Reduced supplementation frequency is a broadly applied management practice. Ruminants consuming low quality forages/pastures, supplemented less than once daily are able to maintain body weight gain (BWG), efficiency of use of dry matter, nitrogen and other nutrients, as compared with animals supplemented once daily. We evaluated the feeding behavior, dry matter intake (DMI), dry matter and organic matter digestibility (DMD and OMD), BWG, Longissimus muscle area and backfat depth of Nellore steers raised on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pastures during the dry season, with different supplementation patterns. Thirty six animals (338 ± 40.7 kg) were distributed over nine paddocks according to a completely randomized design. Treatments were based on supplementation frequency: once daily (OD), once daily except Saturdays and Sundays (SS), or on alternate days (AD), at 1.0 %, 1.4 % and 2.0 % BW, respectively. Average total DMI accounted for 1.6 % BW day–1, with no effect of supplementation frequency. Supplementation frequency had no effect on BWG or grazing time during the day. There was no difference in Longissimus muscle area animals supplemented daily, SS and AD. The backfat depth was thinner in animals supplemented AD, but even in this case, it was within the standards considered satisfactory for a finishing steer. Reducing supplementation frequency seems a good option to lower labor costs without affecting feed efficiency or carcass quality in beef cattle grazing tropical pastures.

Objetivou-se avaliar o padrão fermentativo, estabilidade aeróbia e valor alimentício de silagens de milho inoculadas com Lactobacillus buchneri associado ou não ao L. plantarum. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: silagem de milho sem inoculação (controle); silagem de milho inoculada com L. buchneri NCIMB 40788 (1x10(5) UFC/g forragem); silagem de milho inoculada com L. buchneri NCIMB 40788 e L. plantarum MA18/5U (1x10(5) UFC/g forragem). A inoculação com L. buchneri promoveu alterações no padrão fermentativo e composição química das silagens, notando-se maior perda de matéria seca (MS) e estabilidade aeróbia nestas silagens. Contudo, as mudanças químicas ocorridas durante a fermentação não foram suficientes para alterar o consumo de MS e de nutrientes por novilhas mestiças, embora tenha se observado maiores digestibilidade da MS e matéria orgânica devido à ação das bactérias ácidoláticas, o que refletiu na maior produção de ácidos graxos de cadeia curta e menores valores de pH. Os resultados deste trabalho permitem concluir que a estabilidade aeróbia das silagens de milho aumenta devido à aplicação de L. buchneri de forma isolada. Contudo, a aplicação isolada ou associada ao L. plantarum não altera o consumo de matéria seca e de nutrientes, mas resulta no aumento da digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca e matéria orgânica. The aim of this research was to evaluate the fermentation, aerobic stability and nutritional value of corn silages inoculated with Lactobacillus buchneri combined or not with Lactobacillus plantarum. The treatments evaluated were: corn silage untreated (control); corn silage inoculated with Lactobacillus buchneri strain NCIMB 40788 (1x10(5) cfu/g forage); corn silage inoculated with Lactobacillus buchneri strain NCIMB 40788 (1x10(5) cfu/g forage) and Lactobacillus plantarum strain MA18/5U (1x10(5) cfu/g forage). The inoculation with Lactobacillus buchneri promoted changes in fermentation and chemical composition of silages and, there was higher dry matter (DM) loss and aerobic stability in these silages. However, the changes occurred during the fermentation were not enough to change the DM and nutrient intake of the heifers, although there was higher DM and organic matter digestibility due to action of the lactic acid bacteria. These facts resulted in an increase of short-chain fatty acids production and a decrease in the pH values. The results of this study showed that the aerobic stability of corn silages is improved after inoculation with Lactobacillus buchneri. However, the alone or combined application with Lactobacillus plantarum do not change the dry matter and nutrient intake, but dry matter and organic matter apparent digestibility is enhanced.

