1. Origin of the laser-induced picosecond spin current across magnetization compensation in ferrimagnetic GdCo

Abstract

The optical manipulation of magnetism enabled by rare earth-transition metal ferrimagnets holds the promise of ultrafast, energy efficient spintronic technologies. This work investigates laser-induced picosecond spin currents generated by ferrimagnetic GdCo via terahertz emission spectroscopy. A suppression of the THz emission and spin current is observed at magnetization compensation when varying the temperature or alloy composition in the presence of a magnetic field. It is demonstrated that this is due to the formation of domains in the GdCo equilibrium magnetic configuration. Without an applied magnetic field, the picosecond spin current persists at the compensation point. The experimental findings support the model for THz spin current generation based on transport of hot spin-polarized electrons, which is dominated by the Co sublattice at room temperature. Only at low temperature a comparable contribution from Gd is detected but with slower dynamics. Finally, spectral analysis reveals a blueshift of the THz emission related to the formation of magnetic domains close to magnetization compensation.

2. Ultra-high spin emission from antiferromagnetic FeRh

Abstract

An antiferromagnet emits spin currents when time-reversal symmetry is broken. This is typically achieved by applying an external magnetic field below and above the spin-flop transition or by optical pumping. In this work we apply optical pump-THz emission spectroscopy to study picosecond spin pumping from metallic FeRh as a function of temperature. Intriguingly we find that in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase the laser pulse induces a large and coherent spin pumping, while not crossing into the ferromagnetic phase. With temperature and magnetic field dependent measurements combined with atomistic spin dynamics simulations we show that the antiferromagnetic spin-lattice is destabilised by the combined action of optical pumping and picosecond spin-biasing by the conduction electron population, which results in spin accumulation. We propose that the amplitude of the effect is inherent to the nature of FeRh, particularly the Rh atoms and their high spin susceptibility. We believe that the principles shown here could be used to produce more effective spin current emitters. Our results also corroborate the work of others showing that the magnetic phase transition begins on a very fast picosecond timescale, but this timescale is often hidden by measurements which are confounded by the slower domain dynamics.

Abstract

We study the spatiotemporal dynamics of ultrafast electron spin transport across nanometer-thick copper layers using broadband terahertz spectroscopy. Our analysis of temporal delays, broadening and attenuation of the spin-current pulse revealed ballistic-like propagation of the pulse peak, approaching the Fermi velocity, and diffusive features including a significant velocity dispersion. A comparison to the frequency-dependent Ficks law identified the diffusion-dominated transport regime for distances larger than 2 nm. Abstract

We use the thickness of Cu layers to control all-optical switching of magnetization in adjacent Gd$_{24}$(Fe$_9$0Co$_{10}$)$_{76}$ films. While increasing the Cu thickness from 5 to 900nm has no effect on the switching threshold, it significantly enlarges the fluence and pulse duration at which multiple domains emerge. Having shown that thermally activated multi-domain formation limits the maximum fluence and pulse duration for controlled switching, we demonstrate that continuous magnetization reversal precedes multi-domain formation in Gd$_{18}$Dy$_4$Co$_{78}$ films excited with fluences slightly larger than the multi-domain threshold.

Abstract

In this article, we present Gammapy, an open-source Python package for the analysis of astronomical $\gamma$-ray data, and illustrate the functionalities of its first long-term-support release, version 1.0. Built on the modern Python scientific ecosystem, Gammapy provides a uniform platform for reducing and modeling data from different $\gamma$-ray instruments for many analysis scenarios. Gammapy complies with several well-established data conventions in high-energy astrophysics, providing serialized data products that are interoperable with other software packages. Starting from event lists and instrument response functions, Gammapy provides functionalities to reduce these data by binning them in energy and sky coordinates. Several techniques for background estimation are implemented in the package to handle the residual hadronic background affecting $\gamma$-ray instruments. After the data are binned, the flux and morphology of one or more $\gamma$-ray sources can be estimated using Poisson maximum likelihood fitting and assuming a variety of spectral, temporal, and spatial models. Estimation of flux points, likelihood profiles, and light curves is also supported. After describing the structure of the package, we show, using publicly available $\gamma$-ray data, the capabilities of Gammapy in multiple traditional and novel $\gamma$-ray analysis scenarios, such as spectral and spectro-morphological modeling and estimations of a spectral energy distribution and a light curve. Its flexibility and power are displayed in a final multi-instrument example, where datasets from different instruments, at different stages of data reduction, are simultaneously fitted with an astrophysical flux model., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The discovery of all-optical ultra-fast deterministic magnetization switching has opened up new possibilities for manipulating magnetization in devices using femtosecond laser pulses. Previous studies on single pulse all-optical helicity-independent switching (AO-HIS) have mainly focused on perpendicularly magnetized thin films. This work presents a comprehensive study on AO-HIS for in-plane magnetized GdxCo100-x thin films. Deterministic single femtosecond laser pulse toggle magnetization switching is demonstrated in a wider concentration range (x=10% to 25%) compared to the perpendicularly magnetized counterparts with GdCo thicknesses up to 30 nm. The switching time strongly depends on the GdxCo100-x concentration, with lower Gd concentration exhibiting shorter switching times (less than 500 fs). Our findings in this geometry provide insights into the underlying mechanisms governing single pulse AO-HIS, which challenge existing theoretical predictions. 7. Ultrafast magnetization reversal in ferromagnetic spin-valves: an s-d model perspective

