Ethylene is an important feedstock in the chemical industry, but currently requires production from fossil resources. The electrocatalytic oxidative decarboxylation of succinic acid offers in principle an environmentally friendly route to generate ethylene. Here, a detailed investigation of the role of different carbon electrode materials and characteristics revealed that a flat electrode surface and high ordering of the carbon material are conducive for the reaction. A range of electrochemical and spectroscopic approaches such as Koutecky-Levich analysis, rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) studies, and Tafel analysis as well as quantum chemical calculations, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy generated further insights into the mechanism of the overall process. A distinct reaction intermediate was detected, and the decarboxylation onset potential was determined to be 2.2-2.3 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Following the mechanistic studies and electrode optimization, a two-step bio-electrochemical process was established for ethylene production using succinic acid sourced from food waste. The initial step of this integrated process involves microbial hydrolysis/fermentation of food waste into aqueous solutions containing succinic acid (0.3 M; 3.75 mmol per g bakery waste). The second step is the electro-oxidation of the obtained intermediate succinic acid to ethylene using a flow setup at room temperature, with a productivity of 0.4-1 μmol ethylene cmelectrode -2 h-1. This approach provides an alternative strategy to produce ethylene from food waste under ambient conditions using renewable energy.

Two series of novel carbon nitride photocatalysts, Rho‐CN (“rhodizonate‐doped carbon nitride”) and Rho‐CN‐TC (Rho‐CN treated in potassium thiocyanate melt), are synthesized in a multistep fashion via copolymerization of cyanamide with potassium rhodizonate. The formed ionic carbon nitrides are composed of poly(triazine imide) (PTI/Li+Cl−) and potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K‐PHI) phases and provide a broad absorption range up to 800 nm. The photocatalysts are characterized by several techniques (including diffuse reflectance ultraviolet–visible, powder X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical methods) and studied in a series of photocatalytic reactions, including red light‐promoted benzylamine oxidation, dual photoredox/nickel C–N cross‐coupling, and hydrogen peroxide evolution. The optimal ratio of rhodizonate dopant in its mixture with cyanamide is found to be 0.5 mol%. The performance of the newly synthesized materials is comparable to the activities of the benchmark catalysts K‐PHI and CN‐OA‐m (defective poly(heptazine imide) doped with oxamide), while not requiring more expensive nitrogen sources for preparation, like 5‐aminotetrazole, or multiple oven cycles.

The production of clean fuels and chemicals from waste feedstocks is an appealing approach towards creating a circular economy. However, waste photoreforming commonly employs particulate photocatalysts, which display low product yields, selectivity, and reusability. Here, a perovskite‐based photoelectrochemical (PEC) device is reported, which produces H2 fuel and simultaneously reforms waste substrates. A novel Cu30Pd70 oxidation catalyst is integrated in the PEC device to generate value‐added products using simulated solar light, achieving 60–90% product selectivity and ≈70–130 µmol cm−2 h−1 product formation rates, which corresponds to 102–104 times higher activity than conventional photoreforming systems. The single‐light absorber device offers versatility in terms of substrate scope, sustaining unassisted photocurrents of 4–9 mA cm−2 for plastic, biomass, and glycerol conversion, in either a two‐compartment or integrated “artificial leaf” configuration. These configurations enable an effective reforming of non‐transparent waste streams and facile device retrieval from the reaction mixture. Accordingly, the presented PEC platform provides a proof‐of‐concept alternative towards photoreforming, approaching more closely the performance and versatility required for commercially viable waste utilization.

The synthesis of fuels using sunlight offers a promising sustainable solution for chemical energy storage, but inefficient utilization of the solar spectrum limits its commercial viability. Apart from fundamental improvements to (photo)catalyst materials, solar fuel production systems can also be designed to improve solar energy utilization by integrating complementary technologies that more efficiently utilize the solar spectrum. Here we review recent progress on emerging complementary approaches to better modify, enhance or distribute solar energy for sunlight-to-fuel conversion, including advanced light management, integrated thermal approaches and solar concentrators. These strategies can improve the efficiency and production rates of existing photo(electro)chemical systems and, therefore, the overall economics of solar fuel production. More broadly, the approaches highlight the necessary collaboration between materials science and engineering to help drive the adoption of a sustainable energy economy using existing technologies.

