The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art facility for studying the strong force, is expected to begin commissioning its first experiments in 2028. This is an opportune time for artificial intelligence (AI) to be included from the start at this facility and in all phases that lead up to the experiments. The second annual workshop organized by the AI4EIC working group, which recently took place, centered on exploring all current and prospective application areas of AI for the EIC. This workshop is not only beneficial for the EIC, but also provides valuable insights for the newly established ePIC collaboration at EIC. This paper summarizes the different activities and R&D projects covered across the sessions of the workshop and provides an overview of the goals, approaches and strategies regarding AI/ML in the EIC community, as well as cutting-edge techniques currently studied in other experiments., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, AI4EIC workshop, tutorials and hackathon

A dimensionless collisionality scan has been performed in H-mode plasmas on DIII-D tokamak, with detailed measurements of intermediate-to-high wavenumber turbulence using Doppler backscattering systems. It is found that the shorter wavelength turbulence develops into spatially asymmetric turbulent structures with a long-radial-range correlation (LRRC) in the mid-radius region of high-collisionality discharges. Linear \textsc{cgyro} simulations indicate that the underlying turbulence is likely driven by the electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) mode. The LRRC transport events are highly intermittent and show a power spectrum of \(S_{\tilde{n}}(k_\perp) \propto k^{-1}_\perp\) for density fluctuations, which is often associated with self-organized criticality. The magnitude and the radial scale of those turbulent structures increase significantly when the $E_{r}\times B$ mean flow shearing rate decreases. The enhanced LRRC transport events appear to be correlated with the degraded energy confinement time. The emergence of such LRRC transport events may serve as a candidate explanation for the degrading nature of \emph{H}-mode core plasma confinement at high collisionality.

X-ray Compton spectroscopy is one of the few direct probes of the electron momentum distribution of bulk materials in ambient and operando environments. We report high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering experiments with high momentum and energy transfer performed at a storage-ring-based high-energy X-ray light source facility using an X-ray microcalorimeter detector. Compton profiles were measured for lithium and cobalt oxide powders relevant to lithium-ion battery research. Spectroscopic analysis of the measured Compton profiles shows high-sensitivity to the low-Z elements and oxidation states. The lineshape analysis of the measured Compton profiles in comparison with computed Hartree-Fock profiles is limited by the resolution of the energy-resolving semiconductor detector. We have characterized an X-ray transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter detector for high-resolution Compton scattering experiments using a bending magnet source at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) with a double crystal monochromator providing monochromatic photon energies near 27.5 keV. The momentum resolution below 0.16 atomic units was measured yielding an improvement of more than a factor of 7 over a state-of-the-art silicon drift detector for the same scattering geometry. Furthermore, the lineshapes of narrow valence and broad core electron profiles of sealed lithium metal were clearly resolved using an X-ray microcalorimeter detector compared to smeared and broadened lineshapes observed when using a silicon drift detector. We report on the observation of spatially asymmetric turbulent structures with a long radial correlation length in the core of high-collisionality H-mode plasmas on DIII-D tokamak. These turbulent structures develop from shorter wavelength turbulence and have a radially elongated structure. The envelope of turbulence spans a broad radial range in the mid-radius region, leading to streamer-like transport events. The underlying turbulence is featured by intermittency, long-term memory effect, and the characteristic spectrum of self-organized criticality. The amplitude and the radial scale increase substantially when the shearing rate of the mean flow is reduced below the turbulent scattering rate. The enhanced LRRC transport events are accompanied by apparent degradation of normalized energy confinement time. These findings constitute the first experimental observation of long-radial-range turbulent transport events in high-collisionality H-mode plasmas, and demonstrate the role of mean shear flows in the formation and propagation of turbulence with long-radial-range correlation.

