clinic of Zhejiang Hospital. All the participants underwent height and weight measurements and BMI was calculated with these two parameters. Cardiopulmonary exercise test were performed to achieve peak oxygen uptake (PVO(2)), oxygen uptake to body mass ratio (PKVO(2)), oxygen uptake to heart ratio (VO(2)/HR) and ventilation/carbon dioxide production (VO(2)/VCO(2))., Results: A total of the 273 patients with chronic systolic heart failure included 6 underweight patients (BMI < 18.5 kg/m(2)), 113 normal weight patients (BMI 18.5 - < 24.0 kg/m(2)), 116 overweight patients (BMI 24.0 - < 28.0 kg/m(2)), and 38 obese patients (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m(2)). In both NYHA II and III/IV patients, unadjusted correlation analyses showed that BMI was positively related to PVO(2) and VO(2)/HR, and was inversely related to PKVO(2) and VE/VCO(2) (P < 0.05), respectively. Multiple stepwise regression analyses showed age, sex, BMI (P < 0.05) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were independent determinants of PKVO(2), and age and BMI (P < 0.05) were independent determinants of VE/VCO(2)., Conclusions: BMI is significantly associated with exercise capacity in patients with chronic systolic heart failure, and also independent determinant for the PKVO(2) and VE/VCO(2), respectively.

The sonoelectrochemical degradation of phenol in aqueous solutions with stainless steel electrodes and high-frequency ultrasound (850kHz) was investigated. A 60% synergetic effect was obtained in the combined reaction system. High concentration of electrolyte (sodium sulfate) and a high electrical voltage are favorable conditions for the degradation of phenol. A nearly complete degradation of phenol was achieved with 4.26g/L Na(2)SO(4) and 30V electrical voltages at 25°C in 1h. The degradation of phenol follows pseudo-first order kinetics. In this study, we explored the rationality of processing methods and mechanism of Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fuzi) through comparing the chemical contents of diester alkaloids (DAs) and monoester alkaloids (MAs) in the raw material of Fuzi and its processed products. The results showed that the toxicity potency of MAs is at least lower than 1/64 to 1/180 of the toxicity potency of DAs. The contents of DAs in processed Fuzi decreased to 1/76.5 to 1/38.3 of the value of raw Fuzi. The contents of MAs in processed Fuzi significantly increased by 4.6 to 5.2 fold or basically the same as that of the raw Fuzi. The values of MAs/DAs of processed Fuzi were enhanced by 30 to 390 fold of the raw Fuzi. It was found that the contents of DAs were insignificantly different between "Wu dan fu pian" (steaming or stir-frying without Danba) and "Dan fu pian" (steaming or stir-frying with Danba). The result suggested that the abilities of "eliminating toxicity" of different processing methods were equivalent at all. In contrast, the contents of MAs contained in "Wu dan fu pian" were of 5.3 to 8.7 fold higher than the values in "Dan fu pian". This result suggested the processing method by steaming or stir-frying without Danba might have better effect for "conserving property" than the method processed with Danba stipulated by China Pharmacopoeia. We believe that the new processing method without Danba can be recommended in further application due to it offers a simple procedure and it will not introduce inorganic impurities in the products.

The present study aims at investigating the performance of a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 nm) and TiO(2) oxidation system for the pretreatment of oily wastewater from restaurant. The influence of irradiation time, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), the dosage of TiO(2) and the initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration on COD removal efficiency was ascertained and optimum process conditions for stable and effective operation were determined. Under the optimum conditions of irradiation 10 min, initial COD 3981 mg/L, TiO(2) 150 mg/L, pH 7.0 and flow rate of air 40 L/h, the process of VUV and TiO(2)/VUV achieved removal efficiencies of COD, BOD(5) and oil as 50±3%, 37±2%, 86±3%, and 63±3%, 43±2%, 70±3%, respectively. The biodegradability factor f(B) of the wastewater was determined as 1.56 which indicated that the VUV/TiO(2) process improved the biodegradability of the oily wastewater significantly. Results clearly indicate that VUV/TiO(2) photolysis tends to destruct parts of COD, BOD(5), and ammonia, as well as enhances the biodegradability of the oily wastewater simultaneously. Objective: To evaluate the effects of periodontal intervention on inflammatory cytokines, adiponectin, insulin resistance (IR), and metabolic control and to investigate the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and moderately poor glycemic control and chronic periodontitis., Methods and Patients: A total of 190 moderately poorly controlled (HbA1c between 7.5% and 9.5%) T2DM patients with periodontitis were randomly divided into two groups according to whether they underwent periodontal intervention: T2DM-NT and T2DM-T group. The levels of serum adiponectin, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), lipid profile, glucose, insulin, homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function (HOMA-β) were measured at baseline and after 3 months., Results: The levels of clinical periodontal variables, the probing depth, attachment loss, bleeding index, and plaque index were improved significantly in T2DM-T group after 3 months compared to T2DM-NT group (all p<0.01). After 3 months, the serum levels of hsCRP, TNF-α, IL-6, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting insulin (FINS) and HOMA-IR index decreased, and adiponectin was significantly increased in T2DM-T group compared to those in the T2DM-NT group (p<0.05 or p<0.01)., Conclusion: Periodontal intervention can improve glycemic control, lipid profile and IR, reduce serum inflammatory cytokine levels and increase serum adiponectin levels in moderately poorly controlled T2DM patients.

To investigate the effect of intermittent high glucose (IHG) and sustained high glucose (SHG) on inducing β-cell apoptosis and the potential involved mechanisms, INS-1 beta cells were incubated for 72 h in the medium containing different glucose concentrations: control (5.5 mmol/L), SHG (33.3 mmol/L), and IHG (5.5 mmol/L and 33.3 mmol/L glucose alternating every 12 h). Cell viability, apoptosis rate, and oxidative-stress markers were determined. The results showed that the apoptosis induced by IHG was more obvious than that by SHG. Simultaneously, the intracellular level of oxidative stress was more significantly increased in INS-1 cells exposed to IHG. These findings suggest that intermittent high glucose could be more deleterious to β-cell than a constant high concentration of glucose, this may be due to the aggravation of oxidative stress triggered by intermittent high glucose.
