Several studies have investigated the relationship between muscle strength and the number of remaining teeth, but some results have been inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the association between muscle strength and the number of remaining teeth in the elderly population of Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural area of Manado, a urban town in East Indonesia, from May 2023 to September 2023. The study included 52 volunteers (19 males and 33 females) aged 60 years or older. Participants were categorized into two groups based on the number of remaining teeth: 20 or more teeth, and fewer than 20 teeth. Muscle strength was measured three times using a CAMRY EHl0l handgrip dynamometer on the dominant hand, with the highest value recorded for analysis. Handgrip strength was classified as low if below 26 kg for males and 18 kg for females. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test with a significance level set at p<0.001. Among the participants, 15 elderly individuals (29%) with 20 or more remaining teeth had normal muscle strength (p<0.001). Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plasma glucose profiles and periodontal disease (PD) severity in men and women Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study, enrolling all eligible patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who regularly visited the outpatient department Results: Patients were divided into severe and non-severe PD groups. The severe PD group showed a male predominance and significantly higher hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels than the non-severe PD group. The optimal HbA1c cutoff value on the receiver operating characteristic curve for predicting severe PD was 7.3% [56 mmol/mol] (sensitivity, 52%; specificity, 73%; P = 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression revealed that male sex (odds ratio [OR], 2.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19–6.34; P = 0.01) and higher HbA1c levels (OR, 3.09; 95% CI, 1.42–6.70; P < 0.01) were independently and significantly associated with the presence of severe PD. The prevalence rates of severe PD in patients with HbA1c levels < 7.3% [56 mmol/mol] and HbA1c levels ≥ 7.3% [56 mmol/mol] were 17.4% and 53.3% in women, and 50.0% and 66.7% in men, respectively. Conclusions: Men with T2DM had a high risk of severe PD independent of HbA1c levels. Aims: The study aimed to explore farmers' self‐care behaviours including oral hygiene, remaining natural teeth, cardiometabolic risks, hepatitis, risk of stroke and their determinant factors. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted between June 2020 and March 2021 in the south‐western remote areas of Taiwan. We recruited current farmers who participated in an annual community health screening conducted by a collaborated local hospital. Data were collected through face‐to‐face interviews using a semi‐structured questionnaire. Blood samples were drawn and stored in the central laboratory of the cooperating hospital. The study outcomes included cardiometabolic risks, the remaining natural teeth, and farmers' self‐care behaviours including oral hygiene, adopting a healthy diet and substance use. Results: Overall, 183 current farmers (55.2% women, aged 66.9 ± 11.7 years) were enrolled. Abnormal blood pressure, high risk of stroke, metabolic syndrome and hepatitis C virus infection were found among the participants. The average remaining teeth were 12.1, 73.2% of participants had <20 teeth; 90.2% and 71% did not undergo regular dental check‐ups and scaling or use dental floss, respectively. The determinant factors associated with the remaining teeth included a high risk of stroke, teeth scaling and dental floss use. Although only 3.8% felt mentally distressed, many farmers were unaware of having potential cardiometabolic diseases and curable viral hepatitis, and only two had received antiviral treatment. Conclusion: The farmers in this study had a high prevalence of cardiometabolic risks, a high probability of stroke, inadequate number of remaining teeth and poor oral hygiene behaviours. These findings can provide evidence to develop health promotion programmes for farmers. Impact: This study demonstrates the health needs of farmers. We strongly recommend that community nurses empower farmers to engage in self‐care behaviours through tailored health promotion programmes. Objective: To identify which social determinants of health explain the gap in the remaining teeth between men and women. Methods: A secondary analysis of data from the Chilean National Health Survey (CNHS) 2016–2017 was performed on the number of remaining teeth in adults. The explanatory variables were organized into structural and intermediate social determinants of health according to the WHO framework. The contribution of both groups and the contribution of each individual explanatory variable to the remaining teeth gap was estimated using the Blinder‐Oaxaca decomposition analysis. Results: The predicted average number of remaining teeth for men was 23.4 and 21.0 for women, thus a mean difference of 2.4 teeth. 49.8% of the inequality between men and women was due to the different distribution (endowments) of the predictors in the model. Among them, structural determinants of health, namely education level (15.8%) and employment status (17.8%), contributed the most. Intermediate determinants had no relevant contribution to explain the gap. Conclusions: Results revealed that the difference in the mean number of remaining teeth between men and women was mainly explained by two structural determinants: education level and employment status. The lack of explanatory power of intermediate determinants and the large explanatory power of structural determinants means that tackling oral health inequity in Chile requires strong political commitment. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of mandibular unilateral and bilateral distal extension partial edentulous situation and the use of removable partial dental prostheses on the force exerted on maxillary anterior teeth. A commercially available jaw model with exchangeable teeth was used. Seven experimental conditions of mandibular distal extension edentulous situation were prepared and a distal extension removable partial dental prosthesis to replace missing posterior teeth was fabricated. The occlusal force was measured by inserting an occlusal force measuring film between the maxillary and mandibular teeth of the model. An occlusal load was applied and the forces and ratios were compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Mann–Whitney U test (p < 0.05). As a result, the force exerted on the maxillary anterior teeth increased significantly as the number of remaining teeth decreased in unilateral and bilateral edentulous situation. The force exerted on the maxillary anterior teeth decreased significantly with use of a removable partial dental prosthesis. It is concluded that when the number of remaining teeth decreases in mandibular unilateral and bilateral distal extension partial edentulous situation, the burden on the maxillary anterior teeth increases. Our findings suggest that for patients with mandibular distal extension partial edentulous situation, using a removable partial dental prosthesis is effective in preserving the remaining teeth by reducing excessive force. Aim: Maintaining ≥20 teeth is a public health goal worldwide. Healthy aging, which includes psychological and social well‐being, as well as physical indicators, has attracted a great deal of attention with the progression of aging societies. However, no studies have examined the association between the number of remaining teeth and healthy aging. This study aimed to investigate the association between the number of remaining teeth and healthy aging. Methods: This community‐based longitudinal cohort study included 8300 Japanese people aged ≥65 years who were free of disability and depression in the baseline survey in 2006. The participants were categorized into four groups according to the number of remaining teeth at baseline: 0–9, 10–19, 20–24 and ≥25. The primary outcome was healthy aging (defined as meeting all four of the following criteria: free of disability, free of depression, high health‐related quality of life and high life satisfaction), as assessed by a questionnaire survey carried out in 2017. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate the corresponding odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results: During about 11 years of follow‐up, 621 (7.5%) participants attained healthy aging. Participants with ≥20 remaining teeth showed a higher healthy aging rate. Compared with participants with 0–9 teeth, the multivariate‐adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for 10–19, 20–24 and ≥25 teeth were 0.98 (0.77–1.26), 1.28 (1.01–1.63) and 1.59 (1.24–2.03), respectively. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the influence of mandibular free-end partial edentulism and use of conventional or implant-supported removable dental prostheses in the partially edentulous area on the load exerted on the maxillary anterior teeth.Methods: A jaw model with mandibular free-end missing teeth was used, and a distal extension, removable partial dental prosthesis was fabricated to replace the missing posterior teeth. Four experimental conditions were set up: 1) without prosthesis, 2) with a conventional removable partial dental prosthesis, 3) with an implant-supported removable partial dental prosthesis, and 4) with a complete dental arch. Strain gauges were attached to the root surface of the maxillary left central incisor, canine, first premolar, and first molar. The load exerted on them was calculated based on the calibration coefficient. An occlusal load of 49 N was applied, and the forces were compared using a Kruskal-Wallis test (P < 0.05).Results: The load exerted on the maxillary anterior teeth increased significantly with no prosthesis, decreased significantly with a conventional removable partial dental prosthesis, and decreased even more significantly with an implant-supported removable partial dental prosthesis.Conclusions: The burden on the maxillary anterior teeth decreased with the use of a removable partial dental prosthesis and decreased even further with the use of an implant-supported dental prosthesis. The use of an implant to support a distal extension removable partial dental prosthesis is potentially effective in preserving the remaining teeth and tissues by reducing excessive stress in patients with mandibular free-end partial edentulism. Abstract Background The prevalence of periodontal disease is increasing among elderly individuals in Japan. Reports on the risk factors for tooth loss have included socioeconomic status (SES); however, few studies have addressed the association between remaining teeth and SES by examining whether education and occupation have a synergistic effect on tooth loss. Accordingly, the present study evaluated the association of remaining teeth with the socioeconomic factors of educational and occupational histories in Japanese elderly individuals. Methods This retrospective case-control study used data from the Toyama Dementia Survey, Japan. Toyama Prefecture residents aged ≥65 years were randomly selected for the study (sampling rate, 0.5%), and 1303 residents agreed to participate (response rate, 84.8%). Structured interviews with participants and family members (or proxies, if necessary) were