Kagome-lattice magnets $R$Mn$_6$Sn$_6$ recently emerged as a new platform to exploit the interplay between magnetism and topological electronic states. Some of the most exciting features of this family are the dramatic dependence of the easy magnetization direction on the rare-earth specie and the kagome geometry of the Mn planes that in principle can generate flat bands and Dirac points; gapping of the Dirac points by spin-orbit coupling has been suggested recently to be responsible for the observed anomalous Hall response in the member TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$. In this paper, we address both issues with ab initio calculations. We have discovered the significant role played by higher-order crystal-field parameters and rare-earth magnetic anisotropy constants in these systems. We demonstrate that the microscopic origin of rare-earth anisotropy can also be quantified and understood at various levels: ab initio, phenomenological, and analytical. In particular, using a simple and physically transparent analytical model, we explain, with full quantitative agreement, the evolution of anisotropy across the series. We analyze the topological properties of Mn-dominated bands and demonstrate how they emerge from the multiorbital planar kagome model. We further show that the most pronounced quasi-2D dispersion are too far removed from the Fermi level, and therefore cannot explain the observed quasi-2D anomalous Hall effect. By employing ab initio many-body approaches, we demonstrate that the exchange-correlation effects for itinerant Mn-$d$ electrons do not significantly alter the obtained electronic and magnetic structure. Therefore, we conclude that, contrary to previous claims, the most pronounced 2D kagome-derived topological band features bear little relevance to transport in $R$Mn$_6$Sn$_6$, albeit they may possibly be brought to focus by electron or hole doping., Comment: 14+11 pages, 10+7 figures

A linear response, local model for the DBS amplitude applied to gyrokinetic simulations shows that radial correlation Doppler reflectometry measurements (RCDR, Schirmer et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 49 1019 (2007)) are not sensitive to the average turbulence radial correlation length, but to a correlation length that depends on the binormal wavenumber $k_\perp$ selected by the Doppler backscattering (DBS) signal. Nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations show that the turbulence naturally exhibits a non-separable power law spectrum in wavenumber space, leading to a power law dependence of the radial correlation length with binormal wavenumber $l_r \sim C k_\perp^{-\alpha} (\alpha \approx 1)$ which agrees with the inverse proportionality relationship between the measured $l_r$ and $k_\perp $ in experiments (Fernandez-Marina et al., Nucl. Fusion 54 072001 (2014)). This offers the possibility of characterizing the eddy aspect ratio in the perpendicular plane to the magnetic field and motivates future use of a non-separable turbulent spectrum to quantitatively interpret RCDR and potentially other turbulence diagnostics. The radial correlation length is only measurable when the radial resolution at the cutoff location $W_n$ satisfies $W_n \ll l_r$, while the measurement becomes dominated by $W_n$ for $W_n \gg l_r$. This suggests that $l_r$ is likely inaccessible for electron-scale DBS measurements ($k_\perp\rho_s > 1$). For computational acoustics, schemes need to have low-dispersion and low-dissipation properties in order to capture the amplitude and phase of the wave correctly. To improve the spectral properties of the scheme, the authors have previously proposed a scale sensor to automatically adjust the numerical dissipation. In consequence, a fourth-order finite difference scheme with minimized dispersion and adaptive dissipation (MDAD) has been proposed [1]. In this study, we further investigate this method for the high-fidelity numerical simulation of the acoustic problems and a new dispersion control method is proposed which is different from the traditional dispersion relation preserving (DRP) approach. Firstly, the scale sensor, which quantifies the local length scale of the solution as the effective scaled wavenumber, is modified for better performance on composite waves. Then the scale sensor is applied to control both the dispersion and dissipation of the scheme. The relationships between the dispersion/dissipation parameter and the effective scaled wavenumber are analytically and artificially constructed respectively. Thus, a fourth-order finite difference scheme with accurate dispersion and adaptive dissipation (ADAD) is constructed. The approximate dispersion relation (ADR) shows that the ADAD scheme achieves accurate dispersion property at k < 2.5. The dissipation is negligible at low wave number and gradually increases after k = 1 to suppress non-physical oscillations. Several benchmark cases of computational acoustics are presented to verify the high resolution of the proposed scheme compared with the conventional spectral optimized schemes.

