Objective:Nasal septum deviations are divided into six different subtypes in the literature. Because obstruction and nasal airflows in the nasal passages that these types form are different, their effects on the eustachian tube can be different. The effect of different nasal septum deviations on eustachian tube function was investigated in our study.Methods:A total of 80 patients with six different septum types and 15 healthy volunteers were included in the study. We tested eustachian tube function with P1, P2, and P3. P1 is the tympanometric measurement while resting. P2 is the tympanometric measurement after the Toynbee maneuver. P3 is the tympanometric testing after the Valsalva maneuver. To evaluate the functionality of the eustachian tube, we used the P1-P2 >10 daPa or Pmax-Pmin >15 daPa criteria. Measurements were performed before and 6 months after surgery.Results:Before surgery, there was no difference between types 1, 2, 3, and 5 and healthy volunteers in terms of eustachian tube dysfunction. Before surgery, type 4 and 6 had significant eustachian tube dysfunction compared with healthy volunteers. Type 4 and 6 showed significant improvement in the eustachian tube functions at 6th month after operation.Conclusion:According to the results of our study, applying septoplasty only to patients with type 4 and 6 nasal septum deviations before middle ear surgery would reduce unnecessary cost and increase the success of middle ear surgeries by preventing morbidities.

Objective:Systemic absorption of steroids is reasonable because of the lipophilic nature of steroids and high vascularity of the middle ear mucosa. To date, however, of the clinical trials designed to investigate this subject, to the best of our knowledge, none has been based on objective methods. This study aims to demonstrate whether the intratympanic administration of dexamethasone has any systemic effects.Methods:Seventeen patients had a total of five sessions of intratympanic dexamethasone treatment scheduled for every other day. The mean fasting blood glucose, serum cortisol, serum adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), and arterial blood pressure values of the patients were checked at each session before and after drug application.Result:There were no statistically significant differences identified between the pre- and post-treatment fasting blood glucose, serum cortisol, serum ACTH, and mean arterial blood pressure.Conclusion:This study shows that intratympanic steroids have no noticeable systemic steroidal side effects and are therefore safe to use; however, caution should be taken with patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, and they should be closely monitored.

ObjectivesIn this study we investigated the probable protective effects of thymoquinone on amikacin-induced ototoxicity in rats.MethodsThirty-two healthy rats were divided into four groups (amikacin, amikacin+thymoquinone, thymoquinone, and no treatment). Thymoquinone was fed to the rats via oral gavage in a dose of 40 mg/kg/day throughout the study period of 14 days. Amikacin was given by the intramuscular route in a dose of 600 mg/kg/day. Audiological assessment was conducted by the distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests, administered to all rats at the beginning of the study, and also on days 7 and 15. Biochemical parameters were calculated at the termination of the study to evaluate the oxidative status.ResultsThere were significant decreases in DPOAE values and significant increases in ABR thresholds of the amikacin group on days 7 and 15, as compared to the amikacin+thymoquinone group. While ABR thresholds of the amikacin group increased significantly on days 7 and 15 as compared to their initial values, there were no significant differences between the initial and the 7th and 15th day values of ABR thresholds in the amikacin+thymoquinone group. Total oxidant status and oxidative stress index values of the amikacin+thymoquinone group were significantly lower than those of the amikacin group. Total antioxidant status values of the amikacin+thymoquinone group were significantly higher than those of the amikacin group.ConclusionOur study has demonstrated that the ototoxic effect brought forth by amikacin could be overcome with the concurrent use of thymoquinone.