Abstract

We present an extension to simple s-d models, aiming at simulating ultrafast magnetization dynamics and spin transport in metallic heterostructures. In particular, we consider an alternative spin dissipation channel due to a finite exchange splitting of the s band. From this theory, we show three different mechanisms governing the dynamics of spin accumulation. On top of the already widely discussed "-dM/dt" electron-magnon mechanism, we study the role of a dynamic change of exchange splitting (of conduction electrons) as well as the rotation of spins reflected at an interface with a ferromagnet. Finally, we use the presented theory to explain the recent observation of subpicosecond reversal of a ferromagnet in rare-earth free spin-valves. 8. Evidence for large-scale excesses associated with low HI column densities in the sky $$\\$$I. Dust excess

Abstract

Where dust and gas are uniformly mixed, atomic hydrogen can be traced through the detection of far-infrared (FIR) or UV emission of dust. We considered, for the origin of discrepancies observed between various direct and indirect tracers of gas outside the Galactic plane, possible corrections to the zero levels of the Planck-HFI detectors. We set the zero levels of the Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) skymaps as well as the 100 $\mu$m map from COBE/DIRBE and IRAS from the correlation between FIR emission and atomic hydrogen column density excluding regions of lowest gas column density. A modified blackbody model fit to those new zero-subtracted maps led to significantly different maps of the opacity spectral index $\beta$ and temperature $T$ and an overall increase in the optical depth at 353 GHz $\tau_{353}$ of 7.1$\times$10$^{-7}$ compared to the data release 2 Planck map. When comparing $\tau_{353}$ and the HI column density, we observed a uniform spatial distribution of the opacity outside regions with dark neutral gas and CO except in various large-scale regions of low NHI that represent 25% of the sky. In those regions, we observed an average dust column density 45% higher than predictions based on NHI with a maximum of 250% toward the Lockman Hole region. From the average opacity $\sigma_{e 353}$=(8.9$\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{-27}$ cm$^2$ we deduced a dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.53$\times$10$^{-2}$. We did not see evidence of dust associated to a Reynolds layer of ionized hydrogen. We measured a far-ultraviolet isotropic intensity of 137$\pm$15 photons s$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$$A$$^{-1}$ in agreement with extragalactic flux predictions and a near-ultraviolet isotropic intensity of 378$\pm$45 photons s$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$$A$$^{-1}$ corresponding to twice the predicted flux., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

High resolution stellar spectroscopic surveys provide massive amounts of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) measurements. Data can be used to study the distribution of the DIB carriers and those environmental conditions that favor their formation. In parallel, recent studies have also proved that DIBs extracted from stellar spectra constitute new tools for building the 3D structure of the Galactic Interstellar Medium (ISM). The amount of details on the structure depends directly on the quantity of available lines of sight (LOS). Therefore there is a need to construct databases of high-quality DIB measurements as large as possible. We aim at providing the community with a catalog of high-quality measurements of the 1.5273 micron DIB towards a large fraction of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) hot stars observed to correct for the telluric absorption and not used for ISM studies so far. This catalog would complement the extensive database recently extracted from the APOGEE observations and used for 3D ISM mapping. We devised a method to fit the stellar continuum of the hot calibration stars and extracted the DIB from the normalized spectrum. Severe selection criteria based on the absorption characteristics are applied to the results. In particular limiting constraints on the DIB widths and Doppler shifts are deduced from the HI 21 cm measurements, following a new technique of decomposition of the emission spectra. From ~16 000 available hot telluric spectra we have extracted ~ 6700 DIB measurements and their associated uncertainties. The statistical properties of the extracted absorptions are examined and our selection criteria are shown to provide a robust dataset. The resulting catalog contains the DIB total equivalent widths, central wavelengths and widths. Abstract