The dispersion and dissipation properties of a scheme are important to realize high-fidelity simulations of the compressible flow, especially the cases with broadband length scales. It has been recognized that the minimization of dispersion error is an effective method to improve the precision. In addition, the proper dissipation of a scheme is important to restrain the non-physics oscillations and reserve details of flows simultaneously. The authors have previously proposed a scale sensor to adjust the numerical dissipation of a fourth-order finite difference scheme according to the local scale of the flow. In this paper, the scale sensor is further modified for the sixth-order finite difference scheme to achieve minimized dispersion and adaptive dissipation properties. Firstly, the scale sensor quantifies the local length scale of the numerical solution as the effective scaled wavenumber. Then, the dispersion-dissipation condition is used to construct the relationship between the dissipation/dispersion parameter and the effective scaled wavenumber. Therefore, a sixth-order finite difference scheme with minimized dispersion and adaptive dissipation (MDAD6th) is proposed. Several benchmark test cases with broadband length scales are presented to clarify the high resolution of the new scheme.

Stress-induced martensitic transformations enable metastable alloys to exhibit enhanced strain hardening capacity, leading to improved formability and toughness. As is well-known from transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels, however, the resulting martensite can limit ductility and fatigue life due to its intrinsic brittleness. In this work, we explore an alloy design strategy that utilizes stress-induced martensitic transformations but does not retain the martensite phase. This strategy is based on the introduction of superelastic nano-precipitates, which exhibit reverse transformation after initial stress-induced forward transformation. To this end, utilizing ab-initio simulations and thermodynamic calculations we designed and produced a V45Ti30Ni25 (at%) alloy. In this alloy, TiNi is present as nano-precipitates uniformly distributed within a ductile V-rich base-centered cubic (bcc) beta matrix, as well as being present as a larger matrix phase. We characterized the microstructure of the produced alloy using various scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The bulk mechanical properties of the alloy are demonstrated through tensile tests, and the reversible transformation in each of the TiNi morphologies were confirmed by in-situ TEM micro-pillar compression experiments, in-situ high-energy diffraction synchrotron cyclic tensile tests, indentation experiments, and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Conventional crystalline alloys usually possess a low atomic size difference in order to stabilize its crystalline structure. However, in this article, we report a single phase chemically complex alloy which possesses a large atomic size misfit usually unaffordable to conventional alloys. Consequently, this alloy develops a rather complex atomic-scale chemical order and a highly distorted crystalline structure. As a result, this crystalline alloy displays an unusually high elastic strain limit (~2%), about ten times of that of conventional alloys, and an extremely low internal friction (< 2E-4) at room temperature. More interestingly, this alloy firmly maintains its elastic modulus even when the testing temperature rises from room temperature to 900 K, which is unmatched by the existing alloys hitherto reported. From an application viewpoint, our discovery may open up new opportunities to design high precision devices usable even under an extreme environment.

Manipulation of the intersublattice interaction strengh (JRE-TM) in rare earth (RE)-transition metal (TM) alloys is a key issue to understand how efficiently the laser-induced angular momentum transfers from 3d to 4f spins and to have a better control of the ultrafast spin dynamics. In this work, the relationships between laser-induced demagnetization process and the intersublattice 3d-4f interaction for the GdCoFe alloys were systematically studied. The ultrafast two-stage demagnetization process could change into a one-stage mode as the angular momentum transferring channel between 3d and 4f spins is switched off, which could be modulated by JRE-TM. Furthermore, both the effective g-factor and damping constant deduced by the subsequently laser-induced magnetization precession process diverge at the angular momentum compensation point based on the ferromagnetic resonance method with the LLG equations. The results provide an alternative way to efficiently manipulate the ultrafast demagnetization time for practical applications.

