The main pressing problems should be solved for heterogeneous catalysts in activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) are sluggish mass transfer kinetics and low intrinsic activity. Here, oxygen vacancies (Vo)-rich of Co 3 O 4 nanosheets were anchored on the superficies of spirulina-based reduced graphene oxide-konjac glucomannan (KGM) aerogel (R-Co 3 O 4-x /SRGA). The porous structure and superhydrophilicity conferred by KGM maximized the diffusion and transport of reactant. More interestingly, R-Co 3 O 4-x /SRGA came true self-suspension rather than conventional self-floating without the aid of external force, maximizing space utilization and facilitating catalysts recovery. Anchored R-Co 3 O 4-x nanosheets acted as "engines" to drive the reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) manifested Vo was capable of breaking the symmetry of the electronic structure of Co 3 O 4 . The formation of asymmetric active sites (Vo) was revealed to modulate the d-band center, enhanced affinity for PMS, and promoted evolution of high-valent cobalt-oxo (Co(IV)=O) species. R-Co 3 O 4-x /SRGA achieved complete removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 12 min. Furthermore, R-Co 3 O 4-x /SRGA demonstrated exceptional stability in the presence of various environmental interference factors and continuous flow device. Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) process is a promising wastewater treatment technology, but the slow microbial growth rate greatly hinders its practical application. Although high-level nitrogen removal and excellent biomass accumulation have been achieved in n-DAMO granule process, the formation mechanism of n-DAMO granules remains unresolved. To elucidate the role of functional microbes in granulation, this study attempted to cultivate granules dominated by n-DAMO microorganisms and granules coupling n-DAMO with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox). After long-term operation, dense granules were developed in the two systems where both n-DAMO archaea and n-DAMO bacteria were enriched, whereas granulation did not occur in the other system dominated by n-DAMO bacteria. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) measurement indicated the critical role of EPS production in the granulation of n-DAMO process. Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses revealed that n-DAMO archaea and Anammox bacteria were active in EPS biosynthesis, while n-DAMO bacteria were inactive. Consequently, more EPS were produced in the systems containing n-DAMO archaea and Anammox bacteria, leading to the successful development of n-DAMO granules. Furthermore, EPS biosynthesis in n-DAMO systems is potentially regulated by acyl-homoserine lactones and c-di-GMP. Applied voltage is a crucial parameter in hybrid microbial electrolysis cells-anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) systems for enhancing methane production from waste activated sludge (WAS). This study explored the impact of applied voltage on the initial biofilm formation on electrodes during the MEC-AD startup using raw WAS (Rr) and heat-pretreated WAS (Rh). The findings indicated that the maximum methane productivity for Rr and Rh were 3.4 ± 0.5 and 3.4 ± 0.2 mL/gVSS/d, respectively, increasing 1.5 times and 2.6 times over the productivity at 0 V. The biomass on electrode biofilms for Rr and Rh at 0.8 V increased by 70 % and 100 % compared to 0 V. The core functional microorganisms in the cathode biofilm were Methanobacterium and Syntrophomonas, and Geobacter in the anode biofilm, enhancing methane production through syntrophism and direct interspecies electron transfer, respectively. Overuse of antibiotics has led to their existence in nitrogen-containing water. The impacts of antibiotics on bio-denitrification and the metabolic response of denitrifiers to antibiotics are unclear. We systematically analyzed the effect of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on bio-denitrification and found that 5 mg/L CIP greatly inhibited denitrification with a model denitrifier (Paracoccus denitrificans). Nitrate reduction decreased by 32.89 % and nitrous oxide emission increased by 75.53 %. The balance analysis of carbon and nitrogen metabolism during denitrification showed that CIP exposure blocked electron transfer and reduced the flow of substrate metabolism used for denitrification. Proteomics results showed that CIP exposure induced denitrifiers to use the pentose phosphate pathway more for substrate metabolism. This caused a substrate preference to generate NADPH to prevent cellular damage rather than NADH for denitrification. Notably, despite denitrifiers having antioxidant defenses, they could not completely prevent oxidative damage caused by CIP exposure. The effect of CIP exposure on denitrifiers after removal of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) demonstrated that EPS around denitrifiers formed a barrier against CIP. Fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy revealed that the binding effect of proteins in EPS to CIP prevented damage. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) has received considerable attention in recent decades due to its high ecological risk. However, little is known about the potential response of macrophytes and microbes to varying levels of CIP exposure in constructed wetlands. Therefore, lab-scale manganese ore-based tidal flow constructed wetlands (MO-TFCWs) were operated to evaluate the responses of macrophytes and microbes to CIP over the long term. The results indicated that total nitrogen removal improved from 79.93% to 87.06% as CIP rose from 0 to 4 mg L -1 . The chlorophyll content and antioxidant enzyme activities in macrophytes were enhanced under CIP exposure, but plant growth was not inhibited. Importantly, CIP exposure caused a marked evolution of the substrate microbial community, with increased microbial diversity, expanded niche breadth and enhanced cooperation among the top 50 genera, compared to the control (no CIP). Co-occurrence network also indicated that microorganisms may be more inclined to co-operate than compete. The abundance of the keystone bacterium (involved in nitrogen transformation) norank_f__A0839 increased from 0.746% to 3.405%. The null model revealed drift processes (83.33%) dominated the community assembly with no CIP and 4 mg L -1 CIP. Functional predictions indicated that microbial carbon metabolism, electron transfer and ATP metabolism activities were enhanced under prolonged CIP exposure, which may contribute to nitrogen removal. Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production from waste activated sludge (WAS) by chain extension (CE) is a promising technology. However, the effects and mechanisms of CE process on the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remain unclear. In this study, the results showed that the removal efficiency of ARGs was 81.15 % in CE process, suggesting its efficacy in reducing environmental risks. Further, the observed decrease in mobile genetic elements (MGEs) indicated that CE process restricted the horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Complementing this, the increase in soluble organic matters and extracellular 16 S rDNA confirmed that MCFAs production caused bacterial damage. Decreased intracellular ARGs and increased extracellular ARGs further revealed that MCFAs production impaired ARGs hosts, thereby limiting the vertical gene transfer (VGT) of ARGs. Shift of microbial community combined with co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that functional bacteria without host potential for ARGs were enriched, but potential ARGs and MGEs hosts decreased, showing the role of functional bacterial phylogeny and selection pressure of MCFAs in reducing ARGs. In recent years, there has been significant interest in photocatalytic technologies utilizing semiconductors and photosensitizers responsive to solar light, owing to their potential for energy and environmental applications. Current efforts are focused on enhancing existing photocatalysts and developing new ones tailored for environmental uses. Anthraquinones (AQs) serve as redox-active electron transfer mediators and photochemically active organic photosensitizers, effectively addressing common issues such as low light utilization and carrier separation efficiency found in conventional semiconductors. AQs offer advantages such as abundant raw materials, controlled preparation, excellent electron transfer capabilities, and photosensitivity, with applications spanning the energy, medical, and environmental sectors. Despite their utility, comprehensive reviews on AQs-based photocatalytic systems in environmental contexts are lacking. In this review, we thoroughly describe the photochemical properties of AQs and their potential applications in photocatalysis, particularly in addressing key environmental challenges like clean energy production, antibacterial action, and pollutant degradation. However, AQs face limitations in practical photocatalytic applications due to their low electrical conductivity and solubility-related secondary contamination. To mitigate these issues, the design and synthesis of graphene-immobilized AQs are highlighted as a solution to enhance practical photocatalytic applications. Additionally, future research directions are proposed to deepen the understanding of AQs' theoretical mechanisms and to provide practical applications for wastewater treatment. Sulfate-dependent ammonium oxidation (Sulfammox) is a critical process linking nitrogen and sulfur cycles. However, the metabolic pathway of microbes driven Sulfammox is still in suspense. The study demonstrated that ammonium was not consumed with sulfate as the sole electron acceptor during long-term enrichment, probably due to inhibition from sulfide accumulation, while ammonium was removed at ∼ 10 mg N/L/d with sulfate and nitrate as electron acceptors. Ammonium and sulfate were converted into nitrogen gas, sulfide, and elemental sulfur. Sulfammox was mainly performed by Candidatus Brocadia sapporoensis and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida, both of which encoded ammonium oxidation pathway and dissimilatory sulfate reduction pathway. Not sulfide-driven autotrophic denitrifiers but Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis converted nitrate to nitrite with sulfide. Microplastics (MPs) pollution has emerged as a global concern, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are one of the potential sources of MPs in the environment. However, the effect of polyethylene MPs (PE) on nitrogen (N) removal in moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) remains unclear. We hypothesized that PE would affect N removal in MBBR by influencing its microbial community. In this study, we investigated the impacts of different PE concentrations (100, 500, and 1000 μg/L) on N removal, enzyme activities, and microbial community in MBBR. Folin-phenol and anthrone colorimetric methods, oxidative stress and enzyme activity tests, and high-throughput sequencing combined with bioinformation analysis were used to decipher the potential mechanisms. The results demonstrated that 1000 μg/L PE had the greatest effect on NH 4 + -N and TN removal, with a decrease of 33.5 % and 35.2 %, and nitrifying and denitrifying enzyme activities were restrained by 29.5-39.6 % and 24.6-47.4 %. Polysaccharide and protein contents were enhanced by PE, except for 1000 μg/L PE, which decreased protein content by 65.4 mg/g VSS. The positive links of species interactions under 1000 μg/L PE exposure was 52.07 %, higher than under 500 μg/L (51.05 %) and 100 μg/L PE (50.35 %). Relative abundance of some metabolism pathways like carbohydrate metabolism and energy metabolism were restrained by 0.07-0.11 % and 0.27-0.4 %. Moreover, the total abundance of nitrification and denitrification genes both decreased under PE exposure. Overall, PE reduced N removal by affecting microbial community structure and species interactions, inhibiting some key metabolic pathways, and suppressing key enzyme activity and functional gene abundance. Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) process offers a promising solution for simultaneously achieving methane emissions reduction and efficient nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. Although nitrogen removal at a practical rate has been achieved by n-DAMO biofilm process, the mechanisms of biofilm formation and nitrogen transformation remain to be elucidated. In this study, n-DAMO biofilms were successfully developed in the membrane aerated moving bed biofilm reactor (MAMBBR) and removed nitrate at a rate of 159 mg NO 3 - -N L -1 d -1 . The obvious increase in the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) indicated that EPS production was important for biofilm development. n-DAMO microorganisms dominated the microbial community, and n-DAMO bacteria were the most abundant microorganisms. However, the expression of biosynthesis genes for proteins and polysaccharides encoded by n-DAMO archaea was significantly more active compared to other microorganisms, suggesting the central role of n-DAMO archaea in EPS production and biofilm formation. In addition to nitrate reduction, n-DAMO archaea were revealed to actively express dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and nitrogen fixation. The produced ammonium was putatively converted to dinitrogen gas through the joint function of n-DAMO archaea and n-DAMO bacteria. The burgeoning issue of plasmid-mediated resistance genes (ARGs) dissemination poses a significant threat to environmental integrity. However, the prediction of ARGs prevalence is overlooked, especially for emerging ARGs that are potentially evolving gene exchange hotspot. Here, we explored to classify plasmid or chromosome sequences and detect resistance gene prevalence by using DNABERT. Initially, the DNABERT fine-tuned in plasmid and chromosome sequences followed by multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier could achieve 0.764 AUC (Area under curve) on external datasets across 23 genera, outperforming 0.02 AUC than traditional statistic-based model. Furthermore, Escherichia, Pseudomonas single genera based model were also be trained to explore its predict performance to ARGs prevalence detection. By integrating K-mer frequency attributes, our model could boost the performance to predict the prevalence of ARGs in an external dataset in Escherichia with 0.0281-0.0615 AUC and Pseudomonas with 0.0196-0.0928 AUC. Finally, we established a random forest model aimed at forecasting the relative conjugation transfer rate of plasmids with 0.7956 AUC, drawing on data from existing literature. It identifies the plasmid's repression status, cellular density, and temperature as the most important factors influencing transfer frequency. The widespread use of microplastics (MPs) has led to an increase in their discharge