Abstract

The removal of zinc dross, which continuously generates and partially floats on a molten zinc surface, has been a persistent challenge during hot-dip galvanizing. Herein, a three-dimensional mathematical model coupled with the electromagnetic field, flow field and air-knife jet flow was established to investigate the flow and zinc dross removal in a zinc pot. Two types of traveling magnetic field combined modes (Mode 1 and Mode 2) were compared. The surface dross removal efficiency was introduced to evaluate the ability of the zinc flow field to compel the movement of zinc dross. The research findings indicate that, in comparison to the influence of strip steel line speed, both the electromagnetic field and air-knife jet have a more pronounced effect on altering the flow characteristics of a molten zinc at surface. The dross removal efficiency for Mode 1 is much far superior to that of Mode 2. With an increase in the driving current, the dross removal efficiency increases while the excessive driving current cannot promote the dross removal efficiency significantly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Calcium hexaluminate (CA6) porous ceramics were prepared by foaming and pore-forming agent methods, with Al2O3 and calcium aluminate cement (CAC) as raw materials and magnesium aluminum spinel hollow spheres (MASHSs) as pore-forming agent. The effects of the amount of magnesium aluminum spinel hollow sphere on the phase composition, bulk density, apparent porosity, flexural strength, microstructure, and thermal conductivity of CA6-based porous ceramics were systematically studied. The pores of such porous ceramics are mainly formed by the enhanced amount of MASHSs and the generation of CA6 phase. The results demonstrate that with the elevation of MASHSs content, the microstructure of the samples transforms from a uniform distribution of closed pores to an interconnected micro-pore arrangement. Notably, the fracture paths transition from cohesive to interfacial interactions between MASHSs. This intricate interplay culminates in a remarkable outcome – our ceramics exhibit thermal conductivities ranging from 0.210 to 0.451 W/(m/k), an augmented gas permeability of 25.96 × 10−11m2, and exceptional compressive strengths reaching up to 22.3 MPa. Overall, this study provides insights into the influence of MASHSs content on the microstructure and thermal-mechanical properties of porous materials, which may contribute to the development of advanced ceramic materials with tailored properties. Abstract

Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common form of epilepsy. However, for this type of condition, antiseizure medication is not effective for children. As miRNAs are involved in the development of temporal lobe epilepsy in children, they may provide potential therapeutic approaches for treatment. The primary aim of this study was to explore the expression and function of miR-135a-5p in children with temporal lobe epilepsy. Hippocampal slices from either normal (control) children or children with temporal lobe epilepsy were used to detect the expression of miR-135a-5p and its target gene caspase activity and apoptosis inhibitor 1. To further explore the role of miR-135a-5p in the development of temporal lobe epilepsy in children, primary hippocampal neurons from newborn rats were cultured in vitro in a magnesium-free medium to mimic the temporal lobe epilepsy condition in children. The effect of transfection of miR-135a-5p inhibitor into cells was also assessed. Apoptosis and proliferation of hippocampus cells was respectively assessed by flow cytometry or 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. The level of miR-135a-5p was significantly increased in both children with temporal lobe epilepsy and the epileptiform discharge model that employed newborn rat hippocampal neurons; whereas, the expression of caspase activity and apoptosis inhibitor 1 was downregulated by overexpression of miR-135a-5p. Moreover, miR-135a-5p mediated the pro-apoptotic effect of temporal lobe epilepsy via repressing caspase activity and apoptosis inhibitor 1 expression. Additionally, miR-135a-5p reduced cell survival in the temporal lobe epilepsy condition. Overexpression of miR-135a-5p induced cell apoptosis through inhibition of caspase activity and apoptosis inhibitor 1 expression and suppressed cell survival in children with temporal lobe epilepsy.
