Abstract

A transient technique taking care of the longitudinal heat conduction effect is developed in which an experimentally determined T f1 ∗ (0 ∗ ) is used as the inlet fluid temperature condition. It is shown that the longitudinal conduction effect must be included for both Ntu ⩾ 3 and λ1, Ntu ⩾ 0.06 and there exists an optimum matching time interval. An empirical formula for correcting the heat conduction effect for Ntu ⩽ 20, the optimum matching time interval and an uncertainty analysis are included. The validity of this technique is confirmed by the good agreement between the test data and the theoretically predicated results.