to wastewater treatment plants. However, the knowledge of impact of MPs on macro-performance and micro-ecology in simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) systems is limited, hampering the understanding of potential risks posed by MPs. This study firstly comprehensively investigated the performance, species interactions, and community assembly under polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exposure in SNDPR systems. The results showed under PS (1, 10 mg/L) and PVC (1, 10 mg/L) exposure, total nitrogen removal was reduced by 3.38-10.15 %. PS and PVC restrained the specific rates of nitrite and nitrate reduction (SNIRR, SNRR), as well as the activities of nitrite and nitrate reductase enzymes (NIR, NR). The specific ammonia oxidation rate (SAOR) and activity of ammonia oxidase enzyme (AMO) were reduced only at 10 mg/L PVC. PS and PVC enhanced the size of co-occurrence networks, niche breadth, and number of key species while decreasing microbial cooperation by 5.85-13.48 %. Heterogeneous selection dominated microbial community assembly, and PS and PVC strengthened the contribution of stochastic processes. PICRUSt prediction further revealed some important pathways were blocked by PS and PVC. Together, the reduced TN removal under PS and PVC exposure can be attributed to the inhibition of SAOR, SNRR, and SNIRR, the restrained activities of NIR, NR, and AMO, the changes in species interactions and community assembly mechanisms, and the suppression of some essential metabolic pathways. Ethane, the second most abundant gaseous hydrocarbon in vast anoxic environments, is an overlooked greenhouse gas. Microbial anaerobic oxidation of ethane can be driven by available electron acceptors such as sulfate and nitrate. However, despite nitrite being a more thermodynamically feasible electron acceptor than sulfate or nitrate, little is known about nitrite-driven anaerobic ethane oxidation. In this study, a microbial culture capable of nitrite-driven anaerobic ethane oxidation was enriched through the long-term operation of a nitrite-and-ethane-fed bioreactor. During continuous operation, the nitrite removal rate and the theoretical ethane oxidation rate remained stable at approximately 25.0 mg NO 2 - N L -1  d -1 and 11.48 mg C 2 H 6 L -1  d -1 , respectively. Batch tests demonstrated that ethane is essential for nitrite removal in this microbial culture. Metabolic function analysis revealed that a species affiliated with a novel genus within the family Rhodocyclaceae, designated as ' Candidatus Alkanivoras nitrosoreducens', may perform the nitrite-driven anaerobic ethane oxidation. In the proposed metabolic model, despite the absence of known genes for ethane conversion to ethyl-succinate and succinate-CoA ligase, ' Ca . A. nitrosoreducens' encodes a prospective fumarate addition pathway for anaerobic ethane oxidation and a complete denitrification pathway for nitrite reduction to nitrogen. 'Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens' is an archaeal methanotroph with global importance that links carbon and nitrogen cycles and great potential for sustainable operation of wastewater treatment. It has been reported to mediate the anaerobic oxidation of methane through a reverse methanogenesis pathway while reducing nitrate to nitrite. Here, we demonstrate that 'Ca. M. nitroreducens' reduces ferric iron forming ammonium (23.1 %) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O, 46.5 %) from nitrate. These results are supported with the upregulation of genes coding for proteins responsible for dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (nrfA), N 2 O formation (norV, cyt P460), and multiple multiheme c-type cytochromes for ferric iron reduction. Concomitantly, an increase in the N 2 O-reducing SJA-28 lineage and a decrease in the nitrite-reducing 'Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera' are consistent with the changes in 'Ca. M. nitroreducens' end products. These findings demonstrate the highly flexible physiology of 'Ca. M. nitroreducens' in anaerobic ecosystems with diverse electron acceptor conditions, and further reveals its roles in linking methane oxidation to global biogeochemical cycles. 'Ca. A limited understanding of microbial interactions and community assembly mechanisms in constructed wetlands (CWs), particularly with different substrates, has hampered the establishment of ecological connections between micro-level interactions and macro-level wetland performance. In this study, CWs with distinct substrates (zeolite, CW_A; manganese ore, CW_B) were constructed to investigate the nutrient removal efficiency, microbial interactions, metabolic mechanisms, and ecological assembly for treating rural sewage with a low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. CW_B showed higher removal of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen by about 1.75-6.75 % and 3.42-5.18 %, respectively, compared to CW_A. Candidatus_Competibacter (denitrifying glycogen-accumulating bacteria) was the dominant microbial genus in CW_A, whereas unclassified_f_Blastocatellaceae (involved in carbon and nitrogen transformation) dominated in CW_B. The null model revealed that stochastic processes (drift) dominated community assembly in both CWs; however, deterministic selection accounted for a higher proportion in CW_B. Compared to those in CW_A, the interactions between microbes in CW_B were more complex, with more key microbes involved in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus conversion; the synergistic cooperation of functional bacteria facilitated simultaneous nitrification-denitrification. Manganese ores favour biofilm formation, increase the activity of the electron transport system, and enhance ammonia oxidation and nitrate reduction. These results elucidated the ecological patterns exhibited by microbes under different substrate conditions thereby contributing to our understanding of how substrates shape distinct microcosms in CW systems. Polyethylene (PE) is the most productive plastic product and includes three major polymers including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) variation in the PE depends on the branching of the polymer chain and its crystallinity. Tenebrio obscurus and Tenebrio molitor larvae biodegrade PE. We subsequently tested larval physiology, gut microbiome, oxidative stress, and PE degradation capability and degradation products under high-purity HDPE, LLDPE, and LDPE powders (<300 μm) diets for 21 days at 65 ± 5% humidity and 25 ± 0.5 °C. Our results demonstrated the specific PE consumption rates by T. molitor was 8.04-8.73 mg PE ∙ 100 larvae -1 ⋅day -1 and by T. obscurus was 7.68-9.31 for LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE, respectively. The larvae digested nearly 40% of the ingested three PE and showed similar survival rates and weight changes but their fat content decreased by 30-50% over 21-day period. All the PE-fed groups exhibited adverse effects, such as increased benzoquinone concentrations, intestinal tissue damage and elevated oxidative stress indicators, compared with bran-fed control. In the current study, the digestive tract or gut microbiome exhibited a high level of adaptability to PE exposure, altering the width of the gut microbial ecological niche and community diversity, revealing notable correlations between Tenebrio species and the physical and chemical properties (PCPs) of PE-MPs, with the gut microbiome and molecular weight change