The clean conversion of carbon dioxide and water to a single multicarbon product and O2 using sunlight via photocatalysis without the assistance of organic additives or electricity remains an unresolved challenge. Here we report a bio-abiotic hybrid system with the non-photosynthetic, CO2-fixing acetogenic bacterium Sporomusa ovata grown on a scalable and cost-effective photocatalyst sheet consisting of a pair of particulate semiconductors (La and Rh co-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:La,Rh) and Mo-doped BiVO4 (BiVO4:Mo)). The biohybrid effectively produces acetate (CH3COO–) and oxygen (O2) using only sunlight, CO2 and H2O, achieving a solar-to-acetate conversion efficiency of 0.7% at ambient conditions (298 K, 1 atm). The photocatalyst sheet oxidizes water to O2 and provides electrons and hydrogen (H2) to S. ovata for the selective synthesis of CH3COO– from CO2. To demonstrate utility in a closed carbon cycle, the solar-generated acetate was used directly as feedstock in a bioelectrochemical system for electricity generation. These semi-biological approaches thus offer a promising strategy for sustainably and cleanly fixing CO2 and closing the carbon cycle. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

The design and synthesis of faceted nanoparticles with a controlled composition is of enormous importance to modern catalyst engineering. Faceted FePt-Fe3O4 dumbbell nanoparticles have been prepared by a simple, one-pot technique that avoids the need for expensive additives or preformed seeds. The faceted product consists of an FePt octopod and a cubic Fe3O4 lobe, of mean diameter 13.6 and 14.9 nm, respectively. The mass normalized activity for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction shows that this new structure-type outperforms related catalysts in alkaline media. This work illustrates the power of morphology control and tailoring crystal facet abundance at the nanoparticle surface for enhancing catalytic performance.

The selective reduction of CO 2 with inexpensive solar-driven photoelectrochemical devices is a contemporary challenge in the quest for renewable fuel production. Here, we report a molecular catalyst-based photocathode assembled from precious-metal-free components that is active towards aqueous CO 2 reduction. The reported photocathode is based on a phosphonated cobalt bis(terpyridine) catalyst that is interfaced via a mesoporous TiO 2 scaffold with a light-harvesting p-type silicon electrode. The hybrid photoelectrode reduces CO 2 to CO in both organic-water and purely aqueous conditions, achieving a turnover number of ~330 and maintaining stable activity for more than one day. Critically, in-depth electrochemical as well as in situ resonance Raman and infrared spectroelectrochemical investigations alluded to a catalytic mechanism that differs to that reported for the soluble metal bis(terpyridine) catalyst as the consequence of the immobilization. In addition, it further unlocks an earlier catalytic onset and better electrocatalytic performance while enabling aqueous CO 2 reduction with the reported photocathode.

Thermal or photochemical metal-centered cycloaddition reactions of azidocobaltocenium hexafluoridophosphate or azidoferrocene with (cyclooctadiene)(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt- (I) afforded the first metallocenyl-substituted tetrazene cyclopentadienyl cobalt complexes together with azocobaltocenium or azoferrocene as side products. The trimetallic CpCo compounds are highly conjugated, colored, and redox-active metallo-aromatic compounds, as shown by their spectroscopic, structural, and electrochemical properties. Coupling light-harvesting semiconducting nanoparticles (NPs) with redox enzymes has been shown to create artificial photosynthetic systems that hold promise for the synthesis of solar fuels. High quantum yields require efficient electron transfer from the nanoparticle to the redox protein, a property that can be difficult to control. Here, we have compared binding and electron transfer between dye-sensitized TiO2 nanocrystals or CdS quantum dots and two decaheme cytochromes on photoanodes. The effect of NP surface chemistry was assessed by preparing NPs capped with amine or carboxylic acid functionalities. For the TiO2 nanocrystals, binding to the cytochromes was optimal when capped with a carboxylic acid ligand, whereas for the CdS QDs, better adhesion was observed for amine capped ligand shells. When using TiO2 nanocrystals, dye-sensitized with a phosphonated bipyridine Ru(II) dye, photocurrents are observed that are dependent on the redox state of the decaheme, confirming that electrons are transferred from the TiO2 nanocrystals to the surface via the decaheme conduit. In contrast, when CdS NPs are used, photocurrents are not dependent on the redox state of the decaheme, consistent with a model in which electron transfer from CdS to the photoanode bypasses the decaheme protein. These results illustrate that although the organic shell of NPs nanoparticles crucially affects coupling with proteinaceous material, the coupling can be difficult to predict or engineer.