The advent of new diagnostic procedures has made it possible for urologists to detect chlamydial presence in genital infections. Many studies have shown chlamydial association with urethritis. However, its presence in prostatitis and epididymitis has not been clearly defined yet. In this study we investigated the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis using enzyme linked immuno assay (ELISA) antigen and antibody detection method in sexually active men with different genital infections. We have found that in 32.1% of patients with non-gonococcal urethritis chlamydial antigen is detectable. We also have been able to detect chlamydial antigen in two patients with chronic non-bacterial prostatitis, but in no patients with epididymitis. We conclude that besides its presence in urethritis, there is an association between chlamydia and chronic prostatitis. Yet, further studies are needed to delineate this association more clearly. - Thirty-five patients with testicular cancer who had scrotal contamination during or prior to their primary treatment were compared with 70 patients who had undergone radical inguinal orchiectomy. The survival curves, disease-free intervals and 2-year survival rates of the two groups did not differ significantly and we do not advocate additional aggressive surgical treatment to the scrotum and superficial inguinal lymph nodes in these patients. - The correlation between tissue localisation and serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) was studied in 20 tissue samples from 18 patients with non-seminomatous testicular tumours. Specific immunoperoxidase stains were used for tissue staining and serum measurements were made by radioimmunoassay. There was a close correlation between the tissue demonstration of AFP and HCG and elevated levels of serum markers. The cellular localisations of AFP and HCG were different and no cell stained concomitantly for both AFP and HCG. From these results and from the demonstration of tumour markers in the tissue of some patients with normal serum marker levels, it was concluded that immunocytochemical localisation of the tumour markers was more sensitive than serum measurements. Hemangiom are vascular formations in the body and develop from any site. Hemangiomas originate from skeletal muscle accounts for less than 1% of all hemangiomas. The head and neck lymphomas are localized the most common in Waldeyer ring. These are include the most common B-cell non- Hodgkin’s lymphomas. Tonsillar involvement of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma have been reported showing the average patient age of 59. Clinical findings in patients with tonsillar lymphoma involvement; sore throat, tonsillar enlargement, difficulty in swallowing, neck mass presence and visual complaints. This case, 32-year-old female patient presented with peritonsillar abscess. We performed tonsillectomy because of suspected the view. Pathologic examination revealed diffuse large cell B lymphoma has. B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma with Peritonsillar abscess and an early age presenting with tonsillar involvement was not found in another case in the literature.

Our case 67-year old female patient has neck mass, respiratory distress, chest pain symptoms. Our case mass was filling the middle line, right and left lateral of the neck, cranial extension of submandibular gland, caudal extension in mediastinuma, forming egg shell calcification, displaced to the left that laryngeal air column and trachea, elongation of the aortic arch and pulmonary clonus. Because of these features with thyroid tissue found and case discussed with literature.

- Thirty-four patients with TO carcinoma of the prostate were revived in an attempt to correlate their clinical progress with the histopathological features of the tumour at presentation. - This study was designed to examine haemoglobin F levels prior to therapy in 39 patients with testicular tumours (10 seminoma, 29 non-seminomatous tumours) and 20 controls. HbF levels were significantly increased in the group with testicular tumours (1.66 ± 0.12%) compared with normal controls (0.99 T 0.08%) (P < 0.001). Non-seminomatous tumours had more pronounced levels than seminomas (P < 0.001). No correlation was found between HbF level and stage of the disease. We suggest that HbF production could be significantly reactivated in adult patients with testicular tumours and may be a useful marker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This report describes two cases of tongue hemangioma and shows the effectiveness of photocoagulation with diode laser. A thirty-five year-old female patient with a tongue hemangioma measuring 20x30 mm was referred. The lesion had been present for 15 months and the patient reported a gradual enlargement with dental trauma. A forty-three year-old female patient had a tongue hemangioma measuring 21x25 mm. The lesion was located on the right lateral side of her tongue and had caused minor discomfort with dental trauma for the previous 8 months. Lesions were surgically photocoagulated with a diode laser applied through a glass microscope slide. The procedures lasted 15 minutes and the patients were discharged on the first postoperative day. Minimal swelling and crusty scarring occured during the first postoperative week. After one month, the operative sites healed without any residual scarring. Patient satisfaction was achieved with minimal morbidity. Lower morbidity, minimal patient discomfort and satisfactory aesthetic results are favorable for the patients. Laser photocoagulation is promising as the treatment of choice for such lesions.