due to biodegradation. This study proposed an efficient framework for optimizing the design and operation of combined systems of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and constructed wetlands (CW). The framework coupled a WWTP model with a CW model and used a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to identify trade-offs between energy consumption, effluent quality, and construction cost. Compared to traditional design and management approaches, the framework achieved a 27 % reduction in WWTP energy consumption or a 44 % reduction in CW cost while meeting strict effluent discharge limits for Chinese WWTP. The framework also identified feasible decision variable ranges and demonstrated the impact of different optimization strategies on system performance. Furthermore, the contributions of WWTP and CW in pollutant degradation were analyzed. Effective management of large basins necessitates pinpointing the spatial and temporal drivers of primary index exceedances and urban risk factors, offering crucial insights for basin administrators. Yet, comprehensive examinations of multiple pollutants within the Yangtze River Basin remain scarce. Here we introduce a pollution inventory for urban clusters surrounding the Yangtze River Basin, analyzing water quality data from 102 cities during 2018-2019. We assessed the exceedance rates for six pivotal indicators: dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total phosphorus (TP), and the permanganate index (COD Mn ) for each city. Employing random forest regression and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analyses, we identified the spatiotemporal factors influencing these key indicators. Our results highlight agricultural activities as the primary contributors to the exceedance of all six indicators, thus pinpointing them as the leading pollution source in the basin. Additionally, forest coverage, livestock farming, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, along with meteorological elements like precipitation and temperature, significantly impacted various indicators' exceedances. Furthermore, we delineate five core urban risk components through principal component analysis, which are (1) anthropogenic and industrial activities, (2) agricultural practices and forest extent, (3) climatic variables, (4) livestock rearing, and (5) principal polluting sectors. The cities were subsequently evaluated and categorized based on these risk components, incorporating policy interventions and administrative performance within each region. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or polyester) is a commonly used plastic and also contributes to the majority of plastic wastes. Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor larvae) are capable of biodegrading major plastic polymers but their degrading ability for PET has not been characterized based on polymer chain size molecular size, gut microbiome, metabolome and transcriptome. We verified biodegradation of commercial PET by T. molitor larvae in a previous report. Here, we reported that biodegradation of commercial PET (M w 29.43 kDa) was further confirmed by using the δ 13 C signature as an indication of bioreaction, which was increased from - 27.50‰ to - 26.05‰. Under antibiotic suppression of gut microbes, the PET was still depolymerized, indicating that the host digestive enzymes could degrade PET independently. Biodegradation of high purity PET with low, medium, and high molecular weights (MW), i.e., M w values of 1.10, 27.10, and 63.50 kDa with crystallinity 53.66%, 33.43%, and 4.25%, respectively, showed a mass reduction of > 95%, 86%, and 74% via broad depolymerization. Microbiome analyses indicated that PET diets shifted gut microbiota to three distinct structures, depending on the low, medium, and high MW. Metagenome sequencing, transcriptomic, and metabolic analyses indicated symbiotic biodegradation of PET by the host and gut microbiota. After PET was fed, the host's genes encoding degradation enzymes were upregulated, including genes encoding oxidizing, hydrolyzing, and non-specific CYP450 enzymes. Gut bacterial genes for biodegrading intermediates and nitrogen fixation also upregulated. Waste activated sludge (WAS) as one of the major pollutants with a significant annual production, has garnered significant attention regarding its treatment and utilization. If improperly discharged, it not only caused environmental pollution but also led to the wastage of valuable resources. In this study, the microalgae growth and lipid accumulation using waste activated sludge extracts (WASE) under different temperature conditions were investigated. The highest lipid content (59.13%) and lipid productivity (80.41 mg L -1 d -1 ) were obtained at cultivation temperatures of 10 and 25 °C, respectively. It was found that microalgae can effectively utilize TN/TP/NH 4 + -N and other nutrients of WASE. The highest utilization rates of TP, TN and NH 4 + -N were achieved at a cultivation temperature of 10 °C, reaching 84.97, 77.49 and 92.32%, respectively. The algal fatty acids had carbon chains predominantly ranging from C14 to C18, making them suitable for biodiesel production. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics revealed up-regulation of genes associated with triglyceride assembly, the antioxidant system of algal cells, and cellular autophagy, as well as the accumulation of metabolites related to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and lipids. A coupling technology for lipid production and adsorption of rare earth elements (REEs) using microalgae was studied in this work. The microalgae cell growth, lipid production, biochemical parameters and lipid profiles were investigated under different REEs (Ce 3+ , Gd 3+ and La 3+ ). The results showed that the maximum lipid production was achieved at different concentrations of REEs, with lipid productivities of 300.44, 386.84 and 292.19 mg L -1 d -1 under treatment conditions of 100 μg L -1 Ce 3+ , 250 μg L -1 Gd 3+ and 1 mg L -1 La 3+ , respectively. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency of Ce 3+ , Gd 3+ and La 3+ exceeded 96.58 %, 93.06 % and 91.3 % at concentrations of 25-1000 μg L -1 , 100-500 μg L -1 and 0.25-1 mg L -1 , respectively. In addition, algal cells were able to adsorb 66.2 % of 100 μg L -1 Ce 3+ , 48.4 % of 250 μg L -1 Gd 3+ and 59.9 % of 1 mg L -1 La 3+ . The combination of extracellular polysaccharide and algal cell wall could adsorb 25.2 % of 100 μg L -1 Ce 3+ , 44.5 % of 250 μg L -1 Gd 3+ and 30.5 % of 1 mg L -1 La 3+ , respectively. These findings indicated that microalgae predominantly adsorbed REEs through the intracellular pathway. This study elucidates the mechanism of effective lipid accumulation and adsorption of REEs by microalgae under REEs stress conditions. The addition of biochar resulted in a 31.5 % to 44.6 % increase in decolorization efficiency and favorable decolorization stability. Biochar promoted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, especially humic-like and fulvic-like substances. Additionally, biochar enhanced the electron transfer capacity of anaerobic sludge and facilitated surface attachment of microbial cells. 