Strong interest exists in the development of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite photovoltaics and of photoelectrochemical (PEC) tandem absorber systems for solar fuel production. However, their scalability and durability have long been limiting factors. In this work, we reveal how both fields can be seamlessly merged together, to obtain scalable, bias-free solar water splitting tandem devices. For this purpose, state-of-the-art cesium formamidinium methylammonium (CsFAMA) triple cation mixed halide perovskite photovoltaic cells with a nickel oxide (NiOx) hole transport layer are employed to produce Field’s metal-epoxy encapsulated photocathodes. Their stability (up to 7h), photocurrent density (–12.1 0.3mAcm 2 at 0V vs.RHE) and reproducibility enables a matching combination with robust BiVO4 photoanodes, resulting in 0.25cm2 PEC tandems with an excellent stability of up to 20h and a bias-free solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 0.35 0.14%. The high reliability of the fabrication procedures allows scaling of the devices up to 10cm2, with a slight decrease in bias-free photocurrent density from 0.39 0.15mAcm 2 to 0.23 0.10mAcm 2 due to an increasing series resistance. To characterise these devices, a versatile 3D-printed PEC cell was also developed. The modular PEC cell represents an affordable alternative to existing designs and can be easily adjusted for a broad range of samples. Overall, these findings shed further light on the factors required to bring both perovskite photovoltaics and photoelectrocatalysis into large-scale applications, revealing some key aspects for device fabrication, operation and implementation.

Photoreforming of lignocellulose is a promising approach toward sustainable H2 generation, but this kinetically challenging reaction currently requires UV-absorbing or toxic light absorbers under harsh conditions. Here, we report a cyanamide-functionalized carbon nitride, NCNCNx, which shows enhanced performance upon ultra-sonication. This activated NCNCNx allows for the visible-light driven conversion of purified and raw lignocellulose samples into H2 in the presence of various proton reduction co-catalysts. The reported room-temperature photoreforming process operates under benign aqueous conditions (pH ~2-15) without the need for toxic components.

Visible-light driven H₂ evolution in water is achieved using catechol-photosensitised TiO₂ nanoparticles with a molecular nickel catalyst. Layer-by-layer immobilisation of catechol-TiO₂ onto tin-doped indium oxide electrodes generates photocathodic currents in the presence of an electron acceptor. This approach represents a new strategy for controlling photocurrent direction in dye-sensitised photoelectrochemical applications.

Factors governing the photoelectrochemical output of photosynthetic microorganisms are poorly understood, and energy loss may occur due to inefficient electron transfer (ET) processes. Here, we systematically compare the photoelectrochemistry of photosystem II (PSII) protein-films to cyanobacteria biofilms to derive: (i) the losses in light-to-charge conversion efficiencies, (ii) gains in photocatalytic longevity, and (iii) insights into the ET mechanism at the biofilm interface. This study was enabled by the use of hierarchically structured electrodes, which could be tailored for high/stable loadings of PSII core complexes and Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells. The mediated photocurrent densities generated by the biofilm were 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of the protein-film. This was partly attributed to a lower photocatalyst loading as the rate of mediated electron extraction from PSII in vitro is only double that of PSII in vivo. The development of photoelectrodes capable of light-driven hydrogen evolution from water is an important approach for the storage of solar energy in the form of a chemical energy carrier. However, molecular catalyst-based photocathodes remain scarcely reported and typically suffer from low efficiencies and/or stabilities due to inadequate strategies for interfacing the molecular component with the light-harvesting material. In this study, we report the straightforward preparation of a p-silicon|mesoporous titania|molecular catalyst photocathode assembly that is active towards proton reduction in aqueous media with an onset potential of +0.4 V $vs.$ RHE. The mesoporous TiO$_2$ scaffold acts as an electron shuttle between the silicon and the catalyst, while also stabilising the silicon from passivation and enabling a high loading of molecular catalysts (>30 nmol (geometrical cm)$^{-2}$). When a Ni bis(diphosphine)-based catalyst is anchored on the surface of the electrode, a high turnover number of ~1 x 10$^3$ was obtained from photoelectrolysis under UV-filtered simulated solar irradiation at 1 Sun after 24 h at pH 4.5. Notwithstanding its aptitude for molecular catalyst immobilisation, the p-Si|TiO$_2$ photoelectrode showed great versatility towards different catalysts and pH conditions, with photoelectrocatalytic H$_2$ generation also being achieved with platinum and a hydrogenase as catalyst, highlighting the flexible platform it represents for many potential reductive catalysis transformations.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO$_2$ into carbonaceous feedstock chemicals is a promising strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously store solar energy in chemical form. Photocatalysts for this transformation are typically based on precious metals and operate in nonaqueous solvents to suppress competing H$_2$ generation. In this work, we demonstrate selective visible-light-driven CO$_2$ reduction in water using a synthetic photocatalyst system that is entirely free of precious metals. We present a series of self-assembled nickel terpyridine complexes as electrocatalysts for the reduction of CO$_2$ to CO in organic media. Immobilization on CdS quantum dots allows these catalysts to be active in purely aqueous solution and photocatalytically reduce CO$_2$ with >90% selectivity under UV-filtered simulated solar light irradiation (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm$^{–2}$, λ > 400 nm, pH 6.7, 25 °C). Correlation between catalyst immobilization efficiency and product selectivity shows that anchoring the molecular catalyst on the semiconductor surface is key in controlling the selectivity for CO$_2$ reduction over H$_2$ evolution in aqueous solution.