conducted. Participants’ lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking and alcohol consumption), medical history, and SES (educational and occupational history) as well as the presence or absence of remaining teeth were assessed. The association between SES and remaining teeth was examined using a logistic regression analysis. Results Overall, 275 cases with no remaining teeth and 898 controls with remaining teeth were identified. The odds ratio (OR) for complete tooth loss was higher among less educated participants (≤6 years) than among highly educated participants [age- and sex-adjusted OR, 3.29; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.90–5.71]; furthermore, it was higher among participants with a blue-collar occupational history than among those with a white-collar occupational history (age- and sex-adjusted OR, 2.16; 95% CI, 1.52–3.06). After adjusting for employment history or educational attainment, the ORs for tooth loss were 2.79–3.07 among less educated participants and 1.89–1.93 among participants with a blue-collar occupational history. A current or former smoking habit and medical history of diabetes and osteoporosis increased the risk of tooth loss. The interaction term of a low level of education and a history of blue-collar occupation with tooth loss was not significant. Conclusions In Japan, a low SES is a risk factor for tooth loss. A low level of education is a more important predictor of tooth loss than a blue-collar occupation.

A total of 17,417 participants, more than 19 years old, were finally included in this study (men = 7394 and women = 10,023). Through this study, we have discovered that the remaining teeth affect overall health and that the fewer number of them may indicate a lower quality of life, as well. The quality of life according to the number of remaining teeth was assessed among Koreans using the Euro-Qol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) system. Method The Euro-Qol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) system was used to measure the health-related QoL. Its five dimensions included mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression. The respondents were asked to choose one of the followings: G 1, no problems; G 2, some problems; and G 3, problematic, to best describe their health status for the five dimensions. Then, we assigned low QoL to G2 + G3 and high QoL to G1. We used age, gender, economic income, educational level, residence, and marital status for the demographic variables and, drinking, smoking, exercise, BMI, and metabolic syndrome for health behaviors. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) for the high QoL (G1) on the five categories of EQ-5D according to the number of remaining teeth. On the basis of the 0–15 remaining teeth group, we drew a comparison of the QoL between the 16–20 and 21–28 remaining teeth groups. Most studies that have demonstrated an association between number of remaining teeth and cognitive impairment have treated teeth as a continuous variable, although the relationship is nonlinear. The aim of this cross‐sectional study was to determine the critical number of remaining teeth in hospital outpatients at which the association with cognitive impairment becomes apparent. Japanese adults living on Sado Island who visited Sado General Hospital were invited to participate in Project in Sado for Total Health. In total, 2,530 adults were interviewed and had their teeth counted; 1,476 of these individuals also completed the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE) and underwent measurement of their serum high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hsCRP) levels. Patients on dialysis and those with hsCRP ≥ 10 mg/L were excluded. The final study group consisted of 565 adults (290 men and 275 women) of mean age 69.8 (range 29–91) years. An MMSE score < 24 was considered to indicate cognitive impairment. The subjects were categorized according to whether they had an edentulous jaw or one to 10, 11–20, 21–27, or ≥28 remaining teeth. One hundred twenty‐eight of the 565 study participants were diagnosed to have cognitive impairment. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed associations of cognitive impairment with older age, ischemic heart disease, smoking, and alcohol consumption. After adjustment for covariates, having one to 10 remaining teeth was significantly associated with cognitive impairment. Objectives: Although a few studies have investigated the relationship between kidney and oral function (number of remaining teeth), their results remain inconclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between kidney function and oral health in community-dwelling healthy elderlies and examine the factors associated with kidney function., Materials and Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the Shimane prefecture cohort recruited by the Center for Community-Based Health Research and Education in 2019. We collected clinical data on dental status, background factors and kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR], mL/min/1.73 m2 and creatinine levels, mg/dL)., Results: The study enrolled 481 participants, whose mean age was 66.7±7.4 years, and 223 (46.4%) participants were men. Multivariate analysis revealed significant correlations between eGFR (B=0.17, P =0.04), creatinine (B=-0.54, P <0.01), and the number of remaining teeth. The number of remaining teeth was associated with creatinine and eGFR, which are indicators of kidney function., Conclusion: This study suggests that preserving the teeth may prevent decline in kidney function. Dental professionals should provide instructions and professional care to reduce the risk of systemic diseases such as kidney dysfunction.