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis indicated that biochar reduced microbial species diversity, enriching fermentative bacteria such as Trichococcus. Finally, a machine learning model was employed to establish a predictive model for biochar characteristics and decolorization efficiency. Biochar electrical conductivity, H/C ratio, and O/C ratio had the most significant impact on RR2 anaerobic decolorization efficiency. Utilizing H 2 -assisted ex-situ biogas upgrading and acetate recovery holds great promise for achieving high value utilization of biogas. However, it faces a significant challenge due to acetate's high solubility and limited economic value. To address this challenge, we propose an innovative strategy for simultaneous upgrading of biogas and the production of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). A series of batch tests evaluated the strategy's efficiency under varying initial gas ratios (v/v) of H 2 , CH 4 , CO 2 , along with varying ethanol concentrations. The results identified the optimal conditions as initial gas ratios of 3H 2 :3CH 4 :2CO 2 and an ethanol concentration of 241.2 mmol L -1 , leading to maximum CH 4 purity (97.2 %), MCFAs yield (54.2 ± 2.1 mmol L -1 ), and MCFAs carbon-flow distribution (62.3 %). Additionally, an analysis of the microbial community's response to varying conditions highlighted the crucial roles played by microorganisms such as Clostridium, Proteiniphilum, Sporanaerobacter, and Bacteroides in synergistically assimilating H 2 and CO 2 for MCFAs production. Furthermore, a 160-day continuous operation using a dual-membrane aerated biofilm reactor (dMBfR) was conducted. Remarkable achievements were made at a hydraulic retention time of 2 days, including an upgraded CH 4 content of 96.4 ± 0.3 %, ethanol utilization ratio (URethanol) of 95.7 %, MCFAs production rate of 28.8 ± 0.3 mmol L -1 d -1 , and MCFAs carbon-flow distribution of 70 ± 0.8 %. The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from biogas into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) represents an eco-friendly resource recovery approach to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and combat global climate change. This study presented the novel concept of integrated resource recovery by coupling biogas upgrading and MCFAs production for the first time. Initially, the impact of different initial ethanol concentrations on chain elongation was examined, determining that an ethanol concentration of 160 mmol/L maximized MCFAs yield at 45.7 mmol/L. Subsequently, using this optimal ethanol supply, the integrated strategy was implemented by connecting two bioreactors in series and maintaining continuous operation for 160-day. The results were noteworthy: upgraded bio-methane purity reached 97.6 %, MCFAs production rate and carbon-flow distribution reached 24.5 mmol/L d -1 and 76.1 %, respectively. Old-fashioned wastewater treatments for nitrogen depend on heterotrophic denitrification process. It would utilize extra organic carbon source as electron donors when the C/N of domestic wastewater was too low to ensure heterotrophic denitrification process. It would lead to non-compliance with carbon reduction targets and impose an economic burden on wastewater treatment. Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO), which could utilize methane serving as electron donors to replace traditional organic carbon (methanol or sodium acetate), supplies a novel approach for wastewater treatment. As the primary component of biogas, methane is an inexpensive carbon source. With anaerobic digestion becoming increasingly popular for sludge reduction in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), efficient biogas utilization through DAMO can offer an environmentally friendly option for in-situ biogas recycling. Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (n-DAMO) is a recently discovered process, which provides a sustainable perspective for simultaneous nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas emission (GHG) mitigation by using methane as an electron donor for denitrification. However, the engineering roadmap of the n-DAMO process is still unclear. This work constitutes a state-of-the-art review on the classical and most recently discovered metabolic mechanisms of the n-DAMO process. The versatile combinations of the n-DAMO process with nitrification, nitritation, and partial nitritation for nitrogen removal are also clearly presented and discussed. Additionally, the recent advances in bioreactor development are systematically reviewed and evaluated comprehensively in terms of methane supply, biomass retention, membrane requirement, startup time, reactor performance, and limitations. The key issues including enrichment and operation strategy for the scaling up of n-DAMO-based processes are also critically addressed. Moreover, the challenges inherent to implementing the n-DAMO process in practical applications, including application scenario recognition, GHG emission mitigation, and operation under realistic conditions, are highlighted. Finally, prospects as well as opportunities for future research are proposed. Overall, this review provides a roadmap for potential applications and further development of the n-DAMO process in the field of wastewater treatment.

This study proposes a new model in which ethanol and acetate produced by dark fermentation are processed by Clostridium kluyveri for chain elongation to produce caproate with an addition of biochar prepared from cornstalk residues after acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis (AERBC) in the dark fermentation and chain elongation processes. The results show a 6-25% increase in hydrogen production in dark fermentation with adding AERBC, and the maximum concentration of caproate in the new model reached 1740 mg/L, 61% higher than that in the control group. In addition, caproate was obtained by dark fermentation, using liquid metabolites as substrates with an initial pH range of 6.5-7.5. Finally, the electron balance and electron transfer efficiency in the new model were analyzed, and the role of AERBC in dark fermentation and chain elongation was investigated. Waterborne viral epidemics are a major threat to public health. Increasing interest in wastewater reclamation highlights the importance of understanding the health risks associated with potential microbial hazards, particularly for reused water in direct contact with humans. This study focused on identifying viral epidemic patterns in municipal wastewater reused for recreational applications based on long-term, spatially explicit global literature data during 2000-2021, and modelled human health risks from multiple exposure pathways using a well-established quantitative microbial risk assessment methodology. Global median viral loads in municipal wastewater ranged from 7.92 × 10 4 to 1.4 × 10 6  GC L -1 in the following ascending order: human adenovirus (HAdV), norovirus (NoV) GII, enterovirus (EV), NoV GI, rotavirus (RV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Following secondary or tertiary wastewater treatment, NoV GI, NoV GII, EV, and RV showed a relatively higher and more stable log reduction value with medians all above 0.8 (84%), whereas SARS-CoV-2 and HAdV showed a relatively lower reduction, with medians ranging from 0.33 (53%) to 0.55 (72%). A subsequent disinfection process effectively enhanced viral removal to over 0.89-log (87%). The predicted event probability of virus-related gastrointestinal illness and acute febrile respiratory illnesses in reclaimed recreational water exceeded the World Health Organization recommended recreational risk benchmark (5% and 1.9%, respectively). Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) combined biological system was a promising technology for treating antibiotic wastewater. However, how pretreatment influence antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) propagation remains largely elusive, especially the produced by-products (antibiotic residues and sulfate) are often ignored. Herein, we investigated the effects of zero valent iron/persulfate pretreatment on ARGs in bioreactors treating sulfadiazine wastewater. Results showed absolute and relative abundance of ARGs reduced by 59.8%- 81.9% and 9.1%- 52.9% after pretreatments. The effect of 90-min pretreatment was better than that of the 30-min. The ARGs reduction was due to decreased antibiotic residues and stimulated sulfate assimilation. Reduced antibiotic residues was a major factor in ARGs attenuation, which could suppress oxidative stress, inhibit mobile genetic elements emergence and resistant strains proliferation. The presence of sulfate in influent supplemented microbial sulfur sources and facilitated the in-situ synthesis of antioxidant cysteine through sulfate assimilation, which drove ARGs attenuation by alleviating oxidative stress. Granular sludge combined n-DAMO and Anammox (n-D/A) is an energy-efficient biotechnique for the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and dissolved methane from wastewater. However, the lack of knowledge so far about the metabolic interactions between n-DAMO and Anammox in response to operation condition in granular sludge restrains the development of this biotechnology. To address this gap, three independent membrane granular sludge reactors (MGSRs) were designed to carry out the granule-based n-D/A process under different conditions. We provided the first deep insights into the metabolic interactions between n-DAMO and Anammox in granular sludge via combined metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses. Our study unveiled a clear population shift of n-DAMO community from Candidatus Methanoperedens to Candidatus Methylomirabilis from sidestream to mainstream. Candidatus Methanoperedens with relative abundance of 25.2% played the major role in nitrate reduction and methane oxidation under sidestream condition, indicated by the high expression activities of mcrA and narG. Candidatus Methylomirabilis dominated the microbial community under mainstream condition with relative abundance of 32.1%, supported by the high expression activities of pmoA and hao. Furthermore, a transition of Anammox population from Candidatus Kuenenia to Candidatus Brocadia was also observed from sidestream to mainstream. Candidatus Kuenenia and Candidatus Brocadia jointly contributed to the primary anaerobic ammonium oxidation suggested by the high expression value of hdh and hzs. Candidatus Methylomirabilis was speculated to perform ammonium oxidation mediated by pMMO under mainstream condition. Sulfate-reducing ammonium oxidation (sulfammox), a novel and promising process that has emerged in recent years, is essential to nitrogen and sulfur cycles and offers significant potential for the elimination of ammonium and sulfate. This review discussed the development of sulfammox process, the mechanism, characteristics of microbes, potential influencing factors, applicable bioreactors, and proposed the research needs and future perspective. The sulfammox process could be affected by many factors, such as the NH 4 + /SO 4 2- ratio, carbon source, pH, and temperature. However, these potential influencing factors were only obtained based on what has been seen in papers studying related processes such as denitrification, sulfate-reduction, etc., and have to be further tested in bioreactors carrying out the sulfammox process in the future. Currently, sulfammox is predominantly used in granular activated carbon anaerobic fluidized beds, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors, anaerobic expanded granular bed reactors, rotating biological contact reactors, and moving bed biofilm reactors. In the future, the operating parameters of sulfammox should be further optimized to improve the processing performance, and the system can be further scaled up for actual wastewater treatment. Microplastics (MPs) are a significant component of global pollution and cause widespread concern, particularly in wastewater treatment plants. While understanding the impact of MPs on nutrient removal and potential metabolism in biofilm systems is limited. This work investigated the impact of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on the performance of biofilm systems. The results revealed that at concentrations of 100 and 1000 μg/L, both PS and PET had almost no effect on the removal of ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand, but reduced the removal of total nitrogen by 7.40-16.6%. PS and PET caused cell and membrane damage, as evidenced by increases in reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase to 136-355% and 144-207% of the control group. Besides, metagenomic analysis demonstrated both PS and PET changed the microbial structure and caused functional differences. Some important genes in nitrite oxidation (e.g. nxrA), denitrification (e.g. narB, nirABD, norB, and nosZ), and electron production process (e.g. mqo, sdh, and mdh) were restrained, meanwhile, species contribution to nitrogen-conversion genes was altered, therefore disturbing nitrogen-conversion metabolism. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a mass-produced fossil-based plastic polymer that contributes to catastrophic levels of plastic pollution. Here we demonstrated that Tenebrio molitor (mealworms) was capable of rapidly biodegrading two commercial PET resins (microplastics) with respective weight-average molecular weight (M w ) of 39.33 and 29.43 kDa and crystallinity of 22.8 ± 3.06% and 18 ± 2.25%, resulting in an average mass reduction of 71.03% and 73.28% after passage of their digestive tract, and respective decrease by 9.22% and 11.36% in M w of residual PET polymer in egested frass. Sequencing of 16 S rRNA gene amplicons of gut microbial communities showed that dominant bacterial genera were enriched and associated with PET degradation. Also, PICRUSt prediction exhibited that oxidases (monooxygenases and dioxygenases), hydrolases (cutinase, carboxylesterase and chitinase), and PET metabolic enzymes, and chemotaxis related functions were up-regulated in the PET-fed larvae. Additionally, metabolite analyses revealed that PET uptake caused alterations of stress response and plastic degradation related pathways, and lipid metabolism pathways in the T. molitor larvae could be reprogrammed when the larvae fed on PET. Layered V 10 O 24 · n H 2 O with a large interlayer spacing of 14 Å is hydrothermally synthesized and used as a cathode for potassium-ion batteries. It exhibits a capacity of 110 mA h g -1 with a capacity retention of 99.2% over 700 cycles. Its storage mechanism is identified as pseudo-capacitive intercalation.