Lignocellulose is Earth’s most abundant form of biomass and its valorization to H$_{2}$ is a key objective for the generation of renewable fuels. Solar-driven photocatalytic reforming of lignocellulose to H$_{2}$ at ambient temperature offers a sustainable route towards this goal, but this reaction is currently limited to noble-metal-containing systems that operate with low activity under ultraviolet light. Here, we report the light-driven photoreforming of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin to H$_{2}$ using semiconducting cadmium sulfide quantum dots in alkaline aqueous solution. We show that basic conditions cause these dots to become coated with oxide/hydroxide in situ, presenting a strategy to improve their photocatalytic performance. The system operates under visible light, is stable beyond six days and is even able to reform unprocessed lignocellulose, such as wood and paper, under solar irradiation at room temperature, presenting an inexpensive route to drive aqueous proton reduction to H$_{2}$ through waste biomass oxidation.

Light-driven enzymatic catalysis is enabled by the productive coupling of a protein to a photosensitizer. Photosensitizers used in such hybrid systems are typically costly, toxic, and/or fragile, with limited chemical versatility. Carbon dots (CDs) are low-cost, nanosized light-harvesters that are attractive photosensitizers for biological systems as they are water-soluble, photostable, nontoxic, and their surface chemistry can be easily modified. We demonstrate here that CDs act as excellent light-absorbers in two semibiological photosynthetic systems utilizing either a fumarate reductase (FccA) for the solar-driven hydrogenation of fumarate to succinate or a hydrogenase (H$_{2}$ase) for reduction of protons to H$_{2}$. The tunable surface chemistry of the CDs was exploited to synthesize positively charged ammonium-terminated CDs (CD-NHMe$_{2}$$^{+}$), which were capable of transferring photoexcited electrons directly to the negatively charged enzymes with high efficiency and stability. Enzyme-based turnover numbers of 6000 mol succinate (mol FccA)$^{-1}$ and 43,000 mol H$_{2}$ (mol H$_{2}$ase)$^{-1}$ were reached after 24 h. Negatively charged carboxylate-terminated CDs (CD-CO$_{2}$$^{-}$) displayed little or no activity, and the electrostatic interactions at the CD–enzyme interface were determined to be essential to the high photocatalytic activity observed with CD-NHMe$_{2}$$^{+}$. The modular surface chemistry of CDs together with their photostability and aqueous solubility make CDs versatile photosensitizers for redox enzymes with great scope for their utilization in photobiocatalysis.

A series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) dyes with a terminal phosphonic acid group for attachment to metal oxide surfaces were synthesised and the effect of side chain modification on their properties investigated. The organic photosensitisers feature strong visible light absorption ($\lambda$ = 400 to 575 nm) and electrochemical and fluorescence studies revealed that the excited state of all dyes provides sufficient driving force for electron injection into the TiO$_2$ conduction band. The performance of the DPP chromophores attached to TiO$_2$ nanoparticles for photocatalytic H$_2$ evolution with co-immobilised molecular Co and Ni catalysts was subsequently studied, resulting in solar fuel generation with a dye-sensitised semiconductor nanoparticle system suspended in water without precious metal components. The performance of the DPP dyes in photocatalysis did not only depend on electronic parameters, but also on properties of the side chain such as polarity, steric hinderance and hydrophobicity as well as the specific experimental conditions and the nature of the sacrificial electron donor. In an aqueous pH 4.5 ascorbic acid solution with a phosphonated DuBois-type Ni catalyst, a DPP-based turnover number (TON$_{DPP}$) of up to 205 was obtained during UV-free simulated solar light irradiation (100 mW cm$^{-2}$ , AM 1.5G, $\lambda$ > 420 nm) after 1 day. DPP-sensitised TiO$_2$ nanoparticles were also successfully used in combination with a hydrogenase or platinum instead of the synthetic H$_2$ evolution catalysts and the platinum-based system achieved a TON$_{DPP}$ of up to 2660, which significantly outperforms an analogous system using a phosphonated Ru tris(bipyridine) dye (TON$_{Ru}$ = 431). Finally, transient absorption spectroscopy was performed to study interfacial recombination and dye regeneration kinetics revealing that the different performances of the DPP dyes are most likely dictated by the different regeneration efficiencies of the oxidised chromophores.

