This paper presents a mean-field numerical analysis, using the full three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), of an experiment carried out by Orzel et al. [Science 291, 2386 (2001)] intended to show number squeezing in a gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. The motivation for the present work is to elucidate the role of mean-field effects in understanding the experimental results of this work and those of related experiments. We show that the non-adiabatic loading of atoms into optical lattices reproduces many of the main results of the Orzel et al. experiment, including both loss of interference patterns as laser intensity is increased and their regeneration when intensities are lowered. The non-adiabaticity found in the GPE simulations manifests itself primarily in a coupling between the transverse and longitudinal dynamics, indicating that one-dimensional approximations are inadequate to model the experiment., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures; v2 includes new references and corrections to references

Multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock theory is presented and implemented in an investigation of the fragmentation of a Bose-Einstein condensate made of identical bosonic atoms in a double well potential at zero temperature. The approach builds in the effects of the condensate mean field and of atomic correlations by describing generalized many-body states that are composed of multiple configurations which incorporate atomic interactions. Nonlinear and linear optimization is utilized in conjunction with the variational and Hylleraas-Undheim theorems to find the optimal ground and excited states of the interacting system. The resulting energy spectrum and associated eigenstates are presented as a function of double well barrier height. Delocalized and localized single configurational states are found in the extreme limits of the simple and fragmented condensate ground states, while multiconfigurational states and macroscopic quantum superposition states are revealed throughout the full extent of barrier heights. Comparison is made to existing theories that either neglect mean field or correlation effects and it is found that contributions from both interactions are essential in order to obtain a robust microscopic understanding of the condensate's atomic structure throughout the fragmentation process., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

We propose a model for the creation of entangled number states (Schr\"odinger cat states) of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well through simple phase engineering. We show that a $\pi$-phase imprinted condensate in a double-well evolves, with a simultaneous change of barrier height, to number states with well defined and controlled entanglement. The cat state generation is understood in terms of the underlying classical phase space dynamics of a $\pi$-phase displaced coherent state put at the hyperbolic fixed point of the separatrix of a physical pendulum. The extremity and sharpness of the final cat state is determined by the initial barrier height and the rate at which it is ramped during the evolution., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to J. We present a representative set of analytic stationary state solutions of the Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for a symmetric double square well potential for both attractive and repulsive nonlinearity. In addition to the usual symmetry preserving even and odd states, nonlinearity introduces quite exotic symmetry breaking solutions - among them are trains of solitons with different number and sizes of density lumps in the two wells. The fundamental question of how Bose-Einstein condensates tunnel into a barrier is addressed. The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a finite square well potential, which models a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-one-dimensional trap of finite depth, is solved for the complete set of localized and partially localized stationary states, which the former evolve into when the nonlinearity is increased. An immediate application of these different solution types is tunable tunneling. Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances can change the scattering length of certain Bose-condensed atoms, such as $^{85}$Rb, by several orders of magnitude, including the sign, and thereby also change the mean field nonlinearity term of the equation and the tunneling of the wavefunction. We find both linear-type localized solutions and uniquely nonlinear partially localized solutions where the tails of the wavefunction become nonzero at infinity when the nonlinearity increases. The tunneling of the wavefunction into the non-classical regime and thus its localization therefore becomes an external experimentally controllable parameter., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study the dynamics of a tracer particle subject to a constant driving force $E$ in a one-dimensional lattice gas of hard-core particles whose transition rates are symmetric. We show that the mean displacement of the driven tracer grows in time, $t$, as $ \sqrt{\alpha t}$, rather than the linear time dependence found for driven diffusion in the bath of non-interacting (ghost) particles. The prefactor $\alpha$ is determined implicitly, as the solution of a transcendental equation, for an arbitrary magnitude of the driving force and an arbitrary concentration of the lattice gas particles. In limiting cases the prefactor is obtained explicitly. We present a simple mechanical model for dynamic wetting phenomena. Metallic balls spread along a periodically corrugated surface simulating molecules of liquid advancing along a solid substrate. A vertical stack of balls mimics a liquid droplet. Stochastic motion of the balls, driven by mechanical vibration of the corrugated surface, induces diffusional motion. Simple theoretical estimates are introduced and agree with the results of the analog experiments, with numerical simulation, and with experimental data for microscopic spreading dynamics., Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 9 Postscript figures, to be published in Phy.