Biological biogas upgrading has been well-proven to be a promising approach for renewable bioenergy recovery, but hydrogen (H 2 )-assisted ex-situ biogas upgrading is hindered by a large solubility discrepancy between H 2 and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). This study established a new dual-membrane aerated biofilm reactor (dMBfR) to improve the upgrading efficiency. Results showed that dMBfR operated at 1.25 atm H 2 partial pressure, 1.5 atm biogas partial pressure, and 1.0 d hydraulic retention time could significantly improve the efficiency. The maximum methane purity of 97.6%, acetate production rate of 34.5 mmol L -1 d -1 , and H 2 and CO 2 utilization ratios of 96.5% and 96.3% were achieved. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a significant environmental concern due to its adverse effects and ecological risks. SMX elimination in aquatic environments via photocatalysis presents a viable solution, given its high oxidation potential. However, such a solution remains controversial, primarily due to a lack of selectivity. Here we introduce a molecularly imprinted TiO 2 @Fe 2 O 3 @g-C 3 N 4 (MFTC) photocatalyst designed for the selective degradation of SMX. To assess MFTC's selectivity, we applied it to degrade synthetic wastewater containing SMX alongside interfering species sulfadiazine (SDZ), ibuprofen (IBU), and bisphenol A (BPA). The results demonstrated a selective degradation efficiency rate of 96.8%, nearly twice that of competing pollutants. The molecularly imprinted sites within the catalyst played a crucial role by selectively capturing SMX and enhancing its adsorption, thereby improving catalytic efficiency. The degradation process involved •OH and •O 2 - free radicals, with a newly proposed double Z-scheme mechanism and potential pathway for SMX degradation by the MFTC photocatalytic system. Leather wastewater (LW) effluent is characterized by complex organic matter, high salinity, and poor biodegradability. To meet the discharge standards, LW effluent is often mixed with municipal wastewater (MW) before being treated at a leather industrial park wastewater treatment plant (LIPWWTP). However, whether this method efficiently removes the dissolved organic matter (DOM) from LW effluent (LWDOM) remains debatable. In this study, the transformation of DOM during full-scale treatment was revealed using spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. LWDOM exhibited higher aromaticity and lower molecular weight than DOM in MW (MWDOM). The DOM properties in mixed wastewater (MixW) were similar to those in LWDOM and MWDOM. The MixW was treated using a flocculation/primary sedimentation tank (FL 1 /PST), anoxic/oxic (A/O) process, secondary sedimentation tank (SST), flocculation/sedimentation tank, denitrification filter (FL 2 /ST-DNF), and an ozonation contact reactor (O 3 ). The FL 1 /PST unit preferentially removed the peptide-like compounds. The A/O-SST units had the highest removal efficiencies for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (61.34 %) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) (52.2 %). The FL 2 /ST-DNF treatment removed the lignin-like compounds. The final treatment showed poor DOM mineralization efficiency. The correlation between water quality indices, spectral indices, and molecular-level parameters indicated that lignin-like compounds were strongly correlated with spectral indices and CHOS compounds considerably contributed to the SCOD and DOC. Although the effluent SCOD met the discharge standard, some refractory DOM from LW remained in the effluent. A highly efficient aerobic denitrifying microbe was isolated from sewage sludge by using a denitrifier enrichment strategy based on decreasing carbon content. The microbe was identified as Pseudomonas mendocina HITSZ-D1 (hereafter, D1). Investigation of the conditions under which D1 grew and denitrified revealed that it performed good growth and nitrate removal performance under a wide range of conditions. In particular, D1 rapidly removed all types of inorganic nitrogen without accumulation of the intermediate products nitrite and nitrous oxide. Overall, D1 showed a total nitrogen removal efficiency >96% at a C/N ratio of 8. The biotransformation modes and fates of three typical types of inorganic nitrogen were also assessed. Moreover, D1 had significantly higher denitrification efficiency and enzyme activities than other aerobic denitrifying microbes (Paracoccus denitrificans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Pseudomonas putida). Thallium (Tl + ) is a trace metal with extreme toxicity and is highly soluble in water, posing a great risk to ecological and human safety. This work aimed to investigate the role played by Tl + in regulating lipid accumulation in microalgae and the removal efficiency of Tl + . The effect of Tl + on the cell growth, lipid production and Tl + removal efficiency of Parachlorella kessleri R-3 was studied. Low concentrations of Tl + had no significant effect on the biomass of microalgae. When the Tl + concentration exceeded 5 μg L -1 , the biomass of microalgae showed significant decrease. The highest lipid content of 63.65% and lipid productivity of 334.55 mg L -1 d -1 were obtained in microalgae treated with 10 and 5 μg L -1 Tl + , respectively. Microalgae can efficiently remove Tl + and the Tl + removal efficiency can reach 100% at Tl + concentrations of 0-25 μg L -1 . The maximum nitric oxide (NO) level of 470.48 fluorescence intensity (1 × 10 6 cells) -1 and glutathione (GSH) content of 343.51 nmol g -1 (fresh alga) were obtained under 5 μg L -1 Tl + stress conditions. Furthermore, the exogenous donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) supplemented with NO was induced in microalgae to obtain a high lipid content (59.99%), lipid productivity (397.99 mg L -1 d -1 ) and GSH content (430.22 nmol g -1 (fresh alga)). The corresponding analysis results indicated that NO could participate in the signal transduction pathway through modulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling to activate the antioxidant system by increasing the GSH content to eliminate oxidative damage induced by Tl + stress. In addition, NO regulation of ROS signaling may enhance transcription factors associated with lipid synthesis, which stimulates the expression of genes related to lipid synthesis, leading to increased lipid biosynthesis in microalgae. Moreover, it was found that the change in Tl + had little effect on the fatty acid components and biodiesel properties. In recent years, microplastics/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) have received substantial attention worldwide owing to their wide applications, persistence, and potential risks. Wetland systems are considered to be an important "sink" for MPs/NPs, which can have potential ecological and environmental effects on the ecosystem. This paper provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the sources and characteristics of MPs/NPs in wetland ecosystems, together with a detailed analysis of MP/NP removal and associated mechanisms in wetland systems. In addition, the eco-toxicological effects of MPs/NPs in wetland ecosystems, including plant, animal, and microbial responses, were reviewed with a focus on changes in the microbial community relevant to pollutant removal. The effects of MPs/NPs exposure on conventional pollutant removal by wetland systems and their greenhouse gas emissions are also discussed. Finally, current knowledge gaps and future recommendations are presented, including the ecological impact of exposure to various MPs/NPs on wetland ecosystems and the ecological risks of MPs/NPs associated with the migration of different contaminants and antibiotic resistance genes. Azo dyes are significant organic pollutants known for their adverse effects on humans and aquatic life. In this study, anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) immobilized on biochar (BC) was employed as a novel carrier in up-flow anaerobic fixed-bed reactors to