This paper aimed to study on the relevance of mental health and oral health. The subjects were recruited total 3,261 elderly of over 40 years old, using the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). All the collected data were analyzed by chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression using SPSS 23.0 version. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship of sleeping time or stress and the number of remaining teeth, and 95% confidence intervals were computed. Sleeping time odds ratio(OR) of the number of remaining teeth was 1.52 (95% confidence interval: 1.074-2.135) and Stress odds ratio(OR) was 2.39 (95% confidence interval: 1.855-3.090), but there is no statistically significant difference after adjusted age, gender and other variables. This cross-sectional study was conducted to examine tooth loss and associated factors among professional drivers and white-collar workers. The participants were recruited by applying screening procedures to a pool of Japanese registrants in an online database. The participants were asked to complete a self-reported questionnaire. A total of 592 professional drivers and 328 white-collar workers (male, aged 30 to 69 years) were analyzed. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify differences between professional drivers and white-collar workers. The results showed that professional drivers had fewer teeth than white-collar workers (odds ratio [OR], 1.74; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.150 - 2.625). Moreover, a second multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that several factors were associated with the number of teeth among professional drivers: diabetes mellitus (OR, 2.68; 95% CI, 1.388 - 5.173), duration of brushing teeth (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.066 - 2.572), frequency of eating breakfast (OR, 2.23; 95% CI, 1.416 - 3.513), frequency of eating out (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.086 - 2.671) and smoking status (OR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.388 - 5.964). Objective: To assess the relationship between social inequality and the number of remaining teeth in an elderly Thai population.Background: Having twenty or more remaining teeth is an important indicator of optimal oral health in the elderly.Methods: The data for this study were derived from the Survey of Older Persons in Thailand, conducted by the National Statistical Office, based on face-to-face interviews with people aged ≥60. The total sample was 30 427. The oral health measure was self-reported remaining number of teeth. Income, education and possession of durable goods were utilised as measures of social inequality.Results: More than half of the sample (57.0%) was women. The majority (73.2%) was in the age range 60-74 years old. Less than a fifth (15.5%) had 7 or more years of education. A third earned <20 000 Thai Baht (THB) per annum (defined as poor). More than half (52.8%) of the sample had <20 remaining teeth. There was a link between social inequalities and tooth loss. In the adjusted model, elderly people, who were older than 75, who were not under a married status, had a lower level of education, had a lower income, and who did not own luxury goods, were 2.84 (CI 95% 2.66-3.03), 1.31 (CI 95% 1.21-1.41), 1.44 (CI 95% 1.34-1.56), 1.12 (CI 95% 1.13-1.29) and 1.21 (CI 95% 1.13-1.29) times more likely to have 19 or fewer teeth remaining, respectively.Conclusion: Social inequality is related to the number of remaining teeth in elderly Thai people. Objective This study assessed the relationships between oral health (number of remaining and healthy teeth and periodontal disease) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to contribute to improved patient care. Patients We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study of consecutive patients being regularly treated for chronic diseases (T2DM, hypertension, and dyslipidemia). A dentist or dental hygienist accurately evaluated the oral environment. Patients with fewer than 20 teeth were classified as having reduced remaining teeth (RRT). Results A total of 267 patients were enrolled, including 153 patients (57%) with T2DM and 114 without (43%). Patients with T2DM had 3 fewer remaining teeth on average than those without DM [median: 22 (interquartile range (IQR): 11-27) vs. median: 25 (IQR: 17.3-28), p=0.02]. In addition, patients with T2DM had 4 fewer healthy teeth on average than those without DM [median: 8 (IQR: 2.8-15) vs. median: 12 (IQR: 6-16), p=0.02]. The frequency of RRT was higher in the T2DM group (n=63; 41%) than in the non-DM group (n=31; 27%, p=0.02). Multivariable logistic regression for the presence of RRT in the T2DM group found that age [odds ratio (OR), 1.08; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03-1.13; p<0.01] and regular dental consultations (OR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.10-0.76; p=0.01) were independently and significantly associated. Conclusion The number of remaining or healthy teeth was significantly lower in patients with T2DM than in those without T2DM in current Japanese clinical practice. Regular dental consultation is recommended to preserve remaining teeth in patients with T2DM.

