This article reports a discourse analysis of journals from adult learners during a 1-week residency in Cape Town, South Africa. The theoretical posture is a critical dialogic perspective, making use of a postcolonial understanding of intercultural interactions. The purpose of the study was exploratory. The analysis suggests that demographic variables (e.g., race), prior international travel, and experiences during the residency influence the amount and pace of cognitive change. Results include both questions for future research and suggestions for educators.

Shows that relationship duration (in a vignette describing a manager and an employee) significantly affected whether respondents thought the employee should telecommute; and that managerial reaction to criticism and managerial loyalty significantly affected forecasts of the worker's and manager's working together successfully. Suggests that relationship predictability may constrain, and communication behaviors may facilitate, an individual's decision whether to telecommute. (SR)

Finds that telecommuters, in interviews, consistently reported that telecommuting had been a success with few disadvantages, whereas questionnaire results suggest that the relationship between the telecommuter and his or her manager may deteriorate after an initial "honeymoon" phase has passed. Reports primarily face-to-face oral events requiring the respondent to function as an advocate or to manage conflict. Notes that both gender and first language correlated with responses. Argues that further improvement will require that scholars identify central issues, use a variety of research methods, address normative issues, make full use of relevant literatures, and support colleagues who choose business communication ethics as a major research focus.