Avaliou-se a degradação da matéria seca (MS), da proteína bruta (PB), da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), da fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) e da hemicelulose das silagens de milho, de sorgo e de Brachiaria brizantha. Foram utilizados três novilhos Nelore, machos, fistulados no rúmen, com média de peso de 200kg. Em cada animal foram incubadas amostras das três silagens nos tempos de 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 e 96 horas. Para as degradabilidades potencial e efetiva da MS (taxa de passagem no rúmen de 5%/h), a silagem de milho foi a que apresentou valores mais altos, 80,1 e 56,7%, respectivamente, seguida da silagem de sorgo, 73,0 e 45,3%, e da silagem de Brachiaria, 60,8 e 33,7%. Para a PB, o maior valor de degradabilidade foi verificado para a silagem de milho, 87,0%, seguida das silagens de sorgo, 81,8%, e de Brachiaria, 75,2%. A degradabilidade da FDN foi maior para as silagens de milho e sorgo. Para FDA, a silagem de sorgo apresentou perfil de degradação menor que a silagem de milho. Os resultados sugerem melhor qualidade da silagem de milho, seguida pela do sorgo e pela de Brachiaria. The experiment evaluated the degradation of the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and hemicellulose of silages of corn, sorghum and Brachiaria brizantha. Three steers averaging 200kg bw were rumen fistulated. In each animal, the three silages were incubated for 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 hours. For the potential degradability and the effective degradability (passage rate 5%/h) the corn silage presented the highest values, 80.1 and 56.7%, respectively, followed by the sorghum silage (73.0 and 45.3%), and the Brachiaria silage (60.8 and 33.7%). For CP, the highest degradability value was also verified for the corn silage (87.0%), followed by the sorghum silage (81.8%), and Brachiaria silage (75.2%). For NDF, the highest degradability values were also verified for the corn and sorghum silages. However, for ADF, the sorghum silage presented degradation profile lower than the corn silage. The results suggest a better quality of the corn silage, followed by sorghum and Brachiaria silages.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da queima e do tratamento com aditivos químicos (uréia, benzoato de sódio e hidróxido de sódio) e inoculantes microbiológicos (Propionibacterium acidipro-pionici + Lactobacillus plantarum e Lactobacillus buchneri) na ensilagem da cana-de-açúcar, utilizando o esquema fatorial 2 (cana-de-açúcar crua e queimada) x 6 (cinco aditivos uréia, benzoato de sódio, hidróxido de sódio, Propionibacterium acidipropionici + Lactobacillus plantarum e Lactobacillus buchneri mais o grupo controle). Avaliou-se a composição química da forragem antes de ensilar e após a abertura dos silos. Observou-se concentração dos teores de FDN em todas as silagens, de 51,3% (antes da ensilagem) para 67,8% após a abertura dos silos. Maiores recuperações da matéria seca digestível verdadeira, 83,6 e 79,8% foram observadas nas silagens de cana-de-açúcar queimada e tratadas com NaOH ou com L. buchneri, respectivamente. Observou-se elevação da recuperação da matéria seca digestível de 45% nas silagens de cana crua controle para 74,3% nas silagens tratadas com L. buchneri. Nas silagens de cana queimada as melhores recuperações dessa fração foram observadas nas silagens tratadas com NaOH (83,6%) e nas com L. buchneri (79,8%). Os aditivos NaOH e L. buchneri foram os mais eficientes em controlar as perdas qualitativas durante o processo fermentativo da ensilagem da cana-de-açúcar crua ou queimada. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effect of the chemical (urea, sodium benzoate, and sodium hydroxide) and microbiological (Propionibacterium acidipropionici + Lactoba-cillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus buchneri) additives on the sugarcane nutritive value, ensiled crude or after burned, using a factorial scheme 2 (burned or crude sugar cane) x 6 (five additives urea, sodium benzoate, sodium hydroxide, Propionibacterium acidipropionici + Lactobaci-llus plantarum, and Lactobacillus buchneri plus control). It was evaluated the sugar cane chemical composition, before and after ensilage. The sugar cane NDF contents increased (51.3%, before ensilage) to 67.8% after fermentation period. The highest true digestible dry matter recovery values, 83.6 and 79.8% were observed on the burned sugar cane silage treated with NaOH or L. buchneri, respectively. The NaOH, and L. buchneri showed more efficiency in reducing nutritive looses during the fermentation phase of the crude or burned sugar cane silage.