induce specific biofilm formation and promote the biotransformation efficiency of azo dyes. Novel carrier-packed reactor 1 (R1) and BC-packed reactor 2 (R2) were used to treat red reactive 2 (RR2) under continuous operation for 175 days. The decolorization rates of R1 and R2 were 96-83% and 91-73%, respectively. The physicochemical characteristics and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the biofilm revealed a more stable structure in R1. Furthermore, the microbial community in R1 interacted more closely with each other and contained more keystone genera. Side-stream reactor (SSR), as an in-situ sludge reduction process with high sludge reduction efficiency (SRE) and less negative impact on effluent, has been widely researched. In order to reduce cost and promote large-scale application, the anaerobic/anoxic/micro-aerobic/oxic bioreactor coupled with micro-aerobic SSR (AAMOM) was used to investigate nutrient removal and SRE under short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of SSR. When HRT of SSR was 4 h, AAMOM system achieved 30.41% SRE, while maintaining carbon and nitrogen removal efficiency. Micro-aerobic in mainstream accelerated the hydrolysis of particulate organic matter (POM) and promoted denitrification. Micro-aerobic in side-stream increased cell lysis and ATP dissipation, thus increasing SRE. Microbial community structure indicated that the cooperative interactions among hydrolytic, slow growing, predatory and fermentation bacteria played key roles in improving SRE. One of the most prevalent heavy metals found in rural sewage is Zn(II), while its effect on simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) remains unclear. In this work, the responses of SNDPR performance to long-term Zn(II) stress were investigated in a cross-flow honeycomb bionic carrier biofilm system. The results indicated that Zn(II) stress at 1 and 5 mg L -1 could increase nitrogen removal. Maximum ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and phosphorus removal efficiencies of up to 88.54%, 83.19%, and 83.65% were obtained at Zn(II) concentration of 5 mg L -1 . The functional genes, such as archaeal amoA, bacterial amoA, NarG, NirS, NapA, and NirK, also reached the highest value at 5 mg L -1 Zn(II), with the absolute abundances of 7.73 × 10 5 , 1.57 × 10 6 , 6.68 × 10 8 , 1.05 × 10 9 , 1.79 × 10 8 , and 2.09 × 10 8 copies·g -1 dry weight, respectively. The neutral community model demonstrated that deterministic selection was responsible for the system's microbial community assembly. Additionally, response regimes with extracellular polymeric substances and cooperation among microorganisms facilitated the stability of the reactor effluent. An important way to promote the environmental industry's goal of carbon reduction is to promote the recycling of resources. Membrane separation technology has unique advantages in resource recovery and advanced treatment of industrial wastewater. However, the great promise of traditional organic membrane is hampered by challenges associated with organic solvent tolerance, lack of oxidation resistance, and serious membrane fouling control. Moreover, the high concentrations of organic matter and inorganic salts in the membrane filtration concentrate also hinder the wider application of the membrane separation technology. The emerging cost-effective graphene oxide (GO)-based membrane with excellent resistance to organic solvents and oxidants, more hydrophilicity, lower membrane fouling, better separation performance has been expected to contribute more in industrial wastewater treatment. Herein, we provide comprehensive insights into the preparation and characteristic of GO membranes, as well as current research status and problems related to its future application in industrial wastewater treatment. In this study, the influence of Fe 3+ on N removal, microbial assembly, and species interactions in a biofilm system was determined. The results showed that maximum efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (P), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were achieved using 10 mg/L Fe 3+ , reaching values of 100, 78.85, 100, and 95.8%, respectively, whereas at concentrations of 15 and 30 mg/L Fe 3+ suppressed the removal of NH 4 + -N, TN, and COD. In terms of absolute abundance, the expression of bacterial amoA , narG , nirK , and napA was maximal in the presence of 10 mg/L Fe 3+ (9.18 × 10 5 , 8.58 × 10 8 , 1.09 × 10 8 , and 1.07 × 10 9 copies/g dry weight, respectively). Irrespective of Fe 3+ concentrations, the P removal efficiency remained at almost 100%. Candidatus &#95;Competibacter (10.26-23.32%) was identified as the most abundant bacterial genus within the system. Determinism (50%) and stochasticity (50%) contributed equally to microbial community assembly. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that in the presence of Fe 3+ , 60.94% of OTUs in the biofilm system exhibited positive interactions, whereas 39.06% exhibited negative interactions. Within the OTU-based co-occurrence network, fourteen species were identified as key microbes. The stability of the system was found to be predominantly shaped by microbial cooperation, complemented by competition for resources or niche incompatibility. Motivated by the carbon neutrality target, strategic planning for a low-carbon transition of sludge treatment and disposal in China is challenging due to the unpredictability of technical, regional, socioeconomic, and political factors affecting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study combines the use of a Life Cycle Assessment and the Patient Rule Induction Method, accounting for possibilities that could achieve net-zero carbon emissions by exploring multiple plausible future profiles of sludge treatment and disposal. Results show that reducing sludge landfill and increasing anaerobic digestion are effective methods to facilitate GHG reduction. Achieving carbon neutrality is closely linked to developing a cleaner electricity mix. Based on a cascaded scenario analysis considering regional differences for 31 Chinese provinces, results demonstrated a maximum cumulative reduction potential of 371 Mt CO 2 equivalents from 2020 to 2050, equal to 59.84% of the business-as-usual scenario. Together with GHG reductions, terrestrial acidification and ecotoxicity as well as freshwater ecotoxicity are synergistically reduced. However, the shifting environmental burden results in freshwater eutrophication, human toxicity, marine ecotoxicity, marine eutrophication, and photochemical oxidant formation. This study presents a novel method for systematically identifying possible future development paths toward carbon neutrality. In this study, a new microalgal strain, Asterarcys quadricellulare R-56, was isolated for biomass and lipid production. The effects of carbon and nitrogen sources and initial pH on the cell growth and lipid accumulation of strain R-56 were investigated. At 10 g L -1 glucose, 0.6 g L -1 sodium nitrate, and pH 7, the highest biomass of 4.18 g L -1 and lipid content of 43.66% were obtained. Microalgae had a broad pH tolerance in the range of 5-11, and the pH of the culture medium was close to neutral at the end of cultivation. The maximum contents of chlorophyll, carbohydrate, and protein under the recommended culture conditions were 19.47 mg mL -1 , 21.80%, and 29.94%, respectively. Palmitic and palmitoleic acid contents in strain R-56 accounted for as high as 83.73% of total fatty acids.