Objective: Many studies report a significant relationship between the one-leg standing time with the eyes open and the occlusal relationship. To determine the association between proprioception (the periodontal membrane vs muscle spindle) to the one-leg standing time, the authors compared the one-leg standing time with eyes open between mouth-opened and mouth-closed conditions. Methods: The study participants were 107 healthy, elderly patients. The authors measured the one-leg standing time with eyes open between mouth-opened and mouth-closed conditions. Results: The one-leg standing time was significantly shorter with the mouth opened (21.1619.1 seconds) than with the mouth closed (25.1621.4 seconds). Patients whose one-leg standing time was equal or shorter with the mouth opened than with the mouth closed were not different from the other patients with regard to age, handgrip strength, BMI, and the number of remaining teeth. Abstract: Purpose: This study aimed to compare the survival rates of remaining teeth between implant-supported fixed dentures (IFDs) and removable partial dentures (RPDs) in patients with large edentulous cases. The second goal was to assess the risk factors for remaining tooth loss. Materials and methods: The study subjects were selected among those who received prosthodontic treatment at Okayama University Dental Hospital for their edentulous space exceeding at least four continuous missing teeth. Twenty-one patients were included in the IFD group and 82 patients were included in the RPD group. Survival rates of remaining teeth were calculated in three subcategories: (1) whole remaining teeth, (2) adjacent teeth to intended edentulous space, and (3) opposing teeth to intended edentulous space. Results: The ten-year cumulative survival rate of the whole remaining teeth was significantly higher in the IFD group (40.0%) than in the RPD group (24.4%). On the other hand, there was no significant difference between two groups in the survival rate of teeth adjacent or opposing to intended edentulous space. A Cox proportional hazard analysis revealed that RPD restoration and gender (male) were the significant risk factors for remaining tooth loss (whole remaining teeth). Conclusions: These results suggest that IFD treatment can reduce the incidence of remaining tooth loss in large edentulous cases. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the roof of the glenoid fossa (RGF) thickness and condyle morphology and the influence of the number of remaining teeth and age. Methods: Cone beam CT data sets from 77 asymptomatic European patients were analysed retrospectively in this study. The thinnest area of RGF was identified among the sagittal and coronal slices on a computer screen; distance measurement software was used to measure the thickness. Moreover, we applied a free digital imaging and communications in medicine viewer for classification of condyle head type. It was also used to analyse any relation between RGF thickness and the number of remaining teeth. We performed a correlation analysis for RGF, age and missing teeth. Finally, we investigated combining sagittal condyle morphological characterization with coronal condyle morphology in relation to the number of joints and RGF thickness. Results: The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed no significant differences in RGF thickness among any of the coronal condyle head morphology groups (p > 0.05). There were significant differences in the thinnest part of RGF in relation to the sagittal plane for condyle morphological characterization, because we observed increased RGF thickness in joints with osteoarthritis features (p < 0.05). There is a non-significant correlation between the thinnest part of the RGF and the number of remaining teeth (/2 > 0.05). Conclusions: We found that the RGF thickness is unaffected by the coronal condyle head morphology and the number of remaining teeth. doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00505.x The evaluation of oral health in stroke patients Objective: As tooth loss has been suggested as a potential risk factor for stroke, oral examinations were carried out on stroke patients to review the oral condition of those patients. Method: The subjects were patients consecutively discharged from the recovery rehabilitation unit of Hiroshima City General Rehabilitation Center between April 2008 and December 2009. All patients were offered oral examination and 358 of 443 patients accepted. Patients receiving dental examination were divided into two groups: one group comprising stroke patients and the second, patients with other disorders. These two groups were then compared for the number of remaining teeth by age group. Results: Among the examined patients, the number of remaining teeth in stroke patients in their 50s and 60s was significantly lower than for patients in corresponding age groups (18.4 ± 9.4 vs. 24.5 ± 5.4 and 18.3 ± 9.2 vs. 22.2 ± 7.2, respectively, with p < 0.05 for both age groups) who were hospitalised for other conditions. In addition, the number of remaining teeth in stroke patients in their 50s was also significantly lower than the number reported in the Survey of Dental Diseases (24.1 ± 6.1; p < 0.05). The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to determine the association between neighborhood social capital, individual social networks and social support and the number of remaining teeth in elderly Japanese. In December 2006, self-administered questionnaires were sent to 31 237 eligible community-dwelling individuals (response rate: 73.9%). Included in the analysis were 21 736 participants. Five neighborhood social capital variables were calculated from individual civic networks, sports and hobby networks, volunteer networks, friendship networks and social support variables. We used multilevel logistic regression models to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of having 20 or more teeth according to neighborhood social capital variables with adjustment for sex, age, individual social networks and social support, educational attainment, neighborhood educational level, dental health behavior, smoking status, history of diabetes and self-rated health. The average age of the participants was 74.9 (standard deviation; 6.6) years, and 28.5% of them had 20 or more teeth. In the univariate multilevel model, there were statistically significant associations between neighborhood sports and hobby networks, friendship networks and self-reported dentate status. In the multivariable multilevel model, compared with participants living in lowest friendship network neighborhoods, those living in highest friendship network neighborhoods had an OR 1.17 (95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.30) times higher for having 20 or more teeth. There is a significant association between one network aspect of neighborhood social capital and individual dentate status regardless of individual social networks and social support. Objective: Stabilisation of partial dentures is an important part of prosthodontic treatment, particularly in patients with an excessive reduction in alveolar bone supporting their abutment teeth. In these cases, overdenture prostheses are one possible treatment choice. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of overdentures on the condition of alveolar bone of the remaining teeth, and to evaluate the overdenture concept in the prosthetic treatment of partially edentulous patients. Materials and methods: The investigation was conducted on 22 patients during observation periods of 6 and 10 years. After preparation, all abutment teeth were provided with either amalgam restorations or gold copings. An overdenture in the lower jaw was fabricated for every patient. A special film holder was used to repeat the X-ray procedure in every patient in the same manner. The radiographs were evaluated using the grid scale. The alveolar bone level of all remaining teeth was evaluated on dental films by measuring the distance between the root apex and coronal border of the alveolar bone. Results: A statistically significant difference ( p < 0.01) was calculated 6 years after delivery stage between distal alveolar bone levels of experimental abutments under overdentures and the remaining teeth of the control group. Alveolar bone of abutment teeth was considerably preserved, particularly in seven patients observed 10 years after provision of their dentures. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, the validity of the overdenture treatment in partially edentulous patients is concluded. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess whether elderly people with 20 or more natural teeth were more likely to live longer than a cohort with less than 20 teeth. Materials and methods: Groups of elderly people over 80 years of age (24 males and 35 females) with 20 or more teeth (≥20 group) were compared with elderly people (24 males and 35 females) with less than 20 teeth (<20 group). Follow-up studies were conducted at regular intervals for 10 years from July 1992 to July 2002. The cumulative survival rate of the ≥20 group (average ± SE tooth number of teeth – males, 23.9 ± 0.6; females, 23.8 ± 0.4) was compared with the <20 group (average number of teeth – males, 3.8 ± 1.1; females, 2.6 ± 0.8). The multivariate Cox proportional hazard models with the number of teeth in a group (≥20 group or <20 group). Smoking status and alcohol intake as covariates were used to adjust the cumulative survival rate. Results: The male participants in the ≥20 group had a significantly higher cumulative survival rates ( p < 0.05) than the <20 group at 18 and 21 months from baseline. There were no significant differences in survival rates between the female groups. Adjusted cumulative survival rate was significantly different at 72, 75 and 78 months between the ≥20 group and <20 group for males but not for females. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the occlusal status of elderly Japanese over 80 years with at least 20 teeth.Materials and Methods: The study enrolled 76 elderly Japanese (44 male, 32 female) with a mean age of 82 years and an average of 25.7 remaining teeth. The study consisted of intra-oral examination, intra-oral and facial photographs, radiographs and impressions for study casts.Results: No gender difference was observed in age or number of remaining teeth. Anteroposterior occlusal relationship was characterised by maxillary protrusion in 67.6%, acceptable overjet in 31.0%, and anterior crossbite in 1.4%. Vertically, deep bite was noted in 33.8%, acceptable overbite in 64.8%, and open bite in 1.4%. Most of the subjects had either Angle class I (68.4%) or class II (25.7%) canine relationship. Only 3.9% of the subjects had upper anterior crowding. Lower anterior crowding was observed in 23.7%, but tended not to be severe.Conclusion: These results indicate that Japanese who attained the goal of '8020' have a relatively good occlusion. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the masticatory function and the maxillary defect configuration, size, and remaining teeth in post-maxillectomy patients restored with an obturator prosthesis. Fifty consecutive post-maxillectomy patients (mean age 67·0) participated in this study. The subjects consisted of 26 dentate and 24 edentulous patients. Data were collected from the patients’ clinical records, diagnostic casts, and a questionnaire on masticatory function to evaluate the defect configuration, size, and the masticatory function scores associated with wearing obturator prostheses. The defect size was evaluated by the ratio of defect area to the horizontal impression area. The defect configuration was assessed according to Aramany's classification and separated into unilateral and bilateral defects. The multiple regression analysis and the Mann–Whitney U-test ( P < 0·05) were used to assess statistical significance. The Spearman's correlation coefficient by rank test was also used to detect correlation. The following conclusions were made: (i) The presence of teeth in the maxillary dentition and the different type of the defect configuration had significant correlation with the masticatory function score ( r = 0·616). (ii) The masticatory function scores of the subjects differed significantly with the presence of teeth in the maxillary dentition and the different types of defect configurations ( P = 0·005, P = 0·002, respectively). (iii) There was significant correlation between the masticatory function score and the size of the defect area in the edentulous group ( r = −0·648, P = 0·001). The relationship between oral health and general health in the elderly has been much studied. However, further studies focussing on the influence of oral health on the quality of life (QOL) among the elderly are required. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between oral health and physical or cultural activities. Subjects were 101 community-dwelling elderly persons who were functionally independent (mean age 70.3). Oral health status was evaluated according to the number of remaining teeth and the number of functional teeth. Physical and cultural activities were evaluated from self-reported information. The relationship between oral health and physical or cultural activities was examined by logistic regression analysis. About 60% of subjects took part in cultural activities, and less than half actively exercised (leisure sports, 33.6%; travel, 42.6%). Persons with 20 or more remaining teeth were more active in leisure sports (Odds ratio (OR)=4.86, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.34, 17.38) and travel (OR=5.42, 95% CI=1.63, 18.08) than those with fewer than 20 remaining teeth. These results suggest that the number of remaining teeth is associated with physical activity in elderly persons. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose This study aimed to determine the influence of mandibular free-end partial edentulism and use of conventional or implant-supported removable dental prostheses in the partially edentulous area on the load exerted on the maxillary anterior teeth.Methods A jaw model with mandibular free-end missing teeth was used, and a distal extension, removable partial dental prosthesis was fabricated to replace the missing posterior teeth. Four experimental conditions were set up: 1) without prosthesis, 2) with a conventional removable partial dental prosthesis, 3) with an implant-supported removable partial dental prosthesis, and 4) with a complete dental arch. Strain gauges were attached to the root surface of the maxillary left central incisor, canine, first premolar, and first molar. The load exerted on them was calculated based on the calibration coefficient. An occlusal load of 49 N was applied, and the forces were compared using a Kruskal-Wallis test (P < 0.05). Results The load exerted on the maxillary anterior teeth increased significantly with no prosthesis, decreased significantly with a conventional removable partial dental prosthesis, and decreased even more significantly with an implant-supported removable partial dental prosthesis. Conclusions The burden on the maxillary anterior teeth decreased with the use of a removable partial dental prosthesis and decreased even further with the use of an implant-supported dental prosthesis. The use of an implant to support a distal extension removable partial dental prosthesis is potentially effective in preserving the remaining teeth and tissues by reducing excessive stress in patients with mandibular free-end partial edentulism.