Attaching the phosphonated molecular catalyst [Re$^{I}$Br(bpy)(CO)₃]⁰ to the wide-band gap semiconductor TiO₂ strongly enhances the rate of visible-light driven reduction of CO₂ to CO in dimethyl formamide (DMF) with triethanolamine (TEOA) as sacrificial electron donor. Herein, we show by transient mid-IR spectroscopy that the mechanism of catalyst photoreduction is initiated by ultrafast electron injection into TiO₂, followed by rapid (ps-ns) and sequential two-electron oxidation of TEOA that is coordinated to the Re center. The injected electrons can be stored in the conduction band (CB) of TiO₂ on a ms-s time scale, and we propose they lead to further reduction of the Re-catalyst and completion of the catalytic cycle. Thus, the excited Re catalyst gives away one electron and would eventually get three electrons back. The function of an electron reservoir would represent a role for TiO₂ in photo-catalytic CO₂ reduction that has previously not been considered. We propose that the increase in photocatalytic activity upon heterogenisation of the catalyst to TiO₂ is due to the slow charge recombination and the high oxidative power of the ReII species after electron injection, as compared to the excited MLCT state of the unbound Re catalyst or when immobilized on ZrO₂, which results in a more efficient reaction with TEOA.

Molecular catalysis of fuel-forming half reactions such as proton and CO$_2$ reduction is a key area of study for achieving electrical-to-chemical energy storage and solar fuel synthesis. Immobilization of these molecular catalysts on electrode surfaces often results in high turnover numbers and selectivities, even under the challenging conditions of an aqueous environment. This Perspective considers how the combination of electrochemistry and electronic spectroscopy can be used to characterize catalytic processes $\textit{in operando}$, explaining the observed performance and therefore guiding the design principles for the next generation of material/molecule hybrid electrodes and devices. Numerous immobilization strategies and electrode materials are already available, of which wide band gap metal oxides offer transparency to visible light and are therefore ideal for spectroelectrochemical characterization. Spectroscopic analysis of emerging catalytic metal−organic framework and polymer films is also discussed.

The transfer of photoenergized electrons from extracellular photosensitizers across a bacterial cell envelope to drive intracellular chemical transformations represents an attractive way to harness nature's catalytic machinery for solar-assisted chemical synthesis. In Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1), trans-outer-membrane electron transfer is performed by the extracellular cytochromes MtrC and OmcA acting together with the outer-membrane-spanning porin⋅cytochrome complex (MtrAB). Here we demonstrate photoreduction of solutions of MtrC, OmcA, and the MtrCAB complex by soluble photosensitizers: namely, eosin Y, fluorescein, proflavine, flavin, and adenine dinucleotide, as well as by riboflavin and flavin mononucleotide, two compounds secreted by MR-1. We show photoreduction of MtrC and OmcA adsorbed on Ru(II) -dye sensitized TiO2 nanoparticles and that these protein-coated particles perform photocatalytic reduction of solutions of MtrC, OmcA, and MtrCAB. These findings provide a framework for informed development of strategies for using the outer-membrane-associated cytochromes of MR-1 for solar-driven microbial synthesis in natural and engineered bacteria.

Scalable and robust electrocatalysts are required for the implementation of water splitting technologies as a globally applicable means of producing affordable renewable hydrogen. We demonstrate herein that iron-only electrode materials prove to be active for catalyzing both proton reduction and water oxidation in alkaline electrolyte solution with superior activity to that of previously established bi-functional catalysts containing less abundant elements. The reported bi-functionality of the iron electrodes is reversible upon switching of the applied bias through electrochemical interconversion of catalytic species at the electrode surface. Cycling of the applied bias results in in-situ electrochemical regeneration of the catalytic surfaces and thereby extends the catalyst stability and lifetime of the water electrolyzer. Full water splitting at a current density of I = 10 mA cm⁻² is achieved at a bias of approximately 2 V which is stable over at least 3 days (72 one hour switching cycles). Thus, potential-switching is established as a possible strategy of stabilizing electrode materials against degradation in symmetrical water splitting systems.