Using high magnetic fields up to 60 T, we report magneto-transport and photoluminescence (PL) studies of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaN/AlGaN heterojunction grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. Transport measurements demonstrate that the quantum limit can be exceeded (Landau level filling factor $\nu < 1$), and show evidence for the $\nu =2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state. Simultaneous optical and transport measurements reveal synchronous quantum oscillations of both the PL intensity and longitudinal resistivity in the integer quantum Hall regime. PL spectra directly reveal the dispersion of occupied Landau levels in the 2DEG and therefore the electron mass. These results demonstrate the utility of high (pulsed) magnetic fields for detailed measurements of quantum phenomena in high-density 2DEGs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic reconnection underlies many explosive phenomena in the heliosphere and in laboratory plasmas. The new research capabilities in theory/simulations, observations, and laboratory experiments provide the opportunity to solve the grand scientific challenges summarized in this whitepaper. Success will require enhanced and sustained investments from relevant funding agencies, increased interagency/international partnerships, and close collaborations of the solar, heliospheric, and laboratory plasma communities. The recent reports of superconductivity in Nd1-xSrxNiO2/SrTiO3 heterostructures have reinvigorated interest in potential superconductivity of low-valence nickelates. Synthesis of Ni1+-containing compounds is notoriously difficult. In the current work, a combined sol-gel combustion and high-pressure annealing technique was employed to prepare polycrystalline perovskite Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.2). Metal nitrates and metal acetates were used as starting materials, and the latter were found to be superior to the former in terms of safety and reactivity. The Nd1-xSrxNiO3 compounds were subsequently reduced to Nd1 xSrxNiO2 using calcium hydride in a sealed, evacuated quartz tube. To understand the synthesis pathway, the evolution from NdNiO3 to NdNiO2 was monitored using in-situ synchrotron X ray diffraction during the reduction process. Electrical transport properties were consistent with an insulator-metal transition occurring between x = 0 and 0.1 for Nd1-xSrxNiO3. Superconductivity was not observed in our bulk samples of Nd1-xSrxNiO2. Neutron diffraction experiments at 3 K and 300 K were performed on Nd0.9Sr0.1NiO2, in which no magnetic Bragg reflections were observed, and the results of structural Rietveld refinement are provided., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Silicon crystallized in the usual cubic (diamond) lattice structure has dominated the electronics industry for more than half a century. However, cubic silicon (Si), germanium (Ge) and SiGe-alloys are all indirect bandgap semiconductors that cannot emit light efficiently. Accordingly, achieving efficient light emission from group-IV materials has been a holy grail in silicon technology for decades and, despite tremendous efforts, it has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate efficient light emission from direct bandgap hexagonal Ge and SiGe alloys. We measure a subnanosecond, temperature-insensitive radiative recombination lifetime and observe a similar emission yield to direct bandgap III-V semiconductors. Moreover, we demonstrate how by controlling the composition of the hexagonal SiGe alloy, the emission wavelength can be continuously tuned in a broad range, while preserving a direct bandgap. Our experimental findings are shown to be in excellent quantitative agreement with the ab initio theory. Hexagonal SiGe embodies an ideal material system to fully unite electronic and optoelectronic functionalities on a single chip, opening the way towards novel device concepts and information processing technologies., Comment: 25 pages,5 main figures, 7 supplementary figures

The phenomena of odd-parity magnetoresistance and the planar Hall effect are deeply entwined with ferromagnetism. The intrinsic magnetization of the ordered state permits these unusual and rarely observed manifestations of Onsager's theorem when time reversal symmetry is broken at zero applied field. Here we study two classes of ferromagnetic materials, rare-earth magnets with high intrinsic coercivity and antiferromagnetic pyrochlores with strongly-pinned ferromagnetic layers at domain walls, which both exhibit odd-parity magnetoresistive behavior. The peculiar angular variation of the response with respect to the relative alignments of the magnetization, magnetic field, and current reveal the two underlying microscopic mechanisms: spin-polarization-dependent scattering of a Zeeman-shifted Fermi surface and magnetoresistance driven by the anomalous velocity physics usually associated with the anomalous Hall effect.