37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 779 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0779, Detecting and studying galactic gamma-ray sources emitting very-high energy photons sheds light on the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays presumably created in these sources. Currently, there are few sources emitting photons with energies exceeding 100 TeV. In this work we revisit the unidentified source MGRO J1908+06, initially detected by Milagro, using an updated H.E.S.S. dataset and analysis pipeline. The vicinity of the source contains a supernova remnant and pulsars as well as molecular clouds. This makes the identification of the primary source(s) of galactic cosmic rays as well as the nature of the gamma-ray emission challenging, especially in light of the recent HAWC and LHAASO detection of the high energy tail of its spectrum. Abstract

37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2021, Berlin, Germany - Online, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 777 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0777, Fast radio bursts (FRB) are enigmatic powerful single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds and high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. For the time being a number of extragalactic FRBs have been detected in the high-frequency radio band including repeating ones. The most plausible explanation for these phenomena is magnetar hyperflares. The first observational evidence of this scenario was obtained in April 2020 when an FRB was detected from the direction of the Galactic magnetar and soft gamma repeater SGR1935+2154. The FRB was preceded with a number of soft gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift-BAT satellite, which triggered the follow-up program of the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). H.E.S.S. has observed SGR1935+2154 over a 2 hour window few hours prior to the FRB detection by STARE2 and CHIME. The observations overlapped with other X-ray bursts from the magnetar detected by INTEGRAL and Swift-BAT, thus providing first observations of a magnetar in a flaring state in the very-high energy domain. Ultrafast control of thin film nanomagnets using femtosecond laser pulses has attracted considerable attention for future ultrafast and energy-efficient photo-spintronics storage=memory devices. Single femtosecond laser pulse magnetization switching without an applied external magnetic field has been recently observed on various metallic thin films. Abstract

This thesis presents the results of a study of the local interstellar medium based on several tracers: the dust reddening (color excess E(B-V), the dust thermal emission of dust at 353 GHz (optical thickness of the grains tau353), the diffuse γ-ray emission produced by the interaction of cosmic rays with gas, the free-free emission of the ionized gas and the emission lines of HI atoms and CO molecules. These tracers probe the total quantity of gas as well as the quantity of gas in the different phases of the interstellar medium. The main objectives of this study are to test the capability of these tracers to estimate gas quantities, to search for environmental effects and to compare observed trends with the predictions of theoretical models.We have studied more specifically the region of the Galactic anticenter. The information on the velocity of the gas provided by the HI and CO emission lines was used to separate six local cloud complexes in the longitude-latitude-velocity and to separate them from the Galactic background. These complexes include the well-known clouds of Taurus-Auriga, California and Perseus, Cette thèse présente les résultats d'une étude du milieu interstellaire local basée sur les mesures de rougissement dû aux poussières (excès de couleur E(B-V)), de l'émission thermique des poussières à 353 GHz (épaisseur optique des grains tau353), du rayonnement diffus γ produit par l'interaction des rayons cosmiques avec le gaz, de l'émission free-free du gaz ionisé et des raies d'émissions des atomes HI et des molécules CO. Ces traceurs permettent de sonder la quantité totale de gaz ainsi que celle dans les différentes phases du milieu interstellaire. L'objectif de cette étude est de tester la capacité de ces traceurs à estimer les quantités de gaz, de chercher des effets d'environnement et de comparer les tendances observées aux prédictions des modèles théoriques. Nous avons étudié plus particulièrement la région de l'anticentre galactique. L'information sur la vitesse du gaz apportée par les raies d'émission HI et CO a été utilisée pour séparer dans l'espace position-vitesse six complexes de nuages locaux et pour les séparer de l'arrière-plan galactique. Abstract

International audience; Since 2011, the Pays d’Épinal has promoted the “Hêtre des Vosges” brand, later renamed “Terres de Hêtre”. The Pays d’Épinal territory includes 196 municipalities. Forests cover 42% of its surface area (100,000 hectares). New outlets are being sought for the deciduous tree component (62% of the forested area), in particular for beech that covers 40,000 hectares of this territory. Support for the forestry and forest-based industry has therefore become a priority for maintaining stable economic activity in this rural area. This dynamic has given rise to multiple projects and achievements. The final goal is to develop the beech sector as a whole, from the tree to the manufacture of end products.; Le Pays d’Épinal porte depuis 2011 la marque « Hêtre des Vosges », devenue par la suite « Terres de Hêtre ». Le territoire du Pays d’Épinal, qui comporte 196 communes, a une couverture forestière de 42 % (100 000 hectares). La ressource feuillue (62% de la surface forestière) doit trouver des débouchés, notamment le Hêtre qui représente 40 000 hectares sur le territoire. Le soutien à la filière forêt-bois est donc devenu une priorité pour le maintien d’une activité économique stable en zone rurale. De multiples projets et réalisations naissent de cette dynamique. L’objectif ultime est de développer une filière Hêtre dans son ensemble, de l’arbre jusqu’à la production de produits finis.
