The combination of surface coils and metamaterials remarkably enhance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performance for significant local staging flexibility. However, due to the coupling in between, impeded signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low-contrast resolution, further hamper the future growth in clinical MRI. In this paper, we propose a high-Q metasurface decoupling isolator fueled by topological LC loops for 1.5T surface coil MRI system, increasing the magnetic field up to fivefold at 63.8 MHz. We have employed a polarization conversion mechanism to effectively eliminate the coupling between the MRI metamaterial and the radio frequency (RF) surface transmitter-receiver coils. Furthermore, a high-Q metasurface isolator was achieved by taking advantage of bound states in the continuum (BIC) for extremely high-field MRI and spectroscopy. An equivalent physical model of the miniaturized metasurface design was put forward through LC circuit analysis. This study opens up a promising route for the easy-to-use and portable surface coil MRI scanners.

Rapid progress in nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces, with potential applications in frequency metrology, timing characterization and quantum information. However, the spectrum of nonlinear optical response was typically based upon the linear optical resonance. In this work, a wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear plasmon-MoS2 hybrid metasurface with suppression phenomenon was proposed, where multiple nonlinear signals could to be simultaneously processed and optionally tuned. A clear physical picture to depict the nonlinear plasmonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) was presented, from the perspective of both classical and quantum approaches. Particularly, beyond the ordinary plasmon-polariton effect, we numerically demonstrated a giant BIC-inspired second-order nonlinear susceptibility $10^{-5}$~$m/V$ of MoS2 in the infrared band. The novelty in our study lies in the presence of a quantum oscillator that can be adopted to both suppress and enhance the nonlinear quasi BICs. This selectable nonlinear BIC-based suppression and enhancement effect can optionally block undesired modes, resulting in narrower linewidth as well as smaller quantum decay rates, which is also promising in slow-light-associated technologies.

Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency bandgaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, $\omega_0$ and $2\omega_0$, by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain wall interface between two PhCs placed together in a mirror-symmetric manner are generated within the two frequency bandgaps. Importantly, through full-wave simulations and mode dispersion analysis, we demonstrate that tunable, bi-directional phase-matched SHG via nonlinear interaction of the valley-Hall kink modes inside the two bandgaps can be achieved. In particular, by using Stokes parameters associated to the magnetic part of the valley-Hall kink modes, we introduce a new concept, SHG directional dichroism, which is employed to characterize optical probes for sensing chiral molecules. In this paper, we use a versatile homogenization approach to model the linear and nonlinear optical response of two metasurfaces: a plasmonic metasurface consisting of a square array of graphene cruciform patches and a dielectric metasurface consisting of a rectangular array of photonic crystal (PhC) cavities in a silicon PhC slab waveguide. The former metasurface is resonant at wavelengths that are much larger than the graphene elements of the metasurface, whereas the resonance wavelengths of the latter one are comparable to the size of its resonant components. By computing and comparing the effective permittivities and nonlinear susceptibilities of the two metasurfaces, we infer some general principles regarding the conditions under which homogenization methods of metallic and dielectric metasurfaces are valid. In particular, we show that in the case of the graphene metasurface the homogenization method describes very well both its linear and nonlinear optical properties, whereas in the case of the silicon PhC metasurface the homogenization method is less accurate, especially near the optical resonances

Using a powerful homogenization technique, one- and two-dimensional graphene metasurfaces are homogenized both at the fundamental frequency (FF) and second harmonic (SH). In both cases, there is excellent agreement between the predictions of the homogenization method and those based on rigorous numerical solutions of Maxwell equations. The homogenization technique is then employed to demonstrate that, owing to a double-resonant plasmon excitation mechanism that leads to strong, simultaneous field enhancement at the FF and SH, the effective second-order susceptibility of graphene metasurfaces can be enhanced by more than three orders of magnitude as compared to the intrinsic second-order susceptibility of a graphene sheet placed on the same substrate.