Tooth loss represents a diffused pathologic condition affecting the worldwide population. Risk factors have been identified in both general features (smoking, diabetes, economic status) and local tooth-related factors (caries, periodontitis). In this retrospective study, we examined the data of 366 patients with a large number of remaining teeth (≥25) undergoing maintenance therapy in order to identify specific risk factors for tooth loss. The number of remaining teeth, number of non-vital teeth, and number of occlusal units were investigated for their correlation with tooth loss. The mean follow-up of patients was 9.2 years (range 5 to 14). Statistically significant risk factors for tooth loss were identified as number of remaining teeth at baseline ( p = 0.05), number of occlusal units ( p = 0.03), and number of non-vital teeth in posterior regions ( p < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression showed that the number of occlusal units and number of non-vital teeth in the posterior regions were significantly associated with a greater risk of tooth loss (odds ratio 1.88 and 3.17, respectively). These results confirm that not only the number of remaining teeth, but also their vital or non-vital status and the distribution between the anterior and posterior regions influence the long-term survival.

Objective: Many studies report a significant relationship between the one-leg standing time with the eyes open and the occlusal relationship. To determine the association between proprioception (the periodontal membrane vs muscle spindle) to the one-leg standing time, the authors compared the one-leg standing time with eyes open between mouth-opened and mouth-closed conditions., Methods: The study participants were 107 healthy, elderly patients. The authors measured the one-leg standing time with eyes open between mouth-opened and mouth-closed conditions., Results: The one-leg standing time was significantly shorter with the mouth opened (21·1±19·1 seconds) than with the mouth closed (25·1±21·4 seconds). Patients whose one-leg standing time was equal or shorter with the mouth opened than with the mouth closed were not different from the other patients with regard to age, handgrip strength, BMI, and the number of remaining teeth., Discussion: The vertical mandibular position may affect body balance.

Objective: The aim of this survey was to record removable partial denture (RPD) retentive elements and abutment teeth in partially edentulous patients, identified in commercial laboratories in Athens, Greece., Material and Methods: 628 master casts with the corresponding cast metal frameworks used in the construction of RPDs were evaluated. Casts were photographed to identify the number and position of existing teeth, the partial edentulism class and the retentive elements. Prevalence tables and the x(2) test were used for the statistical analysis of the collected data (α=.05)., Results: There were 276 maxillary (43.9%) and 352 (56.1%) mandibular casts. Maxillary edentulism entailed almost a total absence of right third molars in 96.7% and left third molars 96.0% of casts, with lower rates for the first and second molars. Edentulism in the posterior mandible presented a similar pattern. The most profound findings concerning retentive elements were: 91.9% of the retainers used were clasps and the remaining 8.1% were attachments. Of the clasps used, 48.9% were of the Roach Τ type, a finding more common in Kennedy Class I as compared to other Kennedy Classes (p<0.01). The circumferential clasps accounted for 19.3% of the total clasps used, and it was less frequently presented (8.8%) in Kennedy I Classes (p<0.01)., Conclusions: Roach clasps were used in the majority of cases whereas RPI clasps and attachments were rarely used.
